I like ur idea of the royal family’s origins! Tbf a melting pot of Asian cultures in a family and city is super neat!

I imagine New Beijing would have a futuristic fusion language between Japanese and Mandarin because there seems to be a lot of overlap between the two in the books, like Kai’s family for example and other character names. Plus, both languages sound really nice and they share similar characters

The Eastern Commonwealth is practically half of the planet, so I think that the regional languages would still be alive and thriving. New Beijing being the capital--yeah! Maybe there would be multiple languages! There are a lot of Japanese references in the books despite being set in China because...well, probably because Marissa was homogenising those cultures 😬. I personally head canon that Imperial Family originated from Japan--hence the Japanese names--but set up base in Beijing for its historical power and significance. Over time the family became a blend of the two cultures.

one of my favorite parts of the lunar chronicles has always been how batshit insane it is. just the the genuine unhingery. the main character kidnaps her love interest from his wedding. said love interest stabs his arranged bride (a murderous dictator) with scissors at the altar. cress and thorne stay at an inn in the middle of the desert, and while he’s fucking around gambling she gets kidnapped into an underground medical experimentation human trafficking ring and bought by her long lost father. there’s evil moon people. scarlet and wolf get it on in a boxcar after like two days of knowing each other. 4/9 of the main cast aren’t human. cinder crashes kai’s wedding (again), murders twenty people, and jumps off a ten story balcony into a lake. kai keeps cinder’s metal foot so he can stare at it and long after her while she’s a wanted fugitive. cress fangirls over and stalks her outlaw crush on the internet for years and then bags him when they meet. not one of them is over twenty or mentally sound btw. no other YA series is doing it like that. applause

Oh and also most of them are in love with one of the others

YOU CANNOT SKIP THIS.

I know I tend to post all the cutsie kaider bits, but I also believe that moments like these show the complexity and depth of their relationship just as much as their lovebird scenes. Both of them are clearly very distressed with the conflict between the state of the world and their relationship. Kai is upset because he felt that Cinder wasn’t completely honest with him about herself, and her genuineness and honesty was a significant part for the liking he had taken towards her. But Cinder makes a good point in her own defence that, yeah, his character at the time probably wouldn’t have handled the news very well. Then Kai revisits his concern about her hiding this information from him “forever”, obviously implying he saw something in their relationship, which is why when she shuts it down with a reminder of their differences and that “there was never going to be a forever” it stings for him (and most likely her as well). A thing I like though, is how in this moment, their relationship between an emperor and a cyborg is labeled as an “absurdity”. This is so amazing because they literally go on to defy adversity, this being part of it. And now for the awesome part, MORE EMOTIONAL CINDER! I REPEAT! MORE EMOTIONAL CINDER! (This part breaks my heart a little though). When Kai asks her how many times she manipulated him, she’s clearly taken aback by this because she never did. Then it says “a fire stoked behind her eyes” when she asks him if he was worried that he “may have had actual feelings for a lowly cyborg”…

MY POOR BABY FELT LIKE CRYING. BUT SHE CANT. You can’t tell me she wasn’t upset and hurt by that. A lowly cyborg. And this ladies and gentlemen is why Kaider is all around beautiful. Because they had THIS. This hurt and conflict that makes all their love. That. Much. Better.
