When a quiet New Year's Eve at home turns into something more, a simple evening of celebration becomes a whirlwind of passion and mischief. Inspired by @scoonsalicious' characters Pocket and Bucky Barnes and the following instagram reel.
This story is written with the full support of @scoonsalicious, who has kindly given me permission to bring her beloved characters Pocket and Bucky to life in this fan fic of her fan fic.
Word count: 1k
A/N: If anyone hasn't read @scoonsalicious' story Unwanted, I suggest you get on it. Stat! Happy New Year, bestie!
The New York skyline glittered through the apartmentâs expansive windows, the dark sky littered with multicolored explosions in preparation for the upcoming occasion. Inside, the living room was warm and cozy, Christmas decorations giving the room a festive feel. You were sitting cross-legged on one side of the couch, with one hand wrapped around a steaming mug of hot chocolate spiked with a very healthy dose of Baileys.
It was close to midnight and Bucky was sprawled across the other side of the couch watching you tapping at a tablet. He was wearing a dark Henley and those sweatpants which hung at the perfect place on his hips and left very little to the imagination. You liked to think of them as his seduction pants. You were pretty comfortable in your oversize Stark Industries hoodie and booty shorts, while your pink fuzzy socks kept your feet warm.
Out of the corner of your eye, you could see Bucky making facesâ his lips twitching, furrowed brows, a small smirk now and again, his gaze flicking between you and the television while he flipped through every television channel available to mankind as though he was enduring some kind of punishment.
âAny luck?â you asked without looking up from your screen.
âNope,â he replied, pounding the same button on the remote over and over. âIs it some kind of requirement for all New Yearâs Eve shows to be either obnoxiously loud or painfully boring?â
âAbsolutely,â you said with a smirk.
âYou gonna work all night?â he asked with a pout. âNot very festive of Stark. Or is this punishment because I didnât want to go to his party?â
You smiled, reaching out to tickle his toes. âJust tweaking some Stark satellite code. I told Tony Iâd do it. Donât want the world to be unprotected because we were all celebrating.â
Bucky rolled his eyes. âBut this is supposed to be our downtime?â
âI know, Buck.â You clicked off the tablet and placed it to the side. âSee, no more work. You have my full attention now, Barnes. Whatâre our plans for New Yearâs?â
Bucky shrugged petulantly, still mad that you had chosen to do Tony a favor over being bored with him.
You grabbed his foot and wiggled it from side to side. âCome on, Iâm all yours now. How about we watch the ball drop in Times Square. Pretty traditional. Fireworks, confetti, overhyped countdownâŠâ
Bucky didnât even look up from the channel surfing, letting out an unimpressed grunt. âIâd rather wrestle a grizzly bear than deal with that chaos. What do people get out of this ridiculous tradition? Itâs slow, pointless and everyone just pretends theyâre having a good time.â
You raised an eyebrow, while stirring your hot chocolate with a candy cane, slowly putting it in your mouth and sucking on the end. âYouâve got very strong opinions for someone whoâs never actually done it.â
The deadpan look in Buckyâs blue eyes as he turned to you, made you laugh out loud. âWhy does anyone need to experience this hell? Freezing weather, drunk strangers, waiting for hours for what? That thing moves as slow as molasses.â
âWow! Slow down there, New Yearâs Grinch.â
âNot a grinch,â he countered. âI just have higher standards and I didnât really want to go outside.â
âWell I was just suggesting we watch it on television,â you laughed at Buckyâs embarrassed expression. âDid you know some places drop other things instead of a ball?â
That got his attention. âLike what?â
âLetâs see,â you began, counting off on your fingers. âIdaho drops a potato. Georgia drops a peach. California does a grape. And my personal favorite, in Tucson, Arizona, they drop a Taco Bell sign.â
Bucky blinked in astonishment. âA Taco Bell sign? Seriously?â he laughed.
You nodded, grinning. âI feel like that one has the most energy. Can you imagine? Midnight, fireworks, and the crowd going wild for tacos.â
Bucky shook his head but he was still smiling. âFine, Iâll give you that. Better than a disco ball.â
âOkay,â you said, setting down your mug with a smirk. âSince weâre not into Times Square or Taco Bell. Youâre looking for something higher paced, so how about we start our own tradition?â
âOh?â Bucky raised his eyebrows with curiosity. âWhat did you have in mind?â
You leaned back, stretching your arms up over your head before placing them behind your head and stretching out your legs. âHmm,â you hummed, pretending to mull things over. âSomething a little more simple. Champagne. No crowds. Just you and me.â
Buckyâs lips curled into a slow, wicked grin that sent heat pooling into your stomach. âIâm listening.â
âOh are you now?â
Bucky shuffled closer, his hand snaking over your shoulders as he leaned toward you. His voice had taken on that warm, gravelly tone that made your heart flutter. âYeah, sweets. Youâve definitely got my attention.â
âWell,â you said, leaning toward him, your faces now just inches apart. âMidnightâs coming fast, Barnes. Instead of watching the ball drop⊠how about we make my panties drop at midnight?â
âNow that is a tradition I can get behind,â he said, his eyes gleaming with roguishness.
Laughing you moved forward until your noses brushed against each other. âGood, because midnightâs in ten minutes, Sarge.â
âYou think I need whole ten minutes to get your panties off?â
âConfident, arenât we?â You rolled your eyes.
âJust stating facts,â he murmured, as his fingers brushed against your thigh, sending a thrill up your spine.
You leaned closer, brushing your lips against his just enough to tease him. âGuess weâll find out soon enough.â
His hands tightened around your waist, pulling you into his lap in one smooth motion. âWe sure will,â he said, the challenge clear in his voice as the seconds ticked closer to midnight.
âConfident, arenât we?â you teased.
He had every right to be, he had you stripped of your panties within seconds and was thrusting inside you within minutes.
âHave I ever told you how brilliant you are, sweets?â
âYeah, but I wonât mind hearing it again.â
The sound of fireworks outside blurred into the background as Bucky had you screaming his name on the stroke of midnight.

Evan Peters x Actress!reader
summary: Evan is your boyfriend, but has been hesitant lately about showing you off.
word count: 658
a/n: this is not my best work, i just had the itch to write, so bear with me. criticism and suggestions are welcome <3
warnings: none!
You and Evan had been seeing each other for a few months now, under the radar. It started as a coffee date after a chemistry read, where you were casted as a couple in an upcoming movie. You had hit it off pretty well, and one thing led to another.
It was four months in, and it was getting harder and harder to hide. Your urges to soft launch him on your story were strong, but not as strong as your loyalty to Evan. You would have to talk to him about it first.
âHey, Ev?â You ask, lifting your head from his chest. The two of you were sitting on his couch, curled into blankets, watching one of those cheesy Hallmark movies. He hums in response, taking a second to tear his eyes from the screen. âWhat do you think of me maybe posting you just on my Instagram story?â You offer, sitting up a bit more to sit face to face.
Evan paused, clearly not expecting that question. He lets out a prolonged âUhhâ for a second, grabbing the remote to pause the TV. âI mean, I donât know,â he says eventually, scratching the back of his head in thought.
âNot anything super serious. JustâŠa soft launch.â You say, watching his expression as it sticks. âI just feel like itâs been long enough. Yâknow?â
He hums at that, clearing his throat. âI thought we were gonna wait until after the show aired.â Evan looks at you fully then, making eye contact with you. It sticks for a moment, an unvoiced conversation happening between the two of you.
