Now I'm gonna be totally honest, I DO have a favorite twin and its Ingo <XDD But I also fully understand and support your point!

What makes Ingo and Emmet so fun and interesting to me is their bond! How they mirror each other, how they interact, their strength as a team! Sure separating them for the angst is great an all- but truly showing them together and more importantly as equals is where the good stuffs at!

This is also why I usually try to wrap up their separation arcs in my AUs, and also don't really enjoy reading any Legends Arceus content.. seeing Ingo alone is not only heartbreaking,, but its also just not as fin. Ingo and Emmet are stronger together :)

XDD All of those titles made me laugh! And I see your point, but I have a few counter points to this ask..

For 1, to keep with the theme, I would want to/have to make this cape IRL in order to add it to my sona. Now if the last 4 quilts have shown me anything? Its that I'm not super great at making quilts <XDD

If it was that challenging to make it on a smaller scale? I cant imagine how much trouble I'd have trying to make a full size one! <XDD Plus buying the materials... having to physically get up, go buy the stuff I need and make it. With these health issues I've been battling, that's not something I wanna do atm.. 😅Not to mention with how hot its been lately, I don't think I need a quilt anyways-

And then lastly- I'd have to draw myself with it every time! I like my sona being a simplistic blob that has minimal colors and not much of a model to keep too. I worry a quilt might take that away.. :(((

I altered the story of Welcome Home to make my version of Sally a teenager. So I was thinking she could be bluish-white to look like a young star..? But looking back I don't like the blue.. For story purposes she might stay a teen, but I think I'll keep her yellow <XDD

Kid Galahad Review

In a rare departure from the "Elvis-vehicle" formula, Elvis doesn't have black hair and isn't shoved in our faces with every scene. To be specific we go back to Loving You where, despite being billed as the star, Elvis isn't entirely the focus. This movie was made by United Artists who had a different idea on how to work with Elvis. A formula wasn't entirely perfected, so studios outside of Paramount still felt that Elvis had the range to be more than just a comedic singer.

Unfortunately, compared to the huge success of Blue Hawaii, Kid Galahad seemed to have been swept under the rug and forgotten. Colonel Parker saw this as a sign that the people have spoken and Elvis as a real actor wasn't meant to be. The "failure" of Kid Galahad officially ended any hopes of prioritizing good story telling over soundtracks. Were the doubters correct in saying Elvis flew too close to the sun? Or were the powers that be simply too harsh to pull the plug on Elvis' acting dreams? Let's find out.

We immediately get our first song. "King of the Whole Wide World" is a pretty jazzy opening song. There's a swinging brass band. As weird as it is to have this play over a truck, we have no reason to believe this isn't an instrumental on the radio. At the same time when we do have a close up of him singing, you can tell the lip-synching isn't that great. I have no idea why a recently discharged soldier wouldn't have any indication of rank. It feels like an afterthought on that front. It's nit-picky but I don't get the concept of including a detail like that and not following through with it.

So we get introduced to Walter Gulick and he's looking for work as we get introduced to Cream Valley, New York. We get introduced to the people of Grogan's Gaelic Gardens. Just in this first interaction, I get personality. I already understand why Dolly is the way she is when she says she's Willy's fiancee. For once an Elvis character being southern is explained in the story. Despite being born in that small town, Walter's parents died when he was young so he had to be raised by family in Kentucky. There's no reason to go into further detail because the story doesn't need it. A perfect balance between establishing a character and moving the story along.

So we get introduced to Willy Grogan. Just by Gig Young's acting I 100% believe that he's this deadbeat business owner who likes to gamble his money away. Given the history of organized crime's involvement in boxing and in New York period, I totally get why this is included. The mob wants its money and never appreciates someone like him not being able to pay. Naturally when he can't pay for his car, the mob takes it away. This forces Willy to embarrass himself by having to lift a ride from the grocery store's delivery truck.

He meets Walter and immediately assumes that Dolly is having an affair. This introduces the concept of Willy being so insecure about his relationship with her, that he assumes every other man has bad intentions. Walter offers up his "skills" as a boxer until he could meet with the owner of the mechanic's garage. We get more depth on the mob's involvement with Willy's camp. Turns out Willy was a witness to a crime so the boss has his lackeys hang around the camp so Willy doesn't talk. I admit even after multiple watches I don't fully understand everything that was said about this. I won't take points off for this since you still get the idea that the mob's putting Willy in a sticky situation that can't be easily resolved.

This scene works so well despite not being all that grand or climatic. We have a lot of subtlety here. That's something a lot of movies lack. We don't get a lot of characters trying to explain something the audience already knows. Even when we pan down and see Walter's trainer Lew limping, we don't get this song and dance about why that happened. Everything's explained just by watching the movie and taking in the character's expressions. Meanwhile, we get introduced to Willy's sister who looks so much younger than him. Age gaps in siblings exist but it's still an odd casting choice. Turns out she's infinitively more responsible as she has to keep bailing Willy out of financial trouble.

This is the best acting Elvis can ever do. Basic instinct requires you to duck or in some way react when you see a fist coming at your face. A human being not having that ability or even reacting to the pain of being hit simply wouldn't live long. I have no idea how you can teach someone how to consciously control an automatic response. So to see Walter constantly get hit and not have any reaction or protect his face in anyway is just incredible. Watching this actually made me think of the 3 Stooges short "Fright Night" that had a similar comedy of errors including Walter almost accidentally knock out Joey. We also get some nice comedy that was supposedly ad-libbed where Walter's only priority is his five dollars. The fake blood is obvious but because it's meant to be just quickly wiped off it doesn't take away from the overall quality of the movie.

Throughout this scene we get the boxers singing "This Is Living". I love this song. It's not because the song is uniquely written but in the context of this movie, it's just so perfectly intertwined with the story. For once Elvis isn't the main singer. The backup artists do most of the work for this scene and it works so well because these boxers have their own group. Walter isn't exactly part of them yet so there's no reason for him to intrude. It isn't until Joey invites him to sing that he joins in when necessary. Moments like this where we let the side characters and even Elvis just be are what make some of his movies better than others. It's letting these characters be people and not plot devices that allow you to feel something for Walter. Heck none of these boxers, including Joey, really do that much in the story. But they don't need to because just by watching Walter interact with them, we get the idea that they mean something to him. They make him feel included and give him a sense of belonging.

This image of Walter looking at Joey is a nice example of non-verbal acting being able to say more. There's a palpable tension until Joey makes a joke that assures Walter no ill will exists. I love that because they could've easily made Joey the cliched rival who gets all salty that he's no longer the best. Joey isn't jealous of Walter at all and if anything is just in awe of his natural power. He's written to be a real person instead of merely a plot device to foil Walter. So many small details like this add up to being a sign the movie had effort put into it.

So Willy wants to sign Walter to be part of his camp and Lew explains why this is obviously a bad idea. Walter boxing the way he does makes no sense to me. If he had experience boxing in the military, he had to have learned how to block. That's literally the first thing you learn so you don't get hurt. I can understand if this was any other cliched boxing movies where Walter has skill but isn't polished, but that's not the issue. Walter doesn't know how to use the most basic defensive technique. Lew explaining all of this makes perfect sense because any trainer would look at Walter's technique and just groan. Even if Walter has this insane ability to not respond to being hit, that doesn't mean he's immune to head injuries.

A confrontation happens off screen and Walter knocks out a lackey. Turns out he was hitting on Dolly and Walter stepped in. You would think this would lead to a cliched love triangle where Dolly ends up falling in love with Walter. But they don't as there's nothing to suggest she's falling in love or that he has any feelings for her. A nice twist that even the original movie used. Willy is of course jealous that Walter protected Dolly but if anything it speaks to his character that he's also mad at Dolly for not coming to him. Lew and Maynard, the cook, find that one of Otto's lackey's had a gun on him. Turns out Otto had so little trust in Willy, that he's ordered his lackeys to carry weapons. You can clearly put together that if Willy talked, they will kill him.

