I wanna talk about Elliot Tiber's memior Taking Woodstock. Tiber is a gay Jewish man who's parents owned the motel Woodstock was run from up in the Catskills. This is of course why I was first interested in the story.

But anyone who knows a lot about Woodstock, and particularly someone who's got a special intrest in the counterculture movement of the 60s, can tell something is off. As it turns out other people who were also there say Tiber streched his importance and other key peices of the story.

What has always stuck with me is that he claimed to have had sex with Robert Mapplethorpe. I am not saying that didn't happen Mapplethorpe had a lot of sex with a lot of people but I'm just now realizing the chronology is all wrong. He is suggesting that prior to June 1969 he met Mapplethorpe at the Mineshaft, Mapplethorpe had nazi paraphernalia in his loft, AND there were SM photographs that Mapplethorpe had taken. In the morning Mapplethorpe makes Tiber dress up like a nazi and takes pictures of him. a couple years later there were censorship battles and later Tiber sees Mapplethorpe in a gallery.

the first problem is that The Mineshaft didn't open till the 70s, 74 or 75 I can't remeber but it was not open before the Stonewall riots. The second problem is that Mapplethorpe didn't start taking SM photos as a genera till the mid 70s. Third if Mapplethorpe WAS taking photos pre-stonewall then it was with a Polaroid Camera not the kind of photography Tiber alludes to. Fourth and finally the censorship controversy did not happen while Mapplethorpe was alive so Tiber could not have read about those and THEN seen the man.

I've always wondered about the Nazi thing though. I've never wanted to just sweep it away becuse Tiber is a Jewish man, why would he make it up? But at this point I've read Just Kids, I've seen the Biopic with Matt Smith, I'm reading Fritscher's memior, and ive read his other peice in Proflies of Gay Courage. And while Fritscher has acknowledged the problematic lense Mapplethorpe used taking photos of Blackmen, and everyone kinda skirts around his racism no one has ever hinted at a nazi thing. Are there pictures of men dressed like Nazis that Mapplethorpe took? Maybe, we don't have his pictures of the Mineshaft. we don't have his scat pictures. So maybe we domt have those either. But no one has even hinted at it.

It has been two years since I've read that book and it's been bothering me that I can't figure out why he thought Mapplethorpe was a nazi. EXCEPT I think I finally figured it out.

Tom of Finland very early on in his career, drew nazis. He didn't keep it up for very long but there IS tom of finland nazi art out there. Further, some leathermen used to wear swastikas as like a power thing (Mapplethorpe to my knowledge was not one of these men. Fritscher talks about how he wore a pin with the N word on it, i think hed mention a swastika) I think Tiber is just conflating the two most famous gay visual artists who did erotic gay art.

I need to reread Taking Woodstock bc man what else is there to puzzle out of it? And like, why say stuff like that, stuff that so easily checked to be not true? Why lie about a man who died of AIDS being a nazi, when you could say he got you drugged up on [pick literally any drug, probablyan upper] and then made you literally eat shit and it would be more believable?

Current - Hanging out with Salem. To do - Possibly learning about hybrid things more, making new friends, etc.  Don’t really have anything planned but I wouldn’t mind getting her involved in more things again.  Feels like it’s been a while.

Current - Hanging out with Effie. To do - More stuff with Effie like drinking fresh blood and breaking the law.  Maybe the time travel thing.  Could be fun to have her run into Wendy or Kate at some point since she has the connection to Alex.  I honestly made her just to stir up trouble.

Current - Figuring out if he wants to stay around or not. To do - Lord if I know what Brant’s doing anymore.  He needs to figure his shit out.  I will say right now I don’t plan to kill him off or anything but at the same time, he writes himself these days so idk.

Current - Still recovering from what Bex did to her. To do - Stepping up with the council more.  She also wants to find a way to actually teach Bex a lesson but isn’t going to be stupid about it this time.  Could be fun to have her be attacked or even just need her fangs in a small, dumb way and get frustrated when she can’t.  Not really sure.  The idea of a fangless vampire has been in my head for a while now so I’d be curious if it does anything or not.  If anything, just more Kai and Clary bonding since they both were idiots about the demon stuff.

To do - Step up as Omega (if Garrett lets him) and try to do what he can to honor Reed’s wishes.  I know we shouldn’t but it’d be fun to have him somehow see Reed again to say a goodbye.  Maybe he’ll just write to him or something.  Other than that, Rowan’s trying to be good and stay home to help Kenna right now.

Current - Be a new dad and help Esther adjust to parenthood. To do - Possibly move to Chicago.  Work on the magic school.  Find a way to keep the demons off their backs for a while.

