AU concept: Dead Queer Boy Eye
The cast:
(All cast ages are how old they are for season 1)
Edwin Payne, 34, design specialist. Grew up in a wealthy family that couldn't make space for his autism, went through a period of acute depression as a young adult as a response to the trauma of constant homophobic & ableist bullying and masking in upper secondary. Occasionally socially awkward but covers it up with faux arrogance. Meets Charles during compatibility tests for Queer Eye and falls in love instantly.
Thomas King, 36, grooming expert. Grew up in Port Townsend in a working class family with four siblings (he's the middle child), also faced some bullying. Got into theatre and make up young, moved to London for a job on the West End and never left. Met Charles in the Tube when Charles helped him shake off a guy who didn't like that he was wearing a skirt.
Charles Rowland, 34, food & wine. Ran away from home at 16 to escape a violent home, met Crystal Palace soon after and ended up having a son with her at 18. Extremely repressed bisexual who only really accepted his sexuality around age 27-28, in great part through his friendship with Thomas. He hasn't had any contact with his parents since he left them.
Niko Sasaki, 33, fashion expert. Japanese young man who studied in America from high school on and made his business first as a personal shopper and then as the founder of a clothing line. Comes out as a trans woman after the second season of the show and stays as part of the cast afterwards. Bonds with Edwin over both being autistic.
Mick O'Leary, 55, culture/life coach. Licensed therapist from a long line of longshoremen and also a leather daddy who was a pillar of his local queer community and believes he can help more people through participating in the show. Also in charge of a 3mn Queer Culture segment at the end of each episode. Adopts the others like the kids he never had.
The plot:
It is the second episode of season 3. The hero of the week is a heroine: Ms. Amarita Sandhu*, 54, nominated by her 18 year old daughter Diana. Amarita moved into the neighborhood two years ago following the death of her husband, who was the love of her life, and immediately became invaluable to the ageing residents of her street. When she isn't working as a secretary in the local doctor's office, she helps her neighbours with their groceries, cleaning, and personal lives. Outside of that, she mostly stays home and cleans or watches TV on the couch, or goes for an early night. Amarita's old hobbies all involved her husband and she stopped practicing them when he died, which makes Diana worry that she will be even more isolated once she leaves for university in the autumn. The Fab Five's mission this week is to help Amarita network outside of her neighbourhood!
The Fab Five meet a new hero, and none of them is as shocked as Charles when it turns out that Ms. Amarita Sandhu was once better known as Mrs. Mary Rowland. It's lucky Charles can rely on his colleagues and friends, especially Edwin, even if he can't help but get a little overwhelmed everytime Edwin hugs him better.
* The maiden name Sandhu is an homage to Halcyon Days by cordelianoir on AO3 which I encourage you to go read.

Through the cracks
https://ift.tt/5Zg6IEJ by captaincornwall And, look, Edwin was a grown up. He had dealt with character bleed before: the way the lines become blurred, when you spent all your working life falling in love with someone, and then had to go back to being pals the moment the curtain fell. He knew how to deal with it – mostly. But with Charles, something was different. Charles didn’t seem to think that Edwin was strange or cold or withdrawn. He looked at Edwin with big shiny eyes and hung over his shoulder to share a bag of crisps and ruffled his hair and said “You’re brills, you are”, and Edwin’s lonely little heart did a shuddering flip, and that was it. He was fucked. WEST END AU. Charles and Edwin meet when they're cast as the leads in West End Hadestown. Things deteriorate from there. And that’s a wrap on Agent Carter Bingo! I may not have gotten as much done as I would’ve liked, but it was still great to finally get a chance to make stuff for these characters/ships that I love so much. If this runs again in the future, I will definitely take another crack at it, lol.
Many thanks to the @agentcarterbingo mods for running this event!

Rating: G cuz I got nothin.
Word count: 873
Summary: Winry wheedled Ed into trying out for the musical with her. He agreed, assuming he could back out after auditions. And then he got the lead. OR Putting the drama in drama class, ft. pettiness, stage kissing, and applying stage makeup for friends that are totally just friends
Winry ran up to Edward, gasping for breath and grinning. "Ed! Did you see the cast list yet?"
Ed frowned. "Cast list? I thought I'd be able to back out after the stupid audition."
