If I Can Dream: Chapter 1
A/N: Man, I've been so back and forth on whether to publish this one or just keep it to myself forever. This series is very near and dear to my heart, so I'd love to hear your thoughts if you enjoy it.
An extra special thank you to my besties @ccab and @atleastpleasetelephone for all their encouragement. Thanks for putting up with me! I love you both! 🩷🩷🩷
Summary: It's 1975 and Jo Bellamy has been in love with Elvis for 20 years. She doesn't even care that they haven't met yet. All she needs is a chance and she's determined to get one.
But Elvis doesn't feel much like Elvis anymore. What happened to the man he used to be? He's pretty sure he's long gone.
Can a chance encounter with Jo change the ill-fated trajectory of his life?
Warnings: this will eventually have smut, but is pretty fluffy/angsty for now. Elvis is sad and dealing with self esteem issues. There's also a small mention of drug use. Jo smokes cigarettes.

Elvis looks at himself in the mirror again and tries not to cringe. At least he was able to zip the jumpsuit and get the belt on. The silver phoenix spreads across his torso, distracting from the rest of him. But he's not used to seeing this old man looking back at him. He touches his face gently, his rings glittering in the light, and sighs deeply. It wasn't so long ago that he was a sleek, handsome sex machine and now he's this. Old and tired and fat. Washed up. That's what the magazines say: washed up.
“EP, it's time!” Jerry hollers from the hallway. Elvis takes another deep breath and groans when the belt cuts into his stomach.
It's December of 1975 and Elvis is back in Vegas to finish the engagement he started in August that landed him in the hospital yet again for exhaustion. He's not sure he'll make it through this one either, but he's determined to try. If he doesn't have anything left to offer on stage, what the hell is the point?
He closes his eyes and turns from the mirror, walking to the door. Before he opens it, he rearranges his face into a smile. Nobody needs to know how he feels.
******
Jo looks in the mirror and moves a few pieces of her hair around on her forehead. When she came home with her pixie cut a few weeks ago, her best friend almost lost it. Evelyn couldn't believe Jo'd cut off all of her beautiful hair right before she was supposed to be in her wedding. But Jo was tired of messing with it. This was much easier and she liked the way it made her look young and fun. At 36, she was eager for anything that made her look younger.
She touches her cheek and looks at her eye makeup in the mirror. She has on the kind of thick black liner and mascara that makes her eyes look wide and doll-like and was popular when she was younger. Makeup is a little less dramatic now, but she likes this look better than the current style.
Her lavender shirt is almost see-through and her navy pants hug her ass just right. She's got a nice body, for her age, having been blessed with a fast metabolism and well-proportioned curves.
“Jo Bellamy, you're a catch.” She says it out loud to the mirror and nods affirmatively. Evelyn laughs from the bathroom and hollers amidst her giggles.
“Yeah, too bad you're too busy runnin’ to let a man catch you!” Jo looks at her friend and crinkles her nose.
“I'd stop for the right man.” Evelyn snorts.
“He'd have to be a hell of a man to stop you.”
“Yes, he would. I won't settle for anything less than the deepest love.” Jo smiles dreamily as her friend walks back into their hotel room. They've come to Vegas to celebrate Evelyn's last weekend as a single woman.
“Is that why you insisted on seeing Elvis? You think he's the right man?” Evelyn pokes Jo in the side and they both giggle.
“Ah yes, Elvis Presley. The man that no one else can live up to. He's the reason I've been single all these years, you know.”
“Oh, I'm aware. And it's ridiculous. We've seen him how many times, now?”
“Six. But I've never been on the front row. This is a big deal.” Evelyn looks at Jo nervously.
“You're gonna do something crazy, aren't you?” Jo pretends to be offended.
“Moi?! Noooooo, never.” But her reassurance is not received. Evelyn has known Jo since second grade. The only thing you could count on with her was that she'd do something crazy.
“Just don't get us kicked out again.” Jo laughs, thinking of how she'd been carried out of a venue in ‘72 for trying to get to his car after a concert.
“Hey, the show was over!” Evelyn rolls her eyes. She's been there for Jo's whole Elvis-obsessed life, from seeing him in 1955 on the back of a truck in a parking lot in Memphis, to being at the train station when he left for the army, to seeing every single movie, to flying to Vegas when he opened there in 1969. She used to be just as big of a fan, but that faded when she met Phil five years ago. Now, she just thinks it's time for Jo to grow up and move on like she did. Jo winks. “But I make no promises. I'm getting desperate.”
She has no intention of moving on. Elvis is the only man who has ever been consistent in her life, even if he doesn't know who she is. And now he's not married anymore, so she feels better about trying to catch him. Tonight might be her only chance to be this close to him. She's not going to waste it.
******
Elvis moves around the stage, doing his normal show routine. He's absolutely exhausted and the crowd's energy feels off. Honestly, he's not far from just walking off and calling it a night. He doesn't even kiss anyone during Love Me Tender, just tosses a couple of scarves into the audience.
“Something's wrong.” Jo mutters to Evelyn.
“What do you mean?”
“With him. Something's wrong.” Evelyn studies her friend. Jo is watching him like a hawk, her eyebrows pulled together.
“You know, I read a thing about him being on drugs-” Jo whips her head around.
“No. This is different. He's sad. He's not high.” Evelyn wonders how she can tell the difference, but doesn't push her on it.
By the end of the show, though, Jo is trying desperately not to cry. Her heart is broken for him and she can't even really say why. When he starts the last song, she stands up.
“Jo! Josephine! Sit down!” Evelyn pulls on her hand. Her heart is in her throat, but she can't let him leave the stage like this.
Elvis notices a girl in the front row standing as he starts his last song. He can't believe he made it to the end of the show and he's ready to leave this stage and never come back. But he can't take his eyes off the girl that's standing. He thinks about going to the edge of the stage to give her a scarf and a kiss, but before he can do that, she acts.
Jo pushes her chair to the edge of the stage, stands on it, and drags herself up onto the platform. Evelyn is yelling at her, but she blocks her out. Her heart is pounding and she knows she has about three seconds before Charlie grabs her, so she goes straight to Elvis.
Elvis is in shock as the girl runs to him and launches herself into his arms, wrapping herself around his neck. It's certainly not the first time a fan has come up on stage, but it's been a little while. He relaxes a bit when she kisses his cheek and whispers.
“It's okay. Whatever it is, it's okay. We still love you. I still love you.” He smiles a bit and whispers back.
“Thank you, dear.”
And then Charlie is there with his arms around her waist and she lets go of Elvis and allows herself to be carried away. He almost grabs her hand, but he stops himself. She's got to be crazy, coming up on the stage like that. But she didn't feel crazy; she felt desperate, and he understands that feeling. Even beyond that, her words were kinder than anything he's experienced in a while. There's a kind of ache to hear more of what she has to say.
The show ends and he calls Joe over to him.
“Find her.”
“Which one?”
“The one who came up on the stage, dumbass.” Elvis knows they're wasting precious time and she might be leaving.
“Oh. I'm sorry boss-”
“What did you do?”
“It wasn't me! They escorted her out of the venue.” Elvis feels rage bubble up inside him.
“THEY KICKED HER OUT?!” He bellows and kicks over a chair backstage.
“Security did! They figured you would want her gone!” Joe is obviously starting to panic. Elvis rounds on him and his eyes burn with anger.
“You find her. Go now. Find her.”
“But boss you could have-”
“I WANT HER.” Joe knows when it's time to stop arguing and get to work, so he nods quickly and takes off. “I want her…”
He whispers it quietly to himself, a little surprised that he said it. There hasn't been anyone he's wanted in a while. But something about her was different. He tells himself he's just curious to figure it out. That has to be it.
******
Jo grunts in frustration again and lights her cigarette while they wait for a cab to take them back to their hotel.
“Well, what did you think was gonna happen?!” Evelyn is less than amused by Jo's decision to run up on the stage and get them both kicked out.
“I dunno. This, I guess. But I still wanted to see the end of the show. Also it felt like he wanted to talk to me more.” Evelyn rolls her eyes so hard Jo is afraid it might be painful.
“You just want that to be true.”
“No! You weren't up there with him.”
“Jo, this is ridiculous. He's a celebrity. You don't know him.”
“I don't have to know someone to know when they're in need.” She stamps on her cigarette as a cab pulls over to them and they climb inside. Evelyn tells the cabbie where to take them and they ride in silence the rest of the way.
Joe gets to the sidewalk just as their cab pulls away. He doesn't know it was her in the car, though, so he runs around frantically looking. After almost an hour, he goes back to Elvis, ready to have his tail kicked for failing.
“You didn't find her?” Joe shakes his head sullenly and looks at the floor. Elvis has his jumpsuit off and his pajamas and robe on. He'd lost hope after about twenty minutes of Joe being gone. “Oh well.”
Joe leaves and Elvis turns all the lights off and closes the curtains, leaving the room almost pitch black until he turns the televisions on. He swallows a handful of pills and settles on the couch.
They'll head back to Memphis in a few days and he'll have some peace. Still, some part of him wishes she wasn't out of his life forever. Just another woman to add to his list of regrets. Too bad he doesn't even know this one’s name.
******
Evelyn and Jo leave Vegas the next day and go back home to their normal lives. Evelyn is preparing for the wedding and Jo is watching the papers for news that Elvis is back in Memphis. Despite all the urging from Evelyn to give up, she's not quite ready to quit. Not when it seems like he might need her. Evelyn just rolls her eyes and tells her she better not miss the wedding because she's chasing an impossible dream.
When she sees that Elvis gets home a few days later, Jo leaves work in the middle of the day to go to the Graceland gates. He's already inside when she gets there and joins the throng of women outside waiting for him. She's instantly annoyed by their presence and knows he must be too, so she turns and walks back to her car.
Elvis is in his bedroom with the lights off. He peeks out the window briefly and sees the crowd at the gates. It should encourage him, but it doesn't. He's convinced they're all just dreaming of a man that doesn't exist anymore. He closes the heavy drapes and crawls into bed, even though it's the middle of the day. Even reading sounds too daunting right now, so he just closes his eyes. He knows he won't sleep, but he can at least pretend to try. Maybe it'll help this feeling go away.
Jo comes back to Graceland at about 1:30 in the morning and is excited to see that all the other fans have gone home. She stands at the gates for a bit, but it's so cold that she starts to lose feeling in her fingers and toes. The house is mostly dark, but she knows he's in there and he's probably awake. With his performance schedule in Vegas, there's no way he's not a night owl. She walks back to her car to warm up and look around for some way she can try to get his attention. Then she sees it in her backseat: a ream of copy paper. There's a black marker in her purse that she keeps there just in case, so she digs it out. She writes on the paper in big letters:
I’M THE GIRL THAT HUGGED YOU ON STAGE ON SATURDAY.
She'll have to assume she's the only one that did that. She writes it on a few more papers and then scribbles her name and phone number on all of them.
“This is crazy.” Jo mutters to herself as she stands at the gates, bouncing from one foot to the other with an armload of paper airplanes. It takes her a few tries and she has to walk to a place where the wall is a little lower, but eventually she's able to sail all of them over to his side. She imagines that the guards are probably getting a good kick out of what she's doing, but she doesn't care. This is too important. But she's done all she can do tonight. The ball is now literally in his court. Hopefully, he'll see the notes and call her. Or he won't and she can finally put to rest this idea that she has stuck in her brain and go on that date with Alan from work. He's been after her for months now and she's running out of excuses to say no. Jo gets back in her car, rubbing her hands together for warmth, and says a silent prayer that Elvis will call.
******
Until Chapter 2!

She's never been one to worry about the future, but the thought of losing him makes her stomach turn over. Still, right now he has his arms around her and she's perfectly content to stay there forever, looking out over the untouched snow with the moonlight sparkling like diamonds.
******
Elvis wakes up unusually early on Christmas morning and kisses Jo awake. She groans and tries to roll away from him to get more sleep– they were up until after 2am getting things ready for Lisa Marie and it's only 9 now.
“Tink… wake up honey… it's Christmas…”
“Mmm babe it'll still be Christmas in an hour…” She grumbles.
“Yeah, but I wanna give you this before Lisa comes.” She rolls over and he's sitting there with a little box wrapped in red paper with a gold bow. Her heart stops and panic sets in when she realizes she doesn't have a gift for him.
“Oh, Elvis, I didn't know we were doing gifts… I haven't… I didn't…”
“Hush. Just open this.” He sets the small box on her stomach, so she sits up, yawning. She undoes the bow and starts to unwrap it.
“You already gave me a necklace. I don't know what else–” she holds them up. “A set of keys?”
“Yes!” He's about to burst with excitement and she suppresses a giggle at how childlike he is when he's overcome with joy.
“Keys to what?”
“Well, this one–” He takes the key ring and pulls out one. “This one's for Graceland. Your own key, since this is your home now too. And this one… well, c’mere.”
He gets out of the bed and walks to the window and she begrudgingly follows him, shivering. She's always freezing, so he wraps his arms around her from behind as she looks out the window. There, in the driveway, is a shiny new Mercedes-Benz in candy apple red.
“I just took a guess on the color. If you don't like it, we can trade it for something–” She turns and kisses him with her arms tight around his neck.
“It's perfect. Why did you pick red?” He shrugs.
“You wear a lot of red and your toenails are red. It just made me think of you. But seriously, if you don't like it, we can get something else.”
“Red is my favorite color.” She raises an eyebrow quizzically. “You noticed my toenails?”
“Yes. Don't make it weird.” She giggles and kisses him softly again, mumbling against his lips.
“It really is perfect.” She starts to walk him backwards towards the bed until he sits on the edge and she crawls into his lap, straddling him. His hands roam over her sides and back and then up the front of her pajama shirt to cup her breasts.
“Honey, we only have–” He whispers between kisses– “about an hour before Lisa Marie gets here.”
“You're the one with your hands all over me.” She whimpers as he leans forward and presses his lips to her neck. Then he murmurs against her skin.
“Can't help it. You crawled in my lap.”
“Then I guess we better hurry.” She squeals as he picks her up and flips her over so that she's laying on the bed and he's standing next to it.
“Guess so.” But he's not quite hard yet, so he drops to his knees and pulls her pajama bottoms and panties off.
“Elvis, what are you–? Oh… oh!” She moans. He's got her legs open and his tongue pretty far in her pussy when there's a knock on the door. Neither of them notices.
