Between the Barrier

It was a quiet afternoon for Ryan as he sat in the living room of his house by himself as he usually did when he waited for Eira to return. He had his headphones in and scrolled around on his phone as he tried to stay warm from the cold weather outside. That was until he saw the front door come flying open as Eira came in, talking on the phone while trying to remain calm and stifle her apparent excitement.

“No.. yeah I understand, don’t worry. How long has it been just him and me now? You know I’ll keep good care of him… Really?? Oh my god.. thank you so much.. We love you too, bye,” Eira hung up the phone as she closed the door and put her stuff down then jogged to the living room. She leapt over the couch and sat next to Ryan.

“Um hi? I never see you with this much energy at the end of the day,” Ryan said as he pulled his headphones down.

“Well, Ryan. There’s uh big news; we’re going to Yumemi,” She said eagerly.

“What? All the way over there? Wha- uh how?” He asked.

“So as you know I won first in the local skating competition. They liked me so much that they want me at another big competition going on over there I guess. And how could I refuse?” Eira explained.

“No yeah, that’s great! Congratulations, Eira” Ryan said as they hugged shortly.

“Start packing your bag. We’re leaving in a couple days,” she said.

“Do mom and dad know? What did they say?” He asked.

“I just got off the phone with them and they said they were totally cool and that they’d be watching from the tv. Ah Ryan this is big. And I’ll be using your original songs, you’re getting your publicity,” Eira chimed. Ryan paused a moment as he could only just look at her.

“Really?” He finally asked.

“Of course. You gave those to me, why would I ever stop using them?” She said. Ryan ever so slightly began to get misty eyed as a smirk came to his face. “Aw Ryan don’t give me that or you’ll make me cry too,” Eira said as she quickly pulled him into a tight hug. “Hey I just might use one you sang with Macey. I know what you guys have been up to and your new experiments so I’d really like to use one. Just- just bring all your music. Speaking of which, why not call her and invite her to come? The officials of the competition are waiting on me to call them to see how many tickets they should get for us. It would be fun,” Eira said as she nudged his shoulder.

“As much as a good idea it is, I hm can’t. Macey’s on vacation with her parents. She hardly sees them so they took her on vacation to spend time together,” Ryan explained as he showed a picture of Macey holding a peace sign with a bright beach behind her.

“Oh that’s ok, next time then,” Eira said as she stood from the couch and ruffled his hair. “We’re staying over there for a week. Our own personal vacation. Except me, I’ll be working,” Eira winked before going into her room with her stuff.

Eira had explained the details of their trip, all to Kuon’s excitement. Ryan and Eira were soon on the next plane to Yumemi. Once they landed, the two got their carry-ons and made their way through the airport. They both began to feel a bit lost until Ryan got Eira’s attention and pointed ahead of them where they saw Kuon and Kaze with bright smiles. They jogged over to each other as Eira leapt into Kuon’s arms. He picked her up and spun around with her as she yelped in surprise. Kuon then put her down and greeted Ryan as Eira greeted Kaze.

“Well this is great, huh. It’s been a bit. It was supposed to be our visiting weekend but even better now that you came to us,” Kaze said as he took Ryan’s suitcase as Kuon took Eira’s. “Hey Ryan, where’s Macey?” Kaze asked.

“Couldn’t make it. She’s on vacation.”

“Aw, you guys are usually together! Ah that’s ok, at least we have this dynamic duo to fill the air,” Kaze joked as he pointed to Eira and Kuon. Kuon elbowed him on his side. “So you guys are cordially invited to stay with me and Kaze at our house,” Kuon said brightly.

“Actually, that uh won’t be necessary,” Eira said with a playful tilt of her head. “The officials of the competition gave Jade and I the option of staying at Sierra Muse, this fancy exclusive hotel where most of the competitors are staying. I’m sure Jade is already settled in there. So, you all are cordially invited to stay at Sierra Muse with me.” The boys’ eyes widened. Kaze grew an overjoyed expression.

“Hell yeah!!” He exclaimed, throwing a fist in the air.

“Wait, they’ll let you bring us in? Won’t we get in trouble?” Kuon came in.

“Hm I’m sure they’ll pull some strings for me. If not, Jade will handle it. Let’s loosen up and have some fun, I owe Ryan this vacation,” Eira responded as she ruffled Ryan’s hair.

“Thanks, Eira. This’ll be great,” Ryan said.

“What are we waiting for then! Let’s hit it!” Kaze said. They all then followed Eira to where they were leading in-coming competitors to transportation to the hotel.

They were soon taken to the hotel where they saw Jade standing in the lobby. Her eyes lit up as she opened her mouth to speak until a hotel staff member stopped them.

“As far as I have been informed, competitors are just allowed to be with their coaches only,” he said to Eira.

“Hey buddy, it’s alright. As my skater I allowed her to bring along whoever she wanted. If there’s a problem I’ll just bring it up to the manager and see what she thinks about her security meddling with the competition,” Jade said surely.

“Ah alright, enjoy your stay,” the man said as he let them through. Jade went to hug Eira as she brightly greeted the others. She showed them over to their room which had two suites with two beds in each room and a door dividing them.

“This is awesome,” Kaze said as he nodded an impressed nod.

“Only the best for the pro skaters,” Jade winked.

“Now we get to really enjoy our time here together,” Kuon said as he went to hold Eira’s hand, a blush coming to her face as she gave a bashful smile.

“You bet, and with that said, girls in one room and boys in the other,” Jade said with her hands on her hips as she glanced at the two’s hands. Kuon and Eira swiftly let go of each other and chuckled.

“Wait, you guys didn’t bring anything to stay here for a week,” Ryan came in.

“Don’t worry about it, in the morning we can stop by our place and pack some stuff and be back here before breakfast,” Kaze winked.

“Sounds like a plan. They’re giving us a couple free days anyway so you guys can take us sightseeing, it’ll be fun,” Eira said. With that, they went to get settled in their respective rooms.

Once it was morning, a low alarm sounded in the boys’ room. Kaze sat up in bed and stretched as he swiftly turned it off. He looked over to the second bed and made sure Ryan was still asleep. He smirked then stood up on the bed, kicking Kuon off to the floor with his foot.

“Ahh what the heck, man??” Kuon groaned as he untangled himself from the blankets. Kaze shushed him as he put a finger to his own lips and winked.

“We said we were going to get our stuff before breakfast and that’s exactly what we’re gonna do. The sooner we do it, the better. We can’t keep your lady waiting~,” Kaze said playfully.

