I’ve been reading some craft books and online posts about the world building because my story is an urban fantasy set in present day US, in a fictional town, and theres not a secondary world where the fantasy happens, it’s all in the real world, except the magic is a secret that only certain people know about, but all of the resources I find about world building only talk about fantastical worlds that exist by themselves and not the kind of more subtle world building that I’d have to do. Do you have any tips?
Guide: Creating a Fictional Town in the Real World
Step 1 - Choose Your Location - There are two ways to go about choosing a location for your fictional town. One is to go the "Springfield U.S.A." route, ala The Simpsons, and be vague about the specific location (borough, parish, district, county, region, state, or province) and instead give a broader geographic region... "the East Coast," "the Pacific Northwest," "Central Canada," Northern Scotland," etc. The other option is to go ahead and put your fictional town in a specific location. Just figure out where (for example, somewhere outside of Des Moines, Iowa) and go to Google Maps, click on satellite view, then start zooming in on big empty areas. Choose a place big enough to fit a town. Yes, in reality it's probably farm fields, pasture, or someone's property, but that doesn't matter. You don't have to actually show it on a map. It's just a plausible spot to build your town. Now you can measure how far it is to other places, you know what highways to take to get to it. You can even do street view to get the lay of the land, see what the landscape looks like and try to envision the buildings there. You can also use what's there to create parks, popular recreational areas, and anything else your town needs.
Step 2 - Choose Your Inspiration - Even when you're creating a fictional town, it's still a good idea to use a real town (or two, or three) from that general area as inspiration for your town. For a fictional town in Des Moines, I would zoom in on the map to find a nearby town of similar size... like Elkhart, then I can take a look around to see what it's like. Just looking at the map, I can see they have a couple of churches, a couple baseball fields, a very small main street/downtown area with a couple shops and restaurants, a post office, a few different neighborhoods, and a cemetery. This would be a great model for a small fictional town outside of Des Moines. And, as I said, you could look at a couple other sand combine them. Once you have your inspiration town/s, you can walk around on Google Maps street view, go to the town's web site, watch a tour on YouTube (if one exists), or look up pictures in Google Image search.
Step 3 - Start Planning - This is the really fun part! First, you might want to draw a basic map of your fictional town using your inspiration town/s as a guide. This doesn't have to be a pretty map... just a basic line drawing to help you envision where everything is. Think about some of the basic things this town might have, like the ones I listed in step two, and any other things you might want your town to have, like maybe a library, a hospital, a city hall, school, and maybe a movie theater. It might even be helpful and fun to put together a collage of pictures to represent your town so you've got something in mind as you write about it. You can even choose representatives for specific locations in your story, like your MC's house, school, and their favorite hangout.
Step 4 - Naming Your Town - Start by looking at the kinds of town names that surround your town. Look for common naming conventions... suffixes like -ton, -ville, -dale, -burg, -wood, -field, etc. Words in a particular language, like a lot of French-inspired town names, or towns with geographical terms (lake, hill, valley, river, canyon, gap, etc.) My guide to Naming Locations has additional tips.
Step 5 - Populate Your Town and Give it a History - Last but not least, make up a little history for your town, again, using surrounding towns as inspiration. Who founded it? When was it founded? What's the town's main industry? What are the people like in this town? What jobs do they have? What do they do for fun?

Born a Grease thoughts that absolutely no one is asking for, but I can’t fit in the story and wanted to share with the class anyway because she passed 100k this week! (They grow up so fast 🥲).
— Darry hated looking in the mirror after he got jumped. He wasn’t vain before or anything, but he’d always thought he looked decent enough. But now he couldn’t see past all the ways he was changed: the scar across his temple where Paul hit him with the gun, the scar across his brow where they cut him with a switchblade, the way his nose was now crooked from the punch Mark threw. And that didn’t even touch the scars that littered the rest of his body. They were reminders, every last one of them, of how that night changed him, how different he was now, how dumb he’d been forever believing he could be anything other than some kid from the East Side.
