Repost from @dwellmagazine Whether in the Brazilian rainforest or the Santa Cruz Mountains, a cabin retreat offers the chance to disconnect from the stresses of modern life and fall off the grid, communing with nature and ourselves. We look back on some of our readers’ favorite hideaways this year, from the wild and remote to the groovy and folkloric. Head to the link in bio for our top 10 cabins of 2019. – Featured: @elevatedspaces Photos by @benjaminras #cabin #cabinporn #roundup #diycabin #moderncabin #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #santacruz #elevatedspaces https://www.instagram.com/p/B6XHVWCgqQW/?igshid=1o7eui5w4vm4p

Our friend @elevatedspaces just sent along some new photos from a recently finished project. He writes: “After California's wildfires vaporized our previous cabin we haven't quite been ready to invest much emotion or money into rebuilding. Still, Molly (my wife) and I were yearning to build something with friends, so I worked up this little A-frame hut that's super-efficient with time and materials. It's just under 120 square feet (meaning it won't require a permit in many areas) and used only $2500 in materials. (Yes, that's 2022 prices.) None of the roof panels needed to be cut and most of the plywood are full sheets. Ours is half suspended in a couple of redwoods with Garnier Limbs, but it obviously doesn't have to be. The siding is Canadian hemlock and the floors and ceiling are cheap plywood. The queen-size bed frame is pine boards and 2x4s, and the bedside tables are built from the scrap furring and siding. We built the whole thing over two weekends and I have to say it felt very rewarding to stand in a structure with our friends, under a roof that didn't exist just that morning. Like old times”. yes please. via Cabin Porn
An off-grid cabin, perched atop 10 sloped acres of redwoods on the California coast. Designed, built and owned by partners Jeff Waldman and Molly Fiffer, and constructed over the course of one year, by the pair and their friends.
Clad in local redwood siding, with birch plywood walls and exposed Douglas fir timbers, the cabin is outfitted with large doors that allow the cabin and deck to function as a single indoor/outdoor space.
The couple had no prior design or construction experience, beyond the 18 months of smaller projects on the property, which led up to the cabin build. They spent a year salvaging most of the windows and the panoramic door, which the cabin was designed around. The rest of the design was informed by their capabilities and by the constraints of the site.
To reduce costs, the kitchen was constructed from standard wire shelving and mounted to Ikea countertops with closet rod hardware. The cooler slides out on casters and the propane stove is a utilitarian RV model. The shelves, bench, and stow-away loft ladder are made from slabs of madrone, which were chainsaw milled from trees felled on the cabin site. The redwood timbers and siding came from a neighboring sawyer.
The communal weekend getaway, shared among dozen of friends, also features a series of suspended tree decks, elevated outdoor shower, wood fired hot tub, and a host of camp activities, such as workshops, axe throwing and archery.

Repost @dwellmagazine A DIY couple crafted this tiny cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains for less than $35K. After renting in San Francisco, California, for 10 years, Molly Fiffer and Jeff Waldman of @elevatedspaces wanted more: more autonomy, more of the outdoors, and more space to host their tight-knit community of friends. In 2016, the pair bought nearby land on which to experiment and explore what “more” could look like. Since then, the pair and their pals have built a compound complete with sheds, tree decks, a pavilion, a wood-fired hot tub, an outhouse, an outdoor shower, and, now, a redwood cabin where an ever widening network of friends gather for skill-sharing workshops and events. “I’ve been in places where it didn’t feel like I could try and fail. Here, you can bring over a friend and say, ‘Take a hammer and nail. No one’s around. Give it a go,’” says Molly. Tour the impressive DIY cabin when you try Dwell+ in the link in bio. - Photos by @benjaminras #cabin #diycabin #diy #diybuild #santacruzmountains #elevatedspaces #moderncabin #cabinporn #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #dwellplus https://www.instagram.com/p/B33S6x3Fc2i/?igshid=1dvuc058e1y5l
