Per Ed Greenwood, Waterdeep is a bonkers 1.3 million+, including its outlying farmlands, which is like. Height of imperial Rome. Alexandria. Medieval Baghdad. They've got about 150k in the city proper, which is medieval Paris and regarded as the City in Faerun. Just like, for relative reference.
But more to the point, it seems like Menzo is one of the last ones standing. Maerimydra, Ched Nasad, Eryndlyn, and Llurth Dreier were all victims of various in-world crises and/or edition changes when WotC was playing Calvinball with the drow pantheon.
its funny how menzoberranzan is seen as like Drow New York City when the populations 20,000

Gathering the Hunt Part 6
Er not much to say here, hope you've all had a good day?
Bard's Note: Thank you again to @theshapeshifter100!
---
Ivy’s face twisted in anger and she stormed out of the house, marching up the main road until she reached the inn.
She went into the stables and began getting Firefly’s tack ready. The horse shifted, tail swishing and ears flicking, excited about getting out of the stall.
Her saddlebags were left in her room and once she spotted a black dot in the sky, she rode Firefly out of Begdor, towards the northeast. As soon as they left the town Ivy kicked her loyal horse into a gallop, and she obliged.
The wind streamed past as Firefly’s hooves pounded the earth. They flew past trees just taller than Ivy was sitting on Firefly. Otto skimmed their canopies, flying level with them and cawing in delight.
Firefly could keep going like this for hours, but they didn’t. Ivy pulled her to a trot as they came to a stream, then a walk. Then, they stopped and Ivy dismounted. She walked over to the edge of the stream, and stood there for a minute.
Ivy grabbed a stone from the water and flung it as hard as could, sending it sailing past the stream and over the ridge opposite. More stones followed, one by one, until a patch had been cleared from the stream and Ivy’s throwing arm burnt.
She sat down heavily on the bank, and Otto perched on her knee. Firefly grazed nearby and drank from the stream as Ivy thought.
Now that she worked off some of her anger she could think clearly. This was a fools errand, she knew that. Getting to the Fae Realm would be the hard part. Training, learning to enchant, that she could do herself. Getting to the Fae Realm, that would be tricky.
It would also be risky. She accepted that. She had accepted that ever since Jen had been taken. She was an adult, she had been responsible for her own safety for a while now, she could be responsible now.
But, what to do now?
She needed to train her magic. How? She would have to focus on what she felt in a fight she guessed, then learn to summon those feelings on command. There wasn’t really another safe way to do it.
She also needed to research. Research enchantments, and probably the Fae Bands of Fasithe, just in case something came from it. If her mother was from there, maybe she could use family connections?
Ivy felt a small stab in her gut. Her mother had never mentioned her family before. She had questioned it a few times when she was younger, but had accepted it years ago, under the assumption that she was a Changeling and wanted to keep it private.
Old questions brewed; were her other set of grandparents still alive? Did she have aunts, uncles, cousins? There was a whole family history she knew nothing about.
Focus
Ivy took a deep breath and brought her thoughts back to where they should be.
The Scholar’s College should handle Fasithe, the Mages’ Guild the enchantments. If all else failed, the archives at the Roosts and Fort Stiofán must have something.
Ivy breathed out long and slow. Having a plan, no matter how vague, felt good.
She also needed to get back to work. It would give her the ability to train without prying eyes, or hurting anyone.
Ivy nodded to herself. Yes. She should leave for Fionport within the next day or so, and when she could, head to Monacoil, training all the way.
It could be done. It would be done. Hopefully the research into Fasithe would yield something about the Fae Realm that she could use.
Simpler for now. Her brain reprimanded. Foinport, StiofĂĄn, Monacoil. Maybe the Roosts.
That was the plan, and she would go through with it.
She waited until the sun started to dip before leaving. While she was known for her explosions of anger, Charles was one to let his anger simmer. She needed to wait longer for him to cool off.
She rode back at a more sedate pace, giving Otto a treat for being so good. Firefly got one when they got back to the inn and the tack was off.
Finally, at sundown she knocked on the door to Mags and Charles’s home. Charles opened the door, and his face went blank.
“Ivy.”
“I’m sorry for not telling you,” Ivy opened with.
“I don’t think you are. I think you’re sorry you got caught.”
“Okay, fine, I stand by my reasons for not telling you,” when Charles scoffed Ivy talked over him. “I also didn’t want to get your hopes up, or freak you out. You’ve got a good life here, and have other things to deal with. I don’t want to upset that or make things worse.”
Charles put his hand on his face and breathed heavily.
“This is an insane mission you want to do.”
“Yes.”
“Are you still going to do it?”
“Yes.”
Charles sighed again and dropped his hand.
“I can’t stop you, can I?”
“No.”
“What’s your plan?”
“Go to Fionport tomorrow or the day after for the Scholar’s College, go to Fort Stiofán to get back to work, train on the road. When I’m next near Monacoil I’ll go to the Mages Guild and read up on enchantments.”
“You at least have a plan,” Charles nodded, before stepping back to let her in. “We’re just setting up for dinner.”
“Thank you,” Ivy stepped inside. Everyone was already in the kitchen, and Cyril looked over and shook his head when Ivy came in.
“Ivy-”
“You can’t stop me.”
“Then know that I tried,” he shook his head and flicked his eyes over to Ed. The sandy haired boy looked a little pale, but otherwise alert and talking with Yarra as he cooked. It took a few seconds for Ivy realise why her father wasn’t starting the argument again and looking at Ed.
“Hey Ed,” she went over and sat next to him. He looked at her and frowned.
“That’s Yarra’s seat.”
“I’ll move in a minute. I just wanted to see if you were okay.”
Ed’s face turned in on itself for a moment before rapidly signing. “Fine.”
“I’m sorry about earlier.”
“It’s okay.”
It didn’t seem fine, but Ivy didn’t know how to continue, so she just moved to another seat, and the family had a nice, if awkward, family dinner.
Ivy left a little early, and Charles stopped her at the door.
“We’re heading to Iolla Cliffs in a couple of days, with father going home tomorrow. Do you plan to be there for that, or
?”
“Since I’m going in nearly the opposite direction, no. I’d probably better leave tomorrow as well.”
“Well, aren’t you going to say goodbye then?”
“I will, and would definitely have done if you hadn’t sprung this on me now!” Ivy laughed before coming back in.
“I’ll be heading to Fionport tomorrow,” she announced to the room.
“Makes sense,” Cyril shrugged, “I’ll be heading home tomorrow as well, but we won’t be going the same way.”
“Am I the only one who didn’t know this?”
“It seems so,” Mags smirked.
“Going already?” Ed looked so comically disappointed, “Not going to come with us?”
“I’ve got other things to do. You guys enjoy yourselves, and the puppies,” Ivy smiled, and Ed smiled right back and gave her a hug. “Especially you Mags.”
“Yeah yeah, never could resist cute animals,” Mags smiled.
“Animals are known to make you feel better,” Cyril looked pointedly at everyone.
“Yes father, we know,” Charles sounded like he was rolling his eyes. “It’s not like you haven’t been talking about it ever since we mentioned it!”
Ivy snorted in laughter and peeled Ed off before giving Yarra a hug, slowly followed by everyone else.
“Safe travels, see you soon.”
“You too,” was the response.

