Random collection of things I noticed and immediately overthought while watching Coraline
I got to see Coraline in theatres for its 15th anniversary. It was amazing, if you can find a theatre near you that's playing it Go Watch It IT DESERVES THE BIG SCREEN SO MUCH. But anyway while I was watching it my little hamster brain kept noticing things and then ran around in circles on the drive home. So have some random observations.
I Cannot Eat and I Must Cook
The Other Mother is always cooking.  3 out of the 4 times Coraline goes to the Other world Other Mother is shown actively cooking.  Including after she’s gone full hangry and lost the plot.  The only time she’s not waiting for Coraline is her 3rd visit, and even then there’s a full spread of food waiting for her instead.  By this point my brain was fully spinning in little hamster ball circles thinking about idealized caricatures of mothers always cooking and the traditional jobs a mother’s ‘supposed’ to do.  But then on the drive home, I realized it was way simpler.  Coraline directly asks her real mom why she never cooks right in front of Little Me.  It’s literally just a direct response.
(Also, Other Wybie doesn't eat either, but that's cause his mouth literally can't open.)
Little Me's Fashion Choice
The Little Me doll wears a skirt!  When we first see real Coraline she’s in jeans.  The movie opens with them moving in and Wybie drops off the Little Me doll the next day, so there was no chance to see Coraline in anything other than jeans.  In fact we only see her in a skirt once, and that’s halfway through the movie in the clothes shopping scene.  But the Other Mother still puts Little Me in a skirt.  There’s this cool anniversary segment after the movie, and they showed some of the concept sketches for Coraline and she’s in a skirt in them, so that might be part of why Little Me’s in one, either as a nod or because the doll’s design was finalized before the costumes.  But looking at it through a strictly Watsonian reading, it makes sense that the Other Mother’s idea of proper clothes is more traditional.  She clearly adapts though, since Coraline’s star outfit has pants.
EYES
One of Wybie’s eye’s is bigger than the others.  This is mirrored in Other Wybie.
One of Charlie’s eye’s is higher than the other.  This is not mirrored in Other Father as far as I could tell.
I’ve seen others point out that Other Spink and Other Forcible have white buttons when they’re old and black buttons once they shed their skin and become young, as a reference to how the real Spink and Forcible can’t see well anymore.  But while the Others both get white buttons, only the real Miss Forcible has clouded eyes; Miss Spink’s eyes are still brown.
Coraline and Colors
Coraline’s favorite color is blue.  It’s the color of her hair, her fingernail polish, her comforter, her cyclops squid toy… But despite all this that’s not the color the movie associates with Coraline.  The movie actually associates Coraline with a whole bunch of warm, natural colors, mainly pinkish oranges.  Beyond that, there’s of course her iconic bright yellow rain coat of course, and a large spattering of mossy green.  Literally, the only time we don’t see her in warm colors is when she’s in the outfit Other Mother made her.  (Sidenote, what happened to her original clothes she changed out of?  Are they just gone forever in the Other world?).  To go full pretentious analysist, Coraline does seem to get a color for when she’s particularly closed off or guarded of this really desaturated grey tinged navy which is the color of both her jacket in the shopping scene and her vest when she’s squaring off.
Other Father’s smoking jacket/house coat is a red-orange, a little darker than most of Coraline’s clothes, fully falling in line with her colors rather than Other Mother’s pure red.  This doesn’t come from Charlie either, he’s in a green Michigan State sweatshirt pretty much the whole movie.  It’s a nice way to show his loyalty early (I know I’m not the first one to notice this, but it’s still neat.) The picture frame in her room of the goodbye picture is notably in Coraline’s orange with some kind of swirly pattern. The picture in the Other world has a different gold metal looking frame. Fancier, but more importantly not in Coraline’s colors anymore. Despite being copies of her friends the Other friends pressure Coraline to stay while she’s having her realization freak out. (Mention to young Other Spink and Other Forcible whose outfits are technically pink and green but slightly off from Coraline’s and by the time we see them again during the scavenger hunt the colors have shifted to really cold undertoned, almost unnatural shades of them.)
Mel is pretty much exclusively in cream to beige.  The only real color we see for her is her bag and jacket first seen in the shopping scene, both of which are in Coraline’s colors, if significantly more desaturated to fit her look better.  The car scene became really interesting to look at because Mel’s in Coraline’s colors while Coraline, in her dark jacket is visibly not for the first time in the movie.  Wybie’s grandma at the end of the movie is in a really soft yellow dress with an orange sash, neatly aligning her Coraline too, which is also really fun!