You deflate, seeing the hesitance in his eyes. âListen..â He comforts softly, pulling you close again. âI know. Itâs easy to jump right into showing each other off when we like each other so much, but Iâve been burned before. Iâm not saying I donât believe in us, I just think we should wait. Okay?â He explains, hand slowly running up and down your arm.
Part of you wants to lash out. Yell about how heâs not proud of you, and he doesnât deserve you. But that small part of you understands. You werenât just normal people. Relationships were a big deal in this industry, and had to be passed around carefully. Luckily, that part took hold as you relaxed into his side. âOkay,â you whisper, nodding and returning to your position on his chest. He reaches for the remote and the movie resumes, gaining your full attention once more.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Today marked the six month anniversary of you and Evanâs relationship. Half a year may not seem like a big deal to most adult relationships, but to you two, it was something to celebrate. Your TV show had just come out, it was getting great ratings, the two of you were scheduling interview after interview. This was your excuse to be alone.
Evan had made a reservation at a fairly fancy restaurant, telling you to dress your best. You spent at least two hours getting dolled up, and maybe matching your outfit to the color of his suit.
When you two arrived, you were seated immediately. It was a beautiful, dimly lit restaurant with off-white linen tablecloths. The prices were nowhere to be found on the menu, which is how you really knew it was bad.
Before you could think about it any further, you heard the click of Evanâs phone camera. You look up, seeing your boyfriend smiling at his phone, solidifying your theory.
âDid you just take a picture of me?â You ask, watching him tuck his phone away.
âMaybe. Is that a problem?â He teased, picking his glass up to sip his wine.
âI suppose not,â You chuckle. âWho are you sending that to?â
âYouâll see.â

From @niffler-gold
From @niffler-gold to @mariashades
3 prompts:
Cosy warm and safe
As many or as few of the family as will fit into the storyÂ
A peaceful moment among the hectic
Scott jumped as a snowball hit him square in the face splattering ice cold droplets down the neck of his uniform. Â He turned glowering trying to locate the culprit. He didnât have to look very far as there was Gordon a second snowball ready in his hand with Alan next to him bent over laughing. That was the straw that broke the camelâs back. He began furiously yelling at them, going on and on about how they were at a rescue site and they didnât need this kind of tom foolery to add to the mess and how they couldnât ever listen or follow the simplest of orders. By this point Gordonâs mouth was hanging open in shock and the second snowball lay discarded at his feet, Alan behind him was on the verge of tears. John was furiously trying to get through his com to try and calm him but it took a huge bear screaming âScottâ to get him to stop. Virgil had come around the back of two to find out what all the noise was about to see the sight of Scott absolutely tearing into the tinies.
That seemed to shock Scott out of it as he stopped mid-sentence. Vigil spoke once more in a loud growl. âWhy are you yelling at them like that, actually donât answer that, youâve been in a bad mood all week but it gives you no right to speak to them in that way.â Scott turned away from them all took in a long breath and spat out âpack it up, were going home.â
Virgil walked to check on the younger two as Scott walked away from them back to thunderbird one without looking back. No one saw the tears escaping from Scottâs eyes as he walked. Virgil immediately jumped into medic mode crouching in front of Gordon to make sure he was okay. âYou okay he askedâ. âWhatâs his problemâ, questioned Gordon, âitâs Christmas Eve and all I was trying to do was lighten the moodâ. âI donât know Gordon, I really donât know I know itâs been a heavy week for rescues but this is odd even for him. John chose that moment to interject âheâs been getting more and more worked up all week, but even in the past no matter how bad heâs gotten heâs never snapped like this, especially not at Gordon and Alanâ.
Scott flew home mentally berating himself for losing his temper on his younger brothers, just one more problem to add to his ever growing list of disasters. He could count on one hand the number of hours of sleep he had gotten this week due to rescues and ever growing problems at Tracy industries due to the end of the year. And to top it all off news articles had decided to swarm him critiquing his every move in the past eight years since his father had disappeared, down to how he ran Tracy industries to his command role in international rescue and even worse was how he was a parent to his siblings. Slow news week john had told him over coms, which was laughable in itself considering how many rescues they seemed to be attending this week. A few more tears escaped Scottâs eyes as he tried to figure out how he was going to make it up to his brothers after his outburst. But the fact was he simply just didnât have the time and on top of everything he still had to organize Christmas for his brothers. Ever since his dad had disappeared the job of filling up his brothers stockings and getting them gifts was up to him.
As soon as one was in her docking bay Scott normally would be up and out but not today. He just sat there his mind racing with a hundred thousand different thoughts of what he needed to do. He didnât even register the sound of two landing and rolling herself into the hangar thirty minutes later.
Gordon, Alan, Virgil, and john had come up with a plan on their way home to get Scott talking to them and find out what was wrong. Knowing Scott he would be at the desk writing up the report from the dayâs rescue they planned to talk to him there and get him to put his feet up for a bit and relax as it was Christmas after all. Once they all finally found their way into the comâs room though they were shocked to find it empty except john sitting all alone. âHeâs not hereâ exclaimed Gordon. âYou mean he wasnât still down in the showers with youâ questioned john. This wasnât normal at all. The first thing Scott did not matter what if he had an argument was to find the said brother and apologise, or would wait for them by the desk so he could make sure they were okay. This definitely was not normal at all.
John walked up to the desk and pulled up a map of the villa and hangars, âheâs still in oneâ he announced quietly, that sent alarm bells ringing for all the brothers. John sat down at the desk and quietly began tapping keys on the control panel. âWhat are you doingâ asked Alan nervously. âGetting to the bottom of whatâs going onâ he replied, none of the brothers said anything as they rounded the desk to see what john would find. It was an unwritten rule of the household not to snoop into each otherâs computers, but they needed to find out what the hell was going on. Almost immediately nearly 200 documents opened on Scottâs page, ranging from end of year TI documents to GDF documents concerning IR, to horrific news articles being published about their older brother dating from this week. The brothers looked on in horror as they stared at the mountain that was on top of their brother. âNo wonder he was tenseâ, remarked Alan. Whatâs this asked Virgil clicking on a document marked Christmas? In here they found a document with each of their brotherâs names and a detailed plan of surprising them on Christmas morning with gifts and personal experiences to make a glorious day. âShitâ said Gordon. âShit indeedâ whispered john. âWe need to fix thisâ Virgil stated. And from there a plan was hatched.
Scott didnât know how long he sat there for; all he knew was tears kept creeping down his face every so often. It wasnât until a large bang went off he even knew where he was. With his heart racing he smashed the button to disembark from the craft and was running in seconds to the source of the noise. He tried calling his brothers over coms to see if they were all right but no one picked up. He skidded into the kitchen to see Gordon holding two large pans next to johnâs com which he was holding out to Gordon. The rest of the brothers were also there standing in a line in the most fluffy Christmas pyjamas he had ever seen. Scott stood there frozen in front of them with red eyes from crying and the tear tracks still visible on his face. Virgil walked forward and pulled him into the biggest most bone crushing hug he had ever given anyone before. Scott just shrunk into him letting himself feel small against the huge fluffy arms that held him up. Next thing he knew he had a small Alan squeezing in-between them snuggling up against him. He fell to the floor cuddling the giant teddy bear that was his younger brother whispering how sorry he was continually into his ear. Next he knew Gordon was on the other side of him snuggling in as well telling him to stop being such a dafty. Virgil had kept his arms around Scott as he had sat down and now had John helping him hug his brother on the floor as well. Not one of the brothers could tell you how long they stayed liked that only that none of them wanted to be the first to break the cuddle pile. Eventually Scott sat up straighter though and whispered a thank you to all of them. Only then did they begin to let go. Alan told him to go get a shower and to meet them upstairs as they had a surprise for him.
