You pay developpers, designers, you pay folks to optimise it as the data gets more complicated, and of course mods if you're running anything social but Facebook uses sweatshop labour for that.

I think they must have come up with $10 a month based on 5 coffees or just assumed $10 is pocket change. It's hilariously ill informed to think the average citizen has an extra $120 a year for Facebook/Instagram/Threads or that meta shouldn't be *grateful* for *your* patronage in these times after all, they're not going to be worth much if they're empty.

Disney also announced they were going to remove shows and movies periodically from their streaming services.

I believe both of these moves are because of the Writers Strike.

Disney knows its going to lose the strike. There is too much public support. Specifically, the WGA is going to win writers getting more residuals from streaming.

So if Disney takes shows off of streaming, they dont have to pay the writers the residuals.

They are going to use excuses like "not enough funding for the server capacity" or "not enough views to warrent keeping the show". These are BULLSHIT. Its all greed. Its only GREED.

The narrative here is a bit more complex than you're giving it credit for. What I'm about to say is not meant to defend or accuse anyone here, just to set the record straight. Ads annoy the shit out of me too, but there's a reason we've started seeing so many of them.

First of all: The Internet is not free. I'm sorry, but it's not. Hosting video on the Internet in particular is extremely not free. Servers cost money, IT folks and developers cost money, memory costs a loooot of money, bandwidth costs money, and on the scale at which YouTube operates in order to serve you and billions of other people 4K 60fps video the instant you click a link, all over the world? The ELECTRICITY to keep the servers powered on is a significant amount of money. This money has to come from somewhere.

The traditional structure under which the tech industry has operated for a long time has been venture capital. You have a great idea for an app but no funding? You go talk to some guy in Palo Alto who is richer than God and makes his money make more money by loaning it to folks whose ideas he thinks will be profitable long-term. He gives you the money you need to get your app big enough to get noticed; the app is bought by a larger company on the assumption it will be able to help them profit (or, very rarely, taken to an IPO); and the money earned in this sale or IPO is used to pay the venture capital guy back with interest and (sometimes) make you rich enough to join him.

This is what happened with YouTube. Like a surprising number of early social media sites, they started as a more complex take on a dating site, but quickly pivoted direction when they realized there was a much larger market on the 2005 internet that would respond to "we will host your videos for free." (see paragraph 2. For those who don't remember the 2005 internet - being able to download 30 second clips of 240p video meant you were living pretty high on the hog. Anything longer that wasn't a torrent was probably a Flash animation - recreated by your computer using a set of assets and instructions and a specialized plugin that ran in your browser, rather than downloaded frame by frame and assembled into video.) Google bought them in 2008 and - here's the thing - has run the division at a loss since then.

So - While the vast majority of tech startups have a sale to a larger company as an end goal, there is that small percentage that make an IPO and start publicly trading on the stock exchange instead. These are your Googles and your Facebooks, the companies which will be buying the smaller startups that are looking to sell. The folks who run these companies largely grew up in the 80s and 90s when Walmart and other big box stores were marching across the US swallowing every independent competitor, and their business model borrows a lot from Walmart:

- Find a market you think will be profitable (for Walmart this is a geographical location; for a tech company it's a new - or newly acquired - service)

- Deliberately operate at a loss in this market until you have driven the competition out of business or created a barrier to entry so high that no competition would be stupid enough to challenge you. (For Walmart, this meant offering a far wider range of product than the local general store or five and dime, as well as hardware, furniture, entertainment, etc. at rock bottom "rollback" prices until all of those stores in the area closed. For this tech example, it's hosting video - and so much of it, at such high quality - that the idea of looking anywhere other than YouTube for independently made, free to watch, long form content is basically a punchline. Where are you gonna go - Vimeo?)

- Then and only then, start extracting the actual price for the product from the consumer. (For Walmart this meant jacking up prices, lowering the production quality of the house brands, and ceasing to offer some products which didn't sell well even if they were the only retailer in the area that still sold them. For tech companies it means subscription models and - more importantly, since people who are used to getting something for free won't be happy to start paying for it - nightmarish amounts of ads and paid content, and ever-tightening restrictions on getting around them.)

- Turn a profit or back out of the venture (by closing the store or sunsetting the service).

YouTube is at stage 3 and has been for a while now. Google would like for them to be a profitable stage 4. Unfortunately for Google, there is so much precious data on YouTube now that even they could not escape sunsetting it with their reputation intact, so they only have one path out of 3.

