One interesting thing that can happen in long running media is that the general cultural background can shift under the work, recontextualizing it as it is being written. I'm specifically thinking of the Order of the Stick, a Dungeons and Dragons themed webcomic that started in 2003 with the titular party of adventurers going through a dungeon.
Tumblr media
From left to right, we have Belkar Bitterleaf the halfling ranger, Vaarsuvius the Elf Wizard, Elan the Human Bard, Haley Starshine the Human Rogue, Durkon Thundershield the Dwarf Cleric, and Roy Greenhilt the Human Fighter. The comic takes place in a fantasy setting that knowingly runs off the rules of Dungeons and Dragons third edition. Characters talk about rolls and bonuses and intentionally take levels in various classes. At the start, the comic was a pretty basic gag comic about the D&D rules, basic fantasy/adventure tropes, ect.
In the 20 years the comic has been running, it has updated about 1300 times, not counting bonus strips exclusively made for the printed version, and several print (or PDF) only side and prequel stories. It has also dramatically grown from it's roots, the art has improved while keeping the same general aesthetic, and the gag-a-day comic has become a sweeping fantasy epic. The characters have grown beyond their initial bits (Belkar is a Murderhobo, Elan is stupid, Haley is greedy, ect), and it's genuinely up there as one of my favorite stories. But anyway, let's talk about Vaarsuvius. If you look at the above art, You'll notice that the characters tend to have three types of body shapes: Rectangles for Roy, Belkar, and Elan, feminine curves for Haley, and Robes for Vaarsuvius. This presentation is a pretty consistent signifier of gender and/or somebody wearing robes. Early on, part of Vaarsuvius's running gag became their ambiguous gender. At the time, it was a fairly common joke in fantasy to talk about how Elven men had androgynous or "Girly" appearances, so V was part of that. Instead of a singular pronoun, characters would generally just abbreviate Vaarsuvius's name as "V", and whenever the narrative would have naturally provided some indication of gender one way or another, V would resolve the situation without providing any such indication. For example, an early gag has the characters seeking out a set of modern style bathrooms in the dungeon. When they find them, V says that their "More Efficient elven biology" means they don't have to go yet, so they wait outside while the boys go into the Men's room and Haley waits in the inevitable long line at the women's. When Vaarsuvius reveals that they are married, they use the term "Spouse" to refer to their partner, when we see their children, the children are clearly adopted (V and their partner both have pale skin, their children have darker skin) and refer to Vaarsuvius as "Parent". Vaarsuvius themselves seems to have trouble identifying other people by gender. Characters outside the central cast might refer to Vaarsuvius as "He" or "She", but doing so was always shedding light on that character's perspective, rather than saying anything about Vaarsuvius. The assumption behind the gag is that Vaarsuvius must be either male or female, and the joke is that the narrative/Vaarsuvius themselves keeps finding ways to avoid "Revealing" their gender. Fan wikis and official books list Vaarsuvius's gender as "Ambigious" and on the forum there used to be a regular, multi-part thread dedicated to debatings Vaarsuvius's gender, even after the author declared that it would "never be revealed".
Anyway, going back to the start, it's 2023, and something shifted at some point, both in the comic and in the general cultural background. The jokes about V's gender kind of fell off, not just because the gag got played out, but because the basic assumption behind it simply doesn't work anymore. Everybody knows that Nonbinary people exist. There's no point in the comic where Vaarsuvius switches from being "Ambigiously Gendered" to Nonbinary, in fact, the entire comic reads just fine if you read Vaarsuvius as male or female and just not caring enough to clarify their gender to anybody and at some point other characters just stop thinking about it. But it's interesting to see how a character trait that was once included in even the most basic character descriptions (Varsuvius: Elven Wizard. Arrogant, Intelligent. Ambigiously gendered) just kind of got washed away by a rising tide of cultural nuance towards gender. Also go read OOTS, it's pretty great.

Zippity Zow! The Wacky Comeback of the Concept Album.
Tumblr media
With the news that both LMM and Eisa Davis are going to be spending this year predominantly working on the Broadway adaptation of the Warriors concept album, it's gotten me to really think about the art of the concept album.
