Hetalia Food Headcanons
Am I channelling myself in those posts?
Yes, I am.
Am I ashamed of it?
Not in the slightest.
Germany: Ludwig, in my mind, is trying to do right by the environment, so he is as less waste as possible, all seasonal food, tap water kind of guy. He is also trying to eat less meat—not fully vegetarian, but maybe one day. His kitchen is pristinely clean and always well stocked; he does groceries with a list. Lutz cooks, sometimes nothing elaborate, just simple dishes, lots of Italian food. (I am repeating myself, but I think Feliciano does impact Ludwig's life immensely in those tiny, little things, like fresh basil on the parapet.). He has a sweet tooth and bakes all those things from the internet, like sweet potato brownies. A long time ago, Roderich taught him the joy of baking, and it stayed with him. The beverages of choice are coffee, milk, and suger (Prussia and Austria are judging) and Kölsch, a type of beer from Cologne, Germany; he grew to like it when his capital was in Bonn, which is not so far away from Cologne.
Prussia: Gilbert is rather helpless in the kitchen; he used to always have someone to cook for him; only when he became Eastern Germany he was forced to prepare food for himself. He basically could live on sandwitches, but nowadays he actually tries with those meal prep kits. He is not yet a master, but he is getting there. Gilbert is also very tidy; dishes are always washed, but he does groceries when he does groceries (which means when the fridge is practically empty, there are just a few bottles of beer still in it), and mostly he orders on the internet. He likes the German kitchen but is also quite adventurous and will try almost everything. His weaknesses are all kinds of Haribo, even liquorice. Prussia also enjoys Ludwig's cooking and Roderich's baking. He won't contribute if he doesn't have to. He eats out a lot.
Austria: He is the messy one. Roderich, similar to Gilbert, used to have cooks and maids. A long time ago, when he started baking, it was on a whim, just a little hobby with tasty results. He was forced to take care of himself after the Great War. It wasn't easy, but he managed. He likes complicated recipes involving many ingredients. He is easily distracted, which is not helping with 10 dirty pots. And he does not follow whatever is written; he sort of plays around with the recipe with sometimes strange results. He is also the one with an irregular meal-eating schedule. Germany and Prussia are rather predictable; you know, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a few snacks. Rod? Sometimes it is five meals per day, sometimes it is coffee, and when Gilbert arrives, he forces Roderich to eat because he simply forgot. Also, Gilbert would do the dishes, as the kitchen usually looks worse than a battlefield, especially if Roderich stress-bakes. And he does a lot, which results in copious amounts of delicious cakes and muffins. Austria likes grocery shopping; nope, he is not following the list. He makes it and then does whatever he wants.

At Bake Everything, we offer all the baking tools and ingredients you need to create stunning baked goods. Let’s dive into the foundational tips and easy recipes that will set you up for baking success.
1. Invest in Quality Tools for Consistent Results When starting out, having reliable baking tools is essential for success. High-quality measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, and a sturdy whisk are a must. Accurate measurements are key to baking, so investing in a digital kitchen scale can help eliminate guesswork and ensure your recipes turn out as expected.
Bake Everything offers a range of premium baking tools that will make your life easier and your results more consistent. Whether you need a versatile baking pan or silicone mats for non-stick baking, our store has you covered. Explore our collection here.
Tumblr media
2. Understand the Importance of Temperature Temperature plays a vital role in baking—both for your ingredients and your oven. Always use room temperature ingredients unless specified otherwise, as they mix more evenly and create better texture. Additionally, preheating your oven is crucial for proper baking; starting with a cold oven can result in unevenly baked goods.
An oven thermometer is a beginner baker’s best friend. Even if your oven displays a set temperature, it may not be accurate. Using a thermometer ensures you’re baking at the perfect heat for your recipes. Find high-quality oven thermometers and baking accessories in our store to make sure every bake turns out perfect. Check our thermometers and tools here.
3. Master Basic Recipes Before Advancing For beginners, sticking to simple recipes helps build confidence and skills. Start with basic cookies, muffins, or a simple sponge cake. These recipes teach you fundamental techniques such as creaming butter and sugar, sifting flour, and folding ingredients without overmixing.
Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can gradually try more complex recipes like layered cakes or pastries. Our collection at Bake Everything has easy-to-follow recipe books and essential ingredients to help you make your baking journey enjoyable. Browse our recipes and baking kits.
Tumblr media
4. Learn the Art of Proper Measuring Proper measuring can make or break your baked goods. For dry ingredients, use the spoon-and-level method—scoop your ingredient into the measuring cup and level it off with a flat edge. Avoid packing flour or sugar, as this can lead to dense and dry baked goods. For liquid ingredients, always use a clear measuring cup and check at eye level for accuracy.
Bake Everything offers precise measuring tools to help you master the art of measuring. With our range of measuring cups and spoons, you can ensure your baking is flawless every time. Shop our measuring tools.
5. Don’t Forget to Cool Properly Cooling is just as important as the baking itself. Removing baked goods too early from their pans can lead to breakage, while cooling on the wrong surface can result in soggy bottoms. Use a wire cooling rack to allow air to circulate, keeping the texture of your cookies, cakes, and muffins just right.
For beginner bakers, having a reliable cooling rack is essential. Bake Everything stocks a variety of cooling racks designed for durability and optimal airflow. Explore our cooling racks and accessories.

Crafting Culinary Creations: Exploring Innovative Recipes with Your Sandwich Machine
Tumblr media
The struggle is real: mornings are hectic, lunch breaks are short, and dinner needs to be quick and easy. But who says tasty meals have to be complicated? Enter the dynamic duo of the kitchen - the humble sandwich maker and the versatile cookware set.
The Speedy Sandwich Savior
The sandwich maker is a champion of quick and delicious meals. Whether you're a college student cramming for exams, a busy professional on the go, or a parent juggling a million tasks, this countertop appliance is your knight in shining armor.
Effortless Eats: In just minutes, you can transform simple ingredients like bread, cheese, and fillings into perfectly toasted and gooey delights. No need for preheating ovens or hovering over a pan – the sandwich maker takes care of it all.
Variety is the Spice of Life: Don't be fooled by the name - sandwich makers can do much more than flattened classics. Many models offer interchangeable plates for waffles, paninis, or even grill marks, letting you explore different textures and flavors.
Compact Convenience: Small and lightweight, the sandwich machine doesn't hog precious counter space. Plus, its non-stick surfaces make cleaning a breeze, another win for busy lives.
The Cookware Set: Your Culinary Canvas
While the sandwich maker is a master of speed, a good cookware set is your gateway to culinary exploration. A well-rounded set equips you to tackle a wider range of dishes, from breakfast scrambles to one-pot wonders.
The Right Tools for the Job: A typical cookware set includes a frying pan, a saucepan with a lid, and a stockpot. This basic trio allows you to saute, simmer, boil, and even steam, opening doors to countless recipes.
Heat Distribution Matters: Look for cookware made from materials that distribute heat evenly, preventing hot spots and ensuring consistent cooking results. Stainless steel and cast iron are popular choices, each with their benefits.
Versatility is Key: Many cookware sets come with additional pieces like a steamer basket or a casserole dish, further expanding your culinary repertoire.
Together, They Conquer the Kitchen
The beauty of this duo lies in their complementary nature. The sandwich maker tackles quick meals and snacks, while the cookware set empowers you to whip up more elaborate dishes. Here's how they work in perfect harmony:
Leftovers Reimagined: Leftover grilled chicken or roasted vegetables from dinner become the stars of a quick and satisfying sandwich the next day.
Soup and Sandwich Combos: Whip up a creamy tomato soup in your saucepan, pair it with a melty grilled cheese from your sandwich maker, and you have a soul-warming lunch ready in no time.
Breakfast Champions: While you're making fluffy scrambled eggs in your pan, the sandwich maker can be toasting bagels or English muffins for the perfect breakfast duo.
The Final Bite
The sandwich maker and cookware set are more than just kitchen appliances - they're your allies in the fight against culinary boredom and time constraints. With their combined power, you can create delicious meals, no matter how busy your schedule is. So, invest in this dynamic duo and watch your kitchen transform into a haven of quick, easy, and delicious possibilities.

Pairings - Lee Bodecker x Reader
Word Count - over 2.5k (loads of them)
Warnings - stalkerish Lee, arsehole ex, gun violence, eventual smut, breeding kink.
A/N - firstly if you are a minor then shoo, come back when you’re 18 please. Secondly thanks to my wife @buckyownsmylife for proofing this for me and as always hyping me up enough to post. This is for her 2k birthday challenge and if you aren’t already following her then what are you waiting for?
A/N 2 - @dreamslikeaheartbeat surprised me with this awesome mood board earlier and I love it. I encourage you all to go and have a look at her work she’s amazing and you won’t regret it.
Tumblr media
Being one of the only detectives in this small town meant that most people respected Lee Bodecker, he would always get a table at the diner, always go to the front of the queue and locals knew to do what they were told when he asked.
That was until you arrived, moving here from another state you knew absolutely nobody and decided to open a coffee shop across from the station. The day before you opened you took a tray of coffees and freshly baked muffins to the station to say hi and let everyone know you were excited to get to know them. You had everyone under your spell with your first smile but Lee knew something was up, young girls like you don’t just move from big cities to small towns for the hell of it.
