Moving from your native country of Spain to Manchester in England with your fiancée Leila was a lot to get your head around.

Making paella was your absolute favourite, everyone loved it, even some of Leila’s english teammates that had came over one night who don’t really like seafood said it was to die for.

You had it in the large dish as Despechá began to play, it was your all time favourite song you couldn’t help but sing and dance along as you cleared up. The music was so loud you didn’t hear Leila come in, she was enjoying watching you move your hips along to the beat.

She returned in a hoodie, shorts and socks sitting opposite you, “I’ve been looking forward to this all day.”

You plated up both dishes, taking a mouthful of the seafood dish, “Bebé this is incredible.”

A massive smile appeared on your face as she took a second mouthful.

Once you’d eaten, you both decided to crash into your large bed and watch a movie,“What you want to watch?” Leila asked pulling you onto her lap.

“Desperado.”

“Your favourite.” The defender hummed into your hair.

As the movie played Leila began stroking your face, tracing your freckles embedded into your skin. Her actions tended to send you to sleep, you quickly rolled over so she would stop, “Y/N why did you move.”

“Because i would’ve fell asleep else.” You replied taking your sports bra off.

“What are you doing.”

“What i’m hot.” You shrugged going back to the same position you were in before, “You copying me now?”

She laughed taking her own bra off, “Maybe.”

Tattoos of the Near East and Europe

Knowing the full history of tattooing is practically impossible as skin doesn't usually leave a record of itself except in very special circumstances. Despite this, we do know that tattooing goes back quite a long time in human history and span almost every culture in the world. Joann Fletcher, a research fellow at the University of York in the United Kingdom, works with ancient Egyptian mummies, who were once thought to be the first group of people to tattoo because they mummified their dead. However, with the discovery of Ötzi the Iceman, that date was pushed back even farther because he was mummified by the cold, preserving his skin for 5300 years, about 1300 years before the earliest known Egyptian mummy to have one.

Ötzi's tattoos lead us to believe that they were for health reasons, to alleviate the pain of strained or degenerating joints. His tattoos were not placed in such a way that would allow for easy display of status, given they were placed over his lower spine and right knee and ankle.

Ancient Egyptians had figurines with tattoos as early as 4000 BCE and began representing them in tomb paintings around 1200 BCE and tools dated to around 1450 BCE were found near Gurob in northern Egypt. The vast majority of the people that were tattooed in these figurines and paintings, as well as mummies, were female and the tattoo was placed on their thighs, breasts, and abdomens. Because of the gender of the tattooed person and the archaeologists (largely male), for a long time, they were dismissed as 'dancing girls'. That the mummies were found in Deir el-Bahari, where the upper crust were berried, only managed to move the description to 'probably a royal concubine' (basically 'fancy' sex workers). However, Fletcher is of the opinion that these tattoos may have been a permanent amulet, probably tot aid in pregnancy and birth and possibly against sexually transmitted diseases. She also thinks that it was older women who would tattoo the younger women, perhaps as a way of passing down their own strength and fortitude to them.

This is in contrast to other cultures that used tattoos for decoration, though there is some evidence that there were therapeutic ones within the ones we've found preserved. Ancient Libyans were depicted by the Egyptians around 1300 BCE with male leaders wearing geometrical tattoos on their arms and legs.

The Scythian Pazyryk of the Altai Mountain region of Siberia also used ornate tattoos all over their bodies, including mythical creatures on both a male and female ice people. These mummies date to about 400 BCE. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote about the Scythians and Thracians that their 'tattoos were a mark of nobility, and to not have them was testimony of low birth'. This stood out to him because the Greeks and Romans only really used tattoos to show that someone 'belonged' to either a religious sect or a person, or had been a criminal.

Despite these leanings, Ptolemy IV of Egypt (reigning from 221-205 BCE) was tattooed with ivy leaves to symbolize his devotion to Dionysus, who was the patron god of royalty as well as wine at the time. This led to Roman soldiers also getting tattoos, at least until Christianity spread; then they were found again to be disfiguring and banned by Emperor Constantine.

The trend of Christianity spreading at the end of a sword or gun caused a lot of native cultures tattooing practices to be vilified.