But the most interesting person, color wise is actually Wybie.  I’m serious, it’s really cool!  Wybie’s big color, is obviously black, and slivery-white as thanks to his helmet, gloves, and reflective patches.  Meanwhile Other Wybie is only associated with black since Other Mother’s ‘improvements’ sort of boy-next-doorified his grunge look.  He and Other Mother are really the only ones whose outfits (originally) mirror their counterparts.  What really makes it fun is Wybie’s secondary color.  Wybie’s bike, which makes two very memorable appearances, is bright red.  There is next to no true red in the real world until the ending scene.  Wybie’s colors are the exact same as the Other Mother’s.  And the only other color he has?  The creepy green light from his helmet, the same as the final fight with the Other Mother the mirror into the prison room makes when Other Mother (and Other Wybie) yank Coraline through it.

My Top 50 Albums of 2023
Finally got around to putting this together, the first time I've been able to have a list like this in...a long time. At least a decade. So, here we are. I tried to listen to a lot, but of course there will be things I wasn't able to get to. Let me know if you think something is missing, and I'll be sure to check it out, if I haven't already gotten to it. I tried to give a succinct blurb and a key track for each album too, to make it easier to check out.
Notes on my rankings: This is based on around 60% how much I personally liked the album, and 40% how objectively good I thought it was. Therefore there will definitely be things on here you won't see on other lists, and probably some albums that would be expected, that won't show up. Also, I only took into account albums specifically released in 2023, unlike lists from most publications (so no SZA album, which would've been top 10).
Anyway, here we go. Full list under the cut.
50. The Whaler - Home is Where: Starting off with a Midwest Emo album is so typical of me, but this one was good, if a little odd at times (not a bad thing). Key Track: Yes! Yes! A Thousand Times Yes!
49. Did You Know That There's a Tunnel under Ocean Blvd - Lana Del Rey: Good but not great, this one was just a bit too long and samey in the middle for me. Still a solid listen though. Key Track: A&W
48. Jaguar II - Victoria Monét: A pop tinged R&B album, full of good beats and solid lyricism, this one had its fair share of bangers on it. Key Track: Smoke
47. Voir Dire - Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist: Earl Sweatshirt is one of the best lyricists out there, and he continues on this collab album full of fun tracks. Key Track: The Caliphate
46. Guts - Olivia Rodrigo: I liked when this album really leaned into the punchier, pop-punk tinged tracks, but I felt that a few of the ballads on the back half were a bit lacking to rank it higher. Key Track: Bad Idea Right?
45. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan: The flip side of the previous album, I really liked when this album had more room to breathe in the middle of the album, whereas the more over the top pop tracks were more hit or miss for me. Key Track: Casual
44. I Killed Your Dog - L'Rain: Modern day psychedelic rock, this was a good time, though my biggest complaint is I wish a lot of the songs were a bit longer. Key Track: Pet Rock
43. The Record - boygenius: A supergroup album that definitely sounded best when it really leaned into the fact that it was a supergroup album. Key Track: Not Strong Enough
42. Blondshell - Blondshell: These next two both fall in the genre of indie that is best described as 90s alt revival, and considering I like 90s music, I thought both these were good. Key Track: Sepsis
41. Lucky For You - Bully: I thought the highs on this one were a bit higher than the previous, and just a really good time throughout. Key Track: All I Do
40. No Joy - Spanish Love Songs: One of the albums I was most looking forward to this year, it met all my expectations while shifting genres into something I've seen lovingly described as Heartland Emo. Key Track: Clean-Up Crew
39. Time Ain't Accidental - Jess Williamson: This was a break up album that was less about the break up and more about moving past, a nice wrinkle for a country album. Key Track: Hunter
38. Life Under the Gun - Militarie Gun: This album has grown on me more than just about any other from my first listen. I didn't think it was that special on first listen, yet I kept finding myself going back to it. Key Track: Never Fucked Up Once
37. Fountain Baby - Amaarae: Just a really fun, summertime album. A really, really easy album to dance to. Key Track: Counterfeit
36. Model/Actriz - Dogsbody: This album sounded like if NIN made music even more specifically for gay clubs, a fascinating industrial listen. Key Track: Mosquito
35. Red Moon in Venus - Kali Uchis: A great, groovy modern R&B album with some high highs but also a few that tracks that were just fine. Key Track: I Wish You Roses
34. This is Why - Paramore: As someone who is admittedly not too big on their earlier work, I've enjoyed their shift into post-punk revival. This was a good time, especially the second half of the album. Key Track: This is Why