“Rise and shine, lovebirds!” Jerry starts to open the door. “It's time for– oh God.”
“Ahhh!” Jo screams a little and Elvis looks up confused. He quickly stands up and throws the blanket over her whole body, face and all.
“Jerry. You knock, wait for a response, and then open the door. How old are you?” Jerry is still just standing there with his mouth open in shock. It's been a while since he's walked in on Elvis with a girl. His eyes drift down a bit to little Elvis standing at full attention and he looks away quickly, clearing his throat. Elvis realizes what happened and turns away. “Goddamnit. Now you're hard?!”
Jo is in a fit of laughter where she's laying underneath the blanket.
“Cool it, Giggles.” Elvis hollers at her playfully.
“I'll just… go…” Jerry turns and walks out, shutting the door behind himself. Elvis uncovers Jo and she cackles out loud.
“Oh my God!” She can barely breathe, she's laughing so hard. Elvis just stands there with his hands on his hips for a second before he gets tickled too and his laugh fills the room. She finally slows down enough to talk. “Think we scarred him for life?”
“Nah, Jerry's seen way worse. At least this time it wasn't my naked ass.” That sets Jo off again and she sits up with tears sliding down her cheeks as she giggles. Elvis sits down next to her on the bed and throws his arm around her, kissing her forehead. “Guess that kinda ruined the mood a little, huh?”
She tries to even her breathing and slips her hand between his legs where his cock is now soft.
“Yeah, I guess it did. I could try to get him back?”
“Nah, honey, we gotta get ready anyway. We will finish this tonight when it's just us again.”
“You promise?” He holds his hand up and nods.
“On my honor as a gentleman. I will make you cum tonight. Probably twice.” She laughs and pushes his shoulder.
“You're no gentleman, Mr. Presley.”
“And you're no lady. Now let's get that sweet little ass of yours in the shower before anything else happens.” She giggles and kisses the end of his nose.
“I love you, Elvis.”
“Nah, Tink. I love you more.” She pushes his hair back off of his forehead and there's a brief moment where they look into each other’s eyes and wonder how they got so lucky. Then, they peel themselves off the bed and get into the shower together.
Somehow, they manage to get ready with about three minutes to spare, so they're headed downstairs when the doorbell rings. At the bottom of the staircase, Jo sighs nervously. Elvis turns and takes her face in his hands.
“It'll be fine, Tink. She's gonna love you.”
“I hope you're right.” He kisses both of her cheeks and whispers.
“I'm Elvis Presley. I'm always right.” He winks and then turns to open the door. Jo smiles. It's nice to see his natural confidence back.
As soon as the door is open, Lisa Marie bounds in the room and launches herself into her daddy’s arms. He catches her easily and the two of them share a moment that is totally and completely theirs. Priscilla notices Jo standing there awkwardly and reaches her hand out.
“I'm Priscilla.” Jo nods and tries to smile affably.
“I'm Jo. Jo Bellamy. It's nice to meet you.”
“Mhmm. How long have you all been… whatever you are…?” Jo blinks, not sure how to answer. Priscilla's tone is friendly, but the question feels loaded.
“Long enough, Cil.” Elvis cuts in and saves Jo from having to explain that they've only been together a week. They exchange the rest of the necessary pleasantries without Priscilla asking anymore questions. Eventually, she leaves and it's just Elvis, Jo, and Lisa Marie, who turns to Jo and gives her a skeptical look. She doesn't trust any woman who takes her daddy’s attention. Elvis notices the interaction and interjects.
“Yisa, this is Jo. She's daddy’s new… friend.”
“She's your girlfriend, daddy, you can just say it.” Lisa is sassy for a 7-year-old, but Jo is not thrown off. She fakes a gasp.
“Am I your girlfriend?! No one told me!” She turns to Lisa. “He's a mess.”
Elvis watches the interaction anxiously. Most of his girlfriends haven't really interacted too much with Lisa, especially not at first. To his surprise, Lisa giggles.
“He is a mess. But he's your mess now!” Jo laughs and looks over at him.
“I'll accept that challenge.” Elvis smiles softly at Jo. Lisa Marie looks back and forth between them and grins. She hasn't seen her daddy happy in a long time and if this woman makes him this happy, she's ready to play nice.
“I'm hungry. What's for breakfast?” Lisa asks loudly. Elvis bites his lip. He was in such a good mood yesterday, he gave the staff the day off– with rather large bonus checks– but he's not sure how they'll eat.
“W-well, baby– I-I-I–” He stutters, trying to come up with something.
“I'll cook. Let's go see what we have to work with.” Jo holds her hand out to Lisa Marie, who takes it easily, and they head into the kitchen. Elvis follows them, intrigued. He remembers that while they were making candy, Jo told him about how she had spent weekends with her aunt when she was a kid. Her aunt had learned to cook from her mother, Jo's grandmother, before she passed away, and she didn't have any kids of her own, so she taught Jo everything she knew. He hopes this includes breakfast.
In the kitchen, Jo moves around looking for what she needs. She manages to find eggs, bacon, and stuff to make biscuits and she puts Lisa Marie to work helping her. Lisa makes a huge mess with the flour, but Elvis is impressed with how little it bothers Jo to clean up as she's cooking.
“I like my eggs fried hard, honey.” He hollers at Jo as she cracks eggs over a pan.
“Hard? Why?!” He laughs.
“That's just how I like ‘em.”
“Alright, you're allowed to be wrong about that. I still love you.” Lisa giggles as Jo makes a disgusted face.
“Tell me you don't eat runny eggs, Tink.”
“I definitely eat runny eggs, Elvis.” He groans in disgust and pretends to fall off his chair. Lisa is beside herself laughing at the two of them. She decides at that moment that Jo can stick around. “Lisa Marie, how do you want your eggs?”
“Hard like daddy’s.” She gets a bashful look on her face. “But can I try yours?”
“Oh no! No ma'am. I'm not letting Tink corrupt you.” Elvis grabs her and puts her on his lap. Lisa laughs and puts her little hands on his cheeks.
“Oh, silly daddy. Why do you call her Tink if her name is Jo?”
“Doesn't she look like Tinkerbell?” Lisa turns to look at Jo, who is taking the biscuits out of the oven. She nods and then looks back at Elvis.
“Does that make you Peter Pan?”
“I guess it does, Yisa.”
“Good. It means you'll never grow up.” He smiles and kisses her forehead. Jo walks over with their breakfast plates and they settle in the dining room to eat.
After breakfast, they make their way to the living room for Lisa to open the mountain of presents surrounding the tree. Elvis fetches a camera and Jo snaps a couple of photos as they sit in the living room like a family. Once all the presents are open, Lisa sits on the couch between them with a doll on her lap. She turns and looks at Jo.
“How old are you? You look old enough to be my mom. Most of daddy’s girlfriends don't.”
“Oh, Yisa–” But Jo interrupts him.
“I'm 36. I am definitely old enough to be your mom.” Lisa sits up and looks at her, shocked.
“You're older than my mom!” Jo nods.
“I am. Is that okay?” Lisa settles back between them.
“It's fine with me.” Elvis chuckles.
“Good, I'm glad we have your approval, babygirl.” They sit there for a little while longer. Eventually Lisa sighs.
“Now what are we gonna do?” Jo clicks her tongue.
“Snowball fight?” Lisa scoffs.
“Daddy won't–” He jumps off the couch.
“Let's go. Me against you two girls. Unless you're scared?” Lisa’s face breaks out in the widest smile and she hops off the couch too. The three of them get bundled for the snow and head outside. The rest of the afternoon is spent in the yard. The girls win the snowball fight when they tackle Elvis and bury him in snow. Eventually, the sun starts to set and they go back inside to warm up with cocoa that Jo makes on the stove with milk. They're sitting in the TV room watching A Charlie Brown Christmas when the doorbell rings and Lisa Marie groans.
“Your mom’s here, babygirl.”
“Can't I stay with you guys?” Jo can see the pain on Elvis's face as he shakes his head and starts up the stairs with Lisa and Jo not far behind. In the foyer, Priscilla gathers Lisa Marie and the presents she can carry. Lisa grabs Jo and hugs her tight.
“Bye Jo.” Priscilla purses her lips.
“I'll send the rest of it soon.” Elvis says sadly. Just before she leaves, Lisa Marie gestures for him to come close to her. He squats down and she wraps him in a hug.
“Don't lose this one, daddy. She's special.” She says it in his ear, but both Priscilla and Jo can hear her. He pulls back a little and kisses her cheek and then looks her in the eye.
“I won't, babygirl.”
“She’s your Tinkerbell. She's magic.” Elvis stands up and puts his arm around Jo.
“She is magic. Don't worry, Yisa. She's not going anywhere.” Priscilla watches the scene with her mouth open a little.
“Come on, Lisa. Let's go home.” She tries to hustle her out the door, but they hear her little voice just as the door closes.
“I am home.”
Elvis breaks down as soon as the latch clicks and Jo grabs him and holds him on her shoulder as he sobs.
“I miss her so much when she's gone. And her mother…” He chokes a little. “I need her with me all the time.”
“I know, babe. I know.” They stand there for a while, with Elvis crying on her shoulder. Finally, he stands up and wipes his face.
“I'm sorry; I just–”
“Elvis, you don't have to apologize. I understand.” He smiles weakly and holds her chin between his thumb and forefinger.
“I love you, Jo Bellamy.”
“I love you too, Elvis Presley.” He kisses her softly and notices she's shivering again, his eyebrows knitted together in concern.
“Are you cold, honey?”
“I'm freezing.” His weak smile turns to a grin.
“I know what we need.” He leads her through the house out to the carport.
“Elvis, where are we going?!”
“Just trust me.” She follows him across the yard to the brand new racquetball building.
“I'm not playing racquetball–” He turns and gives her a look.
“Will ya just hush and follow me?” She nods and follows him inside and up the stairs. He uncovers the surprise and exclaims. “Ta-da!”
“Woah…” Jo is almost speechless. He has a whirlpool spa full of already-hot water.
“Let's warm up. What do ya say, Tink?”
“Fuck yes.” He frowns.
“Language, honey, or I'll put something in that dirty mouth.”
“Oh, I'm counting on it.” She laughs. “I don't have a bathing suit, though.”
“Do you need one?” He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively.
“Sure don't.” She smiles and starts to undress. Elvis turns to go back down the stairs. “Wait, where are you going?”
“Figured you might like a drink. There's a bar downstairs. Wine?” She nods and then stops him.
“I thought you didn't drink? I don't really want to drink alone.” He clicks his tongue and strokes her cheek.
“It's Christmas, honey. I'll have a drink or two with you.”
Elvis fetches the drinks while Jo strips down and settles into the hot tub naked. When he returns, he hands her the glass of red wine and then starts to take his clothes off too.
“Mmm, honey you look so good like this. Almost hate to ruin the picture by getting in there with you.” She stands up out of the water and moves over to him, grabbing his face.
“Stop it. You do this all the time. I love the way you look.”
“I just don't feel good about it. And it hurts. I'd like to be healthy for you. I want to stick around.”
“Okay, well that's different. That we can work on. But no more of this talking bad about yourself nonsense. I love you just the way you are. You hear me?” He nods and she kisses his forehead.
“Yes ma'am. You'll help me get healthy again?”
“Of course I will.” He looks down sheepishly.
“Already cut down on my pills a lot. Been only takin’ what's necessary.” She smiles.
“I noticed. I'm proud of you, babe. Whatever you wanna do, I'm here. Look at me.” He moves his eyes back up to meet hers. “I'm in this with you for the long haul, no matter what that means, okay?”
“Okay.” He finishes undressing and slides into the water with her. She sips her wine as he lights a cigar and takes a sip of whiskey. They sit in silence for a bit, just enjoying the warm water and each other's company.
“I'm sorry I didn't get you a gift.” She whispers. He sets down his drink and the cigar and lifts her into his lap facing him.
“Tink, honey, you are a gift. You've given me my life back. That's enough.” He leans forward and presses his lips to her neck. “Besides, I can think of something else I want from you that doesn't require you to buy anything at all.”
She moans softly as he kisses down to her collarbone.
“Yeah, what is that?” His fingers find their way between her legs under the water and start to make circles on her sensitive bud. She leans her head back and moans.
“This little pussy. Little Elvis has been missing her all day.” He kisses up to her ear and nibbles on the lobe.
“Oh is that right?” She whimpers as he works her clit with his fingertips. He uses his other hand to grab hers and put it on his erection. “Mmm, I guess so.”
He groans, slipping two fingers inside her to pump them in and out with his thumb on her clit as she begins to stroke him. Something about being in the hot water makes the whole scene even more erotic.
“Love how you touch me, honey.” His breath starts to come a little faster as she moves her hand on him. He grits his teeth and leans his head back, his hands drifting to her hips. “Fuck.”
“You wanna feel this little pussy, babe?” All he can do is nod.
“Mmhmm…” She moves over him to tease her clit with the tip of his cock and then starts to sink down onto him. His mouth falls open in pleasure. “Fuck yes, honey…”
She braces herself with her hands on his shoulders and starts to bounce on him. He looks up at her with her lower lip pulled between her teeth. She's so beautiful like this, lost in the ecstasy of loving him. His heart swells and he reaches up to pull her forehead down against his. She moans as he guides her movements with one hand on her hip and the other on her neck.
“God, I love you Tink. I love you so goddamn much.” She smiles and feels the lump form in her throat as she rubs her forehead on his.
“This is everything I've ever wanted. You are everything I've ever wanted. I love you too, Elvis.” His hands move to her back and he lifts his hips a little to thrust into her from underneath. The subtle shift in angle makes the tip of his dick rub against the sensitive spot inside her and she moans loudly. He pulls one of her nipples into his mouth and runs his tongue around it as he slides in and out of her, the water rushing against her clit with his movements. “Oh, God, Elvis. It feels so… fuck.”
“Come on, Tink. Cum for me, honey.” The sweat drips down his forehead as he works to push her over the edge, his own release gathering in his balls. The water splashes over the edge of the tub as they fuck, but neither of them cares. They’re too caught up in the pleasure of being together. He moves his thumb back to her clit as he slams into her as fast as the water will allow. Finally, her orgasm snaps wide open inside her and she moans, her body shuddering around him as she cums hard on his dick.