Introduction

Mireya Moto Quinlan is the second member of the Roppongi Division rap battle team, Private Party. She is known by her rap moniker, Gypsy. A former dancer and stripper known for working in just one of the many bars in Sin City, this was just a stepping-stone on the way to fulfilling this spicy and determined young woman's true ambitions. After working and building up her career, she's now determined to prove that her self-owned nightclub/casino is the best, not only in Roppongi, but in all of Japan.

Mireya, much like her husband, is a woman of many origins, mainly Japanese and Hispanic. She has tannish skin, which she attributes to her black background. She has dark-brownish curly hair that goes down to the top of her back. She has light green eyes that are slanted, giving her a somewhat-tired look. She also wears a lot of make-up, giving her a younger look than her age shows; she wears pink blush on her cheeks and matching-colored lipstick. She stands at 5'7" and weighs 124 pounds. She also has a D-sized chest. Finally, she has two kiss mark tattoos, one on her neck, and one above her left breast.

When she is at home or lounging around, she tends to dress comfortably. She wears a plain greenish-blue blouse with a black leather jacket over it, a silver black necklace with a moon and stars charm at the end of it around her neck, a pair of dark blue slim jeans, a pair of black stockings and a pair of black Mary Jane shoes.

When she is on the job, she dresses more fashionably. Her attire usually consists of a red and black cut-off shoulder dress with a black feather boa over her shoulders, a pair of black stockings, and a pair of black heels. She also changes her hair color to golden blonde, giving her a more youthful look. Also, she has her moon wedding ring displayed on her right ring finger to show that she is happily "taken".

Mireya is an attractive woman who knows she has looks and knows how to use them. Being blessed with a good appearance since she was young, she learned how to utilize her charms from the woman who took her in after she ran away from home to get away from her mother and her lifestyle. Though she doesn't have to do much in order to get what she wants, she finds that exerting a little "influence" goes a long way at times.

As her quote can tell you, Mireya is not one to worry when the odds are stacked against her. She doesn't care what she has to do in order to achieve her goals, or further her ambitions. As long as it doesn't bring harm to her friends, family, her city or her way of life, then she will gladly do it. This mindset has been adopted due to the amount of opposition that she has been forced to overcome in her 34-year-old life. Whether it was her mother, her enemies, or just her self-doubt, she has always been counted out or looked over. While this would normally deter others, this only helps to make Mireya more determined.

A natural and charismatic leader, Mireya is usually the one to take the reigns when no one else will. She has no problem being put in the forefront, as that is where people will mainly be looking. The limelight for this woman is where she feels she is meant to be, and only when she is dead and gone will she disappear from. Maxine was destined to get involved with the seedy underbelly of NYC. While her mom worked nights, her dad took her to his job ; from a baby she’d been in a car seat while he beat people up for money, sold drugs, engaged in routine intimidation of local businessmen and politicians. It was a job the man was good at, so why stop doing it now? Why not let Maxine know that this was really how the world really worked. There were only two types of people; the strong and the weak. He asked Maxine, one day while doing her maths homework, what type do you want to grow into?

She chose to be strong.

It was the answer her father wanted, if he couldn’t have a son then Maxine would become one. She signed up for boxing, track, MMA, started to routinely bully kids for their money or lunches - when she got a little older, it transitioned into selling cigarettes and providing some of the meaner kids with needed backup when other schools came for events, or just turned up at lunch for a brawl. Thanks to her dads name, Maxine also got into underground fighting rings, lying about her age so she could take down women twice her age. The money got split, and she’d go get her hair done with it or buy some new sneakers. Questions were asked about her bruises of course but, the girl did so much sport there had to be accidents. Sometimes on the quad she got into fights but not so much anymore. There was an opportunity talked about; the Olympics. Maxine could get onto their training programme, maybe even the squad with a few years under their wing, groomed into a professional athlete. The teenager couldn’t wait to get out from Harlem, move onto better things. What made it better was that her father seemed to approve of this to - they’d have to work on Maxine’s discipline.

