Gamification probably sounds like a bit of a scary word to parents when it’s used to talk about education. After all, these days kids spend no small amount of time in front of a screen and playing games, so I can kind of understand the reluctance when it comes to bringing those things into education too.
However, at the end of the day is gamification really any different from the gold star charts most of us used to have as kids? Like those, all the gamification of eLearnng does is play into people’s love for being rewarded. The incentive to level up in challenges and rake in the achievement points can be a surprisingly good way to motivate people to learn and to do so on a pretty regular basis. The feeling of accomplishment works wonders for giving us the incentive to try our best to do well.
I can this kind of strategy definitely works for me in any case.
Right now I’m in the middle of trying to learn French. I took French classes back in school and I can already say I’m feeling a thousand times more positive (and actually genuinely eager to study!) when I’m using the language app I downloaded than I ever did muddling my way through a textbook in school. The design of the app makes me want to study a bit every day because, well, I wouldn’t want to break my ‘daily streak’ would I? Especially not when I get a gem bonus for reaching my daily goal! I mean, I can quite literally see my ‘French Fluency’ climbing every single day.
So really I don’t think there’s all that much to worry about when it comes to the gamification of eLearning, anything that actually helps to get people excited about their education surely can’t be all that bad.