— Darry had nightmares every night after he was jumped and his few nights in jail only made them worse. Soda never found out, but somehow Pony did. He tried to help Darry in whatever way he could, but Darry could be stubborn at the best of times, and this was certainly not the best of times. So all Pony could do was stand to the side and watch as his brother fell apart, and pray he’d let him help before it was too late.
— For a long time, Two-Bit was the only one who knew that Darry went to his parents’ grave every week; sometimes he’d even go out and join him. He knew that Darry needed someone alive to listen to what was going on in his life, and he also knew that those moments at his parents' grave were sacred for the older boy; Darry could admit things at Rose Hill Cemetery that he couldn’t anywhere else. Darry would kill him if he ever told his brothers, so Two-Bit kept everything he said at their graveside close to his chest and hoped that somewhere along the way Darry could finally find peace.
— Darry couldn’t be around alcohol after he got jumped, he couldn’t handle the smell, and certainly not the taste. Because it wasn’t just him who’d been drinking that night, but some of the boys that jumped him had been as well. He could smell it on their breath, hear it in the slur of their words. Whenever he caught a whiff, he was transported straight back to that night in the woods as switchblades danced across his body and he was pinned down with nowhere to go. He hid it well at first, but somehow Steve found out. He paid attention like that. One of those quiet types who listened to more than you’d think. He never touched a drop again, at least not when Darry was around. And somehow managed to keep him away when the others went for a drink, or kept Two-Bit sober whenever he stopped by the Curtis household. Darry didn’t know how he did it, and he certainly never thanked him, that wasn’t how either boy worked. But he always made sure there was a fresh cake in the fridge that he knew Steve loved, and a blanket on the couch for when his old man kicked him out.

Ghost and Southern California
i'm from California, so a lot of the locations in the Ghost lore are familiar to me! i wanna use this post to show / explain Ghost being set in the Los Angeles area.
though it hadn't been explicitly stated yet then, there are actually hints that Ghost is based in Southern California as early as Chapter 4: The Accident. when Sister Imperator is driving, you can see palm trees on the hills along the road. of course, lots of places have palm trees, but the specific combination of palm trees with the rocky cliffs and sparse vegetation feels distinctly Californian to me.
Tumblr media
the Dance Macabre music video shows Nihil met Sister Imperator at a mansion in LA (as explained by the intro). don't know the exact location, but if i had to guess, i'd place it maybe somewhere in Beverly Hills, which has a lot of mansions like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the Kiss The Go-Goat music video again confirms that they're in Los Angeles. it features the Whisky a Go Go, a real music venue in West Hollywood. the Mary On A Cross animated music video accurately places it on a corner along the Sunset Strip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the Mary On A Cross lyric video shows Sister Imperator walking through the Ministry building before leaving to see the show at the Whisky a Go Go. this is another indicator the Ministry building is in the LA area since it's within driving distance of the venue. scenes in the Ministry building are filmed at a real mausoleum northeast of LA, but i'm not going to name the location because the Ministry is supposed to be a fictional building. interestingly, the lyric video also gives us the exact time of the concert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after the events of Kiss The Go-Goat, the Mary On A Cross animated music video starts with Sister Imperator driving to her house, which is in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood near the Hollywood Sign. you can see from the road that they're in the hills looking over the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then Sister Imperator and Papa Nihil run from their house to the Hollywood Sign. there are hiking trails that go from the surrounding neighborhoods up to the Hollywood Sign. you can go behind it just like they do in the video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister Imperator and Papa Nihil cross a body of water that is most likely the Hollywood Reservoir, although the video places the Hollywood Sign west of the lake instead of east, as in real life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister Imperator and Papa Nihil make out in a cemetery (which i did not attempt to locate) and then end up at a motel. this is not a real motel, though. it's the Bates Motel movie set at Universal Studios Hollywood. i laughed so hard because recognized it instantly in Rite Here Rite now. (i've been on the same tour that the Nameless Ghouls were on.) Universal Studios Hollywood is both a theme park and an actual film studio. there are people filming when Nihil calls Mr. Psaltarian to come pick him up in the The Future Is A Foreign Land music video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so to summarize some of the locations in those videos: the Whisky a Go Go, Hollywood Sign, and Universal Studios are highlighted in yellow. the red outline on the map shows the boundary of the Hollywood Hills neighborhood. the Hollywood Reservoir is the body of water in the middle of it.
