Genuinely fascinated by the price of Facebook/Instagram ad free: $120 a year.

Is that how much they were getting from selling my data?

That cannot be how much it costs to operate.

Web hosting isn't dirt cheap anymore especially with the amount of scripts running vs just delivering a jpg. I get 5gb and a ton of bandwidth for $60 and most users won't use more than 500mb in images, videos and database info on facebook or insta.

You pay developpers, designers, you pay folks to optimise it as the data gets more complicated, and of course mods if you're running anything social but Facebook uses sweatshop labour for that.

I think they must have come up with $10 a month based on 5 coffees or just assumed $10 is pocket change. It's hilariously ill informed to think the average citizen has an extra $120 a year for Facebook/Instagram/Threads or that meta shouldn't be *grateful* for *your* patronage in these times after all, they're not going to be worth much if they're empty.

I'd be paying to keep seeing your posts not just to have a diary. People throw around the terms content creator and content consumer but your little posts are worth actual money. We're not freeloading mosquitos on tumblr's back, we're what makes tumblr worth scrolling.

Tumblr's ask made sense, they're not publicly owned, they're not making a huge profit and I get a lot from this place as a host for my stuff but from the userbase (and blocking options).

Meta's ask is laughable, they need us more than we need them. There was a time where Mum was 'locked in' in that her peers were all staying in contact there but they've spread across the web: they're not just on pinterest and wordpress but on reddit goodreads letterboxd etc...

If Disney+ doesn't have the storage, that means they're deleting the files period and these shows will officially be lost media, never to be seen again. Which is bullshit because a large part of Disney's appeal as a streaming service is their massive back catalog since they own literally between 35-40% of all television and movies ever made.

If Disney+ doesn't have the bandwidth, what the hell are they selling? They want people subscribing and using the service, which means they're going to get the same bandwidth bill whether the customers are streaming Star Wars or Marvel or Pixar or Mikey Mouse Club or some old Don Knotts movie.

So either Disney is so broke they can't afford to pay their bills anymore, in which case the shareholders should demand an immediate audit to find out where all the money went, or the executives are straight up fucking lying in order to rip off the writers, directors, cast, and crew from the residuals they earned.

Bob Iger announced that Disney is going to absorb Hulu, and Hulu will no longer exist next year. All shows will move to the Disney+ app.

Disney also announced they were going to remove shows and movies periodically from their streaming services.

I believe both of these moves are because of the Writers Strike.

Disney knows its going to lose the strike. There is too much public support. Specifically, the WGA is going to win writers getting more residuals from streaming.

So if Disney takes shows off of streaming, they dont have to pay the writers the residuals.

They are going to use excuses like "not enough funding for the server capacity" or "not enough views to warrent keeping the show". These are BULLSHIT. Its all greed. Its only GREED.

Servers cost money, IT folks and developers cost money, memory costs a loooot of money, bandwidth costs money, and on the scale at which YouTube operates in order to serve you and billions of other people 4K 60fps video the instant you click a link, all over the world? The ELECTRICITY to keep the servers powered on is a significant amount of money. This money has to come from somewhere.

The traditional structure under which the tech industry has operated for a long time has been venture capital. You have a great idea for an app but no funding? YouTube is at stage 3 and has been for a while now. Google would like for them to be a profitable stage 4. Unfortunately for Google, there is so much precious data on YouTube now that even they could not escape sunsetting it with their reputation intact, so they only have one path out of 3.

The pandemic changed the Internet a LOT. Far more education, socialization, entertainment, etc. occurs there now than pre-2020. Stockholders are expecting dividends that reflect this. My guess would be that this has led Google to see how far they can push YouTube toward a #4 and if it will actually be profitable before they break the userbase, alongside their broader push to nullify adblock in Chrome (USE FFX for the love of all that's pure and holy)

I'm not really sure what else to say here. This is the sort of thing that would take mass action and probably a fundamental shift in how Western capitalism operates to reverse at this point. YouTube are not going to give up without a fight, and if they do, a lot of people risk the loss of livelihoods, important resources, and precious memories. You can play around with the algorithm and see if you can get it to treat you better by closing the app or tab immediately any time you are served an ad. But don't expect that to be a long term solution.

This is depressing, but it's not just that one guy in some office got greedy. It's a keeping the lights on thing. Venture capital has tightened its fists so we're going to see more of this enshittification capitalism soon unless we deliberately put the brakes on it at the government regulations level.
