I almost changed Eli’s name because i couldn’t figure out for the life of me what about it was it that was bothering before realizing that it’s because Eli Bennet. Eli(zabeth) Bennet. he’s basically got the name as our good ol’ P&P protag. but the more I thought about it, the more i realized that like… that could legitimately be the reasoning for his name lmfao. he got his well-read-ness from someone, and that’d be his mother, who could have purposely named him that for that exact reason. I would not put it past her. that book would have been out for at least half a decade before Eli came into being, and the lady loves books. we can really only blame her for the way Eli turned out, lol. he definitely shares some personality traits with his namesake.

Theo is 30-something and never grew out of his like… ‘weird reptile/amphibian/etc kid’ stage lmao. he’s like, the best frog catcher you’ve ever met, he has like a preternatural sense for the things. Theo has even been know to like… trail off in the middle of a conversation to go chase down something he saw. he has more facts about snakes and lizards and frogs and turtles (and really most animals) than you ever needed to know, and he WILL show you the cool/gross creature that he found and wonder why you don’t think it’s as fascinating as he does (…unless your name is Jed—Jed makes heart eyes at his weird ass little man over everything).

I’ve had several books to hyperfixate on since 2018-2019 when the first draft of TTG came out and I drew inspiration from several authors, characters, stories, and themes to come up with something I could call my own. 

The All for the Game series by Nora Sakavic 

I love Neil and Andrew’s relationship and the way Sakavic doesn’t try to cover the trauma her characters go through.  

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardguo 

Kaz Brekker is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time and the way he is a driving force in this duology is one of my biggest inspirations. Of course, I love Bardugo’s vivid descriptions and the world she’s created. 

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

Who doesn’t love a soft boy with a hard edge? Ronan Lynch is one of my favorite characters. We all know I’m weak for a Scorpio man, but aside from him, Stiefvater has a wonderful way of incorporating magic into the mundane. I can’t forget to mention her lyrical, but not overdone, prose. 

The Green Creek Series by TJ Klune

From the rampant LGBTQ+ representation, to the themes of found family, and magic with limits, everything about this series is perfect. I cannot wait to order a hardcover for my bookshelf! 

And the Villains series by V.E. Schwab

The funny part of this is I had never heard of Vicious or Vengeful until one of my beta readers sent it to me. She said, “Have you ever read Vicious by V.E. Schwab? Her writing style really reminds me of yours.” And obviously, I had to get my hands on these books. When I read them for the first time, the thought that somebody could compare my writing to these stories made me cry actual tears.

But that’s neither here, nor there. Vicious and Vengeful share the most similarities to The Traveler’s Gift than any other story in the list. It features characters with superpowers who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty for the sake of revenge. It’s dark, gritty, fast-paced, and I couldn’t put the series down until I finished.

So I know I just confused a lot of you but let me explain.

Eli is my own character. See back when Sister Location first dropped, there was no custom night. Matter of fact, it was months later when Scott dropped custom night, which is where Michael Afton was revealed as the protagonist. In that time frame I was one of many who had created their own Eggs Benedict and I'd grown attached. Over time, Eli evolved from just an alternate universe Eggs Benedict, into Michael's boyfriend (later husband) and a very important character in my AUs.

Eros/5: the question I knew you would choose lmao. because just about all of Eli’s self worth is tied to his looks. he sees being a pretty face as all that he has going on, and all he’s good for. enough so that when he gets a gnarly cut along his face that’s sure to leave a equally gnarly scar despite best efforts, it sends Eli into a total spiral. no longer thinks he’s attractive or desirable, or that he’ll be able to use his looks to get things done like in the past, and if that’s the case, then what’s the point…

Philia/3: what Eli most looks for in his friends is just like… people who are on his side. that doesn’t mean blindly agreeing with him on everything or anything like that, but just… having people who support him when it ultimately comes down to it. he hasn’t really had a lot of that, even from the place you’d think it should come from the most, such as from his own mother. 

Ludus/1: number one flirting champion Eli Bennett, ha. but he doesn’t necessarily use pickup lines, per se. at least, not enough to have any favorites. he uses a combination of light teasing and physical contact, and it seems to get the job done, man or woman. he’s also not much coaching others, with his main advice being along the lines of ‘have you tried… not doing that?’ after poor attempts. sooo helpful. 

Philautia/4: besides physical attributes, what Eli likes best about himself is how cunning and quick he is. the only time it bothers him that people tend to overlook that is when he’s like… brushed off when actually making a good point/plan/etc. and feeling like no one is listening to him, but mostly, he’s content to let people underestimate him and think he’s just vapid and self-involved. tends to work out in his favor. 

Philautia/5: Eli has always mostly had mostly that opinion of himself from the first questions, about how he’s good for being pretty and little else. so he’s leaned pretty heavily into that identity, even if he’s pretty insecure under all the bluster and ego. but Eli has learned to value more about himself than simply how he looks and what he can get people to do for him because of that. that’s in large part due to the gang he’s apart of, due to being around people who genuinely like him for reasons outside of that. and also because of Silas in particular, because he never holds back on giving Eli the affirmation/reassurance he needs. he’s slowly starts to view himself at more.