Tumblr media
The Future Is A Foreign Land music video and Chapter 13: The Beach Life feature Mr. Psaltarian's beach house, which is on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. though there are beach houses all along the SoCal coast, Malibu is closest to LA, and is pretty much the only place where houses are that close to the water without some kind of barrier. it's a real house and i've driven past it. i know the exact location but i'm not sharing it, for obvious reasons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here is Malibu on a map relative to Los Angeles:
Tumblr media
as a side note, it appears Cardi now drives Mr. Psaltarian's old car, a 1968 Buick LeSabre convertible. it has California license plates, of course, but the plates must have been replaced at some point, since that California license plate design wasn't in use until 1988.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lastly, Rite Here Rite Now is set at The Forum (now called KIA Forum), which is in Inglewood near the LAX airport. Inglewood is technically its own city, but it's completely surrounded by LA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when Rite Here Rite Now released, TF said in an interview that it's "common knowledge" that Ghost is based in LA. i found it a bit funny because i've read very few Ghost fanfics that are actually set in LA, so i don't know how 'common' that knowledge really is, LOL. but i hope this post helps!
WHAT WAS BEHIND THE DECISION TO SHOOT THE FILM AT THE FORUM IN L.A.? TOBIAS FORGE: [...] There’s this common knowledge that the HQ of the band seems to be in L.A. So the Forum is not only a classic venue, but it’s sort of their home turf. Had we placed the story someplace else, we would’ve had to justify: Why are they there? Why is this show special? Revolver (June 2024)

here is a little introduction to the original fantasy world i came up with for the eflorr trilogy.
series masterlist | pinterest board | playlist | masterlist
Tumblr media
Welcome to the world of Tyhmalaa. Our stories take place on the continent of Aton where the two major kingdoms (Eflorr and Obelón) have had a feud spanning decades.
here is a little list of facts to give you a sense of what kind of realm this is:
currency: platinum, gold, silver and copper
monsters: yes
magic: no
calendar: the year is just divided by the four seasons (each with 90 days in them) with 7 days in a week (Moonsday, Tidesday, Windsday, Thundersday, Fogsday, Stormsday and Solarsday) and the year shift is on the longest night of the year on the 30th day of winter
year the first story begins: 856 PR (post-rimesunder, an ancient white dragon that once froze the entire continent of Efira for 2 centuries till he was slain)
climate: the weather in Aton goes through all four of the standard seasons (sping, summer, autumn and winter), though most of the stories take place on the northern side of the continent, so it is on the colder side.
religions: there are multiple gods people worship (some notable ones are: Apa – goddess of wilderness and the sea, Kotris – goddess of knowledge, Cicero – god of war and peace, Zondür – god of atonement and love, Sona – goddess of life and death)
kingdoms on the continent: Eflorr (capital: BorĂźn) and ObelĂłn (capital: Ingorn)
Tumblr media
maps and doodles:
it took me around 30 hours of work to draw all of these, but it was super meditative.
Tumblr media
map of the continent of Aton.
⊠ squares = capitals
⊗ circles = smaller towns
△ triangles = speciality locations
the continent of Efira is located to the north east of Aton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fort BorĂźn. The ivy-covered stone castle on the top of the cliff is home of the royal family of Eflorr.
Elm Square. The beating heart of BorĂźn, it is not only a central meeting place for all, but also the district where the majority of the city's shops, taverns, etc are. The town square gets especially sparkly during the seasonal festivals with booths are stalls crowding the market.
Willow Grove Cemetery. As the name would suggest, a large weeping willow tree grounds this cemetery that it is built around. Although Eflorr as a whole commonly isn't very religious, this graveyard does house a few alters and shrines to various deities.