Winry groaned and rolled her eyes. "Back out? No, dummy, if you audition, you're asking to be considered for a role, and you take what you get. Now are you going to look or do I have to give you the news myself?"
"What do I care? It's not like I got anything special. I wasn't even trying that hard."
She put her hands on her hips. "So you're telling me that you weren't even trying at the audition and somehow got the lead?"
"I what?!"
"You got the lead, Ed! You're Curly!"
"No! This is all a big mistake! I don't know how to act! And who wants to play a guy with a stupid name like Curly, anyway?"
"Like, every guy that tried out," Winry said bluntly.
"Ugh, this is gonna be a nightmare. What about you, gearhead? You're the one who actually wanted to try out. Did you make it in?"
"Oh, I'm just one of the extras, but I'm not complaining too much. I've got so much homework from my A.P. classes, I hardly even know left from right anymore. Having that many lines to memorize probably wouldn't be good for my health," she said with a laugh.
"But you were actually trying out seriously! And I've heard you sing. If I had any say in it, you'd get the lead role, not me," Ed huffed.
"I'm not that good, Ed. Besides, it's way harder to get any kind of lead as a girl."
"Why?"
Winry sighed. "You know nothing about theatre, do you? Barely any guys ever try out, but there are always a ton of girls."
"Their loss, then. You're going to be an amazing whatever-you-are."
"Well, I think you're going to blow everyone away as Curly. At least, as long as you actually try to do a good job," she said, raising an eyebrow.
*****
"I still can't believe Brother is actually in the musical. I didn't think he'd touch the theatre department with a ten-foot pole," Alphonse remarked. "Have you gotten the scripts yet?"
"Yeah, we just got them yesterday," Winry said. "I take it he hasn't even looked at the script yet?"
"If he has, he hasn't told me," Al sighed. "So...I don't know about the stage version, but I know in the movie for Oklahoma!, they kiss. Are we gonna tell him or just let him find out when he reads the script himself?"
"They WHAT?!" Ed screeched as he whipped open the door. "Nope, I'm not doing it. I don't care what Ms. Catalina says. I'm not kissing some random girl!"
Winry dragged a hand over her face. "Ed, can you not be stubborn for once, if that's all it is? Ms. Catalina's got enough on her plate as it is without you making the rehearsals more complicated. It's not like this is the only class she teaches. I know it's not ideal, but it's just a quick peck. Unless...are you nervous because it's your first kiss or something?"
"No! It's not my first—ugh, fine, I'll do it. But it doesn't mean I'm not gonna wanna vomit afterwards." Ed averted his eyes as the color on his cheeks betrayed his feelings.
"As long as you stay in character, no one's going to complain." Winry shrugged, then fully processed what he had said. "Wait a second, what do you mean it won't be your first? Who else did you kiss?"
"Don't—dont worry about it. I said I'd do it. Anyways, I've got a lot of calc homework. I'll be in my room," Ed stuttered out.
If Winry didn't remember, Ed sure wasn't going to tell her. It's not like it counted for much, anyway. They were only seven, after all. At seven, no one can turn down a double dog dare, and Russell laughed at Ed right after he did it. But even so, Ed couldn't help but kiss her softly.
He vaguely remembered Russell sneering in the background, "Oooooh, I knew you had a crush on Winry! Wait till I tell Fletcher!" Ed would have chased him down and tackled him, too, if Winry's face hadn't made him pause.
Even ten years later, Ed couldn't forget how her little mouth formed into an 'o' as her eyes opened wide and her cheeks that were still a little chubby turned pink. Of course, he'd been a coward and run away right after that, but he remembered it all the same.
Did he want to kiss her now that he was in high school? Of course not—probably. Well, it'd at least be better to know what he was dealing with. Known factors and all that. What if the girl who played Laurey was a super slobbery kisser? Yuck. Even worse, what if he was the bad kisser? Maybe he should research how to be a good kisser… So that he would be good at his role, of course. Yeah. It was going to make for an awkward browsing history, though. Maybe he should go incognito…
A/N: It was supposed to be short. And then I finished this part and stopped and said "this is almost scratching 1k and I've barely even started it yet. This is just gonna be a multichapter now." Might only be two chapters, but we'll see...
#fma#edwin#fma fic#my fic#my writing#EdWin theatre AU#cuz that's how i'm gonna keep the chapters together. that tag.#except i'm probably gonna succumb to the need to link it in each chapter because tumblr's tagging system sucks that much...