Day 28 of the First Annual Watch AU Prompt List!
Unconfirmed Rumours
(Day 28 of @thewatchau‘s annual prompts!)
Living in House Schneeplestein and House Jameson kept Charles out of the line of fire over the years. He heard things, about the raids on House Brody mostly. You’d hear the town criers calling it, read it on the boards, or just overheard it while and about.
It was easy to ignore, so easy then. Even with the Second Famine, easy to pretend it was a mundane plague, not anything to do with The Enemy like people claimed.
He’d heard there had been an attack on Iolla Cliffs, and felt like his blood had frozen solid. That couldn’t, no, not a chance. Not this far south and east.
It had to be just a rumour, it didn’t fit with the pattern of attacks at all.
Maybe that was the point.
To make it ever worse, as if it wasn’t bad enough already, Mags was there.
It was a hospital in the attack. He should feel bad about that, but he of course he was worried about Mags. She shouldn’t be any near it, but

Charles paced around the house, which he knew freaked out the boys because it usually Mags who did that. Aswulf stuck close to Yarra and Ed clung to the Changeling’s other side.
“Pa?” Yarra asked.
“I’m sorry,” Charles made an effort to stay still. “I’m just, worried about your Ma.”
“It was a hospital, not the barn,” Yarra was trying to be the voice of reason, and Charles felt awful that he had to be that voice. Other than Aswulf, Yarra was the youngest one in here.
“I’m sorry boys. I’m sure your Ma’s fine,” he walked over and held his hand to Ed, who took it and hugged Charles. His other arm went out and Yarra joined he hug.
“She’ll be fine,” he said, mostly for himself. “She’ll be home safe and sound.”
She came back, safe if rattled.

LĂ©on-Gontran Damas
Tumblr media
LĂ©on-Gontran Damas (March 28, 1912 – January 22, 1978) was a French poet and politician. He was one of the founders of the NĂ©gritude movement. He also used the pseudonym Lionel Georges AndrĂ© Cabassou.
Biography
Léon Damas was born in Cayenne, French Guiana, to Ernest Damas, a mulatto of European and African descent, and Bathilde Damas, a Métisse of Native American and African ancestry. In 1924, Damas was sent to Martinique to attend the Lycée Victor Schoelcher (a secondary school), where he would meet his lifelong friend and collaborator Aimé Césaire.
In 1929, Damas moved to Paris to continue his studies. There, he reunited with CĂ©saire and was introduced to Leopold Senghor. In 1935, the three young men published the first issue of the literary review L'Étudiant Noir (The Black Student), which provided the foundation for what is now known as the NĂ©gritude Movement, a literary and ideological movement of French-speaking black intellectuals that rejects the political, social and moral domination of the West.
In 1937, Damas published his first volume of poetry, Pigments. He enlisted in the French Army during World War II, and later was elected to the French National Assembly (1948–51) as a deputy from Guiana. In the following years, Damas traveled and lectured widely in Africa, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also served as the contributing editor of PrĂ©sence Africaine, one of the most respected journals of Black studies, and as senior adviser and UNESCO delegate for the Society of African Culture.
In 1970 Damas and his Brazilian-born wife Marietta, moved to Washington, D.C., to take a summer teaching job at Georgetown University. During the last years of his life, he taught at Howard University in Washington and served as acting director of the school’s African Studies program. He died on January 22, 1978, in Washington and was buried in Guyana. Although the political aspect of his poetry held less appeal in the later years of the twentieth century, Damas’s reputation was on the rise. His poems, which sometimes experimented with typography and with the sheer sound of words, were astonishingly modern for their time, and they seemed to foresee the black poetry, both English and French, of a much later timeframe.

Cosi’ fra le sequenze piĂč entusiasmanti citiamo in apertura Black Swan, Harrowdown Hill e Pink Section e in chiusura Truth Ray, Traffic e Twist.

