Moving from your native country of Spain to Manchester in England with your fiancée Leila was a lot to get your head around.

Meaning you had to leave your tattoo business in the hands of your sister which wasn’t the best for you however moving overseas would be good to have a break for a while.

This is how you met Leila. Most of the Barcelona players, female and male got their tattoos done by you. One that attended the parlour the most was Mapi León, she brought Leila along with her one day so they could both get tattoos done.

The brunette decided on an Egyptian eye under her right boob, you were quite surprised at her choice of where the tattoo was to be but you caught a glimpse of lust in her chocolate eyes when she said it.

She kept making excuses to come to your tattoo parlour when she wasn’t playing football just to see you. You soon picked her up on it and she admitted her feelings to you which you were flattered by but you did feel the same way.

After dating for three years she plucked up the courage to ask you to be her wife, you obviously said yes to.

“Bueno, okay, i’ll see you when you get home, te amo mucho.” You blew kisses at the camera, you phone propped up in the kitchen.

“Te amo mucho!” Leila pouted back at you before you pressed the red hang up button.

Tonight you were having a Spanish night which you had every friday, every two weeks you would invite Ona and Laia around, who played football with Leila but tonight it was just you two.

You connected your phone to your speaker, blasting the likes of Rosalía, Bad Bunny, Bizarrap etc. Dancing around the kitchen as you made Pa amb tomàquet.

Making paella was your absolute favourite, everyone loved it, even some of Leila’s english teammates that had came over one night who don’t really like seafood said it was to die for.

You had it in the large dish as Despechá began to play, it was your all time favourite song you couldn’t help but sing and dance along as you cleared up. The music was so loud you didn’t hear Leila come in, she was enjoying watching you move your hips along to the beat.

“Oh hõla bebé.” She bit her lip, making you jump.

“LEILA!” You shouted, throwing a towel at her, “Lo siento but you scare me!”

“Lo siento i was enjoying the show.” She said as you sent her a look.

“Stop it.” You rolled your eyes turning the music down slightly.

“Food smells amazing as usual.” Your fiancée complimented.

“Gracias, why don’t you go and get changed and i’ll set the table.” You suggested which she agreed.

She returned in a hoodie, shorts and socks sitting opposite you, “I’ve been looking forward to this all day.”

“Let’s eat then.”

You plated up both dishes, taking a mouthful of the seafood dish, “Bebé this is incredible.”

A massive smile appeared on your face as she took a second mouthful.

Once you’d eaten, you both decided to crash into your large bed and watch a movie,“What you want to watch?” Leila asked pulling you onto her lap.

“Desperado.”

“Your favourite.” The defender hummed into your hair.

As the movie played Leila began stroking your face, tracing your freckles embedded into your skin. Her actions tended to send you to sleep, you quickly rolled over so she would stop, “Y/N why did you move.”

“Because i would’ve fell asleep else.” You replied taking your sports bra off.

“What are you doing.”

“What i’m hot.” You shrugged going back to the same position you were in before, “You copying me now?”

She laughed taking her own bra off, “Maybe.”

As the movie went on you noticed Leila becoming distracted, playing with your hair not paying attention to the movie. “Leila querida what are you thinking about.”

“You.” She mumbled.

You sighed, “Why is that mi amor.”

“You do everything for me i appreciate it, you cook, you clean, you work, you even moved to Manchester with me.” She said.

“Of course I try my best to look you, your going to be my wife after all.”

“I know and I can’t wait.”

“Me too querida.”

anyway I am going to spoil everyone's fun. The Mummy is a racist movie, it's frustrating that it's popular and no one discusses that, and let me explain why

Whitewashing/brownface/self orientalism. The Carnahan's are meant to be mixed race. Their actors are white. Oded Fehr is white and a significant portion of his career has been playing exotic brown people in media made for white people, specifically while weaponizing the ethnic ambiguity he does have. Imhotep is white- insult to injury, his actor is an Afrikaner! Playing a pre-colonial African character! The only Egyptians played by people who arent white are the sex pest warden, Dr. Bey (also a minor character who dies), and Anck-su-namun. None of their actors are Egyptian.

