On this date in the world of Classic rock and r&b music…
March 22nd
2004 - Elvis Presley
A new book claimed that Elvis Presley's ancestors came from a small village called Lonmay in the North East of Scotland. Author Allan Morrison said he'd found evidence that Elvis's great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was married in the village 300 years ago.
2001 - Earl T. Beal
American singer Earl T. Beal with The Silhouettes died. The doo wop/R&B groups single 'Get A Job' was a No.1 hit on the Billboard R&B singles chart and pop singles chart in 1958. The doo-wop revival group Sha Na Na derived their name from the song's lyrics. 'Get A Job' is included in the soundtracks of the film American Graffiti, Trading Places and Stand By Me. The Silhouettes performed in the 1986 movie Joey.
1994 - Dan Hartman
American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer Dan Hartman died aged 43 of a brain tumor in Westport, Connecticut. He was a member of the Edgar Winter Group and wrote the band's hit ‘Free Ride.’ As a solo artists he had the 1978 No.1 dance hit ‘Instant Replay,’ and wrote ‘Relight My Fire’ a UK No.1 for Take That and Lulu and also co-wrote The James Brown song 'Living in America.’ Hartman collaborated with Tina Turner, Dusty Springfield, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Tyler, Paul Young, Living In A Box, Holly Johnson and Steve Winwood.
1984 - Queen
Queen filmed the video for ‘I Want To Break Free’ at Limehouse Studio in London, England. Directed by David Mallet, it was a parody of the northern British soap opera Coronation Street with the band members dressed in drag. Guitarist Brian May later said the video ruined the band in America, and was initially banned by MTV in the US.
1980 - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart. The track, which was the group’s only US chart topper, was also a No.1 in the UK, Germany, Australia, Italy and in many other countries around the world. Pink Floyd received a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Rock Duo or Group for the song, but lost to Bob Seger's 'Against The Wind.'
1975 - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin were enjoying a six-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Physical Graffiti the group's fourth US No.1 album. On its first day of release in the US, the album shipped a million copies – no other album in the history of Atlantic records had generated so many sales. Physical Graffiti has now been certified 16 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 16 million copies.
1974 - The Eagles
The Eagles released their third studio album On the Border the first Eagles album to feature guitarist Don Felder. Three singles were released from the album: 'Already Gone', 'James Dean' and 'Best of My Love'. A hidden message carved into the run out groove of some vinyl LPs reads: "He who hesitates is lunch".
1965 - The Temptations
The Temptations released their second studio album Sing Smokey. As its name implies, it is composed entirely of songs written and produced by Smokey Robinson, and several other members of the Miracles as well. More importantly, it featured one of the well known Motown releases in its history 'My Girl'.

‘The Lion King’ Follow-Up Set With ‘Moonlight’ Director Barry Jenkins To Helm For Walt Disney Studios
The Walt Disney Studios has set Oscar winner Barry Jenkins to direct the studio’s follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster The Lion King. Jeff Nathanson, who scripted the last installment, is back in the fold and has completed an initial draft of script. Jenkins won the Oscar for scripting the Best Picture winner Moonlight and was nominated for adapting If Beale Street Could Talk (he directed both).
The film will continue with the photo-realistic technology that director Jon Favreau used in the 2019 film and 2016’s The Jungle Book. There is no release date set for The Lion King follow-up or for the production start, but it is understandably a top priority for Sean Bailey’s division after the last film grossed $1.6 billion worldwide.
They are keeping the logline under wraps, but I’m told that the story will further explore the mythology of the characters, including Mufasa’s origin story. Moving the story forward while looking back conjures memories of The Godfather: Part II, set on the African plain with a continuation of the tradition of music that was a key part of the 1994 animated classic, the 2019 film and the blockbuster Broadway stage transfer.
This is Jenkins’ second film project at Disney, as he is also planning to direct a biopic of famed choreographer Alvin Ailey for Searchlight. Jenkins has completed for Amazon a limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s National Book Award- and Pulitzer-winning The Underground Railroad, directing all the episodes and writing several of them. Jenkins has separately scripted a drama based on the first American female Olympic boxing champ, Clarissa “T-Rex” Shields, and an adaptation of Netflix documentary Virunga, about the battle to save the Congo’s mountain gorilla population.
Jenkins’ PASTEL partners Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak are expected to come aboard The Lion King follow-up as producers.
“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
Along with 2019’s The Lion King, Nathanson’s credits on the blockbuster track include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Catch Me If You Can, and Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3.
No immediate word on cast. The last installment’s voice cast included Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Alfre Woodard, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, Eric Andre, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Amy Sedaris and Chance the Rapper. Hans Zimmer, who composed the original animated film, composed music for the last film with Pharrell Williams.
Jenkins is repped by CAA, manager Jewerl Ross and attorney Jamie Feldman. Nathanson is repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson.

Green Book – a Hollywood narrative of racial ignorance disguised as social progress.
Tumblr media
The long-term relationship between Hollywood and race is once again up for discussion but, when will we see change?
It’s January 23, 2018. The nominations for America’s most prestigious awards are about to be released – it’s the Academy Awards. Whilst progress is made each year, April Reign still isn’t satisfied. ‘Until we are no longer lauding "firsts" after a 90 year history, until we can no longer count a traditionally underrepresented community's number of nominations in a particular category on our fingers, #OscarsSoWhite remains relevant. The fight continues,’ she writes to her Twitter followers.
It’s been nearly five years since the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag (2015) publicly shamed Hollywood over its failure to acknowledge black achievement. In 2019, the Oscars witnessed Mahershala Ali win best supporting actor for his role within Green Book, as well as the movie itself winning best picture. Now you may be asking yourself, “so what is the problem?”