Behind The Album: Kid A and Amnesiac
Kid A
The band's fourth studio album was released In October 2000 via Parlophone Records. After the tour for their 1997 album OK Computer, the entire band suffered from essentially being burned out. Singer Thom Yorke actually became physically ill due to the stress from the album. Bass player Colin Greenwood would say that the entire group felt that everything they had done previously needed to be changed completely. Ed O’Brien had hoped that the next record would consist of guitar-based songs, but Yorke was having none of that. “There was no chance of the album sounding like that. I'd completely had it with melody. I just wanted rhythm. All melodies to me were pure embarrassment." The front man believed that too many groups were imitating their music creating a background noise he would label as fridge buzz. “I always used to use music as a way of moving on and dealing with things, and I sort of felt like that the thing that helped me deal with things had been sold to the highest bidder and I was simply doing its bidding. And I couldn't handle that." He was suffering from extreme writer's block, eventually giving up on writing any songs with his guitar. The singer believed that rock music represented something that had died, and he just wanted to do something different. In his time at Exeter University, Yorke had been a dj, which led him at the time to start listening to groups like Aphex Twin and Autechre through Warp Records. He would comment, "It was refreshing because the music was all structures and had no human voices in it. But I felt just as emotional about it as I'd ever felt about guitar music." Thom would buy a home in Cornwall, so he began walking around the water and the cliffs surrounding his new home. The only instrument he worked with around that time was his piano, which led to the first song he wrote for the album “Everything in Its Right Place.”
Work began on the album in January 1999 in Paris with producer Nigel Godrich. They had attached no deadline to the release, which was fine with EMI due to the success of OK Computer. The singer still suffered from writer's block as recording began as most of the songs were quite incomplete with only a few rhythms attached to them and almost no choruses. The lack of content created problems for the other band members because previously they had used all of his work for a source of inspiration. The group began to experiment with a variety of electronic instruments like modular synthesisers and ondes Martenot. They also started to employ software such as ProTools and QBase. The rest of the band had issues with the new direction Yorke was taking them. Jonny Greenwood thought that it could possibly end up representing “nonsense,” while Colin Greenwood believed that much of the material from Warp seemed very “cold.” Another frustration for the group came in the fact that they were not sure how to contribute creatively now. Drummer Phillip Selway almost immediately considered walking away from Radiohead. Producer Nigel Godrich questioned Yorke’s motives, wondering why he would move in such a drastic new direction, if the previous one had been so successful. The new electronic instruments also caused issues because there could be almost no collaboration while working on them. Yorke described the process, “We had to develop ways of going off into corners and build things on whatever sequencer, synthesiser or piece of machinery we would bring to the equation and then integrate that into the way we would normally work." The group then moved to a studio in Copenhagen, Denmark for a couple of weeks followed by a studio in Gloucestershire, England, which would produce about 15 minutes of music, but no finished tracks. By this point, Radiohead was growing quite exasperated with the record, which led to an agreement that if they could not find an album worth putting out, then they would break up. They now moved on two its brand new studio in their hometown of Oxford for the remainder of the record. In January 2000, Godrich began an experiment to split the band into two groups in order to work on the tracks electronically, but without any use of acoustic instruments. This process convinced them that they could be successful with the new direction.
By April 2000, they finished recording 20 tracks. The band members thought about a double album, but instead opted to release the leftover tracks for a second record. The next crisis came in the selection of the tracks, as well as the order. Thom Yorke would go on to say that a great album does not necessarily mean all of the best songs. “You can put all the best songs in the world on a record and they'll ruin each other.” His reference point for this philosophy came from the later Beatles albums. The arguments over the tracks got so tense that once again breaking up became a serious consideration.
Kid A combined electronica, 70’s rock, jazz, and obscure hip hop from artists including Aphex Twin, Can, Charlie Mingus, and Mo’ Wax. The song “How to Disappear Completely was influenced by Jonny Greenwood’s favorite composer, Krzysztof Penderecki. Thom Yorke described the vision he held for the song “Idioteque” as “an attempt to capture that exploding beat sound where you're at the club and the PA's so loud, you know it's doing damage.” “Motion Picture Soundtrack” had been written very early in Radiohead’s career, even before their hit song, “Creep.” An attempt was made for the song to sound like a 1950’s Disney soundtrack. Throughout the record, Radiohead tried to combine their jam sessions with electronic computer editing inspired by German rock group, Can. Although the guitar had been minimized on the record, you can still hear it on tracks like “Tree Fingers.” For the entire album, Thom Yorke’s voice was drastically modified using a vocoder filter through Pro Tools. For the lyrics on the album, Yorke took a different approach to creating the words. He cut up words on a table, then rearranged them randomly combining them in unique ways. Inspiration for this method was the 1980 Talking Heads album, We Remain in Light. “When they made that record, they had no real songs, just wrote it all as they went along. Byrne turned up with pages and pages, and just picked stuff up and threw bits in all the time. And that's exactly how I approached Kid A." The entire band looked upon the lyrics collectively as part of a collage, so for that reason they were not included in the liner notes. Yorke did not want listeners to focus solely on them. The song “Everything in Its Right Place” was inspired by some advice given to the singer by REM singer Michael Stipe, while the track “Optimistic” emphasized other advice given to him by his partner, Rachel Owen. The name of the album Kid A originated from the label of a computer file the Radiohead frontman found during recording. For the artwork on the cover, Stanley Donwood used knives and sticks on a very large canvas, then edited it digitally in Photoshop. The theme of a mountain range actually originated from him spending a lot of time looking at statistics on the World Watch Institute site about the polar ice caps melting and its effect on the weather. The red swimming pool on the spine of the CD and the disk itself came from Brought to Light by Alan Moore and Bill Sienkiewicz, a 1988 graphic novel. In that book, the number of acts of terrorism by the state is measured in the amount of blood in swimming pools.
Anticipation for the release of this album was very high everywhere. Spin called it the most anticipated album since Nirvana’s In Utero. For their part, Radiohead did almost no traditional promotion whatsoever for this album. They did no interviews, no singles, no advance copies. Much of the decision to not do any promotion actually stemmed from Yorke wanting to avoid the stress of it, not for any artistic reason. Any advanced listening of the album would only be allowed under the condition that the entire album be played, not a track or two. The band wanted to present the record as one collective whole, which is ironic because in just a few years the $.99 iTunes track structure would become prevalent everywhere in the music world. One way in which they did promote Kid A was on the Internet. The decision to do so showed the band as ahead of its time because artists were not promoting online in the year 2000. At that time, most artists still promoted their records through MTV and the radio. One of the ways in which the album got heard came in the file sharing service, Napster. Yorke would say that the site “encourages enthusiasm for music in a way that the music industry has long forgotten to do.” EMI seemed unconcerned whatsoever with the group putting the album on Napster or their control of their website with random content like the teddy bear. This logo would become a trademark of the band in years to come. Stanley Donwood had come up with the idea because he had first drawn them for his children about bears with pointy teeth, who grow up to eat the grownups. Another way in which they were able to sell the album on the Internet was through something called an eye blip, which represented a Java Applet that allowed the band to embed the ability to stream the album and offer a purchase point as well on fan sites. They would use this blip on over 1000 sites allowing 400,000 streams.
