Beim Spülmittel läuft das Nachfüllen problemlos, beim Allzweck-Reiniger ist das Problem, dass das Zeug wahnsinnig schäumt - man muss sehr langsam vorgehen, um die Flasche voll zu bekommen. Die Finger werden zwangsläufig klebrig, wobei in meiner Filiale Küchenrolle bereitsteht, um sie sich abzuwischen. Wieder etwas weniger Plastikmüll, den ich verursache.

What do you use to wash your laundry? I'm curious because my wife is very sensitive to lots of things, though not to the degree you are. We use ECOS soap and it works wonderfully for us, but my little ADHD brain keeps wondering what you use. Curiosity and such.

ECOS is fine, definitely one of the ones I react to less.

I rotate between the Ecover Zero powder (also the brand I use for the dishwasher) and the Biokleen Free and Clear Powder, depending on which one I can get on sale. I was using Aspen Clean Unscented liquid detergent for a while, but they hiked their price and I didn't like how many plastic bottles I was going through with them, so I switched back to powdered detergents.

I'm currently using up my 10lb box of Biokleen at the moment which is showing no signs of depleting almost a year after buying it 😅

Mycelium Materials

Mycelium are the root-like structure that make up the bulk of most fungi (whereas mushrooms are the fruiting bodies), consisting of branching, thread-like structures. While mycelium has been used in other materials applications, including furniture and construction, the focus of today’s post is on its potential in packaging, as a replacement for polystyrene (Styrofoam) and other plastics.

As biomaterials, mycelium contain lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, and chitin. When combined with agricultural waste, as is typical for the production of mycelium packaging, cellulose and lignin are included, increasing the rigidity of the resulting material.

To form the shapes needed for packaging, such as in the images above, mycelium is simply grown in molds until they reach the desired shape/size, then heated to halt any further growth. The only other material necessary is a substrate for the mycelium to grow into, which can be most types of agricultural waste as mentioned above. It only takes a matter of days to grow the mycelium. The resulting product is compostable and biodegradable, however, it should be noted that that also limits the lifespan; mycelium packaging cannot be used for long term storage, as it will begin to degrade.

Mycelium packaging is already out in the world: Dell uses mycelium packaging when shipping their computer parts, and has since 2011; while IKEA has made the commitment to switch over. Ecovative uses hemp hurd as their substrate, creating packaging that is both fire- and water-resistant.
