Bonfire Heart
Day 21 of flufftober and the prompt is Bonfire! I hope you enjoy and you can read it here on Ao3.
Evan “Buck” Buckley stared at the soaring flames as they licked and flicked their way towards the sky. It wasn’t the usual angry flames that Buck delt with in his job. These flames seemed almost lazy as they danced in the air, small sparks showering like fireworks every so often as they wood burned. It was almost joyful. Like the flames could sense the celebration going on around it.
Buck had tipped over from tipsy into drunk about three beers ago.
A shout of laughter had Buck dragging his gaze away from the flames. A smile stretched across his lips, too wide for his face as laughter bubbled out of him. A few paces away, two of his friends who had been dancing had tripped over themselves and were now sprawled out in the sand, laughing so hard their bodies jerked with it.
A week ago, Buck had received an invitation from his old friends he had worked in Peru. They had been bartenders together, working the same shift and had become good friends. When Buck had left for L.A he had kept in contact, a group chat created where they could keep in touch with one another. It had been his friend Dustin who had sent the invitation out.
Guys! I’m getting married. Bachelor party is in Peru. Beach bonfire, just like old times!
Buck had taken the week off and flown down to Peru. It had been fun to catch up with his old friends. Buck wasn’t the same person he was when he had left them, none of them were and they had all grown up, but it didn’t erase the connection they had or the good memories they had.
Memories that Buck hopefully would remember in the morning.
“Dustin’s out!” his friend Sasha cried out, giving a drunken cackle.
“Awww does that mean the night is over?” Lillian pouted from where she was slumped in the sand from when she and James had tripped from dancing.
“Are we getting too old for this?” James groaned.
“No way,” Buck shook his head, immediately regretting the action when his head swam, and dizziness set in. His stomach gave an odd gurgle, and he regretted drinking that last beer.
“We should call a ride,” Lillian moaned. “I don’t think I can walk straight. Or stand.”
“Cap’n Dad would get us,” Buck said.
In the sand, Lillian squinted up at him. “Cap’n dad?”
Buck fumbled for his phone. “Yeah. He said I could call anytime.” He squinted at the bright screen and with clumsy fingers he managed to unlock his phone and pull up his contacts. He found Bobby’s name and pressed the name, bringing the phone up to his ear. It rang several times before it connected, Bobby’s voice filling Buck’s ear.
“Hey kid. How are you going? Having fun?”
“Cap’n dad!” Buck cheered. He looked at Lillian, throwing out his other hand to stop him from tipping over. “Hey, he answered! I told you he would.”
“Cap’n Dad!” Lillian cheered right back. “Guys! Cap’n Dad is coming to get us!”
A series of drunken cheers went up as the bonfire gave another joyful shower of sparks.
“Buck?” Bobby asked, drawing Buck’s attention back to his phone. “You okay there kid?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m good. I’m good. M’ drunk,” Buck said, voice a little too loud. “Don’t tell Sargent Mum. Don’t want her to arrest me.”
There was laughter but Buck couldn’t exactly pinpoint where it was coming from.
“Can you pick us up?” Buck asked, shifting in the sand. “We can’t drive. Not – not allowed to drink and drive. S’bad.”
“Yes, it is,” Bobby agreed. “Where are you right now, Buck?”
“On the beach. We had a bonfire. Look!” Buck held out his phone and held it in the direction of the bonefire. “Can you see it?” He held it a little longer before bringing the phone back to his ear. “Did you see it?”
“We aren’t Facetiming, Buck,” Bobby said gently.
“Oh,” Buck pouted. “Well, it’s big. And there is fire. But it’s contained and I made sure that we have a fire extinguisher on hand and a first aid kit and that we are all keeping our distance.”
“Of course you did,” Bobby chuckled. “Even drunk you are the best firefighter there is.”
Buck preened at the compliment. “Did you know that they used to burn animal bones in bonfires to ward off evil spirits?”
“I didn’t,” Bobby said.
“In Japan they are called bon-bi and are to welcome the return of the spirits of their ancestors,” Buck added. “But we are in Peru so I’m not sure if we invited any spirits.” Buck looked at the fire again. “I don’t think we did. Do you think that was mean of us?”
“No,” Bobby said soothingly. “I’m sure they understood.”
Buck gave a small hum.
“Buck, how did you get to the beach?” Bobby asked.
“We walked down from the house,” Buck said. He looked over his shoulder and the house that sat behind the dunes swam in and out of his vision. “S’right on the beach!”
“So, you didn’t drive?” Bobby asked.
“No. Not allowed to drive on the beach,” Buck frowned. “Can you come and get us? Please? M’tired.”
“Okay,” Bobby said. “I’ll be there soon. Hang on a second.”
There was noise in Buck’s ear as his eyes started to slide shut.
“Buck, baby?”
Buck’s eyes snapped open. “Sargent mum!”
Athena gave a low chuckle. “You having fun there, Buckaroo?”
“A lot of fun,” Buck gushed. “But I miss you. And Eddie. And Hen and Chim. And Maddie! I miss Maddie. And Eddie. I love him.”
There was a pause before Athena assured him, “We miss you too.”
“Even Eddie?” Buck asked hopefully.