“Alright alright..” Kuon responded. As soon as they got ready they quietly made it out of the suite and down to the lobby. Kaze was both a night owl and a morning person so he was in high spirits after picking up Eira and Ryan late last night. While Kuon was still attempting to keep himself from yawning as he walked.

“Hey watch it pal!” He heard just ahead of him. Someone had knocked into Kaze and pushed him back in response.

“Hey back off! How about you watch it?” Kuon said as all he could do was shove the guy’s shoulder before Kaze pulled him back.

“Yo chill its no problem,” Kaze assured.

“Hm I haven’t seen you guys before. You surely can’t be competitors, it’s a wonder that you’re even guests here,” the guy with platinum blonde hair said as he smugly crossed his arms.

“Well we’ve been specially invited by one of the skaters, thanks very much,” Kaze said in a matter of fact tone.

“Yeah how are you even here anyway? Aren’t these competitions gender-specific?” Kuon asked as he glared at him.

“Oh don’t you know? This is a pairskate match. We’ve been practicing for a month before hand.” He responded. Kuon just looked on at him with a baffled expression.

“Ah, I’m assuming your lady didn’t tell you in advance. What a shame. But it really could just be an honest mistake. Well whoever she, or even he, may be I’m sure they’ll do just fine. Maybe not as well as me and my partner, but just fine. I’ll see you around,” he said with a glint in his eye as he waved them off. Kuon and Kaze just watched him leave.

“What a dumbass,” Kaze said. “So uh, what are ya gonna do now?”

“Well, let’s get our stuff first and then we’ll talk it over. I’m sure it just had to slip Eira’s mind to tell me. I trust her,” Kuon said. Kaze nodded as they then walked out of the hotel.

They came back with small suitcases that they dropped off at the room and met up with the others in the small diner within the hotel.

“So how’s Rick, Jade?” Eira asked brightly.

“Oh he’s fine. Watching over the rink and the kids and all. Those two are so proud of their mom and dad right now hehe. They’ll be watching on tv so you know they’re there every step of the way,” Jade responded surely as she fiddled with her wedding ring.

“Ryan, you have Eira’s song right?” Jade chimed.

“Mm hm. It’s here. I just don’t know why you want to use this one. Macey and I were experimenting with storytelling,” Ryan said.

“That’s exactly why I want to use it,” Eira said.

“Hey Eira,” Kuon spoke up. “What kind of competition are you in right now?”

Eira gave a weary glance to Jade. Jade only tilted her head curiously.

“Um.. oh Ever,” Eira began with his pet-name. “I know you trust me and that you’d be understanding but I still kinda kept it from you. It’s uh.. a pair-skate.”

“What?” Ryan asked with wide eyes.

“Wait you didn’t tell anyone??” Jade exclaimed.

“I’m sorry! Look, I’ve been doing well in winning on my own. I’m proud of where I’ve gotten. Jade suggested to me I try another division to see how that would go. To see if I would be any good at it,” Eira explained.

“Ah so Jade roped you into this,” Kaze said.

“Hey don’t look at me! She was supposed to have told you earlier!” She protested.

“You know, you could’ve at least let me meet the guy who will be skating nice and close with my girlfriend. To make sure I could trust him with you,” Kuon said.

“I know. And I’m sorry. With Jade peptalking me I was focusing on what would be the best for my career, I didn’t think to tell you and once I did we were already so deep in practices. It’s just me not knowing when to open my mouth,” Eira said glumly. Ryan looked at her with understanding eyes. Kuon thought a moment then gave a sigh before holding her hands in his across the table.

“Of course I forgive you, Eira. You’re expanding your competitive horizon. That’s cool. Can I just.. meet him though?” Kuon said.

“Of course! But I don’t know when, he said he’ll be taking advantage of the free days to keep to himself and tour around. He hasn’t been to Yumemi himself. Maybe on a day we practice,” Eira said. They all agreed as they soon finished up their breakfast and went out for the day.

They were able to go around as Kuon and Kaze showed them around their favorite places to go. It brought Eira back to the days when she went to school in Yumemi. They did some shopping and Eira was able to take plenty of pictures for her social media while Ryan took some pictures to send to Macey. Kaze took Ryan and Jade for further sightseeing while Kuon and Eira sat at a bench in the shopping center as they watched people crossing the streets and going from store to store with bags in their hands.

“Kuon, um.. you’ve managed to make my trip here a whole lot less stressful,” Eira said tenderly as she locked her fingers with his, a blush coming to her face.

“I’m glad to help, Eira,” Kuon responded as his face flushed as well. A short silence came between them as Kuon scratched behind his head.

“You ok?” Eira asked with a tilt of her head.

“Oh yeah. I’m just still a bit worried about who your partner is,” he admitted.

“Oh Kuon. You should know you have nothing to worry about when it comes to me.. right?” She said.

“No yeah I totally trust you Eira, of course. It’s just him I’m worried about. What if he tries something funny? That you’re not cool with or.. I don’t know,” Kuon said. Eira chuckled and nuzzled closer to him.

“We’ve been practicing together for a few months and especially so the last month in advance for this competition. I can assure you we have our boundaries and agreements set in stone,” Eira explained.

“It’s still also strange to me how you’ve been practicing so much and never thought to tell me..” Kuon said in a mockingly upset tone.

“It’s strange how you didn’t find out,” Eira jokingly argued. Kuon paused a moment and rose a brow.

“...Touche,” He said with a short laugh. They both sighed then continued to look out at the people. After a moment, Kuon turned his head to look at Eira again and smiled. She looked back and curiously tilted her head until he tenderly leaned his head forward and kissed her.

Soon the next day rolled around and Eira woke up to properly organize their shopping bags in the room. Jade stepped into the room and got her attention.

“Hey, it’s the first day of real practice time. Let’s hustle and meet at the rink,” she said. Eira nodded as she watched Jade leave then turned back and finished up the bags. She then went next door and knocked on the boys’ room door to find Kuon had answered.

“First day of real practice. We get three. Now you’ll get to meet the mystery man. Care to walk with me?” Eira teased. Kuon chuckled and shook his head.

“I would love to, but I have to make sure these two are in order first. We’ll see you there,” he responded. Eira kindly nodded and was about to step out. “Hey,” he called and held her arm before she could go.

“Hm?” Eira hummed curiously. Kuon gently pulled her in and pecked her on the lips. A sudden blush came to her face which only made Kuon enjoy it more as he pulled her into a longer kiss. She obliged and wrapped her arms around him for a moment until she snapped out of it and pulled away as she began to laugh. “A-Alright alright already I have to go or Jade will get mad.”

“I can’t help it if you leave me wanting more. I can’t have enough when you’re so good,” Kuon teased her.

