10) What is something you really want to write but haven't written yet?
I always have more ideas than time!!! The current longfic idea that has been sitting in outline form for a while (and which I'm continually plinking away at) is a FONV/FO4 crossover where the Legion's destroyed Jacobstown, leaving Keene to flee across the wasteland with the rest of the nightkin and mutants. He's the last survivor, holed up by raiders...and then Preston Garvey and the Minutemen come blazing in for a rescue.
Basically: a prickly and traumatized asshole slowly learns to deal with survivor's guilt, grief, and learning to trust again. He ends up BFFs with Marcy Long (another survivor of a massacre) and falling in love with Preston. There's some specific scenes I have in mind for it (like accidental sex pollen while exploring a vault, because I desperately want to write them fucking WHILE pining!) and eventually culminating with Preston getting kidnapped and Keene rescuing him at the end. Something something. Raiders. Guilt. Grief. Recognition that we can always change for the better. Red Tourette blaming the Minutemen for her sister Lily's death. Keene blaming himself for grandma Lily's death.
...basically it's a big emotional stew right now and I need more time to figure out the narrative chain that links to the final scene. I'm confident I'll write it eventually, but it's still in the planning stages. Gotta get my writers' mise en place...well, en place.
3) What is something you learned/researched while writing a fic?
For A Most Edible Thistle, most of the lore was stuff I already knew! I listen to a lot of podcasts about food and love reading stuff, so I was already thinking about food as a way of showing culture, trade, and political influence, so most of the 'research' was just refreshing things I had already aware of.
I was trying to lean into Thedas food cultures, and that Antiva was inspired by Spain, while Rivain was inspired by Morocco, which was my thought process in having halva and preserved lemons as part of Rivaini cuisine, and the shift from the broad cultural feast at the beginning of the book to something more specific to what would be Josephine and Vivienne's home cuisines. (Even if Vivienne doesn't necessarily remember this as a child herself, it's more about her being willing to eat this in front of other people rather than making herself as Orlesian as possible.)
And while this wasn't research for this fic in particular, I was also listening/reading a lot about Chinese-American food traditions and the way 'American Chinese' food is as much as distinct cuisine based on historical immigration trends as well as more 'traditional' Chinese foods, and how inheritors of 'tradition' still end up adjusting to locally available ingredients and tastes. (Ex: my mother made chow mein with spaghetti while growing up. I still do it sometimes even when I have access to 'real' chow mein noodles because it's a taste of childhood. Just the other night I made a cacio e pepe variation using Korean chili flakes and gochujang instead of black pepper because it was what I had in my pantry and I liked the flavors, never mind that I'm not Korean or Italian.) Except I decided that having Chef Robin explain all this over cooking lessons or discussing recipes would be far too anvilicious and distract from the actual romance arc or food crime plots!
And not 'research' as in reading a how-to per se, but I did read a lot of romance novels, and was thinking in terms of commonalities and beats I wanted to hit in this fic. So in that sense, reading romance novels was research for writing my own romance novella!

I'm having the hardest time getting together with this one friend group. Friend 1 is my best local friend and I have the most fun when we do solo stuff, but friend 1's partner, 2, just has less in common with me. That is fine, 2 is fun and cool, but I really dislike their friend 3, who always also gets invited. It's starting to rub me the wrong way. It's a trend that I'll make plans with 1 & 2, then 2 will reach out and ask me if 3 can come like an hour before our plan.
3 completely throws off the dynamic to the point that I don't even enjoy my time with 1 & 2. For example, I had a friend in from out of town and I invited 1 & 2 to come swim with us at my client's pool. 1 & 2 brought 3, who didn't make any attempt to speak to my special out of town friend, be friendly to them, really talk to any of us but 2. At one point we were all hanging out and 3 walked off and straight took a nap by the pool? It felt super awkward. Like do you not wanna be here? Why did you come??
I think the solution is that I need to do more things and specify that I only want to see 1 & 2, and that any more than those two people feels like too much right now. But 1 & 2 themselves are also not respectful of the fact that I live across town from them and usually have to drive 40 minutes to hang out. Like I'll have already driven to their neighborhood then suddenly they won't be ready to hang out for another 90 minutes because of some miscommunication or something.
And a lot of times the things I wanna do are things that 3 legitimately does not like (they're not interested in ANY movie genres I care about and that's 99% of my personality, and they don't really enjoy being outdoors which is the other 1%). But 3 apparently wants to come along anyway, and they sit there silently which pings me in all the wrong ways. And fuck I've done a lot for 3 when I think about it! Bought food for the group many many times, gave them tons of edibles on different occasions bc I didn't want them to feel left out from smoking/drinking (they do neither), even brought them back a present from Colorado this summer bc I felt weird getting presents for 1 & 2 but not 3. None of this has ever been reciprocated so I guess I should quit doing that shit!
I just!!!! Want my friends to consider me more! I don't like constantly canceling on them. It makes me feel like a flake and a bad person. But the last time I was with all three of them, I literally sat there thinking that I'd be having more fun sitting in traffic by myself than trying to make a conversation work. And I hate that. 1 has been in my life for a while and we've been through some shit and we're not the type of friends who say "i love you" to each other a lot but we do! So stop treating me as an afterthought, or whatever is happening!!

