Parklife (1994) and Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino (2018): What does it mean to be an album of the times?
At face value Blur’s third studio album Parklife, released in 1994, and Arctic Monkeys’ 2018 release Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, their sixth, are very very very different albums. One the Britpop classic, the other a widely divisive experimentation -- they don’t even seem like they could hang out in the same sentence together. Then what the fuck am I on about?
Both albums are individually iconic in the respective band’s discographies -- with Parklife Blur conquered the heights of the Britpop war and firmly cemented its place in British music history while TBH&C marked a pivotal turn in style for the Monkeys, which in my very humble non-musician opinion, will make it historic sometime in the future. If you have spent as much time as I have overthinking the lyrics and pondering over interviews of another British rock band you are hyperfixating on though, you might see something more connecting these two albums. Written about 20 years away from each other, in wildly different times, the two weirdly enough, have these faint threads tying in their themes and subject matters.
Damon Albarn, the principal author of Parklife, described the album to NME as, “a loosely linked concept album involving all these different stories. It's the travels of the mystical lager-eater, seeing what's going on in the world and commenting on it." Rings a bell? That’s extremely TBH&C coded! That one has often been called a concept album based on a luxury hotel and casino on the moon with various eccentric characters and their stories, wryly commenting on issues plaguing life in the 2010s.
Parklife was a kind of a study of middle class English life of the mid-90s. With an extremely catchy pop soundscape and cheeky-cockney-laced lyrics about London parks and bank holidays, it became a quintessential symbol of Cool Britannia. They say the album never took off in the States because it was so British. In the years since, however, the band has described it more as sarcastic critique rather than a celebration of Britishness. Going through the lyrics with a fine toothed comb with that in mind then, you can feel the impatience a bunch of 20s somethings were feeling with the ideal 9-to-5 picket fence lifestyle as well as exhaustion with the hedonistic decadence of youth in the backdrop of an unpopular Conservative-led economy in decline. A similar, if updated for 30 year olds in 2018, sentiment can be sensed in the absurd surrealism of the lyrics of TBH&C. What do you do when you are fed up with tribulations of life and the ghosts of mistakes you’ve made along the way-- you fuck off and escape into whimsy of science fiction.
The political context of the time when Parklife and Tranquility Base were released does matter. Opens up another perspective to reading the album. It’s quite a stretch but bear with me.
The 90s in the UK began with Thatcher resigning and the Conservative government which dominated the 80s, becoming increasingly unpopular. There was a recession plaguing the early years of the decade. Britpop happened smack dab in the middle of this, and it was all about reacting to grunge and shoegaze and bringing back what is essentially British back to its music scene. Oasis, Suede, Pulp, Elastica (Justine Frischmann is the queen of Britpop btw) -- and ofcourse, Blur, were reviving guitar pop, singing in working class accents and about working class life and bringing back memories of the Swinging Sixties. Though each drawing from a wide variety of influences, these bands were becoming the face of a wider movement in music, art and youth culture. The political scene took note.
In the mid-90s, the Labour Party led by Tony Blair quickly aligned itself with Britpop and Cool Britannia. Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn were being courted by politicians , label execs getting party membership invites, headlines went like “What’s the Story? Don’t vote Tory”. Britpop soon acquired nationalist undertones --- never forget Brett Anderson showing off his twinky waist with Union Jack in the background and “Yanks go home!” headline.
By the end of the 90s, when Britpop had begun crumbling, the economy had recovered and Tony Blair was in Downing Street.
TBH&C and the Monkeys in general, perhaps have less political currency. When they burst onto the scene with their Sheffield accents and garage rock riffs in the generally stable pre-2008 economic climate, the Arctic Monkeys did occupy the space in British pop culture left vacant by Blur and Oasis in the wake of post Britpop, at least for a time. Their debut broke the record of being the fastest selling one, which used to be held by Elastica previously. The Monkeys were indie rock darlings in the UK and with 2013’s AM, became darlings in the US (and Tumblr) as well. Tranquility Base though, came out in a whole different world.