When Scott got out of the shower he was delighted to find a pair of matching fluffy pyjamas waiting for him. He threw them on and went to find the rest of the family who were already sitting together in a pile of blankets and cushions with big mugs of hot chocolate. He saw that a mug was waiting for him on the side and picked it up. As soon as the brothers saw him they moved aside to let him into the middle of the cushion and blanket pile and as he sat down his brothers cuddled up to him and his favourite holiday movie began playing, Klaus. Before the movie began properly though john handed him his data holopad and whispered âmerry Christmas Scottâ. He opened it to find every job on it was either completed or delegated to the right person, every news article bad mouthing him and also seemed to have disappeared as well. The only thing open was his file marked Christmas. He opened it to find a blank document with only 4 words. Enjoy your Christmas Scott. It was signed by each of his brother, and a cheeky AI which is how he presumed all of the news articles had gone missing but he wasnât going to poke around to find out.
He sat back sipping his hot chocolate feeling happier than he had done in a long time. He really did have the best brothers ever he thought as he slowly drifted off to sleep. He awoke early the next morning to find all of his brothers still firmly asleep next to him, he smiled to himself as he relished being in a cosy cuddle pile (even if Gordon was drooling onto his foot). Just then a call came through from Eos waking the rest of the brothers up. Less than 10 minutes later they were all on their way to help dig out a small (and by small I mean like 3 houses max) village at the base of a mountain. They all decided to go to make it quicker and since it was Christmas they wanted to spend the time together even if it was on a rescue.
With the heavy snow lifting power of thunderbird two they were finished within 30 minutes. They were just packing up and stretching before heading back home to open presents when a giant snowball pummelled Gordon right in the face. He wiped the snow from his eyes to see Scott bent over double laughing with hysterics. He hadnât even had a chance to blink when the back of Scottâs head was smashed by another snowball. Scott straightened up and turned around to see john standing all innocently chucking a snowball with one hand and catching it. He sees Scott looking at him with a look of bewilderment on his face and winks at him and chucks the snowball in his hand hitting Alan perfectly square in his face. From there all five brothers began attacking each other with snow balls. No one was safe. Soon some of the small children from the houses peeked out to see what was happening and began joining in. In the end it was all out war with the brothers teaming up and facing off against the whole village, snowballs were flying everywhere. In the end Scott had to call it off as some of the children and his brothers had begun to turn blue with the cold. It was safe to say this defiantly wasnât going to be a Christmas that Scott ever forgot. (Especially since john had managed to access thunderbirds two outside video feed that had recorded the entire event and had a picture hanging in the hallway of an astonished snow covered Gordon.) Yes, this was definitely one great Christmas.

Guys, the music industry is very complex and competitive. Things don't always go as planned, and saying Louise "can't find a label" is oversimplifying things. Many factors influence an artist's success, and not all of them are within their control. She mentioned in her comment that she faced problems in France specifically because there are many challenges for independent artists like her who struggle to make a significant impact and gain proper recognition for their efforts in the music industry //
This is gonna be a long comment so bear with me.
You cannot compare Louise with actual independent artists. Those artists are releasing songs and taking gigs whenever they can. They know that the music industry is competitive so whenever they get an opportunity to further their career, they take it. Whether itâs through uploading songs on SoundCloud or YouTube or playing in random bars, they are continuously working.
Louise doesnât do any of this. She competed on The Voice in 2012 (over 12 years ago) and even though she didnât win, she still managed to make it to episode 10 and was mentored by Louis Bertignac, one of the most successful musicians in France. Bertignac had previously helped produce and write Carla Brunoâs debut album which was very successful in France. Louise was given the opportunity to record an album with Bertignac and what did she do with that opportunity? She decided not to continue on with the album because she said it wasnât true to herself (kinda funny for someone whoâs based her entire persona around Jane Birkin but whatever). Now, this by itself isnât so bad. There are many artists who refuse to release music that they feel isnât true to themselves. Thatâs perfectly fine. The difference between Louise and these artists is that they continue working on music unlike Louise.
Her debut single was finally released in December 2018 (5 years after The Voice), just months after she started dating Alex. This was the one time in her career where she actually did something right. She was dating a the frontman of a very popular band and their relationship was still new at the time so she had eyes on her. It was the perfect timing and she took advantage of that and was actually productive for once in her career. She released an EP in June 2019 and then her debut album in April 2020. She also did something performances during this time as well.
But that was the last time she ever did anything music related. Itâs been over four years since the album and sheâs released nothing and, in 2022, she got dropped by her label. To be fair, four years isnât that long for an artist to not release an album. AM did it, Lorde did it, Frank Ocean is currently doing it, etc. But the difference between Louise and these artists is that theyâre still doing something music-related in between albums. Whether itâs releasing standalone singles or performing.
During the time between AM and TBHAC, the band went on tour and headlined Leeds festival in 2014, Alex worked on TLSPâs second album EYCTE which was released in 2016, TLSP appeared on various talk shows like Seth Meyers and James Corden while promoting the album, they performed at multiple festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and many more from 2016-2017, Matt played drums on an Iggy Pop album (recorded in 2015, released in 2016), Alex worked on Alexandra Saviorâs debut album (which they recorded from 2014-2015, performed in 2016, and was released in 2017), the band started working on TBHC in 2017, released the album in 2018 and performed at multiple festivals right after.
Even during a five year hiatus between AM albums, Alex was still working unlike Louise whoâs basically been an influencer (and even thatâs stretching it because pretty much all of her followers and âfansâ are Alex fans) since 2020, not a musician. Obviously heâs gonna have way more opportunities than she does but itâs not like thereâs nothing she can do. She couldâve released standalone singles or even covers during that time. They donât even have to be official recordings, she couldâve filmed a short clip of her singing something (a demo, a cover, literally whatever) and uploaded it on her Instagram. She couldâve performed at local venues and slowly build her way up to bigger gigs. She couldâve posted song lyrics she wrote.
These are all things independent musicians do. They know that they have to seize every single opportunity they get and continuously promote themselves in order to even have a chance of getting their big break. They work hard because they need to. Louise was lucky enough to be able to rely on Alex for everything (which is just plain stupid) so she no longer has to work for anything. This is why she fumbles every opportunity she gets (like that one brand she got a sponsorship deal with which she eventually lost because couldnât even do the bare minimum of promoting them properly. Actual indie musicians would kill for this and she just fumbles it). She has no incentive to work hard and this is why no one will ever take her seriously as a musician.
Exactly.