33. The Enduring Spirit - Tomb Mold: I did not expect to get into a death metal album as much as I did this one, but it was surprisingly melodic, and the guitar shreds throughout. Key Track: Fate's Tangled Thread
32. The Greater Wings - Julie Byrne: A soft, peaceful folk album, featuring minimal production that allows her vocals to truly shine through. Key Track: Lightning Comes Up From the Ground
31. The Window - Ratboys: Nothing groundbreaking, just really well put together, perfectly executed, and diverse sounding indie rock. Key Track: The Window
30. Oh Me Oh My - Lonnie Holley: Probably the most interesting album I listened to all year, this was an emotional whirlwind. Almost felt like listening to a history lecture set to music at times. Key Track: Mount Meigs
29. Why Would I Watch? - Hot Mulligan: This year I finally bought into the hype around this band. I probably listened to it more than just about most albums on this list. Perfect mix of pop-punk and midwest emo. Key Track: Shhhh! Golf Is On
28. Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling - Slaughter Beach, Dog: Music to sit outside in the summer evening, relax, and drink a beer to, all the makings of a great alt-country album. Key Track: Strange Weather
27. Madres - Sofia Kourtesis: House music isn't necessarily my genre, but I couldn't help dancing along with this one. A great time. Key Track: How Music Makes You Feel Better
26. But Here We Are - Foo Fighters: In my opinion, the best Foo Fighters album in about 25 years, as Dave Grohl worked through his grief through passionate songwriting. Key Track: Rest
25. Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume - Yves Tumor: A psychedelic post punk album with cool guitar work and great vocals, all which form a winning combination. Key Track: God is a Circle
24. Erotic Probiotic 2 - Nourished by Time: A very catchy, albeit sort of odd, experimental R&B album, not quite sure how it worked, but it did. Key Track: Shed That Fear
23. Heaven Knows - PinkPantheress: I couldn't help but have a good time with this one, a great album to dance to, very fun. Key Track: True Romance
22. Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love? - Kara Jackson: With beautiful vocals singing great, passionate songwriting, this was a fantastic folk album. Key Track: Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?
21. Let's Start Here - Lil Yacthy: The most surprising album of the year for me, a genre shift into a more psychedelic rock sound worked out amazingly well for him. Key Track: Reach The Sunshine.
20. Heaven is a Junkyard - Youth Lagoon: This was an extremely introspective indie pop album, following a major health scare for the artist, with the emotion shining through with every word. Key Track: Prizefighter
19. Scaring the Hoes - JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown: An experimental hip hop album from two guys full of tongue in cheek internet jokes and all kinds of random references, this one was a fun time. Key Track: Kingdom Hearts Key
18. Softscars - Yeule: A fun mixture of dream pop and electronica, the opening track is one of my absolute favorites of the year. Key Track: X W X
17. The Land is Inhospitable and So are We - Mitski: A beautiful, mellow, and emotional album (and my first introduction to her work, surprisingly). Key Track: My Love Mine All Mine
16. The Loveliest Time - Carly Rae Jepsen: I shouldn't be surprised that she managed to put an album of b-sides out that surpassed the previous album, and yet... Key Track: Psychedelic Switch
15. That! Feels Good! - Jessie Ware: Disco revival? Disco revival! This one is just a great time throughout, a ton of fun. Key Track: Free Yourself
14. Weathervanes - Jason Isbell: One of the best modern country songwriters has done it again, an easy listen even with the long run time. Key Track: Cast Iron Skillet
13. Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? - McKinley Dixon: Beautiful jazz based production as well as very personal raps, this one reminded me quite a bit of some of the rap albums I loved growing up. Key Track: Run, Run, Run
12. After the Magic - Parannoul: A Korean shoegaze album with more than a hint of emo, as well as extremely captivating vocals. An extremely well layered album. Key Track: Arrival
11. Lahai - Sampha: Alt-R&B album with experimental, almost atomspheric production and very smooth vocals, a very crisp listen. Key Track: Suspended
10. Desire, I Want to Turn Into You - Caroline Polachek: I'll be the first to admit that outside of actually being in a club, pop music isn't necessarily my thing. But there was something about this album that was a lot of fun. The production here is outstanding, varying between traditional and experimental sounds, and her vocals are fantastic too. A really fun time. Key Track: Welcome to My Island
9. Zach Bryan - Zach Bryan: My highest ranking pure country album of the year, this one was just so well put together. Forgoing the modern country sound for a more slowed down production, it really let the strong vocals and genuine emotion shine through. Key Track: I Remember Everything