2018 was a fucking atrocious time, to put it mildly. The world was in total freefall inching rapidly towards disaster, which ultimately culminated in the pandemic of 2020. Trump had been elected in 2016 and 2018 was arguably one of the peaks of his shitshow. Over in the UK, Theresa May and her Conservative Cabinet were deep in the quagmire of Brexit negotiations. (Gotta note that Turner has said he voted against leaving in the referendum. Albarn is of course, a very vocal critic of Brexit.) Right wing governments were coming into power everywhere it seemed like, the climate crisis took on a new sense of alarm among the larger public - and things only spiralled in the years following. I can’t think of another album which could accurately capture the sheer fatigue of seeing outrageous headline after headline, how desensitised we had all become, how disillusioned with life- in a mason jar like TBH&C has.
That’s what makes an album legendary doesn’t it? You listen to it and immediately remember what living at the time was like. Even if 1994 was 10 years before I was born.
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let’s look at the two albums a little more closely.
Some lyrics which give me very similar vibes:
sexual hedonism // start treatment (tbh&c) and girls & boys (parklife)
mundanity of relationships // four stars out of five (tbh&c) and end of century (parklife)
the performativeness of middle class activism/social work // tranquility base hotel and casino (tbh&c) and parklife (parklife)
losing friends and losing touch // the ultracheese (tbh&c) and badhead (parklife) - now these aren't really similar, but i feel a connection. in my bones trust me bro. the whole "i'll grin and bear with it" thing about badhead is very reminiscient of the sense of insouciance about life that haunts tbh&c....almost??
the myth of america // the ultracheese (tbh&c), golden trunks (tbh&) and magic america (parklife) - magic america is making fun of reagan era the american dream while a disillusionment with the glitz and glam of life in la is pretty much consistent throughout tbh&c
a pathological dependence on technology as escapism // jubilee (parklife) and start treatment (tbh&c) - digital cameras and the internet and tvs were taking baby steps into invading our daily lives back in 1994, and by 2018 we were all fully under the vice grip of tech addiction. this parallel i find particularly funny so.
astronomical references // far out (parklife) and star treatment (tbh&c) - alex james, the blur bassist wrote and sung far out about his love of space. it's a pretty nice parallel hey.
For the last one, let's talk about Tracy Jacks from parklife. I couldn't really draw a direct parallel with a song from the other album, but that song spiritually fits right in I feel. An average Joe in the throes of a midlife crisis, teethering so so close to the edge and one day just snaps - that's a character one would expect dwells in the lounge of the Tranquility Base Hotel to drown themselves in the decadence and escape from all their shit, when all is said and done.
Now what's the concluding point of all this rambling. I don't know lolz. Y'all just read a thousand words of nothing.
Just kidding. Actually I read somewhere Damon Albarn was inspired by the 1989 novel London Fields, a science-fiction adjacent black comedy set against the backdrop of an impending nuclear crisis, while writing Parklife. That kinda rung a bell. (Yes, I did wonder if Alex has read this)
I just wanted to see if we can find any interesting connections parrallels or references between Parklife and Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino. I dunno if I've been successful in getting any point across, or it's just pointless waffling on. But one thing that did get confirmed to me once again, these two albums are really the Albums of Their Times. Captures the zeitgeist in such a specific but unique in their own ways, it's really wonderful.
And also studying the legacy and impact of AM with reference to other musical outfits is always fun. I think we can all safely say that AM is well on their way to capturing a seat in the pantheon of great British bands, where somewhere in a corner Blur also sits. Damon Albarn is a fucking legend of course -- from the pretty posh boy of Britpop he has gone to becoming one of the most versatile, experimental and prolific songwriter/composer in the contemporary music scene. He is apparently working on the music for an Goethe's fragmented libretto of Magic Flute Part 2. How many rockstars do you know have composed operas - how fucking dope. I wanna hope that we'll get to see Alex exploring crazy paths in music like this, he definitely has the potential. This whole exercise would probably have made more sense with one of Damon's post-Blur works, his first solo record Everyday Robots or even Blur's last album The Magic Whip, but I started this essay so had to finish it.
