D.H.Lawrence
Playwright, Poet, Author, Journalist (1885–1930)
D.H. Lawrence is best known for his infamous novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover,' which was banned in the United States until 1959. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.
Born in England in 1885, D.H. Lawrence is regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He published many novels and poetry volumes during his lifetime, including Sons and Lovers and Women in Love, but is best known for his infamous Lady Chatterley's Lover. The graphic and highly sexual novel was published in Italy in 1928, but was banned in the United States until 1959, and in England until 1960. Garnering fame for his novels and short stories early on in his career, Lawrence later received acclaim for his personal letters, in which he detailed a range of emotions, from exhilaration to depression to prophetic brooding. He died in France in 1930.
Early Life
Author D.H. Lawrence, regarded today as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, was born David Herbert Lawrence on September 11, 1885, in the small mining town of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England. His father, Arthur John Lawrence, was a coal miner, and his mother, Lydia Lawrence, worked in the lace-making industry to supplement the family income. Lawrence's mother was from a middle-class family that had fallen into financial ruin, but not before she had become well-educated and a great lover of literature. She instilled in young D.H. a love of books and a strong desire to rise above his blue-collar beginnings.
Lawrence's hardscrabble, working-class upbringing made a strong impression on him, and he later wrote extensively about the experience of growing up in a poor mining town. "Whatever I forget," he later said, "I shall not forget the Haggs, a tiny red brick farm on the edge of the wood, where I got my first incentive to write."
As a child, Lawrence often struggled to fit in with other boys. He was physically frail and frequently susceptible to illness, a condition exacerbated by the dirty air of a town surrounded by coal pits. He was poor at sports and, unlike nearly every other boy in town, had no desire to follow in his father's footsteps and become a miner. However, he was an excellent student, and in 1897, at the age of 12, he became the first boy in Eastwood's history to win a scholarship to Nottingham High School. But at Nottingham, Lawrence once again struggled to make friends. He often fell ill and grew depressed and lethargic in his studies, graduating in 1901 having made little academic impression. Reflecting back on his childhood, Lawrence said, "If I think of my childhood it is always as if there was a sort of inner darkness, like the gloss of coal in which we moved and had our being."
In the summer of 1901, Lawrence took a job as a factory clerk for a Nottingham surgical appliances manufacturer called Haywoods. However, that autumn, his older brother William suddenly fell ill and died, and in his grief, Lawrence also came down with a bad case of pneumonia. After recovering, he began working as a student teacher at the British School in Eastwood, where he met a young woman named Jessie Chambers, who became his close friend and intellectual companion. At her encouragement, he began writing poetry and also started drafting his first novel, which would eventually become The White Peacock.
'The White Peacock' & 'The Trespasser'
In the fall of 1906, Lawrence left Eastwood to attend the University College of Nottingham to obtain his teacher's certificate. While there, he won a short-story competition for "An Enjoyable Christmas: A Prelude," which was published in the Nottingham Guardian in 1907. In order to enter multiple stories in the competition, he entered "An Enjoyable Christmas: A Prelude" under Jessie Chambers's name, and although it was published as such, people soon discovered that Lawrence was its true author.
In 1908, having received his teaching certificate, Lawrence took a teaching post at an elementary school in the London suburb of Croydon. He also continued to write, and in 1909 he received his big break when Jessie Chambers managed to get some of his poems published in the English Review. The publishers at the English Review took a great interest in Lawrence's work, recommending his draft of The White Peacock to another publisher, William Heinemann, who printed it in 1911. Set in his childhood hometown of Eastwood, the novel foreshadowed many of the themes that would pervade his later work, such as mismatched marriages and class divides.
A year later, Lawrence published his second novel, The Trespasser, a story based on the experiences of a fellow teacher who had an affair with a married man who then committed suicide. Around the same time, Lawrence became engaged to an old friend from college named Louie Burrows.
'Sons and Lovers'
However, in the spring of 1912, Lawrence's life changed suddenly and irrevocably when he went to visit an old Nottingham professor, Ernest Weekley, to solicit advice about his future and his writing. During his visit, Lawrence fell desperately in love with Weekley's wife, Frieda von Richthofen. Lawrence immediately resolved to break off his engagement, quit teaching, and try to make a living as a writer, and, by May of that year, he had persuaded Frieda to leave her family. The couple ran off to Germany, later traveling to Italy. While traveling with his new love, Lawrence continued to write at a furious pace. He published his first play, The Daughter-in-Law, in 1912. A year later, he published his first volume of poetry: Love Poems and Others.
