"Catherine wept for her granddaughters the infantas and implored Princess Juana to tend to them. During the coming weeks, the children were committed to the care of Sofonisba Anguissola, their mother’s favourite artist and lady-in-waiting. Devastated by Elisabeth’s death, Sofonisba said ‘she did not want to continue living’, according to the envoy from the court of Urbino. She agreed to stay in Spain for the infantas however, and became their first teacher. The little princesses would remain in her care for the next five years, until Sofonisba returned to Italy to marry."

“Just as they made a documentary series about the six wives of Henry VIII, they could also produce a series about the four wives of Philip II of Spain, it would be interesting.” - Text & Image Submitted by cenacevedo15

Elisabeth of Valois, Queen of Spain
Artist: Alonso Sánchez Coello (Spanish, 1531/1532-1588)
Date: c. 1560
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Austria
Description
Elizabeth of Valois (1545–1568) was the daughter of King Henry II of France. As a result of the peace treaty signed between France and Spain in 1559, she became the third wife of King Philip II of Spain, although she had previously been engaged to marry his eldest son, Don Carlos. The distance required in a court portrait between the subject and the viewer is enhanced by the magnificence and stiffness of the richly embroidered clothing.

on 2 April 1546, a scant two years later, Catherine delivered a baby girl just before midnight. This second delivery was difficult, and Catherine was bedridden for weeks afterwards. She recovered in time, though, for the baptism in July, held at Fontainebleau. More than a christening, this baptismal ceremony was a celebration of the recent reconciliation between King Francis and Henry VIII of England after the English king’s assault on Boulogne two years earlier. At Fontainebleau, the guests ogled lavish banners sewn with English and French coats of arms that were hung throughout the palace and admired the French and English heralds who stood trumpeting side by side. At the baptismal font, Thomas Cheney, the English ambassador, cradled the baby in his arms, standing proxy for Henry VIII, who agreed to serve as godfather for this child, just as he had for her father. Henry chose a name for the new princess that was dear to his heart: Elisabeth, after his beloved mother and his own daughter, Elizabeth Tudor, who was twelve years old.

Just watched a foolish YouTube short with AI generated images about “the unhappy marriage of Elisabeth of Valois and Philip II”, in which the narrator describes the union as loveless “because Philip never forgot his love for his late wife, Maria Manuela of Portugal”, and that, during their wedding night, “the princess was very disappointed”. Just for the record: Elisabeth was about fourteen when she married a thirty two year old, twice widowed, man who was the father of the man who she would have initially married. At that age, she was yet to “flourish”, and it was custom in the Spanish that the king could not bed a wife that was yet to flourish; Philip was enchanted with his wife and five years into their marriage, he had already abandoned his lovers and embarked himself into a pretty much happy marriage that was only shadowed by the lack of a male son. He was notoriously heartbroken when she died.

Happy birthday to Elisabeth of Valois, Queen of Spain, childhood bestie of Mary Stuart, and partroness of my profile pic (Sofonisba Anguissola).
Elisabeth was apparently not a morning person and had a tendency to overspend. Here's to a real one.