8. Enola Gay - Asia Menor: This was the debut album from this Chilean band, which got a lot of buzz online, but less so in traditional media outlets. Which is a shame because it is just a lot of fun musically. A solid mix of indie post-punk, with more than a fair share of math rock and emo/post-hardcore thrown in. One of my favorite listens of the year. Key Track: La Naturaleza
7. We Buy Diabetic Test Strips - Armand Hammer: The first of two billy woods related projects in my top 10, this one was such a fascinating listen. A rather experimental project, this mixed conscious raps over almost ambient beats. It took a second to get used to, but once you do, it really shines. Honestly, it probably shouldn't have worked as well as it did, but it really really did. A great time. Key Track: Y'all Can't Stand Right Here
6. My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross - ANOHNI and the Johnsons: One of the last albums I listened to this year, this one was beautiful and heart wrenching and just fantastic. With a 60s soul sound mixed with modern flourishes, the instrumentals were great. They were soft when they needed to be but grandiose at all the right times, perfectly matching her emotionally heavy vocals. A fantastic listen. Key Track: Rest
5. Rat Saw God - Wednesday: Probably the album I debated the ranking on the most, as I've had it everywhere between 5 and 15, but I just kept coming back to it. The very intense vocals, the mixture between alt country and noise rock, and the fantastic guitar work throughout, all make this one of the highlights of the year for me. Key Track: Chosen to Deserve
4. Quaranta - Danny Brown: Danny Brown's second appearance on this list (two 2-timers in the top 5 too), this one was my favorite of the two releases he was involved in this year. He took a more low key (by his standards) approach to his usual delivery style on this one, and it allowed his words to have the added emphasis they needed. A great rap album. Key Track: Jenn's Terrific Vacation
3. Hellmode - Jeff Rosenstock: To those of you who know me well, you probably already know that this was my personal favorite album of the year. Jeff is the most innovative artist in the pop punk realm, and he managed to put together an album that was diverse and layered and better on every listen. Seeing him perform the whole thing in its entirety was the highlight of my music experiences this year. Key Track: 3 Summers
2. Maps - billy woods & Kenny Segal: The second of two billy woods appearances on this years list, this album was, in my opinion, both more easily accessible and technically better than the Armand Hammer release. Beautiful mixture of jazz and atmospheric beats with superb storytelling, just a great listen. Key Track: FaceTime
1. Javelin - Sufjan Stevens: As soon as I listened to this one, I was almost certain that it was going to be my album of the year, and nothing else I listened to after really made me question it. Truly a beautiful expression of love and grief and loss. No other choice in my opinion. Key Track: Shit Talk

At this point I hope that anyone still here is at least enjoying some of my recs. Obviously over the course of these 50 songs I've had a few songs in the back of my head that I really liked, but didn't have anywhere to put them or there was just a better choice for the category. So naturally here's one last playlist of things I just really like and want to share. There's no rhyme or reason here just enjoy!
Break Da Law '95' I could do a thesis on how influential Three 6 Mafia has been on modern hip-hop despite the fact that I never hear anyone mention them. BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW BREAK DA LAW
King Kunta This is Kendrick's biggest hit. It goes really hard.
Really Doe Danny Brown featuring Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Earl Sweatshirt. I fucking love everything on Atrocity Exhibition. Top ten album for me.
My Philosophy The death of DJ Scott La Rock was a turning point for the hip-hop scene. My Philosophy perfectly underscores the transition from teen bravado to politically charged anger that can be seen in KRS-One's performance.
Humpty Dance This song is hilarious. You can't stop me from singing along.
911 Is A Joke Remember when Flavor Flav had a reality dating show on MTV? That was weird.
Shadowboxin' Liquid Swords is another top ten album and this is prolly the best track off it. GZA and Method man square off and RZA crafts a beat meant to give Method Man's style a bit more spotlight.
Spiritual Healing The leading act in industrial hip-hop. Dälek are confrontational, abrasive and really good. fans of industrial music might enjoy these guys.
Earth People Dr. Octagon is one of Kool Keith's personas. He is a space alien from Jupiter with green and silver skin a pink afro and exposed glowing brain. Dr. Octagon mostly does medical malpractice for fun. Sometimes my taste in things is the stupider the better.
guns.up I've decided to end on something completely abrasive and unlistenable to the general public. clipping is a harsh noise hip-hop project from the mind of Daveed Diggs. If that name sounds familiar to you then you probably remember him for his hatsune miku binder. Daveed Diggs originated the role of Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. So my challenge to all the Hamilton fans is this: Try to listen through midcity by clipping. Do it wimps!