Later in 1913, Lawrence published his third novel, Sons and Lovers, a highly autobiographical story of a young man and aspiring artist named Paul Morel, who struggles to transcend his upbringing in a poor mining town. The novel is widely considered Lawrence's first masterpiece, as well as one of the greatest English novels of the 20th century.
'The Rainbow' & 'Women in Love'
Lawrence and Frieda von Richtofen soon returned to England, where they married on July 13, 1914. That same year, Lawrence published a highly regarded short-story collection, The Prussian Officer, and in 1915 he published another novel, The Rainbow, which was quite sexually explicit for the time. Critics harshly condemned The Rainbow for its sexual content, and the book was soon banned for obscenity.
Feeling betrayed by his country but unable to travel abroad because of World War I, Lawrence retreated to Cornwall at the far southwestern edge of Great Britain. However, the local government considered the presence of a controversial writer and his German wife so near the coast to be a wartime security threat, and it banished him from Cornwall in 1917. Lawrence spent the next two years moving among friends' apartments. However, despite the tumult of the period, Lawrence managed to publish four volumes of poetry between 1916 and 1919: Amores (1916), Look! We Have Come Through! (1919), New Poems (1918) and Bay: A Book of Poems (1919).
In 1919, with the First World War finally ended, Lawrence once again departed England for Italy. There, he spent two highly enjoyable years traveling and writing. In 1920, he revised and published Women in Love, which he considered the second half of The Rainbow. He also edited a series of short stories that he had written during the war, which were published under the title My England and Other Stories in 1922.
Determined to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling to America, in February 1922, Lawrence left Europe and traveled east. By the end of the year—after stays in both Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) and Australia—he landed in the United States, settling in Taos, New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Lawrence completed Studies in Classic American Literature, a book of highly regarded and influential literary criticism of great American authors such as Benjamin Franklin, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville.
Over the next several years, Lawrence split his time between a ranch in New Mexico and travels to New York, Mexico and England. His works during this period includes a novel, Boy in the Bush (1924); a story collection about the American continent, St. Mawr (1925); and another novel, The Plumed Serpent (1926).
'Lady Chatterley's Lover' & Final Works
Having fallen ill with tuberculosis, Lawrence returned to Italy in 1927. There, in his last great creative burst, he wrote Lady Chatterley's Lover, his best-known and most infamous novel. Published in Italy in 1928, Lady Chatterley's Lover explores in graphic detail the sexual relationship between an aristocratic lady and a working-class man. Due to its graphic content, the book was banned in the United States until 1959, and in England until 1960, when a jury found Penguin Books not guilty of violating Britain's Obscene Publications Act and allowed the company to publish the book.
At the highly publicized British obscenity trial, the prosecuting attorney infamously asked the jurors, "Is it a book that you would have lying around the house? Is it a book you would wish your wife or servants to read?" The jury's decision to allow publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover is considered a turning point in the history of freedom of expression and the open discussion of sex in popular culture. As British poet Philip Larkin quipped in one of his poems, "Sexual intercourse began/In 1963/Between the end of the 'Chatterley' ban/And the Beatles' first LP."
Increasingly hobbled by his tuberculosis, Lawrence wrote very little near the end of his life. His final works were a critique of Western religion titled Apocalypse and Last Poems, both of which were published in 1930.
Death and Legacy
D.H. Lawrence died in Vence, France, on March 2, 1930, at the age of 44.
Reviled as a crude and pornographic writer for much of the latter part of his life, Lawrence is now widely considered—alongside James Joyce and Virginia Woolf—as one of the great modernist English-language writers. His linguistic precision, mastery of a wide range of subject matters and genres, psychological complexity and exploration of female sexuality distinguish him as one of the most refined and revolutionary English writers of the early 20th century.
Lawrence himself considered his writings an attempt to challenge and expose what he saw as the constrictive and oppressive cultural norms of modern Western culture. He once said, "If there weren't so many lies in the world . . . I wouldn't write at all."

Artist impression of a proposed new East Croydon station. Originally planned to be a block of apartments I'm assuming what was the Royal Mail sorting office might become part of the (busiest) Station (in the uk after the Central ldn stations). . The space between platforms 1 and 2 and @boxparkcroydon , Ruskin Sq and the Vita apartment block has been earmarked for extra platforms for years and these have been included in the new design to meet passenger demand. . The full plans for the redevelopment will be published tomorrow on the network rail website. This is interesting to me as I started all this photography back in 2008 because of this station. I could remember the construction of the current mechano station but not the previous victorian one. Shoebox Britain: how shrinking homes are affecting our health and happiness
Jenny had run out of choices when she first walked into her basement studio flat last spring. The charity worker had been kicked out of her shared home in Bristol when her landlord sold it. She was on benefits, having been signed off sick with post-traumatic stress and anxiety after giving evidence as a victim of crime.