It took him a week but he had you, you were running away from your husband, he was a small time criminal but his wrap sheet was one of the longest Lee had seen in a long time. You were only married for six months before you showed up here and he wanted to know why, he was only protecting the town from future problems or at least that’s how he justified it to himself.
You weren’t due to open for another hour when you heard someone at your front door banging to be let in, you were covered in flour from making the cafes daily selection and didn’t really want anyone to see you like this but they were so persistent. Wiping your hands on the nearest cloth you peered out of the kitchen and were confused to see Detective Bodecker smiling through the window at you waving to be let in. You opened the door slightly and got a shock when he barged in locking the door behind him “hey sweetheart I’m glad we finally have time for a little talk” looking up at him slightly confused “I’m not open for another hour Detective can you come back then, I’m a little busy right now” turning your back on him and walking back to the kitchen.
Unsurprisingly he follows you standing a little too close and breathing down your neck “i said i wanted to talk” rolling your eyes you look up at him “and i said I’m busy” turning back to the bowl of blueberry muffin batter and adding more cinnamon, you’re about to mix when you see his thick finger dip into your bowl then into his mouth. He moans as he licks his finger clean and smirks as you visibly cringe at the sight “what the fuck! You can’t do that” you shout at him, furious inside as now you have to dump it all and start again. “Relax sweetheart you can make this my batch I’ll pay you for the loss” before dipping his finger again and pushing it into your mouth as you’re about to protest. You pull your head back and slap him across the face “get the fuck out of my cafe now, what the fuck is wrong with you?” You shout, watching as he wipes his finger across your apron and soothes his cheek “you’re feisty, i like it, we’re going to have some fun darling” and with that he turns and walks out leaving you stood in shock unable to understand what just happened.
A week goes by and he hasn’t been back so you put the little incident down to some sort of hazing and try to forget about it but you can’t, you see him all over town and he always seems to be watching you. You’re not sure what it is he thinks he’s going to catch you doing but he’s always there.
The next day you’re in the florists when you see him walk past and wink at you, enraged by his inability to leave you alone you pay for your bouquet and storm out looking for him. Marching down the street you can’t believe this is the first time in a week you haven’t seen his smug face watching you, you relax for a moment before you feel someone grabbing your arm and pulling you into the alleyway.
Your back hits the wall and you want to scream out but his hand is over your mouth before you can “you looking for me sweetheart?” He whispers in your ear, licking the outer shell and managing to dodge your knee as you attempt to introduce it to his balls. “You are trouble, I don’t like trouble in my town, I like an easy ride. I don’t want your shithead of an ex wandering into town and messing things up” your body stiffens at the mention of your ex and Lee noticing this chuckles “you think I don’t know who you are? Who he is?” You bite his hand to get him off you and suck in a deep breath “he doesn’t know where i am, he’s not going to show up here. Is that why you’ve been following me all across town you fucking creep?” Anger flashes across his face and he wraps his fingers around your throat “this is my town and I’ll follow who I like, do you understand?” You roll your eyes and nod your head knowing you aren’t getting out of this alleyway if you don’t “fine, follow me, see if I give a shit. I don’t do anything interesting anyway. If you’ve got nothing better to do than watch me all day so be it” he loosens his grip and takes a step back, admiring your bravery he doesn’t expect the punch to his gut as you pick up your things and walk away. Too winded to follow he watches you turn the corner and slumps down the wall to get his breath back.
The whole town loves your cafe and you feel settled as your regulars make their way in for their usual orders, enjoying the fancy coffee recipes you come up with everyday and clearing out your cakes by lunchtime. You hadn’t seen much of Lee since that day in the alley but you can always sense him nearby. His smell seems to have invaded your life in so many ways.
Closing down for the day you have your back to the door when you feel some hands wrap around your waist “why did you run away baby?”. Your blood runs cold, his voice makes your heart pound and his grip on you hurts probably leaving purple bruises on your sides, you try to pull at his thumbs to weaken his grip but he knows all of your moves now “baby come on didn’t you miss me?” Swinging your head back into his face he stumbles backwards giving you the chance to run for the back door, running through the kitchen you see Lee sitting on your counter eating some of your chocolate and looking smug “he’s here, he’s out there” pulling out his gun he stalks out to the seating area and sees him sat waiting.
“Well, well Ransom Drysdale what brings you out here to our little corner of the world?” Keeping his gun aimed at the man he keeps you behind him, protected, safe. Ransom sizes him up deciding what his next move will be when he stands moving towards them slowly “i don’t want any trouble. I just want my wife to come home with me, you can understand that surely?” Looking around Lee you scream “I’m not going anywhere with you! Now get the fuck out of my place” Ransom stops and stares at you, shaking his head “always so angry with me, come home and let me make you happy I’ll buy you anything you want you know that. Nothing is too much for my baby”. You grab the second gun off Lee’s belt and step out pointing it at Ransoms head “just leave me alone and go back home you don’t want me, you just don’t want people thinking you’re anything other than perfect” that's all it took he strode towards you unsheathing his blade screaming insults at you when you heard a loud bang and felt a warm splash on your face, looking at Lee he licks his lips “he can’t have what’s already mine and i won’t let anyone hurt you” he says walking towards you and catching you as you pass out in his arms.
You wake up in a hospital bed, your throat dry and your head throbbing. Looking around you’re shocked but not surprised to see Lee sitting in the chair next to your bed eating jelly beans and reading the paper “you’re awake” he says a little too loudly for your liking “Lee, what are you doing here. You took care of him I’m not a threat to your little town I’ll be gone before news travels round” he chuckles at you “oh you aren’t going anywhere sweetheart, we have unfinished business” throwing your head back you look up at the ceiling “what is it with men? Why do you all think you can control me?” He leans forward and licks your ear “you like me more than you realise, sweetheart. I’m patient though, I’ll wait” and with that he leaves, turning and winking at you before he exits.
It’s been a week since the incident, the police have cleared your cafe for opening again and quite a few of your regulars have arrived to help you with the cleanup, smiling at them all you unlock the door to let them in but scream when you see Lee sitting drinking a cappuccino at the counter “what the fucking fuck are you doing in here?” Walking up to him and turning him around on the stool “how did you even get in?” He looks you over checking to see if you’re ok “did you not realise this was my building sweetheart? I’ve got the master key I can come and go as I please” you groan loudly and turn to look at the damage, confused when everything seems normal you look back and see the biggest shit eating grin on his face “you're welcome sweetheart” kissing your head and walking out towards the station you watch him dumbfounded before making drinks for all the volunteers.
That was the start of his weird courtship, it never occurred to him that letting himself into the little apartment above your cafe and leaving flowers on your pillow was creepy, or that one time when he had your car towed because he thought he heard a weird noise one day when you came back from the market. It took him three months to ask you out and another two for you to agree but here you are now, wearing lingerie in his favourite colour excitedly waiting for him to come home. You sat on his sofa waiting to hear the jangle of his keys but they never seemed to arrive, you tried his phone but he didn’t answer either so you sat and waited. Next thing you know you’re being shaken awake by a sorry looking man who you haven’t decided is still your boyfriend, he looks you up and down blushing at the soft green lingerie you’re almost wearing “is this all for me sweetheart?” You scowl at him, angry that he’s almost three hours late and couldn’t send a quick text to tell you he’d be back when he could.
Running his hand down your face you bite the pad of his finger in warning “it was all yours hours ago, now I’m not so sure” sitting up and shifting away from him you try not to smile when he gets on his hands and knees and crawls to you for forgiveness. “I’m sorry there was a case, some kid we’ve been tracking for a while showed his face and I needed to go and see him”. You still won’t look at him so he kisses and nibbles up your leg the way he knows drives you wild his hands moving up your sides and pulling your bra down so he can rub and pinch your nipples relaxing once he hears a gentle moan from you. Kissing higher he licks around your belly button and nips at the flesh “you gonna finally let me fuck a kid into here baby? I can’t wait to see you all swollen with my son” grabbing him by the hair and pulling him up to your face “oh yeah and what if it's a girl?” You challenge him, going soft when he replies “even better, two of you to love for the rest of my life”. You pull him closer to you kissing him deeply, your tongue tickling the roof of his mouth making him jerk his hips forward before you pull back “you still have some making up to do” he smiles and pulls the tiny scrap of material covering your wet folds to one side before licking and nibbling at you like he’s a starving man. Your hands grip at his hair, his shirt, anything that will keep him exactly where he is, he knows exactly what you like making sure to spend as much of his time showing you as he can. He sucks on your clit, his warm mouth covering it before he flicks his tongue over it making you scream out his name, he could cum just from hearing you but tonight he’s going to give you all of him, it’s time.
He quickly strips as you come down from your high kissing your neck and jaw before picking you up and carrying you to the bedroom. You lay down watching him stare at you, you’ve never felt more loved than you do when he looks at you like this he always looks so grateful that you’re with him, he doesn't realise how much you love him. You hold your hand out and pull him down to you giggling when he almost falls, laying next to you he plays with your breasts “i can’t wait until these are full of milk for our baby” moving his hand down lower and rubbing your belly “until this is swollen and I have to care for you” his fingers move down lower, very slowly rubbing soft circles on your clit “fuck Lee, i need you” you whine, he leans down licking and nibbling on your nipple “you gonna let me do it? You gonna let me fuck a baby into you?”. You grind your hips up trying to get more friction “please, fuck please” licking your ear “please what sweetheart?”
