Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1C
Linda Emond (1959) is a three-time Tony-nominee with a long regional and Broadway career. Major roles include Fraulein Schneider in the 2014 revival of Cabaret, which got her a third Tony nomination, Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion (Chicago), and Abigail Adams in 1776 (1996). You may recognize her voice for her extensive voiceover repertoire, recording audiobooks, commercials, and narration alike. Lately, her screen career has been a lot of fun little murder mystery shows on Hulu, and I support her homicidal tendencies fully.
Jennifer Simard (1970) had her first solo bow only just this past season as Cinderella's Stepmother in Once Upon a One More Time, and that's a crime. She stole the show and our hearts as Sarah in the recent Company revival (and did a temporary stint as Joanne), earning her first Tony nomination. Other work includes Disaster! (2012), Hello, Dolly! (2017), and the pre-Broadway tryout of Death Becomes Her, opening this spring in Chicago.
PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA UNDER CUT: ALL POLLS HERE
youtube
"I am firmly in my Linda Emond era, and I spent months scouring the entire internet to find a quality recording of Linda Emond in Cabaret. And a month ago, this appeared. Go to 14:50 for "So What?" and be delighted like I am. You don't know how happy this makes me. As to her playing a lot of murderous mothers recently, I'm a big fan. I could watch her commit felonies all day long. When is she going to bring that to Broadway?"
youtube
"I continue to be blown away by Jennifer Simard's vocal eccentricities. How is she screltching like that eight shows a week? Obsessed. Also, I'll say it because I'm not a fucking coward. I think she should have won the Tony for Company over Patti LuPone. I understand why she didn't (Sarah is a less showy role than Joanne), but she deserved it for stealing that show every night. Patti was being her usual Patti self while Jennifer Simard was so outrageously funny it had a thousand people crying with laughter every night."

I wish Eliza Jane Schneider stayed as Wendy' VA since her voice for her did sound like her og one. Wendy's voice now is just Sharon's but high pitched

Show time
“The Starling Girl,” with music by Lord Huron, opens today, but only on the coasts, as far as I know.
I ran into a neighbor Thursday who is lobbying to get the movie shown at the nearby single-screen Sun Theater in Williamston - the kind of place where the people who own the theater also sell the tickets, pop the popcorn and run the projector. We’ll see about that.
Lord Huron’s front man, Ben Schneider, wrote the score for the full-length movie, which had its premier at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Directed by Laurel Parmet, “The Starling Girl” tells the story of 17-year-old Jem Starling (Eliza Scanlen). Raised in a fundamentalist Christian community in Kentucky, she’s torn between her piety and her natural human desires.
Meanwhile, Lord Huron’s “Ace Up My Sleeve,” a song written for the movie, will be released next Friday. Take a listen by clicking on the photo.

Do you know of any Euro musical productions besides Rebecca going on in Jan-March 2023?
I'm trying to plan a vacation lol, anywhere in Europe would go
TIA!
Alright this isn't going to be a full list because I'm sure I can't find them all but I've done my best. I've decided to make this a list of all musicals in Europe for all of 2023, so that everyone might find this useful (that's code for I love making lists and got carried away).
Musicals in Europe in 2023
2022.12.10 Listed alphabetically by country and then by opening date. Countries listed below are Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Switzerland. Click 'keep reading' to see the list.
Edit 2022.12.11: added some more musical in Austria, The Netherlands and Russia. Sources to websites where I found this information and where you can book tickets are now at the bottom of the list. Sorry they weren’t added originally, I made the original list at 1am.
Edit 2022.12.11: added performances at the open-air theatre in Tecklenburg, Germany.
Edit: 2022.12.12 added more shows for Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France.
Edit: 2022.12.15 i can’t keep up with all the asks telling me to add things to the list. please see this tag (european musicals in 2023) to see asks telling me about more shows, but i don’t have the time to keep sourcing and adding them to this list anymore.