While being put up on a friend’s sofa, Jenny, who is 35 but does not want to use her real name for fear of jeopardising her tenancy, scoured online sites for rooms within her budget. Housing benefit claimants in the city can generally receive up to £300 a month for shared accommodation. “Rooms here were going for anywhere from £400, but even if I had that money, I could be rejected because I’m on benefits,” Jenny says.
Desperate and confined to private rented accommodation (Bristol has more than 11,000 families on the waiting list for social housing), Jenny learned that she just about qualified for the higher allowance for a one-bedroom flat, as a single occupant aged 35 or over. This pushed her budget above £500 a month. After finding her landlord on a Facebook community group, Jenny had a home. The payoff would be space. “What I didn’t know is how isolated and trapped it would make me feel,” she says.
Jenny pays £475 a month, excluding bills, for one of the smallest of nine flats carved out of a Victorian terraced house on a busy road. One of them is not more than a glorified shed crammed into the garden. She doesn’t know the floor area, but planning documents show that her room, which includes a double bed, kitchen sink, hob, oven, washing machine and a clothes rail, covers 15 sq metres. The tiny, windowless bathroom adds 3 sq m. Her whole home is barely bigger than the average living room and would fit 14 times on to a tennis court.
“When I come home I feel this sense of doom,” Jenny says. “I can’t have the window open because I’m on a noisy, polluted road, and I can’t have the blinds open because there’s a bus stop right there. I’ve had people weeing on my doorstep, doing crack outside my front door.” There are practical challenges. Jenny eats on her bed, which, like her clothes and everything else she owns, smells of whatever she cooks. Without proper storage, anything out of place can make the flat feel chaotic. The hum of the fridge keeps her awake at night.
“I think that even if someone didn’t suffer from anxiety or depression, living in this flat would affect them mentally,” she says, wondering how she might start to recover in a house like this. “You feel it – oh my God, the air is so … heavy.”

Britain’s housing crisis is pushing more of us into shoebox homes. Houses are shrinking, too. In 2014, the average new-build in the UK was 76 sq m, the smallest in Europe (Danish homes were almost double the size, research by the University of Cambridge showed). The average living room in a house built in the 1970s, meanwhile, was 25 sq m, compared to 17 today, according to LABC Warranty, which provides warranties for new-builds.
But it is the slicing and dicing of houses – and, increasingly, office buildings – that is redefining the whole idea of home, recalling a dark era of tenements and rookeries. For some residents, it is a money-saving endurance test of the sort many of us consider a rite of passage. For others, it can feel like the walls are closing in and there is no way out. “I’m lucky I have a roof over my head but that’s about as far as it goes,” Jenny says.
There have been attempts for more than a century to promote space standards for homes. In 1912, Raymond Unwin, the architect and planner best known for the garden city movement, wrote: Nothing Gained by Overcrowding!, a pamphlet on the subject. In the same year, the Local Government Board recommended that no house should be smaller than 79.4 sq m. Flats appeared in space guidelines in a 1961 report of the Parker Morris committee. One-person, single-storey flats should be at least 29.7 sq m, it said, with 2.6 sq m of storage – double the size of Jenny’s home.
But standards and ideals can get blurred in a vicious economic cycle. Ministers relax planning rules to enable more building and development. Developers and landlords find profitable loopholes in those changes. Local authorities, desperate for alternatives to their own dwindling housing stock, direct residents to those landlords, fuelling further exploitation at a time when councils also lack resources for planning and building control. Residents, often faced with homelessness, endure the cramped results, until society notices and someone writes another report.
“My concern is that people are becoming inured to something that they shouldn’t have to put up with,” says Julia Park, the head of housing research at architectural firm Levitt Bernstein. She has written a history of space standards and is surprised by how little we consider the effects of domestic confinement. “When you’re living in smaller and smaller flats, you reach a point where it makes sense to take out the walls because one big room feels nicer, but I think that implies a lot of compromise we’re not examining,” she says. “Some of these flats pose threats to physical health, but, in small spaces, it’s going to be mental health that is most affected.”
