Wow, in January the Bolshoi is giving three young dancers the opportunity to debut Giselle! January 12th at 12:00, Elizaveta Kokoreva is debuting the role, Eleonora Sevenard in debuting the same day at 7:00, and Eva Sergeenkova is debuting the role on January 13th! Dmitry Smilevsky is also debuting Count Albrecht on the 12th with Kokoreva!
This is also exciting because Eva has been out on injury all season so far. It will be great to see her back on stage.

Inside Marilyn Monroe’s Home (Part 1): Beverly Carlton Hotel 1951.
After reading a quote in which she told Look Magazine she did not want to be shot inside her and Arthur’s Long Island home, I was inspired to do a mini series on the homes she did allow to be photographed in.
To start, I’ll be doing an in-depth look into her 1951 bedroom at the Beverly Carlton Hotel.
She converted her sofa into a very-comfy makeshift bed with satin/silk bedding. She’s sitting in comfy pajamas reading The Poetry and Prose of Heinrich Heine (1948). Beside her foot is a script, likely for Clash by Night or Don’t Bother to Knock.
The far left table has art books like Michelangelo and Albrecht Dürer, a trinket dish, and a 1949 Year Book with magazines. Taped to the mirror above her is Pieter Bruegel’s “Portrait of an Old Woman” (1593), Amedeo Modigliani’s “A Woman” (1910’s), and Paul Cézanne’s “Card Players” (1890s).
To the right is a framed photo of Eleonora Duse, an Italian actress whom she admired. In the middle rests a standing clock, Anna Karenina on top of Charlie Chaplin, a painting, and a bouquet of flowers. She was known to always have fresh flowers in her home as it gave her a homey feel. A glass of champange with more book rests beside; above is a painting of Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam.
On the bottom is a row of books. At the time, amongst her collection, was How to Develop Your Thinking Ability by Keith Keyes Jr., The Loyalty of Free Men by Alan Barth, Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, an Albert Einstein book, An Enemy of the People by Arthur Miller, and more.
Interestingly, in front of her radio, along with more books, is a framed photo of a man that looks like Miller. The two did meet in 1951 but despite their future romance, they were just friends then. She has another clock which was recently auctioned by Juliens. They described it as “a beige metal with a ribbed plastic retractable cover by Westclox.” Beside that is a phone, which she once said, “Do you know who I’ve always depended on? Not strangers, not friends. The telephone! That’s my best friend.”
In the second photo, she reads a music sheet as she practices singing.

Marilyn Monroe at home at the Beverly Carlton in 1951. Photo by David Cicero.
It’s a very large image, let’s take a closer look.
She’s reading The Poetry and Prose of Heinrich Heine (1948), near her feet is the screenplay of her upcoming film Don’t Call Me Mother, which during production would be retitled, Don’t Bother to Knock. There’s a glass of wine or champagne next to the bouquet of flowers; under it, a 1950 edition of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, a dictionary, and a photo of a man who suspiciously looks like Arthur Miller, whom she’d marry in 1956 (she had met him in 1951 and had told her acting coach, “That’s someone I could love forever.”).
(The very first book in the row behind her, Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, is the adaptation by Arthur Miller.)
Also among her books: The Loyalty of Free Men (1951) by Alan Barth, Anna Karenina lying on top of Charlie Chaplin, many books on acting (Building a Character, Focus), and Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Her love of Russian literature had been ignited by her former sugar daddy, Russian-born Johnny Hyde, who had died a year before; and also by her acting coach, Natasha Lytess.
On the table in front of her are books about Michelangelo and Albrecht Dürer, and there’s one of those year-in-review books, from 1949.
Her mirror has been decorated with several pictures: Bruegel’s Portrait of an Old Woman (bottom left), A Woman by Modigliani, and Cézanne’s Card Players.
Finally, on top of the bookcase, in the corner, is a portrait of famed Italian actress, Eleonora Duse, who once remarked, “Away from the stage, I do not exist.”

Big thanks to Libi Fileman, who saw the Russian Ballet Icons Gala last night, and kindly sent me photos of the program!
Here are the transcripts of Nikolai Tsiskaridze’s message, which was printed in the program (I also threw in some interesting historical photos for your enjoyment), and the biographies of the VBA students, who performed at the gala.
I am delighted to welcome participants and guests to the Russian Ballet Icons Gala “In the Steps of the Ballets Russes”.
St. Petersburg is a major centre of choreographic art, and the Vaganova Ballet Academy is well known around the world. Russia’s oldest ballet school, it was founded by Empress Anna in 1738, and to this day continues to preserve the heritage of its great teachers, choreographers and ballet artists.
Today, we are pleased to present a scene from the ballet “The Fairy Doll” (my own version of the Legat brothers’ choreography). The plot of the ballet hangs on a chain of dance numbers, creating a charming fairytale in which mechanical dolls come to life and experience human feelings and suffering. The problems of the toy kingdom are ultimately solved by the triumph of good over evil, with justice prevailing.
The first performance of this ballet was Nikolai Legat’s debut as choreographer at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1903. It had a brilliant cast of dancers: Anna Pavova (Spanish Doll), Vera Trefilova (Japanese Doll), Agrippina Vaganova (Chinese Doll), Olga Preobrajenska (Baby Doll) among others.
In the centre of the ballet was the great pas de trois of the Fairy Doll and two Pierrots (Mathilde Kshessinska, Sergei Legat and Mikhail Fokine). The performers were all among the first graduates from the Imperial School of Ballet, now Vaganova Academy.
Tonight, on the stage of the London Coliseum, you will see “The Fairy Doll’s” most interesting pieces, performed by senior students of the Vaganova Academy. I wish you all the best and the brightest impressions from this encounter with the past, the present and the future of Russian ballet.
Nikolai Tsiskaridze People’s Artist of Russia Principal of Vaganova Ballet Academy

where: summer residences
Summer residences are used by members of the Royal House and Family of Mecklenburg as their summer residences, as well as for other times of the year, such as Easter. These residences are closed to the public, though the gardens and grounds may be accessible on special occasions. Summer residences are shared between members of the Royal House and Family.
Schlossgut Groß Schwansee
Schlossgut Groß Schwansee is the summer and Easter residence of Karolina Augusta I of Mecklenburg. The Schlossgut is located 300 metres from the beach and is surrounded by parkland and fields. It is the smallest of the monarch’s three residences. The Schlossgut was previously the summer and Easter residence of Princess Heinrike Franziska, Duchess of Ratzeburg and Princess Ingrid Sophie, Duchess of Teterow until 2010 when they changed their summer residence to Schloss Bothmer.
Schloss Bothmer
Schloss Bothmer was the traditional summer residence of the monarch from 1954 to 2010 until Karolina Augusta moved to Schlossgut Groß Schwansee, trading places with her aunts. Queen Eleonora and Prince Klaus Wilhelm still use Schloss Bothmer. Princess Heinrike Franziska, Duchess of Ratzeburg and Princess Ingrid Sophie, Duchess of Teterow have used the Schloss as their summer residence since 2010. Schloss Bothmer is in the town of Klütz, where the Royal House and Family attend church at Marienkirche every Easter.
Schloss Kalkhorst
Schloss Kalkhorst is the summer residence of Princess Alexandrine Luise and Prince Alexander, Duchess and Duke of Waren and their children. Prince Albrecht Gustav and Princess Veronica, Duke and Duchess of Bad Doberan and their children began using the Schloss as a summer residence in 2010.