Citizens of Marevi, Part 2
I thought this deep ocean trench was gonna take up 3 pages, but I fit it into 2. Alrighty then.
In Marevi, sea urchins are typically named after sharp things. Thorn is a sea urchin hairstylist who can clean, trim, style and dye hair. It considers itself a friend to all its customers. To it, doing your hair is one of the main and best ways to express yourself. So, it strives to help others find a hairstyle that suits them. Being considerate and mood-lifting, it’s the type of friend who will buy an extra ticket to take you to see a movie. It sounds like me, but with a lower voice.
Dr. Lina Mako is a mako shark who’s an extremely good listener. The Marevi quintet and their families regularly go to see her for help. They talk to her about their struggles, ask her for some advice, or just chat with her. She’s an easygoing shark lady who works with her patients to make their lives worth living, or at least easy to get through. By that, I mean she doesn’t tell people what she thinks is best; she asks them if they have any thoughts and finds common ground with them.
Cell is a fictional species of fish called a calico fish. They went to visual arts school to study film with Marcella. They’re sort of easy to anger, but they’ve got techniques to keep themself composed. They’re quite pragmatic, and they focus a lot on getting things done. When they’re focused like that, they don’t like to be talked to. Cell really loves to storyboard and animate. Their name comes from film celluloids.
Eliza Vampyro is a vampire squid who is also a film school friend of Marcella’s. She’s loud, proud, and peppy. She is in tune with others’ feelings and is good at cooperating with them. Though she can be quite reckless and isn’t one for analyzing a situation, she’s amusing and witty. She’s also one heck of a director. Her headcanon voice is Eliza Schneider.
Manuel is a manta ray and another friend of Marcella’s from school. He talks pretty quietly and is a very laid-back guy. He’s one for having a good time. He’s known by others for his word play, very often making puns. You can go to more than one interest school in Botania and Marevi; Manuel did just that, going to both visual arts school and language school. He’s an up-and-coming screenwriter.
Lastly, I’ll tell about the others who were involved in Quoth the Penguin, “Nevermore!” with Spike and Natalie. SHH! I know! I KNOW! So, anyway, Basseel is a rare instance of being named after your species in Marevi. He's sometimes seen with a stony look on his face. Generally, though, he is a kind-hearted and comforting eel/bass hybrid. He sticks up for others and has a fatherly sort of nature to him. As they were working on the show, he checked in on Spike to make sure he was okay, and he still does. He played Edgar Allen Doe in the show. My headcanon voice for him is Gill from Finding Nemo.
Dorothea Houndshark, who goes by Dottie, is an 85-year-old banded houndshark. She’s nowhere near famous, but she’s been acting for most of her life. She is a humble and sincere woman who likes to try out new things. She’s comfortable doing almost anything. She was the oldest member of the cast, and she’s had a great time with them all. She played the librarian.
Eleanor and Filippa Elopsi are ladyfish, and a pair of sisters who like to perform together. Their act is called The Ladyfish Duo. Eleanor is compassionate, responsible, dutiful and well-read. Filippa is flexible, lively, firm and steadfast. Their skin breaks out quite often. El played Madeline, an infected member of a zombie apocalypse survival team. Lip played Lepidoptera from Drop Moth.
Sardino Beguino is a sardine who talks like he’s from the Unikingdom. While his friends don’t understand most things he says, they’re totally fine with it. He’s carefree and high-spirited, and he loves ballroom dancing and singing a cappella. Most people don’t know this, but he is from the outer waters of the Unikingdom. His parents, who were performing arts students in college, taught him to dance and arrange songs into a cappella versions. There aren’t nightly undersea dance parties in Marevi, but they’ve adjusted pretty well. He played the lab assistant from The Vulture Biologist’s Heart.
Prudencia is a vaquita. She is a careful and sensible person; she does things with sound thinking and consideration. She really loves to read, and she writes stories and plays. She also enjoys listening to exciting radio stories. She played the wise mermaid scholar from Kingdom in the Sea.
Angarrot is a hybrid of a parrotfish and an angelfish. She's also the rare case of your name being what you are. She isn't a very musical person, so she didn't sing in any of the songs. Outside of acting her parts, she's reserved and quiet. She played the grief-stricken narrator of Lillian.
Dolores Whiteside is a white-sided dolphin and a drummer. She was part of the backup band in the show. She's a capable cetacean who doesn't let anything stop her. She's also considerate of others' feelings, and never does anything she thinks could put them down.
Andreas is an anglerfish who is a trombonist. Like Dolores, he was also part of the backup band. He's an imaginative composer who's at his happiest when he's sharing his creations with others. He and Dolores weren't close to Spike at first, but he got to know them better over time.
Dave Seaweed is a patch of seaweed and a stage director. He directed Quoth the Penguin, “Nevermore!” and has seen other productions of it. He spreads loads of tenderness and doesn't ask for anything in return. No matter if the shows he puts on succeed or flop, he'll do them to have fun. By the way, The Penguin is a rock opera about characters from Edgar Allen Doe’s stories crossing over.
Marlibut is a marlin/halibut hybrid who calls himself Marley. He's a violinist whom Dave is romantically involved with. In addition to his role as the narrator of The Penguin, he worked with the backup band and helped them rehearse. He's also a humble guy who'd never let cheers or applause cloud his mind.
Cerise Inka is a lissome and smart squid. She is a friend of Marlibut’s and has written some songs with him. After working with her, she became one of Spike's favorite singers. Cerise played Lenore, and it was her first ever acting role.
Anglar performs under his stage name, The Sea Devil. Like Sardino's parents, he also hails from the Unikingdom. However, he's a mysterious fellow. Not much is known about him, other than the fact that he and Dave had a couple of falling-outs during rehearsals. He played the Lord of Botania in the show. Once it was over, he disappeared...