The Valerian Ward. You'll find all manner of schools, museums, as well as BorĂźn's beautiful aquarium in this part of town.
The Port of BorĂźn. The city's docks are always bustling with excitement and possibilities.
The Western Farms. Up on the hill that swiftly blossoms into The Noll Woods, are a plethora of rolling fields and cosy cottages.
The Beach. Down the little steps on the northern side of the docks is not the only way to access this cove. Though the steep path some way further north is no secret, not everyone is privileged to the knowledge that the castle's cellar opens up into a cave system that leads out onto the beach. Created as a safety measure and a last resort for the royals to escape, the tunnels most commonly got used by the young royals as a daring playground.
The Tulip Neighbourhood. The homes in this part of town have generous courtyards that bring the households together.
The Dandelion Quarter. Part residential, this neighbourhood also houses a grand park (The Riverview Public Park), where combat courses/training are held every weekend, as well as The Water Lily Orphanage.
The Snowdrop Sector. For those not inclined for the bustle of the city's centre but still want to live close enough to the action often settle down in a little cottage out in this district. Many also chose to retire out here, living out the rest of their days in a cabin by the sea.
Tumblr media
The Barracks. Through the main gate lies a grand courtyard to welcome you to the castle. The surrounding buildings are designated mainly for the wardens. There are living quarters for them, training areas, armoury, small stables that also house the royal horses, as well as the city's small garrison.
The Western Wing. In here lies many of the more public spaces: throne room, ballroom, banquet hall, servants quarters, the kitchen, war room, the meeting room that's utilised mostly for gatherings with the town council.
The Conservatory. This secluded greenhouse was built as a memorial to King Edward III. who apparently had quite the green thumb.
The Topiary Garden. A private courtyard separating the two main buildings is a serene space where one can come sit on a small bench and listen to the trickling water of the fountain in the centre.
The Eastern Wing. This part of the castle is home to the royal's private chambers as well as numerous other spaces such as the library.
The castle also has a basement that's not only utilised for storage (both of common items as well as the most precious that's kept safe in the grand vault) it also connects to a tunnel system that leads all the way out onto the beach.

(Previous post for context)
I might have found some kind of ceremonial mound. I found a record of one other burial mound in this county and I found it and it's still standing - yay! It's right on the county border. But what the hell is across the road from it?? It's a mound-looking structure with tiers and an elongated flat top. On a farm. But I thought it couldn't be a mound because it's sitting right out in the open. Then I thought, "Ohhh, stupid me, it must be a reclaimed landfill! Duh!" But I did the research and there has never been a landfill there. Huh?? My dad said maybe it was a filled-in strip mine, but I was like, "Way ahead of you! Here's a map of every closed mine in Ohio - it's not there. There's never been a mine there, either."
It doesn't look like anything but a hill from the road, so maybe it's just big enough that people never really saw it. The back part with the lower level isn't visible from the road.
Tumblr media
Reasons why this COULD possibly be an ancient mound:
Tumblr media
There is a known mound right across the road, and several other smaller mounds and a native cemetery site (no mound) within 1-2 miles to the south across the county line.
It's next to a creek that later Native Americans used as a main travel route.
It's next to one of the main ancient trails in the county (the road now follows it.)
There's a cemetery next to it. No idea why, but SO many settlers and early towns built cemeteries next to or on top of burial mounds. Not always, but so often it's one of the first things I look for if I spot a potential mound.
The flat area on top of the mound is aligned exactly east-west. Ceremonial mounds were often aligned to the solstices or to important stars like Polaris. (The county line is slightly tilted. The mound is accurate, E-W.)
Other ceremonial mounds kinda look like reclaimed landfills. Here's Monks Mound in Illinois:
Tumblr media
The oldest topo map I can find shows it there in 1944. The oldest aerial photo shows it in 1958. Being farmed. Btw, modern landfill regulations didn't happen until 1959. They mostly just burned or buried shit and called it a day.
So there's ample reason to investigate more. I just want to know WHAT it is.
