Unheralded Mitchell Comes Trumps For New Zealand 

T20 World Cup - 1st Semi Final - England vs New Zealand - Abu Dhabi 

New Zealand found an instant hero when all seemed lost as their lesser known opening batter Daryl Mitchell conquered the big stage with an unbeaten 72 that knocked out England in their semi final clash of the T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi last night.

Mitchell took probably everyone by surprise including his team-mates with New Zealand facing near defeat having made 58 runs in the first 10 overs and then needing 109 runs in the balance 10 overs with England's bowlers taking a firm grip in their defence of a 167 total.

But then came the turning point in the match that no one would have expected when Jimmy Neesham joined Mitchell as New Zealand needed to score 57 in the last four overs which they did with one over remaining in what will go down in history as one of the most dramatic and sensational finishes in a T20 World Cup semi final.

Neesham injected new life into the Kiwis as he changed the course of the game while blasting two sixes and a four in the 17th over bowled by Chris Jordan that produced 23 runs and brought down the equation to 34 runs in the last three overs.

Neesham then clouted a third six against a ball from spinner Adhil Rashid and was caught at extra-cover in the last ball of the over for a score of 27 in 11 balls that left New Zealand needing 20 runs in the final two overs.

But Mitchell stood like a cat among the pigeons and finished the match in the ensuing 19th over bowled by Chris Woakes slamming the required 20 runs with two sixes and a four while disregarding the final over as New Zealand made a giant leap into a T20 World Cup final for the first time that turned England's anticipatory celebration into zero.

Until his magical innings of 72 with four sixes, the 30-year old Mitchell's top score in T20 Internationals was 49 from 20 matches with just nine sixes in all.

But it appeared for all to see that he reserved his best when it mattered the most after he saw the end of his opening partner and power-hitter Martin Guptill for 4 in the first over followed by his captain Kane Williamson in the third over for 5 that left New Zealand at a disastrous 18 for 2 to reach just 36 in the first six power play overs.

Earlier England put into bat after losing the toss, could not have it their way until Dawid Malan (41) and Moeen Ali with 51 not out in 37 balls with three fours and two sixes took them to a respectable 166 for 4 in the 20 overs after openers Jos Buttler made 29 and Jonny Bairstow 13.