We get a nice blink and you'll miss it of Lew holding a poster about an actual boxing match that happened in the 1920s. I love the real life references to boxers and boxing history. It shows that the creative team did their research. People who know about boxing would know about John L. Sullivan and Jack Dempsey. Details like this add color to a movie and shows that effort was put into building this world.

I love the car that Walter and Lew find. Walter feeling this need to spruce it up no matter what it'll take is so wholesome. Lew even being in this garage with Walter and supporting his decision to do this is also wholesome. When has an Elvis movie ever had this much of a focus on his character having actual friends? It rarely happens because of concerns that they'll take the focus away from him. Here giving Walter friends, makes Walter shine even more. A good person doesn't have to be boring and by giving Walter multiple relationships with people it gives him depth.

When Rose arrives in Cream Valley, Willy shows just how terrible of a person he is. Despite her being a grown woman, Willy treats her like a child. Like she's still so young and green that she couldn't possibly help him. I don't know if it's out of male pride or if he genuinely believes she can't do it. Even when Dolly comes downstairs he doesn't dare introduce her as his fiancee. And the reason why: He didn't think she could handle such a scandalous relationship. By modern standards this would be completely ridiculous as someone Rose's age would likely have learned at least something about sex one way or another. Even the concept of Willy and Dolly living together despite not being married by modern standards is a nothing-burger. But because it's the 1960s Dolly of course is upset as even back then what Willy is doing is a bit much and if anything makes him a hypocrite. He claims to protect his sister from degenerates, yet by those same standards is also one by having relations with Dolly before marriage.

Walter meets Rose and I immediately support this pairing. The soft focus on the close up works so well. Just by watching them interact you buy the love at first sight cliche. Walter looks smitten and you can tell she appreciates him too. This immediately foils how Willy sees Rose. He sees her as if she's still a child and shouldn't dare start dating anyone. Walter however, sees her as a woman. He's attracted to her, but because he respects her as an equal he doesn't force himself on her.

Everyone's character works so well. Lew is a classic New York tough love type of guy. He doesn't hand Walter things on a silver platter but he still believes in ensuring Walter gets his fair share. Lew makes for a great foil to Willy. Lew has morals and isn't willing to let Walter get hurt because Willy just wants to make a few bucks. He's just so supportive of Walter where at times he looks like a proud mom.

The scene of Walter riding his now repaired Model T demonstrates that. They have to travel to Albany, New York for his first fight and since Willy's car was repossessed they have to take the antique. Lew can just keep to himself but he's so proud of Walter. "Riding the Rainbow" works well in the context of the movie. Walter sings along with the radio and it's such a natural thing to do while you drive long distances.

I love this face. The fact that Walter is just staring at his opponent with a blank expression is just gold. The promoter calling him lamb eyes is such a fitting nickname. It's like how some animals just don't know they're about to die. That's Walter as he's trying to comprehend the severity of the situation and is failing miserably. I have no idea if Elvis was told to look like that but it ultimately doesn't matter as it's just so fitting. Walter had never been in a professional fight before so naturally that would be overwhelming.

In spite of Walter's terrible defensive abilities, he manages to win. Everyone is stunned by this ability but now there's no doubt about his ability to win. While Muhammed Ali was renowned for the "rope a dope" method, Walter still adds a layer of complexity by not blocking. Walter not being able to register getting hit is an unteachable skill that can lead to him being very successful. And he is as he begins to go on a winning streak. He makes it up to the championship fight slated to take place around Labor Day.

Walter returns to Cream Valley where it's the 4th of July celebration. Maynard had put Dolly up to supervising his corned beef. Now obviously that's a traditionally Irish product but I admit this is the first time I've heard of people eating it for the 4th of July. If there's any Irish Americans in New York or in general out there let me know if this is a thing. Me personally I would've just went with making it St. Patrick's Day. Even though it's in March, it's not that farfetched to have a warm spring. Plus you give Walter more time to train as opposed to just giving him one summer to take on a fighter who's likely trained for years.

Walter meanwhile starts getting really close with Rose. He serenades her with "Home Is Where The Heart Is" and I love this ballad. You can tell that sparks are starting to fly. We do get a funny moment where Walter gets annoyed about being interrupted. He was about to kiss Rose then just goes "whaaaa" when Lew asks him how they're going to get to the picnic. I just love small moments like this where it doesn't mean anything in the long run, but when put together makes for an entertaining movie.

This is how you do multiple songs in a short period of time correctly. I don't care that we just had a song not even five minutes ago because both songs adequately fit into the scene. This is a 4th of July picnic so naturally there's going to be music involved. "I Got Lucky" isn't a typical ballad he uses for serenading his girl. What adds to the natural feeling of this scene is if you look closely Walter crosses his eyes near the end of the song and it makes Rose smile and almost start laughing. It wasn't intended to happen, but it wouldn't have mattered if she did laugh. If anything it would give her a nice character moment by laughing along to Walter being cheesy. Couples do things like this all the time and it helps you see these two as real people.

So the young couple start walking and talk about Walter's upcoming fight. Despite having different opinions about it, Rose understands why Walter is doing it. We don't get this cliche disagreement induced breakup where we don't see her again until the climax. I like that. It shows that this couple is fully supportive of each other even if they don't agree on decisions being made. Walter isn't doing this as his permanent job. As much as he's friends with the people in Willy's camp, Walter is using boxing as a means to get what he really wants. Walter doesn't need to learn some type of lesson and I'm glad the movie doesn't want to add drama about them not agreeing about his decision to box.

Walter is an underrated feminist icon. Because feminism is about treating women as equals. Walter doesn't ignore Rose's opinions. Even if they don't agree about him fighting against Sugar Boy, he completely understands why she feels that way. He isn't using her as a tool to spite Willy. Walter wants to get married because she wants to get married. It's a mutual decision made by two fully consenting adults. "WE DECIDED TO GET MARRIED" is the most important line in their relationship. Rose doesn't have a big role but at the same time she doesn't need to. She represents why Walter's nickname is Galahad. Walter is a gentleman who respects women as an equal. This is a relationship based on a young couple's mutual feelings of attraction. She is another piece of the puzzle that makes up Walter's forever home. That's something he's always wanted and is why he came back to Cream Valley. We have a high amount of respect for Walter because he's aware of his exploitation and isn't going to let Willy disrespect him or Rose. Naturally Willy is furious but Dolly comes to Walter's defense. After all, Walter at least has the guts to maintain his commitment to his relationship which she's obviously referencing to something Willy doesn't have.

Things get even worse for Willy as the pressure against him mounts. The Chamber of Commerce for Cream Valley and Otto's mob have differing beliefs on who should win. For the Chamber of Commerce, of course they want Walter to win. It's a middle of nowhere town nobody wants to call home, Walter winning would be a big boost to their economy. This is where the exploitation really starts. Walter's body is being sold because people are now going to Willy's camp and paying just to watch Walter train. Otto's mob is equally exploitive but in a different way. Otto had recently "adopted" Sugar Boy so they're now sponsoring him. Naturally Otto would want Sugar Boy to win and for Willy to encourage Walter to take a dive. With Willy in all of this debt to them, he doesn't have a lot of options.

Willy and Dolly's relationship is completely on the rocks. Despite the image above, Dolly is furious. The cliche breakup I mentioned earlier still doesn't exist here. It's a cliche when the drama happens out of nowhere and doesn't reflect the actual character's emotions. Dolly here has been getting frustrated with Willy since before the movie started. Despite stating exactly why she's upset numerous times before this incident, Willy somehow completely misses the point. While Dolly was upset about him gambling his money away, his lack of commitment in her eyes is much much worse.

