A Ridiculous Analogy of a Slightly Irritating Metaphor - by Ellie Dudgeon
Ok so a few days ago I saw a comment somewhere, I can’t even remember where, saying that recently suits has gone a bit ‘off the rails’ and I personally disagreed with this statement but that is not what this is about because I then got to thinking about that metaphor and realised that, especially in the context of a tv show, it doesn’t make sense. so I decided to analyse it (this happened at about midnight one night - I wasn't getting any sleep).
So in order to analyse this metaphor let’s go into its meaning. Let’s say a train was going along some train tracks (or rails) constantly at a steady pace. A certain distance ahead, however, the engineers are also going along at a steady pace, building those very rails that the train goes along. If the engineers decide that the rails are going to bend around to the left or right or even possibly change direction all together, then they can build them that way because they have that control.
By the time the train has travelled a certain distance, they will have been many curves and bends away from the straight line through the landscape that the passengers may have imagined originally. It doesn’t really matter why it’s changed, but just that it has and that it would never have gone in a straight line because of the choices of the engineers. As long as the train keeps travelling along the tracks being built then it will not go off the rails wherever those rails go because those rails were never predetermined. There was never a guarantee made to the passengers as to where the train would end up going.
When the train first set off, the passengers that decided to go along for the ride, did so with their own free will and they did so knowing that they couldn't possibly know the final destination at this point. Therefore by getting on the train, they willingly signed away their right to ever know where the train is headed for or question the engineers as to why it went to this location.
Anyway, in relation to a tv show, lets say Suits, what I am saying is that the engineers are Aaron Korsh and his team of writers and creators. The train drivers and staff are the cast of the show and the passengers are the people who decide to sit down and watch the show. Therefore it doesn’t make sense to say that a show is going ‘off the rails’ because the rails were never PREDESTINED but are instead laid out with every decision that the creators make. What I’m not saying is that fans of a show should always blindly just accept what happens in a show, I’m just saying that, just because the train may not have made a stop at your desired location or it has whizzed past places you would like to see, that doesn’t mean it is wrong in any way or that you have the right to demand that it should stop because you never had that right - you signed it willingly away as soon as you started watching the show (remember).
Fans are merely passengers along for an awesome ride that will go in ways you could never imagined it going when you where first introduced to the characters in the pilot. But hey, if you really don’t like where the train has gone or where it looks like it may be heading then get off whenever you like at any of the stops by just stopping to watch the show.
Anyway, yeah, I think its a stupid metaphor.
The end.
