Motherland Fort Salem is the first show I've seen since Little Witch Academia with a more nuanced approach to leadership, or rather, the way different kinds of people move things forward. In LWA, Akko was the provocateur. She came in with the big ideas, big talk, and willingness to throw herself at things for the sake of them. This would often inspire her friends to help her. One aspect of this, though, is that one reason Akko gathered so many to help her in her plans was that, especially in the earlier episodes, she needed all of the help she could get. In Stanship Takes Off, a much more capable and confident Akko instead is happy to become the helper, supporting her friend's big ideas. Akko is a ringleader, but very much not a traditional leader. Still, even for the series finale of LWA, the final configuration is that Akko sets the stage for the big game-changing idea, and it takes a partner like Diana to see it through with her to reality. As well, the previous generation fails at the same goal because of not having built the same kind of wider relationship network. In LWA, leadership is explicitly a collaborative thing. We see this in Motherland Fort Salem, especially in the developments from S1 to S2. In S1, we begin with the idea of totalizing excellence, from the expectations of the Bellweather family to the dominating authority of Alder, to the expectation of death from touching the Mycelium. Raelle can only perform small petty rebellions, feeling helpless against the scope of the institution's entrenchment. Tally and Abigail both believe that the latter is meant to command others to follow her over a cliff. Scylla answers to a faceless balloon who threatens her life. Anacostia is the perfect soldier. S2 shifts all of those dynamics to something more like LWA. Raelle is "the chosen one" with special powers, but doesn't inspire people to action. Even moreso, neither does Abigail, whose conventional capability only barely sways Adil's heart. Obviously, the entire season is about Alder's downfall. And in the same way that all of the Into The Badlands' cast spend most of the plot reacting to The Widow's initiatives, pegging her as the true protagonist of the narrative, Tally Craven becomes the nexus around which Motherland Fort Salem's world meaningfully moves. Though Tally is much more capable on her own compared to Akko, like the reason why Akko was chosen by the Shiny Rod, Tally is thinking on a level up from everyone else, about what should be beyond what is possible. She pulls Raelle the raw talent and Abigail the honed ambition into executing her intent. It's no coincidence that her big talent is Sight. Tally is literally the one with vision. (Meanwhile, the Mycelium is revealed to be the opposite of the totalizing authority Alder has become. Instead, it was the epitome of her most human moment and a collective of human emotion, a reaction to the tragedies created by political backstabbing.)

if you have more ideas of names for trans folks, writers, etc, just lemme know! (Can also be not-so-cool names for the writers, we need them for the asshole side characters :3)
i will update the list every time I have a lot of new name suggestions. this is not the newest version, but you can find it under the tag #updated name list on my profile.

My former English professor is retiring and gave away a bunch of the books in her office. She's a gem. I giddily returned to campus just to sort through her collection. Super excited about the ones I brought home with me. I thought someone else might appreciate some of the books I found.

60 Sec Rec: Claws
"Claws is a midnight-dark, wickedly funny meditation on female badness set in a South Florida nail salon. It's about good women caught in bad places with worse men. It's the story of hardworking women trying to get by in this economy, set against the surreal, bright, gritty landscape of Florida and the luscious, absurd, extreme excesses of the crime world." [adapted from TNT]
I'm still half-way through, but i already know I have to rec this one.
Surprisingly well-described as 'strip-mall crime caper' by tv line, CLAWS is a show for everyone who complains about female characters never being allowed to be as messy and complicated and outrageous as the men. However, you absolutely get what you asked for, so be aware going in that they won't pull their punches: you wanted messy, you're going to get a huge Floridan mess.
The actresses are absolutely impeccable, and I have to agree with 9-1-1's Athena Grant as she livetweeted this show with her friends: 'Niecy Nash is a national treasure'. If you don't have it bad (whatever that means to you) for at least one of them 5 minutes into 1.01, I despair of you.
Also, Dean Norris as a bisexual druglord slash stripclub owner known to family and associates as 'Uncle Daddy' is... quite something.
Plus, Gina Torres in lingerie in one episode 🥵. And Harold Perrineau's character preparing a strip dance. I won't tell you how that goes, you'll have to see.
Created by Eliot Laurence (Motherland: Fort Salem). Written by Laurence, Emily Silver (Finding Carter, Bones), Sam Forman (House of Cards), Janine Sherman (Criminal Minds, ER)... Directed by Dale Stern (Veep, I'm Sorry), Jamie Travis (Faking It, The Bold Type), Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink, True Blood)... Starring Niecy Nash, Jenn Lyon, Karrueche Tran, Judy Reyes, Carrie Preston, Dean Norris, Harold Perrineau...

Poetry Introduction Blog Post 1:
Hello everyone,
Honestly, my relationship with poetry has not been a strong one. I was excited to enroll in this course to further my understanding and appreciation of poetry and get familiar with poets from all eras. Also, I understand that poetry will help me sharpen my creative writing and analytical skills. With that being said, I am knowledgeable about a few poets from my studies in college. These poets include but are not limited to:
William Shakespeare
Maya Angelou
Emily Dickinson
Langston Hughes
Edgar Allen Poe
T.S Eliot
John Keats
Paul Laurence Dunbar
Phillis Wheatley
John Milton
Toni Morrison
Lack Of Representation of Persons of Color in Poetry:
For students and the world to truly understand the experiences, ideas, and teachings of persons of color, there should be more and fair opportunities for those poets to create. The lack of diversity in this space is due to historical systemic barriers that do not allow poets of color to publish their work or share their voices with the world. I am glad to see that today, there are more poets of color that are pushing boundaries and inspiring people all over the world.
Can't wait to chat with you all! Happy blogging & thank you for reading!