Watching Walter and Rose get it together despite not being a couple for even a year, was the last straw. There's a difference between waiting to get married because you don't have the money for a wedding and waiting to get married because you have no desire to get married. If you're someone's fiancee for years and have heard nothing about starting any wedding plans, that's a red flag. She shouldn't be expected to wait multiple years for Willy to get it together. He's stringing her along and for all she knows he could never want to marry her. That's a horrible thing to do to someone who is committed to a potential marriage. So she finally leaves Willy and sends him to rock bottom.

The backstory behind "A Whistling Tune" is interesting. Originally it was supposed to be used for Follow That Dream. For one reason or another it was dropped and instead was used here. I'm glad that choice was made. You can argue the songs don't add anything to the movie, but I would highly disagree. The songs' meanings are SUBTLE. Watching Walter and Rose simply be together as they walk to the church is meaningful. You need scenes like this to show that this is a couple that is content with the small things. You are allowing them to exist as people and not as a means to an end because it's an Elvis film and he always gets the girl. Good writing means allowing a couple to have chemistry exist outside of "they're together because the script says so". We need to see why they should be together because otherwise they're not people and therefore un-relatable.

This couple talking with Father Higgins is just incredible. We find out that they've been together for months. So many people complain that they've only known each other for a few days. NO THAT'S NOT THE CASE! Walter's been training over the course of months because if you actually pay attention, it was 4th of July and they wanted his fight against Sugar Boy to be during the Labor Day weekend (for non-Americans that's the 1st Monday of September). They've known each other even before that, but the background is a terrible determination of how time has past. But ultimately, Father Higgins priority was that the young couple was committed to a marriage. They make a great foil to Dolly and Willy's relationship. Walter and Rose know what they want and are willing to support the other if they want something different. That's the type of beautiful, healthy relationship that I wish a lot of people have.

The pressure on Walter mounts as everyone is watching him train. Joey comes back from Boston and I love their relationship. Despite not doing that much, watching them interact gives them both depth. Joey could've easily been a throwaway character that we never see again after he left for Boston. Him coming back was a great move on the writers. It reflects how Walter is more than just a potential cash cow to the town. He's actually well respected even amongst other boxers at the camp. Dare I say these people are his family. Just watching Walter light up when he sees Joey come back is enough to say that these two are good friends.

I love the representation of different cultures. This is supposed to be New York which is the melting pot of America. Ellis Island had only been closed for less than 10 years so it makes perfect sense to have a multi-cultural community. All of the cultures represented in this movie accurately reflect the real life boxing world. Boxing was really a form of exploitation of impoverished minorities. I'll skip the history lesson, but in the US Irish immigrants were in fact considered to be a minority because of their religion. So as a way to make money they would put their bodies at risk by boxing as even with the rules in place, boxers can still get hurt and even die. It was a risk they took because they knew if they were good enough, people would sponsor them. It's a sad reality that still exists and I'm glad that the movie doesn't shy away from how exploitive it can be by Walter outright saying he wants to quit once he wins. I also appreciate how in spite of the ill will that would've very much still existed amongst older generations of immigrants, everyone gets along. Mr. Lieberman and Father Higgins do get in a back and forth regarding the top boxers in their day, but nothing comes from it. They might not agree but they get along because they both love the sport and want to support Walter.

Lew and Maynard talk about Willy's relationship with Dolly. I'm not entirely sure on what to make of Willy going to Lieberman's to try to get her back. She left in the first place because he wouldn't stop gambling and showed no commitment to getting married even after a few years. Maybe there's a part of his character that I missed, but it doesn't really make sense for him to want her back knowing he hasn't changed his mind about marriage. It's nice to see though that we have side characters being allowed to talk without Elvis even being in the room. It's moments like this that make it feel like a real movie in place of an Elvis vehicle.

Maynard leaves the room as Otto and his men come in. Since Lew is responsible for patching up Walter during a fight, they pay him $500 to not show up. Given the amount of money at stake, Otto wants to see Walter lose by being too injured to fight because he was slated to be a favorite. Despite knowing what would happen to him if he refuses, Lew outright says "No!" and rejects the money. Lew is a king for this. He knew by being in the business for so long, that saying no to a mob boss will lead to consequences but he did he anyway. He got his hands broken by some of Otto's lackeys, but to him it didn't matter. Money isn't worth Walter being in an unnecessary amount of pain to Lew. But being injured himself is worth it if it means that plan doesn't go through.

This scene had a King Creole level of tension. The whole fight scene makes you feel like someone might die. It's so incredible to see a fight scene break out and an Elvis character isn't immediately involved. Willy and Lew have a relationship that's lasted for years and we get to see that Willy has a heart. Lew isn't just an employee who didn't fall in line. Lew is his friend who very much risked his life to make sure Walter didn't get hurt anymore than necessary. Seeing him still try to fight despite the horrific injuries to his hands is incredible. It shows that even though he's badly injured, he isn't going to cower in fear.

Seeing Walter come rushing down to save Willy and Lew doesn't necessarily add anything to his character. We already know that even if Willy is treating him like a lamb being fed to wolves, Walter will still stand up for him. So why is this so important? Because it shows that Willy is finally able to swallow his pride about Walter marrying his sister. Willy sees for himself that Walter doesn't have ill will towards him. He didn't help to specifically prove himself, but because it was the right thing to do. Seeing Walter look down at a bloody Willy makes him realize that Walter is good enough. He could've been petty about their argument but he wasn't. And that's what made Willy realize he was wrong. Such a beautiful character moment that didn't have to be verbalized.

We get more development on Willy's plot and while it still doesn't justify him being so overprotective, it at least gives him some depth. It keeps him from being completely irredeemable as a person. Seeing him and the people in Walter's camp emphasize that it's not worth killing himself just to win is beautiful. I love this example of non-toxic masculinity. Walter isn't responsible for making sure people win their bets. All Walter's responsible for is doing his best. The money is nice and is a motivation for Walter, but that doesn't mean he should try to go beyond what he's capable of. It's a good lesson to teach young boys as we still sadly live in a world where men feel pressured to put everything on their shoulders.

We get to see Sugar Boy and despite his involvement with Otto I don't hate him. Sugar Boy is antagonist but he's not at all a villain. He's just as much of a victim of boxing's exploitive nature as Walter is. The sad reality is that unlike Walter, Sugar Boy not being fluent in English would make escaping it even more difficult. I can't fault Sugar Boy for taking this path as we don't even know how aware he is of Otto's plan. So when Otto's lackey shows up to try to "make Walter bleed" Willy shows his true colors by making sure it failed. He took out the saboteur and had some of Otto's men apprehended. With it being a public event, Otto would be trapped from making a scene. That's what makes Willy redeemable. When given the opportunity to do the right thing he does it.

With Walter none the wiser he walks into a surprisingly non-segregated crowd. This wasn't the only one either and given that segregated crowds were still practiced when this movie came out in some parts of the country, it's very refreshing to see. We get a name drop of Elvis' boxing trainer, Mushy Callahan who was a very famous Jewish boxer. I love how they don't parade him around for the movie yet still feel the need to honor him. The ensuing fight is intense but the fake blood here is a bit of a distraction. It doesn't completely kill the immersion though since Elvis is sweating up a storm. In fact he's so over zealous that Mushy had to drag him away from Sugar Boy after the bell rang. It was an ad-lib on Elvis' part that if anything works beautifully with how a competitive fight would be. It's so lovely to see everyone Walter has gotten to know be here to support him. You don't care about logistics of whether he should've won a fight because you understand the emotion behind him winning. When he does win, and everyone erupts into cheers and applause, it feels real. You feel that there's a connection between him and the rest of Cream Valley's residents outside of just money. They bet on him because they believed in him.