That's All Folks! Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6

pseudo music analyzers on youtube are always like "it's physically impossible to rap along to rigamortus by kendrick lamar 🤯🤯🤯" which literally isn't true but nobody's talking abt the fact that it's genuinely physically impossible to bob your head along to shattered dreams by earl sweatshirt in a way that doesn't feel lame and like you have no idea what you're doing

[2:01]
“can’t sleep?”
you would say your roommate just standing there in the dim light of the kitchen counts as a jumpscare, but he looks too good for that.
“no,” you sigh. “we gotta stop meeting like this, you know.”
it’s a relief when doyoung smiles at your admittedly lame joke, but for some reason, there’s a tension in the air you can’t explain. it hangs off him like a wet towel, fills your lungs deep and heavy.
“you want tea? peppermint?”
you nod, ignoring the fact that he already knows your usual.
you moved in just two weeks ago—your previous housing plans fell through, and lo and behold, your brother’s best friend happened to have a spare bedroom.
unfortunately, your brother’s best friend also happens to be the guy you’ve had a crush on for approximately three years and two months, not counting the time you went to college and reminded yourself that other men do, in fact, exist.
now he’s big and tall and is a history grad student, and you actually considered splitting taeyong’s closet-sized studio with him instead of living in your own personal hell.
worse, it’s the fifth time this week that you’ve had these multi hour past-midnight conversations. yesterday it was wheat thins and existentialism, and the day before it was the ethics of the angry birds movie. you hate that he’s smart because it makes him that much hotter.
“you should really fix that sleep schedule of yours,” he says in that very doyoung way of his, pretty lips pursed with concern.
he hands you a mug, one that you very deftly note is one of his, even though you have plenty of your own. this is the kind of thing you read into when you have the most gut-wrenchingly stupid thing for a guy you will never pull.
“as if you have a better one.” you pick up the fat book he’s left on the counter—the history of the decline and fall of the roman empire—and admire the neat walls of post-its lining the pages. “what are you doing up?”
doyoung settles next to you, leaned up against the counter looking like some hot librarian with his specs, and you hand him the book with a weak hand.
your shoulders touch, and you notice he smells like pine.
“studying,” he admits. he takes a sip from his own mug (earl gray because it’s caffeinated). “and then i wondered if i would find you out here again, going through the cabinets like some kind of raccoon.”
he puts the book down, and you have the feeling that it is not a studying kind of night.
“it’s not my fault i don’t understand the weird marie kondo way you organized your pantry. who the hell puts the cereal in the bottom cabinet,” you tease, finding that you love the way his mouth folds up when he gets embarrassed.
“it’s a work in progress.”
he smiles and then you smile and then you look down at your cup and watch the little tea bag bob up and down because you can’t bear to make eye contact for another second.
“i—,” doyoung starts, clearly trying to find words, anything to say.
you turn to face him once more, choosing to not perceive the fact that he’s looking at you, that he’s been looking at you, almost like he can see through the big, linty sweatshirt you have on.
his eyes draw you in; it’s a cruelly magnetic force that pulls you to him until you’re toe to toe and you can swear your heartbeat is so fast and hard that you can feel it in the air.
it’s that same force that washes over you, fills you with a boldness unknown to you. and you do what the you of years ago couldn’t dare to do—you bring your lips to those perfect ones of his, and you kiss him.
his body tenses against yours, and you’re now confident that you’ve supremely fucked up. but then he places his mug on the counter and pulls back, only to kiss you again, slow and romantic, like he means it.
“thank god,” he says, half whisper because you’re still on him, and you’re glad it’s dark because you are most likely the color of a ripe tomato.
“i—i didn’t know,” you manage to squeak out, so close to him you can see your reflection in his glasses. you can’t help but look back down at his lips, so unfairly soft and inviting, and how they’re now glossy with you. “i wasn’t sure.”
“neither did i,” he laughs, and it’s almost like you can see the dignity flood back into his body, because he then follows it with, “i should’ve asked you on a date first, huh? or at least—”
“please shut up and kiss me again.”
he does.

Could you please recommend a smutty book with a good "almost caught fucking" scene?
Sure! We love a good exhibitionist (purposeful or not) moment so here are some of my favorites:
Glory and the Master of Shadows by Grace Callaway: Wei goes down on Glory in her house and they hear creaking in the hallway and it turns out the next morning it was Glory's mom (to be fair, Maggie has zero legs to stand based on what she and Ransom get up to in their own book).
The Duke Who Knew Too Much by Grace Callaway: Fabulous blowjob scene where (I mean idk how close they are to getting caught but they definitely catch other people) they hear another man through the curtain giving instructions to a woman on how to blow him and Emma enthusiastically follows these instructions on Alaric.
The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham: Another curtain blowjob scene! This time at their own engagement party and the curtain drops juuuuust as Constances is finishing Apthorp off. Icons.