The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag was meant to draw attention to and reward black talent within Hollywood. So, it feels like a major step backwards that Hollywood awarded its most esteemed Oscar – best picture – to a tale of ignorance.
Throughout Peter Farrelly’s latest directed film Green Book, a feel-good road-trip drama, an interracial friendship is born whilst navigating the Deep South at a time of racial divisions. On the surface, the existence of Green Book is proof of progress in an industry that remains overwhelmingly white. However, when we examine it more carefully, we can see that race problems still remain prevalent in Hollywood.
Throughout the film we’re offered misrepresentations of race and cultural ignorance, all with a side of racial stereotyping.
Green Book, set in 1962, is inspired by the true story of African American classical pianist Don Shirley, played by Mahershala Ali. Italian American bouncer Frank Vallelonga, better known as “Tony Lip”, is played by Viggo Mortensen and serves as Shirley's driver and bodyguard. The film is written by Farrelly and Vallelonga's son, Nick Vallelonga, based on interviews with his father.
The title derives from “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” published in 1938, by Victor Hugo Green. The book was a motorist’s guidebook, essential for African Americans travelling in both the north and south, informing them of eating establishments and lodgings that welcomed black travellers.
However, Green Book is a mockery. Critics have accused the film of being ‘racially tone-deaf by white-washing racism.’ Starring at the forefront of the movie is cultural ignorance and a lack of acknowledgment towards the “Green Book” of which it is named after. Highlighting it’s importance, Earl Hutchinson Sr. wrote in his memoir that ‘the Green Book was the bible of every Negro highway traveler in the 1950s and the early 1960s. You literally didn’t dare leave home without it.’ If this is the case then why is Vallelonga, a white man, the only character to interact with it? The answer: because the story of a black individual has been represented by white writers.
Green Book is a movie about racism, made by white people for white people.
As the film progresses, we see misrepresentations of the African American race and racial stereotyping. The film advances a white saviour narrative that perpetuates stereotypes. This is indicative of the film through the ridiculing character of Vallelonga. Throughout their tour of the Deep South, Vallelonga “teaches” Shirley’s character how to eat fried chicken – and yes, you read that write. Assuming Shirley’s love for fried chicken, Vallelonga is surprised to find out he has never eaten it before, continuing racial stereotyping of African Americans.
Representations of African Americans within Hollywood is important for how they are viewed in society however, ‘[a]s a marginalized group in Hollywood, Black Americans have a restricted ability to control their own self-images or to challenge disparaging stereotypes about themselves – stereotypes that shape crucial social factors such as politics, racial attitudes.’ Shirley’s character has been made into a joke.
Roles that African Americans play reinforce racist stereotypes. Hatti McDaniel played house slave ‘Mammy’ in the 1939 drama Gone with the Wind. 80 years later and actresses of colour are still playing servile roles. Octavia Spencer plays ‘Ma’ in the 2019 psychological thriller Ma. From ‘Mammy’ to ‘Ma’, little has changed.
As the movie continues, so does the list of problems. The white saviour narrative is introduced as Vallelonga “saves” Shirley from a group of white racists at a whites-only bar. Vallelonga lectures Shirley for going out without his “protection”, alluding the white character to be the hero – how typical. The New York Times has criticised the Green Book for being a ‘racial reconciliation fantasy,’ serving in the interest of the white character.
Money buys Shirley everything in the film but, fails to buy him more of a plot in his own story. Carol Shirley Kimble – one of Don Shirley’s surviving nieces – criticised how the pianist appears in the film, “[t]o depict him and take away from him and make the story about a hero of a white man for this incredibly accomplished black man is insulting, at best,” she said. How can the movie attempt to tackle racism if Shirley is pushed to the sideline of the Hollywood field?
Maryann Erigha has researched racism within modern films in her book The Hollywood Jim Crow: The Racial Politics of the Movie Industry. She writes about the power of cinema and the detrimental impact that racism and racial stereotyping in Hollywood has on its viewers. ‘Cinema is a forceful piston of an ideological engine that builds consensus around public and social issues,’ knowledge of the African American culture is essential when executing a movie as important as Green Book. However, this has failed to be achieved. Misrepresentation of the African American race only reinforces the idea that they are inferior, endorsing whiteness in Hollywood films.
Although the 2010’s has undeniably been a great decade for mainstream black media representation, ‘Hollywood’s systemic exclusion of actors of color is [still] evident in the abysmal record of nominating and awarding actors of color,’ especially the Oscars (as mentioned at the beginning).
Tumblr media
Between 1927 and 2016, actors of colour received only 6.2% of total acting nominations and won only 7.8% of total acting awards. The 2015 Oscar nominations announced not a single person of colour in any of the lead- or supporting-actor categories, catalysing the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag. However, we are starting to see some improvements.
Hollywood is aiming for racial equality and the 2019 list of nominees suggests this with a record number of films representing a diversity of cultures and ethnicities. 2019 was the first time in the history of the Oscars that three of the four acting categories have been won by non-white actors: Rami Malek (best actor for Bohemian Rhapsody), Mahershala Ali (best supporting actor for Green Book) and Regina King (best supporting actress for If Beale Street Could Talk). Even if Green Book itself has failed to successfully represent the life of Don Shirley, the Oscars have still recognised Mahershala Ali for his talent, an achievement that should not be ignored.
As we head into the roaring twenties, I hope to see change within Hollywood. Hollywood has failed people of colour, establishing a patriarchal and racist occupational culture within the entertainment industry. However, there is slow progression.