A concept album isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s a complete story, woven together through lyrics, sounds, and recurring motifs. Unlike your average soundtrack, which often serves as a backdrop, a concept album invites you to dive deeper, asking why certain choices were made and how the musicality enhances the narrative. Once a celebrated art form, the concept album has become a rarity, a fading craft that challenges listeners to experience music as more than just entertainment, but as an intricate and intentional work of storytelling.
It’s a real loss, especially when you consider Broadway’s deep ties to the concept album—a format that has given us some of theater’s most groundbreaking works. *Jesus Christ Superstar* began as a concept album, with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice experimenting to see if heavy metal could thrive in a theatrical setting. *Hamilton* was nearly released as a concept album before it transformed into a full-scale musical. And *Hadestown,* now a beloved Broadway classic, started as a raw, evocative concept album that laid the groundwork for its stage success. The concept album has long been a proving ground for innovation in musical theater, making its decline all the more bittersweet.
One of the beauties of a concept album is the freedom it gives you to imagine the story however you like, offering a level of creative engagement that most other mediums can’t match. This is especially evident in fan-made animatics, such as those inspired by Hamilton or more recently Epic: The Musical. These animatics use the songs as a foundation, enhancing them with stunning animation and storyboarding to bring new dimensions to the narrative. In some ways, this approach can achieve things that a traditional Broadway production can’t, unshackled from the constraints of budget or practicality, allowing the story to soar in ways limited only by imagination.
The reassuring thing is that at least thanks to the after mention epic and the grand topic of this thesis, the Warriors concept album it seems like the idea is at least being introduced to a newer generation of people.
One of the things I love most about The Warriors is how the cast is constantly reused in inventive ways, adding layers to the story through subtle connections. For example, Sasha Hushings, who plays Cowgirl, also provides the stepping for the Griffs during Lady Cyrus's introduction, seamlessly blending roles.
Another standout detail is Elan from the Hurricanes, whose haunting voice warns, “Folks go missing at the park at night.” Not only does this emphasize the impact the Hurricanes left on the Warriors, but it also foreshadows Ajax's downfall and Fox's eventual fate.
There’s also the chilling moment in Derailed, where Lin-Manuel Miranda, Colman Domingo, Lin’s sons, and the actors voicing the other gangs become the eerie screams of the converted—a haunting touch that amplifies the tension.
Even the cops’ distinctive “Yooo-Hooo” whistle serves a dual purpose: it mimics the sound of police sirens and symbolizes their taunting, predatory nature, making them feel like hunters circling their prey. These layers of detail elevate the experience, making the world of The Warriors feel immersive and meticulously crafted.
I could go on about the little intricacies, but I think you guys get my drift.
It's going to be really fulfilling to see the Warriors come to life on stage considering the film is known for its visual finesse, however I am going to miss that element of imagination you get by just imagining how things play out especially since we've been stuck with the album for a little over several months now.

So I wrote a review on Highway Blossoms a while back, but it was kind of. unfinished. a conversation with a friend of mine inspired me to finish it up, though, so here's the results of that. putting under a readmore for obvious reasons.
Highway Blossoms is a yuri visual novel released by Studio Elan in 2016, with a remaster in 2019, and DLC in 2020. The game follows the story of 2 girls, Amber and Marina, as they go on an adventure across the American Southwest in order to discover a long-lost Miner’s Treasure. While it starts off as a goofy adventure story, it slowly morphs into a poignant story about grief, relationships, and letting go. It’s one of my favorite yuri VNs, and its southwestern setting combined with its realistic characters caused me to heavily connect to its story.
Highway Blossoms starts off simply. Amber, a 19 year old woman on her way to a music festival in Palm Springs, ends up picking up a hitchhiker, Marina, whose car has run out of gas. She drives her to the gas station, where she learns of her goal. To find the Miner’s Treasure, the location of which is detailed in a journal. Amber believes it’s a scam, and plans to drop Marina off at her car after hearing about it. However, Marina’s car has been stolen, with her phone and wallet along with it. Amber offers to drive her back to her home of Carlsbad, New Mexico, but she declines, and asks Amber to instead take her to the first site of the treasure. There, they meet the three supporting characters and rivals, Mariah, Joe, and Tess, who are also searching for the treasure. (and who also were the ones to steal and scrap Marina’s car.) After some arguing, Marina and Amber secure equipment and find the first piece of the treasure, starting off an epic road trip across the Southwestern US.
