Lady Gaga stuns on the cover of W Magazine's "Best Performances" Issue. She was interviewed by Lynn Hirschberg, speaking about her performance in “House of Gucci”.

In the interview, Gaga gave further insight into how she found the character of Patrizia Reggiani. “I felt Patrizia would dance like she was underwater, like she was coming up for air,” she said of the early disco scenes when she first meets Maurizio Gucci. “Everything about her had to do with striving. At the disco, she knew she was seen—and, in a way, it was the last time she was free.”

For the cover look, she rocked a Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2022 second-skin ruched black jersey criss-cross jumpsuit with detachable red flower brooch.

This is the first YSL by Anthony Vaccarello piece she’s worn since Hedi Slimane left the French maison after serving as creative director for years!

She crowned the look with Bvlgari’s Serpenti Obere white-gold and diamond huggie earrings.

Next up, we got the supernova posing in a look from Alaïa’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection - a one-sleeved, hooded tailored white vinyl dress with daringly high slit.

When asked if she was sad to let the role go at the end of production, Gaga noted, “On the last day of filming, I was on the balcony of my apartment in Rome, and I was blasting Dean Martin singing "Mambo Italiano," and I had a cigarette hanging out of my mouth. I was Patrizia. But I knew I had to say goodbye to her: Large swarms of flies kept following me around, and I truly began to believe that she had sent them. I was ready to let her go.”

She completed her look with the Pleaser Xtreme-1020 white vinyl platform boots with lace-up front.

Last but definitely not least, our girl poses in a red silk slip dress from the stylist’s own archive which she paired with a custom Ellen Christine Couture veil draped on her head.

Another year, another Met Gala, where celebrities walk the red carpet in avant-garde fashion looks and the Internet loses it the next day. The theme of the Gala this year was “Sunday Best,” a reference to the new exhibition at the Museum about Catholicism and fashion. And out of the event emerged the hero we need: Lynda Carter.

Most celebrities took the suggestion fairly literally; there were sexy versions of clerical wear, angel costumes, crosses everywhere. But few attendees bothered to engage with the topic critically. One obvious exception was writer/actor Lena Waithe, who wore a gay pride flag as a couture cape, which was obviously a statement about the Church’s regressive stances on LGBTQ issues.

And then came Carter. Long before Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman, Carter starred as Diana on television (yes, they’re friends). And Carter’s look certainly had hints of her royal TV history, down to a tiara.

But look closer. The tiara (designed by Ellen Christine) bore a Hebrew inscription, one that translated to “Never Forget.” She also had a hairpiece shaped like a Jewish star by Robert Sorrell).

While critics have praised Carter’s look, many of them seem to have missed the subversive nature of her choice. Other stars may have gone the risqué route by making a buttoned-up religion sexy, but they weren’t nearly as subversive. For hundreds of years, the Catholic Church has held a great deal of power, and often wielded it violently, even genocidally. (This is a major reason why criticism of “cultural appropriation” at the Gala falls flat.) It’s cringe-inducing when people like Olivia Munn say their looks were inspired by the Crusades. You know, the Crusades that led to massacres of innocents, including, you guessed it— Jews. After all, what could the “Never Forget” on Carter’s tiara be referencing? The Shoah alone? Not likely, when she was dressing to a theme.

Carter is not Jewish, but her family is; she and her husband Robert Altman have raised their children as Jews. It’s also no coincidence that Carter’s gown was a creation of Jewish fashion designer (and borscht super-fan) Zac Posen. She even carried a handbag by Judith Leiber, who just passed away.

So, brava, Ms. Carter. We see what you did. And it was fabulous.

Ring of Fire -Yenna Yi

Many have dreamed of sailing the oceans of the world; far fewer have actually done it. In her memoir, Ring of Fire, Yenna Yi recalls her life's journey from an upbringing in a one-room house in Korea during the 50's and 60's to her settling in New England. On the way she traveled to Europe as a college student and over the course of ten years, sailed the South Pacific's Ring of Fire and the Mediterranean Sea in a home-built 48-foot catamaran with her husband and two young sons. Yenna will share adventures and reflections from her book. She is a pychotherapist who lives in Colrain.

Local Women In Politics - Ellen Storey & Marie Gauthier

A hundred years ago, American women were organizing to get the right to vote. This year women are running for political offices in record numbers. What are the odds for and against them? What’s it like to serve in politics as a woman? And what else can women do to become involved in government? Representative Ellen Story, a long time state legislator, now retired, and Marie Gauthier, poet and founder of a Franklin County branch of the League of Women Voters, will offer some answers and advice.

Storytelling in Sculpture- Cynthia Consentino

A local sculptor who works primarily with ceramics, Cynthia uses the human figure to explore myths, metaphors, and storytelling in surprising juxtapositions. From life-sized young girls with bunny heads to bird-like women, her sculpture comments on gender, familial roles, cultural mores, and perception, seeing the universal within the personal -along with a sense of humor. She has exhibited widely and teaches sculpture at UMass and Holyoke Community College.

Creativity & Slowing Down (for the Holidays) -Christian McEwen

Christian was born in England and raised near the Scottish border. Her poems, essays, and plays have been widely published. She knows that the festive Holiday Season can be a time of stress and offers an antidote from two of her best known books: World Enough & Time, and most recently, The Tortoise Diaries:Daily Meditations on Creativity and Slowing Down. Their inspirational stories and methods will calm and revive our spirits as we carry on.

Spring Bulb Shows in the Valley - Jimmy Grogan

What’s in a spring bulb? What does it take to stage a spring bulb show? Why do two bulb shows run concurrently every year in early March at women’s colleges in the Pioneer Valley, Smith and Mount Holyoke? Jimmy Grogan, new Conservatory Curator at the Botanic Garden of Smith College, addresses these questions in a presentation that’s equal parts plant ecology and behind-the-scenes reportage to show you how it’s done – in a good year when the weather and bulbs cooperate!

The Fascinating History of Fidelia Fiske - Janet Marquardt

This talk will introduce us to Shelburne Falls’own intrepid daughter who sailed to the Near East in 1843 as a teacher and began a successful school for Nestorian girls on the model of Mount Holyoke Seminary. As a single woman, Fiske represented a new paradigm for the American missionary movement in contrast with the expect-ations of missionary wives. The speaker, Professor Emerita at Eastern Illinois University, is currently a Research Associate of History at Mount Holyoke College.

Love, Laughter, and Rhubarb! - Tinky Weisblat

Tinky will delight us with talk about rhubarb and recipes, as only she can. A food writer and singer, she lives in Hawley with a cat named Rhubarb and a dog named Cocoa. Known to readers and television viewers as the ‘Diva of Deliciousness’,she is the author of three books: The Pudding Hollow Cookbook, Pulling Taffy,and, most recently, Love, Laughter, and Rhubarb. She tries to use her knowledge of American history and culture in everything she writes.