Maybe another day eh.
#arctic monkeys#blur#tranquility base hotel and casino#parklife#lyric theory#extensive rambling#rolling stones or nme pls hire me i just wanna be paid to infodump and overthink about my favourite albums#damon albarn alex turner collab PLEASE i can't die without seeing one happen

Pulp play a game of Consequences Words: Johnny Cigarettes, Photographer: Stefan de Batselier Taken from the New Musical Express, 23/30 December 1995
Part Two [Part One here]
QUESTION FOR RUSSELL:
You go out on a first date with someone. At the end of the drunken evening they lean forward as if to whisper in your car. They then vomit all over you. What do you do? a) Ignore it and kiss them long and hard. b) Say, 'Even your vomit is beautiful.' c) Do the same to them as gesture of your newly shared intimacy.
Nick: I know quite a few people that's happened to, usually while dancing intimately. The worst one was actually shagging someone and they vomited into their mouth! I don't think they had a second date.
Steve: I think Russell would be very offended and slap them.
Candida: Yeah, he'd be outraged, and plan to get them back in some very cruel manner.
Russell: I think I would perhaps not see them again. Heh! Heh!
Candida: He would have to do more than that.
Russell: No, but I don't really have any experience of that situation. In the ten years I've been seeing my girlfriend, I don't think I've ever even heard her fart. A better man than I would probably see the erotic potential in a situation like that, but it's a bit gross for me to handle.
Steve: Well, once a philosopher, twice a pervert. (Eh? - Ed.)
QUESTION FOR JARVIS:
You discover a lover's diary in a drawer. What do you do? a) Control your curiosity and respect their privacy. (Steve: Have you read any of our lyrics? Nick: Forge a career out of it!) b) Make detailed notes to be used in any future argument. c) Go through it and change any bits you don't agree with.
Steve: Following on from the song 'I Spy' on our album, I think Jarvis would look at it, use it as a means of revenge, but feel very guilty about it. Then write a song about it! Ha ha ha!
Candida: I'm not sure, I think it might be (a).
Russell: Yes, Jarvis is quite a moral person, isn't he?
Steve: You've everything to lose and nothing to gain. You could find out if they love you, which you think anyway, or you could find out that you're a vacuum of a person and crap in bed. But I still think natural curiosity would get the better of him.
Jarvis: I greatly appreciate the (a) votes. But I know that I wouldn't be able to stop myself. I would feel bad about it, but I know I would do it. Bad isn't it? It'd backfire on you, I reckon. It's a nasty side to human nature.
Steve: I once sat on the loo with a girl's diary, because I thought it was a private place. But she sussed me out somehow, and nearly broke the door down trying to get me out. Didn't do any good in the long term.
Russell: It's like driving past an accident. I actually had a similar thing with one of Jarvis' letters. I opened it, not realising it was a personal letter and read the first bit, started skimming for the juicy bits and then I managed to stop myself.
Jarvis: Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
Steve: What's that you said about never lying, Russell?
QUESTION FOR STEVE:
A stranger offers you £1,000 to deliver a small parcel to an address in a seedy part of town. Cash on delivery. What do you do? a) Refuse, and report the incident to the police immediately. b) Refuse but feel as if you have passed up on the chance of a lifetime. c) Secretly nick a bit of the package's contents for yourself, then enjoy spending the easiest £1,000 you'll ever make.
Russell: I think he'd look for the nearest mirror and razor blade.
Nick: Perhaps you could sell the package yourself, assuming it was worth a lot more than £1,000, and then set up your own small business!
Steve: No, I'd get Richard (Pulp road manager) to get a bike courier on Savage And Best's account (Pulp publicists), and then bike the money safely back to me.
Russell: You should be OK, though, because the seedy address is quite likely to be your house, actually! Someone delivering it to Justin - from Elastica - Steve's flatmate. Is this all incestuous enough for you? Ha ha ha ha!