And in related news, I'm now talking to the county Historical Society because I want to work with them and start a county "Prehistoric Preservation Society" because I am definitely already finding mounds. Most are small and I've found at least a dozen throughout the county that I'm certain are mounds and 50 or so more that look very likely. But this one and several other sites with big ones are the ones I want to focus on first because they'll be most likely to garner scientific interest.

“Breaking into a cemetery”? Sam, dish the tea, please! (And not into Boston Harbour, either). What sort of sightseeing exigency required burglarizing the marble orchard? And how did you evade the gendarmes? This sounds a bit “Leverage”. (Or something a young Steve Rogers might pull.)
Looking back, I'm gonna say like 70% was me being young and stupid and 30% was probably ADHD-fueled impulsivity.
Copp's Hill Burial Ground sits on the flat top of Copp's Hill, with walls all the way around and entrances on opposite sides. The other two sides have houses butted up against the cemetery on one, and a tall wall with a long drop down to the street on the other. Signs posted outside of it say that it opens at sunrise and closes at dusk.
When I got there, which was early but well after sunrise, the main entrance was still locked. I walked around, looking for another one, and on the opposing side (the Charter Street entrance) the gate was also locked, but the wall is very low and so is the fencing. If you look at it on Google Streetview you can see that for a reasonably athletic person it would be fairly easy to get up on the wall and vault the fence.
I thought, well, it's supposed to be open, so probably I won't get into trouble if I climb in. Ah, youth.
So I did, and I had a very nice time; I didn't disturb or vandalize anything, obviously, I just walked around and looked for the gravestones I'd wanted to find (Prince Hall, the Mathers, etc). I still have photos I took that day:
Tumblr media
[ID: A scanned film-camera photo of a cemetery, looking east towards the water, the sun barely touching the tops of the trees; the gravestones are laid out in irregular lines, cut through with brick-paved paths.]
Anyway, I spent a lovely hour or so amongst the stones, and then I happened to look up as a large SUV drove past the west entrance. It slowed down and I felt like it was...looking at me, very clearly visible as the only person in the cemetery. So I started strolling back towards the east entrance. Sure enough, not long after, a police car pulled up to the west entrance, lights going, and I took off running.
I cleared the fence pretty much in a single leap and darted down Charter Street, ducking into an alley where I pulled my coat off and stuffed it in my messenger bag, figuring that would make me harder to identify. The messenger bag converted to a backpack so I did that as well, pulling out the straps and shouldering it. I then strolled Incredibly Casually down the next cross-street to the Old North Church, which was open, and ducked inside just as the cop car rolled past again. I settled down in one of the high-walled pews for about half an hour, just to be safe, and I didn't hear the sirens come past again. It's quite a pretty little church anyway and I had a book, so it wasn't a hardship.
Should I have broken into the cemetery? While it was laughably easy and I had good intentions, probably not. But nobody was harmed, so while it's not a good example to set it's still a fun story to tell, especially in person (I do hand gestures).

(( Let’s be clear: to offer it, you have to have it and not be sharing it. So they KNOW where Hamas’s leadership is, maybe where the hostages are - including American hostages - and are WITHHOLDING IT. ))
▪️US TO SHIP WEAPONS.. but prohibit their use in Rafah, as a possible ‘solution’ after the massive pressure in response.  (( So they want Israel to attack Rafah with inaccurate weapons?  Ok, can accommodate. ))
▪️MEMORIAL DAY REQUEST.. Ministry of Defense: Due to the expectation of a particularly high number of participants in the Memorial Day ceremonies for the fallen of the IDF in the cemeteries, the Ministry of Defense calls on the general public to give priority to the members of the bereaved families, the soldiers of the IDF and the security forces. Thinking about Cryptid Ghost Riders
Dives + truck stops know best, if a guy comes in during unsocial hours exhausted, looking like hell, smelling like a campfire; you best behave for your servers and your fellow man, lest you get dragged out back and shown why you should've.