Not able to take anymore you grab him and push him down on the bed sinking down on his length, moaning at the stretch before leaning forward and kissing him. He grabs your hips and bounces you up and down, groaning loud at how tight you are. He needs you to come quickly or he’s not going to make it. His finger rubs at your clit pushing you over the edge squeezing his cock tight he cums hard, decorating your walls with his seed. You collapse forward and kiss his face all over, taking your time to appreciate him. He goes to move away but you grip him with your thighs “don't move yet, we have to make sure it all stays inside me don’t we” you smirk at his shocked face before laying on top of him content, already thinking of baby names and picturing the nursery.

Epilogue
“How is this the third store we’ve visited that’s out of cranberry sauce?”
“Because it’s eleven in the morning on Thanksgiving Day?” Maia threw Simon a look that clearly said ‘duh.’ “I’m honestly surprised we managed to snag those last two pie crusts.”
“I should never have let myself get distracted while I was doing my shopping on Monday.” He fixed Jace with a stern glare. “No more distracting me at the grocery store.”
“You were pretty into my distraction, if I recall correctly,” Jace said with a lazy grin.
“You’re laughing now, but you’ve never seen Bubbe Helen when she doesn’t get cranberries on Thanksgiving. You don’t even know.”
Jace wrapped his arms around Simon’s waist, pulling him close. “Hey, we’ll find Bubbe Helen her cranberries. We’ve still got a hundred miles left between here and New York. There’s bound to be a store along the way that still has cranberries.”
Simon relaxed in his arms with a sheepish smile. “You’re right. I’m being dumb.”
“It’s not dumb,” Jace corrected gently. “It’s tradition, and it’s important to people you love.”
“Wow, holidays make you really sappy,” Simon teased.
“You make me really sappy,” Jace corrected, reaching for Simon’s left hand. He brought it to his lips, placing a kiss on the knuckle right above his father’s ring. The same ring he’d used when he actually proposed two weeks ago, at the same table in Java Jones where they’d made their list of fake dating rules all those months ago. He’d hidden the ring under his muffin, knowing Simon would steal the last bite like he always did, and even though it wasn’t the kind of grand, romantic gesture his siblings had suggested when he asked for their help, it was theirs, and the look on Simon’s face when he said yes was really all that mattered.
“You make me pretty sappy, too,” Simon said, drawing him into a kiss.
“If you two start making out in the middle of the canned goods aisle, I’m stealing the van and going to New York without you.”
Jace pulled away from the kiss to give Maia an unimpressed look. “No one’s making you watch.”
“Yeah, but every minute I have to spend waiting for you is one I don’t get to spend with my girlfriend, who I live two-hundred miles away from and only get to see maybe once a month if I’m really lucky.”
“She does have a point,” Simon said. “Plus, Becky can be really vindictive when she wants to be, and she’s got easy access to the room we’re sleeping in tonight.”
“And the longer we stand around here, the longer other people have to buy all the cranberries at other stores,” Maia pointed out.
“Fine,” Jace relented, releasing Simon. “Let’s go find some cranberries.”
Simon took his hand, and Jace could feel the warm metal of his ring pressing into his skin.
~~~
“We have cranberries!” Maia announced as they entered the Lewis home.
“Oh, thank god,” Becky said. “Someone was starting to get a little agitated.” She raised her eyebrows and tilted her head significantly toward the kitchen.
“So, you’re only happy to see me for my cranberries, huh?” Maia teased.
“I’ve got a whole list of reasons I’m happy to see you.” Becky gave her a quick kiss, then turned to poke Simon in the ribs. “But I’m only happy to see this fool for his cranberries.”
“Hey!” Simon protested, poking her right back.
“I guess I just don’t even rate, huh?” Jace asked.
Becky turned a wide, mischievous smile on him. “Oh, no. I’m happy to see you for an entirely different reason. I want to offer you a trade.”
“Don’t do it,” Simon said. “She’s sneaky, and she will rip you off.”
“I am sneaky,” Becky agreed, “but this is totally above board.” She turned back to Jace. “I hear that you and Maia are drinking buddies.”
“I’m not sure I like where this is going,” Maia commented.
“That’s probably a pretty accurate description of our relationship, sure,” Jace agreed.
“Which means you’ve seen Maia drunk,” Becky continued. “Which means you probably have embarrassing stories about my girlfriend. Stories that I’m more than willing to trade embarrassing stories of my brother to hear.”
“See?” Simon pointed at his sister. “Sneaky.”
“Yeah, babe, I’m not sure you’ve actually thought this through,” Maia said.
“No, I have,” Becky told her with a smirk. “I’ve also thought up all kinds of ways to convince you to forgive me.”
“Please don’t elaborate,” Simon said.
“Okay,” Maia said, “but I have an even better deal for you.”
“I’m listening.”
“How about we both tell embarrassing stories about Simon and Jace over dinner.” Maia leaned in and finished in a low voice. “And then you can show me how you were planning to get me to forgive you when we get back to your place tonight.”
“Oh,” Becky said. “Yeah, that’s a much better deal.” She turned to Jace. “Sorry, got a better offer. No hard feelings?”
Jace shrugged, biting back a laugh. “I mean, I can’t really blame you.”
“Is it too late to do Thanksgiving with your family?” Simon asked Jace. “Or we could just sit in the van and eat cranberries out of the can. That’s also an option that would be preferable to this.”
“Oh good, you found the cranberries.” Bubbe Helen emerged from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. She walked over and pulled Simon into a hug. “I knew my grandson would come through.”
Behind her, Becky shook her head emphatically, mouthing ‘lies.’
Simon kissed his grandmother’s cheek. “It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without cranberries.”
“That’s what I’ve been saying.” She turned a critical eye on Jace. He was pretty sure she still held a bit of a grudge over him supposedly proposing to Simon in a storage closet. “And what are your thoughts on cranberries?”
“Oh, uh.” Jace was pretty sure he’d never thought much about cranberries before this morning’s frantic search across half of New England. “I’m definitely pro-cranberry.”
“Speaking of which,” Simon interrupted, “we should get these groceries to the kitchen and get started on the pies. You’re going to love Jace’s pecan pie, Bubbe Helen. It’s the best I’ve ever had.”
“Pecan, huh?” Bubbe Helen gave Jace a considering look.
Jace nodded. “With browned butter. It’s a family recipe.” Technically, it was Alec’s recipe, but Alec was family, so he figured it counted.
Bubbe Helen nodded. “You’ll do.” Then she turned with a wide smile to greet Maia, and Jace let out a relieved sigh.
As they made their way to the kitchen, Simon bumped Jace with his shoulder and spoke in a low voice. “It’s cute that my grandmother makes you nervous.”
“It’s not cute,” Jace muttered. “She’s terrifying.”
When they arrived in the kitchen, Simon’s mother was checking the turkey.
“Another half-hour, I think,” she told them as she closed the oven door. “If you work fast, you can put the pies in as soon as the turkey comes out. I cleared some counter space where you can work over there. Do not touch anything else.
“Hi, sweetie,” she added as an afterthought, giving Simon a quick hug.
Simon returned the hug. “Hi, Mom. Pie plates still in the same place?”
“Bottom cabinet to the left of the sink,” she confirmed. “Is there anything else you two need to get started on the pies?”
“Pie plates to the left of the sink, half an hour, don’t touch anything,” Jace repeated back to her. “I think we’re good.”
“Perfect. I’m going to go toss the linens in the dryer. You boys get started on those pies, and I’ll be back to check on the turkey in,” she checked her watch, “twenty-eight minutes.”
Jace watched long enough to make sure she was out of earshot before saying, “If we’re ever crazy enough to do joint holidays, she and Maryse cannot be allowed in the kitchen at the same time.”
Simon chuckled. “Mom can be a little intense about holidays being perfect, but I think it’s just because she wants us to enjoy them.”
“I get it.” Jace knelt down to retrieve the pie plates from the cabinet. “I mean, you saw what Maryse and Alec were like just over Christmas dinner. Military campaigns are less well-orchestrated than Thanksgiving at the Lightwood house.”
“Is it weird having Thanksgiving here instead of with your own family?” Simon asked as he rolled out a pie crust.
Jace set the pie plates down next to the pastry mat. “I am having Thanksgiving with my family. I’m having it with you.”
Simon smiled without looking up from the pastry mat. “If you keep saying romantic things, I’m going to kiss you, and then we’ll never get the pies ready to go in the oven on time.”
“I wasn’t being romantic,” Jace insisted. “It’s just, it took me a long time after the Lightwoods took me in to really start thinking of them as family, to accept that they thought of me as family. I’m not sure I ever would have if it wasn’t for Alec and Iz. They taught me that family can be people you choose, not just something you’re born with.” He shrugged. “And I chose you.”
Simon looked up from the now perfectly-rolled pie crust. “That was super romantic.”
“Maybe a little,” Jace conceded. He lifted the crust into one of the pie plates and began smoothing it into the corners.
“That’s actually part of why I wanted us to do Thanksgiving here this year,” Simon said as he began rolling out the second crust. “I know you haven’t always felt like you had a family, and even though I know you do now, I wanted to show you that you get to have my family now, too.”
Jace wound his arms around Simon’s waist. “Now who’s being romantic?”