“Especially Eddie,” Athena chuckled.
“Is Cap’n dad going to be here soon?” Buck asked.
“He is,” Athena said. “Can you do me a favour though and meet him at the house? You said you it was right on the beach, yeah?”
Buck looked back at the house again. “I can see it. Looks really far though. I’d rather Cap’n Dad come and get us.”
“I know,” Athena soothed. “And he will. But could you need to let him into the house so he can come and get you. He doesn’t have a key.”
“Oh!” Buck said. “Duh! Yeah, I have to let him in.” Buck turned back to his friends. “Guys! Guys we have to go to the house to let Cap’n Dad in so he can pick us up.”
There was some grumbling, but they slowly go to their feet, stumbling as the struggled to gain their balance. Buck felt his head swim as he climbed to his feet and his stomach gave an awful churn.
“What about Dustin?” Sasha asked.
“We’ll carry him!” James said, ambling over to where Dustin was snoring in the sand.
“I’ll carry him,” Buck said. “M’ trained for this.” He passed his phone to Lillian. “Here, you talk to Sargent Mum.”
Lillian took his phone, bringing it to her ear. “Hey Sargent Mum! Are you coming to pick us up too?”
Buck kicked sand as he made his way to James and Dustin. With a groan, Buck squatted down beside his friend and grabbed his arm. He took a couple of tries but eventually Buck got him over his shoulder in a fireman hold and got to his feet.
The journey back to the house took what seemed like forever. Each step made Buck’s head throb and his stomach churn. Sasha and Lillian walked up ahead, a steady stream of chatter happening as they spoke with Athena. James helped keep Buck steady as they walked. It was nice but Buck couldn’t help but compare him to Eddie and how his partner probably wouldn’t have tripped over his feet so much. (Though Buck suspected that Eddie probably would have just left Dustin to sleep it off on the beach in the first place rather than carry him because he didn’t know who Dustin was.)
When they reached the house, Buck put Dustin on the couch, groaning with relief.
“Evan! Your mum wants to talk to you,” Lillian cooed.
Buck took his phone back, bringing it to his ear.
“Buck, hon?”
“Hey!”
“You made it back to the house?” Athena asked.
“Yep! Dustin is on the couch,” Buck said proudly. “But I don’t feel so great now.”
“I bet,” Athena chuckled. “Go get yourself some water and then make yourself comfortable in bed while you wait for Bobby. Can you do that for me?”
“Yeah,” Buck sighed.
“Good. Do you want me to stay on the phone with you?” Athena asked.
“Nah. I’m good,” Buck said. “Thanks Sargent Mum! I love you.”
“Love you too, baby. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Go and make yourself comfortable and don’t forget to drink a whole glass of water for me.”
“Got it. Bye!”
Buck hung up and moved to the kitchen. He grabbed himself some water and drank it right there. He thought Athena would probably like it if he took more with him, so he filled up his glass again and took it with him to the bedroom he had claimed. As soon as Buck laid down on his bed, his eyes slid shut and let the throbbing of his head lull him into sleep.
When Buck woke up it was too streaming sunlight and the smell of bacon. Buck groaned, rubbing a hand across his face. Bracing himself, Buck sat up. The world swam and his head throbbed. His mouth felt drier than a desert and he felt one false move would trigger something ugly in his stomach. Slowly, Buck swung his legs off the bed and stood. When he stayed stable, he moved to the bathroom to relieved himself and wash his face.
When he finally came out to the kitchen, Buck wondered if he was still drunk.
“Bobby?”
Bobby looked up from the pan he was currently watching over and smiled at Buck. “Afternoon, kid.”
Buck slowly shuffled over to Bobby, mind trying to fight through the fog that was clouding it. “H – hi. What are, uh, what are you doing here?”
“Picking you up, like you asked,” Bobby smiled. “Thought you might like some breakfast though first.”
Buck collapsed onto the nearest stool, last night suddenly coming back to him. He groaned, dropping his face into his hands. “I called you.”
“You did,” Bobby said. Buck looked up to watch Bobby put bacon and eggs onto a plate before he slid it over to the counter to Buck. “And I’m glad you did.”
“You came all the way to Peru because I drunk dialled you?” Buck asked, swallowing around the lump in his throat.
“Anything for my kid,” Bobby promised softly. He reached across the counter, patting Buck’s hand. “No matter how far away you are, I’ll be there for you. No matter what.”
Buck sniffed back the tears that stung his side. “Bobby.”
“I love you, kid.”
“I love you too,” Buck promised. “And thank you, for coming out here. It – it means a lot to me.”
“Oh my god.”
Buck turned to see Lillian emerging from her room, hair askew and makeup smeared across her face. “Cap’n Dad really came.”
Bobby chuckled. “And I made you guys something to eat.”
“Ev, you have the best dad ever,” Lillian said as she stumbled over to the kitchen bench, planting herself on the seat next to Buck.
“Yeah, I do,” Buck grinned, picking up a piece of bacon.
Bobby beamed proudly and Buck’s heart fluttered in his chest. He really did have the best dad ever.

Desafio 100 grandes filmes pouco conhecidos: você assistiu no máximo 4 desta lista