The portrayal of Egyptian men. The warden and Jonathan are both portrayed as pathetic, weak, morally circumspect, and the warden is a pervert. Imhotep is also a pervert, frankly. The Egyptian public at large- mostly male crowds and male workers- are literally canon fodder and senselessly killed on multiple occasions. They're turned into mindless zombies, with no consideration given to what happens to them afterwards. Did hundreds of people just die? In public? The only two Egyptian men that aren't utterly horrible are Evie's boss, Dr. Bey, and Ardeth.

The portrayal of Egyptian women. The only two we actually hear speak is Evie and Anck-su-namun, both of whom have orientalist tropes applied to them- Evie, when they make her dress "local", and Anck-su-namun with the whole titlating "the pharaoh has me walk around naked and covered in wet body paint so no one can touch me without him knowing" nonsense- similar tropes are applied to Ardeth, frankly, with how his tattoos are portrayed, his ethnic background, etc. They specifically chose tattoos a Western audience would still find sexy (which aren't based on the actual local tattooing traditions). Face veils in early 20th century Egypt didn't really look like that, even the ones you might call flirty, and I find portrayals that make Ancient Egyptian society's overall often greater comfort with bared skin into titillation for the audience pretty offensive, especially as there are currently existing cultures in Africa viewed through lenses like that. It's not merely ahistorical, it's apart of a broader issue with how living people are viewed by others.

This is more of a me thing, other Egyptians may not agree: I think mummies as a horror trope are racist. The key fear to mummy movies is that white people might get punished for disturbing the graves of the honored dead. You are asked to identify with literal colonizers and view the local population as antagonistic (past and present in this case), especially in this movie, which is set before England started pretending it wasn't controlling Egypt (and by the damn way, ask ANY Egyptian when the country got independence and we'll say 1956. Between 22 and 56, England still had explicit control over some of the government, notably foreign relations and military, it used this an excuse to justify control of Sudan, and it was militarily occupying the country, especially the Suez area. When King Farouk tried to make a decision they didn't like, they put his palace under seige. That is not independence. Whoever made the 1922 declaration the first result on Google is manufacturing apologia for imperialism).

in a hopes to participate in Whumptober after quite a few months of being inactive, I thought I’d introduce my ocs who (much to their dismay) will be the victims of my Whumptober pieces! (TW: mentions of drugs, alcohol, death of sibling). This might get really confusing so apologies in advance! :))

the simplified, summarised version is here, and more details of the overall story and character relations are under the cut:

koi - whumpee, mainly following the defiant whumpee trope and emotional/psychological whump

guido - caretaker, sometimes unwilling but overall wants to help (!secret crush on koi!)

cantaro - whumper, mob boss

fab - whumpee, mainly emotional whump but sometimes physical

important side characters:

ciro - fab’s dead brother, subject of koi and fabrizio’s emotional whump

catalina - another caretaker who actually has medical experience so helps guido

now for the in depth introduction for those wanting to learn more about my story! :D note that this takes place in a mafia controlled Buenos Aires - the main thing to know is there are 2 rival families: the Tizianos and Cantaro’s family.

we’re starting off strong with Koi.

Koi is a 24 year old Egyptian male. He’s got loads of tattoos and piercings, and is a pretty tall, strong build guy. Koi works as a sex worker, which is how he got into trouble with Cantaro (the main Whumper of this story). Koi was caught sleeping with Cantaro’s wife and thats how he gets into the whump situation. I would class Koi as a defiant whumpee, and he’s also got a hefty backstory. In short, his lover, Ciro was shot in a drive-by in front of him, when they were 18. This had a huge impact on Koi and led to drinking and drug issues, and he managed to get coerced into being a prostitute and hit man by the Tizianos :( he’s really reluctant to accept any form of help as he feels a lot of shame after being taken by Cantaro which makes for an interesting recovery story.

