🤲🏻@elmuseo announces 𝘌𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘔𝘖𝘚 𝘉𝘐𝘌𝘕: 𝘓𝘈 𝘛𝘙𝘐𝘌𝘕𝘈𝘓 𝟸𝟶/𝟸𝟷, the museum’s first national large-scale survey of #Latinx contemporary art featuring more than 40 artists from across the United States and #PuertoRico. Curated by @rodrigoemoura and @svtemkin from El Museo del Barrio and featuring as guest curator, New York-based artist @asahinyc. ⁣ This first iteration of #LaTrienal borrows its title, 𝘌𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘔𝘖𝘚 𝘉𝘐𝘌𝘕, from the work of participating artist @candida_alvarez_studio, a former member of El Museo’s curatorial team in the 1970s and the only artist in the show with a previous exhibition history with the institution. ⁣ ⁣ Alvarez’s painting 𝘌𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘺 𝘉𝘪𝘦𝘯 (2017) takes its title from the resilient and obliquely sarcastic response to the aftermath of #HurricaneMaria in Puerto Rico. Now pluralized, the phrase resonates with the present-day moment, as the works in the exhibition address issues of race and identity politics, gentrification and displacement, climate change, as well as the particular effects of the global pandemic to Latinx and other BIPOC populations. ⁣ ⁣ This landmark exhibition demonstrates El Museo del Barrio’s commitment to championing the voices, stories and lived experiences of Latinx artists in the United States. Congratulations to artists Juan Sánchez and Marina Gutierrez on being inducted into the Cooper Union Alumni Hall of Fame! Sanchez’s faceted glass installation “Reaching Out for Others” (2006) at the 176th Street (4) station uses hands in many colors to convey the universal symbol of people reaching out and striving. Tapping into early MTA Arts & Design poster commissions, Sánchez’s “Harlem” (1994) poster uses collage to portray the spirit of Harlem and Marina Gutierrez’s “El Museum Del Barrio” (1993) poster draws on the cultural riches that can be found at El Museo Del Barrio.

The East Village Poetry walk, an audio walk scheduled prior to my lunch with apexart founder, Steven Rand. I had a hardcopy given to me along with my schedule and all I had to do was download the Passing Stranger. The background context that sets the scene is by poet and critic Daniel Kane, that situates the walking tour in East Village, from Bowery in the West to Avenue C, and so on, till the Bowery poetry club. The audio included popular and key figures of the East Village poetry scene, as well as historical audio from poets. Everything was lovely about that walk, it was timed quite accurately, considering the speed at one may walk, this one was calm and slow, made you stay in places to absorb the context better, but I really wish the map was more detailed for people who are not familiar with the city. It is recommended to anyone who happens to be in that area and has a couple of hours to spare and the lovely graffiti you find on the way.

After the audio walk I made my way to 291 Church Street, apexart gallery, to catch up with Steven over lunch. On my way, I was going over my first meeting with Steven and recalling the month long schedule that had almost come to an end, the highlights of the trip, what all resonated with me and possibly where I was at after the experience. It was suddenly a lot to process, since I had literally been taking it a day at a time, an activity at a time, without really carrying this forward or worry about the next. It had been slightly drizzling all morning, the city that had been brightly lit and calmed through the month and had started seeming a little grey with chance of heavy rain. By the time I reached apexart my mind had already starting drawing a black and decided it was too much to process and that there was no point in going over things and would take it from there. Steven and I, walked over a couple of blocks looking for a place to have lunch, we found a little cafe, casual, drew a crowd - they served sandwiches and Steven hadn’t eaten here before - so it seemed like the perfect place to sit down and chat. Our meeting though have been a few, our conversations seemed to have been endless, about some many things. Talking with Steven makes you question and at the same time leaves me with reassurance.

I was meant to meet Zeelie for tea since our dance class had been cancelled. We sat in this amazing little zen tea house. Tea Drunk, “a romantic expression used to describe one’s indulgence in true passion”.  Our meeting was very brief, since he had a meeting to catch and I had been delayed because heavy rainfall. 

My last stop for the night was the ‘Uptown Bounce 2019, Emerging Latinx Identities’, by the Museum of the City of New York, at the top of Museum Mile. Where emerging and avant-garde artists explore, unpack and deconstruct new paradigms in identity and its expression in their communities.

Puppet Tuesday! We made the news! (a couple times- 😃— there’s not an emoji that accurately describes my beaming smile). Camilla the Camel alongwith Maude the Sheep, Gerald Abt on #stilts and Annette Aguilar and her fantastic String Bean Bloco - @dlaregthethird @aaabeans - for #puppettuesday | Performing a #puppet in a #parade is one of the most exhilarating ways to parade. Making kids and adults laugh as you interact with them is tops in my book. We danced, we bounced, Maude let tiny tots pat her on the back while Camilla kissed a few parade-goers and may have stuck her nose in a car or two. Walking Tour

I did something I should have done in the first place when I picked out this apartment, I walked around the area. Previously I had only focused on the site with the public housing buildings because that was the route I took to get to the apartment. But after walking around literally one block over on the other side it blew my mind. I’m in a super calm area that has a ridiculous amount of stuff to do and is fairly close to several subway stops. I’m really looking forward to trying out this weekend brunch at this place around the corner which is actually El Museo del Barrio.