Upon its release, Kid A debuted at number one on both the UK and US charts. In the latter, the band sold 207,000 copies in its first week. By June 2001, the release had sold 310,000 copies in the UK alone. The record easily reached platinum status in several countries. Kid A would not fare as well with the critics as there was widespread negative reactions to the record. The band had thrown off many rock writers because they were expecting something along the lines of OK Computer. Melody Maker would say just before its release, “If there's one band that promises to return rock to us, it's Radiohead." The Guardian’s first reaction upon hearing the release was that everything about it would confuse the listener. Mojo said, “Upon first listen, Kid A is just awful ... Too often it sounds like the fragments that they began the writing process with – a loop, a riff, a mumbled line of text, have been set in concrete and had other, lesser ideas piled on top." A majority of critics despised the album because they believe that the the songs on it were all an unfinished mess. The Irish Times wrote, "Deliberately abstruse, wilfully esoteric and wantonly unfathomable ... The only thing challenging about Kid A is the very real challenge to your attention span." Mark Beaumont would write that the album contained “about 60 songs that were started that no one had a bloody clue how to finish.” Another quality that many reviews emphasized was the fact that Radiohead seemed to be pretentious on the record. This meant that they seemed very focused on making a difficult, artistic album without making it accessible in any way for the listener. Other critics moaned about the electronic elements of the record being unoriginal and copying previous artists. Select in their review would write, “What do they want for sounding like the Aphex Twin circa 1993, a medal?" Many critics predicted that this album's legacy would not be a very kind. New Musical Express said this in an editorial. “Time will judge it. But right now, Kid A has the ring of a lengthy, over-analysed mistake." Warp Records co founder Rob Mitchell thought that the record would turn into something like David Bowie‘s Heroes or Low, where fans hated it initially, but later acknowledged it as a classic. Major publications did give the record overall a thumbs up including Allmusic, Spin, Rolling Stone, New Musical Express. They merely expressed a bit of disappointment because it was not an OK Computer. Spin magazine predicted that it would most likely be remembered later as the band's best album. Robert Christgau of Village Voice wrote, “An imaginative, imitative variation on a pop staple: sadness made pretty.” Pitchfork would give the album a perfect score on its site. Their review of the album actually helped to give the site credibility with a certain type of music fan. Kid A would go on to win the Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 2001.
In the years that followed, some opinions changed about the album with many regarding it as one of the best releases of the decade. Rob Sheffield would say that it was “the defining moment of the Radiohead legend.” He would go on to compare Radiohead going electronic to Bob Dylan‘s switch to electric in the 1960’s. Quietus would even go on to argue that much of the negativity towards the album initially was the result of rockism, which is defined as a bias by reviewers to place rock music on a higher pedestal than anything else. Yet, time could not change some critic’s minds. Mark Beaumont still disliked the album, but he did acknowledge its legacy. “Kid A's status as a cultural cornerstone has proved me, if not wrong, then very much in the minority ... People whose opinions I trust claim it to be their favourite album ever." Popmatters would observe Kid A is "more fun to think and write about than it is to actually listen to" and a "far less compelling representation of the band's talents than The Bends and OK Computer.” Both Johnny Greenwood and Thom Yorke would say that they had not intended to make a really difficult album. Yorke would later say, “We're actually trying to communicate but, somewhere along the line, we just seemed to piss off a lot of people ... What we're doing isn't that radical.” The blog Grantland would say the true legacy of Kid A was represented by its use of the Internet. “For many music fans of a certain age and persuasion, Kid A was the first album experienced primarily via the internet – it's where you went to hear it, read the reviews, and argue about whether it was a masterpiece ... Listen early, form an opinion quickly, state it publicly, and move on to the next big record by the official release date. In that way, Kid A invented modern music culture as we know it.”
Amnesiac
This became the fifth studio album from Radiohead released in May 2001 from EMI originating from the same recording sessions as Kid A. Drummer Phil Selway described their process during recording, “Two frames of mind ... a tension between our old approach of all being in a room playing together and the other extreme of manufacturing music in the studio. I think Amnesiac comes out stronger in the band-arrangement way." The band had considered releasing the two works as a double album, but decided against it due to the fact that the music was so “dense.” They did not see Amnesiac as a series of outtakes or b-sides not good enough for Kid A. Thom Yorke would later comment, “They cancel each other out as overall finished things. They come from two different places, I think ... In some weird way I think Amnesiac gives another take on Kid A, a form of explanation." The track “Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors” came as a result of Yorke using The ProTools software for the very first time, while trying to record the song “True Love Waits.” The latter would not end up on a proper Radiohead album until A Moon Shaped Pool. For the track “Packt Like Sardines in a Tin Box,” the singer would utilize autotune on his voice. For You and Whose Army, the group tried to imitate the 1940’s group, the Ink Spots. The song's lyrics represented Tony Blair‘s rise to power about a political leader elected to office, who immediately betrays the people. According to Ed O’Brien, “Knives Out” took almost a year to complete, first inspired by Johnny Marr of the Smiths. “Dollars and Cents” came after listening to the Kraut rock band from Germany, Can. “Like Spinning Plates” came about after trying to record a song called “I Will,” which made it on Hail to the Thief. They reversed the song in order to create something completely new. The Radiohead frontman would observe, “I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, 'That's miles better than the right way round', then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody." The final song, “Life in a Glass House” featured jazz musician, Humphrey Lyttelton. He agreed to participate on the track after his daughter shared with him a copy of their 1997 album, OK Computer. The lyrics to the song were inspired by a story that Yorke had read about, where a celebrity had been so harassed by paparazzi that she covered her entire house with her own pictures.
Radiohead did release two singles with this album, “Pyramid Song” and “Knives out.” The singles were also accompanied by music videos, which stood in stark contrast with Kid A. In June 2001, the band began to tour for the first time in three years. The highlight of it came in the fact that they were now able to combine electronic elements of their music live with traditional rock instruments. Amnesiac would debut at number two on the US billboard charts. By 2008, the album had sold over 900,000 copies being certified platinum in both the United States and the UK. Once again, critics remained mixed about the album. Fans and critics alike had hoped Amnesiac would signal Radiohead’s return to a sound much like OK Computer. Rolling Stone looked upon the album as the band moving further away from that earlier guitar rock sound. Stylus would say that the record “solidified the postmillennial model of Radiohead: less songs and more atmosphere, more eclectic and electronic, more paranoid, more threatening, more sublime.” Many reviews enjoyed the album more than Kid A because the record represented something just a bit more conventional and accessible, but some critics found that the reason why they enjoyed Kid A more. Stephen Earlewine of Allmusic would call the album a “hodgepodge,” pure and simple. Other critics would dismiss the release accusing it of being Kid A outtakes. Amnesiac did not have the organic whole that Kid A seemed to represent overall. As if to further complicate matters, the Atlantic in 2021 declared that the release might possibly be Radiohead’s best album. “Listening to it 20 years after its release, the album’s grumpy wisdom—its dignity in the face of dread—feels more moving than ever." The LP would be nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2001 and a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. The record would also be included on many best of lists at the end of 2001 including Q, The Wire, Rolling Stone, Kludge, The Village Voice, Pazz and Jop, the Los Angeles Times, and Alternative Press.