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and developed by Brian Graden for Comedy Central. The series revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their exploits in and around the titular Colorado town. South Park also features many recurring characters. The series became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a large range of subject matter.
Parker and Stone developed South Park from two animated short films, both titled The Spirit of Christmas, released in 1992 and 1995. The second short became one of the first Internet viral videos, leading to the series' production. The pilot episode was produced using cutout animation; the remainder of the series uses computer animation recalling the prior technique. Since the fourth season, episodes are generally written and produced during the week preceding its broadcast, with Parker serving as the lead writer and director.
Since its debut on August 13, 1997, 328 episodes of South Park have been broadcast. It debuted with great success, consistently earning the highest ratings of any basic cable program. Subsequent ratings have varied, but it remains one of Comedy Central's longest-running programs. In August 2021, South Park was renewed through 2027, and a series of television specials was announced for Paramount+, the first two of which were released later that year.[2][3] In October 2019, it was announced that WarnerMedia acquired exclusive streaming rights to South Park starting in June 2020 for HBO Max.[4] The series' twenty-sixth season premiered on February 8, 2023.[5]
South Park has received critical acclaim, and is included in various publications' lists of the greatest television shows. It has received numerous accolades, including five Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award. A theatrical film, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, was released in June 1999 to commercial and critical success, garnering an Academy Award nomination. In 2013, TV Guide ranked South Park the tenth Greatest TV Cartoon of All Time.[6]