QUESTION FOR RUSSELL:
You are at a dinner party where the dog keeps trying to copulate with your leg. The host is turning a blind eye. What do you do? a) Grin and bear it. b) Discreetly hit the dog hard on the head with a soup spoon. C) Explain to the dog that you don't believe in sex between species.
Russell: We had a similar scenario recently when the next door neighbour's dog attempted to crap on our garden. As it was squatting I kicked it in the nuts.
Candida: Aw, you are horrible.
Russell: Not hard! But it got the message across, so that's what I'd do this time.
Nick: But surely you could make a dog trying to shag your leg an amusing part of the dinner party festivities?
Russell: I don't think I'd see the erotic or the humorous potential.
Nick: Don't you believe in sex between species, then?
Russell: Well, in your case I might make an exception...
QUESTION FOR JARVIS FROM STEVE:
You find that you have become one of the greatest songwriters of your generation. What do you do? a) Have a wank... (Er - that's enough of this one.)
QUESTION FOR JARVIS:
You are staying at a guest-house and you wake to find yourself stark naked on the landing. What do you do? a) Hide in the bathroom until you can get someone to fetch you some clothes. b) Using a nearby painting as protection, you go and get help. c) Run through the corridors shouting 'Party'.
Candida: I think it's definitely (a).
Russell: Or perhaps steal a rug off the wall.
Nick: Yeah, any interesting '70s rug from the wall of a guesthouse in Norwich. Ha ha ha! (This series of events is obviously entirely fictitious.)
Jarvis: No, I would definitely hide in the bathroom because they're likely to have towels in there, and even if you were naked you could pretend you'd just had a shower or something. I certainly wouldn't want to parade around the place in my birthday suit.
Russell: Not even now you're a sex symbol?
Jarvis: No, there'd probably be a spy from the Mirror there, and they'd put me naked on the front page. 'Jarvis in nude sex romp! Ban this sick c-!'
Nick: Imagine that over your cornflakes. F-ing hell! Ha ha ha!
And there we must leave it, having perused far more of Pulp's dirty underwear than any sane human being could ever need to. Legal requirements dictate we must allow our quarries to wander off into the night wreaking destruction, depravity and degradation on a generation of innocent pop kids. And kids, next time you're in bed with your loved one, remember to check the wardrobe...
(Pulp were playing the magnificent Consequences game, available from all good toy shops now.)

MSP asks: 27, 31, 46, 52 please ✌️✨
Oh, wow
27. give us an unpopular opinion on something
I really don't want to be rude or insult someone, but Nicky really isn't that precious. I mean I love him very much but mostly he confuses and scares me. I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion or not.
31. have the Manics ever influenced your fashion choices?
Yes! But I'm not influenced by their GT or New Art Riot eras, I only have a black fur coat 'from those times'. I prefer something from THB and GATS and it mostly Richey's looks. I just like killing people with my coolness and coldness instead of glitter and glam.😌
46.how long have you been a fan? how did you get into them?
I've been a fan for two years.
In Russia we have this social media called 'VK', it's like Facebook but more user-friendly. And I am subscribed on a group named ".д" that posts music, playlists, information about bands, tumblr posts etc. And one day there was a post with a song 'Die In The Summertime', it's translation and photos of Richey and Nicky on their first NME cover (you know, when Richey carved "VIH", Nicky wrote 'culture slut' and there was a golden material). So I was fascinated by how they looked (also at first I thought that Richey was a girl) then I read the lyrics and listened to song. And I completely fell in love in 3 minutes.🙃
52.any other artists you listen to besides MSP?