“Yes, honey, that's it. Yes, Tink, fuck!” He gets louder with each word and holds her still as he empties himself deep inside her, his cock twitching with the release. After a few seconds, they both relax against each other, sweating and panting.
But Elvis isn't finished. He kisses her shoulder and neck and lifts her off of him, turning and setting her on the corner of the spa.
“Elvis, what're you doing?” Jo asks, exhausted. He looks up at her and smiles, pushing her thighs apart.
“I promised you two.”
“Oh!” She moans and damn-near falls off the side of the tub when he dives into her pussy tongue-first. “Oh. My. God.”
Her clit is so sensitive, the rest of her so puffy with use, that his mouth is making her wild. She tries to stay still as he licks her, but she writhes and grinds against his face. He holds her ass cheeks with both hands in an attempt to keep her from moving, but he kind of loves that she's so turned on she has to move. Her hands are in his hair, pulling as she pushes against his mouth and he grunts. If he was twenty years younger, he'd be hard again already. It's so hot to listen to the little sounds that drip from her mouth as she loses control. He feels her tighten around his tongue and knows she must be getting close, so he slips two fingers up inside her to pump in and out while he licks her clit.
“Elvis! Oh, oh, oh!!” She exclaims as she cums again, her release splashing out of her onto his hand as he fingerfucks and licks her through her orgasm. Her whole body trembles as the wave of ecstasy rushes over her, knocking out the hearing in her left ear. When she relaxes, he pulls away and she slides back into the hot tub. He catches her and turns with her sitting sideways in his lap, resting her head against his chest.
“You okay, honey?” She sits up and shakes her head.
“No. No I’m not.” His eyes fill with concern and he holds her face in his hands as a single tear slides down her cheek.
“What is it?” He moves her hair off her forehead and strokes the side of her face. “Honey…?”
“I lied to you.” He blinks, a gnawing fear setting in. She tries to breathe and continues. “I said I didn't care how long we were together. I said all I wanted was right now and that would be enough, but it isn't. I don't want to live without you, Elvis. Not ever. And I'm terrified that you're going to go on tour or back to Vegas and that'll be it and I can't… I can't…”
She's overcome with emotion, sobbing into his chest. He relaxes significantly and smiles, kissing the top of her head.
“Honey, listen.” He rearranges to hold her face in his hands again, wiping the tears away with his thumbs and looking her in the eye seriously. “I meant it when I told Lisa Marie I wasn't going to let you get away. When I go to Vegas or on tour, you'll come with me. It's as simple as that. You think I'd forget my magic girl? My Tink? I'm not living this adventure without you. You got it?”
She sniffles and nods and he leans in and kisses her softly.
“I know this has been your dream for 20 years, but it's not just yours anymore. It's ours. And I'll be damned if I let it end any time soon.”
“Our dream?”
“Ours, honey. You and me. Forever.”
“Forever…”

New Year's Eve 1975 - Pontiac, Michigan
Elvis is on stage, doing his normal routine with as much enthusiasm as he's ever done it before. He moves around, jokes with the audience, and kisses fans– with his mouth closed– as much as he ever has. People in the crowd will talk about this show as a comeback of sorts. A reporter will write “1970 Elvis has returned.” He looks better, he feels better, he is better. Just before he sings Can't Help Falling In Love and ends the concert, he stops the music and starts talking.
“I wanna introduce y’all to someone. Tink, honey, stand up.” The spotlight falls on her and she stands up, blushing and giggling. “Isn't she beautiful, folks? This is my fiancee, Jo Bellamy.”
Jo’s mouth pops open and she stands there in shock. Elvis continues.
“She looks like that because I haven't asked her yet. You wanna marry me, honey?” The crowd goes wild as Charlie hands him a ring box that he opens and holds out to her. She laughs and nods, waiting for them to settle before hollering up at him.
“Of course I do!” There’s more raucous applause from the audience, but Jo and Elvis might as well be in a room alone. Eventually, the cheers subside.
“See folks? Fiancee. C’mere, honey.” Jo is beside herself with joy as she makes her way to the stage. He bends down and slips the giant diamond on her finger before kissing her. He holds the mic to the side and whispers. “I love you, Tink.”
“I love you more, babe.” He winks and then stands up. Jo makes her way back to her seat and sits down. She's already pregnant with their boys, Elvis Jr. and Jessie Garon, but neither of them know it. The music starts up and Elvis says one last thing before he breaks into song.
“To live would be an awfully big adventure, right honey? That's exactly what we plan to do. Come on guys, let's sing the song…”
And they lived happily ever after.

But he misses her in his arms, the big bed feeling cold and empty.
******
Jo drags herself through work on Thursday, coming home to immediately get in the bath with a bottle of wine. She puts on an Elvis record, the B side to Promised Land, and sobs to the sound of his voice. She knows it's silly to be sad over something that never really happened, but she'll never stop loving him. The record stops and she gets out of the tub, wrapping herself in a fluffy robe and resetting the needle. It’s Midnight plays again and she lays on the bed crying with the album cover in her arms. She's in this position when Evelyn calls.
“Oh, Jo-Jo, surely you knew it wasn't going to go anywhere. The man dates beauty queens and Playboy bunnies.” Jo takes a big gulp of wine.
“Yeah, but you weren't there when we woke up on the couch together. We talked for hours.” Evelyn sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose.
“Okay, you're right. But will you give it up now? You met him. You went to his house. And now it's done. So please, ask Alan to the wedding. I don't want you to be the only one without a date.”
“Yeah.” Jo takes a deep breath and sighs. “Yeah, I'll ask Alan tomorrow.”
******
Elvis spends the whole of Thursday in bed. The aching loneliness is back and he just can't seem to find a reason to do much else. At around 1am, there's a soft knock on his door.
“Who is it?” Jerry pokes his head in the door.
“It's just me, boss.”
“Hey, Jer.”
“You alright?” Jerry enters the room and sits on the end of the bed.
“Yeah, I'm fine.” Elvis doesn't move from his position in the bed on his side. Jerry looks at him silently for a while. He's not sure what to do to help, but he knows he needs to try something. An idea comes to him; it's risky, but he has to try.
“What happened to that girl?” Elvis tries to keep his breathing even.
“What girl?” Jerry rolls his eyes. He knows Elvis knows who he's talking about.
“Jo? Wasn't that her name?”
“She's gone.” Elvis closes his eyes and tries not to picture her, think about her laugh, or the scent of her hair.
“I thought she lived in Memphis.” Jerry knows he's pushing his luck here, but he's not going to give up.
“She does! Leave me the fuck alone, Jerry!” Elvis sits up and yells, cringing with the stiffness of having been in bed all day. Jerry purses his lips.
“All I'm sayin’ is you were happier in those 24 hours with her than you have been in years. Maybe it's worth givin’ her a call.” He stands and walks from the room, slamming the door behind himself.
Elvis lays back down and tries to think of anything but Jo, but it doesn't work. Eventually, he sits up and stares at the phone. He picks up the receiver no less than four times before he gets up the courage to dial her number.
Jo’s phone rings and rattles her from her deep slumber. Her head already hurts a little from the wine, but when she realizes what's happening, she takes a deep breath and grabs the phone.
“Elvis…”
“Hi honey.” She looks up at the ceiling and tries to keep her tears in her eyes. “Were you, um, were ya sleepin’?”
“Yeah, I was. It's almost 3am. Again.”
“Oh…” Elvis starts to lose his nerve, thinking this was a terrible decision. “I'm sorry; I-I'll leave ya alone.”
“No! It's okay. I'm… glad you called…”
“Are ya?” She laughs softly.
“Yeah, of course I am.” He smiles and relaxes into the conversation. His first instinct is to ask her to come over, but he stops himself before he does. He's afraid that might send the wrong message.
“You workin’ tomorrow?” She sighs.
“Yeah, unfortunately.” He nods, forgetting that she can't see him. And then it just slips out before he can stop it.
“You should come over when you're done.” He cringes a little, knowing that this whole thing is probably a mistake.
“Elvis, I'd love to, I really would, but I promised my niece I would take her to see Christmas lights.” Jo curses under her breath, hating the idea of turning down a chance to see him again. “Why don't you come with us?”
“Oh, honey, I-I-I-” He stumbles over his words trying to come up with an excuse.
“I've just decided. You're coming with us. I think you need to get out of that house.”
“Jo, honey, I don't-I can't-”
“What? Ride in a car? Yes you can. I'll pick you up around 5:30.” Something about the way she says it makes him feel like he couldn't say no even if he wanted to.
******
At about 5:45pm, Jo pulls up to the Graceland gates with her niece Amy in the backseat of her old pea-green car and asks to be let in. Jerry is so happy to see her back that he's practically bouncing when he opens the front door.
“Hey, Jo! He'll be down in a second.” She nods and they wait in the foyer. Eventually Elvis comes down in a two-tone blue suit. He had originally had on one of his tracksuits but decided to change at the last second, and he's glad he did. Jo is so cute in her little cowl-neck sweater dress and boots that he almost hopes photographers will find them. She lights up when she sees him and he can't help but smile too.
“Hi! This is my niece-” The little girl sticks out her hand.
“Amy Louise Jenkins.” Elvis smiles down at her and takes her hand, shaking it gently.
“Elvis Aaron Presley. It's a pleasure to meet you.” Jo has to physically stop herself from melting on the spot. “How old are ya? You seem about the same age as my Lisa Marie.”
“I'm seven, but I'll be eight in May.” He nods.
“I was right. Lisa will be eight in February.” She smiles and turns to Jo, taking her hand in one and Elvis's in the other.
“Let's go see some lights!” Elvis looks at Jo over Amy's head and shrugs. Jo suppresses a grin and they make their way out to her old, beat-up car. Elvis looks at it and turns to her with his eyebrows raised.
“Not all people drive Cadillacs.” Jo whispers.
“No, honey, I know that. It's fine.”
The rest of the evening passes with all three of them belting out Christmas carols as they drive around the wealthier neighborhoods in Memphis looking for lights. In the beginning, Elvis wouldn't sing, but with some gentle cajoling from Jo and Amy, he finally breaks down. When Blue Christmas comes on, he sheds any last hints of nervousness and puts on a full show. The girls both applaud wildly and he has to grab the wheel when Jo almost crashes into a parked car in her enthusiasm. When he does, he unintentionally puts his arm behind her on the seat and she leans her head on his shoulder.
“You want me to drive, honey?” He speaks softly, enjoying the feel of her so close to him.
“Yeah, do you mind?”
“Not at all.” She parks the car and he replaces her in the driver's seat. He's surprised but pleased when she settles onto his shoulder again.
By 8 o’clock, Amy is snoozing soundly in the backseat and Elvis follows Jo's directions to her stepsister’s house. When they get there, Jo looks into the backseat and sighs.
“I'm not sure how I'll get her to the door without waking her up.”
“I got ‘er.” Elvis is not sure where his confidence comes from, but she's no bigger than Lisa Marie and he carries her all the time. They get out of the car and he scoops Amy into his arms, walking up to the front door. For a second, he forgets who he is until Jo's brother-in-law answers the door and his jaw drops. Jo realizes what's happening and interjects.
“Hey, Rob, this is Elvis.” Her brother-in-law scoffs.
“Yeah. I know.” Elvis tries to smile genially.
“She fell asleep in the car. Hope this is okay.” Rob nods, still a little starstruck and takes Amy from him.
“Thanks…”
“Goodnight, Rob.” Jo takes Elvis's arm and turns him around to head back to the car. She can only keep her giggles under control for a few feet before she lets them out. He looks at her, amused.
“What's got you tickled?”
“His face! I forgot who you were for a second.” He chuckles.
“Honestly, so did I.” They get back in the car and she leans on his shoulder again for the drive back to Graceland.
When they get back to the house, Elvis parks Jo's car in the driveway and his stomach sinks at the thought that she'll go home soon. Again, he wants her to stay, but he's nervous about her expectations in the bedroom.
“Can I come in?” He raises his eyebrows, surprised at her boldness.
“Umm…”
“I'm just not ready to go home yet. And I feel like every time I leave, the likelihood of seeing you again decreases.” He swallows, knowing that she's right. The more he allows himself to think about it, the more he worries whether this should continue. But when she's here right in front of him, it's hard to turn her down. He feels himself nod.
“Yeah. I dunno what we'll do-”
“We'll find something. Let's go.” He has to admit, her happy-go-lucky attitude is infectious.
They get into the foyer and she looks around the house while he stands there awkwardly.
“Umm…”
“You don't have a Christmas tree.” He hadn't even realized. Usually he's instructed someone to set it up by now, but this year he forgot.
“No, I guess I don't. I'll have someone set it up before Lisa Marie comes.”
“We’ll do that!” He looks at her confused.
“Tell someone to set up the tree?” She purses her lips.
“No, ya brat, we’ll do it ourselves and decorate it.” He scowls.
“I ain't a brat.”
“I know. So quit actin' like one. Let's get the tree. Where is it?”
“I think it's in storage somewhere. Mary probably knows.”
“Well, okay then. Let's go.” She walks towards the kitchen and he follows her. He's quickly learning that when she puts her mind to something, she's going to make it happen regardless of the obstacles. In general, he's not used to this level of agency or determination in a woman, but at his age it's kind of nice to not be in charge for once.
With Jerry and Mary's help, they manage to locate the tree and boxes of decorations. It takes them a while, but after lots of direction from Jo and laughter from both of them, they manage to get it done.
“Okay, plug it in!”
“Yes ma'am, miss bossy.” He gives her a little salute and she giggles. The sound of her laugh warms him from the inside out and he thinks to himself that taking her instruction is worth it for this feeling. The thought gets even stronger when he plugs in the tree and she squeals with delight.
“Oh, it's so pretty! Elvis come look!” He stands and walks up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist instinctively. Maybe he could just let this happen.
“It is pretty.” He murmurs in her ear.
“You know the best way to look at a Christmas tree, right?”
“This seems like a pretty good way.”
“C’mere.” She moves away from him and he decides he needs to get her back in his arms as quickly as possible. He watches as she lays down on the floor with her head up under the tree. “Ahhh, get down here. It's gorgeous.”
Shaking his head, he lowers himself to the ground and grunts as he arranges to be under the tree. He's not sure how he'll get up again, but when he sees her with the colored lights shining on her face, he decides he doesn't care.
“Isn't it pretty?” She looks over at him and he brings his hand up to her cheek, running his thumb across it gently.