Taylor Mansion-Lakehurst
193 Bratenahl Rd.
Bratenahl , OH
James and Elizabeth Fitch purchased 55-acres from George and Hanna Freeman on February 13, 1852. The estate was named “Brookwood” and consisted of their home plus five outbuildings. Henry and Eliza Clark acquired 20 acres on the Fitch property's western portion on June 24, 1862. They built a country place at the foot of Doan Street (East 105th Street then Bratenahl Road) in 1862. It included an ornate Federal Italianate style mansion, a carriage house, stables, and even a water tower. The landscape featured a winding driveway through a wooded area, vast green spaces, and lush gardens. The house included gaily striped awnings and vaguely Italianate ornamentation. Frederick and Mary Louise Kinsman acquired the estate from Eliza Clark on May 10, 1896. Joseph Marvin acquired the property on June 18, 1888.
Frank and Sarah Robison acquired the twenty-acre property on November 8, 1893. They demolished the Clark home to make room to build their new home. The grand view of the lake from three sides of the house likely closed the deal. The estate, including a thirty-four room home, a water tower, a carriage house, and a stable, was among the largest in the area. California privet hedges planted in front of the carriage house and stable and along the lake's bank gave the name Villa Hedges. The gracious home, with its beautiful gardens, provided an ideal setting for entertaining friends and associates.
Sophia Strong Taylor acquired Villa Hedges on October 19, 1915. The estate had been reduced to 19 acres but was still the largest parcel of property in the area. Mrs. Taylor razed the Robison home and commissioned Charles Sumner Schneider to design her 26-room home completed in 1918. Lakehurst was an elegant example of Georgian Revival architecture accented with Neo-Adamesque ornamentation. The façade contained seven bays with double-hung six-over-six windows and departed from symmetry with the substitution of a sizeable round-head window in one bay to illuminate a staircase and the addition of a cameo window in another bay. The doorway on the south elevation contained a six-panel door with tracery fanlight and half-length sidelights. Sophia Taylor constructed an enormous lily pond, a peacock house, and excellent docking facilities. White peacocks roamed her eighteen-acre lawn.
Edward Francis Hoban, sixth Catholic bishop of Cleveland, acquired Lakehurst on July 7, 1943, through the efforts of Eleanor Strong, Sophia Taylor’s sister-in-law, after the property had languished for seven years. The Bishop added a chapel connected to the west elevation of the main house. The chapel had stained-glass windows from 18th century France, a multi-colored marble floor laid in a geometric pattern, paneled walls painted with floral motifs, and a ceiling mural above the altar. Hoban also constructed a one-hole golf course to indulge his love for playing golf. Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann was transferred to Cleveland and lived on the estate after Bishop Hoban became ill.
Sea Gull Inc., represented by attorney Donald D. Smith, acquired the property from James Hickey, Cleveland's bishop, on February 9, 1978. Smith, one of eight bidders, planned to put together a group to finance the remainder to develop the area possibly into a townhouse complex. Lakehurst was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 10, 1986. John J. Carney and Betty Jane Kazen acquired the estate from Sea Gull Inc. on December 28, 1987.
Carney and architect Robert Corna made a presentation to preserve the Lakehurst mansion by making it a party center and adding a swimming pool and tennis courts for the use of all residents. The plan had duplex townhouses placed in a staggered arrangement, many with a lake view. The plan also included a seven-story mid-rise building situated next to the mansion for 161 living units. The Planning Commission rejected the plan. John Ferchill and Mike Fratello submitted approved plans for a Lakehurst Planned Residential Development in 1998. The mansion renovation cost proved to be prohibitive, and they demolished the historic mansion in 1999, transforming Lakehurst into a gated community (Lakehurst Drive) of 18 single-family homes off Bratenahl Road in Bratenahl, Ohio. The Taylor Mansion is still listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has not yet been removed, despite its destruction.

And in other Lord Huron news ....
The band’s front man, Ben Schneider, has written the score for a full-length movie that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
“The Starling Girl,” directed by Laurel Parmet, is expected to hit theaters around the U.S. next month. It tells the story of 17-year-old Jem Starling (Eliza Scanlen). Raised in a fundamentalist Christian community in Kentucky, she’s torn between her piety and her natural human desires.
A review on the SCREENDAILY website says;
“Scanlen effectively embodies her character’s internal struggles, unable to vocalize her growing frustrations lest she forfeit her purity — which is seemingly her only value. The slow-burn realization that she can keep her faith while also discovering her own truths is also reflected in Ben Schneider’s excellent score, in which upbeat, optimistic notes are undercut by a discordant, ominous hum of discontent.”