Elsewhere in Bristol, Chris, 24, shares a tiny flat with his girlfriend Merlie. The couple have a separate bedroom, but there is barely space to move between the bed and walls. The kitchen and living area is equally small, and there is no chance of spending any time apart when they are both at home. Chris also suffers from anxiety, while Merlie has an eating disorder.
“When I’m feeling stressed and anxious in the outside world, it’s important for me to have a base where I feel comfortable,” says Chris, who has just quit a job handling complaints for a train company. “If I come home to an uncomfortable sofa that has stuff on it so I have to walk around it, and navigate wires everywhere, it makes me more irritable and it’s harder to decompress.” Kitchen clutter can affect Merlie’s eating disorder, because order creates a space where eating feels right for her. “She can end up avoiding eating or not eating at all for hours because, if it doesn’t feel right, there will be a reaction,” Chris says.

Park, who advises local authorities, laments the way sleeping, cooking and washing are increasingly viewed as the only functions of a dwelling in a housing market where a living room is becoming a luxury. She is especially worried about the types of homes that have emerged in the gaps in policy. This summer, she noticed a seven-floor former office block in Croydon, in south London that had been divided into flats. Planning records showed that each of the six upper floors in the building had been converted into 10 studios, including single flats of just 13 sq m.
By current standards, these flats are barely a third of the recommended size. Park was instrumental in drawing up the “nationally described space standard”, a nationwide metric implemented by the government in 2015. It recommends 37 sq m for a one-person, one-bedroom flat; a two-person, one-bedroom flat should be 50 sq m.
Park was surprised that the government had agreed to the recommendations, given its austerity policies. “The compromise was that it is optional,” she adds, estimating that fewer than half of councils have adopted it. Even when they do, it only applies to new buildings or developments that go through the planning system, but not to a range of “permitted developments”. So, for a relatively small investment, the owner of an office building, for example, can convert it into self-contained flats with only “prior notification”.
Ben Clifford led a team that visited more than 500 converted office buildings for a report published last May by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. “We were shocked by how many of these flats were of a very poor quality,” says Clifford, a senior lecturer in spatial planning and government at University College London’s Bartlett school of planning. In one, Clifford called the fire brigade after spotting walls dividing flats made only of plywood. “We spoke to one resident who was in a tiny one-bed flat with two children and no balconies or open space,” he says. “Another woman, in an 80s office building, said it just wasn’t very nice to live in a flat with big tinted windows that don’t open.”
In the so-called “lockdown” model, meanwhile, rogue landlords are converting family homes into tiny studio flats specifically to attract tenants aged 35 or over who, like Jenny, claim the higher housing allowance for a self-contained dwelling. By including a token shared facility, such as a tiny kitchen – or by ignoring rules altogether – these landlords also bypass planning permission by treating such developments as flat-shares (another permitted development). The rental income from six cheaply built studios is multiples of that for a three-bed flat share in the same house – and it is the taxpayer who lines the landlord’s pockets. “It’s basically the warehousing of homelessness,” says Jon Knowles, a computer analyst and campaigner who has recorded hundreds of such developments.
Park accepts that homes smaller than 37 sq m can be a useful, short-term base for people in need, as part of the response to the housing crisis; and high-quality “micro” apartments are increasingly marketed as aspirational. Park’s own son, Jack, this summer moved into a flat about the same size as Jenny’s. But, in his case, downsizing was a choice. The primary school teacher, who is 28, was paying £600 a month for a small room in a flat-share in south-east London. He wanted to work less as a supply teacher to free up time for his art and a possible masters degree and now pays £350 for a 13-15 sq m studio in Liverpool. His metal sink has a draining board that incorporates two electric hobs. There is no oven.
“I’m not that fussy about where I live and if I wanted to work a bit less and save money, it was only possible in a place like this,” Jack says. “But if it was forced on me, I might resent all sorts of things about it.” He says he could not tolerate the space if he had a partner.
Chris, who pays £625 a month for his flat in an old house, says enforced proximity makes arguments tough. “If you’re feeling distant from one another it’s blown out of proportion hugely because you’re in the same room because you have to be,” he says. A social life is challenging, too; the couple have a small blow-up mattress for guests, but the only bathroom is accessed through the bedroom, around the bed. Hosting dinners is out of the question.
For Jenny, this also fuels a sense of isolation. “I can’t even have someone for a cup of tea,” she says. “When people do come over I feel shame because of how small it is, and everything feels dirty because as soon as people come in they are instantly in my bedroom with their shoes.”
