Tove Lo Caps Off Two-Night Sold-Out Run at Brooklyn Steel on Thursday

Given that she’d fractured her ankle during the previous night’s show, I really assumed Tove Lo would forego the whole walking-offstage-before-the-encore thing, since she was on crutches and wearing a boot. But the Swedish singer-songwriter didn’t make her Brooklyn Steel audience sacrifice anything on Thursday night. In fact, when her second consecutive sold-out show at the venue began, she ambled to the front of the stage, hooked her booted leg over the arm of a plush pink chair and took a great swig from a wine bottle. Theatrical? Sure, but after performing the opening tune, “Glad He’s Gone,” she announced, “Brooklyn, New York, this is what you call the show must go on.”

Tove Lo’s reputation is as pop’s queen of raunch, but as she mentioned before singing “Hey You Got Drugs,” the closing track on 2017’s ​Blue Lips: “I do write a lot about sex and escape, but I also write about sadness and heartbreak.” Her writing is distinctly Swedish, lucid and hedonistic, but when Green Day advertised this week that their new album has “no Swedish songwriters,” they probably weren’t thinking of Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson. Mention of Sweden in the pop world has become a shorthand for longhaired, middle-aged blonde men ventriloquizing young American women. Beyond its weird American jingoism, the slogan slyly attributes to those anonymous Swedish men what cerebral, intellectual work is involved in pop songwriting.

Such sneering likely wouldn’t account for a Swedish woman who writes her own incredibly intuitive hits and sings them well. In fact, when Tove Lo first arrived, there was some angst over whether her ribaldry would cap her crossover potential. Still, she remains, far now from her debut shows at Baby’s All Right half a decade ago. “I write most of my songs on piano. I’m not a great piano player but I’m a great writer,” she said matter-of-factly, before crooning “Moments” over just the piano. “I’m not the prettiest you’ve ever seen/ But I have my moments,” it went.