Will Hollywood learn from its mistakes or will it continue to live in the past?

B.B. King
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015), known by his stage name B.B. King, was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Rolling Stone ranked King number 6 on its 2011 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time (previously ranked number 3 in the 2003 edition of the same list). He was ranked No. 17 in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". According to Edward M. Komara, King "introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that would influence virtually every electric blues guitarist that followed." King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with Albert King and Freddie King). King was also known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.
In 1990, King was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George H.W. Bush. In 2006, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time, inspiring countless other electric blues and blues rock guitarists.
 Biography
Early life
Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation near the town of Itta Bena, Mississippi, the son of sharecroppers Albert and Nora Ella King. He considered the nearby city of Indianola, Mississippi to be his home. When Riley was 4 years old, his mother left his father for another man, so the boy was raised by his maternal grandmother, Elnora Farr, in Kilmichael, Mississippi.
While young, King sang in the gospel choir at Elkhorn Baptist Church in Kilmichael. It seems that at the age of 12 he purchased his first guitar for $15.00, although another source indicates he was given his first guitar by Bukka White, his mother's first cousin (King's grandmother and White's mother were sisters). In 1943, King left Kilmichael to work as a tractor driver and play guitar with the Famous St. John's Quartet of Inverness, Mississippi, performing at area churches and on WGRM in Greenwood, Mississippi.
In 1946, King followed Bukka White to Memphis, Tennessee. White took him in for the next ten months. However, King returned to Mississippi shortly afterward, where he decided to prepare himself better for the next visit, and returned to West Memphis, Arkansas, two years later in 1948. He performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM in West Memphis, where he began to develop an audience. King's appearances led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis and later to a ten-minute spot on the Memphis radio station WDIA. The radio spot became so popular that it was expanded and became the Sepia Swing Club.
Initially he worked at WDIA as a singer and disc jockey, gaining the nickname "Beale Street Blues Boy", which was later shortened to "Blues Boy" and finally to B.B. It was there that he first met T-Bone Walker. King said, "Once I'd heard him for the first time, I knew I'd have to have [an electric guitar] myself. 'Had' to have one, short of stealing!"
Career1949–2005
In 1949, King began recording songs under contract with Los Angeles-based RPM Records. Many of King's early recordings were produced by Sam Phillips, who later founded Sun Records. Before his RPM contract, King had debuted on Bullet Records by issuing the single "Miss Martha King" (1949), which did not chart well. "My very first recordings [in 1949] were for a company out of Nashville called Bullet, the Bullet Record Transcription company," King recalled. "I had horns that very first session. I had Phineas Newborn on piano; his father played drums, and his brother, Calvin, played guitar with me. I had Tuff Green on bass, Ben Branch on tenor sax, his brother, Thomas Branch, on trumpet, and a lady trombone player. The Newborn family were the house band at the famous Plantation Inn in West Memphis."
King assembled his own band; the B.B. King Review, under the leadership of Millard Lee. The band initially consisted of Calvin Owens and Kenneth Sands (trumpet), Lawrence Burdin (alto saxophone), George Coleman (tenor saxophone), Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone), Millard Lee (piano), George Joyner (bass) and Earl Forest and Ted Curry (drums). Onzie Horne was a trained musician elicited as an arranger to assist King with his compositions. By his own admission, King could not play chords well and always relied on improvisation.
King's recording contract was followed by tours across the United States, with performances in major theaters in cities such as Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, and St. Louis, as well as numerous gigs in small clubs and juke joints of the southern United States. During one show in Twist, Arkansas, a brawl broke out between two men and caused a fire. He evacuated along with the rest of the crowd but went back to retrieve his guitar. He said he later found out that the two men, who died in the blaze, were fighting over a woman named Lucille. He named the guitar Lucille as a reminder not to fight over women or run into any more burning buildings.
Following his first Billboard Rhythm and Blues charts number one, "3 O'Clock Blues" (February 1952), B.B. King became one of the most important names in R&B music in the 1950s, amassing an impressive list of hits including "You Know I Love You", "Woke Up This Morning", "Please Love Me", "When My Heart Beats like a Hammer", "Whole Lotta Love", "You Upset Me Baby", "Every Day I Have the Blues", "Sneakin' Around", "Ten Long Years", "Bad Luck", "Sweet Little Angel", "On My Word of Honor", and "Please Accept My Love". This led to a significant increase in his weekly earnings, from about $85 to $2,500, with appearances at major venues such as the Howard Theater in Washington and the Apollo in New York, as well as touring the entire "Chitlin' circuit". 1956 became a record-breaking year, with 342 concerts booked and three recording sessions. That same year he founded his own record label, Blues Boys Kingdom, with headquarters at Beale Street in Memphis. There, among other projects, he produced artists such as Millard Lee and Levi Seabury. In 1962, King signed to ABC-Paramount Records, which was later absorbed into MCA Records, and which itself was later absorbed into Geffen Records. In November 1964, King recorded the Live at the Regal album at the Regal Theater in Chicago, Illinois.
King gained further visibility among rock audiences as an opening act on The Rolling Stones' 1969 American Tour. He won a 1970 Grammy Award for the song "The Thrill Is Gone"; his version became a hit on both the pop and R&B charts. It also gained the number 183 spot in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
King was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2004, he was awarded the international Polar Music Prize, given to artists "in recognition of exceptional achievements in the creation and advancement of music."