Literary Canon (from kissgrammar)
The Holy Bible, Authorized King James Version [At a minimum, the books of Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, from the Old Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Apocalypse from the New.] Whether or not you are Christian is irrelevant. The civilization in which we live is based on and permeated by the ideas and values expressed in this book. Understanding our civilization, the world in which we live, is probably impossible without having read -- and thought about -- at least the most famous books in the Bible. Historically, the King James Version is considered the most artistic, and thus has probably had the most literary influence.

Considering how important protecting the vocal cords becomes, it’s actually a missed opportunity for the costume department to have awesome neck armor. Do you think when witches from different countries fight each other that they’d go for slitting throats?
In 1x3's "After the Storm", showrunner Eliot Laurence mentions that the vocal-centered practices of the US military are specific to that colonial European origin.
youtube
Other nations' witch armies are similar to ours. Our witch army is mostly based on vocalization. There are armies like the army of India where a lot of their magic is based on gesture. Other nations have other kinds of stuff to work with.
We saw this with the use of sigils (speaking of After the Storm, 1x1's claims that learning magic before 18 is illegal, but we literally see Tally use a sigil in California, so those Cravens/Californians were never sticklers for the rules eh). We also saw how the Marshal's Work is done through whistles. Still sound-based, but whistling doesn't require vocal cords.
And, obviously, we saw the Camarilla develop the science to approximate effects through soundwave synthesis, although they apparently need to filter it through witch vocal cords for the Work to actually manifest. No idea if the Camarilla ever pursued replicating gesture-based Work in other parts of the world, but it was implied that it was only Hearst who made the vocal cord breakthrough, after studying with Santos. As the Camarilla are of European origin, they may not have as deep a body of research into other traditions.
We see both M and Alder slit throats when they fight Camarilla (and Izadora during the famous Fixing tutorial), so it likely is a go-to finishing move in their training.
Here's some looks at the actual field uniforms:
Tumblr media
The default one has a raised collar. I don't know if it could be tightened into a balaclava or not. They don't have face covers during any of the Salva drops I looked at.
Everyone except Adil has a slightly different neck wrapping in Tarim, including the Biddies. The Biddy played by BJ Harrison even has her hood up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, of course, that doesn't help when NO ONE WEARS THEIR HOOD DURING ACTUAL COMBAT, leaving swathes of flesh available for a blowdart. And the jackets themselves don't seem to be made of aramid fibers, given how easily they get cut by knives.
My guess is that their uniforms are geared towards maybe camping durability rather than armor, as witches assume that they will use defensive vocal work like Windshear? And sure, Windshear theoretically would shred all projectiles like a blowdart, but then I'm not sure why Alder wouldn't have a couple of Biddies just always on "project a Shear Dome" duty to prevent exactly this kind of shit. Like we see in Liberia:
Tumblr media
This is the posture we see Tally use in 3x1 to defend against Nicte's Windstrike. And it's why the rebels have to then switch to an underground attack via centipedes, because a direct vocal attack won't work against this shield.
Like, in 2x10 the Camarilla have anti-Work tech going, but in the Tarim that's not the case. They have zero excuse.
Considering that we see Anacostia use her voice to repair weak Windstrike dents in a steel plate, it seems really weird that their clothing isn't reinforced as armor. Why aren't there standard sigils embroidered into the fabric? And more importantly, why aren't they just hooded up in the field at all times? Maybe the value of unhindered hearing is that important? In which case they should have Greek/Roman-style helmets instead. Or even modern style military helmets! Do they really not get that many head injuries from bad Salva landings?

Do you know many poems by heart? Do you see any value in memorizing poetry? While I have forgotten much of what I learned in school, it amazes me that I can still recite a number of Shakespeare’s sonnets (esp. 30, my favorite), lengthy sections of Eliot’s Four Quartets and Neruda’s love poems after so many years. I guess the emotions they stirred in me at the time, coupled with the verbal music, make them easier to remember than, say, the names and dates of Napoleonic battles.
I wish I knew more, but I'm glad I know the ones I do. I'm grateful they made us memorize poems in my Catholic middle-school English classes ("Nothing Gold Can Stay," "Because I Could Not Stop for Death") and Shakespeare scenes in my public high-school English classes (I was Friar Laurence counseling Romeo, I was Brutus quarreling with Portia), and I often think it would be a useful exercise even for college students: not only to memorize the words, but to prepare the poem as for a performance, an emotional interpretation with the emphases all in their places, rather than just disaggregating the poem as a "text" with every phoneme, even every letter, equally up for grabs as hermeneutic spoil. Serious poems are now written to answer to this style of criticism, not to oral performance, and so they are unmemorizable—I don't dislike Louise Glück, I even admire her, but imagine memorizing her poems the way you can memorize Emily Dickinson's or for that matter Sylvia Plath's—while poems that are written by poet-performers today are platitudinous doggerel. (A student of modernism, I'm not mourning for received forms here either, such as regular rhyme schemes and meter; Plath, like T. S. Eliot before her, or Langston Hughes or Hart Crane or Wallace Stevens, is irregular, and yet their music can be internalized.) Along with the realist novel and the mainstream adult film, it's one more artistic unity of form and content once offered to the common reader that has torn itself apart into lifeless "high art" for over-intellectual academics and vapid "low art" for the functionally illiterate masses.