ASH TREE EXTINCTION
Emerald ash borer beetles are destroying North American ash tree populations. In a matter of a couple decades, the bugs have reduced ash numbers to a fraction of what they were. âFunctionalâ extinction, meaning extinct outside of human intervention, is imminent for the ash trees of the upper Midwestâand soon, for ash trees everywhere. For a couple hundred bucks a pop, ash trees can be inoculated against the bugsâmeaning, with the proper funding and man power, they could be saved. However, the state isnât even considering the option. Some restrictions have been put in place to minimize the spread of the beetle, but itâs apparent local governments have no intention of shifting efforts from slowing the extinction to an attempt to save the North American ash tree.
It's a shame, considering the spending habits and rhetoric of such a nihilistic government. Every week, millions of dollars are vomited up from the stateâs coffers to fund vague corporate-washed âsustainabilityâ initiatives. Most of it serves as little but market bucks to give the state or its private cronies an environmentally friendly sheen. Meanwhile hundreds of millions more are gobbled up in subsidies for massive energy companies who continue to profit from fossil fuels. New cobalt and rare earth mining operations receive federal greenlights in the name of a supposedly âsustainableâ EV industry. The sustainability industry, claiming to be saviors of the earth and its critters, is quite literally letting a whole species of tree die off despite a clear path to successâat a fraction of the fraction of the cost spent to spread âawarenessâ about things like biodiversity loss. In 2022 alone, the Biden administration set aside something like 44 billion to âtackle the climate crisisâ.
In comparison, the state of Minnesota has set aside something like 2 to 3 million to protect ash trees from emerald borers, apparently through âcommunity forestry activities on public landsâ. The same bureaucrats coughing up 3 million to stop the very real extinction of our ash trees are expected to hurl up 17.5 billion for all those beautifully vague âsustainabilityâ initiatives.
Iâd have to guess a great deal of these initiatives include the creation of new financial opportunities for these bureaucrats in ways that killing emerald borers and inoculating ash trees just canât. If the black ash or mountain ash controlled a share of the energy market and had a small army of lobbyists on their payroll, they might be lucky enough to be made the poster child of the great climate crisis, lucky enough to receive even a shred of the publicity that Greta Thunberg or the countless pretty teenagers crowding the âclimate crisisâ get all the time.
Every now and then, the environmentalists throw actual Wilderness a bone. Probably by accident. A glacier, usually. Glaciers and polar bearsâeven then, some pretty teenager is always there to devour the microphone.
New generations are growing up with peers suffering from âclimate anxietyâ and uncles and aunts dying from âclimate relatedâ causes. Millions of Americans will call themselves environmentalists without having spent a night in wilderness, some without having ever really seen the stars. This is how multinational corporations will seize the new markets of the 21st century, developing more wilderness and farmlands than ever before, as American consumers convince themselves their Tesla is atonement enough.

The Music in the Dark - A christmas fanfiction of âThe Long Darkâ
I read an article once. It said that if scientists were to ever succeed in reanimating a brain, it would be really unethical, cause it would experience all the pain of being detached from its body, and partially decomposed. Thatâs one of the big problems of bringing animals, or people, back to life. Some damage is inevitable, especially inside, and youâd wake up to that. Kicking and screaming, no grip on your own senses. I always think of a dead pigâs head, eyes wide open, jaws stammering, trying to squeal but with no lungs to breathe, and having some kinda seizure from the brain damage.
Well, thatâs what happens to all the electricals when the aurora hits. The artifacts of the industrial age arenât allowed to sleep - theyâre forced back to life. Lights flickering, motors whirring pointlessly, wires crackling and sparking, exposed like muscles where their rubber is slashed open. I guess I speak for everyone still alive on earth when I say that itâs a terrible reminder of what was lost, of the times we used to have when we had supermarkets, electric heating and running water. Technology opening its eyes and screaming with a mad look in its eye, being tortured in its botched reanimation, all around you in the middle of the night.
Point is, an aurora hit on the night of Christmas Eve in 1998. I was hunkered in my safehouse on Great Bear Island in one of the buildings near Mystery Lake, a former tourist campsite. I was only vaguely aware it was meant to be Christmas, but I didnât pay it much mind. When thereâs no-one to talk to and you can never get too comfortable, thereâs no use for festivities anymore. I didnât think so anyway. Every day had been snowy for the past three months already, so I didnât find the snow outside particularly beautiful or romantic. I was sipping rosehip tea, curling up in front of the stove, as usual, thinking about the work that needed doing tomorrow. Then the aurora hit. The lights stuttered in my face, and the radio flipped on, spewing a gargled static. It sounded like there were hints of human voices in there, but I thought that was just in my head. I shuffled over to the radio and fiddled with the knobs, just to see what would happen, then I found the music. Weirdly, there was often music on the radio, and I never figured out why. I donât really know how it all works. It was always some quiet classical stuff. I thought it was some automated thing, but this time the playlist was different.
Christmas music. I sat down and listened for a while. The classics, âWhite Christmasâ and such, in slow, gentle jazz. Things I hadnât heard in a while. I realised where I should have been. Back home in Vancouver, with my family - Mom, Dad, Ellie. Warm colours flashed through my mind. Cushy sofas. Good food. Roast meats, potatoes, desserts and stuff. People laughing and singing. Uncle Peter and his kids coming in, stamping off the snow and taking off their jackets, bearing gifts. I doubted there was much generosity left in the world anymore. I didnât want to think about what the Blackout did to the cities. I didnât think Iâd ever know if anyone I knew was still alive or where they were. I thought I made peace with this months ago, but the music dragged it all up to the surface again.
I broke down sobbing, and I got angry. Angry with the world for doing this to me, angry with the radio for mocking me. I was ready to throw it to the floor and wreck it. I didnât want to think about the times before. All that ever gave me was pain, and distracted me from what was in front of me - a bleak future of isolation at the frozen end of the world, where only my sheer wits, skills and determination saw me to the next day. Sentimentality wouldnât put food in my mouth or wood in the fire. I raised my fist, but just as I was about to bring it down on the machine, the song changed abruptly. I wasnât sure what the song was, but thatâs irrelevant - what was important is that the radio behaved like there was someone on the other side, a DJ.
Someone, I decided, must have been in control of the radio music. Maybe they had reasons to never talk, but that meant that whenever conditions allowed, someone was spending their time sitting in a radio station, broadcasting music to everyone who could listen. And thatâs the closest thing I had to contact with another person for a whole year. Not a frozen corpse, not the blood-stained scrawlings of people getting ready to die, not the characters in the books, but someone, today, comfortable or crazy enough to spend their time in a radio station. I realised I had been pessimistic. Christmas is still alive. My family may still be alive.
I will build a boat next summer. But for now, I will sit inside by the fire at night, with the snow falling out the window, waiting for another chance to listen to the radio, reaching out across the miles in togetherness. If my fire can be a light in the dark, so can the fires of other people all over Canada, and the world.