One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean: Cross is soooo jealous someone kissed Pippa before him that he eats her out in the corner of his gaming hell.
Thief of Shadows by Elizabeth Hoyt: Isabel is sneaking around a private residence and is nearly caught but is saved by Winter who drags her in a corner and then she proceeds to blow him with such feeling that they're both crying by the end.
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas: In which Derek Craven is thoroughly horrified (and turned on) that the hot woman he's about to have sex with is, in fact, Sara Fielding, so he tells her to go back to where she came from but then starts fingering her anyway, and is then interrupted by an employee while they frantically try to put themselves to rights.
The Education of Ivy Leavold by Sierra Simone: Julian and Silas finger Ivy under the table in a hotel dining room and I think Silas is basically like "listen.... if the other diners have ever had an orgasm, they knew what was going on here" while they carry her out.
Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas: Tom fingers Cassandra through an orgasm while yelling at her cousin to stay out of the library when he wants to check in.
Contemporary:
lmao my first instinct was to say Lush Money by Angelina M. Lopez but they were caught by the paparazzi who all got excellent shots of Mateo eating Roxanne out from under her skirt in a car. But it's the thought that counts.
Heartless by Elsie Silver actually really surprised me because in a small town rancher romance, you generally don't expect him to gag the heroine with her panties and bend her over while a birthday party is taking place a few hundred feet away. What a winner.
Asking for Trouble by Tessa Bailey: Brent fingers Hayden in her kitchen during a dinner party and juuuuust as she climaxes a little old lady wanders in and is like "were you stealing a kiss, mister?"
The Rebel King by Kennedy Ryan: Max is fully sucking on Lennix's nipples through her sweatshirt (and then under her sweatshirt) while there's an apartment full of other people getting very turned on listening to them from the next room. So I guess technically they were caught? Or they weren't? idk but it's a fun one.
The Evolution of SIn trilogy by Giana Darling has a few nearly-caught moments, including a scene where he's fingering her in a beach in Mexico, and another where he's juuuust finished having sex with her and there's someone at the door of their hotel suite and surprise! It's her sister who's his fiancée.

•things i learned in September :::::
-trusting oneself and loving oneself are slightly different.
(i’m practicing on the trust part)
-my astrological aspects point to my emotions (that I have so many mixed feelings about) actually being the force that will lead me to my “destiny” …if you will.
-being in a state of personal performance through pure expression is the same act a painter embodies. (Also take note to the fact you have access to different paintbrushes)
-It feels good seeing how far courage will take you
-You don’t have to stay in a state of suffering in order to succeed in fact you mustn’t act from an older more scared state that you once embodied due to living in a state of survival
-confidence is amplified through action
-resistance is a secret law to universe and understanding it is power (I will not expand on this rn but it makes so much sense in my head)
-We are not stuck unless we want to be, We must claim our freedom
-Hoda Kova is genius ::: such a great spring collection
-Earl Sweatshirt’s “Some Rap Songs” album is a masterpiece

"Baby are you even listening to me? Always on the phone, ooh I wish I could toss it out of your hand sometimes!" With that, Renelle yanks at his belt loop, narrowing her gaze up at his.
"Pay. Attention. To. ME."
Chris always enjoyed his after work conversations with Ren. Often laughing about the day's events, little shows they might have watched and in jokes they developed. As always they had a long conversation about an old song from his childhood. The infamous four count track from the Clipse and the Neptunes, Grindin.
As always the baker went on about how the track 'changed school lunch tables for years'. His stories brought about the music that was her giggles and of course that lead to a history on the Neptunes. So much so, when they ended up at her place he ended up in a google spiral on their production history.
With his phone floating in front of him, he discovered some facts he already knew (they produced a majority of the hits inthe 2000's) and some things he never knew (who knew that was Pharrell whispering on SZA's super model. Or Chad Hugo played trumpet on Earl Sweatshirt's album!) Chris must have gotten so caught up in his google and wiki spiral, he must have zoned out.
"Hmm?" Chris mused before looking towards Ren, "I'm sorry babe I got-"
Then he felt her fingers around his belt loop and he was instantly closer to the neko. A bright red hue fills his cheeks as his eyes widened at Ren, no doubt surprised by her strength. "...Ok," he finally spoke. "Sorry about that...wow..."
He catches himself.
"I mean what were you saying?"

Albums of 2023 part 2
And so, on from part 1, we continue. This is more dreamy synth-dub that sits perfectly next to the Harrow album: Richard Norris is another artist with an extraordinarily long and illustrious career but who also has never lost the exploratory urge and total delight in sonic finesse.