Tagged from @hopebunnywrites! I just didn't want to be a dash hog by keeping ten reblogs in 😅
2.
Favorite color: keeps changing. depends on the shade. I think soft yellow is really underrated.
Currently reading: uhhh various fanfics and webtoons... I need to finish the most recent update from True Beauty!
Last song: Dope by BTS
Last movie: uhh I think Jungle Cruise? It was better than I expected, I'll give it that. Also the dad jokes were bomb.
Last series: as far as TV goes...idek. Downton Abbey if you count me being secondhand invested via my mom putting it on while I'm around and Fruits Basket if it's for my own sake I think.
Currently craving: sugar. in nearly any form.
Coffee or tea: tea. I can't stand the taste of coffee unless it's in a coffee product in which I cannot taste the coffee aka something that's more sugar or milk than anything else
Currently working on: posting the first chapter of an EdWin high school theatre AU!
3. Zodiac palette that I literally had to Google because I don't take much stock in astrology:

Gian Lorenzo Bernini, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, 1647-1652, Cornaro Chapel, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome.
The following is a brief clarification of a series of ten padded paintings of floating heads I fabricated in 2018 after Bernini’s Ecstasy of St Teresa (1647-1642). I employ extracts from my The Art of Man Ray (Edwin Mellen Press, New York, 2018).
St Teresa’s description of “transverberation” relates to female “enlightenment”, which is a linking of the womb and the heart and is radically different to male enlightenment, which links the genitals and the brain. The latter is often described as the opening of the thousand-petaled lotus atop man’s head. Both the female and male experiences supposedly meld sensual and spiritual occurrences, where matter and spirit become one.
St Teresa of Avila’s experience of transverberation was achieved only after long sessions of physical suffering. She describes it as an ecstatic linking of the heart and womb. She said:
It pleased the Lord that I should sometimes see the following vision. I would see beside me, on my left hand, an angel in bodily form—a type which I am not in the habit of seeing, except very rarely…He was not tall, but short, and very beautiful, his face so aflame that he appeared to be one of the highest types of angel who seem to be all afire. They must be those who are called cherubim: they do not tell me their names, but I am well aware that there is a great difference between certain angels and others, and others still, of a kind that I could not possibly explain. In his hands I saw a long golden spear and at the end of the iron tip I seemed to see a point of fire. With this he seemed to pierce my heart several times so that it penetrated my entrails. When he drew it out, I thought he was drawing them out with it and he left me completely afire with a great love for God. The pain was so sharp that it made me utter several moans; and so excessive was the sweetness caused me by this intense pain that one can never wish to lose it, nor will one’s soul be content with anything less than God. It is not bodily pain, but spiritual, though the body has a share in it—indeed, a great share.1
Bernini’s Baroque marble, life-size, carvings of the saint and cherubim is the central sculptural tableau situated in an elevated aedicule in the Cornaro Chapel of Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome. Although the Teresa group is often pictorially reproduced, the two theatre boxes of male witnesses observing her ecstatic swoon, located on either side of her, are not.
Patriarchal society has traditionally mistrusted women who like St Teresa have experienced “headlessness”.
Between 1936-1939 Georges Bataille, Curator of Oriental Coins at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, saw published a magazine entitled Acéphale. Today Bataille is credited with being a major contributor to Surrealist thinking, advocating in his writing male transcendence through the violent suppression of the female, and as a curator of ancient artifacts had access to material others didn’t. He and his close friend Michel Leiris moved in artistic circles and influenced a number of them including a major figure such as Picasso.