“K-Kuon shut up! I’m- I’m leaving. God.. Ryan is in there,” Eira said embarrassedly as she briskly walked off. Kuon laughed to himself as he watched her leave before closing the door and turning back to the room. Kaze only grinned and gave a thumbs up before turning to look at Ryan who was still asleep in his bed. Kaze jumped onto the bed and stood with his hands on his hips before he kicked him off and laughed.

“Rise and shine! No one is safe when I’m awake first!” He called. Ryan could only sit up on the floor and rub his head as he stayed in a daze.

The three guys soon made it to the rink where the competition was going to be held. They looked around with wide eyes at the large size of it all. Kaze gave a long whistle which echoed around the rink, being impressed by the view.

“I can’t believe Eira can compete in places like this,” Ryan said.

“Well she usually doesn’t, right? She usually sticks with local competitions. She’s trying something new and brave,” Kuon said brightly.

“Let’s go find her,” Ryan suggested. They walked around the bleachers and looked out to the rink to spot any sign of Eira or Jade. There were multiple skaters on the rink which made it harder to see. They then finally spotted Jade on the ice talking to someone before getting in position and making a jump herself. She smiled and gave a firm nod before stepping off the ice and watching the rink with her hands resting on the rink barrier. Kuon was about to call out to her until he spotted Eira in the ice being lifted up then carefully brought back down by her partner.

“Good good. Just remember that jump. And you were a little shaky once you were putting her down there though. Where’s that arm strength, Jayce…?”

“Yes, sorry ma’am,” Eira’s partner responded to Jade as they made their way back to her. Eira soon noticed the guys standing there.

“Oh Kuon! You guys made it. Here, this is-“

“YOU?” Kuon, Kaze, and Jayce exclaimed to each other.

“So.. you guys have met…” Eira said with a raised brow.

“Eira dear, these are the jerks I told you about that ran into me the other day,” Jayce said.

“Us the jerks? You were the one who decided to shove me even though it was an accident,” Kaze came in.

“This happened and you didn’t tell me?” Eira asked.

“I didn’t think he was worth mentioning but I guess he had other ideas,” Kuon said.

“Yeah he was all like “your girlfriend won’t do as good as me and my partner” and whatever else,” Kaze added.

“Wait you mean to tell me-”

“Yes Jayce, Kuon is my boyfriend,” Eira said in an annoyed tone. They were all silent for a moment as they processed everything. “You felt the need to insult these guys you didn’t even know?” She then said.

“I- Well- ah.. there’s no excuse,” Jayce responded. “Alright. Kuon, I’m sorry, man. I guess it was just.. I don’t know. The stress of the competition. Have to keep a confident front to win huh. Also I’m from Pacifica and only ever go to New Athens now and then and those two are hustling cities so I definitely act like it. Sorry to you both,” he said as he shook hands with Kuon and Kaze. They both nodded to him unsurely. “Hey, you’re Eira’s brother right? Nice to meet you,” he continued as he shook Ryan’s hand. “Alright Eira, let’s take it from the top,” he said before skating out to the ice.

“Uh.. not a good first impression,” Ryan said.

“Ugh I know. I’m sorry guys. But he’s a trustworthy partner at least,” Eira responded. She comfortingly put her hand to Kuon’s cheek before skating out to the ice with Jayce.

“So what do you think?” Ryan asked Kuon as they stayed by the barrier while Jade and Kaze sat at the bleachers.

“Hm I don’t know. Now that he knows I’m the one who put a damper on his day he might want to get back at me,” Kuon said.

“I don’t think he would put his partnership with Eira on the line for that,” Ryan said.

“No he wouldn’t hurt her. But he could end up manipulating her and flirt just to get back at me,” Kuon said.

“One two three four five six seven eight, yes hold it let me see!” Jade called out to them on the ice. Jayce lifted her up then put her down into a low dip. Eira had her head back with her arms out, fingers grazing the ice as Jayce leaned down closer to her. His face barely touching hers and making his way down her neck.

“Hey Jade! This is part of the routine??” Kuon asked.

“Oh yeah. It’s supposed to be majestic. A gripping, captivating story that melts your very soul. You don’t know how hard I had to work so that Eira could stop being embarrassed and turning red. A red face and nervous expression does not look good on the ice. It’s all acting and I had to constantly remind her of that, which I’ll gladly remind you too,” Jade explained.

“You do know the judges are more so focused on the actual routine than they are of “a story” right?” Kuon said with a flat look.

“Kill the fun why don’t you,” Jade remarked.

“You trained them well then. It looks like they’re about to make out or something,” Kaze snickered. They turned to look back at them. Jayce and Eira were up right in a ballroom stance as they twirled around as Jayce held her close.

“Here this’ll make you feel better. Alright guys, finishing move let’s see it,” Jade called out to them. The two let go of each other as they simultaneously made a jump then posed looking away from each other, only holding each other’s hand. They all clapped for them except for Kuon who still held an unsure look.

“Excellent. You looked very believable out there. We’ll be super ready for the competition in no time,” Jade said as Eira and Jayce skated back to them.

“Will be ready? We are ready,” Jayce said confidently.

“You did a lot better on this second run, Jayce,” Jade pointed out.

“Huh, well let’s say I had a new motivator,” he said as he winked at Kuon. Kuon furrowed his brows and crossed his arms.

“Let me just make something clear alright? Whatever you choose to do is strictly for the act,” he said firmly.

“Heh of course. That’s obvious isn’t it?” Jayce responded. Kuon could only stand quiet. “Hey, why don’t we all go and do something fun huh? We’ve practiced a lot already. You guys already went shopping and sightseeing though, right?”

“Yeah,” Jade responded.

“And I did that too. Well, let’s just go eat out somewhere,” Jayce suggested.

“Alright with me. You guys down?” Jade asked. They all agreed and were soon on their way out. They spent the time talking and getting to know Jayce a little more. While he acted more respectful and kind than before, whenever Kuon wanted sometime with Eira, Jayce unknowingly found a way to interrupt.

“Ah I’m sorry Kuon. We’re skate partners which formed this friendship. I don’t think he’s used to my boyfriend being around,” Eira said as her and Kuon walked behind the rest of them. “I’m sure he’s not doing it on purpose. What could he have to gain from doing that?”

“Trying to make me jealous? Whisking you away?” Kuon exaggerated. Eira laughed and nudged his shoulder. “It looks like he’s on better terms with Kaze and gets along with Ryan. I’m glad,” Eira said, watching Jayce talk away with the two.

“Well Kaze’s a talker and Jayce is definitely one too. Talkers attract. And Ryan’s a spectator to it all being more of a listener so of course he wants to hear everything and be involved,” Kuon said. Eira looked up at him and smiled.