To do - Seth is honestly content where he is.  He doesn’t mind helping anyone who needs it but otherwise, he’s fine staying home with the family.  He does want to help Remy with the bakery though.  At this point, he’s done so much, I’d rather give plots to other characters but that doesn’t mean Seth’s going anywhere.  He’s always open for anything.

To do - Asher wants to find his place in this world.  He’s wanted that for a while but after this, he wants to actually do it.  He plans on mending things with Wendy but he also wants to find a way to be happy without her in case this sort of thing happens again.  Talking to Remy more, going out and making more friends, getting a job, etc.  He does want to check in on the other Wendy at some point to make sure she’s alright though.

The film which was Quentin Tarantino’s 6th film and his first main film since 2004 would receive critical acclaim from critics, and it would be considered one of the best films of the year and would be Tarantino’s highest grossing film to this point. The next film from this month that makes it into this category is the sci-fi film District 9, a film set in an alternate timeline where a group of aliens arrive in South Africa and are quarantined off into their own internment camp. One of the more ambitious films of the year, it would also receive critical acclaim and was considered by many as one of the best films of the year which we will delve into later in the review. The next film from this month that makes it into this category is the comedy film Julie and Julia, a film about a young woman who tries to cook all of Julia Child’s recipes while the film also looks at Child’s early days in cooking. Based off of two different books, the film would also receive positive reviews from critics and it would come close to cracking $100 million partly due to the lack of solid comedy films during the month. The next film from this month that makes it into this category is the horror film the Final Destination, the next installment in the franchise about a group of people who cheat Death and Death comes back to claim them. Unlike the previous three films, this film was panned by critics who considered it more of the same much like the previous films though it would somehow overcome it and become the highest grossing film in the franchise which would appear that the franchise still has some legs left. The next film from this month that makes it into this category is the sci-fi romance film the Time Traveler’s Wife, based on the novel of the same name of a man who can time travel while also trying to build a relationship with a woman. When looking at the films released this month, there was one film that was being labeled as a major blockbuster while the other films didn’t have as many eyes on it so some of them could potentially break out and have a good run. At the end of the month, the blockbuster that was G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra did end up finishing at the top of the month with a solid amount of money and coupled with the success of Inglorious Basterds and District 9, the month of August was a solid month and managed to end the summer on a good note.

Overachiever of August 2009: District 9

When the month of August started, one of the films that had a decent number of eyes on it but not enough to really give it too much mind was District 9. This was a pretty unique film in that it was the first for director Neil Blomkamp though he did have support from Peter Jackson, and the subject matter of the film was very controversial in that it aped a lot of the aspects from the apartheid era in South Africa. Add to the fact that the cast was relatively unknown and the film was shot in a found footage style, and there were a lot of questions as to whether the film would be able to find an audience especially coming out the week after G.I. Joe. In the end, it would end up overperforming even the most modest expectations as it would debut at number one in its opening weekend and would finish in the top 3 of the month with over $115 million. Coupled with the positive reviews from critics who considered it one of the best films of the year and as one of the sleeper hits of the year, and there is no question that District 9 deserves its place here to be the overachiever of August 2009.

Underachiever of August 2009: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

As mentioned earlier in the recap, G.I. Jose: The Rise of Cobra was being viewed as the last big blockbuster of the summer and it was in a good spot in terms of release as it was coming out at the beginning of the month. This was an interesting film in that considering how popular the toy line is and those that remember the old cartoon, having a modern day G.I. Joe seemed like it would be a success especially coming off the recent success of Transformers. Unfortunately, much like Transformers which received mixed to negative reviews from critics, G.I. Joe would suffer the same fate as it would receive negative reviews from critics who felt it was unfaithful to the comic series. But unlike Transformers who overcame the reviews and delivered great numbers for both films, G.I. Joe could not do the same thing as even though it did finish with over $150 million and topped the month, there was the feeling that it could’ve done so much more and as a result it deserves the title of the underachiever for the month of August.

It was interesting that the top film from the month was heavy in the awards honoring the worst while the rest were heavy in the awards honoring the best, but that is what’s great about the box office and the films that come out.

Overall Thoughts of August 2009:

Overall, this ended up being a pretty solid month and while it didn’t quite match the success of the previous months this summer, it was still a good month to end what turned out to be a pretty solid summer. While this summer had nothing to match what the Dark Knight did the previous year, there were still some pretty good films released during the summer and this month was no different. We did have three films from this month cross the $100 million mark which was a good showing for the month and one more than came close to reaching the mark, and the remaining films from the month did fairly decent enough though they didn’t do enough to make some noise. 2009 has been a very interesting year thus far as we started pretty strong, went into a bit of a lull through the spring, and then got hot starting in May before cooling off briefly going into this month and we will see how things end up playing out as the fall begins. As for the month of August 2009, it ended up being a pretty solid month and ends the summer of 2009 on a fairly strong note.
