25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

Worldbuilding is a lot of fun, but ever since I started focusing mainly on fanfic rather than original stories (anyone here remember Elindoore?), there hasn't been much worldbuilding to do. So these days it's more the brainstorming part. I love coming up with all sorts of ideas for fics, plot points, dialogue, or even just random little tidbits that I could use in a fic. Even if I don't end up actually using them, I write everything down and it's really fun to go back through all the different ideas I've had and imagine all the different directions the story could have gone or what I'm planning for the future of the story.

29. What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?

Maybe I'ts just because I've been projecting onto Ganondorf really, really hard in my BOTW AU series, but I like to think I'm pretty good at conveying a character's internal emotions and struggles and making the reader feel what the character feels. I did this a lot with Ganondorf, especially in part 1 of the series. I wanted the reader to feel his stress as though they were really there, and I think I did a good job at it.

I also think I'm pretty decent at dialogue, and I've been complimented on how I write banter between characters (namely Ganondorf and Link in part 2), so there's those as well :3

🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).

Tbh, just being able to start working on my current WIP again after about a month of not being able to write at all. I was planning for this summer to be very productive in terms of my fics (and art), but I ended up spending a lot of it busy with a very important university project that took up all of my energy and headspace. So while I was doing that, I just didn't have it in me to write or draw at all. But now that that's done, I've been able to work on my next fic a bit more. I definitely won't get it done before I go back to uni like I had hoped, but I'm making progress nonetheless!

😈 Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?

I have a tendency to really spell out exactly what a character thinks/feels. I should probably try to do more 'show not tell', but it just comes a lot more naturally to me to make things clear because if I leave things up to body language and other, more subtle indicators, then the readers might miss it or misunderstand. I guess that's more on the reader than me, but the idea of being misunderstood in my writing really, really bothers me. Maybe it's just because I'm autistic, idk. It's not something I enjoy doing per se, but it's something I like when re-reading my own writing because it just makes more sense to me.

🌙  What time of day do you prefer to write? Why?

Usually in the late afternoon or evening, for a couple of reasons. Mainly, that's usually when I'm free to actually write. Uni keeps me busy throughout most of the day during the semester, so after I get home is the only time I really have for writing. On non-uni days, I still tend to write later in the day because I like sitting outside on my balcony while I write, but for most of the day, the sun is on the balcony, making it impossible to see my screen and causing my poor laptop to boil itself alive. But in the late afternoon/evening, the shadows have moved far enough that I can keep my laptop in the shade while I sit out there, thus allowing me to write in my favourite spot :3

👖 Are you a planner, plantser, or pantser? Is it consistent?

Definitely a planner. I can't just start writing without a solid plan for what the fic/chapter/scene is going to involve. In fact, I think this is why a lot of my earlier writing projects before this BOTW AU series (cough cough, Elindoore) failed - I tried to just start without planning anything properly and ended up getting absolutely nowhere with it. If and when I ever revisit Elindoore (which I do plan to do at some point), I'll definitely use all the planning and writing strategies I've come up with more recently that have allowed my BOTW AU to be as successful as it has been (in terms of completeness).

You know, its funny how the elemental spirits were a huge part of my initial ideas for the story and now im actually considering ditching them altogether. The plot has evolved so much since I began my planning and I honestly don't think they're going to fit into the story anymore. I think I might make the Daemos Lake the source of the natural magical energy that exists throughout all of elindoore rather than the source of the spirits' power... idk what do y'all think?

Teeny tiny update because I havent come up with many new ideas lately, at least not any worth making an entire post for.

Hirek's full name is Hirekateth Brikesh Morothvien.

Due to the difficulty that non-orcs tend to have in speaking Orcish, traditional Orcish names such as Hirek's are nearly impossible to pronounce, so he shortens his name to Hirek to make it easier for others. Nuares has had a lot of practice at speaking Orcish over the years that he and Hirek have been together, so he's fairly fluent in the language and is one of the few people who can flawlessly pronounce Hirek's full name.

Nuares's first language is traditional Elvish due to having been raised by a Hetan Elf mother in the Heto Kingdom. Hirek's is obviously Orcish. Neither of them spoke the other's language when they first met, but can now easily hold a conversation in either one. They also speak Ventian Elvish, a variation of traditional Elvish, which is widely used in their current home of Ventia and the language the two of them use most of the time. They only really use Orcish or traditional Elvish when its just the two of them.

For the purpose of my novel, all characters also speak English. Im not sure how to explain it from an in-universe point of view, other than maybe they use English internationally for ease of communication and so most people speak English as a second language? They probably wouldn't call it English since there obviously isn't an England in Elindoore so I might have to come up with a different name for it lol

Unlike earth, Elindoore has 3 moons: the biggest is called Qiendan, the middle one is Priu, and the smallest is Nai. Elindoore's sun is roughly the same size and distance from the planet as our sun, but its slightly redder which is what gives Elindoore's sky its unusually purple colour. There are 12 months in an Elindoorian year, but 6 seasons instead of 4. The seasons are fairly consistent throughout Elindoore, but areas with more extreme environments, such as Shibarra, will experience them quite differently.

