hey i’m dj crazy times. so enamored with this longwinded string of lyrics from barbara mason’s post-disco electro soul classic another man (1983)
“he was so desirable and it’s gonna be such a waste... you know when you think everything is in place and what you think you have is not what you really have at all because in my case what i thought i had was not an entire whole man but a facsimile thereof! wasn’t the clothing or nothing, you know i’m not...”
the hypnotic, spoken word quality of this run-on sentence about a woman discovering her husband’s affair with another man puts me in a trance.
Maddy O'Neal Takes Us Behind The Scenes At The Ogden Theatre
Hailing from Denver and leaning deep into her artistry, Maddy O’Neal has forged her own path in the ever-evolving bass scene. Fusing hypnotic drops of bass with magnetic electro-soul beats, she has not only cultivated a sound of her own but has taken the scene by storm.

Thoughts: If you look up information about Sudan Archives, you always see Britney Parks being credited as a violinist amongst her credits as an artist. The fact that this album features violin so sparingly was noticeable as a result. It’s there, but Parks doesn’t let that become a gimmick for her music, and I think that she shines as a musician in all other facets throughout this album. There are lots of themes of reflection from Parks, whether it be looking back at youth, past relationships, or just reflecting on her own growth. It’s not shackled to the past, but Parks seems to be taking lots of cues from her experiences as she forges a path forward in this album. Alongside this reflection comes confidence in herself; her wants and desires, her value and her abilities. Musically, this album floats across all different genres without ever really feeling settled into one, shifting between R&B, electropop, soul, gospel, and hip-hop, amongst others. It feels very much like an album driven by the kind of music that Parks wanted to make, and it showcases her versatility as an artist without feeling unfocused in the slightest.

*The opening to this song is a reference to a scene from the movie Phantom of the Paradise, in which the main character has his voice digitally modified and enhanced whilst performing his cantata. The antagonist of the film, Swan, is played by Paul Williams, who is featured on the track.

Thoughts: Moses Sumney’s voice is out of this world. Haunting, ethereal, delicate, but controlled with such subtlety. There’s plenty of vibrato, but there are also times where Sumney syncs the timbre of his voice to match the lead instruments in a song. Speaking of which, the instrumentation on this can be sparse or ambient at times, but grows to some powerful crescendos depending on the song. While there are some great brass, wind, and string features, there are also several moments where the synths mimic the live instrument sounds in a way that sounds familiar, but has an artificial tinge that feels off. I think this plays into the albums theme of love, or a lack thereof, as the loneliness and empty desires of the lyrics are supported by this music that feels fake to an extent, with the vocals often being isolated to reinforce that sense of loneliness. It’s a very melancholy listen, but it’s captivating and beautiful nonetheless.
