Progress Checkup! (Apr. 2025) | Scratchin' Melodii Devlog

Hey there! I felt like it was time for another devlog, it's been a little longer than usual I think. I felt it was less of a priority since I'd just shown off a gameplay preview, so my deepest apologies to all 7 dedicated devlog readers...

First off, in case you missed it, Lucid Mode was shown off in a recent gameplay preview of Stir & Mix!

During stages, freestyling well enough on two consecutive lines will allow you to ascend into Lucid Mode, a state where there are no charts or suggestions to follow, just your own freestyles! Successfully completing the stage in Lucid will give you a special ending scene and an emblem on your rank as lasting proof of your success.

To answer a few questions about it I've seen floating around:

Q: Does this mean the other parts of the song are gone? A: No, going Lucid is something that only happens if you manage to activate it yourself. Otherwise, the song continues as normal.

Q: Can it be disabled? A: Yep, if you're like really good at freestyling but still don't wanna ascend into Lucid, there will be a toggle in the Options menu to enable/disable the ability for it to activate.

Q: Can this happen in every stage? A: Probably! That's the plan, unless I find a rare reason it wouldn't work well for one.

In the preview, you can also see that Stir & Mix itself has been updated a bit in the vocal and artwork departments! Compared to the 2023 beta version's vocals, 2cada tuned them with a bit more stylization this time. In terms of artwork, the animations were redone in my current art style, as another step towards a consistent art style by release. In the process, I was able to make the animations much more fluid and expressive!

Little fun fact about that, Jamtine's hair actually used to cover up more of her eyes/eyebrows as if they were bangs of some sort, but I eventually moved it out the way so I could have more freedom with her expressions, which I found important for a character like her. An inverse of that philosophy would be Nami, who has her sunglasses and bangs cover up her eyes/eyebrows to give her a more mysterious feel. It's hard to tell what's going on in Nami's head! (If anything at all!)

Now, let's talk about the gameplay and UI again. Here's a little quickfire of some changes I've made: 

The Next Line Tab has a "NEXT" text sign above it and will stay at the end of the Player's line to help with clarity

 The background bar of each line now adjusts to the line's length to also help with visual clarity

When points are gained or deducted, it now briefly flashes over the score counter instead of having a separate bubble

Holding the button on pow notes instead of tapping them will accumulate extra points until you either release it or reach the max amount. The more buttons you manage to hold at once, the more points you'll get!

Landing notes on the later end of a beat marker without being off-beat can count as swing rhythm, adding extra points.

To account for the new score system and its balancing, you won't need the Perfect Bonus to be eligible for an S-rank anymore

Overall, I'd say the new rhythm/scoring system is much more consistent, balanced, forgiving, and accurate to the game's inspirations compared to how it was in the beta demos.

As for future stuff I'm working on, I've been animating the Boss battle for Act 2. Not much I can really say about it atm, but the song's going for an electro-funk style. Pretty happy with how it's been turning out so far!

I've also been redesigning the stage select screen to be easier to navigate and easier for me add more stages and acts to it. This one's able to just pull the needed information from each song/act and arrange it all accordingly instead of me having to manually do it each time I add something. It's still very much a work in progress, but it's functional! I haven't gotten to drawing McWave's new icons yet... (Don't look too deep into the number of acts here btw, it just stops at 3 because that's as far as I've indexed it at the moment!)

I've also started working on a redesign for the results screen. Since the new scoring doesn't have equal spaces between the rank requirements, I decided to replace the linear rank meter with a more dial-like one that goes through a cycle per each rank threshold you pass. Along with it, I'll have to finally make new results screen animations for Melodii at some point. Not sure yet if the pose Melodii's doing in this concept sketch will be what I end up using, but I definitely will be letting them aura farm more.

To save the most boring for last, optimization. For the notes in stages, I've started using a method called "Object Pooling". (Which I actually hadn't heard of until recently.) Basically, note objects get recycled now when possible​ instead of created/destroyed, which helps reduce memory usage. For materials, I've managed to up performance by using Texture Arrays and a pretty convoluted shader trick where I put the vertices of UV layers at specific coordinates, which are then decoded to be used as material info. (e.g. color, spec, emission) That way, more meshes can share materials while looking different instead of loading in separate ones. Not really sure how common this is, as I couldn't find much info on it, but it seems to be working pretty well so far! I was also able to cut performance costs in some areas by taking a screenshot of a background model and having the game render a flat image instead of the entire model. This works pretty well for shots where large background models are far away or when the camera angle stays static.