“Beautiful.” He can no longer stop himself as he leans over and presses his lips to hers.
The kiss is soft and sweet, but when he pulls back to look at her, his heart skips. He hasn't felt like this about a woman in a long time and it scares him. She leans in to kiss him again and he backs away.
“You wanna tour?” He smiles awkwardly and she blinks a few times.
“Oh, yeah, I guess.” She's completely confused by his quick shift, wondering if she's done something wrong, but she follows his lead as he moves from under the tree. It takes them both several tries and quite a bit of grunting, but eventually they both make it back to standing. He holds both of her hands in his and looks down at her. Almost against his will, he leans in and kisses her softly. There it is again, the heart skip that makes him so nervous. He pulls back from the kiss and just looks at her. She's completely perplexed by his kisses and subsequent hesitation, but before she can say anything, he wraps an arm around her waist and starts to lead her through the house.
The last place he shows her is the pool. He realizes it hasn't been drained and curses Jerry. It's freezing outside, so he holds her again from behind with her head against his chest.
“We should jump in.” She says quietly. He laughs and presses his lips to her temple. Why can't he keep himself from kissing her? He’s torn from that thought when she speaks again. “I'm serious! I've heard it's good for you. Let's do it.”
“Honey, you're crazy.”
“Am I? I'm doing it.” She pulls away from him and walks to the edge of the pool.
“Jo, no. It might be dangerous.” Putting her hands on her hips, she turns to face him.
“Nah. And anyway I thought you were a daredevil? What happened to the guy who had firework fights?”
“He had to grow up.” There's a hint of bitterness in his voice. She shakes her head, walking towards him and resting her hand on the side of his face.
“No. Time passed. Growing up is optional.” He leans down and kisses her again. It's like he can't get enough. She mumbles against his lips. “I refuse.”
Then, she turns and takes off running, jumping into the pool fully-clothed. The cold water overwhelms her body with sensation, shocking her system.
“Jo!” When she surfaces she lets out a little scream and shivers.
“Come on! Don't make me do this by myself!”
“You're fucking crazy, honey.”
“Yeah! And you're a pussy.” He scowls again, his masculinity offended.
“No, I ain't.” Her teeth chatter, but she refuses to back down.
“Prove it.” He puts his hands on his hips and shakes his head.
“Damn it, honey.” She giggles as he walks to the edge of the pool. He looks up at the sky when she gestures for him to join her. The stars twinkle down on him and he wonders: what if he does take this plunge with her? Would it kill him? Unlikely. And if he doesn't do it, what is he choosing instead? Suddenly, he's not just thinking about the pool. He looks back down at her, shining with life and sparkling like the stars. “Alright, fuck it.”
And then he jumps. His whole body screams when the icy water crashes into his skin. But he survives and feels more alive than he has in years. He surfaces and pulls her to him, kissing her deeply. This time when his heart skips, he leans into it, slipping his tongue into her mouth and pushing his body against hers. Every part of him buzzes with life and need and something he can't quite put his finger on. She shivers in his arms, not sure if it's the cold from the water or the heat from the kiss that's running through her. He pulls back and runs his fingertips down the side of her face.
“Honey, you're shakin’. Let's go inside.” She nods and kisses him deeply again.
They manage to get out of the pool and run through the house to the upstairs bathroom, giggling like teenagers and dripping all over the carpet. He starts a hot shower and they both start stripping off wet clothes. When they're down to their underwear, he grabs her and pulls her to him, crashing his lips into hers in a full open-mouthed kiss. They tumble into the shower together and moan as the hot water touches their skin. He doesn't stop her when her hand drifts below his waist, dipping into his underwear. To his own surprise, he's hard as a rock and he groans as she strokes him gently. His hands move over her whole body, unclasping her bra and pushing her panties down frantically.
“Bed?” She mumbles as she removes his underwear, leaving them both naked. He's so relieved she suggested it, he nods vehemently without moving his mouth from hers. A decade ago, he would've just bent her over in the shower, but now he needs something a little more stable. What he doesn't know is she does too. She might be 4 years younger, but she's no twenty-something and the thought of getting on her knees in the shower is not appealing. They quickly dry off, still pressed together, and he walks her backwards into the bedroom, where she lays on the bed and he crawls on top of her, dropping hot kisses on her skin wherever he can reach. She spreads her legs and he goes to push into her, but the move from the bathroom was a little too much for him.
“God fucking damnit!” He curses loudly and she grabs his face.
“It's okay.” When he tries to protest, she shakes her head and pushes him onto his back. “Do you think this is the first time this has happened to me? It's okay, Elvis.”
He closes his eyes and leans his head back, but he whips them open again when he feels her mouth around his soft cock.
“Honey, I don't know if-”
“Shh. Let me work. You just think about what it would feel like to fuck me. Focus on the sensations of it. Tell me how my pussy feels, babe.” She goes back to moving her mouth on him.
“Jo…”
“Tell me.” He sighs and closes his eyes again. What she's doing does feel really good and imagining having sex with her is easier than jumping in the pool was, so he tries to think about it.
“It's tight… wet…”
“What else, babe?”
“It's… squeezing my cock just right…” He starts to get into it, losing himself in his fantasy and the way her mouth and hand feels on him. “I can feel you cum; you're so sexy when you cum for me.”
He moans softly and she tries not to smile as he begins to harden in her mouth. She swirls her tongue around his sensitive head and takes his balls in her hand to massage them as she works.
“Fuck, yeah baby. God that's good.” In another few seconds, he's as hard as he was in the shower and she sits up, stroking him with her hand.
“You wanna actually feel me now? See if your imagination was right?” She hovers over him, dragging the tip of his dick against her entrance to cover it in her arousal.
“More than anything.” He grabs her hips and she whimpers as she starts to sink onto him, moving slowly to give herself the chance to adjust.
“Oh god… fuck.” She groans as he fills her fully, his cock so deep inside her as she grinds against his hips. She starts to pick up a steady rhythm of sliding him in and out, bouncing and rolling and moaning.
“Better… it's better…” He groans, running his hands up to cup her breasts. She arches her back as she pushes him even deeper, his cock hitting her g-spot with every movement.
“Fuck, Elvis…”
“You've got a dirty mouth, honey.” She laughs.
“You didn't seem to mind when it was wrapped around your cock.” He blushes a little, still unaccustomed to women who own their sexuality. His hands move down to grip her hips as he helps her move on him.
“Careful. Keep this up and I'll fill that pretty little mouth again.” He grabs her chin and runs his thumb along her bottom lip. She pulls his thumb into her mouth and swirls her tongue on it.
“You promise?” She smiles mischievously and he grabs her, pulling her down onto his chest.
“Gonna fill this pretty little pussy with cum first, honey.” He whispers in her ear as he starts to thrust up into her from underneath. She whimpers, the change in position pushing her to the edge of an orgasm.
“Yes! Oh god… I'm so close…” He feels her walls flutter around him and grunts.
“Come on, honey. Cum on my dick. Let me feel it.” That's all it takes for her to tumble over the edge into oblivion, her pussy pulsing around him as the pleasure runs through her body like lightning. The feeling of her throbbing around him is enough to throw him over the edge too and he holds her tight to his chest as his orgasm rips through him, his cock emptying deep inside her.
They lay there for a bit trying to catch their breath, both of them trembling. Eventually he loosens his grip on her and they relax. She lets him slip out of her and then rearranges to lay next to him in the crook of his arm. Her fingers run through his chest hair and he kisses her forehead.
“Hey, honey?” He turns a little to look down at her.
“Yeah?”
“What is this?” She lifts her arm when she feels his fingers on the skin of her ribcage. He lifts his head a little to try to see what he noticed when she was on top of him.
“It's a tattoo.”
“I didn't know women got tattoos.” She rolls her eyes a little.
“Janis Joplin has one.”
“What's it say?” He tries to read it, but he's at the wrong angle.
“‘To live would be an awfully big adventure.’ It's from-”
“Peter Pan.” She looks at him in awe.
“Yes, how did you-?”
“I read a lot, honey.” He runs his fingertips over the words softly. “You know, you've always reminded me of someone. Now I know who it is.”
“Who?”
“Tinkerbell.” She laughs and kisses his nose. He looks into her eyes and she stops laughing. The reality of the situation hits her like a ton of bricks and all of a sudden her eyes fill with tears. She squeezes them shut to try to keep the tears from falling and buries her face in his chest. “Hey, hey. What's wrong?”
He finds her chin and makes her look up at him, the tears sliding down her cheeks. She desperately searches for a way to express what she's feeling, but the words aren't there. Finally, she's able to choke out something.
“Nothing’s wrong. It's good. Isn't it? It can't be this good.” He softens and kisses her forehead, pulling her in close.
“Oh, Tink. It is good.” He looks down into her face, holding her cheek in his big hand. “It is good.”
Too good, he thinks as she nods and settles against him. Too good to last.

If I Can Dream: Chapter 2
A/N: I am so flattered by all the comments on Chapter 1! Seriously, y'all made my life with your kindness! I'm so glad there are other people who love Jo and 1975 Elvis as much as I do. I hope this one continues to live up to expectations! Keep the comments coming!
Need to catch up? Masterlist here.
Warnings: This will have smut, so minors stay away, but this chapter is all fluff/minor angst. Elvis gets mad and Jo is a bit triggered by it. Oh and Elvis takes pills again.
Word count: ~2.4k

Jo gets back in her car, rubbing her hands together for warmth, and says a silent prayer that Elvis will call.
******
Elvis wanders around the house aimlessly, trying not to wake anyone else up. He decides to take a peek at the cameras down at the gate to make sure everything is quiet. When he looks, though, he sees a girl standing there with her hand on the gate. She seems vaguely familiar, but he can't really see her face and she's bundled in a hat, coat, and scarf. He watches as she stands there for a bit and then walks away. Sighing deeply, he watches for a couple more minutes and then decides she must be gone. But just as he goes to turn away, she's back with something in her arms.
“What the hell?” He whispers as she starts trying to throw them over the gate. A chuckle escapes him as she misses a few times and has to walk further down the wall. Then, it dawns on him what she's throwing: paper airplanes. He watches as she throws the last one, rubbing her hands together and walking away. Then, his curiosity gets the best of him and he goes to Jerry's door, knocking. “Jer! Hey Jer, you up?”
Jerry takes a while to come to the door and Elvis knocks impatiently. Finally, he opens the door, his hair a mess and his eyes bleary with sleep.
“What is it, boss?”
“I need you to do somethin' for me.”
“Right now?” Jerry looks around for a clock to tell him what time it is.
“Yes, now. Get dressed.” Elvis turns and walks away and Jerry grabs some pants and shoes and follows him.
At the front door, Elvis explains what he wants Jerry to do.
“Just go out and get the airplanes?” Jerry raises his eyebrows. This seems like a simple task.
“Yes. And bring them to me.”
“You couldn't do this yourself?” Elvis smiles slyly.
“It's cold out there.” Jerry rolls his eyes and walks out the front door down to the wall. He picks up all of the notes and heads back up the driveway. When he gets back to Elvis inside, he's shivering.
“You want me to read ‘em to you too?”
“No, that's all. Thanks Jerry. Goodnight.” He takes the airplanes from Jerry and walks back up the stairs, leaving the younger man shaking his head and trying to warm his hands up.
Back in his bedroom, Elvis plops onto the giant bed and opens one of the airplanes. His heart stops when he reads it. He quickly opens all the others to find the same thing written on them. Without a thought, he grabs one and walks to the phone on his nightstand, sitting on the bed next to it with the receiver pressed to his ear. He dials the number quickly and waits as it rings.
Jo is in bed, wide awake, when the phone rings. She looks at the clock on the wall and picks it up tentatively.
“Hello?”
“Hi…” Elvis looks at the name on the note. “Jo? It's-”
“Elvis?!” She has to work hard to keep from screaming it into the phone.
“Yeah, honey. I got your airplanes.”
“Oh my god. You did?”
“Well, Jerry got them for me, but yes. How are ya?” Elvis is strangely nervous. His stomach flip-flops waiting for her response.
“I'm… I'm great, I guess. You know it's almost 3am?” She cringes a bit, knowing she shouldn't question this amazing situation, but she wouldn't be her if she wasn't a little sassy.
“Were ya sleepin’?”
“Um, no.”
“Didn’t think so. You live in Memphis or are you visiting?” The conversation continues as they move through the pleasantries into deeper topics. He can't believe how easy she is to talk to, how cute her little laugh is, how much he wishes she was actually there with him. It's been a long time since he's actually genuinely enjoyed a woman's company like this.
Jo is in heaven. This is everything she's ever dreamed of. The only thing that would make it better is being next to him. Still, she'll take what she can get. She's giggling at some story he's telling when she realizes the sun has started to come up.
“Elvis…”
“Yeah, honey?” She tries not to melt when he calls her honey.
“The sun is coming up.” He looks at the window and chuckles, sunlight creeping in under the blackout curtains
“Well, I'll be damned.”
“I have to be at work soon.” Jo twirls the phone cord in her finger, wondering if she'll ever hear from him again if she hangs up.
Elvis doesn't want to stop talking to her, afraid this spell will be broken if he ends the call.
“Why don'tcha play hooky today and come to my house?” Jo’s heart skips and Elvis can't believe what he's said. Why on earth would he invite her over to his house?! He's been up all night and needs to sleep. For a half second, the thought that he'd like to sleep next to her enters his head, but he gets rid of it as quick as it came. As young and pretty as she is, she'd expect more than just sleeping and he's not sure he'd be capable of that today.
“Oh, umm, I'd love to, but I really need to go to work. If I miss again they'll fire me.” He breathes a sigh of relief that she's not coming over immediately, but he still wants to see her.
“How about after? What time are you done?”
“I work until 4. You really want me to come over?” He thinks for a second and then the answer just comes tumbling out.
“Yeah, I really do.”
******
Jo is filled with a kind of nervous excitement all day long that keeps her awake. She's running on pure adrenaline and caffeine, so when the clock strikes 4:00, she's out the door in a heartbeat. She slaps her cheeks as she drives to Graceland trying to stay awake and before she knows it, she's knocking on the front door. Jerry answers and leads her into the foyer.
“Come on in. He's, um, in with the Colonel, but he told us you were coming.” He gestures for her to sit on the couch in the living room. She perches on the edge, careful not to get too comfortable for fear of falling asleep.