“So Ryan you made the song we’re using? I’ll have to hire you to make stuff for just my skates next time,” Jayce chimed.

“Hey he’s not the only one that makes music ya know. I could definitely use the work,” Kaze said.

“Oh, then I’ll definitely keep that in mind,” Jayce laughed.

“Even though Jayce is a good friend and skate partner, he and really no one will know me as well as you,” Eira said kindly. Kuon gave a proud smile and hugged her from the side.

“You’re… right! I really shouldn’t be worrying so much. There’s things he’ll never know. Like.. what a late night conversation over the phone with you is like, what your true devotion to your responsibilities, to Ryan means to you… what a great kisser you are…”

“Kuon!” Eira protested. He laughed and shook his head. “You see? You’re right,” she then assured with an amused shake of her head.

“Alright everyone! It’s getting late and we only have a couple more practice days left until the big time. Let’s get our rest alright?” Jade said. They agreed and started to make their way to their rooms.

“Yo Kuon!” Jayce came up to him and dapped him, looking him in the eyes. “Today was fun. It was cool getting to know you and Eira dear’s friends. At first I thought you guys were a couple of idiots walking around. But you guys are cool. No hard feelings.” Kuon smiled and gave a nod.

“Yeah. We thought you were some stuck up loser. You’re not so bad yourself,” Kuon joked. They chuckled then waved each other off before heading back to their rooms.

The next couple days were full of practice and by the end of each one they would all eat together which comforted Kuon’s lingering uneasiness. The day of their skate finally came and they were making their final preparations.

“You turned in the song right?” Ryan asked Eira.

“Yeah, this is going to be special because of you,” she brightly responded.

“I’m actually getting a little nervous about this.”

“How do you think I’m feeling? But just um.. hone that anxiety into excitement. That’s what I’ve come to learn how to do. It’s something we can practice together,” Eira assured him as she updated her social media. Ryan smiled and nodded until someone knocked on the door to her room.

“You guys done in there?” Kuon said on the other side.

“Yeah come in,” Eira said. Kuon walked in to find Eira ready in costume in a light black and blue dress with glittering fabric and her hair up in a ponytail

“You look amazing,” he said. Eira blushed and picked up her bag.

“Thank you. Now, let’s get going guys,” she said.

They made their way to the rink to find the place was full of people and the judges were sitting in their places. Cameras and reporters were scattered about as people waited in anticipation for the competition to start. Officials directed Kuon and Kaze to sit front row at the bleachers while they let Ryan and Jade stand by the barrier. Jayce caught up with them wearing a similar black and blue suit to Eira’s. Jayce and Eira hugged and took a picture together to quickly post online before some reporters went to catch last minute interviews with them. Kuon smiled as he noticed Eira trying to hide her inner nervousness in front of the cameras. Soon last minute practices were called off of the rink as the competition started. They watched and cheered at each pair going by. Kuon wished he could be right by Eira’s side as he watched her from between the barrier.

Soon it was Jayce and Eira’s turn on the ice. One of Ryan and Macey’s newer songs played as they began to skate. They performed flawlessly and in sync with each other. In certain moments of closeness between them, Jayce remained at a reasonable distance. Kuon chuckled and crossed his arms.

“I knew he only did that before to annoy me,” Kuon said to Kaze. Ryan watched on with bright eyes as he recorded a bit of the performance for Macey to see live. She would soon go on to see the full performance on tv. Eira and Jayce were solely focused on their routine, forgetting about the rest of the world around them especially when it came to the more complicated jumps and tricks. They would lock eyes with each other when they were even slightly uncertain of the next move and they carried each other all the way through to the end. The audience roared with their finish. Eira and Jayce held hands and bowed before shortly embracing. They made their way off the ice together and embraced their friends before getting their grand results.

It was their final night at the hotel as they packed their things, cleared the rooms, and awaited their transports back to the airport.

“See you next time Jayce, Kuon, Kaze. You guys are always a riot,” Jade said kindly as she got into the taxi. Kaze went and hugged Ryan tight before he playfully ruffled his hair.

“See ya later, bud. Keep those tracks coming. I’m always happy to help when you get stuck with something,” he said surely.

“Heh definitely. We’ll do a collab,” Ryan said. He then gave a short hug to Kuon then looked to Eira who assured him to wait in the taxi with Jade.

“It was cool to meet you all. Kaze, you can bet on me taking you up on your offer. I’d like to get to know you better,” Jayce said with a cunning smile.

“Uh yeah, sure. Heh see ya Eira, imma just wait over there..” Kaze said unsurely as he swiftly went to stand by the hotel. The three laughed.

“Again, sorry about that misunderstanding before. You two are great. And Kaze’s something,” Jayce continued.

“Uhh if you say so..” Kuon laughed.

“You don’t need a ride to New Athens?” Eira offered.

“No, I’m going straight back to Pacifica. Been too long away from home practicing with you and all. I need to sleep in my own bed,” Jayce responded.

“Alright see you. Thank you for the costumes they worked great.” Eira said.

“Of course they were. Designed by yours truly! Take good care of her, Kuo~” he said before stepping into his own taxi and driving off.

“Well this was a trip,” Kuon said lightheartedly.

“It always is ever since we’ve been together. You make my life exciting,” Eira said.

“I could say the same thing about you.” They gave each other a short peck before he opened the door of the taxi for her and let her in. Kuon waved her off as the taxi drove away.

Prompt: “You Shouldn't Have Come Here”

Original Fiction

Story: Crawl & Blizzard

Eira was on her way home from class one day. She reached for her keys to unlock her front door when she felt her phone vibrate. She briefly wondered if it was a message from Kuon as she pulled it out and opened the message. It was an unknown number but to her unexpected surprise the message said it was Aika. Eira hadn’t heard about or even thought back about her in a long while. She politely responded but also asked how she had gotten her number. Aika simply responded she had gotten it from Hitomu, another person Eira hadn’t thought about or been in touch with for a long time. Aika explained she just wanted to invite her to hang out since she heard they both lived in New Athens and it had been a while. How could Eira refuse? Aika sent her address and, after getting freshened up, Eira went on her way to Aika’s house.

Eira looked down at her phone to double check if the address was correct, and it was. She looked up at the house with raised brows at how large and new it looked. Eira carefully stepped up to the front door and rang the doorbell. It took a few moments before anyone opened the door. Aika opened the door with a cold expression. She looked Eira up and down. “You shouldn't have come here,” she said as she blankly stared at her.

“Uh, heh, what?” Eira stammered as she glanced to the side and held up her phone. “You sent me a message didn’t you?” Aika's serious expression slowly broke. She began to laugh as she hugged Eira.