up next, our caretaker Guido

Guido is also 24, same age as Koi as they’ve been best friends since kids. He was also good friends with Ciro, and was also there that night when Ciro was shot. Guido fled the country and got involved in crime organisations before returning to Argentina to work with the Tizianos there, and he feels slightly guilty about this as he left Koi on his own, being one of the causes why Koi was targeted and forced into prostitution by said mafia family. Guido is not a good person. He is greedy, mean and selfish. But he has a soft spot for Koi because he is in love with him, which he kind of hates but cant help how he feels. He’ll never admit it to Koi obviously. They lived together before Koi went missing and Guido takes care of Koi after rescuing him.

i could never forget Fabrizio

Fabrizio/Fab, is 18, and he is the younger brother of Ciro. This will mean a lot of emotional whump, as the violent streets of Buenos Aires have taken everything from Fab. He is the son of Santos Tiziano, the former leader of the Tiziano crime family, rivals to Cantaro’s family. Fab watched Santos get killed in front of him by Cantaro, but managed to escape Cantaro, for now. Fab is friends with Koi and Guido as they’re part of the crime family, but Fabrizio wants to get out of Buenos Aires, he’s not meant for this life. Fab is really sweet and loves cooking, he ends up moving to Louisiana at age 17 to escape all the crime family stuff in Argentina… but can he run forever?

no matter how essential to the storyline, you could never make me like Cantaro

Eleutario Cantaro (he goes by his last name usually), is a horrid man. He’s the leader of the Cantaro crime family, who openly challenge the Tizianos. Both are fighting for complete control of Buenos Aires, and while the Tizianos seem more powerful for now, the scales often get tipped and swayed. It is said that Cantaro shot Ciro, to weaken the Tiziano family. Cantaro is the main whumper here, and he is very violent and just hates Koi, so prepare for that. He is super power hungry, and wil do anything to gain more power, get revenge etc.

and last but never least, the guy who sort of set the whole story into motion, Ciro

Ciro is the eldest son of the Tiziano family, however he was shot in front of Guido and Koi when he was 18. Ciro was Koi’s lover, although they only got to date for about 6 months before the incident, they had been friends since childhood though. Ciro’s death led to Koi being pulled into the mafia circle properly, as he knew too much by this point to just walk away from the situation, and it also inadvertently led to the death of his and Fab’s dad. Ciro will mainly be mentioned in emotional whump, as Koi loved him dearly, and he was also Fab’s older brother. I am planning to write and post a Ciro death piece on here so that will be fun!

Tattoos of the Near East and Europe

Knowing the full history of tattooing is practically impossible as skin doesn't usually leave a record of itself except in very special circumstances. Despite this, we do know that tattooing goes back quite a long time in human history and span almost every culture in the world. Joann Fletcher, a research fellow at the University of York in the United Kingdom, works with ancient Egyptian mummies, who were once thought to be the first group of people to tattoo because they mummified their dead. However, with the discovery of Ötzi the Iceman, that date was pushed back even farther because he was mummified by the cold, preserving his skin for 5300 years, about 1300 years before the earliest known Egyptian mummy to have one.

Ötzi's tattoos lead us to believe that they were for health reasons, to alleviate the pain of strained or degenerating joints. His tattoos were not placed in such a way that would allow for easy display of status, given they were placed over his lower spine and right knee and ankle.

Ancient Egyptians had figurines with tattoos as early as 4000 BCE and began representing them in tomb paintings around 1200 BCE and tools dated to around 1450 BCE were found near Gurob in northern Egypt. The vast majority of the people that were tattooed in these figurines and paintings, as well as mummies, were female and the tattoo was placed on their thighs, breasts, and abdomens. Because of the gender of the tattooed person and the archaeologists (largely male), for a long time, they were dismissed as 'dancing girls'. That the mummies were found in Deir el-Bahari, where the upper crust were berried, only managed to move the description to 'probably a royal concubine' (basically 'fancy' sex workers). However, Fletcher is of the opinion that these tattoos may have been a permanent amulet, probably tot aid in pregnancy and birth and possibly against sexually transmitted diseases. She also thinks that it was older women who would tattoo the younger women, perhaps as a way of passing down their own strength and fortitude to them.