Gathering the Hunt Part 5
This gets heavy
Bard's Note: This also gets GREAT. This is my fave chapter so far. Thanks to @theshapeshifter100!
---
Ivy and Cyril spent the next day at Charles and Mags’s house. Ed didn’t have school, and Cyril was helping him with his take home work while Ivy sat with Yarra to go over various guilds and professions. It was a colossal list.
The boy had no idea what he wanted to do with his life, and while Ivy could give him an idea of what would be expected with some of the roles on his list, it didn’t seem to narrow them down.
“I’m sorry Aunt Ivy,” Yarra wrung his hands. “I know it sounds like I’m being picky
”
“I think the problem is that you think you have to be stuck in the same job your entire life,” Ivy leaned back in her chair, taking a break. “If a position isn’t working out you can, just, leave.”
“I couldn’t do that!”
“Why not?”
“I just-! It feels wrong!”
“I promise it’s not,” Ivy straightened up and gave him a nudge. “Come travelling with me sometime, see Duillintinn, see if you see anything that catches your eye.”
“I, I don’t know,” Yarra cast his eye out the door and towards where Cyril and Ed were working. “I don’t think I could do that.”
“Doesn’t have to be now,” Ivy shrugged. “Actually, definitely not now, but, think about it. Even if it’s not with me, being a career runner is not a bad choice.”
“Don’t people look down on career runners?”
“Yes. It’s stupid, but some people do. There’s no real reason for it.”
There was a sudden rapping on the door, and Ivy looked between Yarra and Ed. Ed looked like he wanted to hare towards the door, but Cyril was having none of it. Mags obviously hadn’t heard and there was no sound from upstairs.
“I’ll get it,” Yarra offered, and was out of his seat before Ivy could say anything.
He opened the door and Ivy could hear a familiar voice trickle in.
“Hello, is there an Ivy Paris here?”
“Irnas?” Ivy muttered to herself. “How did they get here so fast?” She got up just as Yarra called for her and she came to the door.
They looked almost the same as when she had last seen them, dusty and sooty mismatched robes, red hair standing up in all directions. However, that hair was now streaked with grey, perhaps put in prematurely, given their tendency to start fires.
“Mage Irnas,” Ivy greeted. “When I sent that letter I didn’t expect to see you in person. Or so quickly.”
“Wind is faster than horses, and I had to,” Irnas sighed, before breathing in deep, puffing themselves up. “In order to tell you that you’re A FUCKING IDIOT!”
Ivy reeled back from the sudden yelling, but quickly recovered.
“Irnas! There are children!”
“I don’t give a shit! Because you, Ivy Paris, are out of your damn mind!”
“How so?”
“You want to free your friend from the Fae?! Insane! You clearly have no idea how dangerous such a venture is!”
“
So, it’s not impossible.”
“It might as well be!” they blustered. “Do you have any idea how powerful the Fae are?! Do you have any idea how likely you are to die trying to fight them?!”
“
But it’s not impossible.”
Irnas threw up their hands “Ye gods woman! I knew you were stubborn but I didn’t think you were arrogant!”
“You still haven’t told me it’s impossible.”
“IT’S THE FAE! YOUR FRIEND IS DOOMED!”
“So it’s still possible to save her.”
Irnas for a moment looked like they wanted to throttle Ivy before taking a deep breath.
“It’s possible,” they admitted. “If you can enchant a weapon to dispel or disrupt magic, you might be able to fight them. Might. If you get close enough to use it. If they don’t kill you on the spot.”
Ivy’s mind was whirring, and Irnas shook their head.
“I know that look.”
“Teach me to do enchantments.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“You’re not disciplined enough,” Irnas scowled and poked Ivy in the chest. “You’ve neglected your magic, not that you ever had enough control to form an enchantment in the first place!”
“I can learn.”
“Oh, I don’t doubt that, if you have the time. Which, by the way, passes differently in the Fae Realm. No matter what you do you could still be too late.”
“I have to try.”
“Fine! Be stubborn. Don’t come crying to me when it all goes to pot!” with that Irnas spun dramatically, a gust of wind perfectly timed to make their cloak billow as they stormed off.
“Theatrics, thy name is Irnas.”
Ivy turned to go back inside, the wheels in her head turning, but she paused when she realised that Yarra was no longer behind her.
She entered the main room to see that Cyril was packing up, and Ed was nowhere to be seen either.
“Where are the boys?”
“Upstairs. Ed seemed to be distressed by all the shouting,” Cyril raised an eyebrow at Ivy.
“I didn’t know they were going to come. I just thought they’d send a letter. Like a normal person.”
Cyril stood up, and irritatingly enough, he was still taller that Ivy. Not by a lot, but enough.
“Do you plan to rescue your friend, and perhaps your mother?”
“I’d been thinking about it-”
“Yes or no Ivy.”
“
Yes,” Ivy admitted. “It’ll take time. I need to get my magic sorted and learn how to do enchantments but after that...”
“Hmmm mmm. How do you plan on getting to the Fae Realm?”
Ivy’s mouth opened to answer, and then closed when she realised that she didn’t have one. She held up her finger and went to go find Mags.
The older woman was sitting by the stove, waiting for the kettle to boil and not seeming to have any idea of what had occurred. Ivy got her attention and signed.
“Do you know how to get into the Fae Realm?”
Mags looked surprised by this question, but quickly answered.
“You need to be invited. Why?”
When Ivy groaned and put a hand to her forehead, Mags got it.
“This is about rescuing your friend, isn’t it?”
“
Maybe.”
Mags stood up, face turning into the face of a stern mother before adding;
“The only way to be certain of an invite is to make a deal, and frankly, that is the most stupid thing you could possibly do!”
“Forgive my daughter,” Cyril came in, looking sternly at Ivy. “She did always think with her fists first and her head second.”
“Father!”
“It’s true.”
Ivyïżœïżœïżœs face flushed when she realised he was right, but she would be damned if he was going to hear it from her!
“I’m at least a step closer!” she protested. “I need to put a magic dispersing enchantment on a weapon, and I might stand a chance. I can work out the other details later!”
“Might have a chance?!” Cyril was not impressed, and Mags shook her head.
“I know you don’t practice your magic much. It’s going to take ages to get it to the point where you can cast an enchantment. Do you even know how?” he asked.
“I can learn, and time works differently in the Fae Realm, and most likely this Imagination Dimension of yours. There’s a good chance that I have time.”
“And if you’re wrong?”
“
Then I’m wrong, but I need to try.”
“No,” Cyril towered to his full height, which was a total of three inches taller than Ivy. “You will not embark on this hare-brained mission. It’s pointless at best and suicide at worst!”
“You didn’t know Jen! She was good! She was sweet! She was my friend and you know how hard it is for me to make and keep friends,” she usually travelled too much or forgot to keep in touch.
“You knew her for a week!”
“That’s long enough!”
“You are not going to do this!”
“Who’s going to stop me? You?”
“I am your father, so yes!”
“I’m not a child anymore!”
“Then stop acting like one!”
“I’m not!”
“Ivy Paris I forbid you from this mission! Do you understand me?!”
“Perfectly. And I have the legal right to say, fuck off.”
“Ivy!” her father barked. “I’ve lost my wife to the Fae, I’m not losing my daughter too!”
“Oh ye of little faith!”
“It’s hardly lack of faith, more the facts are against you!”
“WILL YOU TWO STOP SHOUTING?!”
Ivy and Cyril froze and turned to the kitchen entranceway, where Charles was red faced and glaring at them.
“Yarra is having to calm down Ed from a panic attack and you two are shouting about the Fae?” he asked, not loudly, but sternly.
“Your sister,” Cyril started, ignoring the glare Ivy was giving him. “Is planning to go into the Western Forest to rescue her friend.”
“After extensive preparation,” Ivy added, glaring harder.
Mags then cleared her throat and once she had all three of them paying attention, signed a simple question.
“What was this about your mother and the Fae?”
Cyril and Ivy froze, and Charles frowned at the two of them.
“What? Why would Mam be involved with the Fae?”
“Yes Ivy,” Cyril’s tone was icy. “Why don’t you explain this one?”
Ivy flared her nostrils, but realising she was backed into a corner, she explained.
“When the portal opened in the Western Forest, I think, think, I saw Mam.”
“You what?” Charlesïżœïżœïżœs face dropped in disbelief. “When were you going to tell me this?”
“I
er
”
“You weren’t, were you?” he looked to their father. “Did you know?”
“Yes, and I warned her that you were going to be upset if we didn’t tell you.”
“Is this, revenge, or something?” Charles asked Ivy. “From when Mam was ill?”
“What? No! That was ten years ago!”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?!”
“What use would it have been?” Ivy tried to rationalise. “It would have just, messed with our memories of her. Messed with our heads. I know it’s been messing with mine.”
“
You still should have told me.”
To that, Ivy had no real answer.
Charles threw up his hands when no one responded.
“Fine! Whatever. You do whatever you want Ivy. You always have,” Charles stormed out of the room, and Ivy followed.
“Charles, Charles wait!”
Her brother ignored her, storming upstairs and slamming the door to his study shut. Ivy flinched at the sound and looked back into the kitchen. She found no sympathy there.
---
To be fair, telling someone you're going to the Fae Realm to rescue someone is only slightly less implausible in Duilintinn than it is in our world.
Bard's Note: This chapter has everything; angsty conflict, consequences of your actions, and weather wizards WHO CAN CROSS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY IN LESS THAN THREE DAYS TO GET YOUR ASS! Yes I love Irnas why do you ask.