From the 1980s to his death in 2015, he maintained a highly visible and active career, appearing on numerous television shows and performing 300 nights a year. In 1988, King reached a new generation of fans with the single "When Love Comes to Town", a collaborative effort between King and the Irish band U2 on their Rattle and Hum album. In December 1997, he performed in the Vatican's fifth annual Christmas concert and presented his trademark guitar "Lucille" to Pope John Paul II. In 1998, he appeared inThe Blues Brothers 2000, playing the part of the lead singer of the Louisiana Gator Boys, along with Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Koko Taylor and Bo Diddley. In 2000, he and Clapton teamed up again to record Riding With the King, which won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
2006–2015: farewell tour and later activities
In 2006, King went on a "farewell" world tour, although he remained active afterward during the last years of his life. The tour was partly supported by Northern Irish guitarist Gary Moore, with whom King had previously toured and recorded, including the song "Since I Met You Baby". It started in the United Kingdom, and continued with performances in the Montreux Jazz Festival and in Zürich at the Blues at Sunset. During his show in Montreux at the Stravinski Hall he jammed with Joe Sample, Randy Crawford, David Sanborn, Gladys Knight, Lella James, Andre Beeka, Earl Thomas, Stanley Clarke, John McLaughlin, Barbara Hendricks and George Duke.
In June 2006, King was present at a memorial of his first radio broadcast at the Three Deuces Building in Greenwood, Mississippi, where an official marker of the Mississippi Blues Trail was erected. The same month, a groundbreaking was held for a new museum, dedicated to King. in Indianola, Mississippi. The B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center opened on September 13, 2008.
In late October 2006, King recorded a concert album and video entitled B.B. King: Live at his B.B. King Blues Clubs in Nashville and Memphis. The four-night production featured his regular B.B. King Blues Band and captured his show as he performed it nightly around the world. Released in 2008, it was his first live performance recording in over a decade.
In 2007, King played at Eric Clapton's second Crossroads Guitar Festival and contributed the songs "Goin' Home", to Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino (with Ivan Neville's DumpstaPhunk) and "One Shoe Blues" to Sandra Boynton's children's album Blue Moo, accompanied by a pair of sock puppets in a music video for the song.
In the summer of 2008, King played at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, where he was given a key to the city. Also in 2008, he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame.
King performed at the Mawazine festival in Rabat, Morocco, on May 27, 2010. In June 2010, King performed at the Crossroads Guitar Festival with Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, and Eric Clapton. He also contributed to Cyndi Lauper's album Memphis Blues, which was released on June 22, 2010.
In 2011, King played at the Glastonbury Music Festival, and in the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he recorded a concert video.
On February 21, 2012, King was among the performers of "In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues", during which President Barack Obama sang part of "Sweet Home Chicago". King recorded for the debut album of rapper and producer Big K.R.I.T., who also hails from Mississippi. On July 5, 2012, King performed a concert at the Byblos International Festival in Lebanon.
On May 26, 2013, King appeared at the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
On October 3, 2014, not feeling well enough, King had to stop his live performance at the House of Blues in Chicago, Illinois. A doctor diagnosed King with dehydration and suffering from exhaustion. Hence, the eight remaining shows of his ongoing tour had to be cancelled. King didn't schedule any additional shows for the remainder of the year.
Illness and death
After the cancellation of the remaining eight shows of his 2014 tour because of health problems, King announced on October 8, 2014 he was back at home to recuperate. On May 1, 2015, after two hospitalizations caused by complications from high blood pressure and diabetes, King announced on his website that he was in hospice care at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died there on May 14 at 9:40 PM PDT.
Equipment
"When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille."
B.B. King used simple equipment. He played guitars made by various manufacturers early in his career: he played a Fender Telecaster on most of his recordings with RPM Records (USA). However, he was best known for playing variants of the Gibson ES-355. In 1980 Gibson Guitar Corporation launched the B.B. King Lucille model. In 2005 Gibson made a special run of 80 Gibson Lucilles, referred to as the "80th Birthday Lucille", the first prototype of which was given as a birthday gift to King, and which he used ever since.
King used a Lab Series L5 2x12" combo amplifier and had been using this amplifier for a long time. It was made by Norlin Industries for Gibson in the 1970s and 1980s. Other popular L5 users are Allan Holdsworth and Ty Tabor of King's X. The L5 has an onboard compressor, parametric equalization, and four inputs. King also used a Fender Twin Reverb.
He used his signature model strings "Gibson SEG-BBS B.B. King Signature Electric Guitar Strings" with gauges: 10-13-17p-32w-45w-54w and D'Andrea 351 MD SHL CX (Medium .71mm, Tortoise Shell, Celluloid) Picks.
B.B. King's Blues Club
In 1991, B.B. King's Blues Club opened on Beale Street in Memphis, and in 1994, a second club was launched at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City's Times Square opened in June 2000. Two further clubs opened at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut in January 2002 and another in Nashville in 2003. Another club opened in Orlando in 2007. A club in West Palm Beach opened in the fall of 2009 and an additional one, based in the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, opened in the winter of 2009.
Philanthropy
In 2002, King signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and instruction to children in underprivileged public schools throughout the United States. He sat on LKR's Honorary Board of Directors.
Television and other appearances
King made guest appearances in numerous popular television shows, including The Cosby Show, The Young and the Restless,General Hospital, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sesame Street, Married... with Children, Sanford and Son, and Touched by an Angel. He also had a cameo in the movies Spies Like Us and Heart and Souls. He voiced a character in the last episode of Cow and Chicken.
In 2000, the children's show Between The Lions featured a singing character named "B.B. the King Of Beasts", modeled on the real King.
A feature documentary about King narrated by Morgan Freeman and directed by Jon Brewer was released on October 15, 2012.