The characters in Highway Blossoms are what make the game, it being a romance novel. The two leads, Marina and Amber, are wonderfully written, with their personalities being explored across the course of the game’s 4-5 hour runtime. Amber is a blunt, sarcastic skeptic, though she quickly grows a soft side for Marina’s antics, though she still has her own problems with being stuck too far in her own head. Marina is a stifled kid looking for freedom from her large family, though it’s clear she isn’t fully mature yet. Together, they make a wonderful duo, bouncing off of each other beautifully, and their developing romance feels incredibly genuine despite the short timeframe.
The supporting cast is a bit lacking in the original release, but with the release of the Next Exit DLC in 2020, we got a much more in-depth look into their personalities, motivations, and backstories, which made me really care about the lovable goofballs. Joe is an almost impossibly chill man, able to go with the flow no matter what. He has his own reservations, but typically he’s the logic of the group, and sticks with Mariah and Tess despite Mariah’s personality. Mariah is a control freak, an alcoholic, and a generally unpleasant person. However, despite that, she drags her sister and best friend across the country in search of treasure, stealing, lying, and cheating her way out of most situations. Despite all of that, she’s got a good heart, deep down. (and I mean really deep down. Like down to the ocean floor, and keep digging.) Tess is a small girl with emotional issues, through the DLC heavily implied to have autism or a similar mental condition. Despite her lack of personality, she manages to form a sweet friendship with Marina postgame, which is mostly the focus of the Next Exit DLC.
With the characters out of the way, the story itself is also something to focus on. It can feel very unfocused at times, bouncing between irreverent comedy, serious drama, and cheesy romance, but in a way, the erratic nature of the game reflects the erratic nature of life. What’s important most of all is not Highway Blossoms’ tone itself, but the ability to keep its emotional core intact, which it does beautifully. While more cartoonish than most characters, the cast feel like humans as much as they do characters, contrasting their wacky antics with down to earth moments that make you feel for them.
Overall, the Studio Elan lineup is generally very strong, but their first game is especially one people should keep their eyes on. A heartfelt tale of love and loss, a goofy comedy adventure, and a beautiful story all around, Highway Blossoms is a visual novel I have not stopped thinking about since i played it for the first time all the way back in 2022, and it is one I will continue to think about for a long time.

My Eventual Writeblr Intro Post
(It's only taken me how many years to do an intro post?)
Hi, I'm Laura VAB. I make my imaginary friends fight each other for my personal amusement.
I write fantasy in several flavors (and some non-fiction, too, but that's probably less relevant here) and occasionally I dabble in other genres. I do a fair amount of epic fantasy, and some of my stuff, long and short, has won awards.
I usually have some free or 99c stories on my website, such as:
She Speaks In Flames (historical fantasy)
Wight Christmas (valkyrie Mrs. Claus takes names)
A Red Banner To Fly (historical fiction, not fantasy, at Japan's Battle of Dan no Ura)
A Midwinter Theft (short set in upcoming epic fantasy world)
Neon Green in D Minor (cyberpunk Pied Piper short)
Good Spell Gone Bug (urban fantasy comedy of magic gone wrong)
Free Fiction Sampler (taste it all!)
(Psst! You can use the code WRITEBLR to get a 99c story for free!)
An abducted Greek girl ends up in Asgard, telling her own Greek myths to entertain the Norse gods -- until one of her stories leads to murder.
My published epic fantasies include The Songweaver's Vow, which has a shiny gold sticker on the cover to say that more than just my mom liked it.
Tumblr media
And I also have the Shard of Elan epic fantasy series, in which an outcast soldier can save his only friend's life, if he sacrifices the people he swore to protect.
Tumblr media
I also have a Japanese historical fantasy series and stories about magical women in WW2 and all kinds of stuff.
My newsletter is the best way to keep up and get previews, discounts, and free stuff. I'm also on various social media, which you can find from my website.