Day 25 of the First Annual Watch AU Prompt List!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!
I'm bumping this up in the queue to celebrate the holiday, but don't have time to do my normal commentary and link posting until probably a bit later in the day. Happy holidays everyone!
Holiday Celebrations
(Day 25 of @thewatchau‘s Annual prompts, and for those celebrate it, Happy Christmas! If you don’t, have a wonderful Wednesday!
This is the longest prompt yet, nearly 4,000 words, so there will be a cut. Under the cut will also be messy eating and alcohol)
—
Ivy had timed it almost perfectly, and couldn’t quite believe her luck. Iolla Beacon to Loburn, about a day’s ride since she had to cross the Aircaenn bridge and almost double back on herself. As the raven flies it would take a few hours, which would make delivering messages so much easier!
The frosty ground cracked under Firefly’s hooves, and both horse and rider could see their breath puffing out in front of them. Otto was huddled on the saddle, hiding under Ivy’s cloak. She didn’t blame him, she was wondering if she would be able to dismount when they stopped, her fingers had to be frozen to the reins by now.
She could see Loburn appearing over the horizon. The main road cut right through it, on either end was an inn. Both of them knew Ivy, as she would leave Firefly with the one she got to first that had an empty stall.
She passed the farm on the way up, and could see that the old yew just outside the village was decorated with brightly coloured ornaments hanging from its branches. Ivy’s mother had loved doing that, she’d take spare materials from her work and help shape them into suns, moons and stars.
Those were still there, Ivy’s father had a box full of them at home and brought them out to decorate the yews and box trees around the village. Among those ones were those made of wood and brightly painted, and some shaped like fruit and small dolls.
Ivy rode past it, eyes lingering on the gold and silver decorations before flicking ahead. The inn was coming up, time to see if they had a free stall.