King appeared twice on the PBS television series Austin City Limits in 1983 and 1996.
Commercials
King, who was diabetic, appeared in several television commercials for OneTouch Ultra in the 2000s and early 2010s. He appeared in a 2014 commercial for the Toyota Camry with his guitar Lucille.
Personal life
King was married twice, to Martha Lee Denton, 1946 to 1952, and to Sue Carol Hall, 1958 to 1966. The failure of both marriages has been attributed to the heavy demands made on the marriage by King's 250 performances a year. It is reported that he has fathered 15 children and, as of 2004, had 50 grandchildren. He lived with Type II diabetes for over 20 years and was a high-profile spokesperson in the fight against the disease, appearing in advertisements for diabetes-management products along with American Idol season 9 contestant Crystal Bowersox.
King was an FAA certificated private pilot and learned to fly in 1963 at what was then Chicago Hammond Airport in Lansing, Illinois. He frequently flew to gigs but, under the advice of his insurance company and manager in 1995, King was asked to fly only with another certified pilot. As a result, he stopped flying around the age of 70.
King's favorite singer was Frank Sinatra. In his autobiography he spoke about how he was a "Sinatra nut" and how he went to bed every night listening to Sinatra's classic album In the Wee Small Hours. Sinatra had gotten King into the main clubs in Las Vegas during the 1960s, He credited Sinatra for opening doors to black entertainers who were not given the chance to play in "white-dominated" venues.

Over time, there have probably been more songs referring to news and newspapers than you might at first think. For instance, you doubtless remember STAYIN' ALIVE by The Bee Gees but you may not immediately recall that its lyric contained a reference to The New York Times!
There were also songs about magazines such as THE COVER OF THE ROLLING STONE by Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show in '72 and CENTERFOLD by The J. Geils Band in '81; going even further back, The Four Lads charted with a song in ‘59 called THE GIRL ON PAGE 44 that referred to the Sears, Roebuck & Co. mail order catalog.
However, I'm focusing in this blog on newspapers and the printed word. Rap artists such as Public Enemy (in their song  A LETTER TO THE NEW YORK POST) and hip-hop artists like T-Pain (in his composition SOUNDS BAD) have made news references, but the following is a selective list of just a few of the many rock, pop and country songs of yesteryear which fit the category.
Certain relevant lyric lines are included in italics.

Retour à New York.

Eat, Drink + Explore Memphis: A Weekend Guide to the Bluff City
Tumblr media
For as long as I remember, I’ve been visiting Memphis annually. My mom’s only sibling has lived there my entire life, and we have a large contingency of close cousins who call it home, as well. It’s simply one of my favorite places in Tennessee, so underrated, diverse in offerings and relatively chill compared to the personified chaos Nashville has devolved into. But it’s also the largest city in the state—so to ensure you don’t spend the entire time in the car, I put together this weekend guide so you can be mindful about planning your visit to Memphis.
Tumblr media
Where to Stay in Memphis
First things first: You need to book your hotel. And boy do I have a good one for you!
Tumblr media
The bulk of Memphis’ best hotels and lodging options are located in the downtown district, the oldest part of the city. On previous visits, I’ve always stayed at the iconic Peabody, but this particular trip fell just weeks after the Hotel Indigo Memphis opened just a few blocks up. Not only do I adore a good boutique hotel, but I love being one of the first guests at a brand spankin’ new property.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was my first time staying at any Hotel Indigo and from the murals that greeted us in the parking garage to the top-notch service at the check-in desk, I knew this hotel was my style.
Tumblr media
Hotel Indigo is located on the site of the first Holiday Inn in Downtown Memphis, which was built back in 1963. (Fun fact: Memphis gave birth to the global Holiday Inn brand, now a part of InterContinental Hotels Group—also the parent company to Hotel Indigo—back in 1952.) It was most recently an EconoLodge, but a $15 million renovation transformed it into this midcentury-modern dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 119 guest rooms are located on the top three floors of the 10-story building that was added to the National Register of Historic Places just last year with a Palm Springs-like pool right in the middle. Since we were visiting in winter, we didn’t get to go for a swim, but I can imagine this is a glorious place to soak up the sun in warmer months.
Tumblr media
The entire hotel is fused with musical elements, a harmonious nod to Memphis’ heritage, and the design of the lobby as well as each guest room is an MCM lover’s delight. I literally squealed with glee (just as SVV) as I took in every detail and splash of color, making mental notes to how I want to incorporate similar elements into the redesign of our new midcentury-modern home.
Tumblr media
Coming soon, the hotel will also have a restaurant, 3rd and Court, by local restaurateur Ryan Trimm whose Sweet Grass | Next Door duo in Cooper-Young is one of my favorites.
Tumblr media
Day 1: Friday
Every visit in Memphis should start at the National Civil Rights Museum to understand the city’s cultural landscape and racially-charged past. It’s been over 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel, and Memphis was forever changed by this. One of the things I really respect about the city is that they don’t try to bury the past, but rather use this as a teachable moment about black history from the days of the slave trade to the present.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since the last time we were in town, I Am a Man Plaza debuted next to Clayborn Temple as a memorial to the Sanitation Strike Workers who were with Dr. King the evening before his murder. Provoked by the deaths of a couple of their colleagues, the sanitation workers began protesting better wages and working conditions in February, peaceful protests that were met with violent opposition. Dr. King came to town in April to support the 1,300 men on strike carrying signs emblazoned with their slogan “I AM A MAN” and gave his now famous speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” at Bishop Charles Mason Temple on the evening before his assassination by James Earl Ray. He was 39 then. It’s hard to believe he’d be 90 now were he still alive.