But, there was a secret the young girl couldn’t tell him. That was, that Maxine had discovered a secret talent, a hobby she enjoyed more than beating others up, than revealing in violence. Art. In secret, she worked on a portfolio. It was a backup, she told herself, just in case everything fell through, an apprenticeship in Portland. Except, when two opportunities came knocking at the same time, Maxine knew which one she’d prefer. Her father of course intercepted both, confronting Maxine about which opportunity would really get her out of their shitty neighborhood, and allow her to make a life for herself. All her life, she’d done what he wanted and in a fit of rage, she smacked her dad.

He went down, smacking his head open on the fireplace as he did so.

The decision was made for her then. The young woman covered it up, said she came home and found him like that. His line of work meant that he had plenty of enemies, nobody suspected Maxine. She moved out to Portland, taking up an apprenticeship for a tattoo studio and attending a local arts programme. America held too much pain, though, and after befriending a Japanese student, she would go to Kyoto to train under masters of the tattoo craft. Getting involved with low-level Yakuza only seemed to be a natural progression, especially after she stopped a local underboss from getting murdered at night on the streets. The fighting she’d left behind only followed her.

Years later, Maxine followed some members back to America, taking up shop at Yami Ink and still serving the Dead Hand even in another country.

Significant Background Events

PRE-2013:

Only aged 16 at the time of the outbreak, Tara grew up in an average middle-class immigrant household in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago. Tara was the third of five children, and was raised in a multi-generational home that included grandparents, aunts and uncles, and several cousins. Her early life was by all accounts pleasant. She enjoyed reading and writing, was an athlete of above-average talent on her high school’s track team, and had a close-knit group of friends. 

THE CHICAGO QZ 2014-2020:

As a resident in a large city, the events following the outbreak and leading to the establishment of the Chicago QZ were notably horrific. Several members of Tara’s family became infected, and others were lost in the subsequent bombings and chaos. When the walls of the QZ were at last erected, Tara’s large family had been condensed significantly to include her, three of her four siblings, her mother, and two uncles. 

Life under FEDRA proved difficult, and the Khalil family were subjected alongside many other civilians to long working days, limited rations, and cruel overseers. Tara’s younger siblings were enrolled in FEDRA’s schooling with the hopes of one day becoming soldiers, while Tara and her other family members toiled in more labor-intensive roles. Resentment and hunger became constant companions during these days, and anger slowly simmered throughout the city as whispers of a better life began to grow. 

UPRISING 2020-2022:

The Fireflies, undoubtedly seeing an opportunity to gain a foothold in a major city and unseat FEDRA, began to sow the seeds of unrest. A civilian uprising alongside Firefly members broke out, and war raged for the better part of two years as control for Chicago was wrestled over. Tara, who was in her early twenties at the time, was protected by her elder relatives as best they could, though she could not be shielded from the realities of war. It was during this time, with no other option available to her, that Tara learned to fear strangers and defend herself at all costs. 

Her younger siblings, who were essentially property of FEDRA, disappeared during this time period. Their whereabouts remain unknown to this day, though Tara has long-since presumed they died during the uprising. This was a time of excessive violence and fear, and additionally claimed the lives of one of Tara’s uncles and her mother. 

FIREFLY-LED CHICAGO 2022-2023:

After FEDRA was at last ousted from Chicago, the Fireflies took control of the QZ. A tentative peace reigned for a short period of time before those who’d participated in the uprising began to voice their desire to be controlled by no one – FEDRA or Firefly. Tara’s remaining uncle became a prominent voice amongst those who claimed that it was possible for the people of Chicago to govern themselves, and he assisted in instigating attacks on Fireflies. This eventually led the organization to pull out of Chicago. 

HUNTER-CONTROLLED CHICAGO 2023-2026:

Best-laid plans swiftly went awry, and it was not long before Tara’s uncle – alongside others who’d vied for power for the people – were killed. This brutal killing left Tara and her elder brother Omar as the only members of the once-large Khalil family left standing. Both siblings were forced to adapt to the chaos of what Chicago had become: they scavenged and stole, and killed before asking questions. They became versions of themselves they did not know they were possible of becoming, and convinced one another that they had no choice – that the only human parts of them left would be for each other. 

Eventually, Omar spoke of leaving Chicago in favor of finding a new place to call home – the city was low on supplies and increasingly at risk of attack by the infected – and Tara agreed. 