There is a lot of!! So I list my most-listened and favourite: The Clash, Echo and the Bunnymen, Ezra Furman, Suede, Blur, The Strokes, The Libertines, early Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett, Elastica, Blondie, X-Ray Spex, The Smiths, Dead Kennedys, The Rolling Stones, Avatar, Joy Division, My Dad Is Dead, all 90sgrunge except Soundgarden, zavet, Nautilus Pompilius, Хаски (there are some Russian bands). So classics. =)
Thank you so much for asking! Hope I answered well. ✌🌸

music asks: 5, 9, 10, 14, 17, 20, 25, 32, 35, 41, 43, 49, 50, 56
5. what do you think the best popular song of the year is so far?
i rarely listen to top 40 anymore but uhh i thought the finesse remix with cardi b and bruno mars was really good. oh and this is america by childish gambino is easily one of the best songs of the year so far.
(apparently humility by gorillaz also charted on the hot 100 so that too i guess)
9. album of the year?
hard to say yet but contenders include: virtue - the voidz, isolation - kali uchis, tranquility base hotel and casino - arctic monkeys, always ascending - franz ferdinand, dirty computer - janelle monae, and 7 - beach house
10. what are the best songs your parents have gotten you into?
really the extent of my parents’ knowledge of music is cambodian music that they never remember the name of and my dad’s love for old 80s hits so: sweet dreams - eurythmics, just be good to me - sos band, little lies - fleetwood mac, the tide is high - blondie, and hungry like the wolf - duran duran
14. if someone asks you what music they should check out, what are your go-to recommendations?
it really depends on what im feeling at the moment and what i know about the other person’s music taste. i usually don’t like, casually recommend someone to listen to one of my favorite bands of all time or something unless they ask specifically about it or im confident that they’d like it because like idk i guess i find sharing stuff like that to be very vulnerable.
17. what are your favorite songs that have ever been popular?
somebody told me - the killers
someday - the strokes
friday im in love - the cure
common people - pulp
blue monday - new order
20. what was your first concert? if you haven’t been to one, what do you want your first concert to be?
it was the 1975 at mohegan sun arena on november 5, 2016, which was the day after my fourteenth birthday. i cant remember much from it now but it was a ton of fun, god the light set up was phenomenal and my mother seemed to enjoy matt healy’s dancing a lot.
25. what is your singing voice like? what singers do you remind yourself of?
oof i kinda hate my singing voice so uhh idk. i usually like making my voice as loud and commanding and bright as possible so i tend to sing a lot more in a chest voice when im alone. idk i think i sound very much like what your average 15 year old girl who happens to not be tone deaf would sound like. i guess make of that what u will because to compare myself to other singers would be doing a huge disservice to them.
32. how do you feel about musicals?
oh i definitely used to be a musical person. i very much used to be that 13 year old who was into heathers the musical and hamilton and stuff like that. i guess ive grown out of being so invested in them, and i havent really properly listened to one in quite a while but im definitely not like against them or anything.
35. what are your favorite songs/soundtracks from movies?
i dont watch movies too often and my memory’s the worst so all i can think of is the trainspotting soundtrack. the best songs off of that imo are sing by blur, temptation by new order, and 2:1 by elastica.
41. do you prefer songs that have good melodies or songs that have good lyrics?
i mean ideally i’d like both of course, but i guess lately ive been kind of finding myself more invested in the sonic side of things. if a song that has a great hook has some mediocre lyrics, i’ll more often than not let it slide i guess. which doesnt mean i dont care at all about lyrics or dont appreciate them, it’s just as ive been consuming more and more music my overall enjoyment of a song has started to depend less and less on whether a song has the most quality lyrics or not.
43. name five songs you like that were released at least 50 years ago.
the night before - the beatles
venus in furs - velvet underground
this guy’s in love with you - herb alpert and the tijuana brass
the times they are a changin’ - bob dylan
hush - deep purple
49. what are your favorite album covers?
pretty odd, wpsiamtwin, definitely maybe, sgt peppers
50. any cover versions that you think are better than the original?
katy on a mission - arctic monkeys
start today - fall out boy
hallelujah - jeff buckley
i am the walrus - oasis
56. if you had a stage name, what would it be?
actually my full name’s relatively short and simple (it’s the same # of syllables as something like “sandra dee”) so i always figured that if i ever decided to become famous i probably wouldnt have to do anything to it