The Cypress Hills Cemetery gets a lot of ghost stories over the years. But press the locals long enough and they'll talk about all those horrible tragedies, the spirits that can't move on, and the spirit that trys to help.
East LA gets careful. The gangs catch on quickly that there is No Where To Hide. You either leave, or accept the risk; La Leyenda could find you on any street, at any time, and after that? Sometimes living is a punishment too. The people looked to the law and got few answers, so they looked to a white leather line instead.

memorial - for the random word generator prompt!
The world before me slowly unravels with each footstep I take upon lands I have yet to explore; with each path I take, I am filled with wonder and try to document each tale I am regaled with. There are grandiose stories of heroism carved into history, made by mortal beings, that one may find in tomes and scrolls in every part of the world.
During spring, as the flowers awaken from their hibernation and journey to warmer climes, I have made an unexpected friend in what others call a beastkin. I felt their gentle nature, the benign spirit that radiated from them, and welcomed them into my company in my search for more stories to document.
We crossed into Eastern Thalanan, an area I did not frequent without the company of Mister Fitzgerald, however, I knew well of the cemetery there, though my companion sparked the interest of a cloaked gentleman, who hurriedly approached me and immediately became interested in her.
Tumblr media
He told me a story, not one of mortal men and their great feats, but of a solitary gobbue, one whose voyage took them afar, as the world felt like it was becoming undone. For years it wandered, and though its life was being extinguished with each step, life gathered upon it. My companion listened quietly as the brooding man continued to weave its remarkable, tragic tale. I became interested in seeing this living memorial upon its back, to paint it into memory and share it with my clan upon my return.
With his brief directions, we both set towards the east where we may find it and give it our offerings. Even though we could not communicate verbally, they knew the silent language of gestures and guided me toward our destination to offer our respects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this field of flowers, we see the monumental form as we descended a hill and quietly approached the area where it forever laid dormant. Within me something stirred, despite being accustomed to death, the sight of the gobbue caused my heart to tighten in my chest as I felt sparks of life radiating from its hunched back in the form of lavenders, roselles, and moss which cushioned the blooms and carpeted the hunched mound.
Life and death are inseperable.
My companion gingerly pushed the thorned vines away from the maw left agape on the deceased, allowing us to see past the veil of greenery. Its limbs have long become part of the earth, rooting itself to help keep it upright, its empty eyes still looked forward, as one could imagine it had been doing for years on end, leaving the land of Coerthas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With her assistance, I was lifted higher, and closer so I may properly glance upon them with respect; was there that I would quietly observe the details of its passing and the beauty which shrouded it.
In silence, I offered it a prayer, for one could only fathom its hardships and understand the loss it felt as its world crumbled at its feet.
Its spirit is long gone, for not even I can feel its presence lingering in this plane, despite such, I will honor where he finally rests, a living shrine that he has created upon its back, in hopes that where his spirit lies, it feels lighter in knowing that another has come to learn of their plight.

@katblu42 wrote: “I know practically nothing about Texas, other than it is big, and in the South of the USA. It seems to be portrayed as having fairly warm weather . . . but as large as it is, does it have regions of varying weather patterns? And in a similar vein, are there various areas of diverse vegetation/fauna?”
••••••
In short, yes. I live in West Texas and mom in Southeast (about 500 or so miles apart), and we can have essentially two seasons. It can rain there and be bone dry here, and sometimes in the winter she asks me the temp so she can prepare the next day.
And it’s no exaggeration some parts of the state you can experience at least 3 seasons in the same day. I’m personally lucky in that I seem to have adapted to this particularly go here, which it’s frequent 2 seasons a day right now, but I get funny looks being in short sleeves in cooler weather because of it.
•••••••
Vegetation/fauna is definitely diverse. If I travel from home to Mom’s, in that 8 hour drive I go from:
• a flat area where most trees that aren’t mesquite were planted by settlers (you can tell where a house is/was based on clusters of trees), that grows cotton and feed if they aren’t an oil town
• area with mesas and wind turbines after leaving the Caprock, another ironically heavier oil area. The turbines are increasing to the point I joke they’re “Don Quixote’s nightmare.