ON THE ROAD 2026-2033:

Tara and Omar encountered more of what they’d seen inside Chicago as they traversed the remnants of America: survivors who were willing to kill to live another day, and infected who only became increasingly monstrous as the virus raged through their decrepit bodies. They continued to act much as they had in Chicago: they took what they needed and did not ask questions. When the two bunked down for the evenings, Omar would often speak of his hopes for a better world – one almost like the one they’d known in their youth. Tara, disillusioned by all she’d experienced, was reluctant to believe that such a thing might be possible. 

Rumors of Jackson eventually caught the ears of the wanderers, and Omar insisted they travel West in search of the settlement. Tara believed it to be no more than a myth, but agreed nonetheless to go on the fruitless venture – believing if nothing else they might find a temporary home along the way. 

While en route to Jackson, Tara and Omar came upon a group of clickers while scavenging an old supermarket. In an effort to save Tara, Omar offered himself as a distraction, and was subsequently bitten. At his urging, Tara was forced to end his life. He made her promise to continue in search of Jackson before his death.

LIFE IN JACKSON 2033-PRESENT: Tara eventually found her way to Jackson. That the settlement was not only real but a veritable Eden seemed like a cruel joke to the woman who’d lost the one person she’d had left, who’d wanted nothing more than to find a little slice of the world before. Tara opted to stay in Jackson to fulfill Omar’s wishes, yet feels as though she does not fit in – she has seen too much and done too much, and cannot relate to those happy citizens who’ve found peace in the new world.

Tara has resided in Jackson for approximately 8 months.

She can be an intense person with an angry streak, so it will likely be easier for her to make enemies than friends.

The Ancient History of Tattoos—Revealed By Inked-up Mummies

Humans have been getting ink for at least 5,200 years. Here are some of the most intriguing ancient tattoos, from cultic symbols to complex horse motifs.

If you got a tattoo, what kind of ink would you choose and why? The answer might reflect everything from a spur-of-the-moment decision to a poignant tribute to a loved one. But you may not realize that tattoos have an ancient—and fascinating—history.

The word “tattoo” was imported into English thanks to Captain James Cook, who noted the practice, and Tahitian word “tatau” describing it, in Polynesia in the 18th century. But scholars agree that the practice far predates the word itself—and the skin of ancient mummies proves their point.

Who are these inked-up mummies, and what can they teach us about ancient cultures? Here’s a not-at-all exhaustive look at some of the most intriguing tattoos that archaeologists have found from the past and what they tell us about the ancient world.

Tattoos in Ancient Western Europe

The earliest evidence of tattooing is inked into the body of Ötzi the Iceman. Europe’s most famous mummy, Ötzi (also known as “The Iceman”) was discovered by German hikers in the Alps in 1991. Ötzi lived in Tyrol, a mountainous region that borders modern-day Italy and Switzerland, about 5,200 years ago, and after he died his body, and its tattoos, were preserved by ice and the elements.

Archaeologists have since documented 61 line-like tattoos on his body thought to have been created by piercing the skin and applying charcoal dust. Some of them were on areas associated with pain in aging like the knees and ankles, leading archaeologists to theorize that they were created during some kind of pain treatment. But other geometric tattoos on Ötzi’s chest suggest that tattoos had some kind of ritual, ceremonial, or even religious use as far back as the Neolithic age.

The exact meaning may be debated for the next five millennia, though, since researchers concede that without more evidence, there’s no way to know why Ötzi, or other Neolithic people, got inked.

Tattoos in Ancient Egypt

The next earliest evidence of tattoos comes from mummies thought to have died between 3351 and 3017 B.C. in ancient Egypt. Discovered in 1900, the bodies were found to sport tattoos in 2018, when researchers re-examined them using infrared imaging and found that what looked like smudging on the skin was actually body art. Their ink is the earliest known evidence of tattoos depicting images—including a wild bull and a sheep on the male’s arm, and symbols resembling the letter “S” and possibly a staff on the female’s arm and shoulder.