Tumblr media
Honestly Uruguayan-in-Ireland Lila Tirando a Violeta is right up there with the very best of the "deconstructed club" generation - dark, gothic, complex, VERY WEIRD - and this collab with Berliner Sin Maldita is up there with her best. It's really, REALLY intense!
Tumblr media
Just impossibly beautiful elegies from ambient harpist Mary Lattimore which builds towards the final track collaboration with Slowdive's Rachel Goswell that is so lovely it will single handedly bring back swooning as a popular pastime.
Tumblr media
Officially an EP but there's enough here to cement Nia Archives's place as a heavyweight - add "Off Wiv Ya Headz" and that Jorja Smith remix, and she's had a humdinger of a 2023....
Tumblr media
Saw some discourse suggesting that Burna Boy is resting on his laurels here, but I don't hear it. Maybe it's the fact that the cover looks dashed-off? But musically, this bangs: it expertly joins so many dots but keeps his voice and personality right at the heart of it.
Tumblr media
I mean come on there was no way a collab between Earl Sweatshirt and The Alchemist was going to be anything but good, right? Just purest essence of deep and dreamy stoner hip hop. Yet another small (27min) but beautifully formed album - definitely a trend there.
Tumblr media
Feels kind of (literally) sacrilegious to say I prefer Cleo Sol's more personal, less scriptural records (e.g. Rose in the Dark) - and this is, top to bottom, a gospel album - but the conviction to her performance and the whole realisation of it here is still really magical.
Tumblr media
From Coventry via Skopje, man like NOT_MDK's first album in 23 years, and he's zooming into the deep flows that join grime and dubstep into the longer, deeper electronic funk continuum... These tracks are so crisp and crunchy!
Tumblr media
She's from Turkey but Ahu's been plugged into the London Plastic People / NTS / etc scene for years - file this with Yazmin Lacey and similar LDN soul-jazz, also it's very Boho and vibesy and incensey, definitely one to light your best candles for.
Tumblr media
Can't remember who put me on to this, possibly Radio 3? Anyway if cold wet misty Scottish hillsides are your jam Claire M Singer has you covered - these slower-than-slowly unfolding organ-led pieces practically smell of wet moss, and are extremely beautiful.
Tumblr media
He's lent vocals to a who's who of electronic music, but it turns out Paul St Hilaire's own studio craft is the equal of just about any of them - this is just a stunning, ocean-deep album of dub abstraction and subtly potent lyricism.
Tumblr media
Icelander Eva Jóhannsdóttir aka EVA808 has already made a name in the dubstep/grime world but this is her really spreading her creative wings. Mad psychedelia, elemental abstraction, movie-theme composition - there's not much she can't do. Big things beckon!
Tumblr media
There's still SO much to say about amapiano, and so much incredible UK, SA and wider world stuff last year (this isn't even the only great DJ Maphorisa album - he had THREE out in 2023, including a mini album with Shino Kikai and a 25-track one with fellow originator Kabza De Small!!). Suffice to say this has gorgeous songs, primal grooves, endlessly sophisticated mixdowns and bass that'll take your breath away.
Tumblr media
Just gonna link to my review for this one (it's got the music embedded) - but TL;DR Darren J Cunningham aka Actress is the holy prophet of the era of enshittification, yet for all that his music is constantly "off" and made for a world that is "off", he alchemises it into real gold.
Tumblr media
Yeah I'm going to be THAT space-jazz hipster and say this is the record I wish Andre3000 (who is on it, and Carlos Niño co-produced his album) had made. It's just a more lavish, free, FUN way to cavort with the five-dimensional fractal machine elves.
Tumblr media
Zoning in on the platonic breakbeat mathematics that underly Jersey / B'more club Chicago hip house, UK rave, trip hop etc, Bored Lord could seem arch or retro if her beats weren't so gloriously functional and bumping.
Tumblr media
Fed up of generic records? You will never EVER find another one that sounds like IFS MA. Polish abstract slightly Autechre-y footwork / drum'n'bass with Japanese rapper MA sounding like a cyborg beat poet Taliban Trim and I.... 🤯
Tumblr media
Every man jack and their dog are doing high bpm retro rave lately but you can trust Meemo Comma to put a fresh and uneasy twist on it. These tracks will get you proper buzzing up loud! I got to DJ for her live performance of this at Spiritland earlier in the year, hearing them on that system was a real treat.
Tumblr media
You get a twofer with this one. Phil Kieran's ode to Belfast is gorgeous in studio form here, but he also recorded and released a version with the Ulster Orchestra that single handedly revivifies the idea of electronic music done classical style!