#the long dark#I was very inspired to write this when alone in the house listening to xmas music in the kitchen#I've been playing a lot more TLD lately. Zone of Contamination is a shithole and I can't wait to finish the tale and leave.#I miss Mystery Lake

SORRY FOR ALL THE ASKS BUT, along with deco and Eve, I've been having MASSIVE Aishire ( and overall industrial district ) brainrot, and I was wondering if I could get more on Aishires personality. She's just so interesting, TDYFHRJRKYKH. I LOVE HIM SMM ( probably my favorite corphead )đđđđ
-paris anon
YOU'RE GOOD!! I LOVE ANSWERING ASKS ^_^ I'M GLAD YOU LOVE HIM SO MUCH.... my little freaklet
aishire suppresses a lot, and I do mean a lot, of his emotions from general distrust of everyone
she's just. very paranoid in general, she hates the idea of getting hurt and dying (yet she will make sure others are beaten to death). she's just afraid everyone she's hurt in the past will come back and make her repent and so she makes sure no one can do that to her
generally she's also pretty obsessive and as a result hardworking, but it genuinely is destructive towards her own body, health, and mind (only really deepens her paranoia) and when she's most overworked she makes the most rash decisions (like making a fucking killing game show with her former employees yeah that's such a good idea aishire)
HOWEVER. ONE GOOD THING ABOUT AISHIRE IS THAT SHE IS ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED AND A GENUINE GENIUS. she's made hundreds of robots, all better than the last (doesn't help with that obsession part lol) and she's progressed technology almost single handedly in novaturient.
her robots are a coping mechanism, she originally created the bear robot to be her companion when no one else was
i didn't mean for her to seem like such a shut in esp with all her weirdgirl tendencies and hobbies lol but it is what it is

Ruby Beach
In response to Eve Tuck's essay "What Is Your Theory of Change These Days?" (link here)
November afternoon, warm sun slanting through wind-sheared Douglas-fir, pungent seaweed and cedar aloft on salty breeze. I watch gray fog on the far horizon, somewhere out over the continental shelf, stretching as far north and south as I can see. The wind plays with the fog. It billows this way and that, like bellows on a fire, like inhalations and exhalations. Chatter of Stellerâs jays and human children mingles with crash of waves twice my height, too tall to bear their own weight. The beach collects driftwood. Elderly trees felled and eroded then returned to the land, bark and cork stripped, sensitive innards salinated, outer layers gray with sunburn.
I have been here before.
March 2020. My girlfriend Sammy and I are removed from student housing to return to our âpermanent homes.â We have nowhere else to go, nowhere safe; Juneau is our permanent home. Our car barely survives the trek down the Alaska Highway. We are forced into my parentsâ house in rural Colorado. It stands in the middle of a recently razed forest. They hope prairie fire will prove easier to fight than forest fire in the increasingly dry, combustible summers. My body is rounding out and reorganizing from the effects of potent estradiol and antiandrogens; I am just beginning to understand that male and cis privilege were never mine. My parentsâ fear of my new body fuels hot and sudden fights. My parents are more dangerous than the virus.
We escape with little more than a backpack each and a car on its last legs. We turn our eyes northwest, as near to Juneau as we can get, Bellingham, Washington, searching for jobs and housing at a time when the world is shut down. We occupy ourselves with day trips as our funds dwindle. Even the entrance gates to Ruby Beach are closed. We park on the shoulder of the 101 and climb over them. The tide is out, and crows play in wind currents above the muddy beach. It is cloudy, the ocean a deep slate color, darker even than the driftwood that dwells on the beach. Strong winds threaten to topple older trees into the sea. Here, in old growth forest, taller trees protect younger, shorter ones. When trees do fall, they become nurse logs. Saplings grow from centuries-old nutrients held in xylem and phloem. In deforested or reforested areas, entire hectares account for just one generation of trees and a single Pacific storm can blow over the whole forest. The wind here is constant, a limiting factor, a factor of death and regrowth.
The head gasket blows; we sell the car for $400. We spend a month saving for a U-haul and a security deposit to a shitty studio on the eighth floor of the tallest building for 900 miles around. But itâs in Juneau. So we return.
September 2021. My parents convince Sammy and I we can get better jobs Down South than in Juneau, where the ecotourism industry is still closed for the pandemic. It is soon obvious that they have invited us not out of goodwill, but out of spite, for the lack of control they have over our lives. They try to regain it, keeping us close in this too-familiar small town.
Jobs here are slim. The closest work we can find is twenty miles away; we spend the last of our savings on a down payment for a new-to-us car. We fight with my parents as much as we work. Wildfires burn in the Front Range, pines and willows scorched, leaving the landscape ripe for fertilization. Lodgepole pines and wildflowers germinate in the temporary heat. Still, scientists and locals call it âunnatural,â âunprecedented.â Smoke chokes prairies and reddens sunsets. Savings replenish until, one day, our bed and the roof over our heads are removed. As the rest of the world convinces itself itâs âgoing back to normal,â we realize that normal is not static. Unlike Juneau, it is not something to which one can ever return.
We work the gig economy south, following warmth, spending months driving through unfamiliar cities, delivering groceries and fast food to mansions and high-rises, sleeping in stiff sedan seats. I lapse on my medication, an unecessary expense in this time. I am faced with the abandonment of my parents, the threat of homelessness, the mental instability of forced detransition. Eight months I will go without it, body hair and anger sprouting where they hadnât before. Finally, we have enough to buy a ferry ticket out of Bellingham. We follow the Mexican border west, then the Pacific Ocean north.
The first day of the new year. Snowclouds vacate the sky. Everything is fresh, as if reconstructed overnight. Waves are calm, lapping the snow on Ruby Beach, melting it as the tide comes in. I feel worn, hollow, surprised I am not as gray and eroded as the dead cedar and spruce in front of me. Each gnarled tree is longer than a bus. I cannot imagine the length of time they spent at sea, the process of erosion they underwent. I cannot imagine the splash of one of these trees into the sea after it succumbs to centuries of constant, cold wind. We continue northward, towards Juneau.
November 2023. Ocean wind is quiet and soft on my face. Sammy and I are in another Washington interlude, another time spent Down South and waiting for return to Juneau. For the first time, however, we have savings, a one-bedroom. For the first time, it is of our own accord that we have left. Seattle promises career advancements, a way to find stability, a way not to tumble over in the Juneau winds, blowing stronger in recent years. We sit together on the remains of a Sitka spruce, at least four feet in diameter, smooth and gray. We watch the waves collapse on themselves, watch the fog roll in.

eve's masterlist // thatâs so evie
âHello, everyone!â Eve greeted the front camera from behind the kitchen counter. âWelcome to the first episode of Thatâs So Evie!â The staff members in the room clapped and cheered. âYouâre probably very shocked to see this show, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. Today, we are at ABC Cooking Studio, this is actually where I come whenever I want to bake and the owner was gracious enough to let me use this room. Iâm a little bit nervous since itâs my first time doing this type of interviewing, but Iâm going to try my best to do a good job for not only the fans, but also my interviewees.â
She clapped her hands once. âOkay, should we introduce todayâs guest? Theyâre a supergroup that keep making their mark in the music industry, STAYC!â
There were cheers as Yoon and Seeun walked into the frame.
âHello,â both girls greeted, bowing to Eve.
âHi!â Eve responded.
[Teen fresh and girl crush, what to choose? STAYCâs teen crush, of course! Debuted November 12, 2020. Now three years into their career with hit songs!]
[STAYC's angel vocalist, in charge of aegyo, Seeun!]
[Lead vocalist and variety queen, with a humour that rivals even the best comedian, Yoon!]
âPlease introduce yourselves to the viewers,â Eve instructed.
âTwo, three,â Yoon counted down.
âHi, we are STAYC!â Both girls said.