“Hey I'm glad you came. I know we hardly even know each other but you helped me out during a rough patch in my life. I'm grateful for that. I want to get to know you more,” Aika said with a smile.

“Hardly know each other? Come on, your Aika Suisei. The rich girl with a boat who can tell off any guy with a flick of a wrist,” Eira teased as she lightly nudged Aika’s arm. Aika gave a chuckle.

“Yeah, and your the sexy girl I hit on,” Aika said as she gestured for her to come inside. Eira laughed and shook her head as she went inside. She couldn’t help but look up and around at the well kept and spacious house.

Aika lead Eira to the main living room. Eira noticed a blonde woman with an eye patch dressed in a suit sitting on the center couch. She was watching TV.

“Uh hello,” Eira said awkwardly with a short wave and a half-nervous smile. The woman glanced at her and gave a short wave back.

“Oh yeah that's my assistant/bodyguard/roommate. She may be a battle hardened warrior, but really she's a little slice of cheesecake. Her name's Ellie,” Aika joked. Ellie kept a serious face but gave a short almost unnoticed chuckle.

“Oh ok, I’m Eira. Nice to meet you,” she said as she kindly went to shake her hand. Ellie gave a nod and firmly shook her hand back.

“You’re the ice skater right? 'Cause of Aika I'll get stuck watching some of your events on TV. You're good, but I wonder if Aika watches the events for the ice skating or to see you,” Ellie said as she glared at Aika and gave a smirk. Eira blushed and rubbed the back of her head.

“Heh thank you. You actually watch me, after all this time?” She asked Aika. Aika blushed.

“Yeah I've always been into ice skating and one day just saw you. Been following you since. Call me a fangirl I guess,” she answered.

“Wow that’s cool of you,” Eira said. She paused as she looked to her shoes a moment. “Sorry I haven't kept in touch.”

“No, don't feel bad. I'm glad you're here right now. Was expecting you not to show up to be honest.”

“How could I not when you made the effort to get my number,” Eira said brightly. She then went to the couch and sat down and sighed. “Honestly reading your name, and Hitomu’s, that brought me back. It feels like ages ago.”

“It has been a while. Back when I first met you I was a bratty spoiled girl. Actually it was the week before I broke up with my first and longest girlfriend, so I was going through things that had nothing to do with you. I feel bad about that night I was pushing myself onto you. It wasn't cool, but now I hope we can move past all that and just be cool friends,” Aika said with a smile as she sat next to Eira.

Eira smiled. “Huh, I didn’t know that. As far as I knew you were the crazy girl throwing some random yacht party. But you didn’t do anything wrong. It was fun and I just assumed you were drunk,” she said with a laugh. “You were cool and I didn’t mean to push myself away from you. I was also going through some bad and awkward stuff. Yaro and Hitomu. I just needed to get away, plus there was no one looking after my brother here. So I left and moved forward, didn’t look back. But that didn’t mean one of the people I was trying to get away from was you,” she assured. Aika was listening closely to what she said. Ellie who was still trying to watch TV played an accessory to the conversation.

“Hey, you were having problems with Hitomu? I saw him not that long ago, do I gotta go and kick his ass,” Aika said as she jokingly scowled.

“What? Nono!” Eira laughed as she haltingly waved her hands. “Just typical drama. He was with Yaro but liked this girl, Musouka I think her name was, but then I also liked him. I managed to make things awkward.. but then he continued to make things awkward.. until I just let him go. But I had no place there anymore anyway,” Eira briefly explained.

“Wow, Hitomu was a real player huh?” Aika said before standing up. “I'm gonna cook us up something nice to eat. You can join me in the kitchen, so we can leave Ellie here to watch whatever she's watching,” Aika said as she stretched in place.

“Oh yeah sure,” Eira said as she stood as well. “Sorry,” she added as she smiled at Ellie. Ellie raised her brow.

“You can make it up by making sure Aika doesn't burn the food again,” she said as she waved them off.

“No problem, I’d love to help. Lead the way,” Eira said to Aika.

16. Trying Something New

Kuon stood leaning forward against the barrier of the rink as he watched Eira skate freely on the ice as she listened to something with her earbuds in. She hadn’t noticed he was there. “I wonder what she’s listening to,” he said out loud with a smile. “Hm who knows. Probably something from some anime soundtrack,” Jade joked with a playful tilt of her head. “Hey you’re her coach. Aren’t you supposed to be, I don’t know, helping her train?” He asked. “Eh we’ve been at it for a while. It’s break time,” she said with a shrug. Kuon turned back to Eira and continued to watch her. Jade gave a bright smile before going to sit on one of the nearby bleachers. After a while, Eira stopped and turned to find Jade but instead found Kuon looking her way. Her eyes widened as she skated up to him. “Oh Kuon, how long have you been here?” She asked. “Hmm a while,” he responded with a wink. Eira chuckled then gave a short peck to his lips. Just then, Eira’s face lit up. “Kuon! This is the perfect time,” she said as she gripped his hand. “To..?” Kuon asked, raising a brow. “To teach you how to skate some,” Eira challenged. Hearing this, Jade’s face brightened then she went to look for some extra skates. “Huh-um what?” Kuon said nervously. “Yeah, it’ll be fun. And if you get good enough, we could even try pair skating. I help with your dance stuff, you should help with my skating stuff,” Eira said. Jade soon came back with some skates and handed them to Kuon. Kuon looked to her with a baffled expression. She only chuckled and winked then went back to sit at the bleachers. “Come on. Let’s at least try,” Eira said. Kuon contemplated a moment before finally sighing. “Alright why not,” he said with a shake of his head. Eira smiled then exited the rink to help him put on his skates.

Before he knew it, Kuon was taking his first steps onto the ice. Obviously nervous and unbalanced. Eira laughed as she held his arm. “You really haven’t tried skating at least once?” She asked. “N-no. Isn’t it obvious?” He said with a shaky laugh. “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it,” She assured. At first, they stayed near the barrier where he could hang on if he felt himself slipping. Once they made a lap around the rink, Eira began to lead him more towards the middle of the rink. “W-wait Eira, there’s nothing to hang onto over there,” Kuon said as he tried to keep calm. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you go,” Eira said surely. She then instructed him to copy how she skated. One short glide after the other. Kuon fumbled at times but for the most part followed the best he could. Eira couldn’t help but laugh at his nervous and concentrated expression. “Hey this isn’t funny. This is serious business,” Kuon said before tripping up once again. Eira was sure to hang onto him tightly and not let go. Once she got him to follow her strides again, she gradually began to let him go so he would skate on his own. “H-hey.. I think I got something,” Kuon said with a nervous chuckle. “Yeah keep going,” Eira encouraged. Kuon slowly turned to skate beside her. He was about to pass by her until he began to lose his balance. He quickly gripped her arms so she would keep him up but it only resulted in him pulling her down with him. They stared at each other for a moment as they tried to piece together what happened. “Are you ok?” Eira finally said. Kuon then burst into laughter as he lay his head back down, Eira soon laughing with him. She then stood up and helped him up as well. “I think that’s enough for me for today,” Kuon said as he tightly held her arms. “Well you made some sort of progress at least,” she said brightly. She then lead him back to the bleachers where he began to untie his skates.