Chapter 3 —-- In Control

His tears are pouring over your shoulder. “Al?” You gently rub his back. He reaches into his pocket and procures another yellow pill. (Are these anti anxiety meds?) He steps back and throws the pill down his throat. He takes a deep breath and you gently swipe a tissue over his cheeks. 

“Th-th-thank you. I k-k-kept up the act a bit longer than p-p-planned.” 

“Well you did a fantastic job!” Your turn to plant a kiss on him though you have to half-jump to reach. The smile it brings from him is so adorable you can actually feel your eyes dilate. “How can a demon be so adorable…” you definitely didn't mean to say that out loud but there it came, out with your breath. Before you could process anything from that blunder you’re in Al’s arms, legs wrapped around his waist, as his forehead sits against yours blue bangs tickling your temples.

“I’m a-d-d-dorable huh?” He laughs and twirls you around. (Holy cow, he is strong!) “We should head out, my sunshine.” His voice purrs that new nickname and you melt into an embrace as he lets you slide down his frame to be standing on the floor. You look at him and giggle, both of you have the goofiest looks on your faces. His smile grows suddenly “Oh! and don't think I missed you mentioning having a recording studio. This I must see!”

“Well then let's go. I seem to remember you mentioning some blueberry pancakes.” 

“Th-that I did!” 

You lead him out to your car and cringe at the state of it. Random books, games, and antiques you had planned to restore. “Sorry, I wasn't planning on hosting a guest… I promise my place is clean.” You hear the door and see Al plop into the passenger seat with bright eyes turning over an old radio in his hands. (He likes radios? His voice did sound like one at first.) You hop in and start up the car before acknowledging his interest. 

“I rescued that beauty from an old thrift store. Poor thing needs some TLC. Sadly when I got it Boss decided to add work hours with my promotion, so it got stuck in limbo…” 

“TLC?” 

“Oh, it stands for Tender, Love, and Care. I restore antique things I like. If you like that you are going to love the ones in my studio.”

“You’re perfect.” Now it was his turn to accidently slip a thought out with his breath. You both chuckle and the remainder of the car ride goes by in a wave of blushes, glances, giggles. You finally reach your little cottage and Al follows you inside, still clutching the radio. You do a little spin in the living room of your small abode. 

“Here we are! I gave up having a typical bedroom so I could bring my studio to life….” You say glancing at the haphazardly made futon around the corner. “...but this is what you wanted to see!” You throw a door open and let the back lights illuminate the perfect merriment of restored and new recording technology creating an impressive switchboard. Bookcases filled with restored radios, cameras, and phones. Al’s eyes are wide and with a flash of green light he returns to the blue deer figure you met hiding under a table. You lean against the switchboard and flick a switch bringing the tape reels and record player to life. 

“So did you know I liked radio, or is that also your thing? Judging from your reaction I'd say you have a thing for broadcasting too.”

“Y-y-yes my sunshine, I am known as The….” He summons a blue cane with a microphone atop it and twirls it with a flourish and finishes it with a bow. “The Radio Demon.”

“Well Mr. Radio Demon, can I assume you dance?” You flick a switch and the room fills with your favorite electro swing mix. 

Al tightens his grip on the microphone, then it disappears as he offers his hand to you. You accept and are immediately pulled into the best dance of your life. (Not that you had many other dances under your belt, and definitely the only one who could actually dance to your music.) All timid nature is gone as Al spins you around, leading you in perfect time to the music, and even lifts you above his head. 

You’re nose to nose as the song ends, both of you breathing heavily, and in the same heartbeat, his hand is behind your head and your fingers are gripping his collar while your lips explore his. (How do our lips fit so perfectly together…?) You sigh into the feeling and he mewls in response gently flicking his tongue against your lower lip. You allow access and he gently moans at the feeling of the deeper kiss. He is holding onto you so tight, like you would run away if he let go. You let your hands explore his hair, confirming your suspicions of his ears being sensitive as he melts onto his knees at the first light touch. He breaks away the kiss and looks slightly sad for a moment as he gently unzippers your dress. You laugh remembering that for some reason you chose blue undergarments that day. (I guess that was fate.) His eyes glow as he admires this little surprise. Quickly fumbling with the buttons on his coat, starting to shake again. 