The pies were not ready to go into the oven on time.
My Mothers Recipe Book
Alfred sighed walking into the master bedroom tray carrying two large coffees and a few sheets of paper printed from the computer. He was not looking forward to this. Not one bit he had managed to keep the boys quiet about it for the time being but now was the time, there had been...articles online from uncredited news outlets which he knew both you and Bruce avoided with a passion things could be said online which couldn't be printed, cruel and vicious things. But this time they had slipped up big time and he had a name. There had been personal things mentioned in these articles, things that only someone close to you would know at first this online tabloids scoop had been harmless or coincidence, stating the area where you grew up, school you went to and your previous apartment then it became more personal silly things at first, favorite brands, hangouts previous jobs and qualifications and where you work now that caused a few problems now you had to be picked up after shifts by either him Bruce or Dick. you'd mentioned that it had become worse somehow they knew where you were most of the time when you were out on your own places become overrun with the paparazzi having to be picked up by Dick from your favorite take away joint a few days ago when out of nowhere there was camera's everywhere then the next day horrid articles over your nonexistent weight gain and the 'cravings' for the pregnancy that also didn't exist. But this....this was worse probably the worst article to come out, it was an article on how your parents died and how you took on Jack... Going in to detail on how you 'blamed superman' for their death, which could blow up in everyone's face. Alfred was livid but vindicated this time their source was named accidentally he had managed to print it off before it was corrected, a statement was already being circulated that this was fake news, you did not blame anyone for the death of your parents and this was the doing of a vicious woman trying to cause you trouble. Thankfully Clark had got wind of it and was already working on something to help. But Alfred will not be settled until everything was cleared up in the courts. Sighing he opened the door to the master bedroom you was curled up in bed tears streaking your face Bruce was trying to comfort you but Alfred could tell he was furious.
"I suppose you have seen it? then I am already on it I've taken the liberty to have a statement sent out that you don't blame anyone for their passing, Mr Kent is also already working on something to show the truth." Bruce nodded stiffly you just sniffed rubbing your eyes making Alfred  gripped the tray tighter this was not going to be easy to say.
"Who? WHO WOULD DO THIS?" you threw the tablet down on the bed Bruce tried to calm you down
"We will find out who sweets I promise-" Alfred crossed the room placing the tray down then lifted the paper
"It was your boss Y/n" you and Bruce snapped your gazes to the Englishman
"What- How do you know?"
“She was named as their source then it quickly changed I managed to print it off before it was changed tho...I have been watching these articles, Damien and Jack found them just after your kidnapping at first it was harmless but then it got more and more personal here see for your self this is the first one they put up before they corrected it" you took the paper from him with a shaky hand glaring there in black and white was your bosses name as there close source.
"Why would she do this? you know what don't answer that I'm going to work" you strode past the two men Bruce followed you over to the dresser.
"Sweets we can handle this-" you turned abruptly to him making him flinch when he saw your face you was seething
"I know that I'm going in to talk just talk  and there is something there that I need t pick up before anything happens nothing more I promise"
"I can come with you-"
"Bruce honey you have to be at the tower today I will be fine....okay I will be calm but shes done a lot of damage here, I'm getting death threats on twitter! she doesn't get to breeze through this no fucking way shes going to look me in the eye and tell me why!" Bruce nodded knowing that you wasn't going to let this go.
"Alfred can take you....take Tim just in case" you nodded pulling your pajama top off ignoring the way Alfred shielded his eyes with the article just in time making Bruce scoff
"Tim why whats he gonna do?....oh yeah I forgot" you quickly slipped on a black pair of leggings and oversized sweater and left the room calling for Tim to get his ass out of bed.
"I will look after her sir and I will have eyes on the whole thing" Bruce nodded"Thank you Alfred I know you will take care of us you always have" Alfred smiled at him leaving the room with your coffee taking to the kitchen. twenty minuets after Bruce left you was in the back of the rolls Royce sitting wound up Damien was as stiff as a board next to you Jack had tagged along to looking just as angry fists clenched, Tim was supposed to come but once Damien heard what had happens he had....insisted Tim tried to reason with him but...apparently when it come down to it Damien is the one in the family not to fuck with as Tim had backed down pretty fast and by pretty fast you meant as soon as he looked into the younger boys eyes.
"Boys please relax your making me nervous, we are just going to talk I want answers"
"That’s such a bitch thing to do tho, to bring mom and dad into it..." you looked to jack he was as sad as he was angry it made you worse...you were out for blood today no one fucks with your family. Damien was worrying you, he was quiet calm and you could feel waves of....well you didn't know what it was but it was making you want to run ad hide from him yourself, killer instinct or just pure unadulterated wrath and violence coiled tight in the small teen your blood would have run cold if you hadn't been so angry yourself.
"Dami? you alright there bud?" he turned stiffly his eyes said it all he was not alright he was pissed biting at the bit to fuck this woman up. Shit. you didn't have all the details but you know Damien was raised to be , well putting it bluntly a killer and from little bite you heard he was pretty good at it.
"I'm fine, this woman how long have you worked for her?"
"Shit its gotta be five years nearly six" Damien nodded then looked back out of the window you was here her car was out the front. you took a deep breath seeing the barrage cameras out the front all of them held one of the cafes takeaway cups in hand.
"Would you like me to pull around the side?"
"No I am not afraid, I wont let her see me run its time to grow up...If I want to be with Bruce this is what it means,I have to let them know me and I will stand on my own two feet" Alfred faltered stopping the car you cleared your face and before the butler had a chance to get out to open the door you were out of the car Damien and Jack close behind the Alfred who tried pushing to catch up as the paps smothered you. You bit your lip moving forward willing them all away as it got to much then Damien locked his hand in yours squeezing Jack held your arm, you locked eyes with them and smiled you wasn't alone. With a deep breath you turned around abruptly holding your head high and spoke clearly to the manic reporters who was shouting questions waving and yelling to get your attention.
"EXCUSE ME! that's better I apologize for shouting like that, I just wanted to get your attention, I promise to answer all your questions in a few moments but I've left something important at work and would appreciate you allowing me to pick it up first if that's okay with you" You felt a burst of confidence when you managed to get their attention quieting them one man scoffed
"What are you going to get?"
"My mothers recipe book" they all looked stumped a ripple of whispers surrounded you all
"How do we know you'll come back out?" you blinked looking at the other man who had asked and then nodded to the car
"My rides out here I wont be getting far without it" they all quieted down nodding letting you pass. Alfred stood a little stumped the confidence you had used he hadn't seen before he quickly jogged to catch up behind you entering the cafe. as you made your way in you headed straight for the kitchen Alfred lingered by the door making sure the small hidden camera in his jacket had a clear shot of what was going to happen in the small kitchen. as you walked in you noted that your boss was milling about the kitchen you smiled like nothing was wrong and walked over to where your mothers hand written recipe book was and tucked it into your bag .
"Y/n where are you going with that?" you faced her smiling
"Oh Damien likes the blue berry marzipan muffins so going to try and convert it into pancakes that way Alfred technically whine about muffins for breakfast." you said motioning to Damien who looked at you confused but nodded anyway you winked at him, then handed your bag to Jack who was standing behind Alfred.
"Ooh they would be good tell me how they turn out and we could do them here" you laughed a little at the woman, she had no idea
"I might just do that, tag you in twitter or face book...Bruce was talking about me getting my own shop around here after I made some at home" she looked at you from the top of her eyes
"Oh really?" you laughed and leaned forward
"Yeah but you know me no head for business...but I have got a head for other things you know I'm an overthinker its quite good actually I can figure things out pretty quick" sensing something was wrong she gulped and stopped doing the order forms leaning on the counter
"Is everything okay?" you moved a little and leaned back crossing your arms letting you smile fall into what must have been a nasty face as she swallowed
"I don't know how about you tell me" she laughed nervously trying to wave you off
"What do you mean whats happ-"
"Why did you do it?"
"Excuse me?"
"How much did they pay you? I hope it was a lot." you said looking around the kitchen slowly as if really seeing it for the first time, falling apart tiles, a tap that leaks, flickering light and dirty grout could do with being ripped out and starting again.
"Do what?"
"You know what? that articles online I know it was you" she laughed shaking her head
"I haven't done any articles I think your getting a little big headed aren't you? not everyone cares about you, " you nodded slyly
"They didn't tell you did they? you were named yesterday in the one about my Parents" the color drained from her face and she stuttered.
"Wh-what?! they said they wouldn't do that!" you stood tall smirking at her the smug feeling didn't last long as you realized this woman who had been like a second mum to you had betrayed you, literally put a price tag on your trust and sold it.
"So you have been giving out information about me...gossiping about me to the tabloids..Why Why would you do that?" she had the decency to look a little ashamed of herself.
"I'm sorry, they offered money for an interview when I was seen at the Restaurant with you...At first it was harmless and I thought I could ramp up business if I let people know where you worked...it escalated from there" you closed your eyes trying to calm yourself down Damien growled loud at the woman but you placed a hand on his shoulder pushing him back a little.
"Escalated your damn right it escalated You gave out my old address! what if me and Jack was still there and better yet why was you telling them where I was? they followed me for days! and rumors of pregnancies?" She flinched going to walk around the center island in the kitchen making to hug you but you took a step back, eyes searching hers for remorse but all you saw was the panic of a woman caught out.