• areas with thicker areas of trees that are shorter, oddly at times more prickly pear cactus, and bigger cities,
(This varies if I take the longer route - uncommon but I will in December to run a different St. Jude race - through Boerne/San Antonio where you go through the mesas and rolling plains again in the middle of the state, and unfortunately experience 40 mins. of cell phone dead zone. It’s bad to the point it’s LEGAL to go 80 mph to get through it)
• heavily wooded area and gentle hills.
And then if we go to Galveston or Corpus Christi there’s some marshy areas and then the coast.
The marshiest area is around La Porte I think, which is where the battle of San Jacinto was and the Texas fighters used this to an advantage.
••••••
Wildlife varies. I see more wild turkey and pheasant here than east coast. I’ve seen a few roadrunners but they seem more prevalent in the Palo Duro Canyon.
Prairie dogs are far more common in west Texas. Amarillo’s minor league team’s mascot is Sodpoodles (a nickname) and Lubbock has one park dedicated to the black tail prairie dogs.
Anyone watching them I’d say don’t walk close: their town system underground makes it dangerous to walk lest you fall through a hole.
I definitely see more deer near moms along with raccoons. Skunks more often here: in the summer I must walk the cemetery in full daylight, not dusk as they seem to like living there more. (Just clarifying for folks: where I am the cemetery is the safest place to walk due to bad traffic and has a very high visibility).
Snakes are definitely a big issue all around. For the poisonous ones, West Texas more rattlers and coral while East copperheads and water moccasins (though up here we’ll see some copperheads).
Coast we see a lot of sea turtles nest there, particularly Kemp Ridley. There’s a lot of hatching ceremonies in the year where the state protects the turtles until they waddle into the Gulf to give them a fighting chance to survive.
I’m sure there’s even more than this, but it’s more of I’ve experienced here
Thanks for the ask.

"Faerie Tale Theatre" Posthumous Reunion: The Stars' Final Resting Places
Some people might think I'm obsessed with death. A minor hobby of mine is to research celebrities' final resting places, via the website Find a Grave and the YouTube channel Hollywood Graveyard. And I like perusing themed guides to famous graves. For example, Hollywood Graveyard's videos themed to Christmas, Halloween, the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz, cast and crew members of The Twilight Zone, etc., or Find A Grave's "Posthumous Reunion" pages for famous movie and TV show casts, sports teams, etc.
I decided to create a similar guide for the cast of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Sadly, all too many stars of that cult classic series are no longer with us. Here's a guide (with links to Find a Grave pages) to the various places where those stars are buried, in case anyone here might like to visit a few someday.

This is how, while darkness  drew my profile with its little finger
I have learned to see past as Montale saw it,  The obscure thoughts of God descending
among a child's drum beats,  over you, over me, over the lemon trees.