This is in contrast to other cultures that used tattoos for decoration, though there is some evidence that there were therapeutic ones within the ones we've found preserved. Ancient Libyans were depicted by the Egyptians around 1300 BCE with male leaders wearing geometrical tattoos on their arms and legs.

The Scythian Pazyryk of the Altai Mountain region of Siberia also used ornate tattoos all over their bodies, including mythical creatures on both a male and female ice people. These mummies date to about 400 BCE. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote about the Scythians and Thracians that their 'tattoos were a mark of nobility, and to not have them was testimony of low birth'. This stood out to him because the Greeks and Romans only really used tattoos to show that someone 'belonged' to either a religious sect or a person, or had been a criminal.

This led to Roman soldiers also getting tattoos, at least until Christianity spread; then they were found again to be disfiguring and banned by Emperor Constantine.

The trend of Christianity spreading at the end of a sword or gun caused a lot of native cultures tattooing practices to be vilified.

On October 29, 1969, Egon graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Psychology in the faculty of Psychobiology. Lyall Shiba, also known as Corvus in rap battles, is a homicide detective for the Niigata Police Department and is considered one of their best despite his age. A once famous model and actor, everything changed for Lyall when he had a run-in with “The Sweetheart Killer” and became the only one to ever survive him. The Ancient History of Tattoos—Revealed By Inked-up Mummies

Humans have been getting ink for at least 5,200 years. Here are some of the most intriguing ancient tattoos, from cultic symbols to complex horse motifs.

If you got a tattoo, what kind of ink would you choose and why? The answer might reflect everything from a spur-of-the-moment decision to a poignant tribute to a loved one. But you may not realize that tattoos have an ancient—and fascinating—history.

The word “tattoo” was imported into English thanks to Captain James Cook, who noted the practice, and Tahitian word “tatau” describing it, in Polynesia in the 18th century. But scholars agree that the practice far predates the word itself—and the skin of ancient mummies proves their point.

Who are these inked-up mummies, and what can they teach us about ancient cultures? Here’s a not-at-all exhaustive look at some of the most intriguing tattoos that archaeologists have found from the past and what they tell us about the ancient world.

Tattoos in Ancient Western Europe

The earliest evidence of tattooing is inked into the body of Ötzi the Iceman. Europe’s most famous mummy, Ötzi (also known as “The Iceman”) was discovered by German hikers in the Alps in 1991. Ötzi lived in Tyrol, a mountainous region that borders modern-day Italy and Switzerland, about 5,200 years ago, and after he died his body, and its tattoos, were preserved by ice and the elements.

Archaeologists have since documented 61 line-like tattoos on his body thought to have been created by piercing the skin and applying charcoal dust. Some of them were on areas associated with pain in aging like the knees and ankles, leading archaeologists to theorize that they were created during some kind of pain treatment. But other geometric tattoos on Ötzi’s chest suggest that tattoos had some kind of ritual, ceremonial, or even religious use as far back as the Neolithic age.

The exact meaning may be debated for the next five millennia, though, since researchers concede that without more evidence, there’s no way to know why Ötzi, or other Neolithic people, got inked.

Tattoos in Ancient Egypt

The next earliest evidence of tattoos comes from mummies thought to have died between 3351 and 3017 B.C. in ancient Egypt. Discovered in 1900, the bodies were found to sport tattoos in 2018, when researchers re-examined them using infrared imaging and found that what looked like smudging on the skin was actually body art. Their ink is the earliest known evidence of tattoos depicting images—including a wild bull and a sheep on the male’s arm, and symbols resembling the letter “S” and possibly a staff on the female’s arm and shoulder.