Tumblr media
Two true underground troupers teaming up here - Jordan GCZ from Juju & Jordash and David "Move D" Moufang with some otherworldly good-dream ambient, deep house and space-soul jams heavy on the Fender Rhodes, fuzzy reverberation and sensually sweeping portamento.
Tumblr media
My musical safe place for so much of this year. Brooklyn "electronic jam band" Purelink somehow burrowed into electronic music history and found the softest, happiest, warmest fur lined chamber and then invited us in. I cannot emphasise enough how LOVELY this record is.
Tumblr media
More modular synth grooves from E Ruscha aka Secret Circuits, but no over-indulgence here and the grooves REALLY DO GROOVE. Trippy as a weasel circus and twice as funky.
Tumblr media
Talking of trippy, here's Optimo Music's second acid-drenched entry, from the man formerly known as TB Arthur and the mighty Magda trading as Blotter Trax, it's a kind of parallel universe early 80s alt disco where everything gurgles and melts.
Tumblr media
More from South Africa - King Mzaiza Sound via the reliably tough Parisian PSSNGR label - not 100% sure what you'd call this though it definitely has some gqom sonics, some trap drums, and some strident rap vocals... It's HARD AS NAILS is what it is.
Tumblr media
EVEN HARDER - Nyege Nyege brought us a sampler of this (and I don't use mental health language lightly) FUCKING MENTAL shrieking, raging, solvent-huffing sound from São Paulo stewarded by the young DJ K, and it's extremely funky and scarily thrilling.
Tumblr media
OK there we go, part three is here.....

It’s been a minute since I did one of these, but in a year that started with the death of a legend , and saw music infrastructure fracture even further into hyper-niche corners, I found myself more engaged than I’ve been in a while with new rap. Maybe the sheer impossibility of staying on top of everything freed me up to just hear what I hear and rock with what I like, or maybe I just finally burnt myself out playing Starlito tapes on repeat and needed something to switch it up with, but picking 50 was actually kinda tricky. Who knew?

Fuse Story
When my grandma died, I felt exceedingly disconnected at her funeral. She meant more than I could explain in words, but I could not find the feelings within me to cry for her. As everyone around me displayed their immense feelings of grief, I sat still, staring up at the seemingly unending ceiling of the church. I felt sad, yet not nearly as sad as everyone around me appeared to be. It was an out of body experience, one that made me feel discordant with the harmonious feeling of grief I sensed around me. I was able to understand that I was out of place, but was unable to fully relate to the feelings of the people in the room. At the time I was only 9, and leaving the funeral without crying left me feeling shameful and unfulfilled. Situations like these have followed me throughout my life. For a long time, it was incredibly hard for me to form close bonds. To me, it felt like I had to understand what someone was feeling in order to relate to them, and the fact that I couldn’t was frustrating. How was I to form close relationships with people if I couldn’t even understand their feelings? With no way of learning to understand the complex emotions that people feel yet struggle to explain, the accumulation of my frustration to fully relate to people slowly started to leave me feeling hopeless. The thought that I may have to go my entire life without making a single meaningful connection never left my mind, and I truly feared that I was doomed to live an unfulfilling life. However, It was at the lowest point in my life that I finally found what I needed to lift myself back up: music. I always had a soft spot for music, but at a certain point found myself writing entire essays about songs that felt special to me. Little did I know, this hobby I picked up on a whim would go on to save my life.
About 5 years after the death of my grandmother, my grasp on life was slowly leaving me. I felt no reason to go on living if I would never be able to connect with anyone. It was at this same time that I finally was able to cry for my grandmother, and due solely to an experience with music. My hobby of listening to music had led me to David Bowie, and hearing his ghastly voice reminisce on his inevitable death on his song Lazarus allowed me to think about death in a way that I never had the ability to previously. Up to that point, I had never had a way of gaining a new perspective. Everything I knew was limited to my own knowledge of my emotions, and I had no way of extending my knowledge past that. It was at this exact moment that I started to feel a glimmer of hope, one that felt almost foreign to me because of how long it had been since I last felt it. Music provided me with a way to supplement certain emotions by giving me something to relate that complex feeling to. I had never understood the concept of grief and death, but hearing Lazarus gave me an idea of what it feels like to be dying, and how permanent death really is. I cried for hours that day, but it felt like I had finally fulfilled the feelings of my 9 year old self. For the first time, I felt genuine excitement at the prospect of trying to connect with people. It was a moment defined by death and sadness, and yet it became the very thing that convinced me of the potential for happiness in life, along with the subsequent value of it .
below is a write up I did on a song ("Azucar" by Earl Sweatshirt), that deals with a very similar topic.