Just as she starts to doze, she hears a door slam upstairs and the Colonel comes down the stairs and walks straight out through the front. She hears another crash and it sounds like Elvis has broken something. She stands up instinctively and sees Jerry in the dining room, motioning for her to stay where she is. Elvis stomps down into the foyer and starts yelling to Jerry about whatever he's angry about. Jo isn't sure what to do, so she looks at the door and starts to walk towards it slowly. Maybe she should just get out of here…
“No! Jo, don't leave.” She turns and Elvis is close to her, still breathing heavily from his fight with the Colonel. His hair is fluffy like he's run his hands through it a hundred times.
“I just… I'm exhausted Elvis and you're obviously upset-”
“I'm fine!” He yells at her and she flinches. When she opens her eyes there's a fire in them that makes Elvis step back a little.
“Do not yell at me. I have not done anything to you. I grew up with a man yelling at me for things that weren't my fault and I'm not going to let you do it. I don't care if you are Elvis fucking Presley.” Jerry's eyebrows practically hit his hairline and he crosses his arms, waiting to see how Elvis will respond. Elvis is absolutely floored. No woman has ever talked to him that way. His mouth hangs open as he tries to figure out what he should say. She turns away from him back to the door and he finally speaks.
“Wait, please. Please stay.” He's careful to keep his voice even and quiet, so she doesn't think he's yelling again. Stopping, she lowers her head and breathes deeply. “I just have one more phone call with the recording studio and then I'm all yours. Please.”
Jo turns slowly and sees the pleading desperation in his eyes. She couldn't leave now even if she wanted to.
“Okay. I'll stay.” Elvis smiles, obviously relieved.
“Come on, you can wait down here.” He holds her elbow and leads her down the stairs to the TV room. Jo takes one look at the plush couch and smiles nervously. “I'll be back in just a minute. It'll be quick; I promise.”
She tries to perch on the edge again, but it's so soft and inviting that not long after he leaves, she's asleep. When he comes back down about fifteen minutes later, he finds her with her shoes off, snuggled on the couch sleeping soundly. He chuckles when he remembers that she stayed up all night and then went to work while he slept. She really is something else.
There's just enough room between her head and the corner of the couch for him to sit, so he positions himself there, careful not to touch or disturb her in any way. He clicks the TVs on and turns the volume down, looking down at her while she sleeps. With her haircut and big eyes, she's like a little fairy. He runs his fingertip down the side of her cheek gently and is overwhelmed with the desire to lean over and kiss her, but he doesn't.
Despite sleeping all morning, he's tired too, and before too long he's passed out as well. Without thinking, he snuggles into the corner and puts his legs up on the couch next to her, not even conscious of how close this makes them. She stirs a little when he does and groggily lifts her head, moving her body up to be in the crook of his arm. Neither of them is really aware of what's happening, but they cuddle there on the couch sleeping for the better part of three hours. At one point Jerry comes downstairs and smiles at the scene. It's been awhile since he's seen his boss this comfortable with someone new.
Jo’s stomach is the one that wakes her up. She worked through lunch, so she's starving. It rumbles and she opens her eyes sleepily. For a second, she has no idea where she is or who this man is that she's laying with. She sits up so quickly that it wakes Elvis up too.
“You're awake.” He stretches and pulls her back down against his chest.
“You're Elvis Presley.” His chest rumbles with a chuckle and she smiles.
“That I am, honey.”
“I'm sorry; I didn't mean to fall asleep.” This position is so habitual that he presses his lips to her forehead without thinking and mumbles.
“It's okay. I know you were up all night talkin’ with some old fool.” His hand runs up and down her arm as they talk.
“Yeah, my favorite old fool on the planet. And besides, you're not that much older than me.” He scoffs.
“Honey, do you know how old I am?”
“I've been a fan of yours since 1955. I know how old you are. I'm 36.” His hand freezes and he looks down at her. He would've sworn she was in her mid 20s.
“Are ya really, honey?” She nods against him.
“You wanna see an ID?”
“Nah, I trust ya, I'm just surprised. You look a lot younger.” For the first time since he called, Jo starts to doubt herself.
“Is it a problem?” She sits up and looks down at him where he shakes his head nervously.
“No! No. Women don't have expiration dates.” They look at each other for a minute, both of them wondering what it would feel like to press their lips against the other’s. Jo’s stomach growls again and breaks them out of their trance. “We need dinner. Come on.”
They peel themselves off the couch and go upstairs. Elvis arranges dinner for them and they eat together in the dining room, laughing and talking through the whole thing. At the end of the night, Elvis is dying to ask her to stay, but he's still afraid of what her expectations might be. She's a grown woman, not a girl, and he doesn't want to disappoint her. Instead, he takes her hand and kisses the back of it gently.
“Goodnight, Jo.”
“Goodnight, Elvis.” She smiles up at him softly, wishing he would kiss her. “Will I, um, will I see you again?”
Her heart flutters and she's afraid to even ask, but she has to know. This might've been a beautiful dream and nothing more.
Elvis hesitates for a second. He's reluctant to make any real promises, but he does want to see her again.
“Oh, well, Jo, um…” She shakes her head.
“It's okay. I shouldn't have asked. I'm just thankful for the 24 hours I got with you. G’night.” Before he can say anything else, she practically runs out the front door and down to her car. She doesn't want him to see that she's crying. Even though he's only known her for a day, she's known him for most of her life, and it hurts that he doesn't love her like she loves him. She knows it's an outrageous expectation, but some part of her thought that if she could just get to him, it would happen. So she cries all the way to her car and all the way back to her apartment and if she wasn't so tired, she probably would cry all night long.
Elvis watches her go and the full, heavy ache of loneliness settles in his chest again. But she's too grown up, too sure of herself, too much her own person. It would never work. And besides, when she really got to know who he is now, she'd leave like all the others. Best to save himself that heartache. He goes back in the house and up the stairs to bed, takes another handful of pills and calls it a night.
But he misses her in his arms, the big bed feeling cold and empty.
******
Will they see each other again?

If I Can Dream: Chapter 5
A/N: The next few chapters of this one are going to come fast and furious. We're halfway to the end and the last one will be on Christmas Day. Please keep reading! Need to catch up? Masterlist HERE.
Summary: It's 1975 and Jo Bellamy has been in love with Elvis for 20 years. She doesn't even care that they haven't met yet. All she needs is a chance and she's determined to get one
But Elvis doesn't feel much like Elvis anymore. What happened to the man he used to be? He's pretty sure he's long gone.
Can a chance encounter with Jo change the ill-fated trajectory of his life?
Warnings: 18+ minors DNI, no smut in this one but Jo does get into some pretty heavy topics. She describes her trauma history and lightly (and I mean lightly) touches on a history of verbal abuse from her dad, sexual abuse from an ex-boyfriend, and feeling suicidal as a teenager. Some of these things are real for me, so I tried to handle them delicately in a way that wouldn't be triggering, but I need to mention them anyway.
Word count: ~2.4k
Tumblr media
Forever, then. It's right on the tip of his tongue, but he holds it back for some reason. He'll think about that tomorrow. For now, he drifts off to sleep with her in his arms again, perfectly content.
******
On Sunday around 1 in the afternoon, Elvis wakes up to the sound of the shower going. He looks around in the bed for Jo and then puts two and two together. The steam pours out of the bathroom when he pushes the door open.
“You want some company?”
“Shit!” Jo pokes her head out of the shower curtain. “You scared me!”
“I'm sorry, honey. I just missed ya in the bed.”
“Oh, I was trying to shower and be back before you woke up.” He gestures again to the shower.
“Can I join you?” She smiles and opens the curtain, her naked body glistening with the water running down it.
“Absolutely. C’mon, babe.” He smiles as his eyes drift down her body and he whistles.
“You sure you really want this old man?” As he removes his pajamas and drops them on the floor, Jo nods. He steps into the shower and groans when the hot water hits his back. She wraps herself around him and sighs.
“I love this old man.” He kisses the top of her head and holds her tightly.
“He loves you.” They spend the next twenty minutes or so in the shower. He washes her hair and she runs a wet sponge around on his body.
The time together is a blissful escape, but there's something floating around in Elvis's brain that he just can't ignore. Eventually, as they wrap themselves in towels first and then fluffy robes, he has to say something.
“Hey honey?”
“Yeah?”
“Last night in the car, why did you move my hand?” She looks at him strangely.
“When?”
“When you were… suckin’ me… I put my hand on your head and you said 'don't do that.’ Why?” A look of realization crosses Jo's face and she nods. She bites her cuticle for a bit, trying to figure out how to say what she needs to say.
“It's kind of a long story.”
“Well, if you want to tell it, I'm here to listen.” Jo continues to bite her cuticle and then plops down on the bed. She lays down so she doesn't have to look at him while she talks.
“I have to start with my dad. My father was not a nice man, especially when he drank. He never hurt us physically, but his words hurt almost as much. And he yelled. All the time, at me and my mom. I was an only child, so I got the full force of his anger every time.”
“Did he…?”
“Oh, no. Nothing like that. But it set me up to think that's what love looked like. As soon as I started dating, the men I chose were trash. They were always older, mean, angry men who didn't treat me very well.” He takes her hand gently and she squeezes her eyes shut to try to keep the tears from sliding down the sides of her face.
“One of them… well, he liked to be in control, completely.” Elvis nods, thinking of how he used to always be dominant and in charge in the bedroom. “He would… make me go down on him and when I did… well… there's a reason your hand on my head was bad.”
She looks over at him as the tears slide down into her hair. This wasn't a secret she wanted to share, but here it is, on the table for him to see and do with it as he pleases. He holds his arms out for her to crawl into his lap. She does, curling up and leaning into him. He strokes her back affectionately and sits quietly with this information for a bit. Finally, he speaks, but the words feel empty.
“I'm so sorry, honey.”
“It's okay, I'm mostly over it. But that particular thing brings it all back. I can't think I'm losing control of my own body or it gets to me like this.” He holds her face in his hands and kisses her cheek.
“Tink, I promise I'll never do that again. Thank you for tellin’ me.” She nods and kisses his nose. “While we're on the subject of your past, you told me last night that I saved you too.”
She shifts uncomfortably in his lap.
“Yeah?”
“Will you tell me that story?” She looks into his eyes contemplating how it might impact them. But he's going to find out sooner or later. Might as well be now.
“I can't believe I'm about to tell you this. In 1953, my parents split up. Even though my dad was cruel, I was still forced to stay with him sometimes. By the time I was 16, I desperately wanted to make it end. I didn't know how to get out of seeing my dad, but I was desperate. You know how big everything seems when you're 16.”
“Yeah, honey, I remember.” She takes another deep breath and continues.
“Well, Evelyn could tell I was really down. Just when I'd hit the edge of my ability to take what my life was, she forced me to go see this kid play on the back of a truck in a parking lot.”
“No…”
“I fell in love with you that night. And my love for you kept me going even when the worst things were happening to me. Your music was my lifeline. Your movies gave me an escape from my miserable existence. When I had no one else, I knew I had you.” He looks at her incredulously. “I sound insane. God, you probably think I'm crazy.”
“How many shows?”
“Six. Well seven if you count the one where I ran on stage. Three in the fifties, two in Vegas, and one when you were on tour in ‘72.”
“Why didn't you ever try to come talk to me?” He picks up her hand and kisses her knuckles gently.
“I did! I even got kicked out once. But I could never get to you. Fuck, you're probably thinking I'm crazy and trying to figure out how to get away from me-”
“Tink, the only thing I'm thinkin’ right now is that I wish I'd found you in 1955.” She looks up at him, her eyes wide.
“You mean that?”
“With my whole heart. I've needed you for 20 years and didn't even know it.” He moves his fingers up and down her back soothingly.
“You don't think I'm insane?”
“Oh you absolutely are, but not for the reasons you think. I'm glad my music and those terrible movies were a comfort to you. It makes me feel better about making them, honestly. But I wish we'd found each other back then and saved ourselves all the pain.” She shakes her head as he leans in to kiss her cheek.
“No, there's a reason it didn't happen until now. We had to be ready. Think about it, I was so unstable then and you were young and wild. We would've been a recipe for disaster. This is better.” He pulls back and looks at her.
“Honey, you are somethin’ else. I'm so glad I found you.” He holds the side of her face with his hand and presses his forehead against hers. “I love you, Tink. And I don't think I'm ever gonna stop.”
“I love you too, Elvis. So, so much.”
******
After their serious conversation, Jo is ready for an easy day with Elvis and he knows it. They lay in the bed in robes, tangled in each other kissing and tickling and generally acting like young people in love until Jo's stomach growls.
“Oh, Tink, honey are you hungry? I am.” She giggles and her stomach rumbles. He leans over and acts like he's taking bites of her belly, tickling her instead.
“Ah! Yes! I'm hungry!” They both put on fresh pajamas and he takes her downstairs to get something to eat. After that, they lounge in the TV room for a while, not really watching what's on the screens. They spend more time making out like teenagers than anything else. Elvis thinks to himself that he should be embarrassed by their behavior, he is 40 years old after all, but he can't find it in himself to do so. He's so happy with Jo that he's practically giddy. And she's living her literal dream life, so she's not going to stop them from doing what feels natural. Still, as midnight approaches, Jo knows what has to happen. She crawls over into his lap, straddling his thighs again and he wraps his arms around her waist, kissing her neck.
“Elvis, I have to go home.” He pulls back and looks up at her in shock.
“What? Why?” The thought enters his mind that this might be a good thing and give him space to think about what the future of their relationship could possibly be, but his heart feels like it's in a vice.
“I have to work in the morning and I have no clothes here.”
“Honey, we can give Jerry your key and he'll go get some stuff for you.” She smiles and kisses his cheek gently.
“As nice as that sounds, I don't really want Jerry touching my panties. Do you?” He darkens a bit.
“No. I don't.”
“Exactly. I need to go home. I also need to sleep tonight and something tells me if I stay, that won't happen.” He nods and looks down, holding both of her hands in his. The thought of being without her makes his chest hurt. “I'll come back, though, if that's what you want.”
He puts his hand on the side of her face and his eyes search hers for a second.
“Are we kidding ourselves, honey?”
“What do you mean?” Her heart beats faster and it feels like she can hear her pulse in her ears.