"Do you know I had to talk Bruce down from that one he wasn't even angry that he was the last to know! he was over the moon that we might have a child on the way and I had to break his heart and sit him down in our room and explain to him I wasn't pregnant that it was a lie! only to find out it had come from one of my closest friend's. Do you know what its like to do something like that to someone you love? to upset them like that he was crushed ...And if that wasn't enough you had to bring up my parents! you didn't even know them and you know how I feel about the whole thing and about superman!" she shook her head
"I know you don't blame him for their death, I never said you did I swear I just said that you still found it hard without them here, that you wished they were here to see jack grow up that's all I swear" you shook your head.
"I'm sorry but I don't believe you...these five years how much was it worth? you put a price on my trust..." she ran a hand threw her hair huffing anxiously
"I'm sorry I never meant for it to go this far...I needed the money" you laughed "You needed the money nearly eleven hundred a day goes in that till and you needed the money? sorry if I don't buy that." she got defensive looking you up and down
"Well its not like you would understand" you shook your head
"And what is that supposed to mean?"
"Well we can’t all be sugar babies like you? I've got bills to pay you know rent , tax water that kind of stuff you going to tell me if someone wanted a few comments from you for a few thousands dollars you wouldn't do it" you clenched your jaw, Damien growled at the woman trying so hard not to pounce her.
"No I wouldn't have because we were friends!....Is that what you think of me? a sugar baby?"
"Well that seems to be your claim to fame doesn't it? fucking a billionaire then suddenly you've been given everything? the poor orphan girl who heroically took on her brat brother, one night on your back and your set for life. House,money boyfriend rewards for loosing your dignity no class at all!" you froze that hurt, the venom and spite in her words
"No class...It would seem I have more then you. I haven't ever done anything to you, so all this came from what jealousy? having the paparazzi follow me spreading rumors? for what a few more coffee sales and a bit of revenge? because I got everything you'll never have, A Family and someone to share my life with.... That’s very sad" you moved to got to the door  she smiled nastily no point in her continuing with the nice girl act now she had shown her true colors. "you know your not famous? walking around like you are but your not" you smiled widely at her leaning in.
"No I'm not truly famous...but I'm more famous then you, I quit by the way and I do hope you have money for a lawyer because this is slander and invasion of privacy"
"You've got no proof it was me." she said snidely
"Oh but I have, a recorded confession smile your on camera" she froze knowing she was utterly fucked you smiled and leaned in to her ear.
"I am going to sit back and watch you fall, you tired to destroy me and my new life and failed but most of all you hurt the ones I love so now I am going to destroy yours, I’m going to take you to the cleaners, your going to lose everything" she gasped no one fucked with your family she hurt you but more importantly she hurt Jack and Bruce and she was gonna have to have deep pockets to settle this one cos you was out for blood. You did one final sweep of the kitchen wanting to rub salt in the wound.
"You know...I always liked this place...Think I will buy it once you go bankrupt after our court battle" she stood there mouth agape as you turned walking through the door. Jack and Alfred was let you pass then quicker than you could register you heard a loud shout turning you saw her charge at you making to attack you but Damien was to quick for her capturing her throwing her back you winced hearing her back hit the metal counter in the kitchen
"GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY MOTHER!" you all froze as he shouted not knowing what to do Alfred nodded his head in Damien direction.Get him out. you placed a hand on his shoulder he panted shaking he was angry very angry then looked at you
"Dami, thank you but we have to go now okay? come on Dami go to the car for me please"
"Are you hurt Ummi?" you shook your head not understand what he called you, or why Alfred had gasped so loud at it but didn't care all you wanted was to calm him down and get him out of here.
"No honey you stopped her before she could get to me"
"A-are you mad?" you smiled at him shaking your head again
"Of course not, you protected me just like you said you would now come on out to the car that's enough excitement for one day"and you looked at Alfred he knew what you was asking and nodded he had caught that on film thank fuck.
"She isn't your mother you little brat!" you somehow managed to pull Damien from the kitchen behind you.
"Shut your fucking mouth!!" you you shouted at her livid ushered the others out taking a few breaths as you walked out into the crowd.
"Boys in the car, Jack you got my bag still?" he nodded but Damien was quiet as you pushed him thought the crowd stopping half way taking a deep breath this had to be done, you had to get used to the public side, dick had said something the other day making you stop and think, if you don't interact with these people then you cant ever prove them wrong, you wont be able to ever stand up for yourself and that's what you had to do.You cant let Bruce do this for you all the time, not anymore.
"I'm going to make a statement are you all ready?" most nodded getting cameras ready for pictures and holding out recorders.
"I'm am sure you have all been listening and reading to recent rumors circulating about me in recent weeks. I have been following these myself tho had to be discreet about it, you see these rumors have been started by someone I was close to and I wanted to try and find out who, this is why I have been quiet about it.Last night there was a typo in the article about my parents passing nameing and shameing this woman,she has been handing out details of my personal life, selling my information and been telling lies one of which cause heartache for both myself and my family and has caused many problems for me in the past weeks telling online papers and paparazzi my location anytime she knew. this is a woman who I considered a dear friend and who I have worked for for the past five nearly six years I came here today to confront her, she has admitted to me today about her behavior and revealed to me and my family today that it was done out of spite and jealousy and also thought she would make more money if customers knew I worked here and would come in to try and get a glimpse of Bruce in the cafe. Today I quit my job here and over the next few days will take action threw the courts. I don't not blame anyone for the death of my parents at all, they heard the threat the world was given just like the rest of us but still chose to got to metropolis for their anniversary, they ignored the warnings and paid for it with there lives they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. And no I am not and have not ever been pregnant, this particular lie of hers caused myself and Bruce a lot of heartache which I can not forgive her for, The address she gave out as my residence is not my home any longer I moved nearly six weeks ago so please stop going there I'm assuming the new tenants would like a rest, I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to end these things but I just wanted to clear the air and explain to you exactly what was happening" there was a few chuckles echoing across the crowd person shouted out
"So do you Hate superman or not?" you laughed
"No of course I don't, he has done a lot for us even saved myself once a long time ago and I am forever great full to him for that, I am only sad that he has been dragged into this woman's lies and I can only apologize for that I'm sure he has more important things to worry about.Now if that's all I'd like to get going...Its a bit chilly out here and I'm sure the boys are getting board in the car." you turned and headed to the car and amazingly enough they let you, opting to take photos of the cafe you smiled smugly as Alfred pulled away speaking
"Well she wanted fame now she has it" Jack laughed
"Yes something like that....was that alright? I've not done it before on my own...Oh my god what if Bruce is mad? do you think he will be mad I did that? What if I said to much or not enough or-"
"It was perfect miss Y/n you explained yourself with dignity and respect, you were straight to the point and covered everything Bruce wont be mad if anything I think he will be extremely proud of you for handling it the way you did." you sighed and slumped
"Oh thank god all I was thinking was 'be like Bruce, be like Clark, be like Bruce, be like Clark" Alfred through his head back a little laughing and Damian shuffled closer looking down fiddling with his fingers
"You okay there Dami?" you watched Alfred tilt the rear view mirror
"I-I'm sorry I called you mother...and Ummi it wont happen again" you sighed dragging him towards you.
"Hey,Look Damien Your father and I are really serious you know that right?" he nodded slowly waiting for you to rant at him.
"And Because we are serious ...we have already spoke about you boys and this...Mother issue, I would be delighted if you called me mother or mom or u-ummi? but you don't have to...But if you do then I would be so happy, so so happy. But as far as I'm concerned we are a family already either way so you call me what you like okay? and that goes for your brothers to." you watched as Damian's face lit up he looked so young.
"R-Really you don't mind?" you shook your head pulling him in for a hug. Once you all got home you moved everyone into the kitchen and started mixing batter for muffins using your mothers cook book
"Are you really going to make me some blueberry and marzipan muffins?" you nodded to Damian
"Absolutely you liked em right?" he smiled nodding sitting at the counter watching you and Alfred zigzag across the kitchen like a well oiled machine the boys including Tim and Jason sat watching nibbling on the left over marzipan.
"Tim flick threw that book and find coffee walnut muffins" you called out as you placed the current batch of muffins in the oven Tim was quick to take the book from the side and look for the recipe.
"Coffee walnut? that's different for a muffin?" Alfred asked you smiled nodding
"Yep when mum found a flavor combo she liked we had all sorts of it thought Tim would like it... that book there is every Cooke family recipe its why I had to get it quick before all this kicked off" Jason peeked over Tim's shoulder.
"All that fuss for a book?" Jack smiled slyly
"Yeah but more then that...everything in the cafe was mums recipes, all the baking anyway without that book they don't have nothing they never made copies, can't make nothing that's why when we took it she asked for it back, she probably hasn't even realized yet. "Holy shit! you go girl!" Jason high fived you making you giggle
"I see now why dad calls you mama bear your scary" you frowned
"He still calls me that?" they all nodded humming you blushed you didn't know that, you looked up as Bruce came through the door dropping his coat on the floor pushing past everyone you frowned thinking something was wrong until he swooped you up into a long kiss pressing you against the counter making you moan the boys cringed and left the kitchen fast.