Acéphale was a Gnostic god of magicians, who was directly linked with the Egyptian Set and his solar counterpart Horus.2He was a god of empowerment who could render men immortal.3When headless, or ass-headed, he represented male and female principles, or darkness and light in a single body, as well as the triumph of life over death through resurrection.4He is often depicted wielding his detachable phallus or “fouet”. In the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead he is described as:
Un lion puissant, aux plumes élevées, qui possède la double couronne et est armé du fouet…Tu possèdes un phallus fort au moment du lever (du soleil), luminaire qui se lève sans limites. Tue es celui qui revêt des apparences multiples, et qui se dissimule à ses enfants, l’intérieur de l’oeil (du soleil).5
Bataille’s Acéphale, as seen in his magazine, when not headless was depicted as bull-headed and synonymous with the Minotaur . Thus Bataille’s god, who could assist sorcerers’ apprentices to become masters of magic, symbolized male solar empowerment through the experience intérieure. Bataille’s cover version of Acéphale as drawn by André Masson was a headless, human form; the head reappears as a skull in the place of the genitals. Apart from the bull-headed version, another image from the journal shows Acéphale/Dionysus with Medusa’s castrating head in place of his genitals. The exposed abdomen reveals the intestines in the form of a dodécadale labyrinth. According to Allen Weiss: The Acephale is a contestation of the Platonic body politic, where reason, seated in the head, rules the lower spirited and appetitive forces.6
In his left hand he holds a sword which signifies violence and power and was the instrument which decapitated the god, cut out his heart (held in his right hand), and lacerated the abdomen to expose the labyrinthine section of the viscera. Weiss continues: The paths of chance are indicated in the center of the figure of the Acephale, where intestines in the form of a labyrinth are revealed. The labyrinth, equivalent to the Nietzschian sign of earth, is an all-encompassing signifier, embracing every contradiction and possibility from the chaotic to the structured, the aleatoric to the necessary, the sacred and the profane, and from life to death.7
The purpose of such single-line labyrinths is not to get lost, but to persevere in the difficult quest, for it is through the difficulty of the quest that the contradictions or opposites are reconciled. Bataille clarifies:
He (Acephale) reunites Birth and Death in the same eruption. He is neither man nor god. He is not me but is more me than myself; his abdomen is the Daedalus in which he himself loses his way, misleads me along with him, and within which I rediscover myself as him, that is to say as a monster.8
This total man (Nietzschian Übermensch) that Bataille speaks of is the monster in oneself which must be sacrificed within the Labyrinth. This interior experience entails loss of identity and dissolution of the self which enables the self the opportunity of an indefinite series of identities and transformations. This process gives the creative male the power of Eternal Return.
Thus it seems when the female is masked or headless she becomes the catalyst for the male to see the face of the god and initiates the transformational process. Hence even an undated and hastily scribbled over sketch like Esquisse d’un centaure found in one of Picasso’s sketchbooks, where a horse-headed, not ass-headed, female whose hands are tied behind her back, would appear to be replete with layered meaning. Meanings seemingly unrelated to quaint picturesque images of mythology, but personal, pictorial keys or triggers to male empowerment through violent suppression of the female. The “rubbing-out” of the figure equates with Man Ray’s Nu voilé .
Ecstasy stems from the Greek ek, out, and histani, to place, which means to stand outside oneself, to be beside oneself with joy, to stand forth naked.9Out-of-body experience is linked with madness because one loses one’s head. The Surrealists often depicted headlessness, particularly of women. Sidra Stich in Anxious Images states:
And though the bodies show considerable development, the figures carry only the most embryonic of heads, or no heads at all, thereby displacing emphasis from the intellectual realm to the corporeal, sensorial realms. Without heads or reduced heads, the figures no longer offer evidence of their superior status. On the one hand this lowers and declassifies them from an exclusively human rank, and on the other, it devalues thinking itself.10
