Zagreus is right next to him, so close that their arms brush as they walk, but Thanatos has never felt further from him.

"Try this!" he says, beaming as he reaches up and plucks something that looks like plum but is more red than purple from a tree hanging heavy with fruit, it's branches so long that he doesn't even have to step off the road to grab it.

Megaera snatches it from his hand, looking it over suspiciously. People give them a wide berth as they walk through Zagreus's city, but people wave and bow and shout greetings as they pass.

Even in Elysium, there's not this much joy. People are happy here. It's not endless fighting and torment and a fruitless search for glory. It's people living in ease and comfort, creating and lounging and laughing.

Megaera bites into the fruit much the same as she'd bitten into Zagreus and frowns. "This doesn't have power like the ones on the surface do."

"Why would it need to? The ones one the surface are to keep people alive and strong and to help them make it through winter. Down here they're just tasty," He takes the fruit back and bites into himself before holding it out to Thanatos. "Eurydice manages the gardens and fields down here, more or less. We grow normal stuff too, that's just not as fun for me."

Thanatos bites into the fruit, places his teeth over the indents Zagreus's left behind. It's more tart, like a cherry, but with the bite of something like citrus. It's also not without power, but it's more like a pom or a bracing cup of coffee than the boons of his surface fruits.

"And what do the others do?" Megaera asks, licking the juice off her lips.

He gestures around them. "Sisyphus does most of the city planning, although sometimes people just build stuff they want, which is fine, but if it interferes with his, I don't know, organization, I end up having to move it to some place he deems suitable. Patroclus sort of just does whatever, you know?" He frowns. "People come to him with stuff, because I'm not around a ton, and he's pretty good at keeping the other two from going too overboard when I'm not around. He's like a mayor."

"What about Achilles?" Thanatos asks.

Zagreus grimaces. "Patroclus's husband is Patroclus's decision. I have the diamonds to buy out his contract, and it's not like there's any concern about him staying in Elysium now - he's one of mine. Eurydice loves Orpheus, I think, but she's still pretty pissed at him, but he's welcome too. Sisyphus will probably ban him from the lyre if he tries to play mopey music though."

Megaera says what Thanatos doesn't want to say. Can't bring himself to say. "What about us?"

Zagreus pauses, the sun that can't be the sun warming his skin and brightening his eyes. "What about - what do you mean? You work for my father. I know that."

"So you have no work for us to do?" she challenges, stepping closer so she can snarl into Zagreus's face.

He spreads his hands, like he's helpless, like that's something he can be when he wields the power of a god of the pantheon even without a throne. "It's not really - I don't tell people what to do, none of this was really planned. Even Eliana kind of just - people just do things and I let them, really."

"And will you?" Thanatos asks, desperate and lonely and longing and trying not to show and of it. "Let us?"

Zagreus stills, shooting him a lopsided smile that almost makes him feel like everything isn't crumbling from underneath him. "If that's what you want."

When it comes to Zagreus, all Thanatos does is want.

Eliana Parrish. The name had rolled off her tongue easily, as if it were common for her to use it upon introduction to strangers. As if it was the norm for her. But in all honesty, she could not remember the last time she had referred to herself by that name. She knew why she did it, the jealousy had burned its way through her without an extinguisher in sight. Again, it had been quite some time since she felt such a feeling, which caused it to burn brighter than it had anytime before and with that feeling scorching through her, the words had all but tumbled out of her. 'Eliana Parrish,' she had said with the most sickeningly sweet smile on her lips, 'His wife.' But that smile, that overly practiced and rehearsed smile, fought to keep its spot on her face as she watched some unspoken realization pass across the other woman's face, that devastatingly beautiful blonde that had challenged Eliana all night long. Those words, her name, had hurt that woman, for some reason or another and it almost made Ellie feel bad. Almost. But in that moment, the need to stake her claim, little that she may feel she still had, seemed to win out. After those words, she watched as the blonde left and upon looking at Ryan she knew that she had just dug her grave a little further. Made things that much harder to med between them. The smile, that disgustingly saccharine smile, disappeared within a second and she found herself facing everything she had come to Covington for. Finally. 'Add this to the list of things I now have to fix,' she thought to herself, all but cringing inwardly. Eliana led Ryan out of the building, the two of them silent until the exited the building and the cool air hit her bare shoulders. She stared forward, doing her best to ignore the cold, "I shouldn't have done that." She said it without hesitation. She turned to look at him, her eyes searching his face, "Who is she?"

