Well, that worked pretty well for an 88% waxing moon with the ZWO ASI071MC color camera. The near-full moon and Jupiter at opposition were just far enough away to make this set up work--plus a lot of 5-minute exposures. That band of red at the top left is the tail end of the ridge of hydrogen that runs behind the Horsehead Nebula (B33). Imaging notes: 63 x 300-second subs, no filters with the ZWO ASI071 color camera cooled to 0C, William Optics RedCat 15 Apo refractor, Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount. The Orion Nebula (M42), Running Man Nebula (Sh2-279), De Mairan's Nebula (NGC 1982,M43), and surrounding nebulosity.

New telescope mount!
Tumblr media
look what just arrived! unboxed and assembled, this beefy mount is now ready for the incoming Astro-Tech 152mm (6") f/8 triplet apochromatic refractor - my dream setup!
the mount (Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro) weighs about 80 pounds, but it's also very portable, with a handle and removable counterweights - same for the 'scope (only 30lbs), with its own handle and quick-release to remove it from the mount. admittedly, this setup is at the limit of portability, but no worse than my big Dobsonian or even the Schmidt-Cassegrain!
why buy now when we have a baby on the way? well, with the incoming administration's promises of tariffs, expect prices of imported goods to rise 20-60% depending on how much or little they kiss orange buttocks
I recommend you do the same if you've been holding off on a big purchase - not only did I save 25% on both the mount and 'scope, but also an additional many percent by buying now before prices rocket upwards
BTW: this means I have a couple big reflectors to sell, so if you're looking for a 12" Meade LX90 Schmidt-Cassegrain or a 16" LightBridge f/4.5 truss-tube Dobsonian, hit me up

The Orion Nebula (M42/M43, NGC1976/1982) This picture shows the great nebula in the constellation of Orion the Hunter. On a good clear night, from a dark site well away from the lights of modern civilization, this glowing cloud of gas and dust can be seen with the naked eye as a fuzzy patch surrounding the star Theta Orionis in the Hunter's Sword, below Orion's belt. It is probably the most spectacular of all the objects cataloged by Charles Messier and now called by their `M' numbers. M42 had been known since the beginnings of recorded astronomy as a star, but it is so outstanding that it was first noted as an extended nebula in 1610, only a year after Galileo's first use of the telescope. Detailed descriptions started appearing later in the seventeenth century, and it has been a popular target for anyone with a telescope ever since. So many details are visible in even a small telescope that M42 will more than repay the observer who makes it a frequent target, and who will find that it is hard to make a realistic sketch that can capture all of the finer features. So outstanding is this nebula that it has two numbers. M43/NGC1982 is the separated portion to the north-east (top left), surrounding an irregular variable star. Although Messier stopped at only two, other parts of the nebula in this region have received further NGC numbers. M42 is our closest example of an HII region, being composed mainly of ionized hydrogen which gives off the red glow so dominant in every picture of the nebula. Deep photographs such as this one show that it is nearly a degree across, larger than the full Moon (although the Moon is so bright that it looks much larger). The energy to keep the nebula glowing comes from the very hot young stars in a formation called the Trapezium, embedded in the brightest part of the nebula and not visible in this photograph. The nebula and the brighter stars are very young indeed by astronomical standards, at about 30000 years. Compare this to our own Sun, which is considered to be a middle-aged star at over four billion years! M42 probably contains several hundred stars younger than a million years, still bursting with the energy of youth. Stars are still being born in a dense cloud behind the nebula, but they are hidden from our view by a concentration of dust which reduces their light to only a million-millionth of its original intensity. Fortunately, astronomers have developed special cameras and other detectors which are sensitive to infra-red radiation, more popularly known as heat, which penetrates the dust and reveals to us this stellar nursery. Although M42 is mostly hydrogen, in both neutral and ionized states, with a fair quantity of dust, it does contain significant amounts of other elements, especially oxygen. The green glow of doubly-ionized oxygen is strongest near the intense ultraviolet starlight at the middle of the nebula. To the north-east (the upper left in this picture) is a feature called the Dark Bay, which is a thick cloud of neutral gas which has not yet been ionized. Location: 05 hrs 35.4 min, -05 deg. 27 min (2000). Distance: nearly 500 parsecs (1600 light-years). Size: about 66 by 60 arc minutes. Mass: about 300 solar masses. Magnitude: 4.0. Power source: O and B stars. Photograph: Bill Schoening, KPNO 4m telescope, October 1st 1973. NGC 7822 - The Question Mark Nebula I attempted this target earlier in the year using the L-eNhance filter and once I got the L-eXtreme I wanted to give it another go. Captured over 3 nights at the end of imaging sessions, I was able to capture 4.5 hours and it blows my 3 hours with the L-eNhance away. Astrophotography from my backyard--from last night's imaging run: M78, LDN 1622, and a piece of Barnard's Loop. Top right is a structure composed of a batch of dark nebulae clustered around the reflection nebula Messier 78 (M78, NGC 2068), about 1,350 lightyears away, and bottom left is LDN1622, the "Boogeyman Nebula" about 500 lightyears away. And the wide ribbon running between them, mostly ionized hydrogen and interstellar dust, is part of "Barnard's Loop", which runs around the Alnitak side of the constellation Orion.
Imaging Notes: 49 x 300-second subs taken with the ZWO ASI071MC color camera (cooled to 0°C, gain 0) and the William Optics Redcat 51 apochromatic refractor (250mm FL, f/4.9), Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount, ZWO ASIAir Plus astro controller. I shot 94 sub-expsures at 5-minutes each, starting around 7pm and running through the night to about 4am, but ended up tossing almost half of them, stacking the best 49.