- His response to the egg.  “yes. edible.” is a weird reaction to pieces of his body flaking off. And not better explained by any broader trends we’ve seen with egg infection. 
- His actions towards Ponk, not simply cutting off his arm, which Sam articulated understanding was worse than taking a canon life, but his surprise that Ponk didn’t get “over it”. 
- His apathy towards the loss of Hannah’s wings, as though he couldn’t understand why they were important.

Fancy Nancy
People have called me that my entire life.  Mostly because it rhymes, but  occasionally because it suits me.  There’s a big difference between fancy and high maintenance.  I’m not the latter, but I do like to make things fancy.  Why make lemon cupcakes when you can make pink lemonade cupcakes decorated with sugared lemon rind and edible glitter?  I enjoy my meal more on a pretty placemat with a contrasting napkin (if it’s floral and gingham I swoon).   See what I mean?  I don’t put the burden on anyone but myself. But I’m getting sidetracked - this post is about jewelry. Cheap jewelry.  
I mentioned before Christmas that I was trying my hand at making earrings with polymer clay. It is SO much fun, and though the learning curve is steep, even mistakes are wearable.  I’m finding that this prolonged pandemic is the perfect time to debut my homemade finery because I can keep people 6 feet away - if you don’t look too closely my creations look great.  I’m  currently practicing blending clays, creating patterns, and what works and what doesn’t.  I’ve learned that when trying to establish a crisp pattern that you can make it, then chill your clay like cookie dough before slicing and baking.  Brilliant!  Just today I learned that if I lay plastic wrap over my clay before using cutters I’ll get cleaner edges.  Every day I learn a bit more and improve the end product, but my mistakes are piling up.  I’m too frugal to just throw them away, so I wear them.  If you gaze upon my accessories from a distance you’ll think I look fabulous.
Today I had to drop off a return at the UPS store and pick up an order at Target.  After a series of drab days I decided to pop on a bright pink sweater  and these kooky earrings.

As you can see (up close) I haven’t filed the edges smooth, and my color lines didn’t stay as crisp as I’d like. Still, these took me right back to my early elementary school days when my career goal was to be a go-go dancer on Laugh-In.  I still remember my 1st grade teacher’s reaction when we were all polled regarding our future plans. Going down my row...fireman, teacher, soldier, nurse, “I want to dance on Laugh-In.”  If she’d let me I would have demonstrated.  This was the same teacher who had to call my mom at work when I smuggled my cat into school, so she didn’t leave the door open for a performance.  Spoil sport. Back to the earrings though- they’re making me happy during these gray days of January.  I’ve been on a kick adding gold flake to everything.  FANCY!!

I can make things fancy for years with this stash!   Today I tried making leopard print with clay and I wasn’t satisfied with it.  I’ll try again tomorrow, I think I know where I went wrong. Even though I didn’t create a masterpiece I spent a wonderful hour playing with clay and listening to a murder podcast.  That’s good for my soul (the creativity, not the murder). I still have this collection of misfits to try to fix.  They all need the edges filed  and I may be able to cover some mistakes with metallic leaf.  Can’t hurt, right?

I still haven’t invested much in this hobby.  I received some excellent tools for Christmas- an acrylic roller, some cutters, etc.  Love them. Women who make these to sell have tiny drills for making holes and electric buffers for the edges.  I’ll stick with my nail file and my little hole poker for now.   They get the job done and remember, these are socially distant earrings.  Pandemic glamour.  Covid Vogue.  I’m starting a new trend of Stay-Away-From-Me-Fashion.  I have piles, I mean mountains, of baked pieces that I haven’t assembled yet. I’ll have earrings of every color and shape for the rest of my days. I need to find clip backs for child-sized earrings so I can make some for my grandgirl who is full-blown Fancy Nancy.  She’ll be four in just twenty-eight days and she is crazy for jewelry, makeup, and fancy dresses.  I’ve never been more excited about a child.  I can’t get up there fast enough.
If you are even slightly inclined to give this whole polymer clay thing a whirl, I encourage it!  If you’ve got an oven and an imagination you can have some fun.  I’m still in the early days of learning this craft, but I’m having a ball. A square of clay is around $3 and you can get dozens of earrings out of it.  You don’t have to stop there.  I saw an Instagram post of some gorgeous beaded bracelets made from polymer clay.  Oh, the possibilities! Alrighty, I’ve bored you enough for one evening.  I’m going to put my hair up, run a bubble bath, and use a face mask.  The mister is watching a football game (college championship?) and I’d rather chew tin foil than join him. It’s the 4th quarter, if I stay in the tub long enough I can miss the whole thing. If you read this far give yourself a cookie.  You deserve it.