More about me?
I am a professional animal trainer, and I teach professional and trainers around the world about positive reinforcement. (Yes, for humans, too!)
My work always, no matter the genre or setting, features someone finding agency and hope where they thought they had little or none. The world may be gritty, but the story offers hope. (There's also a lot of the found family trope!)
I'm a professional member of the SFWA and other writers' organizations, but that's just a membership card or four. I self-publish my long-form work and self-publish or sell traditionally my short-form work.
Most of my stuff sits at the PG or PG-13 level, if we borrow the MPAA scale. I'm always happy to provide a content guide, if anyone has questions.
I love research and history, and I love to speak at cons or libraries or other events about Japanese history or myths about Norse folklore and all kinds of stuff.
I've had a lot of experience pitching and querying, and a lot of self-publishing time, so feel free to ask questions!

I would say that Vaarsuivius has had a real redemption arc. V has done all the redemption things. "Acknowledge their crimes, reevaluate their actions, actively choose to do better, and then proceed to make amends and become a better person."
Theres no real making amends since V killed a bunch of people. Arguably making amends could include not contesting the divorce that resulted, though. The only plot-relevant person we know of who was directly affected and still alive is Tarquin, whose ninth wife Penelope was killed.
... okay now I want to see that. I want V to apologize to Tarquin. And not just because it would be good story material, or because she Should. V should do it because she WOULD. If V doesn't I'll assume it was done offscreen. But I want to SEE it. I want to see how TARQUIN reacts to that.
There are so many ways he could react. So, so many. Like, "you did WHAT" when he hears about Familicide. The sheer power V wielded. (How petty his own anger at Roy outshining Elan was.) Maybe he'd reconsider his own ways. Maybe we could get a redemption arc for TARQUIN. That would be something indeed. Possibly even more powerful than V's own. (I love the cascading lesson of selflessness from Sigdi Thundershield to Durkon to Belkar, this could be smth similar.)
Also, the Evilness of it. Tarquin is Evil. Apologizing to him for an Evil deed is more likely for him to go "oh fr?? That slays queen!" Followed by "What, are you apologizing?? Why?? That's mega-epic! Sooo dramatic!" And then "what even are you? Good? Evil? Neutral? Does the alignment system account for repentance?? DID you get in some good old-fashioned brooding? Can you give Elan some tips, he seems averse to his destiny"
And V just. Leaves. Roy gives V a look and V is like. "I articulated that which I came to convey. His response is not within the parameters of my control, nor does it define the validity of my repentance."
Anyway it would be great. My crude fanfiction cannot do the actual thing justice.
There's a huge difference between redemption and humanization. I feel like a lot of "redemption arcs" aren't actually redemption at all, they're just attempts to humanize the villain so that they seem multi-faceted, but people read them as "redemption arcs" and think that that is meant to justify all the evil they've done before and negate whatever made them a villain in the first place. I think true "redemption arcs" are actually kind of rare because true redemption would take making the villain acknowledge their crimes, reevaluate their actions, actively choose to do better, and then proceed to make amends and become a better person, and that would this take more time than most stories are allowed to give their characters.
I've also seen people argue that a character has to be poised for redemption from the jump for it to work because once a character does something "too bad", they can't be redeemed. I completely disagree because redemption isn't justification or forgiveness, so no matter how horrible a character's actions, they could choose to become better, but because a lot of people (including writers) think redemption means "erasing the character's flaws and making it so they did nothing wrong ever", a lot of attempted "redemption arcs" just end up erasing a character's entire history or justifying every evil thing they've ever done. And yeah, in these cases, the only way to make a character go from a villain to a perfect cinnamon roll with no flaws *is* to have been planning it from the beginning and make sure they never do anything that can't be explained away later.
TLDR: real redemption arcs require a lot of self-awareness, patience, and growth, which are things that are rarely actually allocated to villains, and that's why real redemption arcs almost never get executed. The reason people think redemption arcs are overdone is because there are so many attempts to either humanize a villain that get misconstrued as redemption or attempts to blatantly erase who a character was in the name of "redemption", which is really just poor character development.