Eve clapped her hands. âHello, welcome to Thatâs So Evie. Thank you for coming today.â
Yoon waved her hand dismissively. âWeâre really excited to be here!â
âWhy?â Eve asked, looking at Yoon expectantly.
âBecause weâre fans of you, sunbaenim!â
Eve scrunched her nose. âThank you. But you donât have to speak formally to me, just call me Eve, Nabi-yah or pabo-yah, whichever one you like.â
Seeun hesitated. âNâNabi-yah. Iâm sorry.â She covered her face.
âNo, no. Itâs okay, just talk to me comfortably, Seeun-shi. You can just call me unnie if thatâs what makes you comfortable.â
âThen sunbaenim can also talk to us comfortably,â Yoon said.
âOkay.â Eve nodded. âDo you know what weâll be doing today?â
The STAYC members shook their heads.
âToday, we will be baking, hence the kitchen.â She gestured at the set for the day. âSince your comeback is Teddy Bear, I thought we could make gingerbread men.â
Yoon clapped excitedly. âI like that!â
âOkay! Letâs get started.â
The girls fetched aprons and put them on before going to the kitchen counter, where the ingredients and tablet with the recipe was.
âPreheat the oven,â Eve read and looked up at the front camera. âWe have encountered our first problem. Although I bake a lot, I donât know how to use ovens,â she confessed.
Yoon spoke up. âThatâs okay, Seeun unnie knows!â
[Resourceful Seeun!]
Eve looked at Seeun, who immediately started blushing. âOh, really? Youâre a lifesaver!â
Seeun shyly shook her head as she went to turn on the oven. âNo, itâs just something I know.â
âUnnie, take the compliment,â Yoon instructed.
âOkay.â Seeun pursed her lips. She returned to the counter, standing by Yoon.
âTo make this a bit more fun and challenging,â Eve started, turning to face her two guests, âI thought we could do another thing.â
âWhat is it?â
âItâs a trend these days. The blind, deaf, mute challenge, have you heard of it?â
Seeun and Yoon shook their heads.
âSo basically, one of us will wear noise cancelling earphones so they canât hear, another will wear an eye mask so they canât see and the last person will wear tape around their mouth so they canât talk. So the deaf person has to give us the instructions, the mute person can do the things, and the blind person can be guided when doing things. Does that⊠sound okay?â
âIt sounds exciting,â Seeun said, Yoon agreeing.
âWhich one do you want?â Eve asked as a staff member brought in the different items.
âI think Seeun unnie should be the deaf on, so that way she talks a lot,â Yoon said, laughing as Seeun hit her arm.
Eve laughed as well. âIs that okay, Seeun?â
Seeun looked at Yoon and Eve. âWell⊠yes. Itâs okay.â She accepted the headphones from Eve.
âYoon, which one would you like?â
Yoon hummed in thought. âI would liââ
âYoon should have the tape,â Seeun interrupted, taking the tape and putting it in Yoonâs hand, causing the other two girls to laugh.
âIâll take the blindfold then,â Eve said. âAnd I would like to apologise for my interviewing skills, itâs my first time interviewing like this, so Iâm not used to it yet.â
âNo, itâs okay,â Yoon assured her.
âThe reason I only have you two and not the whole group is because I was worried I wouldnât do a good job, but if Iâm still doing this by the time you have another comeback, then Iâll invite all of you.â
âIs that⊠a promise?â Seeun asked.
Eve looked at Seeun for a while. âCute,â she cooed.
[Eve is falling for Seeunâs shyness]
âIt is a promise,â she answered, putting her right hand over her heart. âI, Kim Nabi, sincerely promise that if Iâm still doing whatever this is by the time STAYC has their comeback, I will interview all of the members.â
Yoon saluted her as Seeun giggled.
âShall we get started?â Eve asked, the two girls nodding in response.Â
They put on their respective props, facing each other and laughing.
âWhy are you laughing?â Eve asked, not being able to see anything. âWhatâs so funny?â
Yoon started aggressively murmuring behind the tape, the sound coming out like vibrations, moving her arms this way and that as Seeun watched with a confused expression.
âWhatâs the first thing to do?â Eve asked. Seeun looked at her, blinking innocently. Eve turned to Yoon. âIs she facing me?â Yoon murmured again. âTap once for yes, and twice for no,â she instructed, the younger girl immediately tapping once. Eve turned back to Seeun and gestured at the table with ingredients. âRecipe?âÂ
Seeun gasped. âAh, recipe?â
Eve and Yoon started nodding. Seeun checked the recipe and relayed the instructions to them.
âWhere is the pan?â Seeun asked. Eve held a finger up as she went to fetch it. In the meantime, Seeun turned to Yoon. âFetch the butter, sugar, ginger and syrup,â she instructed. Yoon looked over the table, taking the things she was instructed to. âDo the measurements.â
Yoon started measuring the sugar when Eve came back with the pan, posing with it. âIf I was still blonde, I would look like Rapunzel.â
[Posing with the pan, itâs no doubt that sheâs Evepunzel, whether sheâs blonde or not]
âWhat should I do now?â Eve asked Seeun. Yoon looked up from her work, turned Eve around so that she was facing Seeun â whilst ignoring her screams at being suddenly touched â and went back to her measurements.Â
âI feel like I should say something,â Seeun suddenly said in a shy voice. âSince Eve unnie and Yoon canât talk, I should fill in the silence.â
[Seeun has forgotten that Yoon is the only one that canât talk. Since all she can hear is the music, she assumed itâs quiet in the kitchen]
Yoon and Eve laughed to themselves as Seeun continued talking to herself whilst reading over the ingredients. Eve took a deep breath to calm herself and walked to Seeun, stretching her hands out to guide herself. Once she felt Seeunâs shoulder, she put the pan on the table.
âLeader-nim, Iâve completed my assignment,â she informed Seeun, who couldnât hear her.
âWhat is she saying?â Seeun asked the staff members.
Yoon started murmuring through her tape again, Eve turning to face her.
[It gets chaotic so suddenly]
âDid you cut yourself?â Eve asked, trying to make sense of the unintelligible sounds leaving Yoonâs mouth. Yoon shook her head and pointed at the different ingredients as Seeun went to her, noticing that Yoon was done measuring.
âYouâre done? Okay, we need to put this in the pan and put it on the stove,â Seeun said.
Yoon made an âokayâ symbol with her hands and got to putting the different ingredients in the pan. Seeun gently touched Eveâs hand and pulled her to the dry ingredients.
âUnnie, I measured the dry ingredients,â Seeun started, continuing when Eve nodded, âcan you sift them into the bowl?â
Eve made a thumbs up and felt around the table for the cup of flour. She then felt around for the bowl, Seeun directing her hands when she missed it. Eve slowly poured the flour through the sieve, shaking it side to side to speed up the process. Seeun passed her the bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger, Eve adding them to the flour bowl.
Yoon put her hand up when the butter mixture was done, calling Seeun to her side.
âThis looks good,â she commented as she took the pan to Eve.
âLet me seâ nevermind,â Eve cut herself off with a laugh, Yoon laughing with her. Seeun looked at the girls on either side of her with a confused smile on her face.
âWhy are you laughing?â She asked as Eve doubled over in laughter and fell to the floor.