The ending goes by too fast for my liking. While Otto's lackeys get caught, we have no idea what happens to Otto himself. If they had simply shown him try to leave but get caught by the security guard, we can at least put it together that he'll be punished. Also since Sugar Boy lost, you feel bad because you have no idea what Otto might do to him if he did get away with it. Dolly coming back to Willy is strange as Willy has shown me nothing to suggest he changed his mind about marriage. I get that he did go over to Lieberman's to try to win Dolly back, but I feel like it could've been done better. Walter doesn't even get to talk to Rose. He just kisses her as we get a reprise of "I got Lucky" before fading to black. Given the run time, I think you can afford another 5 minutes if not less to wrap things up.

My criticisms can be written off as nit-picky and simply be a matter of creative differences. That's how good this movie is. If we were to rate movies independently of other movies that came out and the economic situation of Elvis fans, I have no idea how the higher ups can look at this movie's "lack of success" as a failure. I can go on forever about this, but Colonel Parker and the higher ups in Hollywood were wrong to consider this a failure when compared to Blue Hawaii. This isn't a copy and paste version of every other boxing movie out there. It isn't even a copy and paste version of the original Kid Galahad made in 1937. Are there similarities? Yes but there are enough differences that to me makes it above a generic movie.

Is this a perfect film? No but it very well could be in other people's eyes. This movie can very easily be the perfect movie and is a great example of how a movie doesn't have to be Citizen Kane or The Godfather level big to be good. It's also a great example of how a smaller level story doesn't mean shallow. Therefore, I'm giving Kid Galahad my highest rating so far of 9.5/10. I highly recommend watching this movie. It doesn't matter if you're an Elvis fan or not, it's just such a nice story. Simply saying it's a movie about an army vet becoming a boxer and finding love, doesn't do it justice. There's so much depth to even the side characters that you can feel the care put into this movie. A real treat if you want the best of both worlds when movie watching.

So, this post made me think about some conviction of mine and I wanted to know your opinions too.

For me, Elvis' voice is better in the 70s, end of story, which is not novelty for any one but naturally we have diverse opinions on the fandom, that's why I like sharing my views on it. I'm not going deep dive about the technical aspects on Elvis' voice because I'm no music teacher, vocal trainer or anything so I'll stick to my feeling as a mere fan. You may love Elvis' 50s voice better, nothing wrong about it since he rocked at all eras - no question about it - but denying his voice was way more amazing in the 70s is like saying Elvis didn't improve himself as a singer over the years which is totally untrue. Let me say it... My fav thing is hearing him singing the 50s songs in the 70s (and late 60s). On the '68 Special when he sang "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again" I was like... literally hollering at my seat (and kept listening to the song over again, each time bringing me closer to watery eyes).

Understand what I'm saying? Both versions amazing, but the 60s one it's just... flawless!

Another of the '68 special's rendition of a 50's song I love happened when Elvis said Scotty Moore asked him to perform "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"… I gotta say, the first time I heard him singing this second song was the '68 version but a few days ago I played the 50s version and… not even close to impress me as much. Although is fairly good, it doesn't hold a candle for Elvis' voice in the late 60' and all the live 70s versions of it.

Anyway... Elvis' from the late 60's on voice is the most! I mean, listening to the 50s version of "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" don't you miss the Sweet Inspirations singing "Bye bye, baby" and "Won't be coming no more..." on the background? The 1972 "Elvis On Tour" version is the best one EVER! And that's what I mean… Elvis kept improving himself as a singer year after year! It doesn't matter how sometimes his sicknesses affected his vocals during the late 70s, because that's very understandable (even tho is a shame) and even when his voice was a weaker (in an Elvis to himself comparison scale), his voice through the 70s is better than his 50s voice alright anyways. C'mon! That's true! By the way, for me, Elvis singing with a sore throat sounds better than 95% of other performers (and the 5% that could possibly outshine him around the time his voice was weak are the 50s-70s ones - his own fellow music performers. Not even one of the today's artist could come close to what Elvis' voice was, even when he sounds a little weak during some late 70s live performances, much less at his voice's best powerful and full vitality moments). That's my opinion.

Anyway... sometimes I wonder: Was Elvis really "the King" in the 50s? I'm not talking about his numbers, the amount of fans, money or fame here, guys. I don't either wanna sound like I'm belittling Elvis' amazing, not ever seen before or after, tremendously impressive successful career. He totally earned being dubbed "The King of Rock Roll" in the 50s considering he's done what no one had ever done before and was really successful at it. We can say he was "the King of Hearts" since the 50's but in music... Okay, all his bold wild dance moves live onstage and his big charisma did it for him to earn the title "the King" too, but even so his voice was great and unique, it wasn't perfect... just yet. I think of him being crowned "the King" in the 50's somehow as "being a promise to be fulfilled" — and it was. During his career he was year after year getting better and better as a singer and performer, showing everyone he indeed was "the King", in spite he was doing movies or recording albums, Elvis never ceased to keep the world's eyes on him and he did it so effortlessly. Even tho he worked his ass off, his charm and talent was natural as day light. Elvis Presley definitely wasn't a regular performer and maybe that's why he was crowned as "the King of Rock and Roll" so early in his career but to me, the moment he absolutely triumphed and proved nobody could ever hold a candle to him was from the late 60's on.

The Elvis we see from late 60s on, performing soulfully onstage is undeniably "THE KING".

The question was posed to the Vice Discord "what kind of Pokemon would Sonny have," and as it turns out, that was my sleeper phrase, and now I've been activated.

Sonny Crockett doesn't consider himself a Pokemon trainer, but the Pokemon of the Floriami region don't seem to agree with him on that. Regardless, it would be a stretch to argue that any of his Pokemon are "trained," and in the traditional sense, has not caught a single one of them.

His partner Pokemon is Krookodile, whose criminal reputation helps him keep his cover. In reality, Sonny rescued it from an unhappy life as a sports team mascot when it was a Sandile-- other than the unfortunate habit of smoking it picked up from its owner, it's a real softy. (…it's Elvis.)

Sonny and Flamigo-- who provides both surveillance and defense-- began as enemies. Flamigo used to kick holes in the St. Vitus' sails before Sonny helped it defend its extended Flamigo family from poachers, after which it refused to leave Sonny's side. Sonny will not admit that he and Flamigo have exactly the same temperament. (Sonny is NBC's prettiest peacock, after all.)

Both Sandygast and Corsola crawled onto the St. Vitus one day and never left. Corsola helps with underwater repairs as well as tailing other boats, but would prefer to sunbathe. Sandygast enjoys lurking and consuming souls. (A sandcastle that eats souls seems like exactly the right friend for a cop in Miami. So many souls to eat. And I picked Corsola partially because under the wrong circumstances, it can become a doomed Cursola, and like. That's Sonny.)

Varoom used to race Sonny down the highway; when it learned what happened to the Daytona, it demanded Sonny catch it so it could protect the Testarossa from coming to similar harm. Sonny often finds it sleeping in the trunk. (I couldn't not give him the engine Pokemon)

Honedge followed Sonny home one night not long after he met Tubbs. Sonny chooses not to think too deeply on this. (Honedge represents his white knight tendencies. Also it's Pokedex entry mentions it being possessed by the soul of a previous owner… wonder who…)

This pre production stuff is true, their job doesn't just start when they say action, i like Robert Pattinson too so i follow his career, he's filming "Die, My Love" with Jennifer Lawrence in Canada and the shooting started on August 19th and he traveled to Canada on August 12th a week before they start filming.

yeah and i esp assume he had/has pre-filming shit to do when he's the main lead. i haven't read caught stealing yet (i know! i need to! i am but a simple law student who doesn't have a ton of time to read for fun) but i know from the bits and pieces i've seen there's a good deal of fight scenes. assuming he's not using a stunt double for everythingggg one of the biggest pre pro things for him might be fight/movement training and rehearsing for that type of thing.

i think my favorite random pre production related thing i've ever heard is that baz and the elvis team had olivia dejonge doing karate training??? which makes me laugh bc yeah priscilla did karate but. they did not put that in elvis 2022 at all lmfao they made her bust her ass in the dojo learning karate for what!!! #justiceforolivia. i love the photos of her and austin with the set personal trainer where you can see she has her priscilla nails on haha. just girly things!