“No-no-no, I need to be in control for this…. First t-t-time, I don't want to scare you off.”

He goes to grab another yellow pill and you catch his hand gently.

“What if I don't want you in control?” You look him in the eyes. 

“P-p-please, I want to b-b-be.” 

The look he gives you tells you how important it is to him so you let him down the pill and help undo his buttons while he takes a deep breath. You make it through all the buttons (Three layers is a lot of fucking buttons.), and pull his upper vestments off. As you touch his chest you're surprised to feel soft fur, as pale as his skin. You run your fingers through it letting out a deep contented sigh.  He closes his eyes and leans into your touch. Grabbing your wrist, he begins planting small kisses along your arm until he reaches your lips again where he dives back in. Lone Digger (Caravan Palace) - The vibe I'm going for here is modern pop influenced by the 1920s and 30s, stuff that will remind the audience of the Roaring 20s aesthetic/the Baz Luhrmann movie while staying grounded firmly post-2000. So: electro swing! This is an early needle drop, maybe during Nick Carraway's introduction to Fitzgerald High. (He's the new student.)

2. Make Me Feel (Janelle Monáe) - I am a Janelle Monáe stan first and foremost. This song establishes the romantic energy of the Gatsby/Daisy/Tom love triangle and the fun of non-stop partying... with just a hint of the manic energy that will creep up on us later.

3. Feeling Good - Bassnectar Remix (Nina Simone, Bassnectar) - Not the 1920s, but a similar idea: mixing old and new styles of music. In my head this is playing at the first Big Party Nick attends, as he realizes just how rich Gatsby is.

4. Money (The New Respects) - This is a good montage song, and it's very on-theme. (It's a deranged high school rom com, I'm allowed to do on the nose choices.) Could be Nick and Gatsby hanging out, advancing the plot, could be Gatsby and Daisy cheating on everyone with each other, but either way things are moving and not in a good direction.

5. 7 rings (Ariana Grande) - Shit has officially hit the fan. And Jay Gatsby has officially hit Myrtle with his car. We're in the final act of the movie, moving ceaselessly toward the confrontation that probably ends with Gatsby's death. The aesthetic of extreme wealth and conspicuous consumption is still there, but it's all gone dark.

Credits: everything i wanted (Billie Eilish) - Not everyone interprets this book the same way, but I think this song hits the emotions of the ending pretty well. It doesn't quite mesh stylistically with the rest, but it would work for the credits. And it's popular, right? The teens still like Billie Eilish?

What muses may notice about Emmet's appearance, and general distinctive features of him:

Emmet's constant smile, of course. But the hint of sadness could be picked upon by how his brows are drawn together.

The unnatural, glowing eyes: silver, sure, but when the light hit, the red pupils and reflective nature of it is more visible. (Ultra Human lineage :) His great-grandfather was a faller, and now residential test subject as a Pheromosa back at Kalos Mansion of the extended family :3 ) ((Emmet does not think his eyes are unusual, but instinctively covers his eyes under his hat's shadow.))

Big nose. He has a big, aquiline nose that fits his face--you could not imagine him with a smaller one.

Prominent ears. Since he got a few comments on them before, he usually covers one, but tucks his hair behind his left ear--he insists he cannot hear with hair on the way and Ingo is usually on his left, so he keeps it visible to hear his twin better.

Vibrant hair color: Despite getting grey hair very early in teenage years, his hair seems almost shimmery and verrry soft. The vibrant hair color comes from Ultra Human lineage as well :)

Long, black eyelashes: His eyelashes and eyebrows are black, since his hair turned grey but they have not, not yet at least.

Citrusy/Flowery Scent: Emmet loves perfumes, and his faves are the citrusy, fresh, uplifting scents. After a long work-day, the distinct smell of the station gets to him, but usually, his scent is as sweet as he looks :)

Distinct Sideburns "Hair Knives": Mix of both bangs and sideburns, the hair knives seem almost glued to his face. (Sadly, unlike Ingo, Emmet is not lucky in facial hair department ;;; So he always has involuntary clean, shaven look.)

Pointy canine teeth "Fangs": I promise he don't bite.

Eyeliner, mascara, slight lip gloss: Emmet likes makeup. And often, his eyebags and possibly small injuries from constant intense battles he receives are covered with makeup :)

LOUD VOICE. TOO LOUD. HELP: It is no wonder that this train conductor can beat his train whistle in volume. If he is not particularly sad, your talk with him might result in hearing loss. :) He tries not to be too loud, he promises.