Rosalind Krauss in the Optical Unconscious argues that in The Phenomenon of Ecstasy (1933) Salvador Dali rotates the women from a vertical to a horizontal state in order to represent ecstasy, and equates them with the hysterical “falling” women the Surrealists were so fascinated and obsessed with observing, and thereby lowering their status from human to animal.11She also equates the labyrinth, the home of the Minotaur to horizontality.12The labyrinth is a female domain and with patriarchy seems to have become an artificial womb, or bachelor machine, where man gives birth to himself. It became the birth place of heroes. The original myth is a Cretan one and we are told that the labyrinth was designed by Daedalus, who had been taken in by King Minos after escaping Athens. Daedalus designed the labyrinth in response to Queen Parsiphae having had sex with the white bull. The issue of the coupling produced the Minotaur. The labyrinth became the monster’s prison. The minotaur fed on human flesh and the Athenians were obliged to send regular tributes of young men and women. Ariadne fell in love with Theseus, who was a member of the final tribute and requested Daedalus’ assistance to save her lover. He gave her a ball of string. Theseus entered the labyrinth unraveling the string, killed the Minotaur and retraced his steps by rolling up the string again, and exited the treacherous labyrinth by the same way that he had entered. The labyrinth appears to be a transformational place of empowerment, where men can give birth to themselves as heroes. Krauss is correct in highlighting the horizontality of this action, because Theseus exited the artificial womb a new man, a superman, but still left the same way he had entered. However, according to the myth Daedalus himself and his son Icarus were imprisoned in the labyrinth by Minos when the king realized Ariadne had escaped to Delos with Theseus. How would this punish Daedalus when he had designed the labyrinth and held its key? It would seem that the labyrinth also stands for the birthplace of male genius, because Daedalus and Icarus escaped vertically into the air by constructing wings of wax. Unfortunately Icarus wasn’t brilliant enough, because his wings melted and he plummeted to his death, whereas Daedalus flew off to further adventures.13
Justine does not experience her clairvoyant visions horizontally, but vertically, she is a pendu femelle and a veritable goddess. However, just like Ariadne she remains an object of exchange and a muse, or conduit operating between male polarities. She hangs between God and Seabrook, while Ariadne is the lifeline between Daedalus (genius) and Theseus (hero). Justine (a young woman who participated in William Seabrook’s experiments who was photographed by Man Ray) does not experience her clairvoyant visions horizontally, but vertically, she is a pendu femelle and a veritable goddess. However, just like Ariadne she remains an object of exchange and a muse, or conduit operating between male polarities. She hangs between God and Seabrook, while Ariadne is the lifeline between Daedalus (genius) and Theseus (hero).
There are numerous examples of photographs in Man Ray’s oeuvre of nude women with their arms raised, so much so it could be seen as a signature pose for the artist. In terms of body language this gesture appears to be very meaningful for Man Ray. It has been demonstrated above that he uses the raised arms in images ranging from constructing the head of the minotaur, to a nude whose head is solarised and thereby uses the arms as a framing device to further isolate the lack of head, to images where the head is in shadow and looks non-existent, to documenting Seabrook’s SM sessions of hanging women. Clasping the hands behind the head is a gesture of confidence and superiority, whereas fully raising the arms above the head is a universal sign of surrender or abandonment. In both situations then, raising the arms is a gesture moving from a symbol of self-empowerment to one of relinquishing power totally. In terms of the foregoing analysis it seems a short distance from raising the arms/surrender to tying and dangling. There are also a number of images by Man Ray, always of females, where the arms have been removed completely. Vénus restaurée, which is a cast of Venus DeMilo, is armless, legless and headless, but it still appears vital for the artist to restrain the cast with a rope binding it, similarly to Enigme. Lee Miller in a still from Cocteau’s film Blood of the Poet (1930), Nude (circa 1930), the four shots of Nude Female Torso, (circa 1930), all share being deprived of their arms. Man Ray achieves the illusion of armlessness in Figures 60 and 61 by carefully encasing the models’ arms in a dark fabric, so when photographed against a dark background the arms disappear, just like the masked heads do. Figure 62 is entitled Statue et Tête (c. 1921) where the artist grafts a living head to the armless, legless Venus plaster cast. Either way, whether the women’s arms are raised or cut off, it seems that for Man Ray, Seabrook and other creative men, such actions are about disempowerment of the formidable Other, and these visual gestures co-inside and correlate with André Masson’s 1928 design for de Sade’s Justine, where the practice of algolagnia and female sufferance and suspension generate erotic release, transcendence and fulfillment in the male, whether she goes “through the wall” or not. Sometimes it seems such games get out of hand, as is testified by a police photograph of one of Jack the Ripper’s gutted victims of a pendu femelle, used to illustrate Maurice Heine’s “Regards sur l’enfer anthropoclasique”, published in Minotaure, of an imaginary conversation between a professor, the Marquis de Sade and Jack the Ripper.14Thus, as Georges Bataille proposes throughout L’Érotisme, female passivity and sufferance are the catalyst for male transcendence and are directly linked with death.15