Dedenne [Literally such a them pokemon there's no way around it. This thing looks almost exactly like how I see Ferris in my mind's eye and I think they know it too. It's also probably their starter back when they thought they were gonna battle for real, only to find out that Oh This Is Hard and You Don't Evolve ... Let's not do this then !]

Togepi -> Togetic [I like to think Ferris would feed stray pokemon whenever they can, and sometimes it results in them getting pokemon to stay with them even though it's not the intention. Togepi was that exact case <3 it's very lucky that it's adorable because Ferris didn't have the heart to release it anymore.]

Whimsicott [Likely the ace of their team, becuase even though Whimsicott isn't a super strong pokemon, when utilized properly in a strategy Ferris manages to make it at least feel invincible. Fluffy lil' fellow <3 fits with their aesthetic too]

– HARVEY (*better known as just KELLER) [Electric, but in the sense that he doesn't actually have pokemon just because and is forced by the company to have a team. Guy who doesn't wanna participate in your fucking gym core. All his pokemon are given to him as property of Maliwan, so at least he's not mistreating them]

Rotom [Given as an initiation mon for everyone in the company. Surprisingly affectionate with Keller despite him heing The Worst and never reciprocating it, but alas, it does not know that.]

Electrode [Much of the same idea as the first one, but even more so. Again, Keller isn't super interested in pokemon as a whole and would rather have None, but since he's being forced to, he opted for the ball with a face on it because he figured it wouldn't be too much work to care for. And it isn't !]

– Toshiro (*better known as YONNE) [Fire/Electric. Used to be a trainer before he joined the company, but then got a projectile to the knee and was forced to retire. Sad !]

Rotom [Again, initiation pokemon for company, but Yonne actually does like his. When they aren't being constantly watched by other investors and what have you, I like to think he gives his tons of pampering.]

Ninetales [His ex-ace that he no longer can use due to mostly working in an office space and it being a fire type, but that he still cherishes even if it reminds him of better days. Definetly his starter pokemon too, probably given to him by his parents.]

Elekid -> Electavire [Technically wasn't supposed to be his, because all he was supposed to do was hold onto it and train it for the company, but then it evolved and got way too attached, so now it is. Kind of scared of it because of how big it's gotten since it was a baby, but hey, it's still his baby.]

– THALIA [Ground/Electric, still a trainer in her spare time, but really mostly forced to be stationary in the company floor.]

Manetric [Her initiation pokemon and her second favorite ever. She was already an electric type enjoyer even before she joined the company, so her appreciation for them grew even further when she got it as a thank you gift from the higher ups. That's her pet dogy <3]

Mudsdale [Her actual starter, and also her actual favorite pokemon ever. Has been with her since she was a kid and is a very old thing, but nevertheless very sturdy that has always been by her side. I like to think instead of going to work in normal ways she just rides a horse there. For funsies.]

Rotom [She doesn't really feel anything towards it try as she might. It's just another tool for work. And it's very sad about as well]

Hippowdon [Has been with her since she started her journey and she adores this fucking thing even though it is insanely powerful and can crush a car like a soda can. It is no longer allowed near office for doing exactly that.]

Roderick Strong Primer Part II: But Who IS He, Tho?

Roderick Strong is the super cool wrestling OC donut steal of one Christopher Lindsey, born on July 26, 1983 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. However, his family moved to Tampa soon after, which probably epigenetically contributed to him turning out a pretty good example of a Florida Man—or, at least, a Man from Florida. His mother is a paralegal, while his father is a self-taught musician who became/maybe still is an Elvis impersonator (yes, that’s why there was a picture of him as a child dressed in a sparkly jumpsuit on stage during that recent Collision promo); sibling-wise, he has one that we know of, a half-sister who is older than him by four years.

His childhood was…less than perfect. According to him, both in wrestling company-produced backstory blurbs and videos and interviews where he’s just shooting the shit with his buddies, he’d be left alone for hours at a time to basically babysit himself while his age was still in the single digits. His father had problems with alcohol, and would often come home from the bars he performed at around 4 or 5 in the morning; his mother had issues with harder drugs. Said parents would apparently get into screaming matches a lot. He had few friends and was picked on, in part because the family kept moving around Florida and in part because he was an awkward fat kid (to the point that in first grade he learned to pick his nose until it bled, something I didn’t even know you could do, so that he could go home early rather than deal with the fact no one wanted to talk to him at school). He liked math and he played a lot of sports, but because of a particular character trait of his that I will discuss from a kayfabe perspective in part 3 he still struggled to find a place for himself.

Then, of course, there was the incident that was both probably pretty traumatic and, if it didn’t happen, would have maybe meant that he would have never wrestled in the first place: when he was ten or eleven or twelve years old, his mom shot his dad near-fatally. The latter had to go to the hospital; the former spent some time in jail. After his father recovered, for a period of time he had to raise his son as a single parent.

Completely unrelatedly, said dad—who Roderick describes as both athletic and not at the same time—at one point got an invitation to learn how to wrestle under a “former WWE star” (which, especially in the 90s, everyone who ever jobbed on a single show billed themselves as). He agreed—but what to do about his kid while he trained? If they couldn’t afford to get someone to look after him before the incident, they probably still couldn’t on a single person’s salary.

His solution was, of course, to just bring his son with him. He’s not been totally consistent with how he described his initial reaction to tagging along: in 2015 he said he was a big wrestling fan and loved it; in 2023, during his appearance on AEW Unrestricted, he said he liked it beforehand but was a lapsed fan by the time his dad started learning how to wrestle. Either way, for the first month or so he just sat on the grass and watched sweaty, shirtless adults being put through their paces by their trainer—who, it turns out, was an actual former WWE star in Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart.

It was also Anvil who, despite only actively supervising for four or so months, catalyzed Roderick wanting to do wrestling, too. The story goes like this: after a month, he invited Roddy (who was 12 or 13 at the time) to get into the ring. According to the latter, all he did was “mess around a bit” on the top rope; as they were driving home, however, his dad mentioned that Anvil had told him his kid had potential, and that if he kept at it he might be somebody in pro wrestling. Whether or not the guy meant what he said, this was apparently the first time Roderick had been told by anyone who weren’t his parents that he was good at something, and from that point he began training in earnest.

His life was progressing in other ways, too. He was a two-way American football player at his high school, and ended up netting an academic scholarship to the University of South Florida, where he studied business for two years before dropping out.

Going back to wrestling, though, he ended up debuting at something like 14 or 15 and was already getting somewhere in-ring wise. For example, the former WWE wrestler Victoria’s finisher, the Widow’s Peak, is a move Molly Holly (who he’s friends with thanks to the Tampa wrestling circuit connection, by the way) apparently saw Roddy do at 14 in a backyard wrestling ring and recommended to Victoria for her to use. He also helped train, while he was still a teenager, his kayfabe brother and former tag team partner Sedrick Strong—who, if you’re wondering, came up with his ring name first, and was so set on it that, being billed as brothers and all, Roderick Strong had to be named Roderick Strong.

