Hello! Great website! I ask you two questions: the first: do you know old italian movie La Corona di Ferro (aka The Iron Crown)? is this movie based on old fairy tales? there's some similarities with Fantaghirò, Desideria and others Lamberto Bava's serials. Do you know more? The second: I know Ladyhawke is based on old Italian and French tales and legends. Do you know more about it? what's tales and legends are at the basis of the movie?

1) I admit, I've never heard about The Iron Crown ("La corona di ferro", Italy, 1941) before but it looks interesting. Unfortunately, I don’t know any extra information about it, other than what is on Wiki page...  I found the film on YouTube here, does anyone know if it’s available somewhere with English subtitles?

2) Regarding Ladyhawke’s origins: I am afraid that I, personally, have never dug deeper into the story behind Ladyhawke. However, this blog has! The short version is that, apparently, the story of Ladyhawke was invented by the film’s screenwriter and the myth that it is “based on a 13th-century French legend” was just a part of marketing for the movie.

Screenwriter Edward Khmara’s explanation:

"The story of two lovers kept apart by taking human form only at opposite times of day was an inspiration that occurred to me while jogging on the roof of the Hollywood YMCA. The studio contention that "Ladyhawke" is based on an old legend is, in fact, a violation of Writers Guild rules, since it denies me full rights of authorship. The Guild undertook an action against Warner Bros, on this account ... and a small amount of money was paid as compensation ... Warner Bros.,  or its publicity department, continues to circulate material restating the old legend story. The inspiration for the character of Phillipe the Mouse was Francois Villon. His "Testament" recounts his imprisonment and mistreatment by Bishop Thibault d'Aussigny, in the dungeons of Meung. When the Dauphin, soon to be Louis XI of France, passed through Meung on his way to the coronation, he freed the prisoners, including Villon. This incident was actually used in the original story of "Ladyhawke."

The science fiction film was based on Barry B. Longyear’s 1979 novella of the same name. It was written by Edward Khmara and directed by Wolfgang Petersen. It starred Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.

Fun fact: Four hours were needed to apply the makeup to Louis Gossett Jr. in order for him to become Jeriba Shigan.
