Makeup artistry is a huge part of movie-making. In recent years the Academy Awards Board has elected to broadcast the category of Best Make-up live. The category of Best Make-up has gone largely underappreciated and under celebrated. An amazing oversight when you consider what make-up can do for a film. Would we really have gone to see “Edward Scissorhans” minus the special effects makeup? I do…

Edward Scissorhands - review
Tumblr media
As we reach Edward Scissorhands 23rd anniversary, it remains one of Tim Burton’s most iconic and charming films.
We all know the story; A beautifully conceived ‘beauty and the beast’ fairy tale for the 1990’s that follows the story of an eccentric inventor (Vincent Price) as he lovingly assembles a Frankenstein-style man named Edward (Jonny Depp.) Unexpectedly the inventor dies, leaving Edward alone with scissors instead of hands that make it impossible for him to touch the things he loves. Despite this, he is a gentle soul whose only wish is to be loved. There is a tenderness in the romance between Edward and Kim (Winona Ryder) who initially sees him as freakish - through is drawn to his gentle character throughout the film. One of the most memorable scenes is Kim dancing in the snow as he uses his scissorhands to create ice sculptures. However, as Edward finds himself becoming a local celebrity, his new life and acceptance in the idyllic town turns sour and his innocence makes him a suspect for a crime he did not commit.
So what is it that makes this film so special? I, for one, am always fascinated by the visuals, with settings straight from the gothic imagination of Tim Burton. The pastel blues, pinks and yellows of the town houses create a goofy, storybook suburb scene, contrasted by the dark Victorian mansion at the top of the hill. The interior is nostalgic of the 1920’s film The Cabinet of Caligari, with its angular rooms, slanted windows and jagged shapes. This sets Edward in a fantastical world all of his own, one that is tangible to us but that we can’t quite enter. The acting is also part of what makes the film so memorable to me; Jonny Depp pulls off a multi dimensional character who we see through fits of rage and anguish as well as innocence, love and naivety. Despite only speaking 169 words throughout the film, he is able to express so much emotion through his eyes, expressions and body movements. He is a darkly sweet portrayal of adolescent angst, and we can all relate in some way to Edward’s social awkwardness and feeling of not fitting in. Diane Wiest as Edwards ‘mother’ figure succeeds in being funny yet still having emotional weight, being both a strong willed and soft character. Vincent Price is wonderful as ever, and the relationship between Edward and Winona Ryder’s character (Kim) is believable and has a lovely chemistry.
I personally think that this modern day fairytale succeeds as a sharp comedy and achingly sad romance. With an imaginative set design and spellbinding story, this is a wonderful work of fantasy that lives up to the spell binding works of Hans Christian Andersen, with it’s haunting power, dark romance and fascinating charm.  Tim Burton forces us to look further than what is skin deep and to see beauty in the grotesque. He notably said during an interview that the story of Edward developed as he was growing up in California, where he often felt misunderstood. The idea of feeling 'different' or alienated is an idea that is relatable to many teens and young people around the world, which is maybe why it is still so loved 23 years later. Edward Scissorhands isn't good. It's pure magic.