Tumblr media
California-based sculptor Cliff Garten was chosen to create the memorial for the plaza, and he was quoted far and wide saying this a space is for everyone to reflect on the cost of justice.
“When America again grapples with our history of racism by removing hierarchical monuments across the South, we in Memphis have built a very different kind of memorial. I Am a Man Plaza is not a hierarchical place. It is horizontal. It is inclusive and it is participatory.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though it’s a heavy way to start a visit, it will give you important context for the rest of your exploration of Memphis. From the Civil Rights Museum, walk north to Beale Street and feel the city’s musical pulse. I’m not one big on crowds, so I love walking in Memphis with feet 10 feet off of Beale (sorry…had to) on a weekday when it’s less crowded.
Tumblr media
While there, you can grab a beer, take in some live music and pop by A. Schwab, a dry goods store that has been a Memphis staple since 1876.
Tumblr media
After you’ve danced down Beale, hop in your car and drive to Overton Square, where you have plenty of delicious options like Babalu Tacos & Tapas and Memphis Pizza Cafe for lunch. Overton Square was formerly an economically prosperous neighborhood that fell into a blighted state in the 1980s—businesses shutter, it fell into disrepair, it was at risk for demolition until new visionaries took it over in 2012 and brought it back to a thriving state. Today, Overton is full of cute boutiques, but it also houses Overton Park, home to the Memphis Zoo and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
Tumblr media

The Memphis Zoo is large and takes several hours to explore in its entirety. I’ve visited on several occasions with my young cousins, and we love seeing the polar bears, giant pandas and gorillas. The newest exhibit is the Zambezi River Hippo Camp, which houses hippos, flamingos, Nile crocodiles and other exotic animals.
Tumblr media

And coming up next month is Roar and Pour, a culinary evening where you can taste dishes and drinks from some of Memphis’ top chefs and mixologists. There’s also the option to upgrade your ticket to include a Cuban cigar and bourbon pairing.
SVV and I will be headed back to Memphis on April 26 as this is one event we don’t want to miss! I’ve never been to a zoo after hours and can’t wait to dine among the animals.
Tumblr media
Andrea Zucker / Andrea Zucker Photography/ Memphis Tourism
If you’re in town over a weekend, there’s a good chance your visit will overlap with a show at the famed Levitt Shell, the site of Elvis’ first public performance. Like the rest of the Overton areas, this outdoor venue has seen a renaissance in recent years and added 50 concerts annually that are free to the public. Right now, there’s 5 Fridays of Jazz through early May, an event I’m hoping to attend before Roar and Pour.
Tumblr media
Whether there’s a show or not, be sure and factor in time for a drink at Alchemy in Cooper-Young. It boasts one of the best happy hours in the city—half-off most drinks and appetizers from 4 to 6pm on weekdays—and a crazy-long list of bourbons and whiskey to sample.
Tumblr media
Since you’re already in the area, you’d be a foot not to make a reservation at the Beauty Shop, which is always a must for me no matter the day of the week or meal of the day. I’ve been there for lunch, brunch and now dinner; it’s consistently my favorite restaurant in Memphis. And with a motto of “Look Good. Eat Good,” what’s not to love?
Tumblr media
Since 2002, this hip restaurant has been a fixture in Cooper-Young. It occupies a former beauty parlor, in case you couldn’t tell from the overarching theme of the place. I love a creative concept that gives a nod to its building’s former inhabitants, don’t you?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The food offerings are as eclectic as the decor—no, really, you’ll find Thai, Southern, Hawaiian, Japanese and Jewish cuisine all sharing the same menu—ranging from fan favorites like the Watermelon & Wings to the Pork & Peach, which I hungrily devoured on this occasion.
Tumblr media
For those who like to burn the midnight oil, Beale Street is happening any evening of the week, so once you’re done at Beauty Shop, roll yourself back downtown for a night on the town. Looking for a more relaxed nightcap? Head to the (allegedly) haunted (and former brothel) Earnestine & Hazel’s for a beer and soul burger.
Day 2: Saturday
Up and at ’em—it’s brunch time! We’ve always gravitated toward Brother Juniper’s near the University of Memphis for family brunches, but this time we made the pilgrimage to Broad Avenue Arts District. And what a change this creative hub has undergone in recent years.
Tumblr media
Our first stop of the morning was brunch at Bounty on Broad, where we settled in at a table by the window on the second floor for a feast of Cajun-influenced fare with plenty of Memphis pizzazz; I had the BBQ Benedict atop slaw and polenta cakes, while SVV opted for the Grits & Grillades. There were even vegetable juice cocktails on the drinks menu. Aquavit in my carrot juice? Talk about having my cake and eating it, too! Bounty on Broad serves brunch every Saturday and Sunday, and I highly suggest making a reservation.
Tumblr media
I always like to take a stroll after a heavy brunch as my food settles, and the Broad Avenue Arts District was the perfect place to do just that. Brimming with independent, artist-owned boutiques like Falling Into Place and Bingham & Broad, it was hard not to go credit card-crazy, particularly with a new house to outfit with all the pretty things. Good thing we’ll be back next month!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At Five in One Social Club, we met one of the owners who told us all about their screen-printing operation a few blocks over, and you know SVV is never one to turn down a cool T-shirt, so he did not leave empty-handed. At Falling Into Place, keeping true to form, SVV left with a new plant and I scored a cool new pair of earrings. Basically, any kind of home accent or accessory you desire you can find along Broad Avenue’s impressive retail row.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After you’ve done a little retail therapy, go see our pals Kellan and Davin at Wiseacre Brewing Co., the award-winning brewery they opened in 2013 that is responsible for such popular brews as Tiny Bomb, Ananda and, my personal favorite, the Gotta Get Up to Get Down coffee stout. A second brewery location downtown is currently in the works.
