Blog Post For The Jarrarium Build - https://glassboxdiaries.com/how-to-easily-make-a-walstad-shrimp-jar-beginner-friendly-jarrarium/
I really wanted to try and keep this well trimmed but I'm really liking the wild, unkept look of it.
For now, I just want to leave it to do its thing and grow but there is an annoying green surface algae problem with the tank that may need some intervention.
Carpeting dwarf hair grass aka "eleocharis acicularis "mini""emersed, it is also similar to growing plants the "dry start method". The plants are in about 1" of sand with root tablet fertilizers, as well as just enough water to cover the sand and plastic wrap over the top to keep the humidity in. The light is on for 12 hours a day because growing emersed their is little to no chance of algae. They have been in the containers for about a week and i can already see new growth starting!
added some bolbitis heudelotii to the 29 the other day. felt like a crime doing an african biotope tank without including one of the coolest aquatic plants in the hobby

The fish have moved into their new tank! It's 70L, plenty of room for everyone and more friends will be added over the month. Excuse the mess...they've just been fed :D
For those interested, I cycled the tank using already cycled media (Fluval Biomax) from the small tank and using Fluval Bioenhancer. The substrate is Fluval Stratum volcanic soil.
Plants are Siamensis 53B (by the log & rocks) Anubis (under the filter) and the grass looking plants are Eleocharis Acicularis which will hopefully grow into a carpet.
The jar needs a bit of a water top up but other than that, its going strong, never had a problem with water parameters and plant growth is starting to pick up as we approach the warmer months.
The jar doesnt have a heater in it and my ambient room temperature kept it at around 15-16C (59-61F) throughout winter.
Theres no filter in it either with all filtration being done via the plants in the jar.
No air stone either so it does have some pretty bad surface algae but the shrimp and snail seem to enjoy eating it.
26 Sep 2019 - Filled up with water and planted Eleocharis Acicularis “Mini’ from Tropica 1-2-Grow. Used 1 pot for 30x30 area (less footprint of the rocks)
This hairgrass develops the same shape of leaves as Eleochalis acicularis (a beautiful carpet plant) but it grows taller beyond 12 inches. Because of this characteristic, this species is suitable to be planted in the background. This hairgrass grows a little slower than Eleochalis acicularis.
This hairgrass as well as other tall hairgrass is usually used in the background of the layout. These produce an atmosphere that resembles a grassy field. With such features, the tall hairgrass is suitable for driftwood layouts that focus on the expression of natural ambience.