Few housing campaigners have much hope that conditions might soon improve for the occupants of our shrinking homes. Clifford says there is a minor backlash against abuses of the permitted development rules, and several local authorities are moving against them. “We have to be much tougher on landlords and on standards,” Park says. “There are going to be compromises because we are desperately short of housing, but we cannot give people a free pass.”
For Jenny, the future – near and far – feels uncertain. “I know I’ll never be able to afford to buy anywhere, or even to rent this place without help with benefits at the moment,” she says. “But I don’t want to be on benefits.” She has started doing volunteer work with a learning disabilities charity while she considers applying for jobs. She goes to the library and takes regular walks. “Or I’ll go to a friend’s place and instantly, when I’m out of the house or in a larger space, I’ll feel a hundred times better,” she adds. “But then I’ll have to go home.”

Wealthy Chinese investors are going to make Britain's housing crisis even worse
Predictions that a new wave of investment from mainland China is on the horizon will stir further debate over the measures British politicians might use to protect local home buyers. Advertisement
The anticipated influx of money from mainland China into the UK is set to affect not only London – historically the focus for much east Asian investment – but cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, to which more of the investment is now heading.
“Those seem to be the hotspots,” says Neil Jensen, the Hong Kong-based regional director for London estate agent Fraser & Co, who promotes developments in the capital to Asian investors.
A particular spotlight has been shining on Manchester since last October, when Chinese president Xi Jinping toured the city to lend his support to George Osborne’s “northern powerhouse” project during his first state visit to Britain.
Jensen says Fraser & Co, founded in 1995, has traditionally specialised in London properties which it markets internationally through offices in Dubai and Hong Kong. Now, however, he is preparing to offer his clients their first major investment opportunity outside the capital, in a project specifically designed to attract Chinese money.
Called “New Chinatown” – or Xinhua Bu (New China Wharf) in Mandarin – the £200m venture in Liverpool describes itself as “one of the most important and exciting developments in the UK today” and promises to be “one of the UK’s most luxurious and desirable residential destinations”.
You can’t just put up a block of flats in Liverpool and expect people to buy it – there has to be a story Neil Jensen
Wealthy Chinese investors are going to make Britain’s housing crisis even worse
The development’s website boasts: “It is the burgeoning energy and dynamism of modern China transplanted into the heart of an historic World Heritage City.” Adding: “This is an historic moment … This is a unique investment opportunity.
“Underpinning the whole masterplan is the idea and motif of the awakening dragon – a powerful symbol of China’s resurgence and status as a new global power.”
Jensen says improving transport infrastructure in the northwest and relatively low prices meant New Chinatown – where two-bedroom duplex penthouses are on offer for up to £546,427 and ordinary one-bedroom flats from £119,211 – would be a hit with Chinese investors.
“You can’t just put up a block of flats in Liverpool and expect people to buy it … If you want foreign buyers there has to be a story,” he says, adding: “They’ll probably go quite quickly.”
The fringes of London have also come onto the radar of Chinese investors, thanks to Crossrail, a £14.8bn, 73-mile metrolink cutting west to east across the capital, which is set to open in 2018.
“Most of your investors 20 or 30 years ago would have been going more towards the bullseye in dartboard terms,” Jensen says, referring to the centre of London. But improved transport links are now drawing foreign investors to places such as Slough, Ilford and Canning Town.
“The commuter area – anything within a 20-30 minute travel time [of central London] is hot,” says Jonathan Gordon, a director at IP Global, a Hong Kong property investment firm that is promoting projects in Ilford and Croydon and has previously invested in Slough. Mercury House, Slough Facebook Twitter Pinterest Mercury House, a new development in Slough being marketed in Hong Kong. Illustration: Fraser & Co
“Slough has got Crossrail going through it so you can get to Bond Street in no time,” he says. “It is those sorts of stories we are interested in as opposed to buying in Bond Street itself.” Advertisement
Crossrail is not the only reason foreign investors are now looking to the outskirts of the capital, though. Investors and industry insiders say stamp duty increases targeting wealthy foreign investors have pushed up the cost of buying more expensive properties in prime locations.
That has led many foreign investors to buy a larger number of cheaper properties in more peripheral, suburban areas, says Gordon, where “transaction costs are lower.”
One veteran Hong Kong investor, with a portfolio that includes properties in London, Manchester and Liverpool, explains: “You buy many properties, but lower-priced ones … You pay something like £200,000 or £250,000, rather than £1m for zone one in Mayfair, places like that.”