[Chick Eve finds herself to be very funny]
Yoon clapped her hands as she laughed and Seeun looked at both of them before looking at the front camera. âNow, Iâm going to mix the butter into the flour,â she said.
[Seeun continues on her own as the other two laugh]
The side camera showed Yoon touch Eveâs arm to pull her off the floor, breaking into a new bout of laughter when Eve screamed at the sudden contact.
âI think this is the right consistency,â Seeun commented as she mixed the bowl after adding the egg yolk. She showed the front camera what the batter looked like. In the background, Yoon picked Eve off the floor as they finished laughing.
âLeader-nim, weâre ready toâ,â Eve said as she inhaled deeply.
âWe need to roll the dough onto the baking pan,â she told the two girls, not having heard Eve.
Eve and Yoon nodded, putting flour on the counter before placing the dough on top of it. Yoon used the rolling pin to roll the dough until it was relatively flat and Seeun brought out the cookie cutters. She took out three man cookie cutters and distributed them among themselves.
The girls got to cutting out the shape of the cookies and putting them on the baking tray after. Once they were done, Yoon put the tray in the oven and the girls took off their respective props. Yoon immediately took a deep breath.
âThat was the hardest thing Iâve ever done!â she shouted.
Seeun groaned. âYou think you suffered? I had to speak so much!â
âItâs so bright!â Eve complained with a chuckle, rubbing her eyes as she got used to the brightness of the room. They all continued to complain for a while longer. âShall we clean up?â
âYes!â Yoon cheered.
They began to put away the ingredients and wash the dishes they used, bringing out some tools to decorate their cookies.
âYou know what I just realised?â Eve asked once they were finished cleaning up.
âWhat?â Seeun asked.
âThis is the first STAYC release where I wonât be interviewing you.â
[Eve has been with STAYC since their first release So Bad until their latest one Beautiful Monster]
She continued, âAside from when I was a special MC with Sieun during the first week of promotions for Teddy Bear. Iâm never going to interview you again!â
âUnnie, what are you talking about?â Yoon asked. âOur next comeback weâll come here.â
âYouâre right! How did I forget already?â She muttered the last part to herself.
The staff gestured at the oven and the girls took the baking tray out.
âThey look so good!â Seeun exclaimed, clasping her hands in front of her.
âItâs because of Seeun that they came out so good,â Eve commented as she put the biscuits on a cooling rack.
âNo, we all made them.â
âEve unnie and I spent the second half laughing on the floor,â Yoon bluntly said. âYou made this unnie.â
Eve giggled at their interaction. Once the biscuits were done cooling, they began decorating them.
âDo you want to introduce your comeback?â Eve asked as she put icing on her biscuit.
Yoon abruptly looked up from her biscuit. âOh! I didnât even realise we hadnât talked about it! STAYC is coming back with a new single album called Teddy Bear and title track of the same name. The song contains a message of positivity that gives hope and comfort.â
âWah! Doesnât that sound fun, everyone?â Eve asked. âYou should listen to the song a lot and vote for them on music shows, okay?â
Seeun hesitantly looked at Eve. âUnnie?â
âYes?â Eve answered.
âI have a question to ask you.â
Eve added a light layer of sprinkles to her biscuit. âAsk away.â
âDo you have any advice for us?â
âIn what aspect?â Eve asked. âLike in performance orâŠâ
âFor performance, how do we give good performances every time?â
Eve hummed as she thought. âNot all your performances are going to be as good as you want. Thatâs impossible. Some performances will be better than the others, but thatâs okay, as long as you did your best. And your best can look different everyday. Say, for example, you wake up one day and youâre energetic and you⊠feel ready to take on the world. On that day, the best you can give is 100%. But on another day, you might wake up not feeling that good, you feel tired, groggy and not that motivated. The best you can give might be 32%, but thatâs still your best! So, you could be giving it your all every performance, itâs just at different levels if that makes sense?â
Seeun nodded as she piped some icing onto her biscuit. âIt does.â
âI understand why you asked that question,â Eve continued. âBecause you want to do your best for your fans, but your fans also need to remind themselves that if you arenât dancing and singing at your usual level then there might be something wrong and thatâs okay because youâre still doing your best.â
Yoon put her hand on her chest. âThat was very comforting.â She laughed as she continued working on her biscuit.Â
âWhat is your favourite STAYC song?â Seeun asked.
âMe?â Eve put two jelly tots on her biscuit. âMy favourite title track is Stereotype. And my favourite song overall is 247.â
Yoon gasped. âI thought your favourite song would have been RUN2U since itâs a bit more mature.â
Eve shook her head. âNo, no. I prefer the more refreshing songs. My favourite ITZY songs are ICY and Not Shy because I think I suit them best. Not that Iâm bad at the darker concepts, just that I find it easier to enjoy the more fun sounding songs.â
âUnnie seems to like the cuter concepts, but she doesnât like aegyo,â Seeun teased.
Eve gaped at her. âI thought Seeun was on my side, but it seems not. But something thatâs interesting is all my favourite parts in your songs are J-ssiâs parts.â
âReally?â Yoon asked.
âYes, I donât know what it is about her voice, but I love it.â
They continued to talk, sharing advice and stories with one another until they had finished decorating their biscuits.Â
âWeâre done decorating our biscuits!â Eve announced to the camera as all three girls showed off their biscuits. âI hope you enjoyed today,â she said to Seeun and Yoon after they had put the biscuits down.Â
âToday was really fun,â Seeun shyly expressed.Â
Yoon nodded. âI donât think Seeun unnie has ever spoken this much during an interview before.â Seeun blushed as she hit Yoon's shoulder, causing Eve to chuckle.Â
âIâm glad you enjoyed today,â Eve told the two girls, turning to face the front camera once more. âI hope you enjoyed the first episode of Thatâs So Evie and please remember to listen to STAYCâs comeback Teddy Bear! See you soon, bye!â

The irritating thing about this article is that it totally fails to even mention the elephant in the room for elderly people: dementia. Itâs not much good being able to potentially keep people alive until theyâre 120 years old if for the final 25 years of their life they arenât compos mentis.
I had a great-aunt who died 3 days before her 107th birthday. Up until age 89, she was remarkably physically and mentally active for someone of her age. At 89 she broke her hip, but remained mentally acuteâŠuntil she was 92, at which point she started to get forgetful. The next 15 years were a long decline. Iâd say the last 10 years of her life (from 97 to the eve of 107) were completely depressing. By 97 she was in full dementia mode, and it only got worse from there.
She kept on living for another decade after that, but it wasnât much of a life. Most of the time she spent staring into space in her nursing home. She was too physically frail and also too mentally frail to continue living with family as she had before the dementia had set in.
She had lucid days, in which she didnât actually remember her family, but did realize she had forgotten everything except her childhood and her young adult years. And she found this humiliating and stressful, to know she should recognize people, but not be able to.
The days when she was lost in her own world were in some ways better, from the point of view of her family members, than the days she was somewhat lucid, and angry about the gigantic holes in her memory.
If you live long enough, you will probably develop dementia. And none of the scientists interviewed for that article are addressing mental deterioration as well as physical deterioration.
The last decade of my great-auntâs life was neither dignified nor happy. She couldnât read a newspaper, or do a crossword puzzle (she was a crossword fiend up until her early 90s when her memory started to get patchy). I had a conversation with her when she was 102 in which she seemed to know who I was and had quite a lively conversation with me, until she called me by my grandmotherâs first name.