The 6 seasons are:

Bloompeak - similar to earth's spring. Mild temperatures, rainy weather and the ideal time to plant crops. Lots of flowers quickly and suddenly bloom at this time of year, hence the name.

Sunsear - similar to earth's summer. Hot temperatures, clear weather, etc.

Ambrafell - similar to earth's autumn.

Shaenwake - ???? (This one's still a work in progress)

The next season doesn't have a name yet, but is definitely the most interesting.

Its the shortest season (roughly 1 month). All 3 of Elindoore's moons are visible in the sky during the day, as well as at night, and are positioned close together for the duration of the season. They amplify each other's light, particularly at midday.

The resulting increase in moonlight causes all magical energy to be intensified, both in the environment and for individuals. This is a unique opportunity for Nerics in training as there will be more magical energy in the environment for them to draw on, making performing spells easier.

However, since their bodies are not accustomed to the sheer amount of energy they gain during this period, Nerics in training often come out the other end of the season extremely exhausted and physically sore. Once every 18-20 years, the 3 moons will align in front of one another, causing an unusual, eclipse-like phenomenon known as a Lunalis

Even rarer than a Lunalis, roughly once every 150 years the 3 moons will align in front of Elindoore's sun, causing a full solar eclipse as well as a Lunalis. This event doesn't have a name yet but I'm working on it!

And finally, the last season in an Elindoorian year is Nieltide. Its pretty similar to earth's winter.

All of this is a huge work in progress and there will be tons more info to come about the seasons and how they're different in different places. Y'all just gotta bear with me on this one lol

A little more worldbuilding~

Im imagining a sort of standard educational system for Nerics who want to learn magic. It would start at about age 10 and last an average of 3-4 years, depending on how well the student performs. Technically, most academies allow students of any age to join, but most nerics make their choice very early in life so they tend to be quite young. Some academies, usually small ones, are dedicated to a specific age group or species, but these are quite rare. Theres usually at least 2 of these academies in each country, but countries with very small populations or very few nerics might not have one at all. In that case, Nerics who want to learn magic would have to move to where there is an academy. Learning magic, even at a basic level, takes a great deal of time, effort and hard work from both teacher and student, so not many students can attend at any one time. The particular academy that Dusty attended, The Larons Academy of Magic for Nerics, had a maximum of 100 students. I havent worked out the exact details of how the training actually works but I'll get to that part eventually. If a student performs well enough in their basic training, they will be assigned a personal mentor who will conduct the rest of their training outside the academy. When a student receives a mentor, they "graduate" and another new student will take their place. All students who are set to receive a mentor must be approved for mentorship by the director (head) of the academy. Dusty joined his academy several years later than most students do and attended for 4 years before Director Cesta Elron assigned Chiron as his mentor. At the beginning of the story, they've only known each other for a couple months and Dusty's training beyond the academy level has only just begun.

Mentor assignments are not mandatory for the student and can be rejected if the student doesnt want to continue their training past the academy level. This is surprisingly common as the training is extremely difficult and usually very exhausting work and the basic magic skills gained from the academy tend to be enough for day to day life. Those who want to pursue their training and reach a higher skill level usually accept the offer of a mentor who will teach them magic far beyond the academy skill level.

Oooop its time to introduce some more characters~

Aight so this guy's name is Nuares Gispell. Hes a gargoyle-elf hybrid*, bigender (he/they) and works as a teacher specialising in potion-making. Hes 104 years old but only looks about 30 due to being half gargoyle (gargoyles can live for thousands and thousand of years) and finds it quite funny when people are shocked at his age. Outside his work at the academy, he runs a small business, making custom/rare/special potions for a very high price. Nuares also gathers most of his potion ingredients himself, mainly from the local forests, but he is known to travel very far for a specific ingredient. He's a popular guy who's loved by his students for being The Cool Teacher™, but he's struggled with prejudice in the past due to being a hybrid, which isn't looked down on as such, but is very rare (hybrids aren't common in general but are especially rare with gargoyles). Hes also gay and in a long-term relationship, but not married.

*Gargoyles in the world of Elindoore aren't actually made of stone, they just have grey skin and the ability to turn to stone at will. So no, an elf did NOT fuck a statue.

The second character is Nuares's boyfriend, Hirek. Hes a big, beefy Orc who looks very intimidating and usually pretty grumpy, but as long as you're nice to Nuares, he's just a big teddy bear. Very huggable and very physically affectionate, but protective of Nuares and not afraid to fight someone if they hurt him. He's not as developed as Nuares but what I have for his backstory so far is that he used to be a warrior of some sort, as Orcs often are, but gave it all up to be with Naures. He's covered in scars and still has a lot of his old gear, but he left that life behind him when he moved to be with Nuares and hasn't regretted it. Theres a lot of social stigma about an Orc and a non-Orc being together, so it took a while for the locals where they live to warm up to them, but they've been together for years and are happy together so everyone else just sort of got used to it. Hes struggled to find any sort of work outside his home country, so he mainly helps around town in construction and resource gathering because his strength and stamina (from being an Orc) are useful. The locals have come to appreciate his help, but some still aren't particularly fond of him. He's also technically an Arcanis but his magical abilities are extremely weak and he's never really needed/used them anyway.