The pandemic changed the Internet a LOT. Far more education, socialization, entertainment, etc. occurs there now than pre-2020. Stockholders are expecting dividends that reflect this. My guess would be that this has led Google to see how far they can push YouTube toward a #4 and if it will actually be profitable before they break the userbase, alongside their broader push to nullify adblock in Chrome (USE FFX for the love of all that's pure and holy)

I'm not really sure what else to say here. This is the sort of thing that would take mass action and probably a fundamental shift in how Western capitalism operates to reverse at this point. YouTube are not going to give up without a fight, and if they do, a lot of people risk the loss of livelihoods, important resources, and precious memories. You can play around with the algorithm and see if you can get it to treat you better by closing the app or tab immediately any time you are served an ad. But don't expect that to be a long term solution.

This is depressing, but it's not just that one guy in some office got greedy. It's a keeping the lights on thing. Venture capital has tightened its fists so we're going to see more of this enshittification capitalism soon unless we deliberately put the brakes on it at the government regulations level. My latest obsession has been Small Internet. The idea is to return technology to a more user-centric experience.

The problem, as Small Internet users seem to see it, is that the World Wide Web has been hijacked by corporations for whom users are products, with manipulative design, invasive ads, and abysmal privacy. Moreover, as the Internet has evolved, it has grown to require more and more skill to create a functional website, until the best and most responsive websites require skilled experts. On the user side of things, design is less tailored for a user’s comfort or use, and the users tend to have less control over how they present themselves to the world. Users with disabilities, such as the blind, are also often sidelined.

The result: a less human place that revolves around money, shine, flash, clout, speed, cults of personality, intense emotional response, and base manipulation.

How do you solve this?

By being useless, of course! Make a system difficult to be abused by a titan. Fracture it. Remove options. Become purposely obtuse. Become simple to use to an almost sinful degree. Get ugly. Do more with less. Hell, one bunch has challenged themselves to design the cleanest website with the smallest bandwidth.

Popping back and forth between the Small and modern Internets has been an enormous eye opener. For example, when you hit a website on Neocities, you can’t help but see the person behind it—it reflects their tastes, desires, hobbies, personality, and so on. Every single website is as unique as the person behind it; every design choice a delightful surprise.

But go to their Twitter page, and the standardization reduces their humanity. All you can see of them is an icon, a header, and the text they have produced; and because the design has pinched them into a tiny part of the website, they have been overshadowed. They have become part of the machine. This is about TWITTER, not about THEM. I feel like I could write a thesis about how this standardization might even impact groupthink, thus adding fire to Twitter’s performative morality and mob justice.

Small Internet’s other extreme is to remove almost EVERYTHING from a site—I’m using “site” here as a catchall, as depending on where you are, it’s not technically correct to call it this—and basically go early Telnet. You’re a text file on the Internet. ASCII art might be the only art. No styles, and even “hyperlinks” (possibly not a correct term in this case) can seem alien.

You might (correctly) note that this removes all personality completely; how is the standardization of a text file different from Twitter? And I say it’s because it has no brand: it’s a tool. It is not in service of any philosophy or human being. It sells nothing. It stands alone. It can’t show you ads, it can’t track you, it can’t earn anyone a dime, and it’s ugly as sin. Also notable: once you jump the learning curve, anyone can do it. It is completely utilitarian. There are few ways to dress it up or down—and some of the ways to dress it up are completely dependent on you as the viewer (a novel experience!). It becomes all about WHAT is said, not HOW it is displayed.

Icing on the cake: Small Internet tends to be kind to people with disabilities. If it’s just text, their screen readers won’t go to hell trying to communicate with them.

Small Internet is also a philosophy. For example, using antiquated styles and code. Purposely creating websites that are designed to earn low rankings from search engines, thereby almost guaranteeing their complete anonymity. Of course, you don’t have to go this far; you might reduce how much you profit monster companies by downloading ad blockers or using nonprofit, privacy-oriented browsers like Firefox. (I’d also say two accidental holdouts of Small Internet philosophy are Reddit and Tumblr.)

If you’d like to explore the Small Internet for yourself, I have some wonderful options you can look into. If you want to leave the WWW entirely, you can jump onto Gopher, an ancient form of Internet that’s still alive and well. You could use Mastodon.social, a decentralized social media network. You could create a website at Neocities.org, where websites are often purposely archaic or odd. You could use the search engine Marginalia (search.marginalia.nu), which purposely seeks noncommercial websites, and favors clunky ones over their smooth and modern counterparts.

My next pursuit is going to be retrocomputing. I’d also like to see how much I can scrub myself from the Internet in general. The way the Internet spiders through everyday life, this is practically impossible—and, socially speaking, undesirable—but maybe I can cause a little trouble on the way.