“Maybe we should just see this for what it was. I have a career and a daughter and an ex wife and you… I just don't think you'd enjoy the fucking wild ride that my life is. You deserve someone stable, who'll marry you and give you children. I'm never gonna not be Elvis Presley.” She stares at him with her eyes wide and wet.
“I know that. I love you-”
“I love you too, Jo, but maybe this was just a beautiful weekend that we'll never forget.” His voice catches on the last part.
“You don't call me Jo. Elvis, what's happening?!”
“I'm just trying to save us both from the inevitable pain of how this ends.” She stands up off his lap and shakes her head.
“No, you're ending it before it starts. I want to know why.” He sighs deeply. How can he tell her that he's afraid? “You said things to me, Elvis.”
“I know, honey, and I'm sorry but I'm just not-”
“Not what?!”
“Not who you think I am.” The tears that have been threatening to spill out of her eyes finally do and slide down her cheeks.
“Then who are you, Elvis?” He shakes his head and looks at the floor.
“I dunno. But not the kind of man you need.”
“Elvis, look at me.” He reluctantly lifts his chin. “You're the man I want.”
He sits there silently staring up at her. He's torn between pulling her back down into his lap and asking her to marry him and telling her she should leave and never come back.
“Elvis… Do you not want this? Do you not want me?” More silence. He wants her so badly that it hurts, but something makes him hold back and leave everything unsaid. “How can you do this?”
“Jo, I don't know. You make me crazy. And I-I said a bunch of stuff that I shouldn't have. But now that I'm thinking clearly-”
“This is thinking clearly?! Elvis, why don't you just admit that I scare the shit out of you because what we have is real? Why can't you just say that?” His mouth pops open for a bit and then he closes it. How did she know?
“I’m not scared.”
“Bullshit.” She turns and runs up the stairs. He tries to follow her, but she's too fast. When he finally catches up to her, he's winded and she's gathering all of her stuff in the bedroom, which isn't much. He stands in the doorway watching and trying to catch his breath as she pulls off the pajamas and puts her dress back on.
“Jo, please.” She stops and turns to face him with one shoe on.
“I'm not doing this back and forth thing with you, Elvis. I'm too old. I have loved you for twenty years. Either you want me, or you don't-”
“Why do you get 20 years to decide and I get 5 days?!” Her mouth drops and she stares at him in disbelief. But he's right.
“Has it really only been 5 days?”
“Yes!” Her mouth curls into a tiny smile.
“Well that's just ridiculous.” He tries to suppress a grin.
“Yes! It is ridiculous!” She erupts in a giggle and he tries not to laugh. “I'm trying to be serious here, woman.”
Jo flops on the bed and howls with laughter, tears squeezing out of her eyes.
“5 days!” She croaks out between giggles. He sits next to her on the bed.
“Yes.” He looks down at her, his eyes sparkling as her laughter is finally slowing down. “You're not helping me love you any less.”
“You really love me?”
“Yes, goddamnit, I really do. I'm just not sure how we make this work.” She sits up and kisses his cheek.
“Let me go home tonight and go to work tomorrow. We can talk about it when I come over, if that’s still what you want.”
“Yeah, I think that's good.” He pulls her into his lap and buries his face in her neck. “I just need some time to think, Tink. It don't mean I don't love you.”
“I understand.” She lets him continue to nuzzle her.
“And you're right.” He mumbles into her neck. “But I'm not just scared; I'm fuckin’ terrified.”
“I know. It's okay.” She turns and puts her arms around him, kissing his forehead gently.

If I Can Dream: Chapter 4
A/N: I love this story so much. I'm so glad some of you are enjoying it too! Head to my Masterlist if you need to get caught up!
Warnings: 18+ minors DNI, smut, kissing, cussing, oral sex (both receiving), swallowing, fingering

Too good, he thinks as she nods and settles against him. Too good to last.
******
Elvis wakes up around noon with Jo still in his arms naked. He looks down at her with her hair sticking out everywhere, breathing softly. It takes him a second to realize he went to sleep last night without his normal handful of pills. Something about her puts him at ease and allows him to sleep. Or maybe he was just that tired. Either way, he kisses her forehead softly and she stirs.
“Mornin’ babe.” She whines, stretching.
“Hi, Tink. You hungry?” The nickname makes her smile. Then, she sits up suddenly.
“What time is it?!”
“Just a little after noon. Why?” She smacks her forehead with her hand.
“I've got to go get ready for the wedding. I'm supposed to be there at 2.”
“Wedding?” He panics a little.
“Yeah, Evelyn's wedding. The girl I was with at your show. She's… oh shit.”
“What?”
“I forgot to ask Alan.” His expression darkens.
“Who is Alan?” She notices the change in his demeanor and smiles.
“Just a guy at work that I was supposed to bring to the wedding. But… well…”
“What?”
“I'd rather bring you.” He raises his eyebrows and shakes his head.
“No, honey, I can't go to a wedding.” Jo frowns.
“Guess I better call Alan, then.” Now Elvis frowns.
“Now, Tink, honey wait a second-”
“I have to have a date and if you won't come with me…” She looks up at him slyly. He bristles at the thought of another man touching her, even if he is a kind of fake date.
“How big is the wedding?”
“We're not like Memphis royalty. They work at FedEx and their families are here. That's about it.” He seems to be calculating whether he can pull it off.
“You want me to come?”
“Yes! More than anything.” He pulls her over on top of him and starts tickling her. “Ahhh Elvis stop!”
He wraps his arms around her waist and kisses her neck. She lets him snuggle into her and runs her fingers through his hair as they relax into each other.
“I'll come with ya, Tink.”
“You will?” She pulls back and looks him in the eye.
“Yeah. What the hell. To live would be an awfully big adventure, right?” She smiles and kisses him deeply.
“Alright. I have to go do wedding things until around 5 and then I'll come get you.”
“I can meet you there, honey.” He pushes a piece of hair off of her forehead.
“No, I'm not giving you any excuses to back out. I'll come get you.” She smiles and kisses his cheek and he nods.
******
At 5:10, Jo pulls up to Graceland. Jerry lets her in and she waits in the foyer until Elvis comes down in a black suit with silver rhinestone panels on the shoulders.
“I always thought I was late places.” She laughs and Elvis scoffs.
“I'm Elvis Presley. I'm never late.”
“Well, tonight you're just Elvis, so I'm afraid we are late.” He grabs her and pulls her in close, kissing her gently. She giggles and mumbles against his lips. “Hi.”
“Hi, Tink.” She wraps her arms around his neck and whispers.
“This'll be fine. I promise.” He nods and presses his forehead to hers. Something about her makes him feel 25 again.
“You sure you don't wanna run upstairs for about fifteen minutes?” He smiles slyly and leans in to kiss her neck.
“Elvis, we gotta go. I'm a bridesmaid. I can't be too late.” He groans into her neck. She can tell he's very nervous about how this whole thing will play out.
They make their way to one of Elvis's Cadillacs and he drives to the wedding. When they arrive, Elvis slips into a seat at the back and Jo walks down the aisle to take her place at the front. Through the whole ceremony, he can't keep his eyes off of her. She looks radiant in her dark green dress, her brown eyes sparkling as she watches her best friend get married. He thinks of his own wedding, how hasty it had been, without a church and all the things his mama would've wanted. Next time he'll do it differently. Then, he realizes that's the first time he's ever considered getting married again. But when Jo looks out and smiles at him, the thought hits him again. This time he'll do it differently.
When the ceremony ends and the reception starts, word seems to spread pretty quickly that he's there, but Jo does an excellent job of running interference, keeping people away from him. After the newlywed couple has their first dance, they open the floor for people to join them.
“Come on! Let's dance.” Jo tugs on his hand to try to pull him out to the dance floor.
“Oh, Tink, honey-”
“Don't ‘Tink honey’, me. You're my date and I wanna dance. Come on.” He quickly realizes he's already lost this argument and follows Jo to the square in the middle of the room. Luckily, it's filled with couples, so they're able to slip in undetected. Jo convinces him to dance for the better part of an hour before he insists on a break when the band plays one of his songs.
Evelyn and Phil are making their rounds, thanking everyone for coming. When they get to Jo and Elvis, Evelyn freezes. Jo tries to lessen the shock.
“Hey Ev, this is Elvis.” Evelyn laughs.
“I'll say. Wow. Welcome to our wedding, Elvis Presley.” Elvis stands up and shakes her hand genially. Then he turns to Phil, who until this moment has been completely still, just staring at Elvis.
“It's a beautiful wedding. Oh! Here.” He pulls something out of his pocket and then hands Phil the keys to the Cadillac he arrived in. “I didn't have time to get a present.”
“We can't… this is…” Phil stumbles over his words.
“Sure you can. I have plenty of others.”
“Thanks, man.” Phil claps him on the back and shakes his hand. Elvis genuinely enjoys the normalcy of it all. There are no cameras or people shouting questions, just food and drink and dancing.
Towards the end of the evening, a woman comes up to Jo and practically begs for an autograph. Before she can say no, Elvis cuts in.
“It's okay, Tink.” He turns to the woman. “Sure, dear. You have something for me to sign?”
The woman hands him a cocktail napkin and a pen and before too long there's a small crowd of people gathered for autographs and photos. Someone has located a Polaroid camera, so he poses and signs pictures for them. Jo watches him interact with the crowd and it warms her heart. He looks like he did fifteen years ago, happily chatting with fans. Eventually, everyone has what they want and they're all just eagerly standing around listening to him talk, so Jo steps in.
“Alright, that's enough. Leave my date alone. He owes me a dance.” The crowd disperses and he finds her, his eyes sparkling. Somebody requests The Wonder of You and instead of hiding at the table, he grabs Jo and drags her to the dance floor. He wraps her in his arms and sings the whole song in her ear as they sway to the music. When it's finished, he pulls back and looks at her, his eyes wet with tears.
“That song is for you, honey. I didn't know that when I sang it on stage, but it is.” He leans in and kisses her softly, completely forgetting that they're in public. She rests her head on his chest and closes her eyes.
“I love you, Elvis. And I know you just met me, so I'm not expecting-”
“I love you too, Tink.” She looks up at him with her eyes wide. “I do. I'm not sure how, but I do.”
A warm smile spreads across her face and it's like someone lit a candle inside her. He basks in the light of her love and they spend the rest of the evening in this kind of glittering bubble of bliss. Just before they leave, Evelyn comes back and grabs Jo in a hug.
“I didn't believe it. I'm sorry. But you were right. The way he looks at you…”
“It's okay, Ev. I sounded nuts. I probably was nuts. I just don't like to give up.” Jo laughs softly.
“I know. I'm glad you didn't listen to me.”
“Me too.” They embrace one more time and then Evelyn and Phil leave for their honeymoon. The reception ends, so Elvis calls Jerry to come pick them up since he's given their ride to the happy couple.
Jerry shows up with one of the limousines and opens the door for them like a chauffeur.
“Thanks, Jer.” Jerry smiles and whispers.
“You like this one. Figured you'd like to pull out all the stops to keep her around.” Elvis winks.
“I love this one, Jerry.” Then he slides into the backseat next to Jo. Jerry closes the car door and thanks God he went out and got those airplanes.
******
In the limousine, Jo cuddles up against Elvis and he kisses her head. Then, he uses a finger to tip her chin up and kisses her lips. It doesn't take long for the heat to build between them and he turns his body, taking her face in his hand. His tongue explores her mouth and she whimpers softly. When she crawls into his lap and straddles him, he pulls back, breathing heavily.
“Honey, we can't do this in the backseat.”
“Why not?” She peppers him with kisses on his face and neck. He tries to remember why they can't, but his brain is distracted as his blood flows south.
“Jerry…” He nods his head towards the very thin curtain that separates them from the front seat.
“So be quiet…” She slinks down between his legs and he groans softly. Her deft little fingers get his belt and pants undone easily and he shifts in his seat, bucking his hips forward to give her better access to his dick. She pumps him a few times with her hand, but he's harder than either of them expected him to be, so she quickly dives in, wrapping her mouth around his length.
“Fuck, honey.” It's been so long since he's done anything like this that the dirtiness of it is keeping him turned on. And beyond that, Jo’s warm little tongue sliding up and down his cock is doing the job. She pumps him with her hand for a bit, focusing on swirling her tongue around his sensitive head. His hips buck again and he moans.
“Quiet, baby. You have to be quiet.”
“Don't give a fuck. Feels too good.” He grunts, genuinely not caring whether Jerry hears him or not. Honestly, it wouldn't be the first time. Jo smiles and goes back to bouncing her mouth on him. She takes him as deep in her throat as she can, pressing her nose into the soft patch of hair at the base of him, moaning around his cock. He slowly starts to move his hips, thrusting into her mouth, running his fingers in the back of her hair to hold her still. She reaches back and gently moves his hand off of her head and then sits up.
“Don't do that.” He nods and she goes back to what she was doing, pumping him with her hand and sucking lightly on the tip of his dick. She pulls him fully into her mouth again, humming around him and he groans.
“Gonna cum, honey.” She rubs her tongue on the underside of his head and then pulls back a bit.
“Good. Fill this dirty little mouth, baby.”
“Oh God… fuck.” Her words push him right to the edge and when she takes him deep again and sucks, his climax snaps inside him and he cums hard, moaning loudly as she swallows it down. He shudders and throbs in her mouth through his orgasm before he starts to soften and she backs off of him, licking her lips.
“That good, baby?” He nods and pulls her to him, kissing her gently.
“Haven't done anything like that in a long time. I swear, Tink, you make me feel 25 again.” She smiles.
“That's good, because you owe me when we get home, so I hope you still have some energy.” He laughs and squeezes her, kissing her temple.
“You got it, honey.” He zips his pants and she settles into his arms for the rest of the ride. They arrive about five minutes after they finish and look at each other and laugh.
“Perfect timing.” She giggles and climbs out of the car.
“Glad I didn't get on my knees in there. Jerry would've gotten a hell of a show when he opened the door.”
“A visual to go with the sounds he heard. You were not quiet.” Elvis laughs and pokes her in the side as they walk into the house.
“You're too good, honey. I couldn't help myself.” She turns and kisses him in the foyer, parting her lips to give his tongue permission to enter. He kisses her deeply for a few seconds and then pulls back abruptly. “I just realized I haven't gone down on you.”