If Bernini’s Saint Teresa was devoid of drapery, Dali’s women had bodies, and Duchamp’s Bride of the Etant donnés was accessible, their reclining, relaxed abandonment, would be similar to the mannequins produced by Clemente Susini (1754-1814). His didactic, life-sized, anatomical models are as realistic as was possible in his day. They have human hair, glass eyes and at first glance are highly erotic images of nakedness, rather than nudity. His Statua Scomponibile wears only a pearl choker.16Her supine body lies on soft cushions and loose drapery, her slightly parted lips look moist and kissable; her eyes are vacant and half closed; her nipples, erect. She is made of wax and her body colour is life-like, exhibiting the glow of health and youthfulness. She does not display the pallor of death. When her almost heaving breast is removed, one can access her exposed viscera. Susini’s Statua della Sventrata is similarly seductive. The right leg of the reclining, languid blonde, is slightly raised; her expression is vacant and her cheeks are flushed. Her partially braided hair carefully frames her fully disemboweled entrails.17This bizarre object is distinctly sexual and reminds us of the concept of “woman-as-shit”: woman as the source of warmth, heat, gestation and fecundity, here displaying not only her dissected uterus, but also the organ wherein the process of transmutation is completed, i.e., the labyrinthine bowel. Both models recall Ernst’s Anatomy of the Bride, where the inquisitive male has cleared out all the female’s internal plumbing in search of what makes her tick. La Sventrata, in particular, is reminiscent of another photograph used by Heine illustrating his Minotaure article, where we see the remains of Jack the Ripper’s sadistic and frenzied excavation of the Other. Thus we see what results if Saint Teresa’s male inquisitors, or Seabrook and Man Ray’s observational probings had expressed their curiosity in an even more aggressive and socially unacceptable manner. Furthermore, it leaves the impression that Duchamp’s second Bride would appeal to necrophiliacs in her invitation to join her in her eroticized dance of death.
Woman as muse elevates her, but disconnects her from the process of making art, her role is to inspire great works in men. Patriarchal fear of the Other, creates a special place for her power. It is the elevated and untouchable position of the Virgin who conceived immaculately, who hovers in the sky, the pendu femelle, suspended somewhere between heaven and earth. Antonius Andreas von Kresimowsky’s 18th century illustration, entitled Christliches Wanders-Mann (1756), demonstrates that Virgin-Ariadne-Muses such as Justine/Renée/Janet (Seabrook’s helpers), can survey the pitfalls of the man’s journey from her elevated, clairvoyant position, allowing her to guide her male charge, with her “super-vision”, to the centre of the labyrinth, the place of his rebirth as immortal hero. That Kresimowsky follows a patriarchal model can be deduced from the observation that the feminine hovering presence acts as the conduit between male god, depicted as the eye in the triangle, and the journeyman she guides through the earthly maze, while she floats in no-man’s land. On reaching his goal and absorbing his guide’s power, he returns the same way, having symbolically given birth to himself. It is a model of the male’s quest for immortality.
Man Ray participated in the Ariadne syndrome and demonstrated his nervousness in relation to female creators by depicting Meret Oppenheim as a phallic woman. Moreover, he played a crucial role in introducing Dora Maar to Picasso.18Ray clarifies that Picasso rewarded him with a signed copy of Minotauromachy, arguably the most complex and layered of Picasso’s images about himself as Minotaur.19
Jean Franco, in Plotting Women, demonstrates that female ecstatic desire was directly linked with female self-creation, and equivalent to the hero’s troubled journey towards immortality. The ecstatic or hysterical woman gives birth to herself as does the hero in the labyrinth. The female’s blissful soaring appears to be no different from the male’s, in that both are an escape from the self. Patriarchal systems may acknowledge that the female appears to be more gifted with the ability to experience visions, raptures and revelations, but because males interpreted these experiences, they were also perceived as extremely dangerous.20Franco, citing a Mexican inquisitor states:
Since women are not only weaker and more susceptible, but are humid, crass, and viscose by nature, and because this temperament are not only subject to lunatic impressions, but are easily overcome by passions of hatred, love, happiness and sadness.21
The knowledge gained by female mystics was not male intellectual understanding, it was a bodily sensation as Saint Teresa pointed out. Franco continues: Transported in dreams and visions beyond the narrow confines of the cell, the mystic flew across time and space, beheld the future, and was allowed to penetrate the secrets of purgatory and heaven itself, before returning like a homing pigeon to her cell. This flight was the feminine equivalent of the heroic journey of self-transformation, with the difference that it met no obstacles and was less a narrative than an epiphany. The epiphany, however, tended to make the mystic mute and secretive.22

The Vrystaat Arts Festival has an enormous artistic offering in 2019. From flagship Afrikaans, English and Sesotho theatre and music productions to experimental dance, craft, sound art, visual art and live art, there is something for everyone.