I.  The rain falls lighter now and I gaze   At the dark descended onto our town.  From this mountain shelter I saw  The old mango tree struck down  By fierce lightning from the east,  Thunder rumbling in the heart  Of the guardian of the land, who thrills  To the meeting of the drought’s last sigh   With rush of rain brought by the northerlies   This ninth month of my return to my language.  II.  I will go home to my people, bringing fruits From hills I had planted to marvelous trees  I had met in my travels in other lands  On this revolving earth: fragrant pears,   Their fresh flushed cheeks, bright lemons,  Yellow and thirst-quenching in hot season.  I will go across the town’s old cemetery  Where my ancestors sleep in edgeless night.   I will not wake them in their supreme repose,  I am transient like them, simply passing through.   III.  I trust that beside the well which had been dug  By my elders, a storm lamp had been placed,   Lighting up the path toward home, the lamp-  Lighter minding the first law of neighborliness:   To help one another as best as one can in daily  acts of living, for if the lamp were put out, unlit,   Someone passing by might stumble or slide,   Fall into the neighborhood well and die.   When I pass by the well I will draw water and drink,  Give thanks to my unseen neighbor for the light.  Translation from Balak sa Binisayà  By the author

Kiwi have truly made the hills of Wellington home and there’s a growing chance you might just stumble upon signs of one as they spread out. Sixty-three kiwi have been released into the vast hill country south-west of Wellington city, around Mākara, since November last year as part of the Capital Kiwi Project. The project’s founder and self-confessed “bird nerd”, Paul Ward, said the “rewilding” had seen kiwi moving further out from where they were originally released. “Kiwi have come home to the hills and, as expected, they are starting to disperse.” He said they had been monitoring male kiwi to understand nesting habits and how the population, and hopefully the next generation of kiwi, was settling in. Of the 15 kiwi being monitored, most had “stayed put” around where they had been released near Terawhiti Station. “A couple of them have gone adventuring further afield ... One of those birds was located not far from the skyline track behind Karori about a week or two ago.” It was exciting that people heading out for a night ride or a walk along the skyline had the prospect of seeing footprints and hearing kiwi, he said. With birds now likely to be in areas closer to people, the local community also needed to take responsibility to help ensure their safety. “It’s about laying out the welcome mat for them on their return,” Ward said. Of particular concern was people out with their dogs, with those out in the western reserves – Mākara Peak mountain bike park, Karori and Mākara Cemeteries, and The Skyline track – asked to keep them on a lead. “The vision really is based on people and looking after this taonga species. Wellingtonians have shown they are incredibly up for that to date and this is the next step, managing our dogs responsibly.”
Yes, YES! Go forth, my fluffy, flightless friends! Today Karori, tomorrow the world! Well, Karori a bit further east, maybe.

On November 8th 1891 the author Neil M Gunn was born.
Neil Miller Gunn, was born in Dunbeath, a small fishing and crofting community in Caithness, North East Scotland. Although he was educated in Galloway, he grew up with a love of the Highlands and Highland culture and, as an adult, he returned to the North East to live and work.Gunn, the son of a fisherman, was born at a time when the herring fishing industries of Scotland were beginning to die out, and much of Highland culture was in decline, with a falling population and growing unemployment.
Gunn saw that Highland culture was also under threat as the old ways were forgotten, and fewer people spoke Gaelic or Scots, so traditional songs and stories were beginning to disappear. Reflecting this trend, Gunn himself spoke only English, although in his writing he used the rhythms and syntax of Gaelic speech to give a sense of the people and communities he depicted.
For a number of years, Gunn worked in London for the Civil Service before joining the Customs and Excise in 1911. Returning to the Highlands he worked as an Excise Officer until 1937, when increasing financial success allowed him to become a full-time writer. This writing also extended to journalism and, in the 1930s and early 40s, he wrote articles for publications such as the Scots Magazine. In this he argued that the Highland way of life was worth preserving and should be supported to stop it disappearing altogether, a position which he also expressed politically through his involvement with the SNP.
Gunn is best known, however, for his novels, the first of which, The Grey Coast was published in 1926. His early novels reveal a bleak, often harsh, portrait of the communities he knew so well, although through time his fiction shifted to reveal a more hopeful vision of Highland experience. These more positive portraits include Highland River , The Silver Darlings and Young Art and Old Hector , novels which remain his most widely-read work.In 1956 he published his final book, The Atom of Delight, a spiritual autobiography which traced his interest in Zen Buddhism.
Neil M Gunn died on January 15th 1973 at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness and is buried beside his wife, Jessie Dallas Frew at Mitchell Hill Cemetery Dingwall.
Dunbeath Heritage Centre in Caithness houses a permanent exhibition of his life and work. His book, Whisky and Scotland is still a popular read among Whisky aficionados, although I have read some comments saying it needs updated, well unless he somehow rises from the dead I’m afraid it will not happen. The statue in the pic, called Kenn with Salmon, after his novel, was unveiled in 1991 at Dunbeath. He is also remembered at on Lawnmarket Royal Mile Edinburgh with the quote “Knowledge is high in the head, but the salmon of wisdom swims deep”