Accent..? : Emmet does not have a particular accent, but if he gets too grumpy or is shittalking someone, he can slip into Kalosian accent. Also, he has trouble pronouncing the letter "r", it is a recent development (only in last decade) that he managed to pronounce it--so he is going to flaunt and exaggerrrrate that damned letter to take rrrrrevenge.

Elevator music: Emmet cannot sit still. He also cannot stay silent for long (unless something is seriously wrong with him). Hehas various tunes, lullabies and songs he breaks into when he is in his 'stand-by' mode. One of those tunes were lovingly nicknamed the battle subway theme, and made into reality by the depot agents for the anniversary of the battle subway's opening.

Idle animation: Wheeeeze. Look, if he is not in rush, he is going to dance as he makes way to his destination. Emmet is a happy man, and a passionate dancer (he and Ingo used to take classes before the whole Hisui incident happened). He likes combinations and making most of his time. So, if you see the subway boss in white electro swinging his way to Ingo's line to annoy his brother, welcome to the gear station :)

The instrumental Street Mix is my preferred mix but here's the vocal. The Rapologists changed their name to Universal Funk, central to them was Herbie Laidley of the Mastermind hip hop sound system who mixed many of the Street Sounds Electro albums

Family Quest & Automation - Outer Space 84 Rap b-side to an electro version of Atmostphere's Dancing In Outta Space. In 1986 Family Quest won the King Of The Streets competition on Mike Allen’s legendary Capital Radio show, their vocals flip between American accents and London

As you can hear rap at this time sounded quite different in the UK, France, and Italy. In the UK an effort not to sound like our American cousins was already beginning. The UK had a strong sound system culture and the Saxon DJs like Papa Levi were developing a distinct British voice, over the next decade the same would happen in UK rap. Some bright person could write a PHD about the development of rap in Europe and each European countries relationship with the US, immigration, and their colonial pasts. Perhaps because the UK has a rather weak cultural identity that UK rap imitated the US more closely? The early 1980s was the time of race riots so it’s easy to imagine the appeal of African American culture over the Black British experience for young brits

There were a few novelty or spoof rap records put out in the UK in 1984, like The Baron Knights' Churchill Rap. In the British music hall tradition we have spoken interludes to dip into which you can hear in Noël Coward and becomes the whole of Rex Harrison performance of Why Can't The English? in the musical My Fair Lady, it's the mixture of these two traditions Pet Shop Boys and The Flying Lizards tap into. Music hall songs also used call and response with audiences

I’m bending the rules a little for I am spotifyless. The songs were randomly selected from arbitrary sections of what barely counts as a playlist (it was never organized properly because I often manually select tracks to get from emotion A to emotion B). The list is under the cut because I had fun with the commentary. It has hyperlinks for convenience.

STUDIO LICO — ALL-IN (TILL.ver). The power! The confidence boost! There is an unofficial mix of AKUGETSU’s (Till) and 6FU’s (Hyuna) versions that I also really like.

syudou — In the Back Room (cover by Erinys). Save me, strong female vocals. I know the song is about succumbing to despair, but pretending to sing and scream along brings me joy for some reason.

Ferry — 100 EPITAPHS. It’s a part of the Parties are for Losers story, and you can hear it in leitmotifs: The Mill close to the beginning, then Occam’s Razor, and STRIKE 3 in the last third. I associate it with grim determination and gloom of an industrial town. If anyone wants to talk about Ferry’s songs, I’m all ears.

Kate Bush — Running Up That Hill (cover by RichaadEB & Annapantsu). Save me, strong female vocals (2). 

Kensuke Ushio — Sweet Dreams (arrangement by Pandora Heaven). It feels like something important, inevitable, and potentially devastating is set in motion.

Indila — Love Story (piano cover by Penguin Piano). I love the original, but piano versions generally work better for the sad hours of the day. The sounds of nature in the background are a nice touch.

KOKIA — Fukurou (cover by Sati Akura). Soothing, gentle, and mysterious, almost a lullaby.

Hagali — Mizlecca. A medieval fantasy song in a fictional language that leaves my heart full of wonder and hope.

JACK MATE — JACK BET. This one was found through Zensen who has a lot more for electro swing enjoyers. There is an itch only this genre scratches sometimes. I like how playful and upbeat it sounds. 

Swingrowers — No Strings Attached. Some more electro swing.