It’s hard to believe now, but initially Sedrick, who ended up retiring from prowres and becoming the branch manager of Tampa Toyota at one point, was the more successful one, participating in the pretty prestigious ECWA Super 8 tournament in 2003. Because of the same character trait I alluded to earlier, Roderick almost quit wrestling entirely in response. Fortunately for me and the 12 other Roddy marks active on the internet, he soon got an offer from Ring of Honor (for those doing the math, he was 19 at the time), ending up in the promotion around the same time as some really famous guys from there were active: Danielson, Punk, Joe…

ROH remained his home promotion for nearly 15 years, and while there, among other accolades, he became their second Triple Crown champion (the first was Eddie Edwards, his partner in the tag team the Dojo Bros). He also, at least in-ring, really got to know his future Undisputed Era stablemates in Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole. Roddy worked a lot of places, though, both on the indies and not: in the latter category, he went to Japan to wrestle for places like NOAH (and met Bobby Fish, another UE member, in the back of those tour buses), did TNA, and even had a one-off appearance on WWE Smackdown against Kurt Angle.

One of the independent promotions he worked, meanwhile, was (of course) California’s Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. He had matches there for over 11 years, from 2005 to, as described in the first part of this primer, his five minute championship rematch against ZSJ in 2016 (which also happened to be the event celebrating the promotion’s 13 year anniversary). I haven’t watched a lot of them pre-2014, but the ones I have? Bangers—but I don’t expect anything less from a Roderick Strong match, if I’m being honest.

But pro wrestling is, as much I hate to admit it, about more than technical greatness (though as I will try to touch on in parts 3 and 4, Roddy has been really great at the non-verbal parts of wrestling in general for years, including expressing and eliciting emotion in-ring). One of the most common criticisms lobbied at Roderick Strong until maybe a few months ago was that he had nothing beyond his technique. During his time as PWG heel champ, though, I am of the opinion that he proved those criticisms outdated—though admittedly it took him several years to get there.

In 2013 and before that, he was mostly a goofy face; in 2014, after he beat Adam Cole for the PWG #1 contendership at PWG ELEVEN, he turned heel on that same show by attacking Kyle O'Reilly post-title defense. It was only after losing his own title match to Kyle, though, then winning the championship one show later anyway thanks to goading a Kyle who’d literally just beaten Ricochet into a brutal 20+ minute Guerrilla Warfare match (at an event called, funnily enough, Black Cole Sun; these guys are all connected man LOL), that his heel turn was truly cemented. Armed with his stiff style, letterman jacket, End of Heartache as his entrance music, and his shitty little boots—which, by the way, originated from Trent? making him a t-shirt design with that phrase on it—he proceeded to terrorize the fans via being a massive prick and fight against a laundry list of some really good wrestlers:

Then ZSJ finally beat him for the title in a great bout and he left indie wrestling for WWE soon after. You know the drill. So, if you’re wondering why I and the previously mentioned 12 Roddy marks freaked out when he came back during PWG’s Mystery Vortex 8—which was also the 20th anniversary of the promotion’s founding!—hopefully this explains why a little. He just feels right in a PWG ring.

But the fact of the matter is he couldn’t come back for nearly seven years, whether to PWG or ROH or the many places all around the world he’s wrestled in. As I’ve mentioned, I didn’t watch NXT at that point, so I’ll let someone else explain that time in his career if ever; I also am making the assumption that if you’re reading this you’re aware of his current AEW run, so I’m not gonna recap that history either. He’s existed for 40 years and been wrestling for well over 20 of them, man, I don’t think I could get to everything he’s done even if I wanted to.

So: a basic history established. You might be wondering, though: throughout his long career…what was he like? As a North American wrestler who wrestles in the North American context, does he have that essential component of pro wrestling? Did he have a character?

The popular answer until recently? No. In part 3, though, I will hopefully provide some evidence that, at least by the time I first watched him, the answer was yes.

“Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” Stephen Sanchez Record Shop Co-worker AU Fluff!

Y/N started at the record shop six months ago today. Of course no one would remember not even her favorite owner Billy would remember. He didn't remember much these days, but this wouldn't even cross his mind.

Six months isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things, but to Y/N six months was more than just a measure of time. Six months meant everything. Because that's when she met, Stephen.

She gazed around the poster plastered walls, neon signs and pop-star cut outs scattered the space. It felt like home, despite the flicker of yellow-ish tube lights.

The melancholic sound of Carole King's song "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" played in the background, it felt like a memory both future and distant. It was a kind of song to dig up emotions that you couldn't quite understand yet. But no matter what, it still made her think of, him.

Y/N tapped her fingers along the  paint chipped countertop and found herself wandering through memories.

She just kinda tumbled onto the Jazz Table Record Shop one day, pulled in from perhaps boredom, but she stayed because of him. She wasn't familiar with old or cool music, she didn't have a artisy or snobby taste in music from vintage bands, she didn't know who Blondie or the Misfits were, she didn't know that Elvis Presley made more than one song, she didn't know that Phil Collin's was the drummer for Genesis, she didn't know that they both had amazing music.  But she learned all of this because of him.

He had drawn her in with those attentive and dreamy dark eyes. She hadn't seen eyes like those before. Whatever he talked about, she wanted to know about.

She pretended to keep up, that she knew all the references all the songs and musicians.

Maybe he decided to keep up the conversation because there was no one else in the slightly chilly shop, maybe he thought she was cute, maybe, maybe, maybe.

Still to this day she doesn't understand Stephen. But one day she'd like to.

"Hey, I think you should totally apply here, we are kinda under staffed at the moment and we could use some more people like you"  He seemed sincere when he passed a paper application across the countertop. 

Of course she filled it out and returned the next day. Only to be disappointed that Stephen wasn't there, but one of the owners named Billy, welcomed her and almost immediately hired her. The pay wasn't amazing, the hours were weird, but you got to get a killer discount and they treated everyone like family, and they believed in mental health days.

So six months ago today, she started a bit nervous, but a little excited when she saw that Stephen would be her trainer. She definitely didn't buy an Eagles shirt from Walmart as a conversation starter. 

Today Stephen started at 2pm, and it was currently 2:05pm. She focused on the vintage Tom & Jerry clock, hoping it was a bit off.  He usually wasn't late....

He's fine! Hahaaaaaaa stop it.

It was at 2:11pm the clatter of the front door bell sounded and Y/N quickly looked up from her phone.

Stephen rushed in iced coffee and tote bag in hand.

He looked out of breath as he doubled over, painting and slightly sweaty. He put a hand up "Sorry for being late! I lost track of time" he laughed.

Butterflies erupted in Y/N,  God that smile, that laugh.

"It's all good, nothing really happened you just missed one of Carole King's best songs" she smirked.

He rounded the counter and dumped his stuff on the wobbly stool. 

As he caught his breath he said  "'So Far Away'?"  Y/N laughed  "No?"

He made a quizzical face "What was that tone for?"

She rolled her eyes  "Tapestry by far is her best album but, 'So Far Away' isn't the best song on there, and it's definitely not her best song."

"Pssshhhh," he swatted the air and grabbed a stack of cds and started to sort them out.  "How is that not her best song? It's about nostalgia and loneliness, but there's also something comforting about it." 

Y/N joined him, she forgot she had to label all the cds that a metal head sold earlier, the guy was clearly going through it, she thought he was crazy for selling all these vintage metal albums for this cheep. 

He pulled a cd up to inspect it "Ooh, Screeching Weasel" "Said no one ever." She muttered. At that they both laughed.

"Okay so since you're the expert, what is Carole King's best song?"

Without a moment of hesitation she blurted  "'Will You Love Me Tomorrow?'".

They were in a suspended silence. Their faces mere in inches apart. She felt a blush creep up her face. Even though it was the title of the song, it felt more like a confession.