“Well that was a fun short lesson,” Kuon said as he kicked off the skates. “Yeah you did well,” Eira said, nodding in agreement. Kuon looked to her with a deadpan expression. “You’re lying,” he then said. “No no I mean it. The important part was you tried and had fun. I’m proud of you,” she said surely. Kuon smiled then hugged her from the side. “So when’s lesson two of Kuon on ice?” Jade teased. “Um.. I’m taking a semester off,” Kuon joked back. Eira rolled her eyes but smiled.

With Eternity

Kuon walked into the skating rink and was met with the man at the front desk. Shelves of different ice skates stood behind him as he flipped through a sports magazine as he supported his head with his hand, leaning over the counter. Kuon adjusted his neck nervously before walking up to him. “Hey there, name’s Rick. What can I set ya up with?” he asked politely as he gestured to the skates behind him. “Uh no, that won’t be necessary. I’m just here looking for my girlfriend. I think she’s inside,” Kuon explained. “Well isn’t that nice. You’re that nice young woman’s man? Consider yourself lucky to have someone like her. She comes in almost everyday. She’s very dedicated. Sometimes she comes in with her coach and sometimes she comes all on her own. That’s true spirit right there ya know,” Rick said. “Well today she’s with her coach, I’ll let you in. Though she had her skates with her I haven’t heard much skating going on so you can check for yourself. The studio is to the right of the rink when you enter. Locker rooms’ to the left,” he continued. Kuon promptly thanked him then made his way inside to the rink. He looked around and it was mostly empty with the exception of a few loose skaters about. But no signs of Eira. He looked to the door of the small studio then made his way there. Before he could open the door, he heard a voice suddenly speak up from the other side.

“Great! Again!” Kuon rose a brow then began to carefully open the door. He peeked through the small opening he allowed himself and saw Eira’s coach sitting on a bench with her hands clasped together as she watched something. Kuon opened the door slightly wider to allow himself to see what she was looking at. He found Eira extending one leg far behind her as she held the barre beside her. Her hair was up in a ponytail but her long bangs always managed to escape the tie. As she let go of the barre, she made a small turn as she remained balanced on her leg. She then swung her leg over and made a small leap before turning a short spin. She began to perform chaine leaps, a small turn before each jump. She proved to be very flexible with each leap causing her legs to split shortly while in the air. She then stopped and assumed first position as she closed her eyes, her head looking down. Her coach stood and clapped shortly. “Good job, good job Eira. I’m so glad you’re finally aiming to pursue this. Those people practically had a knife to your neck with deadlines and all that other mess. Starting off is always slow but stay with it, with me, and we’ll go far. Plus your studies on top of all that should get you into big places,” her coach encouraged. Eira looked up and opened her eyes to respond but the first thing she met eyes with was Kuon. Her face flushed as she looked away a moment. “K-Kuon, what are you doing here?” She asked with slight embarrassment in her voice. “I just came to see where you were, what you were doing. And now I see that you’re even more amazing than what I already knew,” he responded. Eira looked back up at him and smiled. “The guy at the desk was nice. Also, this place is huge! A rink, locker rooms, and a spare studio space..” Kuon said. “Oh yeah Rick. He’s always been around,” Eira recalled. “And is my husband,” Eira’s coach spoke up. “I’m Jade by the way,” she said as she extended her hand to him. Kuon took it and shook hands with her shortly.

“So are you ready to go?” Kuon asked. Eira was about to respond before Jade cut in. “Actually, she has to practice her routines on the ice one more time before going anywhere.” “Alright,” Kuon responded with a short shrug. “What?” Eira came in. “Yeah! I haven’t gotten to see you skate in person before. It should be great,” Kuon said. Eira gave a modest smile before Jade began to push her out the door. “There’s no time to waste!”

They had made their way to the rink and sat at the bleachers. Eira began to lace up her skates then headed over to the ice. Kuon walked up to the rink barrier that divided the floor of the bleachers from the ice. “Eira,” he called before she could make it to the middle of the rink. She skated back towards him with a curious look. The barrier between them wouldn’t get in the way as he put his hands over the board, leaned in and kissed her. Having his eyes closed, he moved his hand to rest over hers. Eira was taken aback a moment, her eyes wide until she gradually closed them, reciprocating the kiss until Kuon broke the short moment. Eira could only blink at him as he smiled. “Good luck,” he said warmly. Eira grew a bashful smile in return and hurriedly skated out to the ice to mask the redness coming to her face. “Eira’s practicing her free skate and her short program. Ah, I’m so excited for her official debut I can’t stand it,” Jade said as she remained sitting on the bleacher as she crossed her arms. “The free skate is the longer of the two so it’s good to get it over with.”

Eira soon assumed her readied position and took in a deep breath. She then looked up at Jade and gave a short nod, signaling her to begin the music. She skated her routine for the song she sang herself for a previous event at Ryan’s school. She skated focused and elegantly throughout. Kuon watched with fixed eyes on her. Half-nervous at the possibility of her falling. He cringed slightly after each jump she performed. Jade gave a short chuckle. “Is this your first time seeing this in action? You don’t have to worry. She’s practiced this too many times to count. And if, on the most impossible circumstance, she does fall it’s nothing to just get back up and keep going,” she assured. “Huh, ok,” Kuon responded, her words managing to make him feel somewhat better. He turned back to watch Eira for the rest of her program until she ended with her finishing pose. You could see her attempt to catch her breath but her facial expression remained unfazed. Jade and Kuon clapped shortly, making Eira respond with a playful bow. Jade waited a moment for Eira to regain her breath before she played the next song for her short program. “Alright Eira, this is the one we’re getting the hang of. Focus and don’t think too much about the negatives,” Jade called out to her as she soon began the music. “Is she having trouble with this one?” Kuon asked as he turned to look at her again. “Ah yeah. She really wanted to use this song but it was difficult to come up with a good routine for it. It’s more upbeat, electropop, more dance than like.. interpretive. So what we got is an interesting attempt at a mixture of both elegant and dance which manages to trip her up,” Jade explained. Kuon furrowed his brows then turned to look at Eira’s routine. He noticed that her facial expression was more tense than how it was in her first routine. As the music began its first minute, it was a slow tempo which allowed Eira to complete a successful jump before the lyrics were heard. Kuon raised a brow and smirked. ‘Is that Ryan’s voice?’ He thought to himself as his smirk grew to a smile.