International Engagement
The Festival is now one of the key arts festivals on the African continent and offers a significant range of national and international work in an astounding range of genres. In addition to a large contingent of South Africans artists, the festival this year hosts creatives from afar away as Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Caribbean, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Senegal, Singapore, the UK, the US and Zambia (to name but a few).
First Nation Protocol
The Vrystaat Arts Festival is the first South African cultural entity to follow Khoi-San protocol, recognizing the First Peoples and traditional owners of the land in public platforms and the festival program. The First Nations Welcoming ceremony of the festival is fast becoming an event unique in South-Africa. To that extent we are also honoured to have South African First Nations poet Diana Ferris as the Vrystaat Literature Festival’s Sol Plaatje keynote this year.
Performance and Music
The flagship theatre production is Kamphoer, the story of Susan Nell. Played by Sandra Prinsloo, and directed by Lara Foot, the play is based on a true story set in the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). Prinsloo skilfully embodies the enigmatic figure of Nell, who was brutally raped and left for dead in the concentration camp in Windburg.
The Island, directed by Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha also debuts at the festival. Written by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, this apartheid-era drama, inspired by a true story, is set in an unnamed prison based on South Africa's notorious Robben Island. This production has an all-female cast with Jane Mamotse Mpholo and Michelle Joubert in the lead roles.
The National Afrikaans Theatre initiative (NATi) also presents two of their flagship productions Katvoet with Marius Weyers, Marion Holm, Tinarie van Wyk Loots, Albert Pretorius, Martelize Kolver and Geon Nel, and My Seuns with Sandra Prinsloo, Louw Venter, Sandi Schultz, Edwin van der Walt, Buhle Ngaba and Donovan Pietersen.
The Vrystaat Arts Festival is also extremely privileged to have one of Nigeria’s most celebrated dancers/choreographers Qudus Onikeku with his renowned work Spirit Child. Spirit Child is a solo piece with three musicians, inspired by Azaro, the main character in Ben Okri’s novel, The Famished Road.
Other dance productions include the NATi funded experimental dance work Tehuis by Mark Anthony Dobson and the ever-popular flamenco dances Spanish Fire – Flaming Feet and La Femme! Also keep an eye out for the popular Reza de Wet youth theatre festival with performances from all over the country.
Music lovers will find a number of offerings including a short opera, Menotti’s The Maid and the Thief, 40 Fingers with Charl du Plessis, Classica, ’n chamber quartet from the US, Flying Fingers from Bloemfontein and Most Magical Musical Moments with Niël Rademan and the soprano Lynelle Kenned.
Amanda Strydom entertains with Stadig oor die klippers and South African rock icon Karen Zoid is in the mix with The Parlotones, Spoegwolf, Heuwels Fantasties, Andile Qongqo, Asanda Mqiki, Jak de Priester, Anna Davel with a Shirley Bassey- tribute, Jannie du Toit and Drie van die Bestes (Mathys Roets, Danie Niehaus, Kevin Leo). All the Way from Bloem, led by Jacobus Silver also provides upcoming Free State artists a platform to shine.
Live Arts
The Programme for Innovation in Artfrom Development (PIAD) is an interdisciplinary and experimental art programme in partnership with the University of the Free State and funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation in New York. The two key PIAD festival artists for 2019 is South African Marius Jansen van Vuuren and Australian Paul Gazzola. Their project We Can Be Heroes looks to the sky as the site for innovative ephemeral art, and inspired by the Southern star patterns, imagined worlds and local mythologies, will charge the untapped potential of the festival skyline.
Other live art projects include The Vertical Journey - a tribute to the still unknown by Marcus Neustetter, which will launch a series of planetarium dome short films accompanied by live improvisations at the Naval Hill Planetarium; the interdisciplinary performance/sound art work miss/seen by Sonya Rademeyer, Kagiso Kekana and Nosipho Mtaban; and Lo-Def Film Factory by Francois Knoetze, a pop-up experimental filmmaking and film screening booth.