"EWW THEIR GONNA DO IT NEAR THE MUFFINS!!" you laughed pulling away
"And what was that for Mr Wayne?" Alfred cleared his throat moving to mix the new batter
"Saw the footage then sir? I told you to wait until later to view it we all know you cant help yourself when she gets... what was it again Mama bear?" you whined throwing a tea towel at Alfred making him smirk
"Yes Alfred I did and I'm afraid I'm going to steal her away its urgent" he said a smile in his voice you sighed
"Urgent huh?" he smiled hoisting you up onto his hips making you gasp feeling him grind his erection onto your core
"Oh yes very urgent, urgent enough in fact that I had to cancel the rest of my meetings and probably have a few speeding tickets in the post" you laughed loud at him
"Oh my god!" he quickly spun around making his way to the stairs
"FOR FUCK SAKE PICK A ROOM AND FUCK!!! STOP WANDERING AROUND!!JACK TELL YOUR SISTER"
"FUCK OFF TELLING MY SISTER YOU TELL YOU DAD HE'S THE ONE RUNNING IN WITH A BONER TIM!"
"STOP FUCKING YELLING!!" you rolled your eyes as they continued shouting and screaming at one another.
"You gonna parent them or no?" Bruce shook his head wincing as Jason screeched indicating that someone had hit/pushed/jumped on him
"A little preoccupied Sweets maybe after I've sorted you out....Besides Alfred wont let them kill each other" you laughed as he made it to the top of the stairs and rounded the corner hearing Tim's scream of
"FINALLY OI! THEIR OUT THE KITCHEN QUICK!" and multiple footsteps running back to the kitchen where the baking was happening .
What are your favorite recipes?
This is a tough one because I have so many! Tacos and Salmon are my go to easy dinners on nights I don't want to eat or we are really busy, so we have them almost every week. But, my absolute favorite recipes are probably chicken and wild rice soup, Thai basil eggplant, salsa fresca chicken, sweet potato and black bean stuffed peppers, my homemade bolognese over chickpea pasta or zoodles, chili, chicken lettuce wraps, and pesto chicken with chickpea pasta. My inlaws make chicken pot pie, carmel chicken, and beer can chicken recipes that I also love but have yet to master.
For someone who habitually skips breakfast I really love breakfast food. My favorites are whole wheat banana muffins, avocado toast, and eggs in any form but especially fritatas. My cinnamon chip scones are to die for. I also make the best biscuits and gravy (I will die on that hill), but I only make it once or twice a year and always at my FIL's request.
While I like to cook and I am fairly good at it, baking is my strong suit. My basic chocolate chip cookies and brownies are go to crowd pleasers. I make really good cakes, with my best (in my opinion) being turtle, hot chocolate, and spice cake. I also have a salted carmel stuffed chocolate chip cookie recipe that I pull out when I want to really impress people because they are so so so good.
Basically, I'm a gal who loves food stuck in a life of ED recovery. I'm trying to learn to love eating it as much as I love making it for other people.
Mastering Baking: Essential Bakeware Every Home Baker Needs
Baking is both a science and an art, requiring precision, technique, and the right tools to achieve delicious results. For home bakers looking to elevate their baking game, having the essential bakeware is crucial. In this guide, we'll explore the must-have bakeware items that every home baker needs to master the art of baking. When it comes to sourcing these essential tools, partnering with a reliable kitchenware supplier is essential to ensure quality and durability in your baking equipment.
### The Essential Bakeware Every Home Baker Needs
1. **Mixing Bowls**: Mixing bowls are the foundation of any baker's toolkit. Opt for a set of mixing bowls in varying sizes, preferably made of durable materials like stainless steel or glass. These bowls are versatile and can be used for mixing ingredients, whisking eggs, and storing dough.
2. **Measuring Cups and Spoons**: Accurate measurements are key to successful baking. Invest in a set of measuring cups and spoons to ensure precise quantities of ingredients. Look for sets that include both standard and metric measurements for versatility.
3. **Baking Sheets**: Baking sheets, also known as sheet pans or cookie sheets, are essential for baking cookies, pastries, and other baked goods. Choose heavy-duty, non-stick baking sheets that distribute heat evenly for consistent results. Rimmed baking sheets are ideal for preventing spills and ensuring easy handling.
4. **Cake Pans**: Cake pans are indispensable for baking cakes, cupcakes, and other sweet treats. Opt for sturdy, non-stick cake pans in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different recipes. Round cake pans are perfect for layer cakes, while square or rectangular pans are ideal for bars and brownies.
5. **Muffin Tins**: Muffin tins are essential for baking muffins, cupcakes, and mini cakes. Choose non-stick muffin tins with sturdy construction to ensure even baking and easy release of baked goods. Silicone muffin liners are a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to paper liners.
6. **Pie Plates**: Pie plates are essential for baking pies, quiches, and tarts. Look for pie plates made of durable materials like ceramic or glass, with fluted edges for a decorative touch. Deep-dish pie plates are ideal for making fruit pies with generous fillings.
7. **Loaf Pans**: Loaf pans are essential for baking bread, pound cakes, and meatloaf. Choose non-stick loaf pans with sturdy construction to ensure even baking and easy release of baked goods. Mini loaf pans are perfect for baking individual-sized bread or cake loaves.
8. **Rolling Pin**: A rolling pin is essential for rolling out dough for pies, cookies, and pastries. Opt for a wooden or silicone rolling pin with smooth, tapered edges for easy handling and precise rolling. Adjustable rolling pins with removable rings allow for consistent dough thickness.
9. **Cooling Racks**: Cooling racks are essential for cooling baked goods and preventing them from becoming soggy. Choose sturdy wire cooling racks with a grid pattern to allow for air circulation and even cooling. Stackable cooling racks are ideal for saving space in small kitchens.
10. **Baking Dishes**: Baking dishes are essential for baking casseroles, gratins, and other savory dishes. Choose oven-safe baking dishes made of durable materials like ceramic or stoneware, with deep sides to accommodate generous portions. Rectangular or oval baking dishes are versatile options for a variety of recipes.
### Conclusion
In conclusion, mastering the art of baking requires having the essential bakeware to support your culinary endeavors. By investing in quality mixing bowls, measuring tools, baking sheets, cake pans, and other essential bakeware items, home bakers can elevate their baking game and achieve delicious results with confidence. Whether you're baking sweet treats or savory delights, having the right bakeware is key to success in the kitchen.
Cooking with the Captain: Jack Easy’s Pea Soup
Tumblr media
A long-standing goal of mine has been to attempt to replicate the pea soup enjoyed by Jack Easy, his first hearty meal aboard HMS Harpy in Frederick Marryat’s novel Mr. Midshipman Easy. Jack has been incapacitated by seasickness on his first voyage, and when he finally recovers he asks for muffins, milk, and coffee. The incredulous master's mate reminds him that the ship is now on blue water, far from any bumboat women. Mesty the steward suggests pea soup instead, since some still remains in the galley's copper kettle.
In a few minutes the black brought down a bowl of soup and whole peas swimming in it, put before our hero a tin bread-basket full of small biscuit, called midshipmen's nuts, and the pepper-castor. Jack's visions of tea, coffee, muffins, dry toast, and milk, vanished as he perceived the mess; but he was very hungry, and he found it much better than he expected: and he moreover found himself much the better after he had swallowed it.
For guidance on the pea soup and ship's bread I turned to Janet Macdonald's book Feeding Nelson's Navy, which I highly recommend. ('Midshipman's nuts' are simply broken-up pieces of ship's bread, described by Herman Melville as well as Frederick Marryat).
Whole peas floating in the soup are specifically mentioned by Marryat, ruling out the more typical dried split peas found in US grocery stores. There is some debate about whether the 19th century Royal Navy used whole dried peas or split peas; Macdonald suggests that around 1856 split peas were issued, but ships may have used them earlier and the evidence is inconclusive. Other dried pulses could be substituted for peas in far-flung stations, but in Marryat books it's always peas. (Recalling Mr. Chucks' threat directed at a sailor in Peter Simple: "Mark my words, you burgoo-eating, pea-soup-swilling, trowsers-scrubbing son of a bitch!”)
Whole dried peas, unlike split peas, require overnight soaking like dried beans. I have previously experimented with them in historical recipes, and while you can get away with no presoaking if you simmer your stew for a good five or six hours, this time I let them soak. As you can see, they gain a lot of volume in the process.
Tumblr media
Unable to find ham bones, or salt pork not cut into thin slices, I ended up making a pea soup with a slightly suspect amount of fresh vegetables. Slightly suspect. My excuse is that fresh produce could be obtained in any port, as well as by packet ships (according to Macdonald), and the early 19th century Royal Navy was full of some determined characters as far as obtaining favourite foods in difficult circumstances. Macdonald describes a luxurious array of spices and condiments purchased by officers to improve their provisions, and most impressively, Admiral James de Saumarez kept a pet Guernsey cow on board to supply fresh milk and cream. (Jack Easy was on the wrong ship!)
I followed Macdonald's recipe for ship's biscuit, including kneading the dough for a full 30 minutes. "Use white flour for the captain's table, wholemeal for the mess decks," she instructs. Inspired by a (soft) bread recipe from The Fort George Bill of Fare that was a great success for me, I used approximately 40% whole wheat and 60% white flour. Maybe it would have been more "silky" if it was entirely white flour, as Macdonald describes the properly kneaded dough, but I doubt that it would be any less cement-like in baked form.