"This right here is everyone's favorite part of the tour, apart from the tasting, obviously." Ozan said, grinning widely and gesturing to the grapevines. This time of the year only a few bud breaks where visible, but it was still beautiful to see all the plants. After meeting Eliana at the Valentine's Day event and finding out that she was an event planner, Ozan had offered to walk her through the property, hoping to find a way that they could work together. He did so by giving her a glass of their best wine and offering her a walkthrough.

"If you ask me though, my favorite area is the Barrel Cave. A lot of people don't realize just how long it takes to make wine until we show this off to them." He admitted as they began walking in its direction, an old industrial-looking building just on the other side of the vines. He did walkthroughs so often that he almost had a memorized script by now, with Eliana he was more relaxed though, as he felt like with her on board, they could find a way to make the vineyard more popular for the younger crowd. "Do you do all types of events or are you more of a wedding planner?"

santiago has... no idea what's happened. valentine's day isn't really his favorite day, but he knows it can be fun. everyone's dressed nicely and they're all drinking their cute little drinks. and kisses! kisses all around. kisses even for him, somehow. not only that, but kisses from people he's never seen before in his life. santiago is dumbfounded as he makes his way to the bar, but stops as he spots eliana and makes his way over to her instead. "el..." for a moment, he doesn't even know what else to say, and he laughs as he shakes his head because what just happened, "— is your night going okay?"

Sixth Year, a Summary: Chapter 10

Alice Longbottom

Fred was discharged about a week later with nothing more than an eyepatch, which he was pretty excited about. The only downside, in his opinion, was his lack of depth perception and peripheral vision.

“What is it with you Weasley men? You’re always losing body parts.” I said one Saturday at breakfast.

“What do you mean?” Fred asked.

“Your dad lost his ear, you lost your eye.” I explained.

He chuckled, “That’s true.” The owls flew in. One dropped a letter for Cynthia, one dropped a letter for Teddy, one dropped a package for Fred, and one dropped a letter for me. I pushed mine aside because I didn’t really give a shit.

Fred eyed the package with confusion. He picked up the card attached to it, “I heard you needed a replacement.” he read aloud. He flipped the card over, “It’s from Eliana.”

“Maybe a late Christmas present?” James suggested.

Fred unwrapped it and immediately started dying of laughter. Eliana had sent him a jar of Granger Approved Chocolate Eyes.

After breakfast, I went up to the common room and took the letter out of my pocket. I turned it over in my hands. There was no return address. I glanced back at James, “Do you know who sent this?”

“Nope.” He said.

“You didn’t even look.”

He glanced up at me, “I don’t know who sends you letters.”

I opened the letter.

Dear Miss Alice Longbottom,

I hope you realise that the love in your life is fake.

Your “boyfriend” doesn’t really love you. Why else would he ignore you for a whole night, and on New Year’s Eve no less?

And not to mention your “best friend,” Victoir. She seems to care more about that girl Cynthia than she does about you.

And then we get to your father. He gave you, his own daughter, detention just because you wanted to leave a party. And when you tried to explain, he wouldn’t listen.

Need I go on?

No one loves you.

No one wants you.

No one cares.

I scoffed after reading that. I crumpled the letter up and threw it in the dustbin. I didn’t believe it for a second. But the next morning, I got another letter saying the same thing. And the next day, I got another. And another. And another. The writer kept sending them for about a month. I was able to push it away and not think much about it for a while.

And then it got much worse.

It was February fourteenth, and I got another letter. But this time it was a bit different.

Alice,

If you think I’m lying, that’s fine.

But I know for a fact that James isn’t going to do shit for you. Especially not today. It’s Valentine’s day, and he doesn’t love you.

He wants you dead.