Interestingly the street corners in Barcelona are all angled as you can see. Ildefons Cerdà designed the city before automobiles, he included wide streets and his famous angled corners in anticipation of urban steam trams distributing goods and people. They would need lots of room to turn. These days however the angled corners allow the streets to broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, and fluid traffic in all directions. Once you notice it while walking around you can appreciate how open the streets are compared to other European cities

Pacman Nebula in Hubble Palette
This is a depiction of the Pacman Nebula (NGC 281) in a color palette commonly known as the Hubble Palette.
The data was captured using three narrowband filters; Hydrogen-Alpha (Ha), Oxygen III (O3) and Sulfur II (S2) emission lines.
Final image is a blend of these three narrowband images assigned as S2 to the Red channel, Ha+S2 to the Green channel and O3 to the Blue channel.
1) Equipment used:
Camera : ZWO ASI1600MM - monochrome camera Filter and Wheel : Baader 36mm unmounted filters with ZWO Electronic Filter Wheel Telescope : TS Optics TS107/700 with 0.8x focal reducer (effective focal length 560 mm f/5.2) Mount : Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro with EQMOD control software with Stellarium. Guiding : Astromanis 60mm with ZWO ASI-120MM-S monochrome camera Capturing Software : Sequence Generator Pro
Captured 50x360 secs of Ha. 50x300 secs of O3. 50x480 secs of S2.
30xflats in each channel 30xdarks in each channel
Bortle sky scale is on border of 5-6.
2) Pre-processing Using PixInsight (PI):
Use this tutorial as the guide and I change the workflow a bit depending on the target:
http://www.lightvortexastronomy.com/tutorial-pre-processing-calibrating-and-stacking-images-in-pixinsight.html
PI processes used for pre-processing: ImageCalibration, CosmeticCorrection, SubframeSelector (script), StarAlignment, LocalNormalization, ImageIntegration and DrizzleIntegration
 3) PI processes used for integration:
Started with DynamicCrop and basic Dynamic Background Extraction in each channel. Linear fit the O3 and Ha to S2. Channel Combination with PixelMath. Red - S2, Green - Ha, Blue - O3. Background Neutralization. Color Calibration. Extracted star mask and used Morphological Transformation for star reduction. Extracted lightness mask and used with Multiscale Linear Transformation in Luminance first and then on Chrominance. ACDNR for low scale noise reduction. Histogram transformation with Arcsinhstretch. Used the masks for two sets of curves transformation, once for star color and once for overall. Hue transformation for the golden/blue tone. SCNR with green reduction. Curves transformation for added saturation.

Cocoon Nebula - IC 5146 Located in Cygnus, the IC 5146 is a reflection and emission nebula. I finally decided to put everything together on the Celestron EdgeHD 8 for deep space and do some testing to make sure my guiding worked and that I could reach focus. Guiding was the easy part, focus was the pain. I finally got it and on the first night I captured m27 amd NGC 869, those I will post soon. On night two, I decided to shoot the Cocoon on both my Edge as well as my Meade 80mm Triplet. This here is from the Edge, and though I had some focus drift in the middle of my imaging (can't seem to get the auto focus to do its thing when using my Canon), I am happy with the result, especially considering I did not use any filters. . M3 (NGC 5272) is a globular cluster of stars in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici. It was discovered on May 3, 1764, and was the first Messier object to be discovered by Charles Messier himself. 4//2/2021, 9:49 pm. Westminster, MD. William Optics Gran Turismo 81 IV (480mm focal length, F/5.9), Celestron Luminos 2.5x Barlow (total combined focal length: 1200 mm @ f/14.75), Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount, Nikon D5100. 77 x 120 sec light subs, 32 darks, 31 bias, no flats. ISO 1600, 2 hours and 34 minutes total integration. Stacked and post-processed in Astro Pixel Processor and GIMP. Cropped for composition. Some star elongation from not using a flattener, and the barlow compounds the issue. #astrophotography #astroimaging #astronomy #nightskyphotography #globularcluster #M3 #skyandtelescope #williamoptics #williamopticsgt81 #celestronluminos #skywatcher (at Westminster, Maryland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNO0QGNnLoo/?igshid=1t6izb8ih7qam