Tumblr media
There are a few brightly-colored murals in the area, so be sure and factor in some time to seek them out, as well. And stay tuned for a full mural guide to Memphis, coming very soon!
Tumblr media
Three miles due east of the arts district, Crosstown Concourse adds its own flair to Memphis’ growing entrepreneur scene. This former Sears distribution center sat empty for decades until some community activists reconfigured a use for it, to the tune of $200 million with its focus being the contemporary arts. Ninety years after the building was first constructed, the 10-story, 1.1-million-square-foot Crosstown Concourse debuted in 2017 as a mixed-use concept with apartments, businesses, restaurants and more. It’s also now got a brewery and a cool art bar with globally-inspired cocktails.
Tumblr media
Check the Crosstown Concourse calendar prior to your visit as this hub for the arts regularly hosts live music, screenings, exhibits, talks and other special events.
Now time for your Saturday’s pièce de résistance: dinner at the Gray Canary. From James Beard-nominated duo Michael Hudman and Andy Ticer, the chef-owners behind some my other favorite local institutions like Hog & Hominy and Catherine & Mary’s, the Gray Canary is housed in Old Dominick Distillery and, as you’d expect, places a major focus on a five-star cocktail program.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SVV and I sipped our way through the recommendations of our server, as we paired our cocktails with oysters and several shared small plates, the beets with smoked yogurt and dill and the sweet potato with chorizo, meyer lemon, mint, crème fraîche and pecans being our favorites. By the time the main course—the TGC burger came along—we were almost full, so I’m glad we opted to share a main.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But if you’re thinking that meant we skipped dessert, you clearly don’t know me. I had my eye on the flaming s’mores concoction that is lit with grappa from the moment we walked in the restaurant, and it did not disappoint!
Tumblr media
Day 3: Sunday
On Sunday morning, you’ve got a few different options for breakfast downtown: a casual bite at Tamp & Tap, a full-on feast at Memphis’ oldest diner, the Arcade, or a pastry to go from Bluff City Coffee & Bakery (those homemade Pop-tarts are one of my favorite treats, hands down!).
Tumblr media
Hurry up, though, because you have a trip to Soulsville U.S.A. on your docket for the day!
Tumblr media
Over the last few years, I’ve gotten more into Memphis’ musical history through research and writing projects, and while I’d written about Stax Museum in the past, this was my first pilgrimage to the site of the former recording label that Sam Phillips started in 1950. It’s such an important part of the evolution of modern-day blues and soul music, but I’ve got a full post coming on that next month.
Tumblr media
A lot of places in Memphis are closed on Sundays, like the rest of the South, but Stax opens at 10am daily, except for Mondays when it’s closed, making Sunday morning the ideal time for a visit. Be there when the doors open to avoid crowds, and take your workout clothes with you, as you’re going to want to check out Memphis Rox when you’re through.
Tumblr media
If you think Memphis Rox is just another cool climbing gym, you would be wrong. For starters, their ethos is to “bring rehabilitation, healing and a renewed sense of hope to challenged communities by providing a climbing facility and programs to foster relationships across cultural, racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.”
Tumblr media
This company aims to foster community and encourage fitness by instituting a “pay-what-you-can policy.” So those who can’t afford a gym membership can still come here to use the facilities and take advantage of the juice bar for free to almost nothing. And for those who do want to be regular members but the financial burden is too much, there’a also the option to volunteer at the facility in exchange for membership. How cool is that? Beyond the walls, there’s also a second level with treadmills, stationary bikes, weight machines, yoga rooms, the whole nine yards.
Tumblr media
And, now that you’ve worked off those calories you’re about to consume, no trip to Soulsville U.S.A. is complete without lunch at the Four Way, a traditional Southern meat-and-three that has anchored the neighborhood since 1946. Fill up before you hit the road (or airport) and venture back home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*****
SVV and I are traveling back to Memphis in April for Roar and Pour for anyone in the area who wants to meet us there! We’ll also be adding coverage of Memphis’ musical attributes—for example, can you believe I’ve never been to Graceland?!—and bicentennial celebration then, too. If you want to join us, you can purchase your Roar and Pour tickets here.

How has Zach LaVine emerged as one of the premier shooting guards in the NBA?
The Bulls are back at it Wednesday in the United Center against the Phoenix Suns after a fortuitous three-day break. It proved an appropriate time after three very bad times, the trifecta of blowouts against the East's top teams. So Zach LaVine thought about Matt Thornton.
Thornton, some will recall, was a pretty good, hard throwing White Sox reliever who had a nice career, a 3.41 earned run average over 13 years. But for one week in 2011, he was the Bulls of last week, in a sense, a week in which you could barely watch. Thornton blew four consecutive saves, though he still went on to an effective season and 62 appearances.
The Bulls know the feeling.
"You can't let games of the past compile," LaVine was saying at practice earlier this week. "I always take it like a closing pitcher. Sometimes you give up a walk-off home run, but you've got to go out there and pitch the next day. That's how I see it. You can't dwell on the past. You've got to continue to get better every day and move forward with the day you have in hand."
And so that's the assignment for the Bulls and especially LaVine, who sat out the Toronto loss Saturday with the flu. LaVine admits he probably should not have played in Milwaukee Friday when the Bulls blew a 22-point lead and lost by 19. But he understood how decimated the team is with injuries and tried to push forward.
