The Road So Far: Season 10

Wow.

Really all I have to say about season 10, honestly. Wow. This season was chock full of amazing stories, and the overarching plot was extremely compelling. As far as best episodes, the first three start off strong with 1x01 Black, 1x02 Reichenbach, and 1x03 Soul Survivor. 1x05 Fan Fiction gets a ten out of ten, five stars, would absolutely watch again. 1x06 Ask Jeeves was a refreshing mystery a la Clue, and 1x12 About a Boy brings us an adorable young Dean. 1x14 The Executioner's Song is emotional and gives us a peek at what's to come with the Mark of Cain, and the final three episodes 1x21 Dark Dynasty, 1x22 The Prisoner, and 1x23 Brother's Keeper bring us to the conclusion of the arc in a fast-paced rollercoaster of a finale. Of them all, 1x05 Fan Fiction has got to be my favorite. I'm a sucker for music, and the comedy in this episode is unparalleled.

Aside from Dean, Charlie was the star of the show this season, and I'm still in denial about the end. Claire also got some time in the limelight, and she absolutely rocked it. I'd love to see her more in the future.

Of course we have to talk about Sam and Dean. Watching Dean spiral because of the Mark of Cain was horrifying, and despite the consequences, I'm glad that it was removed. Although Sam did some questionable things in his quest to remove the Mark, it could only compare to similar things that Dean did in earlier seasons. Ultimately, it paid off, although it cost Charlie's life in the process.

Looking forward, season 11 is all about the Darkness! Cas has his grace back, which means big things, and Metatron is on the loose again. Not only that, but Crowley is back in black and Rowena's loyalty is always in question. The war for Heaven may be over, but the Winchesters have plenty of adversaries to prepare for.

Overall, I think I'd rank season 10 pretty highly. Its light-hearted filler episodes are mostly packed into the beginning and sparse towards the back half of the season, but with the passing of the 200th episode (in a musical, no less) and the season's focus on character development, it really packs a punch.

I plan on starting strong with season 11 tonight, and I'm hoping the next few seasons will go as quickly as the first ones did. We're in the home stretch now. Carry on!

Aemond is quite similar to Alicent in personality. They have both internalized the “duty above all” value, and both look down on those who prefer to do what they want instead of suffering by doing their duty. It’s possible that Aemond was written to be naive like Alicent as well. Alicent supposedly secretly still cares about Rhaenyra, but spends years turning her kids against Rhaenyra’s and has been plotting to usurp her since 1x05. Yet still, Alicent thinks that Rhaenyra will somehow still be safe if she is usurped by Aegon, given by her surprised expression when Otto wants to have Rhaenyra killed in 1x09.

Therefore, it’s possible that although Aemond agrees with usurping Rhaenyra, he does not realize or think that Rhaenyra and her kids will have to be killed, and therefore still desires to be friends with his nephews. Aemond is clever but he is still a child and maybe he had not realized the gravity of usurping Rhaenyra. So it may be possible that Aemond is just naive like his mother, in that respect. Maybe it isn’t a flaw of the writing after all.

I agree that they are similar in the ways you listed, anon. I do not think that what we are seeing from them is neither real or excusable naivete. Or successful depictions of naivete.

1)

Usurpations mostly end with killing the competition. Because killing someone is a good way of making sure they aren’t going to reappear as a problem.

Any and all major aristocratic/royal people know this or they get to know this way after they become teens.

They learn their histories, they learn of the rises and falls of states and dynasties (which end mostly with the rulers’ and their families’ deaths) -- we see in episode 1 that Rhaenyra and Alicent read about Nymeria and in the last episode Alicent sends Rhaenyra a page form the same book. So we know that they had a history education of sorts. We know that they know that people kill each other for power. This is a feudal society, a pre”modern” world.

If Alicent truly believes that the lords outside of the keep will want to kill Rhaenyra and if she really believes that Rhaenyra will have to kill her children to remove the options for the other lords and secure her own rule.....

Then as a thinking and so-educated person -- like how the writers are trying to get us to see Alicent as -- she should/would have immediately understood that the persons on the green side--inside the Keep--would want to and are willing to kill Rhaenyra to limit the options to just Alicent’s children. 

So to claim that she doesn’t understand is disrespectful not only to her original character, but to human intelligence. Thus against her own intelligence, to emphasize the problem.

Aemond is about 16 the age of majority for his society. He would be an "adult" by episode 8.

Even thought 16 year olds are 16 year olds with their specific brain chemistry, Westerosi 16 year olds are not exactly the same in "maturity" as a real, modern 16 year old because they are given much more power and responsibilities. We are also told he reads philosophy, yet he can't reason the most basic of things, like I just described?

And while he was a child in episode 6 and 7, he is old enough (12-13) to have known about some Westerosi lords' ancestors and their petty king wars where some kings and queens were definitely usurped and killed afterwards. The education of Rhaneyra and Alicent that I mention still applies to him. 12 year old boys aren't excluded, since these people so not look at 12 year old boys like we do. Remember, they become legal adults at 16.

Other than that, why would her kids, including Ameond -- after she has been telling them that they needed to usurp Rhaenyra to survive? Again, go back to episode 6 where screams into Aegon’s face that he is the “challenge, just by living and breathing”.

Aemond believed Alicent when she said to him that the lords will definitely force Rhaenyra to target them if we are to believe that Alicent told him what she told Aegon about challenges. 

Why? Because a younger brother’s duty to his future king is to support him and deal with his enemies -- just as Daemon felt he must do for Viserys before the Great Council of 102 A.C. in the book. And again, they all plan to usurp Rhaenyra. Who they’d have to kill most likely. 

Not just because the lords will definitely come after her, but because they are determined to go after her.

The writers do not successfully separate and clarify whether it is Alicent’s envy of Rhaenyra’s willingness/ability to see and enact compromises and create space for her own autonomy & contentment, or if it is her fear for her kids that motivates Alicent. It is certainly about her feeling like she has more power, but it's muddled in the bad writing when these other two motivations haven't been properly shown or developed.

Because it can’t be both in terms of equal weight.

It can’t be both because once you add children into the murder game, nothing else matters more (or should if you claim yourself to be a responsible and caring parent of some level).

This is why Alicent and Aemond’s “naivete” and the claims of their want to be friendly with the blacks is not convincing and not real.