Man Utd news LIVE: Solskjaer sack latest, ÂŁ300m transfer plan instruction, injury blow | Football | Sport
Manchester United news LIVE updates
Monday, October 7
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under severe pressure after losing 1-0 to Newcastle
Mason Greenwood has suffered a back injury
Lee Sharpe has told Ed Woodward he needs to spend ÂŁ300m on transfers
Marcus Rashford has apologised to Man Utd supporters
Man Utd will not sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Manchester United will stick by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite the 1-0 loss to Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils are down in 12th in the table and have won just twice in the top flight all season.
Manchester United are unbelievably just two points above the relegation zone after the abject defeat to Newcastle who had been struggling themselves.
Solskjaer’s tally of nine points from the opening eight games sets a new record for the worst at this stage of a Premier League campaign.
It beats David Moyes who amassed 11 points in 2013 and ended up getting sacked after 10 months in charge.
But despite the poor form and results the Glazers have no plans to sack Solskjaer, according to the Daily Star.
The billionaire owners have taken into account the number of players missing from the United squad and willing to stick with him for now.

No Ed Woodward meeting held
Manchester United have denied claims there has been a meeting between Ed Woodward and the club’s hierarchy to discuss the future of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Reports on Monday afternoon claimed there was an “unscheduled meeting” between Woodward and members of the Glazer family.
However, Express Sport has been told that is “completely incorrect” and there has been no meeting.
This comes after United suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday.
Solskjaer’s side went down 1-0 at Newcastle thanks to a fine strike from debutant Matty Longstaff.
Man Utd move for Moussa Dembele accelerating
Manchester United have advanced their interest in Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, according to transfer expert Duncan Castles.
Castles told the Transfer Window podcast: “There is a genuine, long-standing interest in Moussa Dembele and there is an opportunity for the club to do something there if they want to because Dembele is unhappy with his status at Lyon in that this was the season he expected to be the No 9, Memphis Depay has been demanding that he played the No 9 role, which is fascinating given that he’s clearly not a traditional No 9.
“Both players have been scoring, Dembele has actually got an incredibly good scoring rate given he’s had limited playing time in that position and isn’t a guaranteed starter.
“His valuation has dropped a certain degree, again because Depay’s been chosen ahead of him by the current coach.
“United have scouted the player since his time at Fulham and seen him as a long-term potential centre-forward for them.
“My understanding is that has advanced, it’s not got to the stage where offers have been made, but the kind of groundwork that you’d expect to be done ahead of a deal like that is beginning to happen.
“The key element to all of this is that they’re looking to do something in January already which suggests ‘we are not happy with performances, we need to upgrade further’.”

Emergency meeting over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has held an “unscheduled meeting” with members of the Glazer family to discuss the club’s poor start to the season, claims transfer expert Ian McGarry.
McGarry told the Transfer Window podcast: “Despite the claims of some at Old Trafford that everything remains the same regarding the Glazers and the position on head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in fact there is a unscheduled meeting between Ed Woodward and the Glazer family, the key directors, to reflect upon the start of the season which Manchester United have had and decide upon if indeed there needs to be a change in direction, whether that be changing the manager or indeed maybe changing the direction of the club with regards to strategy.
“There has been a lot of recalcitrance regarding the defence of Solskjaer, both from the club and outside the club.”
McGarry believes the fact United’s next fixture is against rivals and league leaders Liverpool has played a part in the scheduling of a meeting.
“I do think that maybe this conversation is being had because Manchester United’s next game is against Liverpool,” he added.
“I think the board are, even this board, not so blind as to see that if they were to suffer a heavy defeat against their oldest and most-hated rivals in a situation where Liverpool are already eight points ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League title race.”
What Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Fred at Newcastle
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to give Fred basic advice during the defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Brazilian has struggled at Old Trafford since his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer.
And apart from one good performance against Paris Saint-Germain fans have not seen anything in Fred to suggest he is the top player United need to run their midfield.
What Solskjaer had to instruct the 26-year-old to do in the abject defeat to Newcastle proves it.
The Athletic claim the United boss had to tell Fred to try and spin his marker and drive forward.
Surely a player signed for £53million should be able to realise that’s what he should be doing against the likes of Newcastle.