As the song continued Eira was able to perform spins and skate gracefully until they heard a beat come in which cued Eira for another jump that she performed prematurely, causing her to slip up before quickly recovering her balance and continuing on. Her moves became more complicated and fast, which looked impressive and matched the music, but seemed hard to handle. A break came as the music slowed down and a long note was held in the song. ‘Ryan can sing like that?’ Kuon thought being impressed at the siblings’ talents being used together. The song had slow moments where it seemed Eira became more relaxed and comfortable until the fast parts came again. After the song ended, Eira couldn’t keep her finishing pose as she bent down and put her hands to her knees as she caught her breath. “Eira?” Kuon called out to her as he raised an arm in front of him. She looked up at him then gave a smirk, reassuring him she was ok.

Later, they all went to take a break and sat at the bleachers. Eira put on her white and pink hoodie as Kuon bought hot chocolate for the three of them. “So what was that song for your short? I’ve never heard it,” Kuon asked with a smile. “Oh, it’s Ryan’s cover of a song he’s writing for Macey. He wanted to sing it himself as a test and oof, he could pull it off. But he insists on making it just for Macey. That her voice might compliment it a bit more he says,” Eira explained. “His version is just for you. That’s really cool of him,” he said. Eira nodded. They paused a moment as they took a sip from their drinks. “You know… I could probably help you with it,” he continued with a small smile. Eira turned to him with a raised brow. “Your program. I could teach you some stuff and you could even teach me. What do ya say?” He asked as he raised his cup to her. She hesitated a moment before Jade quickly came in and lifted her cup as well. “Oh thank god! Yes! Anything!” She said enthusiastically. Eira laughed shortly. “Alright. Let’s give it a go,” she said as she completed their cups coming together.

“So then, what are we doing first exactly?” Eira asked as she let down her hair then moved to hold Kuon’s hand, walking out of the rink together. “Well, if we’re gonna do this, you’re heading to my place of expertise,” He said in a confident tone. “You have an area of expertise here in New Athens? Wouldn’t your stuff be in Yumemi?” She asked unsurely. “No don’t worry. I take my expertise on the go. Kaze follows me everywhere,” he said. “Right..” Eira responded with an amused roll of her eyes. Kuon had walked to the rink from the hotel him and Kaze were staying in for their visit. It wasn’t a far distance so they walked back to the room he was staying in. They went up to the room as Kuon unlocked the door and abruptly swung it open. “Kaze! Get up you bum we’ve got work to do,” he called obnoxiously, knowing his brother would be asleep. Kaze jolted awake, making him sit up on the couch he was laying on. “Ah I’m up!” He said in a startled tone. A few cans fell to the floor and clattered. Eira went to pick up one of the cans and read the label. It was a popular type of energy drink. She walked up to Kuon and let him read the can as well. After he read the label, he walked up to Kaze and moderately slapped him behind the head. “Ow what the heck?” Kaze said as he rubbed his head. “What are you doing making yourself stay up again? You’re gonna get yourself sick again and who’s going to have to buy the flu medicine… again!” Kuon said. “No no don’t worry! Honestly, these are just from last night I swear. I haven’t been doing this for like nights in a row. I was just working on some new stuff for when we get back to Yumemi. This place is giving me new inspirations that are fueling me,” Kaze explained. Kuon went and pulled him by his arm to stand him up. He eyed him a moment until he brought him into a close hug. “Alright I believe you. Just try not to do anything crazy,” Kuon said. “But that’s what I’m all about,” Kaze joked as he hugged him back. “You know what I mean,” Kuon said more seriously. “I know,” Kaze responded seriously as well. They broke the hug then glanced over to Eira who only watched on.

“So what work did you say we have to do?” Kaze said as he went to sit on the couch again. “Ah for you, never mind. You clearly need to catch up on your sleep now. Wake up at a reasonable time and sleep again at a good time too to get your sleep schedule back in order,” Kuon instructed as he closed Kaze’s laptop and put it under his arm. “Yes dad,” He joked as he gave a fake salute. Kuon put his hand over his brother’s eyes and pushed him to lay down across the couch once again. “Rest up, Kaze. So that after I can see what you put together,” Eira said with a wink. Kaze smiled and nodded before closing his eyes. Kuon went to the bedroom and grabbed a duffle bag. He then took Eira’s hand and lead her out of the hotel room.

“What’s all that for?” Eira asked as she put her own duffle bag she had brought from skating besides his in the back seat of his car. “Do you know how to fight?” Kuon asked with a smile as he turned on the car. “Um.. kick boxing classes since before college, why?” She asked. ‘Oh man she could beat me up if she wanted to!’ Kuon thought to himself. “Oh! W-well then you’re already a step ahead! Dance is a combination of a lot of stuff and martial arts and fighting is one of them. We’re going to train up at my kind of gym,” he said surely. “And the laptop?” She asked pointing to it on her lap. “Music,” he responded. They soon drove to a recreational facility where it was open to use if you had a membership there. “Oh, I don’t have a NAFA membership..” Eira said as they got out of the car and walked to the building. “That’s ok, I have my membership from the one in Yumemi, YMFA. They’ll let you in anywhere and you can sign up under me as a guest,” he said surely. They walked in and were greeted by the woman at the desk. “Welcome to the New Athens Fitness Association. Membership card please?” She asked politely. “I came from Yumemi, I have the membership from the branch up there is that ok?” Kuon asked as he showed his card to her. “Totally fine, sir. Go on ahead,” she said. Kuon soon lead Eira to the fitness room after passing various studios and even a large swimming pool. “Ok! You already have fitness clothes on so I’ll get changed and we’ll work,” he said surely.