Tumblr media
The resulting cracker-like product is just as hard as legend, although it has a good taste when fresh and weevil-free. I'm reminded of the scene in Jacob Faithful when apprentice watermen Jacob and Tom lose their wherry and find themselves pressed on a King's ship:
“It's hard to lose our bread this way,” replied I.
“We will find you bread, and hard enough you will find it,” replied the lieutenant, laughing; “it's like a flint."
“So we ask for bread, and you give us a stone,” said Tom; “that's 'gainst Scripture.”
One thing I have noticed in trying to source authentic recipes from the Age of Sail is a lot of jokey language in modern interpretations. Even the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich instructs you to "scrub the decks or hoist the mainsail" as your dough rests. The anecdote about putting ship's biscuit into a cloth bread bag and whacking it with a belaying pin to break it up, however, has the ring of truth.
I was able to get some coarse midshipmen's nuts by putting my ship's bread into a plastic freezer bag and hitting it with a rolling pin, but the bag didn't fare so well and was torn by the hard bread. If I make it again, one thing I'm going to try is rolling out the dough as thin as possible: only 3mm/one-eighth inch. I made it twice as thick as that, following Macdonald's directions. Even without leavening it swells slightly in the oven, and the word "flint" keeps getting used for a reason. (Herman Melville calls midshipmen's nuts "small, broken, flinty bits of biscuit" in his novel Typee). The thinner the biscuit, the easier it is to crumble and eventually soften in hot liquid.
Tumblr media
After a good 20 minutes, at least, in the hot pea soup, my midshipmen's nuts were finally edible. They completely absorbed the liquid for a very hearty, filling meal. I can see why sailors would enjoy them in this form, besides the difficulty of trying to eat such stony bread without assistance.  Freshly-ground black pepper like Jack Easy had at his disposal would probably improve it, but I made do with prepared ground pepper in a less aesthetically pleasing form.
Comfortember Day 18. Hot Cocoa
The Mayday Cafe
@comfortember
Read On AO3
There was a quaint little cafe nestled in the side of a nondescript building in Queens. A little sign hanging over the door with the words The Mayday Cafe pressed into the weather worn but strong steel. Many people passed it by each day without knowing it was there, but there were many, still, who knew of its existence.
From the outside it wasn't much, its perpetually slightly misted windows not showing much of the inner workings of the few employees and owners to the street but let a warm light filter through on early mornings and sun kissed evenings.
It had become a favourite of the residents and commuters of the surrounding area, it's food and drink were always decadent, always and fresh; the service and friendliness of its staff and owners only served to make it sweeter.
Just as it was a favourite of its regular customers, it was a favourite of a boy with curly brown hair who loved to wear nerdy T-shirts with any outfit he could wear them with.
Peter had loved the cafe ever since he could remember and he remembered a lot.
He remembered when his parents were still alive, how they would take him to visit the little shop. May would greet him with a kiss to his nose and Ben would swing him up to sit on the counter next to him as the man worked.
Peter would watch as he knead and rolled different dough for pastries and biscuits, mixed together the batters for cakes, sponges, and muffins. To the little boy it all looked like magic. It tasted like it too, when Ben would pass him bits of the "mini munchies" he always made for Peter to taste.
Eventually as Peter grew more steady and less clumsy, Ben would set him up on a stool next to him so that he was tall enough to reach the counter and he would help his uncle add and mix different ingredients. One day he was even able to crack an egg without getting any of the shells in the mixture!
Peter hopped off of his stool, careful not to bump anything that was on the counter and ran off to tell his parents and May about his professional egg cracking skills. They all praised him with wide, beaming smiles, proclaiming him the mini master chef.
With a proud grin, Peter turned and ran through the doors to the kitchen in the back of the cafe only to trip on a bag of flour, the powder exploding into the air around him as laughter from his family rang like bells at the sight.
---
When Peter was little he had always dreamed of spending all of his days at Mayday with Ben and May but he had never known that he would get it at the expense of his parents.
After the plane crash he was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle. It just made sense. He had never thought that it almost hadn't happened, that they had fought tooth and nail against CPS to adopt him when they protested for Peter's welfare at the lack of extra money they couple would have after taking him on. They won though, they got their kid and May only had to pick up a few extra evening shifts at a local clinic for it to work.
The woman had worried about leaving Ben without her help at the cafe so much more often but he had reassured her that he would be okay. Ben told her that Peter's friend Ned's older sister offered to help out for free as long as she was able to snack on a couple of the delicious foods that Ben made. They couple had protested originally, not wanting to have the teenager to work for nothing but eventually they were worn down and Alice Leeds became one of their favourite and most loyal employees they had ever had.
She would even help keep Ned and Peter entertained when they sat in the cafe after school while Alice and Ned's parents worked and May and Ben were busy with the clinic and cafe.
As the boy's grew Peter started helping Ben more with different tasks in the little shop. He would help with taking orders and then walking them to the customers. He was also getting better with his baking that Ben would let him make some of the easy muffin and cake recipes by himself until Peter had perfected them almost to the level of his uncle. Ben would joke that he was easily good enough to take over the own man's job.
Peter would always laugh it off, saying he wasn't nearly as good as his uncle. He had thought that if he did take over, it would be because Ben and May had decided to retire. Never once had it crossed his mind that he would have to do it so soon.
But it was. Peter and May lost Ben, they lost the man who was such a part of them and it hit the both of them hard.
May couldn't keep them afloat anymore, the cost of their apartment and the cafe and Peter's school supplies were too much for her single job. She tried picking up more shifts, finding another job, but it wasn't enough.
It scared her that they could lose the one thing they had left of Ben, that they could lose the little cafe that was so dear to them.
Peter wished he could help but no job he could find paid enough. The ones he did find didn't work out because of the hours he had to spend at school and then the cafe.
But May and Peter did it all for as long as they could, hope and funds dwindling away as the days went.
Until Harley Keener walked through the door.
---
Raindrops fell hard and heavy from the deep grey clouds gathered high above the towering New York buildings.
Most people had remembered their umbrellas after checking the weather in the morning and hearing on the news the evening before about the rains expected to come.
Everyone but one Harley Keener. No, he had forgotten his up in his room at the penthouse level of Stark Tower. Yes, you heard that right. Stark Tower, where Harley stayed because of an opportunity from Tony to work on a higher level of education in the city rather than be stuck in Rose Hill forever.
So here he was, darting down a street in Queens because not only had he forgotten his umbrella but he had missed his bus as well. Getting more soaked as the seconds passed, Harley spotted but looked like the sign to a little cafe tucked into the side of a building.
He ran towards it, careful  not to slip on the slick pavement under his feet. Slipping in through the door, he was hit with a wave of sweet smelling warmth and a familiar voice calling out a greeting. Footsteps came towards him and a towel was held out to him. Filling the towel his eyes trailed up the arm and chest to the head of curls he would see in the halls of Midtown and occasionally in class.
"Peter, right? Seen you in school, we've been partnered a few times." Harley asked as he gratefully took the towel, drying off as he took in the sight and smell of the cafe. "You work here?"
Peter Parker smiled at him, eyes tired but bright. "Own it actually. With my aunt. I work here after school." He explained, before his face turned a little red. It was cute.
"Uh, yeah. Peter. Parker. I'm uh, I'm Peter Parker." The brown eyed teen said awkwardly before coughing and gesturing to one of the tables behind him. "How would you like something warm to eat or drink?"
"I would love that."
Harley left that day, a $30 tip on the table, and his number on a napkin.
Peter sent him a message that night and neither knew how it happened but they started speaking every day. Harley started sitting with Peter, Ned, and MJ at lunch, he joined them on projects and assignments.
Somewhere along the line the smiles and looks they shared changed, the late night conversations becoming more close and intimate than either had expected.
Harley showed up one day at Mayday with a single rose, asking Peter if he would go to a movie with him, and Peter (to Harley's delight) accepted.
From that day on, Harley visited the cafe and had a drink and some food. Come rain or shine, after school he was there.
It didn't surprise Harley when Tony became curious about the cafe that Harley spent so much time at and the boy he spoke so much about.
And so Tony decided that he wanted to meet Peter. What better way to do that than to visit the very cafe the boy worked at?
---
When Tony Stark followed Harley through the door, Peter's eyes widened. His boyfriend had told him about Tony, how they met and how the two had bonded and become closer after Tony had brought Harley up to New York.
Peter had heard stories of the man blowing up toasters because he was bored and making a flying pen during a meeting that he'd been stuck in.
The stories still didn't take away from the awe and admiration of seeing his idol in the flesh.
Harley pulled Tony over to where Peter had been sitting and working on his homework in the spare time where the cafe was empty of other customers. Sitting himself down and planting a kiss to Peter's cheek. Once Tony sat down, he introduced the two.
"It's uh, it's really awesome to meet you, Mr. Stark." Peter grinned at the man and Harley could see the energy and awe trying to break through his attempt at a calm appearance.
Tony gave an easy smile. "Good to meet you too, Mr. Parker. Harley's told me a lot about you, seems you have our resident potato gun expert wrapped around your finger." The man teased, delighting in the flush that appeared on both boy's cheeks.
"Oh!" Peter jumped up from the table, a few papers sliding across the table in his haste. The teen darted towards the counter and placed a menu in front of Tony. "Is there anything I can get you, sir?"