Man Utd news LIVE: Robin van Persie has called his former club boring (Image: GETTY)
Robin van Persie on ‘boring’ Man Utd
Robin van Persie has labelled his former side Manchester United “boring” and has criticised them for a lack of effort.
Van Persie was speaking following United’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Newcastle on Sunday.
“To be fair it was a bit boring to watch,” the Dutchman told Premier League Productions.
“Predictable, not much going on and that is something that I don’t like to see really because even though you are low in confidence, even though you are not playing your best football, it can happen, but you have to put the effort in, you have to make the runs, you have to have a go.
“Try your luck, maybe the ball bounces well for you. They didn’t really do that enough.”
Man Utd set Alexis Sanchez asking price
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly wants Alexis Sanchez gone permanently.
Sanchez is spending the season on loan at Serie A giants Inter Milan having struggled at Old Trafford.
The Chilean joined the Red Devils last January from Arsenal though scored just five goals in all competitions.
And The Sun claim that United are demanding at least ÂŁ25million for any club to take the former Barcelona star permanently.
It’s reported that United see no way how Sanchez can return to Old Trafford, regardless of how well he performs in Italy.

Moussa Dembele wanted by Manchester United
Manchester United are monitoring Lyon hot shot Moussa Dembele as a potential solution to their striking problem.
United are lacking firepower this season and have scored just eight goals in eight games – four of which came against Chelsea on the opening day of the season.
This sit in 12th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.
United allowed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to depart this summer without replacing them and have gambled on the fitness of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Both have picked up knocks and neither have have hit the heights they’d hoped for so far in terms of goals with Mason Greenwood being thrust into the limelight as back up.
But, according to the Daily Mail, United had scouts in France last night to watch Dembele in action.

Marcus Rashford sends fan message
Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford has sent a message to fans after another defeat.
Rashford struggled as United were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle on Sunday to continue the Red Devils’ poor run of form.
Rashford tweeted: “You can’t hide in football and the last few weeks simply haven’t been good enough.
“As a United fan myself, that hurts. And you deserve better.
“We know we need to improve and that is our sole focus as a team and as a club.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sack latest
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is running out of time to turn the club’s fortunes around, according to Martin Keown.
“You start to look at where the system is, where the intensity is, and I think the belief now is ebbing away,” Keown said.
“I think this could be the beginning of the end for this manager.
“I don’t want to see a former player come in and leave the job.
“But there has to be a spark, there has to be a reaction.
“It seems to be just spiralling out of control at Manchester United at the moment, that was a really poor result today.”

Man Utd need to spend ÂŁ300m
Lee Sharpe has told Manchester United they need to spend ÂŁ300million and sign someone like Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
“I think you are looking at least £300million,” Sharpe told talkSPORT.
“You need someone like a Harry Kane for £200m/£220m that is going to score you 25 goals a season and you’ve got a different outlook in the team.
“So it is not going to be a cheap one.
“It’s difficult to keep up with the likes of Man City and Liverpool when they’ve set such high standards.
“You’ve got to stop comparing this team to Liverpool and City and great United teams of the past.
“They need to be given the chance to grow and educate themselves and become potentially what they could be in a year or 18 months’ time.”

“The 18-year-old, who made his debut at that level against Turkey last month, had been selected for the upcoming games against Slovenia and Austria.
“He came on as a second-half substitute in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday but has pulled out of coach Aidy Boothroyd’s group due to a back problem.”

Interview with Ed Lehner
1) Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind your entry for this contest?
I have never rock climbed in my life, but have watched them with awe as they scale, what would appear to be, shear slick granite and/or ice. While on an winter Outward Bound cross country skiing camping expedition, more years ago than I care to say, I met a woman who was a true outdoors person, living with her boyfriend in a teepee near Aspen, CO so they could spend their winter working at the ski area, skiing, and living cheap. She was the toughest woman I had ever met.
Also, here in Durango, Colorado, we have any number of amazing women athletes: cyclists, climbers, skiers, kayakers, and runners. Several years ago we were at the ice climbing festival in Ouray, CO. There was one female climber who had gone way above her last anchor point to the concern of several members of the crowd next to me. It was a timed event and she had apparently elected to forego safety to try to win, which she did, safely. It was scary to watch and we all breathed a collective sigh of relief when she reached the top.
Last year, I read Forget Me Not: A Memoir by Jennifer Lowe-Anker and Jon Krakauer which is Lowe-Anker’s account of her life with world class mountaineer, Alex Lowe. Reading her account of her own rock climbing in her book gave me the inspiration for ‘Billie’. Recently I had seen a short film at our film festival of a couple helicoptering in to a site in Alaska to climb a sheer granite wall which inspired the climb, albeit, set in Montana and transportation to the site by canoe rather than helicopter.
2) What made you decide to enter this contest?
The first contest I ever entered was the previous that used the image of the swing and the moon. I had fun with it, enjoyed the brevity and challenge of telling a story in less that 2500 words. The incongruity of the two images in this recent one were a challenge to put together. But after contemplating them for several weeks, I had the idea. I had fun writing this, thought it was a good story, so I thought I would try again. I’m happy I did.
3) Who are some of your favourite authors and why?
Henry Miller for his writing style.
Ernest Hemingway for his writing style, his stories, and his characters.
Jack Kerouac because of his rapid fire free form use of language.
Marc Levy for his gentle, sometimes surrealistic stories.
Nina George for her delightful stories set mostly in Paris, my most favorite city.
Ann Hillerman for continuing her father’s legacy of stories about the Navajo peoples and the area where I live.
Kerry Greenwood for her “Miss Fisher” series, on which I am totally hooked.
4) What is your favourite book you read this year and why?
Somewhere in France by Jennifer Robson. It was an entrancing book well written book set in WW I. The main character is a woman who becomes an ambulance driver in France and tells of the hardship, the carnage, and love during this dreadful time.
5) What is your best piece of advice for all the new independent authors out there?
Keep on writing and don’t pay attention to the critics, either inner or outer. Find your own voice whether poetry or prose. Start a blog or whatever, but get your work out there. Tell your stories. Write.
