Online Activist Resources: A Compendium
I've been reading into the history of Digital Activism, as I do my own work. And I have uncovered articles, blogs, and social networking sites dedicated to digital activism. It seemed like a good idea for me to share them here. To save someone else the work later down the line.
I'll be updating this post periodically with more resources:
Social:

The ecectrohippie collective
The electrohippie collective are a group exploring the on-line boundaries of protest, organising, and the use of technologically mediated systems for networking, freedom of expression and communications in support of community or individual campaigns.
Arising out of a group of 'electronic' environmental and social activists during the late 1990s, "the electrohippies" became infamous after the Seattle Protests in 1999. Since then they have focussed on activities that keep them out of the news due to the obstructive hassles that such notoriety creates.

Electronic Civil Disobedience as a form of Creative Activism
In my first blog titled “What is Digital Activism?” I sighted examples of some forms of Digital Activism and one thing that is synonymous with all forms of digital activism is that the message is passed in a creative way but still leaves a strong impact on the receiver(s) of the message and that right there is the beauty in the art of digital activism.
For this conversation, I will be exploring Electronic Civil Disobedience as a form of Creative Activism, to understand this, I will simply define “civil disobedience”.
According to YOUMATTER “Civil disobedience can be defined as refusing to obey a law, a regulation or a power judged unjust in a peaceful manner. Civil disobedience is, therefore, a form of resistance without violence”. With the definition above we now understand that Electronic Civil Disobedience is simply using electronic forms to achieve civil disobedience
Electronic civil disobedience was conceptualized as "dead capital" in the streets by Critical Art Ensemble. Resistance also became more dispersed and fluid as power had expanded, cyberspace was going to be the primary battlefield and the belief in the power of the cyberspace grew drastically. Two years later, EDT member, Stefan Wray said that electronic civil disobedience would become a real form of protest in the next century and he affirmed that it will not just be on a small scale, HE WAS RIGHT!
Practitioners turned it into a public spectacle, actively engaging a large number of "ordinary" participants, despite the popular belief that it should be an "underground activity”. EDT's "SWARM the Minutemen" (2005) reportedly attracted over 75,000 participants, and Electrohippies claim to have enlisted 400,000 people in their 1999 protest against the World Trade Organization.
Finding out about the above affirmed my assumptions that electronic civil disobedience gave birth to what we call digital activism today and this is because electronic civil disobedience was built on the assumed empowering potential of the internet but that’s my opinion.
As part of my reflection, I started reminiscing on active forms of digital activism that have been employed over the years by Activists in my country, Nigeria and I found some answers, find out in the next blog post haha.

CLASS 6 (week 7)
Companies have started with the use of internet (facebook, google) Small startups, basements. They grew spontaneously because of the nature of the network.

Google will eat itself - google was hacked in order to buy itself with its own money
Used to buy google shares (they created a firm) that could distribute the shares to everyone, making it a public company. Owned by everyone. They think that google, since it has been built, has gathered so much information. They grow (the ai) with all the data that we give it constantly. Buying google through its own advertisement. The artwork is the performance I, the objects were just proof of the artwork. In this project Google was hacked in order to be bought with its own money. Revenue was generated through Googles own “AdSense” initiative by programming bots to automatically click on banner ads placed on a network of hidden websites. The money from the scheme was used to buy Google’s shares and hand them over via GTTP Ltd., a firm set up for the artwork, which could ultimately distribute the shares to everyone, in order to turn Google into a public company. By establishing this circular model the project addressed monopoly over control of online information, advertising and its economy.

Lovely faces website, uses faces of facebook users DATA SCRAPING
Social commentary on the lack of privacy that came with social media, Facebook.
They used data that was already on the site, technically not stealing because they were already there without them hacking facebook profiles to retrieve more personal information.
This project was a social experiment by appropriating one million Facebook profiles, filtering them with face-recognition software, and then posting 250000 of them on a custom-made dating website sorted by facial expression A.I. analysis. The dating website (Lovely-Faces.com) provided a stage for anybody to interact with Facebook users’ facial expressions and personality traits, while Facebook had to confront the artwork made with its appropriated material. The project took place over five days of thrilling personal, media and legal reactions, which became a Global Mass Media Performance. During the performance the artwork received over a thousand mentions in the international press, eleven legal threats, five death threats, and several letters from the lawyers of Facebook. The project addressed surveillance, privacy and the economy of social media monopolies as well as art interventions within global media.
Co-author: Alessandro Ludovico.
Amazon noir - This project eluded Amazon.com copyright protections through a sophisticated hack of the "Search Inside" service. Complete digital volumes of books were obtained and reassembled into .pdf format, then redistributed for free. The hacking took place while traditional publishers were persuaded to digitize their publications for being handed to Amazon.com. The project generated wide press coverage and in turn, press inquiries to Amazon.com, which kept denying their vulnerability. This media performance was documented through various types of offline conceptual installations and with the appropriated books printed and assembled as if they were the originals. The conceptual artwork integrated the criminalization of piracy with free circulation and access to culture, hence addressing copyright and fair use laws within the disrupting digital economy and knowledge misappropriation by information monopolies.
Coauthors: Alessandro Ludovico and ubermorgen.