That one hit me differently. I started to think, just for a second, that maybe they weren’t far off. I hadn’t seen James at all that day. I stood up and started for the common room. I found James and Teddy in the corridor outside of the common room, deep in conversation.

“Hey, James, I’ve been getting these letters and…well, I don’t really believe them, it’s just…it’s not true, right?” I asked him, shifting my weight anxiously.

James just burst out laughing and ran down the corridor, leaving me stunned and Teddy annoyed, “Shit.” Teddy said. He started after him, “Sorry Alice, he touched the cursed parchment and now he’s like this.”

“Yeah, that makes sense.” I said, mostly trying to convince myself. I walked into the common room to find Vicky reading, “Hey, Vicky, can I talk to you about something?”

“Yeah, of course.” She said, putting the book down.

“Well, I got this letter, and—” I was interrupted by Cynthia running into the room.

“I need help with a girl.” she cried.

“What kind of help?” Vicky asked cautiously, “Cause I’m not in the mood to hide any bodies today…”

“I want to ask her out.”

Vicky immediately started throwing questions at her. I, having no interest in what they were talking about, left. I went to the greenhouses and found my father there.

“Dad, can I talk to you?” I asked.

“Can it wait? I’m a little busy.” He told me without turning around.

“No, I’m not sure it can.” I admitted.

He sighed, “Fine.” He turned around, “I’m listening.”

“So James has been—”

He sighed again, interrupting me, “Alice, sweetie, I don’t have time to talk about your love life. I’ve got work to do.”

“No, It’s not that, it’s—”

“I really don’t have time right now. Why don’t you write a letter to your mum? I’m sure she’d like to hear all about you and James.”

I sighed, “Fine.” I said, and left. I thought back to the letters I had gotten. They described how James didn’t love me, how Vicky liked Cynthia more, and how my father never listened to me. If the writer was right about those things, could what they said in their latest letter be right, too? Did everyone just want me dead?

I stopped walking in front of the door leading to the astronomy tower. I hesitated for a second before I started climbing the stairs. When I reached the top, I took a deep breath. I walked toward the edge of the tower and leaned over the railing. I closed my eyes and braced myself.

“Alice, stop!” James shouted, running up the stairs. He gasped for breath, “Don’t…don’t jump.”

“What happened to the giggling James I saw earlier? He wouldn’t have cared if I did.”

James blushed, “I’m sorry. I touched the paper and… Teddy had to punch me repeatedly to get me to snap out of it.” he said, rubbing his jaw.

I scoffed, “It doesn’t matter. I’ve made my decision.”

“No!” he protested, “No, you can’t!”

“Why the hell not?” I asked.

“Because…” he faltered, as if having trouble coming up with a reason.

“Exactly.” I muttered.

“Don’t—” James shouted. But it was too late. I was already over the railing and in the air. James raced to the edge. He fumbled for his wand. I couldn’t bear to look at him as I fell, so I closed my eyes and braced myself for the impact that got closer with every second. 

“Arresto Momentum!” James screamed. I could feel myself slowing down, but it wasn’t enough. I hit the ground and lost consciousness. I wasn’t dead, but I knew that there was a part of me that would never be fully alive again.

When I woke up, I was wrapped in bandages and lying in the Hospital Wing. James sat next to me, tapping his foot anxiously. When he noticed I was awake, his breath caught in his throat and I could see the relief in his eyes, “How are you feeling?” he asked softly.

I shook my head, “Why didn’t you just let me die?” I asked quietly.

“I don’t think I could’ve if I tried.” He answered. He stayed quiet for a moment before asking, “Why did you do it?”

“I don’t know. The thought was always in my mind, even if it was just a whisper.” I said, “I guess I’ve just been able to ignore it until now. Able to convince myself that I’m actually loved.”

“You are loved. I swear.” He assured me, putting his hand on mine, “Even if no one else loves you, I do. I always will.”

I sighed, “Yeah. I love you too.”

He hesitated, “I don’t think someone can really love someone else if they don’t love themselves first.”

I scoffed, “That is such bullshit. I have never loved myself. But you?” I paused, “I loved you so much I forgot what hating myself felt like.”

He looked at me with a look I’d never seen on him before. We kissed and I remembered why life was worth living.