This new wave of Chinese investors includes people such as Jody Ye, a 30-year-old from Chongqing, a metropolis in south-west China. In July, Ye paid £200,000 for a flat in Bristol, where she went to university and now lives. She is planning to buy her second UK property.
“Buying property back home is too expensive,” she says. “Investing in the UK is much more cost-efficient.” Bristol is not only “a great place”, but, she adds: “British people think Bristol is posh.” The Hong Kong headquarters of Juwai.com Facebook Twitter Pinterest The Hong Kong headquarters of Juwai.com
Fan Feifei, 34, from Xi’an, is another Chinese buy-to-let investor. She is preparing to purchase her third property in Birmingham. “I bought it purely for investment,” she says of her second purchase, a £135,000 home in B29, which she rents to overseas students.
“Since 2014, Chinese people have been rushing to buy houses in the UK,” adds Fan, pointing to high rental yields and stable property prices as key driving factors. “All the Chinese people around me are buying houses or have already bought several houses in the UK. I’m the one who has bought the least, with only two.”
Song Dongzhe, a third mainland investor, from the north-eastern city of Dalian, bought his first British property – a three-bedroomed house in Selly Oak, south-west Birmingham – in 2012 for £125,000. Earlier this year he bought two more.
Song says the UK is “very attractive to Chinese property investors”, largely because it does not have the high duties that have been introduced in Canada and Australia targeting foreign buyers. Advertisement
High prices in London make it “too risky” to buy there, he adds. But “as the UK’s second biggest city, I thought Birmingham was a choice that made sense”.
A fourth mainland investor, who declines to be named, says President Xi’s tour of the UK convinced him Britain was the right place to invest his family’s fortune. Property in major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen is now too expensive, the Shanghai investor says, and China’s stock market is “extremely unstable – so I think it’s a good time to invest in [the] UK.”
As well as London, he says he is now looking at opportunities in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Great Plumbing Melbourne Advice You Need to Heed
If you have any plumbing Melbourne problems, you need to know when to call a plumber. You can get lucky with an easy fix. Knowing about plumbing will make it easier and quicker to fix issues that arise. This article will help you to learn some basics about plumbing.
What to do if your plumbing Melbourne pipes are frozen
To prevent pipes in your house from freezing, avoid allowing the temperature in the house to dip below freezing and any pipes exposed to the cold should be insulated. Of course, if it is below freezing outdoors, the pipes will be subjected to the same temperatures. The best-case scenario will be to heat the pipes and the water will start flowing again. The worst thing to happen would be for the pipes to burst. You would then be stuck with costly repairs and a very messy cleanup procedure.
If you have a pipe that freezes, you should turn on the faucet that is closest to the frozen pipe. This way, the water has a place to run. This will relieve the pressure inside the pipe and should stop it from bursting which would prevent further damage to your home.
Before attempting any plumbing Melbourne project, make sure you can do the job
Use manuals and online sites to get informed before attempting to doing a DIY plumbing Melbourne project. Plan each project so that you don’t make time-consuming mistakes. If unsure it always pays to call plumber Melbourne.
Do not put grease, fat, and other oils down your drain as this will damage your plumbing Melbourne system.
Oils tend to harden and clog up your drain. This usually occurs if you have a garbage disposal, as the fat will cause the blades to run slower and less efficiently. Make certain you dispose of all oils in a bin and not down the sink.
To keep things flowing smoothly through the drain of your bathtub and shower, each month you should feed it baking soda (one cup’s worth) with a cup of vinegar to chase it. Plug the drain when complete or cover it with a cloth as the two chemicals are going to react with each other. Allow some time to pass, and then pour down boiling hot water. This process usually opens the pipes by clearing out hair build-up and soap scum.
How to unblock a toilet if your plumbing Melbourne drains are blocked.
If your toilet happens to be blocked and you do not have a plunger you can try the following method. Pour a bucket of hot water down the toilet but be sure to pour it from a height that is waist level or above, so you do not flood the bathroom. If the water falls to a lower level again then you should repeat the procedure.
If you have problems with your plumbing Melbourne it is advisable to call a professional plumber Melbourne to sort out the problem. A plumber Melbourne will have all the necessary tools and equipment to do the job quickly and correctly. He will generally have a good range of spare parts and thus be able to rectify the problem without you having to search for a plumbing supplier.
Should you have any problems with your gas line do not attempt to fix it yourself. You must immediately get into contact with a gas plumber who will determine if it is an emergency and advise you what to do until he gets there.