"I'll play Wednesday for sure," LaVine said. "I played versus Milwaukee and I think that's just what really ran me into the ground. You want to be out there. I've already missed enough games in my career. I don't want to miss any games. So you feel for them."
Tumblr media
The Bulls continued to absorb those blows, however, as the team revealed Monday Denzel Valentine will need ankle surgery and likely is out for the rest of the season.
It's left LaVine to attempt to prop up a team missing its starting point guard, starting power forward, starting small forward in perhaps Valentine and top reserve at a time a rookie is starting at center and a recovering two-time ACL surgery victim now is at small forward. It's put a target on LaVine like no other in the NBA, and the effects have been obvious.
You stop Zach LaVine, you pretty much beat the Bulls.
Of course, you could beat the Bulls a lot of times while not stopping Zach LaVine with so many players injured.
But in not so much of a small sample anymore, LaVine with the Bulls closing in on the first quarter of the season has emerged as one of the premier shooting guards in the NBA.
"You can't dwell on the past. You've got to continue to get better every day and move forward with the day you have in hand." Zach LaVine
The 6-5 200-pound highlight dunker ranks with the likes of Victor Oladipo, James Harden, DeMar DeRozan and probably Jimmy Butler as the most versatile and all around contributing and skilled shooting guards in the NBA. Which the rest of the NBA essentially took notice of after the first 11 games during which LaVine was averaging 27.9 points on 47 percent shooting and 35 percent on threes. With arguably the most defensive attention paid to one player given the lack of scoring around him, LaVine the last five games is averaging 19.4 points on 34 percent shooting and 18 percent on threes.
Yet, in that time LaVine still is among the best shooting guards in the league averaging 6.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists.
For the season, LaVine is averaging 5.4 rebounds. That trails just Oladipo, Harden, DeRozan and Buddy Hield among shooting guards. Among shooting guards, LaVine trials the Suns' Devin Booker, who doesn't have a point guard to play with, James Harden, DeRozan, Oladipo, Lou Williams, Evan Turner and Evan Fornier in assists. But LaVine ranks only behind Harden in scoring among shooting guards at 25.3, which is ninth in the league. And LaVine is fourth in the NBA in minutes per game even after he is less than a year from his own return from ACL surgery, playing more minutes per game than even Jimmy Butler. Butler's statistics will probably improve for him to remain in the conversation. LaVine leads Butler in scoring and rebounding and essentially is tied in assists and hasn't produced any disruption. Klay Thompson and Bradley Beal don't do as much in rebounding and passing, though Thompson is an elite defender. LaVine is improving.
Which, overall, points out how vital LaVine is to the Bulls and how necessary it is to have him on the basketball court.
Opponents took a few weeks, but they figured it out and LaVine now sees a steady stream of defenders with double teams, traps, ice tactics to the baseline as Thibs will demand later this week, help and recover, more eyes focused on LaVine that the t-shirt cannon shooters.
LaVine has done the right thing, passing, rebounding, forcing his way to the free throw line. He's ninth overall in the NBA in free throw attempts per game, and No. 1 among shooting guards.
Tumblr media
"I worked on that a lot this offseason, being able to create around the rim and draw contact and finish with both hands creatively," said LaVine. "Obviously, I know you're going to get your shot blocked every once in a while. But you have to be crafty around the rim and be able to finish."
LaVine is working on a run of tough shooting games, a six for 20, eight for 23, nine for 26 against the Bucks. But it's become, in a sense, almost like with Michael Jordan and the 80s Bulls. I will interrupt to say LaVine is no Jordan. But with some of the lineups the Bulls have had to play lately, you'd rather have LaVine attempting a tough shot than some others attempting a somewhat better shot.
Of course, that's also the balance that Jordan had to eventually learn. Though he phrased it succinctly once when he asked whether he should be shooting against a triple team or Granville Waiters, Earl Cureton and Steve Colter at all. Those were your 1986-87 Bulls, a 40-42 team on which Jordan averaged 37 points with an early season run of nine straight games scoring at least 40 and 11 of 12. Ah, the good old days. It wasn't even a .500 team and better players were needed.
The Bulls will start if they can get some healthier players.
Lauri Markkanen has started light workouts, though his return still is uncertain.
"Lauri, I see him working out, running and getting his shots in," said LaVine. "Hopefully his elbow's feeling a lot better. He's one of the main key pieces in this organization. He's such a sensational player on the offensive end and it helps out defensively as well. I can't wait to have him back."
Kris Dunn and Bobby Portis aren't doing as much as Markkanen.
So it still Has to be LaVine.
The Bulls will emphasize ball movement and spacing and other vital offensive concepts, but the opposing scouting reports generally are clear: "Ryan Arcidiacono and Antonio Blakeney aren't beating us. Watch out for No. 8."
"He's one of the main key pieces in this organization. He's such a sensational player on the offensive end and it helps out defensively as well. I can't wait to have him back." Zach LaVine on Lauri Markkanen
"We looked tired," LaVine offered about the Toronto loss. "We looked a little injured and regardless of the fact, I think we still fought. We're not giving in. It might have been an ugly game, but at the end of the day I know we're still going out and competing and going out there to win. I think I've just got to knock down some easy shots. I take some tough ones going to the rim. I try not to force them. Get back to where I was at. I was scoring the ball really easy and getting six, seven easy ones in the paint; try to draw fouls and get to the free throw line."
It will have to be until the reinforcements recover. Though a warning to Zach: Those guys at your apartment door in a defensive stance? They might be playing for some Bulls opponents.