“It's okay-”
“No. I need to remedy this right away.” He pushes her in front of him up the stairs, his hands on her ass the whole time. She giggles shamelessly, both of them ignoring the fact that there are other people in the house. When they're together like this, they don't even notice there are other people on the planet. At the top of the stairs, Elvis loses his patience and bends over, throwing her over his shoulder to carry her into the bedroom. She's a tiny little thing, so he does it easily and she lets out a small scream.
“Elvis!”
“You were takin’ too long.” He carries her into the bedroom and tosses her on the bed. She scoots to settle with her head on the pillows and he crawls in between her legs on his knees. First, he pushes her dress up and over her head, tossing it to the side. Next, he removes her bra, throwing it somewhere too. When he gets to her panties, he drops soft kisses on her stomach before using both hands to slowly roll them down her legs and off with her shoes. She moans softly as he presses his lips to her ankle and then starts making his way back up. In between each kiss, he whispers.
“I love you. I love you. I love you.”
As he gets closer to her center, his kisses get softer and slower. She whimpers as he gently pushes her thighs apart and lays down between them. He runs his finger up her slit feeling the wetness and clicks his tongue.
“Damn, honey, I haven't even touched ya yet.” She moans softly in response.
“Need it so bad, babe.” He smiles and leans in, licking a stripe up her pussy and then pushes his tongue into her as far as it'll go. Her back immediately arches and she curses loudly. “Fuckkkkk, Elvis.”
His tongue finds her clit easily and he makes slow, languid circles over it. She groans and runs her hands in his hair, pulling slightly. He grunts when she grabs his hair, enjoying the sensation. She starts to sweat and pant as he goes to work on her sensitive bud, licking and sucking and dragging his tongue over it. He's going at her with more intention than he's had with a woman in a long time. He always makes sure they cum, but this time he wants to make sure she stays too. So he pulls out all the stops, moving his tongue on her with increasing fervor. She bucks her hips up into his mouth and he moves back down to fuck her with his tongue as she grinds against him. When he moves back to her clit, he pushes two fingers inside her and her eyes almost cross from the pleasure as he moves them.
“That feel good, honey?” He mumbles against her and she whines in response.
“F-fuck yes.”
“Good girl, now cum for me.” She moans loudly as he gives her the direct order and goes back to licking her, furiously chasing her high.
“Oh God, Elvis, FUCK!” She grabs his hair again and her orgasm crashes over her body, rocking her from the inside out as she holds on tightly and cums hard in his mouth, her pussy pulsing around his fingers. He licks her until he feels her softening on his tongue. Sliding his fingers out, he licks another stripe over her whole pussy and grunts.
“Goddamn, you taste good, honey. Kinda wanna lick you all night until you can't cum anymore.” She whimpers and moans.
“Well I ain't gonna say no to that…” He smiles and leans his face back down to her pussy.
Jo ends up with three consecutive orgasms before she admits defeat, gasping for breath and coated in sweat. Elvis chuckles and rolls over on his back. He hasn't had this much fun getting a woman off in years.
After they both recover a bit and put on some pajamas, he lays down next to her on the pillow and she snuggles into his side. She walks her fingers up his chest and he grabs her hand, kissing her fingertips.
“I love you, Tink. I never thought I'd feel this way again. You brought me back to life. Thank you.” She looks up at him and kisses him softly.
“You saved me too. Someday I'll tell you how. For tonight I'll just say this: I love you too, Elvis Aaron Presley. And I'm yours for as long as you'll have me.”
Forever, then. It's right on the tip of his tongue, but he holds it back for some reason. He'll think about that tomorrow. For now, he drifts off to sleep with her in his arms again, perfectly content.
******
Until next time!

“And you're right.” He mumbles into her neck. “But I'm not just scared; I'm fuckin’ terrified.”
“I know. It's okay.” She turns and puts her arms around him, kissing his forehead gently.
******
Jo flops around in her bed for about 6 hours and then gets up for work. It's amazing how quickly she got used to having Elvis beside her as she sleeps. She puts on her black skirt and red sweater with boots and heads into the office.
For about 9 more hours, she bounces between staring at her word processing machine and the clock, anxious for the end of the day to come. She wonders if he's thinking about her, or if he's realized their tryst was fun, but unrealistic to continue. In some ways, it does seem a little absurd to meet someone and love them so fully and so completely in such a short amount of time. But she knows what she feels and she knows he has to feel something similar. He's everything she ever dreamed he would be and more. She just has to convince him not to let his fear get the best of him.
******
Elvis wanders around the house after Jo leaves looking for traces of her: her glass in the sink, her makeup on the pillowcase, a lipstick kiss she left on his mirror. When he looks at the lip print, he catches his reflection and doesn't cringe for once. There's a light in his eyes that hasn't been there for years. He knows why it's there.
Then he remembers that he sent her away, turns from the mirror, and goes to bed. He sits on the edge of it staring down at the pills in his hand. Does he need them? He hasn't in days. But that was because she had been there, a constant reminder that he had a reason to try to live without them. He carries them into the bathroom and looks at the other bottles, the ones that he takes to get through the day. There's no way he can stop taking all of them just cold turkey like this, but he can cut back. Or he could if she was there. He drops the handful of pills into the toilet and flushes it. Sleeping is nearly impossible, but when he closes his eyes and imagines her next to him, he's able to get a couple of hours.
He drags himself out of bed around 1pm the next day. The Colonel shows up to discuss the New Year's Eve show he's arranged in Michigan. Elvis half listens and hopes he doesn't agree to anything too drastic. On his way out, Colonel Parker corners Jerry.
“He's distracted. What's wrong?” The Colonel gives him a cold stare and Jerry swallows hard.
“He met a girl.”
“He meets girls every day.” Jerry shakes his head.
“No, you misunderstood. He met a girl.” The Colonel looks at him sharply.
“What kind of girl?”
“A good one. She's good for him.” Jerry squares his shoulders defiantly, ready to go to bat for Jo if he has to.
“Hmm. Should I be worried?” Jerry shakes his head, shaggy hair moving wildly.
“No. She might save him.” The Colonel nods and walks out the front door.
Elvis looks at his watch. 2:30pm. Only an hour and half until she comes home.
Home?
Home.
******
At 3:45pm, Jo is ready to crawl out of her skin. She wants to leave so badly to see Elvis. Weirdly, the receptionist comes to her and tells her she has a phone call. She puts out her cigarette and follows the older lady to the phone. Who on earth would call her at work?
“Tink?” His smooth baritone cuts straight to her soul.
“Elvis! Why are you calling me at work?” She's absolutely beaming, trying to keep her voice even.
“Missed ya. But also I wanted to tell you to…” He trails off and Jo can feel him losing his nerve.
“To what, babe?” She hears him sigh.
“To pack some clothes before you come over. I wanted to see if you might wanna stay… for a while…”
“I would love to.” He brightens instantly, so much so that she can practically hear it through the phone.
“Well okay then! I'll see you in a little bit. I love you, honey.” She smiles.
“I love you too, Elvis.” They hang up and the receptionist stares at her.
“Was that really Elvis Presley?” She asks flatly. Jo considers lying for a bit, for his sake, and then decides against it.
“Yeah. It was.”
“Mkay.” Jo nods and starts to walk away. She hears the receptionist whisper under her breath. “Lucky bitch.”
******
When Jo knocks on the door with her suitcase, Elvis actually answers it himself. He grabs her around the waist and kisses her like they've been apart for months.
“Wondered when you'd get here.” He presses his forehead to hers.
“Well, I had to go pack, didn't I?” She gestures to the suitcase and he picks it up to bring it inside.
They settle into dinner, both of them avoiding the inevitable conversation that they started last night. Finally, when there's no more food or ice cream or anything else to distract them, Elvis clears his throat and lights a cigar. They're settled in the TV room, but there's nothing playing on any of the screens.
“Is this a conversation I need to be smoking for?” Jo asks tentatively. He smiles a little and she reaches for his cigar, taking a drag and handing it back to him.
“Tink, I spent the whole day thinking about it.” She expects him to go on, but he doesn't. Her heart is in her throat.
“And what did you come up with?” He lets out a puff of smoke and looks at her.
“I can't stand being without you.” She smiles. “But I have no idea how we make this work.”
“What do you mean?” Now it's her turn to take the cigar.
“Well, I'm not going to change anything about my life. I really can't. And you have a whole life of your own. I can't ask you to uproot all of that just to be with me. What if we… don't… what if it ends? And then what?” She smokes for a bit in silence and then speaks softly.
“What if I die tomorrow?” He blinks and his eyes flash with something he's not ready to admit.
“What the hell are you talkin’ about, honey?”
“What if I'm driving to work and one of those big trucks hits my car and I die?”
“Don't even talk like that.” He takes the cigar back, gritting his teeth.
“What if it happens in three years? What if you die?” Elvis is visibly uncomfortable with the way this conversation is going.
“You better make your fuckin’ point, Tink.”
“We have no idea what might happen tomorrow. Or in three years. All we have is right now. You can't live your life thinking about all the ways it can go wrong. What kind of adventure would that be?”
“No kind.” She takes the cigar.
“Exactly. So now I'm gonna ask you this. How do you wanna live your life right now?” Elvis looks at the woman in front of him: the one who ran on stage and then threw paper airplanes over the wall to get to him and make sure he was okay, the one who made him leave the house for the first time in too long, the one who convinced him to jump into a freezing pool and then made love to him even when he thought he couldn't, the one who brought him back to life and shows him every second that it's worth living.
“With you.” He reaches out and cups her cheek and she smiles and leans into his hand like a cat. She takes another quick drag and then kisses his palm.
“Then why do we need this big plan? Let's just live and be together until we can't anymore. Isn't that better?” He takes the cigar and puts it out in the ashtray. Jo isn't sure whether she should cry or not, so she just sits and watches him.
“You never cease to amaze me, honey.” He pulls her into his lap straddling his thighs and kisses her lips gently. Then he whispers. “Let's be together until we can't anymore.”
“Yes…” She giggles and nods. He kisses her again with more urgency this time and on the third kiss, both of their mouths are open as their tongues dance wildly against each other. She rolls forward, pushing her skirt up her thighs and presses herself against him. He moans softly into the kiss and grabs her ass with both hands, pulling her in as close as she can get. Reluctantly, she breaks the kiss. “Should we go upstairs?”
“Why?” He kisses her neck and drags his tongue up to her ear– a move he hasn't tried in years. She groans as he nibbles on her earlobe.
“Well, I'd like to do more than just kiss you-”
“We're on a perfectly good couch.”
“Elvis.”
“Tink.” He lifts her up and flips her over so that he's on top of her. “I had this couch made deep like this for a reason.”
“I'll try not to think about how many women you've had on this couch..” She giggles as he kisses down her neck to her collarbone.
“Smart girl. But I have to say, you're my favorite.” He lifts her sweater over her head and off, tossing it across the room. His lips drift down her chest to the place where her bra meets her skin. He gently pulls the cup down and slips his tongue around her nipple. Her back arches as he pulls it into his mouth and then releases it, moving over to her other nipple. “I want this off, honey.”
She nods, sitting up a little to unfasten her bra and take it off. He grunts when he sees her breasts bounce free, leaning down to kiss and nibble her soft skin.
“I bet you say that to all of us.” She lets out a small half-laugh. He stops and pulls back, looking down at her seriously.
“No, I mean it, Tink. I don't think I want any more. Just you.” She holds her hand up to the side of his face and traces the line of his brow down to his jaw and up to his lips. He kisses her fingertips and waits for her to speak, but she doesn't. She just runs her fingers through his hair and down his neck to his shoulder, finally landing at the middle of his chest under his necklace and directly above his heart, her eyes following the path she makes with her hand. He starts to get nervous that he's said something wrong. “Say something, honey.”
Her eyes flit back up to meet his clear blue ones and she opens her mouth, but closes it again.
“What is it?” Now he's really worried. She's never been speechless before. Finally, she speaks so softly he can barely hear her.
“I don't know how to tell you that I think I was meant for you without sounding like I'm crazy.”
“Oh, honey. If you're crazy, then so am I.” He dives into a deep and passionate kiss as she pulls at his clothes, pushing his jacket off of his shoulders and shirt over his head and off. He yanks her skirt down her legs, tearing at her panties with a fire he hasn't felt in years. The need to be close to her is so strong, it overwhelms any sense of doubt or apprehension as she pushes his pants down just enough to free his erection. The next thing he knows, he's on top of her with his cock sliding in and out of her as she whimpers and moans and claws at his back. He groans with the sensation of her wrapped around him as he pounds her with a fervor he didn't know he still had. The heat of their passion is matched only by their love for each other.
“Oh God, Elvis.” She moans in his ear as he hits her g-spot at a relentless pace. Her legs wrap around his waist and he grunts with the change in angle. Their skin burns with sweat in the places where it meets and she whimpers as she feels her climax approach. “Oh fuck!”
Her body shakes involuntarily as her orgasm slams into her like a freight train, rushing through her with the speed and intensity of a lightning bolt. She clings to him as he continues to rut into her while she cums, her pussy throbbing and pulsing around his dick.
“Goddamn, Tink, honey, I love it when you cum.” He moans and slams into her one last time, pressing his forehead to hers as his cock twitches and fills her with warmth.
They lay there, both of them trembling in the aftershocks of their orgasms. He kicks his pants all the way off and then rolls onto his back to settle her against his side with her leg and arm thrown over his body.
“Move in with me.” He whispers into her hair. She picks her head up and looks into his face.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Move in here and we'll be crazy together. You are my big adventure, honey. Live with me.” He holds her chin between his thumb and forefinger as he talks.
“I'm gonna need to pack more than that little suitcase.”
“So that's a yes?”
“That's a fuck yes, babe.” He giggles and tickles her sides excitedly and they laugh together on the big-enough couch, naked and unafraid of the future… for now.

What next?

If I Can Dream: Chapter 7
A/N: A Christmas surprise! Two chapters in one day! Merry Christmas, friends! Masterlist.
Warnings: none, this is pretty damn fluffy.
Word count: ~3.2k

“That's a fuck yes, babe.” He giggles and tickles her sides excitedly and they laugh together on the big-enough couch, naked and unafraid of the future… for now.
