#Staff Picks | Ed Moses, Bad Cubis-1, 2014 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The legendary Ed Moses passed away on January 17th, just a few months shy of his 92nd birthday. He was a force of nature and one of the most authentic and inspiring people I've had the honor of knowing. Always open to chance and change, the only plan or preconception he adhered to was to have none at all. He once said, "I don't believe in change--I believe in mutation, and every painting I make comes out of the painting that preceded it. What I want to do is hang out with the materials until something appears that I had nothing to do with." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This approach flies in the face of convention. Moses pushed the boundaries of his abstract expressionist practice by joining gesture with ordered structure, yielding an uncanny strength and vitality in the tension between the two. He worked through repetition, pattern, geometry, light and surface animation resulting in an unbelievably wide-ranging output executed over a 6-decade career--from intricate pencil rose drawings, enigmatic grids and cubes and minimal monochromes to swirling gestural compositions and wild textile pattern paintings. He was never one to be aligned to any singular aesthetic. He was a self-proclaimed "mutator", but above all he was a visionary and an innovator. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Temma Nanas, Managing Director Artwork info: Ed Moses, Bad Cubis-1, 2014, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 48 inches ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #edmoses #moses #stafffavorites #monthlypicks #staffselections #legendary #legend #mutation #painting #painter #losangeles #laart #laartscene #laartist (at Leslie Sacks Gallery)

These days, it's always good to remember our friends. Here with my delightfully cranky, pugnacious, competive, and dear, sweet friend Ed Moses. When he walked into the room, he parted the waters. Here with me at my "eyehand" exhibition at LA Louver Gallery, Venice, CA 19 Nov 2011 - 14 Jan 2012 https://www.petershelton.com/Exhibitions/eyehand-2011/1/capt April 9, 1926-January 17, 2018 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Moses_(artist) There will come a time when the improvisational jazz nature of Ed's work will get sorted, assessing a lot of work as absolutely brilliant, some excellent, some soso, some borderline, some embarrassing, some really terrible. At a distance, Ed knew well the difference and could criticize and sort his own work. But Ed, while in the grip of the moment of painting, was mindless and instinctual. He could get seduced by a gimmick or the superficial. But then he'd get swept away by the multifarious ferocious gods of his Tibetan Buddhism where he swirled, swooned, splashed, slipped, slid, resisted, and collided with a cacophony of dissonant impulses that strove to reconcile and distill and destroy the obvious and easy. Ed hated the word creative. It suggested to him something self-conscious and outside of the moment. Ed was at once volcanic and serene. In color and gesture, he tested his love of beauty with with large doses of ugly and incredulity. When the curatorial reckoning comes to cull his best works which are so many, Ed will surely be fixed as one of our greats. While I mourned the loss of John Baldessari and in his world and amongst his many progeny, he was surely a titan of postmodern cool and irony. He will be dearly missed. But in this pervasive time of post-Warhol dispassion, Ed Moses was not cool or ironic in the least. He was our painter at the heart of the Beauty and the Beast. Ed was hot as hell! I miss his beautiful and complicated soul and his hand on a brush. #edmoses #sculpture #contemporaryart #contemporarysculptor #contemporarysculpture #petersheltonscuptor #petersheltonsculpture @petersheltonsculptor @petershelton.com @petershelton @sheltonbigart #bigart #sheltonbigart (at L.A. Lately I was trying to paint with my son. I'm not a painter and have not had any practice before. So all I expected was a colourful mess around, including floor and table. What's happened was really a colourful mess, but suddenly I felt much better. These paints combinations, spots, stripes, circles, that we draw on the paper were a sort of therapy. Especially first lines on white paper. It was a miracle for both of us. And then I've found this painting. #EdMoses - Honk n1, 2017, acrylic on canvas. Similar joy form it. Bright colours and white space that adds volume to the paint scream. #todaythoughts #findings #contemporaryart #modernart #drawing #morningmood (at Moscow, Russia)