Tony frowned slightly at the moniker but knew from Harley that there would be no quick or easy way to convince Peter to call him Tony. He glanced over the menu, deciding to go with an apple danish and a hot chocolate, forgoing his usual black coffee for something different.
When Peter made his way to start the hot chocolate and grab a fresh danish, Tony's eye caught on one of the papers that had scattered on the table moments before in Peter's jump to grab a menu. Tony reached out and slid the nearest one closer, his eyebrows rising when he read over the formulae and calculations scrawled over the page.
Just then, Peter returned, cocoa and danish in hand. He set it down in front of Tony, a flush setting on his cheeks for a second time when he saw his homework in the man's hand. "Sorry, I'll tidy it up in a moment!"
"Wait. Peter, this is good. Really good." Tony stopped him, "I knew you were smart, I mean Harley met you at Midtown, but this… this is high level, kid." Tony looked at Peter.
Peter looked back at him, eyes shining at the praise from Tony even though he didn't know what to say to it. "Thank you. It's not much though, I mean there are way smarter people around!"
"Hey," Harley elbowed him. "Don't sell yourself short, Darlin', you're pretty awesome."
Peter looked down at the table, fidgeting with one of his pens. Tony's voice had him looking up again.
"I want to offer you an internship. This right here," Tony gestured to the paper he was still holding, "Is impressive, and I want to know what else you can do."
"I– I don't know what to say. It would be amazing, Mr. Stark, truly, but…"
"Harley's already told me about the time you spend here. If you accept, you would have flexible hours so that you could come in on the days you don't have any clubs or anything at school or you could come in the evenings or mornings."
Peter started at Tony for a few moments, thoughts running through his head. "Why me? You don't even really know me. You could have someone so much smarter and you're asking me."
"Because these papers show your potential. I also know that these equations right here aren't high school level, even for STEM. I wanna have you in my labs and I want to see what you can really do." Tony spoke passionately, his eyes light at the prospect of being able to teach and watch what Peter would be able to achieve.
"What'dya say, Mr Parker? Do you accept?"
Peter wasn't sure what did it, whether it was the practically unbelievable chance to intern under Tony Stark, the encouragement from said man, or the desire to be challenged in his education for once. He wasn't sure but looking back, he thanked it for the rest of his life.
"I accept."
Dog Bucket List: 45 Fun Things to Do With Your Dog to Make Him Happy
Tumblr media
It’s not for nothing that our furry friends are often referred to as human’s best friend. They’re incredibly loyal, caring and earnest, and their love is unconditional like no other. Thus, it’s only fair we also treat our doggies like they’re our best friends; it’s a spot they’ve rightfully earned, after all. And that means there’s so much more we could be doing together with our dogs to make them (and you) happy beyond the basics. That’s why I have put together this fun bucket list of things to do with your dog, so that you and your furry best friend can get into some awesome dog-friendly activities together!
1. ✧ Stay at a Pet-Friendly Hotel
There are plenty of places where your pooch is welcome to stay, just do a simple search for pet-friendly accommodations. You will find hotels and log cabins, as well as a cottages and cute glamping tents. Pick one and have a memorable getaway with your pup.
2. ✧ Learn a New Trick
Depending on how long you’ve been training him, your pup likely already knows how to play fetch and roll over. Those are just the most basic of tricks that you could teach him though. There is also the army crawl, the salute, and the handstand which can leave other owners impressed once your doggy has mastered them.
3. ✧ Dress Up for Halloween
Halloween can be a fun holiday to enjoy together with your pup. The stores are bursting with simple costumes for dogs, like different kinds of cute headbands that’ll easily transform them into a dog-dragon or the like for the night. A quick search for dog costumes on Amazon will pop up a ton of different options as your dog’s costume, such as reindeer ridden by Santa, mail carrier, ghostbuster, dinosaurs, Maleficent, and the list goes on.
And naturally, it is a must to take a million photos of you and your pup in your Halloween outfits for the world to see.
4. ✧ Walk on the Beach
With the summer season well under way, there’s no excuse not to schedule a fun day out frolicking on the sand. There are plenty of dog-friendly beaches around the US that you could visit.
5. ✧ Have a Doggy Birthday Party
You should be able to lookup your pooch’s birthday on his pedigree. But, if your dog is a rescue or doesn’t have an exact birthdate, you can pick a date that’s convenient to you, so he can check off this activity on his dog bucket list. It would be wise to send out your invitations and make the cake early so you won’t end up going crazy over last-minute arrangements.
Don’t forget to buy a cute birthday hat and you can easily bake your own doggie cake with the Wheat-Free Peanut Butter Puppy Cake Mix.
6. ✧ Take Your Dog to Work With You
While not all workplaces allow it, for security, hygiene and other reasons, surprisingly many companies these days allow for their employees to bring their dog to work with them. And why not? A furry friend in the office makes the working day so much more fun and breezy!
Your dog will also enjoy the extra time spent with you, not to mention all the attention they’ll be getting throughout the day from your colleagues who won’t be able to keep their hands off from petting your doggy.
7. ✧ Ride in a Convertible
Just like you, your pup loves to feel the wind in his hair when cruising down the highways. The usual coupe or pickup is boring and confining though, so go on a drive in a convertible instead. Accessorize with cool sunglasses (like the QUMY dog goggles) as you bask in the sun and you will feel like celebrities who have all the time in the world.
8. ✧ Go Shopping Together at a Dog-friendly Store
Shopping no longer has to be an activity that you love to do but need to leave your furry bestie home for! Although certain stores, such as supermarkets, continue to be quite inaccessible to dogs, a wider range of stores accepting dogs, outside of pet shops, are beginning to arise all over. Just check online before you get going on your epic shopping trip!
9. ✧ Stand Up Paddle Board
If you haven’t already noticed, a stand-up paddle board just happens to fit more than one person, you can easily have room for a smaller sized dog. Honestly, teaching your pet to SUP may be one of the more challenging things to do on this list, but in the end it’ll be so much fun to paddle down a scenic river or on a smooth lake.
10. ✧ Do a Police Car Ride Along
Another one for extra special dog activities–for both you and the dog–is to go on a ride along in a police car. It can’t get much more exciting than that! It’s also totally safe to do, giving you a ton of first hand insight on what it’s actually like to be a police officer for a day.
11. ✧ Play Frisbee
If your dog already knows how to fetch a stick or a ball, it can be easy to advance a level with a Frisbee. Though Fido might have some difficulty with catching a flying disc at first, this is one thing to do with your dog that will require a little patience.
You can easily find a frisbee on Amazon, but the KONG Classic Flyer is one of the best-rated across the board.
12. ✧ Sleep on the Bed
Sleeping on the bed can be such a treat for your pooch, but don’t give into the temptation too much or they won’t sleep in their own dog bed! Some dogs will even chew up their beds so that they can spend more time on your bed—a very smart trick. Everybody knows that having your pooch lie in your bed with you is one of the best feelings in the world for you (and him), but once they start snoring, it might be time to kick them out of the bedroom!
13. ✧ Watch the Puppy Bowl
As tempting as it might be to switch the channel to watch your favorite American football teams going at each other, Super Bowl Sunday is the best time for you to binge-watch the Puppy Bowl with your pooch. Not only will you see puppies, but also other cute animal “tweeters” and “commentators”. You never know, you might find that squealing at fluffy furballs is a more enjoyable annual thing to do than screaming at sweaty athletes.
14. ✧ Have Breakfast in Bed
Is it your pup’s birthday? Or perhaps just a rainy and gloomy morning where you could both use a little pick me up? Having breakfast in bed together, all the while cuddling and maybe catching something comforting on the TV, sounds like a great way to treat yourself – and your pupper!
If you’re skilled with your hands and in the kitchen, try to whip up a breakfast that looks like you’re both having the same thing, but will be totally safe for your furry friend to eat. Some ideas for a dog friendly breakfast are cauliflower muffin bites, pancake puffs or these mini omelettes. Perhaps you’d like to enjoy the same treats for your breakfast – or at least the human version of them?
15. ✧ Take a Nap Together
Although a simple activity, apart from a good and long walk around the neighborhood, this is what you and your pup will love to do together the most! If possible, why not make it a regular thing even? It’s such an excellent way for both of you to recharge your batteries mid-day. So cuddle up and get to snoozing!
16. ✧ Visit a Nursing Home
There’s no denying the fact that playing with dogs can be therapeutic, especially to those who live in nursing homes. This is because friendly canines can encourage residents to leave the confines of their room and to recover faster from surgery or a stroke. Watching the older generation having fun with your pet is always worth the effort of driving to your nearest care home and it will be such a rewarding thing to do for everyone.
17. ✧ Eat a Gourmet Meal
I have eaten many incredible meals at memorable restaurants in my lifetime, but finding a restaurant that serves gourmet meals for dogs can be a challenge. Sometimes, it would be better off to prepare the food yourself, which should be fairly easy to do. There are several delicious dog friendly recipes on the web that can be easy to make, like peanut butter cookies, gourmet whole wheat dog biscuits and chicken jerky.
18. ✧ Have a Steak Dinner
If breakfast in bed sounds like it could get messy or complicated really quick, you can’t go wrong with a steak dinner. And since your dog actually can eat the same dish as you this time around—though they may prefer it on the raw side—it’s an especially fun ‘date night’ between you and your best friend.