The images, which mirror motifs found in other ancient Egyptian art, are the first evidence of tattooing in Africa. Though researchers can only speculate on what the tattoos meant to their bearers, they could have been status symbols or proof of the wearer’s skills such as bravery or knowledge of cult or ritual practices. The differences between the male and female mummies’ tattoos suggest some kind of gender or social system.

Other tattoos dating from later periods suggest that tattoos were eventually used as cultic symbols in ancient Egypt. In one case, archaeologists discovered more than 30 visible and diverse images, from lotus blossoms to the Eye of Horus, on the skin of a female mummy found in the Valley of the Kings. She is thought to have lived in the Ramesside period of 1292 to 1189 B.C., and researchers believe her tattoos show that she was a priestess or magician with a particular connection to the ancient sky goddess Hathor.

Tattoos in the Americas

Tattooing is thought to have been practiced across the Americas, from the Arctic circle to the south. One mummy from the Chinchorro culture in what is now Chile was once thought to sport the oldest known tattoos, a mustache-like set of black dots under his nose. That idea has since been debunked; more recent research revealed that the Chinchorro man died between 2563 and 1972 B.C.—and is therefore not older than Ötzi as previously believed. Either way, the reasons for his tattoo stump researchers since he is the only known mummy from his culture with one.

The “Toltec Mummy,” a woman thought to have lived around A.D. 250 in what is now Mexico, was discovered with complex tattoos on her forearm that reflect undulating geometric motifs common throughout the region. Though researchers can’t pinpoint the exact reason for the tattoos, they speculate they warded off sickness or were part of some kind of initiation rite. I

Tattoos in Ancient Eastern Europe

Members of the Catacomb culture in Eastern Europe from around 2600 to 2400 B.C. also had tattoos. Their mummified remains, found near the Sea of Azov in what is now Russia, bore plant-dye tattoos representing snakes that researchers believe were part of “sympathetic magic” practices and social roles.

Animal tattoos have also been found on the bodies of members of the Pazyryk culture, which emerged during the Scythians’ domination of what is now Russia between the sixth and second centuries B.C. These Iron-Age nomads lived in the Altai Mountains and depended on horses to live, and even die—they were buried alongside their horses, as in the case of an ice-preserved woman discovered in 1993 alongside six bridled and saddled horses. The high-status woman, along with other buried Pazyryk people, was covered in tattoos of complex horse motifs.

Some researchers believe the tattoos reflected age and social status, meaning that as one gained both they also got more and more ink. Psychology and animal studies specialist Gala Argent posits that the tattoos signified a personal connection to individual horses, and that they provide important evidence about how humans and horses interacted when they were alive.

Tattoos in Ancient Asia

Despite modern-day tattoo stigma in China, a variety of ancient cultures across Asia embraced the practice.

In China’s Tarim Basin, for example, the discovery of mummified bodies dating from between 2100 and 800 B.C. shows the prevalence of tattoos across a variety of cultures from the area. Most of those tattoos are located on the mummies’ hands, but tattoo historian Svetlana Pankova notes that a few have face tattoos. She has called for more research on the Tarim tattoos, claiming that with a re-examination of these bodies, “it is likely that many new tattoo discoveries will be made.”

Tattoos in Oceania

Despite the Tahitian origin of the word “tattoo,” archaeologists have found relatively little evidence of tattooing from ancient Polynesia—the tropics’ warm, wet weather doesn’t lend itself well to mummification. In 2019, researchers identified a set of tattoo tools made of human bone thought to date from the dawn of Polynesian culture in what is now Tonga around 2,700 years ago.

But scholars still aren't sure what kinds of motifs were preferred by ancient Polynesians or what the markings meant to Polynesians, speculating that they could have indicated belonging to a particular social group, rites of passage, or a desire to be protected from harm.

As French art historian Luc Renaut explains in an essay in Ancient Ink: The Archaeology of Tattooing, representations of “possibly tattooed” figures in ancient artworks offer a tantalizing view of even earlier tattooing practices. But “few survive close scrutiny,” and ancient artistic styles cannot reliably be interpreted as portraying real-life tattoos.