The images, which mirror motifs found in other ancient Egyptian art, are the first evidence of tattooing in Africa. Though researchers can only speculate on what the tattoos meant to their bearers, they could have been status symbols or proof of the wearer’s skills such as bravery or knowledge of cult or ritual practices. The differences between the male and female mummies’ tattoos suggest some kind of gender or social system.

Other tattoos dating from later periods suggest that tattoos were eventually used as cultic symbols in ancient Egypt. In one case, archaeologists discovered more than 30 visible and diverse images, from lotus blossoms to the Eye of Horus, on the skin of a female mummy found in the Valley of the Kings. She is thought to have lived in the Ramesside period of 1292 to 1189 B.C., and researchers believe her tattoos show that she was a priestess or magician with a particular connection to the ancient sky goddess Hathor.

Tattoos in the Americas

Tattooing is thought to have been practiced across the Americas, from the Arctic circle to the south. One mummy from the Chinchorro culture in what is now Chile was once thought to sport the oldest known tattoos, a mustache-like set of black dots under his nose. That idea has since been debunked; more recent research revealed that the Chinchorro man died between 2563 and 1972 B.C.—and is therefore not older than Ötzi as previously believed. Either way, the reasons for his tattoo stump researchers since he is the only known mummy from his culture with one.

The “Toltec Mummy,” a woman thought to have lived around A.D. 250 in what is now Mexico, was discovered with complex tattoos on her forearm that reflect undulating geometric motifs common throughout the region. Though researchers can’t pinpoint the exact reason for the tattoos, they speculate they warded off sickness or were part of some kind of initiation rite. I

Tattoos in Ancient Eastern Europe

Members of the Catacomb culture in Eastern Europe from around 2600 to 2400 B.C. also had tattoos. Their mummified remains, found near the Sea of Azov in what is now Russia, bore plant-dye tattoos representing snakes that researchers believe were part of “sympathetic magic” practices and social roles.

Animal tattoos have also been found on the bodies of members of the Pazyryk culture, which emerged during the Scythians’ domination of what is now Russia between the sixth and second centuries B.C. These Iron-Age nomads lived in the Altai Mountains and depended on horses to live, and even die—they were buried alongside their horses, as in the case of an ice-preserved woman discovered in 1993 alongside six bridled and saddled horses. The high-status woman, along with other buried Pazyryk people, was covered in tattoos of complex horse motifs.

Some researchers believe the tattoos reflected age and social status, meaning that as one gained both they also got more and more ink. Psychology and animal studies specialist Gala Argent posits that the tattoos signified a personal connection to individual horses, and that they provide important evidence about how humans and horses interacted when they were alive.

Tattoos in Ancient Asia

Despite modern-day tattoo stigma in China, a variety of ancient cultures across Asia embraced the practice.

In China’s Tarim Basin, for example, the discovery of mummified bodies dating from between 2100 and 800 B.C. shows the prevalence of tattoos across a variety of cultures from the area. Most of those tattoos are located on the mummies’ hands, but tattoo historian Svetlana Pankova notes that a few have face tattoos. She has called for more research on the Tarim tattoos, claiming that with a re-examination of these bodies, “it is likely that many new tattoo discoveries will be made.”

Tattoos in Oceania

Despite the Tahitian origin of the word “tattoo,” archaeologists have found relatively little evidence of tattooing from ancient Polynesia—the tropics’ warm, wet weather doesn’t lend itself well to mummification. In 2019, researchers identified a set of tattoo tools made of human bone thought to date from the dawn of Polynesian culture in what is now Tonga around 2,700 years ago.

But scholars still aren't sure what kinds of motifs were preferred by ancient Polynesians or what the markings meant to Polynesians, speculating that they could have indicated belonging to a particular social group, rites of passage, or a desire to be protected from harm.

As French art historian Luc Renaut explains in an essay in Ancient Ink: The Archaeology of Tattooing, representations of “possibly tattooed” figures in ancient artworks offer a tantalizing view of even earlier tattooing practices. But “few survive close scrutiny,” and ancient artistic styles cannot reliably be interpreted as portraying real-life tattoos.

That, along with a dearth of mummy evidence older than Ötzi, suggests that the true history of tattooing may never be fully uncovered. In the meantime, though, there’s plenty of ink to look for—and more to learn about a truly ancient practice.