After they were ready, Kuon turned on the music and began to train with Eira. There would be moments when she would have to catch up with him and times where he would have to catch up with her. But then there would be that close moment where they would be in sync. They would jab and high-kick at their punching bag as they stood on opposite sides of it. After they had that training done, Kuon began to show her some of the dance moves he uses for his own dance group competitions. Eira put in the song she was using for her program and skipped to the fast paced parts to see what they could put together. Kuon would teach her how to do certain steps and how to perform complicated turns until she got the hang of it. After she had gotten their practice in, Eira changed the song to the slower pieces that she was more confident in and began to teach him a thing or two about her own experience. He would struggle with keeping his balance, causing her to laugh out loud. Kuon looked at her with a warm smile, watching how he was actually able to bring out a looser side of her. As they tried to practice on Kuon’s balance a final time, he began to fall to the ground before he dragged her down with him. They laughed a while as they lay on the floor. Kuon then opened his eyes to look at her. Noticing the silence, Eira opened her eyes as well. “Can I kiss you?” He asked in a warm tone. Eira rolled her eyes and chuckled before he tilted his head up and kissed her. They shared their moment until the double doors opened abruptly. “There you guys are! Are you ready because we need to get more practice in!” Jade said before she looked down at them. They looked back at her with wide surprised eyes. “Oh uh, am I interrupting something?”

The evening soon came and they made their way back to the ice rink. They greeted Rick and invited him to watch Eira’s attempt at perfecting her program. Kaze had stopped in as well and made his way into the rink. Jade and Rick went to sit on the bleachers while Kaze went to stand beside Kuon by the rink barrier. He fist bumped him shortly to greet him before they turned to look at Eira. Kuon looked on at her with eagerness for her to begin, gripping the barrier beneath his hands. Eira skated to the center of the ice as she tied her hair up once again. She took a breath then looked up at Kuon and gave a nod. He pressed play as the music began. The first minute of the song was the slow piece so Eira performed it with ease with small turns and skating. She landed a small jump before the lyrics began and continued to skate until the beat was set to come in. Once the beat came she performed her jump, landing it instantly. They all cheered excitedly as Eira continued, a smile growing on her face. She performed a smooth and quick step sequence with the beat of the music, incorporating turns and twirls. Once the music changed she performed another jump, landing it as well before going into a long scratch spin, going with the first long held note of the song. She then began to skate gracefully to go with the music that changed to a slower tempo. Kuon watched on with amazement and eagerness in his eyes. The music soon began to pick up again, cueing Eira for another jump, again landing it. She then went to the fast footwork once again, incorporating her arms to show she was dancing. The song was just about over as she performed the final jump before spinning at top speed to go with the final note being held in the song. Her spinning began to slow as only the small bit of instrumental was left before ending on her finishing pose. They all stood and cheered loudly, making Eira put her hands over her mouth in excitement but she still managed to give a short bow.

Eira made it over to the floor and was quickly hugged by Kuon and Kaze. “Hey I heard you were having a rough time with your stuff. If you were I’d never be able to tell! You did awesome!” Kaze said. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “Eira! You’re so ready to kick this all the way home!” “Yeah, I’m impressed. Keep at it,” Jade and Rick came in. Her face began to flush at the attention she was receiving. “Hey, you mind if I share this moment?” Eira said. “Let’s do it!” Kaze said. Eira pulled her phone from her pocket, held it up, and took a group picture of all of them together. “First successful run through of my new short program. Can’t wait for the debut,” Eira read her post out loud before posting.

They all clapped shortly and began to talk amongst themselves until Kuon pulled Eira a bit to the side. “Eira,” he began modestly. “Thank you,” she interrupted. “What?” “I couldn’t have perfected my routine if it wasn’t for your help. Kuon I.. I love you for that,” she said as her face only grew in redness before she hugged him. He hugged her back as they enjoyed each other’s embrace until Kaze came by them and jokingly began to dance. “Let’s go out to celebrate on me!” He said in a sing-song voice, trying to match his joke moves. “Great, you have money right?” Kuon said as he raised a brow. Kaze stopped in place and thought a moment. “See you guys there,” he said as he ran out of the rink. Kuon shook his head before laughing shortly. He took Eira’s hand and began to walk out with her. “I love you too,” he said warmly.

5. Nighttime Routine

It was the end of a long day spent together for Kuon and Eira and he had taken the time to walk her home. “As always, this was fun, Kuon,” Eira said as she rested her head on his shoulder. “It was. And as always, we have tomorrow more to spend, Eira,” he said. “Yeah, until you have to go back to Yumemi and I won’t see you for another weekend,” Eira said glumly. “Aw, that’s ok though! Remember I come by New Athens every other weekend just for you. Right, Yuki?” He called her by her pet name. She playfully rolled her eyes and smiled. “I know I know, Ever,” she called him by his own pet name. They made it to her door and they stayed holding each other’s hands for a moment. A slight blush came to Eira’s face as she looked to the side. “I-I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said modestly, not quite able to meet his gaze. Kuon chuckled as he tilted his head. This took her attention and made Eira look up at him. “See you,” he said before kissing her. They broke away and looked into each other’s eyes for a moment, Eira’s blush not having a chance to fade. They both then chuckled as they let go of each other’s embrace as Eira slightly fumbled to unlock and open her front door. They stuttered a final goodbye before Eira closed the door to her house while Kuon smiled and began to walk back to the hotel he always stayed at with his brother Kaze.

Later that evening, Eira had settled at her desk in her room and had been working away at homework she had from her college classes. She tiredly rested her head in her hand as she tapped the desk with her pencil with the other.

Kuon had made it back to his hotel and had settled in bed. Kaze was sitting cross-legged on his own bed with his headphones on and plugged in to his laptop. He typed and nodded along to whatever he was doing. Kuon smirked and cleared his throat. “Hey, Katz, remember to actually go to sleep at some point ok?” Kuon said with a shake of his head. “Huh? Oh ha yeah yeah don’t worryyy,” Kaze said as he waved a dismissive hand. Kuon chuckled then put his earbuds in that were plugged into his phone and listened to music. After shuffling his music, he smirked and decided to send a message.

Eira was beginning to get irritated with her work until a notification beeped on her phone. She picked it up and soon smiled at Kuon’s message.

“Get some sleep.”

After a moment Kuon’s phone vibrated. He picked it up and chuckled.

“Are you looking through my window?”

“No, but someone has to be in charge of the two night owls around me.”

Eira chuckled and shook her head.

“How about you? You should be on the fifth stage of the sleep cycle already.”

Kuon rolled his eyes and smirked.

“I will be once I know you guys are asleep.”

Conversations like those happened practically every night between the two as they reminded each other to get rest and to be ready for the next day. They would make each other smile and snicker out loud until one of them would end up falling asleep before the other. It was usually Kuon. But there were those perfect occasions where they would both agree to turn in for the night.

“Alright Kuon, you win. I put everything away. And I’m going to bed.”

“Good, I’m glad we’ve come to an agreement.”

They both laughed as they put their phones to charge and got comfortable in their beds before sending their last messages for the night.

“Goodnight Eira. Love you <3”