...now im imagining Nuares staying up really late grading some homework or something for one of his classes and he ends up falling asleep at his desk and Hirek puts a blanket over him and kisses his forehead goodnight and I just-

Hey, I have some questions for you! How does your magic system work? What part of the world are you most proud of? What are some quirks your OCs have? Do you have a favourite character dynamic?

Hey there! Thank you so much for the ask!

Let's see, where to begin...

(Warning - long post!)

Some creatures in the world of Elindoore are born with the ability to use magic, and others are not. It's a simple matter of genetics - if your parents were born with it, you probably will be too. If they weren't, you probably won't be. The ability to use magic is also more common in some species than others, e.g. most elves can't use magic, but merfolk usually can. Those who can use magic naturally are referred to as Arcani and those who can't are known as Nerics.

An Arcanis's body has its own store of natural magical energy, which is what allows them to perform magic, alongside saying the incantation (if there is one) and any hand gestures/movements that may be required (it all depends on the spell). Casting spells drains this energy. Usually, the more difficult the spell, the more energy is required. The Arcanis will be massively weakened when their energy is very low. It will regenerate on its own over time, but this process can take several days, so it is often accelerated to just a few hours through the use of potions.

Nerics can learn to use magic by channeling the magical energy from their environment, usually through a staff or crystal, but its a long and grueling process. Their bodies are not designed to use magic so it puts immense physical strain on them, which is why much training is required. It can take years, even decades, for a Neric to be to be able to use magic at the same level as most Arcani, and very few Nerics who begin training ever reach this level. Nerics who have mastered the art of magic are considered almost legendary, and are really quite rare.

Most magic in the world of Elindoore falls under 1 of 4 categories: offensive, defensive, healing, and practical.

Offensive magic is used in fights and duels to attack your opponent(s). This could be something like shooting a fireball or knocking your opponent(s) down.

Defensive magic is the opposite of offensive and is also used when fighting or dueling, but to protect yourself and/or others from your opponent(s). This could be something like creating a shield/forcefield or deflecting an offensive spell.

Healing magic is fairly self-explanatory. It is used to heal injuries and ranges from the most basic healing spells which can heal scratches and scrapes, to advanced healing spells which can mend severe injuries such as broken bones.

And finally, practical. Practical magic is the most common form of magic and frequently used in everyday life by Arcani and specially trained Nerics. Practical spells are usually fairly simple and easy to learn. They can be anything from moving objects, to creating a ball of light to illuminate an area, to a whole host of other things. Its very varied and very useful.

There is technically a 5th category, but it's very rare and many people don't even know it exists. It doesn't have a proper name yet, so for now I will refer to it simply as "dark magic". This includes dark/taboo/illegal forms of magic, such as necromancy, which can be extremely dangerous and are hugely looked down on.

I'd say the part of Elindoore I'm most proud of is the backstory of the Elemental Spirits (see my previous posts if you're not familiar with them). Its still a massive work in progress, but I feel like I've done a good job coming up with all these ideas on my own and fitting them all together to make a story. I'm especially proud of the fact that I've been able to explain why the appearances of the Elemental Spirits have changed so much since the original ones and how the history of the Spirits has influenced the events of the story.

You didn't specify any particular characters, so I'll go with a few of the main protagonists.

Dusty - He's a very curious person who wants to learn everything there is to learn.

Chiron - Has a habit of reorganising his potion storage room when he's stressed.

Talray - Sometimes spaces out, or even completely shuts down, when his anxiety gets overwhelming.

Hmm I think my favourite dynamic is when two people who you wouldnt think would get along at all are best friends, or even lovers. A good example of this is my characters Nuares and Hirek. Nuares is a very sleek, sophisticated looking elf hybrid and Hirek is a big beefy orc. They're polar opposites, and yet they've been a couple for years. Im not sure why but I love that sort of dynamic.

Hey there! Thank you so much for the ask!

Something that I've never really mentioned on here is that I actually had a lot of help from my younger sister in coming up with the initial ideas for the story and the world of Elindoore. At the time, it didn't even have a name or much of a plot, but if it weren't for her contributions towards things like the Elemental Spirits, I probably wouldn't have been able to create the story, at least not in the same way. In fact, it was the merging of her ocs and my ocs into one world that gave me the idea to make it into a story in the first place, because originally I just had some fantasy-themed characters that I thought were cool but I didnt do anything with.

My sister isn't taking part in the writing of this story anymore, but many of her ideas for worldbuilding and characters will make it into the final story, so I have to give her some credit!