Stephen was the first to break the silence, "Well technically that song was for the Shirelles first. So why do you think it's her best song?"

Y/N cleared her throat, "Uhm- well Carole wrote it after she gave birth to her child and she was in a vulnerable position, wondering if the love she felt was genuine and reciprocated. I think it really highlights what young and uncertain love feels like."

At that he tilts his head as he continues to go through the stack of cds.

"But the Shirelles killed that performance, they deserved so much than what they got."

Y/N smiled but also deep down felt a little embarrassed, he wasn't continuing the conversation the way she was hoping he would. 

"Hey, I'm going to go reorganize the t-shirt rack." She quickly exited behind the counter and walked away. 

For the next agonizing 30 minutes, they worked in complete silence. She wished that a customer would walk in and break the tension, or that he would say anything. 

She just needed something, anything to happen.

It was humid and sticky inside the small shop, and her nervousness didn't help with her internal temperature. 

She decided to prop the door open with a brick.  It was a glorified brick really, Billy had painted a Hawaiian shirt on it and gave it googly eyes, his name was Rick the Brick. One time some lowlife stole Rick, and Billy called the cops, from that day on no one messed with Rick. He wasn't just a brick or a door prop, he was the epitome and the embodiment of the spirit of Jazz Table Records.

Finally thinking of an ice breaker she spoke "Do you think we should make a buddy for Ricky?"

Stephen looked up "Like a friend for him?" 

Y/N struggled and walked over to the counter. She leaned against it "It's proper time he isn't as lonely, I can't imagine being alone for 20 years. He needs a friend."  Stephen smiles a slow honey and molasses smile that sends a shiver through Y/N. 

"I couldn't imagine either"

They both laugh

"I still can't believe you've never dated anyone" Y/N laughs harder.

At that Stephen flushes,

"Well it's not like I couldn't get anyone, it's just I haven't ever wanted anyone" he shrugs it off. She stops laughing, she can tell that she took it a bit far. 

"That's not a bad thing. I understand what you mean"

He works on something on the work computer.

"Finding love these days isn't easy, no one is honest anymore, not with their partners, not with themselves. It's scary. You can never really find out anything about anyone. It's so strange."

Y/N watched him type and focus, the glow of the computer highlighting his handsome and dark features. 

" I get it, we live in a weird time honestly. I feel like people aren't authentic. We change ourselves so often, we don't even know who we are." She bites her cracked lips. 

"I can't stand when people change themselves to fit into a new mold so they will be liked by someone." His words cut through him. 

She never felt more exposed.  She changed parts of herself for him. She started dressing differently, listening to new music, ordering coffee with oat milk even though she didn't like the taste that much. She did a lot, just so they'd have things in common. She felt stupid now.

He couldn't have said it to slight her... right?

He couldn't have known that she changed so much about herself.

In a moment of courage she said "Sometimes we are desperate enough for the love of someone we adjust things about ourselves to fit their ideals. Sometimes we don't even realize it."

His eyes move to met hers.

She didn't have much to lose.

Actually that was a lie, she'd lose everything if she lost him.  But she was still ready to take a risk.

"I changed a lot about myself."

He watches as she fidgets

"I've changed a lot about myself to be loved by someone I've loved so deeply that I didn't care if I lost myself in the process because I knew I'd be a better person if they loved me." 

Her gaze flits up to his.

"And I truly hope that I'll never regret it because I am so in love with him, I'd risk it all."

He swallows slowly and looks down.

"Love is scary, if you're not careful it's a dangerous sea to drown in."

"I'd gladly drown if it meant I had a moment to be loved." She confessed.

"Are you saying what I think you are saying?" He asked in a hard to understand way.

"I'm saying that I love you Stephen." She blurted all at once. And after a moment of silence and tension she continued 

"I've loved you from the time I walked in here six months ago. I'm so privileged to have known and loved you for the for the time that I have."

"And if I lose you now because of this, I'm glad I was able to confess to you, it was all worth it. To spend a moment in your light."

Stephen was quiet. But he wasn’t silent. She watched him intensely. He rolled his linen button-up to his elbow, small tattoos revealed, she memorized all of them, so much to the point that when she was bored she'd trace them on scrap paper. 

She knew and loved so much about him. But she wanted more. Just knowing and loving from an unrequited distance wasn't enough. She wanted to be the first thing he woke up to, she wanted to be the one who'd steal his favorite clothes, the one he'd buy flowers for. She wanted it all. 

Was it all too much to ask for?

"Y/N" he said in almost a whisper.

He takes a second to breathe.

"I've loved you from the second you walked through those doors."

Adrenaline rushed through her veins and she felt euphoric.

"But I've never loved you more than I have in this moment."

He was sincere, she saw it in his dark eyes.  She saw it in every inch of body. 

She knew he was telling the truth.

"Y/N." He paused once more

"I've loved you for six months, I've loved you today, I will love you tomorrow and I will love you forever."

Spooky Mulder's UFO Club (5)

After losing a bet, Scully is forced to join Spooky Mulder’s UFO Club. (actually it’s called The Study of Unexplained Phenomena Project, and it’s a class not a club, but whatever) Ridiculed throughout the school by students and staff alike, Scully wants to get it over with as soon as she can and come “back down to earth” when a class trip up to Alaska, to do their own investigations into the mysterious deaths of four hikers, finds them stranded with an unknown virus wreaking havoc and a woods that becomes its own entity at night, Scully realises this dumb little class packs a lot more horror than she bargained for.

It'll be some time before the next chapter is posted, I want to write a couple more before then. For the time being, enjoy what is probably my favourite chapter so far.

Chapter Five: Can't Help Falling In Love.

With a row all to himself on the plane, Mulder chucks his carryon bag onto the floor, splays out across the seats with his feet up, headphones on, content to just chill out for the next eight hours.

At first, nothing else really exists around him. There’s some general chattering around him that he catches just under the blare of his music, Harrison exclaiming to Reyes, and everyone else nearby, how she’s never been on a plane before and the woman behind him bitching about a co-worker to her flying partner. Everything else is just white noise as he battles a Ratatta on his Gameboy. Throwing a Pokeball at it gives him a moment to look around and his eyes land on Scully in the seat opposite him; stiff as a board, hands clutching tightly around the armrests, her eyes closed as she seems to be making an effort to slowly breath in and out. Concerned, he places his Gameboy on the tray table and tugs off his headphones. A glance at Ethan tells Mulder that the other boy was seemingly asleep, sagged against the window, eyes shut. He leans over gently patting Scully’s arm.

“You good?” Mulder asks when Scully reopens her own eyes.

“Fine,” she answers curtly. Mulder cocks his head to the side. Scully glances around, making sure nobody is in earshot as she leans in closer. “Okay, don’t tell anyone but I am terrified of flying.”

Mulder smiles sympathetically.

“You’re laughing at me…” Scully says with a pout.

“I’m not, really,” assures Mulder. He takes another look at Ethan. “Is he really asleep?”

Scully looks herself. “I think so.”

Mulder shuffles back over to his seat. “Come here, before we take off.”

Hastily unbuckling her seatbelt, Scully moves herself and her bag into the seat next to Mulder. As she refastens the seatbelt, he grabs his Gameboy off the tray and angles it so they can both see it.

“You know what this is right?” Mulder asks.

His questions earns him a punch in the arm and a look.

“Yes, I know what a Gameboy is. My younger brother has one.”

“Right.” The Ratatta caught, Mulder continues on with his task through a forest.

“What are you playing?” Scully asks.

“Pokemon,” Mulder answers with a smile.

The plane rumbles to life, getting ready to speed down the runway. Mulder keeps Scully’s attention on the game.

“You know how to play, right?”

Scully shakes her head.