I have a family resemblance to my (long deceased) grandmother. My great-aunt thought it was 1938, Iâd just gotten engaged to her brother and was planning my wedding. It was an interesting conversation from a family history standpoint, but she wasnât actually talking to me, her great-niece with whom sheâd once had a fairly close relationship. She was talking to her future sister-in-law in 1938.
I had been warned she might mix living visitors up with other people who are long dead, and warned it was best to play along. So I pretended to be my grandmother, but I wasnât really her. My great-aunt nodded off eventually, seeming content. It was the best visit Iâd had with her since cognitive decline had set in. But in her mind, she was a young woman again in 1938, not a lady of 102 bedridden and living in a nursing home.
She went on for 5 more years like that (except getting a little worse each year), and death came as a merciful release. It left me terrified of developing dementia, and determined that if I do (which I probably will if I live long enough), I will use MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) as soon after diagnosis as possible.
Because the thought of my body living on long after my brain has exited the building repels me. I donât want to keep going under those circumstances. Bear in mind that this great-aunt was merely the longest-lived relative of mine who developed dementia. Several others did as well. Itâs a very cruel disease.
My oldest uncle was in the memory care unit of a nursing home in April 2020 when he died after Covid ripped through his nursing home. And less than a year later, his widow was also diagnosed with dementia. Sheâs still alive, but now also in a memory care unit. So my cousins will have lost both their parents in spirit before their parentsâ bodies die.
And these billionaires who want to cheat death, do they really think they will be productively running their business empires when theyâre 120? Because chances are they wonât. Theyâll be in a very expensive nursing home, staring into space, reliving the glory days of their youth, or having relatively lucid days and realizing there are horrendous gaps in their memory and they donât know whoâs sitting at their bedside. And getting terribly agitated and embarrassed because they think they should remember.
Yes, there are people like Captain Tom who live to be 100 or more and donât develop dementia, but that isnât exactly the norm for centenarians.

Macario climbed into the car. As the men set off into the pounding rainstorm, Pika waved to them. The speed Dom drove would normally not have worried Macario, but he could hardly see the road ahead.
âIâve never heard of Snowman Railways before,â Macario said, trying to distract himself from the velocity of the vehicle.
âOnly elves and snowbirds have,â Dom laughed. âSo, an FBI agent. Fascinating! Did you always want to be a detective, or did you fall into the profession?â
About the Author:
C. L. Hart, the owner and sole employee of Naughty Netherworld Press, is spoken of in hushed tones. She is described as The Mad Scribe of the Northeastern Colorado Plains, The Terrible Old Woman, and The Author That Should Not Be.
When not penning sanity-destroying works of dystopian fiction, Lovecraftian fantasy, or old-school horror with the occasional sweet romance thrown in to upset the cosmic apple cart, Ms. Hart enjoys creating baked goods she hopes will be considered palatable.
Ms. Hart shares a home in a remote rural town of 134 souls with her adult son and three cats. Her sense of fashion is best described as Early Twenty-First Century Unmade Bed. This disabled former nurse can usually be found arguing with herself about subplots or rehabilitating eldritch horrors.

Aluminum Market: Products, Applications & Beyond
Aluminum is a versatile element with several beneficial properties, such as a high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, recyclability, electrical & thermal conductivity, longer lifecycle, and non-toxic nature. As a result, it witnesses high demand from industries like automotive & transportation, electronics, building & construction, foil & packaging, and others. The high applicability of the metal is expected to drive the global aluminum market at a CAGR of 5.24% in the forecast period from 2023 to 2030.
Aluminum â Mining Into Key Products:
Triton Market Researchâs report covers bauxite, alumina, primary aluminum, and other products as part of its segment analysis.
Bauxite is anticipated to grow with a CAGR of 5.67% in the product segment over the forecast years.
Bauxite is the primary ore of aluminum. It is a sedimentary rock composed of aluminum-bearing minerals, and is usually mined by surface mining techniques. It is found in several locations across the world, including India, Brazil, Australia, Russia, and China, among others. Australia is the worldâs largest bauxite-producing nation, with a production value of over 100 million metric tons in 2022.
Moreover, leading market players Rio Tinto and Alcoa Corporation operate their bauxite mines in the country. These factors are expected to propel Australiaâs growth in the Asia-Pacific aluminum market, with an anticipated CAGR of 4.38% over the projected period.
Alumina is expected to grow with a CAGR of 5.42% in the product segment during 2023-2030.
Alumina or aluminum oxide is obtained by chemically processing the bauxite ore using the Bayer process. It possesses excellent dielectric properties, high stiffness & strength, thermal conductivity, wear resistance, and other such favorable characteristics, making it a preferable material for a range of applications.
Hydrolysis of aluminum oxide results in the production of high-purity alumina, a uniform fine powder characterized by a minimum purity level of 99.99%. Its chemical stability, low-temperature sensitivity, and high electrical insulation make HPA an ideal choice for manufacturing LED lights and electric vehicles. The growth of these industries is expected to contribute to the progress of the global HPA market.
EVs Spike Sustainability Trend
As per the estimates from the International Energy Agency, nearly 2 million electric vehicles were sold globally in the first quarter of 2022, with a whopping 75% increase from the preceding year. Aluminum has emerged as the preferred choice for auto manufacturers in this new era of electromobility. Automotive & transportation leads the industry vertical segment in the studied market, garnering $40792.89 million in 2022.
In May 2021, RusAl collaborated with leading rolled aluminum products manufacturer GrĂ€nges AB to develop alloys for automotive applications. Automakers are increasingly substituting stainless steel with aluminum in their products owing to the latterâs low weight, higher impact absorption capacity, and better driving range. Â
Also, electric vehicles have a considerably lower carbon footprint compared to their traditional counterparts. With the growing need for lowering emissions and raising awareness of energy conservation, governments worldwide are encouraging the use of EVs, which is expected to propel the demand for aluminum over the forecast period.
The Netherlands is one of the leading countries in Europe in terms of EV adoption. The Dutch government has set an ambitious goal that only zero-emission passenger cars (such as battery-operated EVs, hydrogen FCEVs, and plug-in hybrid EVs) will be sold in the nation by 2030. Further, according to the Canadian government, the countryâs aluminum producers have some of the lowest CO2 footprints in the world.
Alcoa Corporation and Rio Tinto partnered to form ELYSIS, headquartered in Montréal, Canada. In 2021, it successfully produced carbon-free aluminum at its Industrial Research and Development Center in Saguenay. The company is heralding the beginning of a new era for the global aluminum market with its ELYSIS⹠technology, which eliminates all direct GHG emissions from the smelting process, and is the first technology ever to emit oxygen as a byproduct.
Wrapping Up
Aluminum is among the most widely used metals in the world today, and is anticipated to underpin the global transition to a low-carbon economy. Moreover, it is 100% recyclable and can retain its properties & quality post the recycling process.
Reprocessing the metal is a more energy-efficient option compared to extracting the element from an ore, causing less environmental damage. As a result, the demand for aluminum in the sustainable energy sector has thus increased. The efforts to combat climate change are thus expected to bolster the aluminum marketâs growth over the forecast period.