Ukuzibuyisa: giving myself back to myself by Ukhona Ntsali Mland is a site-specific performance in response to the societal expectations on womxn’s lives; LATROP : The People Who Were Too Much, by Scott Eric Williams & Dr Julia Drouhin involves kids workshops, Zine making and radio antenna drawings; and Tok Tokkie by Lorin Sookool, Jarrett Erasmus, Ella Ziegler & Andrei van Wyk activates audiences in public and private spaces through surveillance games.

Betwixt & Between in the Scaena foyer curated by Karen Brusch is an exhibition by artists from the Free State Art Collective in response to their liminal experiences of living in the Free State. At Oliewenhuis Art Museum Reservoir, the project titled #i by Jodi Bieber combines portrait photography, visual research, interviews, text, digital photographic collage and design, and Blood Relatives, also at Oliewenhuis, is a body of work created in 2005, by renowned photographer, Cedric Nunn.
Film
Many different stories from all over the world may be experienced in the films at this year's festival. Following requests after last year's film programme two films with a gay subtext are included this year – the controversial South African film The Wound and the moving Heartstone from Iceland. And don't forget the transgender heroine of A fantastic woman from Chile. The romantic at heart, especially if they love music as well, should not miss Cold War from Poland. And with regard to First Nations, Australia's Sweet Country is a riveting experience. An opera is included again – Donizetti's comical Don Pasquale with soprano Eva Mei and conductor Gérard Korsten who performed in Bloemfontein last year.
Vrynge
As a platform for emerging artists and professionals interested in testing new work, this year Vrynge hosts many talented local, national and international creatives. From Brighton (neXus) to New York and Italy (Before you fall asleep), the Caribbean (Caribbean Cool), and the Netherlands with Lot Vekemans working on her new play Blind, the Vrynge is a small world in one. hey! so i've only listened to a few musicals and i really want to listen to more, do you have any recommendations?
Absolutely! I’m not sure what sort of shows you like, or what you’ve already heard, so I’ll just list some of my favorites. If you prefer a different genre/style, or if you already know too many of these, feel free to ask again! Also, I’m on mobile, so forgive me for not putting any links to the soundtracks, but I’m pretty sure these should be available on YouTube/Spotify/Apple Music/something.
My all-time favorite musicals that have stuck with me my whole life are “Rent”, “Les Miserables”, and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”. All of them have movie adaptations, and all of them have full bootlegs on YouTube (way better than the movies tbh).
My current obsessions are “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812”, which I’ve been blogging about obsessively, and “Hadestown”. If you haven’t listened to “Hadestown” I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s a folk music telling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, and the music is hella gorgeous. There’s a full concept album with famous folk singers, and a 4-song EP of the Broadway recording, which is going to be released sometime this year (@warner music WHEN????? WHEN????????????). Beautiful music, beautifully diverse cast, classic story. Amazing.
If you want something lighter and funny, I really love “The Drowsy Chaperone”, which is about a middle-aged theatre nerd taking the audience through the soundtrack of his favorite show. My other favorite comedic musical is “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”, which is a murder mystery where the audience gets to choose the killer.
On the other end of the spectrum, “Parade” and “Ragtime” are absolutely beautiful shows that deal with racism, antisemitism, and hate crimes in American history (specifically the early 20th century). They’re emotionally difficult, but they both have some of the most beautiful music ever written imo.
If you’re interested in French musicals by any chance, I am obsessed with “Notre Dame de Paris”, “Romeo et Juliette”, and “Mozart l'Opera Rock”. Honestly, France has way cooler musicals than we do. And they’re famous stories, so it’s easy to follow along if you don’t speak French.
And lastly, there are two lesser-known gems that you might not be able to find quite as easily (I know they’re both on Apple Music, but to get them for free I had to go to the library). “Fortress of Solitude” is a gorgeous modern show that covers disco, soul, R&B, hip hop, and rock music. And “It Shoulda Been You” is honest-to-god the heterobaiting-with-queer-endgames, fake marriage au, ‘acts like an old-school musical but everyone is secretly gay’ delight that I’ve been waiting for my whole life. 💜😊💜
#these are all pretty modern so there's not much variety#but lbr old musicals are racist as fuck#good music#but hella racist#sorry if this is a mess!#let me know if you'd like more specific or organized recs!#Nykeigh answers#anon