******
That night passes with Elvis and Jo talking for most of it until they finally fall asleep in bed all wrapped around each other just before sunrise. He's convinced her to stay home from work, so they make love when they wake up and then lay in bed until almost 3pm. Finally, she drags him out of bed and they spend the rest of the day in the kitchen. She has the idea for them to make Christmas candy and a gingerbread house. What they really make is a mess, but they have a blast licking icing and chocolate off of each other. They settle into the TV room with It’s a Wonderful Life on the projector and the candy they made that Elvis hasn't eaten yet. All in all, it's a beautiful day together and when they settle in bed at the end of it, Elvis is ready to spend every day like that. He mentions something to that effect to Jo and she makes a nervous sound.
“What's that sound for, Tink?” She looks at him with an awkwardly pained smile.
“I have to go home tomorrow.”
“Home?” He's confused, thinking she's already at home.
“To see my parents, I mean. For Christmas Eve.”
“Tomorrow is Christmas Eve?” She rolls her eyes and giggles.
“Yes. It is. And my parents always have this big holiday party for the family.”
“Oh.” He gets a little sad thinking that he'll have to spend the next day without her.
“You could come with me.” She says cautiously. Elvis makes a thinking face.
“How many people?”
“Just my mom and stepdad and my step-siblings. You've already met my brother-in-law and niece. I also have a stepbrother who is married with 3 kids. My aunt and uncle will probably be there too. They don't have any kids, so they usually come to our holiday things. But that's all. Not a huge crowd.” She smiles and looks at him hopefully. He grumbles, knowing that he's going to have a hard time telling her no.
“Okay. I already went to a wedding and survived. I guess I can go to a Christmas party.” She squeals and snuggles into his chest.
“I love you so much.” He wraps his arms around her and kisses the top of her head.
“I love you too, Tink.”
******
Elvis stands in his closet in his robe, staring at the rows and rows of clothing. They're late and he knows it, but he has no idea what on earth he should wear to a family Christmas party. All of his clothing is either formal paparazzi-worthy outfits, jumpsuits, clothes that don't fit him, or tracksuits. None of those seem appropriate for where he's supposed to be going right now. He hears Jo's voice as she calls out to him.
“Elvis! Come on, babe, we're late!” She's taken to calling him ‘babe’ as often as possible and he really likes it. But today it just seems to add to his anxiety. He feels like he's going to let her down or embarrass her no matter what he chooses. She finally finds him in the closet near tears. “Babe, what's wrong?”
“Nothin’, honey.”
“Then why aren't you dressed yet? We gotta go.” She clicks her tongue to indicate they need to hurry. He just closes his eyes and hangs his head. “What is it? Talk to me.”
“I don't have anything to wear.”
“You literally have more clothes than anyone I've ever-”
“I don't have anything right to wear.” He slides his glasses off and pinches the bridge of his nose. She wraps her arms around his waist and squeezes him.
“Anything you wear will be perfect.” He looks down at her in her red dress with her makeup perfect. She looks so young and pretty, like she doesn't belong with him at all.
“Tink, I should probably just stay here.” She pulls away from him and looks up at him with a frown on her face. “Now don't go makin’ that face.”
“You told me you'd come with me.”
“Honey, I've just been thinkin’ and I don't-”
“Do you love me?” She puts her hands on her hips.
“Of course I do.”
“Do you trust me?” He sighs deeply.
“Yes.” She turns to the rows of clothing and picks out a black silk shirt with puffed sleeves, a red scarf, and some black pants and hands them to him.
“There. You can pick your belt and jewelry.” It's an outfit he never would've put together himself, but once he gets a gold belt and necklace on with his favorite black and red jacket, he's satisfied. He's especially pleased when he stands next to Jo in her red minidress with black tights and boots. They look like they belong together now and he smiles. There's just one thing missing. He walks over to a drawer and pulls out a box with a red bow on it.
“I was saving this for tomorrow, but I think you need it tonight.” She takes the box and looks up at him. She's no spring chicken, so she recognizes a jewelry box when she sees it. He watches as she opens the box to reveal a gold necklace with the letters ‘TLC’ around a lightning bolt, the whole thing encrusted in diamonds. “What do ya think?”
Jo is speechless as she looks at the necklace. She's never had anyone buy her such a lavish gift. Her voice comes out as a whisper.
“It's too much.” He tips her chin with his knuckle to make her look up at him.
“Nothing is too much for you. I can never repay you for what you've given me. So please, take the necklace and anything else I give you.” She nods slowly and he takes the necklace out of the box and puts it on her. He pulls back and whistles. “It suits you.”
“It's beautiful. Thank you.” She touches it with her fingertips gently.
“It goes with mine.” He pulls the gold ‘TCB’ necklace out for her to see. She’s seen it before, but never really given it much thought. “It tells people that you go with me.”
She wraps herself around him again and pulls him into a deep kiss. He holds her close and hums as he presses his lips to hers. When they finally break the kiss, he sighs.
“Alright, let's go. Meetin’ my girlfriend’s family. I'm not nervous at all.” She looks at him funny.
“Girlfriend?”
“Well, yeah. What did you think you were?” She shakes her head and shrugs.
“I didn't want to assume.” He grabs her and tickles her sides and she giggles, trying to get away.
“You're mine, Tink. If you've forgotten, I'm happy to throw you on this bed and remind you.”
“Later. Right now I have to take my boyfriend to meet my family.” She takes off running down the stairs and he follows her as quickly as he can, all the way to her car, where he pins her against it and kisses her, his tongue slipping into her mouth as he presses his hips against hers.
“You sure you don't want me to have Jerry drive us?” He whispers in her ear, his breath hot against her skin. She whimpers, but tries to resist.
“No, babe, your cars are too obvious. People will follow us. We need to be in my clunker.” He looks at her car. It really is a sad excuse for a vehicle.
“Well, okay then.” They slide into the front seat and he ducks so that the people at the gates don't see him.
******
When they pull into the neighborhood where Jo's parents live, Elvis looks at her in shock. It's one of the fanciest neighborhoods in Memphis with big, old houses that are both historic and beautiful. His jaw drops when she pulls up in front of a massive colonial mansion and stops the car.
“This is where you grew up?!” She laughs.
“God, no! This is my stepdad’s house. His family owns a lot of real estate in Memphis and he's some bigwig at a bank. They got married when I was 17.”
“Oh…”
“No, I grew up in an apartment with my deadbeat dad and my mother working two jobs to make ends meet. She's living the American dream now.” He nods and then leans in and kisses her cheek.
“So are you.” She looks at him and giggles.
“No, babe, I'm living a goddamn fairy tale.” He chuckles. “Now, come on. We're already almost an hour late.”
At the front door, Jo's not sure who is more nervous, her or Elvis. She holds onto the bottle of wine they've brought with a vice grip. Finally, her stepdad answers the door.
“Jo! You made it. And you brought… company…”
“Hi George. This is Elvis.” To his credit, her stepdad adjusts quickly and shakes Elvis’s hand without any further ado. As they make their way through the foyer, George grabs Jo.
“Your mother is going to have heart failure.” She looks at him with her eyes wide.
“Oh God. Let's hope not.” She runs to be in front of Elvis when he walks into the dining room where everyone is seated for dinner.
“Jo’s here!” Her mother jumps up from the table and runs to her, grabbing her in a hug. “And who have you- oh my God.”
“Hello, ma'am, I'm-”
“Elvis Presley.” Jo’s mom holds her hand over her mouth as Elvis stands there awkwardly. Everyone at the table is silently staring and Jo starts to panic. Maybe this was not a good idea.
“Elvis!” Amy launches herself out of her chair and onto Elvis like she's known him her whole life. He catches her in a hug.
“Hey, kiddo.” That seems to jar Rob back to reality as well, so he stands and shakes Elvis's hand.
“Nice to see you again. This is my wife Christine.” The introductions finally begin and everyone seems to relax significantly except Jo's mother. She's still starstruck, so Jo goes over to her.
“Mother. Please calm down. He's just a person.”
“A person you've idolized for two decades! How did you… when did… he…?” She stumbles over her whispered words.
“We met at one of his shows. We've been together since then. Now, please calm down.” Jo doesn't mention that the show was less than two weeks ago. Elvis walks back over to them, hoping he can put her mom at ease. He puts his arm around Jo's waist and holds his hand out for her to shake. She looks up at him and puts her hand in his and he promptly lifts it to his lips and kisses it.
“Elvis, this is my mother, Rose.” Jo looks up at him and he smiles.
“It's a pleasure to meet you, Rose. Thank you for raising such an amazing daughter.” Jo’s mother giggles.
“Oh! Aren't you sweet? Thank you. It's lovely to meet you.” Once the initial pleasantries are finished, Rose and the rest of the room settle back into dinner as Elvis and Jo take their seats. The meal passes with good food and polite conversation that gets more and more comfortable as each minute passes. By the end of it, everyone is talking and laughing with Elvis like they've known him for years. Jo is impressed with his ability to blend in, and honestly he is too. But he reminds himself that he's just a person like they are. There's no reason he should act any different. He glances over at Jo every once in a while and smiles, his body filled with a kind of golden warmth when he looks at her.
“She's really something, isn't she?” Jo’s aunt Carol asks, catching Elvis as he stares at her.
“She really is.” He looks at Carol and smiles.
“She's been through a lot. It's nice to see her happy. My sister did her best to raise her, but they didn't have it easy. She's done well for herself.” Elvis nods, not sure where this conversation is going. “I'd hate to see her go through more. She deserves something real.”
Ah, there it is.
“Ma'am, I assure you, I have no intentions of hurting her.” Elvis looks at Carol seriously.
“We never intend to hurt people, do we?” Jo had mentioned that her aunt was tough and protective of her to a fault. This must be what she meant.
“No, I suppose not. But I'll say this: I've never loved anyone the way I love her. If I ever hurt her, it'll hurt me more.” Carol gives him a small smile and pats his hand.
“Good answer.” She moves the conversation to a different topic and he catches Jo's eye. Her eyebrows raise when she sees who he is talking to, but he gives her a warm smile and she's reassured. For a couple that's only been together for a matter of days, they communicate without talking pretty well.
The evening passes fairly quickly with the children opening presents and the adults drinking hot apple cider and eggnog. At one point, Jo's sister-in-law looks around the room for someone to take her six-month-old while she deals with something else for the kids. Without hesitation, Elvis takes him and holds him in his lap, playing with him and talking to him quietly.
“He's good with kids.” Jo’s stepsister Christine comments.
“Yes, well, he's a dad.”
“Mhmm. He only has the one daughter?” Jo answers without taking her eyes off of Elvis.
“Yes, Lisa Marie.”
“Have you met her?” She turns to look at Christine.
“No. I suppose I will tomorrow, though.”
“Sounds like it's pretty serious, then.” Amy runs up to her mom and Christine wipes the chocolate off of her face before she runs away again.
“Yeah… you could say that. He asked me to move in with him.”
“Oh, my. Is that what you want? A life with a rock star?” Jo purses her lips.
“I want a life with him.”
“You don't want a family?”
“Why couldn't we have a family?” Christine shrugs.
“He already had one and it didn't work. I'd think he's done with that part of his life. And I've read that he-”
“I'm going to stop you right there. Whatever you've read is probably not true. And as far as a family goes, he and I are all the family I need.” Jo means it when she says it, but the second she does, she starts to wonder if it's really true. Christine nods.
“As long as you're happy.”
“I am.” Jo takes a big swig of cider.
“Then I'm happy for you.” Just then, Elvis makes some face at Jo as one of the little girls puts a Christmas bow on his head and she almost giggles openly. Christine catches the interaction and puts her hand on Jo's shoulder. “He seems like he really loves you.”
“He does. And I love him.”
“Then that's all you need to know.” She pats Jo's shoulder and then Amy is back and she has to go get her something in the kitchen. Jo turns back to Elvis where he bounces her nephew on his knee and talks very seriously to her other two nieces, his hair now full of bows. Would he be willing to have more children? She's always thought of herself with kids someday, but is Christine right about that part of his life being over?
******
When the evening concludes, Elvis and Jo say their goodbyes and head back to her car to drive home. He's in the driver’s seat this time and she's leaned against his shoulder happily.
“Hey, honey, can we take a quick detour?” She sits up a bit and nods.
“Sure, babe.” He turns down a road that will lead them out to the country, but not really towards Graceland. About twenty minutes later, he pulls the car off of the road and parks in a small clearing.
“You got a blanket in the trunk?” She nods, glad that she does. He hops out and fetches the blanket. “Come on, Tink.”
She grumbles and slides out of the car. He wraps the blanket around his body and pulls her to him so that the blanket covers her too.
“Now look.” She looks out where he points and gasps. They're on a bit of a hill, so she can see the whole field below them filled with fresh, virgin snow. Above that, the moon is almost full as it glitters on the blanket of white crystals. The image is breathtaking and she almost cries with how pretty it is.
“It's beautiful.”
“This is one of my favorite spots. I love how many stars there are out here. And especially when there's moonlight on the snow.” She's quiet for a bit as she takes in the scenery. Then she whispers.
“Thank you for sharing it with me.” He squeezes her and presses a kiss to her temple.
“I want to share everything with you.” Jo sighs. There's been a question burning inside her since she talked to Christine at the party.
“Can I ask you something?” Her heart flutters in her chest. It's not even what she thought she wanted, but being with him is different.
“Sure, Tink.” She hesitates for a moment, scared that this might be another thing that comes between them. He has the same fear, even though he doesn't know what she's about to say. Taking a deep breath, she continues.
“Would you want to have more kids?” He leans down and turns so that he can look her in the eye. She waits anxiously as he searches her face. At first, he's reluctant to make promises, but then the image of them in front of the fireplace with their little family passes through his mind and he knows his answer.
“Yes, honey. I'd love for us to have a little Elvis Junior or baby Jo runnin’ around.”
“Really?”
“Of course, Tink. I love kids and I love bein’ a daddy and I think you'd make a great mama. If it's what you want, we'll have a dozen kids.” She giggles.
“I think one would be plenty.”
“Whatever you want, honey.” He wraps the blanket tighter around them and she lays her head back on his chest. Fat snowflakes start to drift down from the sky as they stand there together.
Jo is as happy as she's ever been living her fairy tale. But she can't help the niggling thought that this might all be over as soon as he leaves for tour or Vegas. He's saying all the right things, but does he mean them long term? She's never been one to worry about the future, but the thought of losing him makes her stomach turn over. Still, right now he has his arms around her and she's perfectly content to stay there forever, looking out over the untouched snow with the moonlight sparkling like diamonds.
******
Almost the end!