“You go round battling and collecting these creatures called Pokemon. Some are based on our animals, some completely made up. You’re a trainer and you battle other trainers to win money so you can buy things like healing potions and powerups.”

The plane begins to gather speed as it ploughs down the runway, the momentum forcing them back. Scully’s attention is taken away from the game as the plane begins to lift up, she gasps, grasping the armrests and clinging on for dear life as her body grows tense.

“Hey,” Mulder says tapping her thigh and bringing her attention back to him. “It’s okay.” He takes his headphones and slips them over her head. He presses play on his Walkman and hears the faint tune of Elvis’ voice as he sings I Can’t Help Falling In Love. Scully smiles, more at ease as the plane starts to even out, and Mulder smiles back, happy his efforts have worked. The game still positioned so the two of them can see, he wanders about the forest collecting and battling as Scully watches on, asking questions. An hour into the flight, he passes the Gameboy to Scully, giving her a turn. She makes two Pokemons she attempted to catch faint and loses all the battles but she’s enjoying herself, that’s all that matters. They share snacks, listen to his War of the World’s tape as they eat dinner, and Mulder winds her up with some bizarre theory as he intended to. All in all, it’s a great flight, one made even better when, halfway through, Scully falls asleep, her head falling onto his shoulder. Mulder stares, awestruck for what feels like a long time before a huge smile whips across his face. He slips his headphones on, turning out towards the window, I Can’t Help Falling In Love playing into his ears.

Mulder blinks a couple of times, coming to. His eyes take a moment to adjust to the bright light coming through the window. He runs a hand over his face, jostling something next to him.

Scully. She makes a disturbed noise, shifting in her sleep in her seat, her head still against his shoulder as she gets comfortable once more.

The plane steadily drops down and Mulder looks out to see the small specs of civilisation below him.

“We’ll be landing soon,” Skinner says as he makes his way past Mulder’s seat. Mulder nods and turns to Scully, gently tapping her awake.

“Hey Scully,” he whispers. She makes a sound, awakening. “Skin-Man says we’re landing soon.”

“Uh-hmm…”

Mulder smiles. “That means you gotta awake up.”

Her eyes open, big and blue and still glazed over with sleep. She looks beautiful and Mulder looks away before he does something he’ll regret.

“Where are my glasses?” Scully asks, frowning and sitting up. She stretches as Mulder reaches forward into the basket where he’d tucked her glasses safely away earlier and hands them to her.

She takes them, thanking him, and puts them on.

“Can you see much without them?” he asks.

She nods. “But I get headaches if I don’t wear them so…” She shrugs.

It’s Mulder’s turn to nod. “I’m supposed to wear reading glasses but I don’t.” He looks away like she’s going to berate him. She doesn’t. Instead she just smiles.

“And that’s why you get headaches,” she says tapping his nose.

“Wake up, Minette,” says Skinner, not so gently tapping the boy on the arm. “We’re landing.”

Ethan startles awake, wiping the sleep away from his face and sitting up. He looks to the side of him, to where Scully should be sitting. Instead, his eyes catch to where she actually sits, next to Mulder and while Ethan can’t see her expression with her back to him, he can definitely see Mulder’s- grinning ear to ear like it’s his fucking birthday. Ethan leans back, watching them through veiled anger, seething at the sight.

“All passengers to fasten their seatbelt as we prepare for landing,” the pilot’s voice rings through the speakers.

Mulder fastens his seatbelt and looks to Scully, her expression one of anxiety again.

“You good, Scully?” he asks.

“Could I listen to your music again?”

“Of course.” As he’d done during take-off, he slips the headphones over her head again. The plane jostles slightly as it moves down. He feels her hand slip into his. Mulder looks down, seeing their hands and gives hers a reassuring squeeze as the plane fully begins its descent downwards.

Elvis Presley in "Kid Galahad" (1962) 🥊💥

Directed by Phil Karlson and released by United Artists in August 1962. The movie opened at #9 at the American box office. Variety ranked it #37 on its list of the top-grossing films of 1962. "Kid Galahad" with Elvis Presley is a remake of the 1937 version starring Edward G. Robinson, Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart and directed by Michael Curtiz, who also directed the 1958 Presley film "King Creole" released in 1958. Its actually said that Elvis prefered Mr. Curtiz had directed "Kid Galahad" instead of the actual director, just because he thought Michael was a perfect fit for this production.

#PLOT

Willy Grogan (Gig Young) is a small-time boxing promoter and innkeeper based in the Catskills resort region of Cream Valley, New York. He is a contemptible man who is in debt and pays little attention to the woman who loves him, Dolly (Lola Albright), a chain-smoking, love-starved woman residing at the camp. Walter Gulick (Elvis Presley) arrives, a young man recently discharged from the army (they based Elvis' character on his real life pretty frequently on the scripts. Elvis had been discharged from the army a year before, in March 1960. This wasn't the first of his characters to be a former soldier tho) who loves the peaceful setting almost as much as he loves working on old cars. Walter wishes to find work as a mechanic at a nearby garage.

[Sub-plot/romance] When Willy's younger sister Rose (Joan Blackman) shows up unexpectedly, she becomes interested in Walter. Willy objects because he doesn't want Rose to fall for a "grease monkey" mechanic and two-bit boxer. Dolly is envious of the young couple's romance and resents Willy's interference.

Walter, in need of work, accepts a job as a sparring partner and knocks out one of Willy's top fighters. Even tho Walter is not a professional boxer, Willy, afraid of his debts expiring, convinces Walter, dubbed as "Kid Galahad" for him, to try his hand in a real bout. Both men are reluctant but need money. Walter begins training under the watchful eye of Lew Nyack, Willy's top trainer (Charles Bronson).

Some fights here and there, and then there's the biggest fight, the ultimate challenge. Will Walter win the competition even being an amateur boxing fighter?

Professional boxing coach "Mushy" Callahan trained Elvis for the fight scenes. He is credited as "Technical Advisor" for this movie. Above we see Elvis Presley practicing with Mushy Callahan on the set of Kid Galahad, 1961.

Kid Galahad was shot on location in Idyllwild, California and onset in Hollywood, CA.

Shooting began in early November 1961 at Hidden Lodge, Idyllwild, California, before a storm forced a move to Hollywood.

Elvis shows what he looks like after he gets slammed. I believe they intentionally opted for "smoothing" the makeup bruises big time, since it's a pretty shocking image seeing Elvis like in the last two pictures, specially. Like, wtf?! It really shocked me seeing this picture. Now imagine this beaten up Elvis in motion on the big screen for thousands of teenagers to see. It looks straight out from a horror picture, doesn't it? Great talented makeup artist tho!

"Kid Galahad" (EP) released on August, 1962.

Six songs were recorded for the film and the soundtrack was issued as an extended play record in August 1962 to coincide with the film's premiere. Recorded on October, 1962, at Radio Recorders (Hollywood), the EP "Kid Galahad" was released in August 28, 1962.

The tracks featured on this EP were: "King of the Whole Wide World", "This Is Living", "Riding the Rainbow", "Home Is Where the Heart Is", "I Got Lucky" and "A Whistling Tune" — As the plots for Presley films became interchangeable, songs rejected for a certain storyline could later be used for an entirely different film, as with "A Whistling Tune" which had been omitted from Presley's previous film "Follow That Dream" (1962) but found a place here instead.

The featured song from the album, "King of the Whole Wide World", received Top 40 radio airplay and reached No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

RECEPTION

"Kid Galahad" didn't have a warm reception among critics.

Variety's note was: "The story may be old, the direction not especially perceptive, the performances in several cases pretty poor, but United Artists' 'Kid Galahad' is apt to be a moneymaker in spite of all this." Another critics report, John L. Scott in the Los Angeles Times called the story "old hat" but thought that it "should more than satisfy the horde of Presley fans."
