REFLECTIONS ON THE QUR'AN: Suratu'l-Baqarah (The Cow) : Part 23
“God wills ease for you, and He does not will hardship for you.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185)
Basically, there is no compulsion in the religion. Things that are seemingly hard are actually a means of ease. God always prefers ease for His servants in matters involving difficulty and trouble. Shortening the Prayer during travel; the permission for breaking the fast in the evening instead of ordering a fast from dawn to dawn; and the permission for tayammum (dry ablution using sand or dust, which may be performed in place of the ritual ablution or the whole body ablution if no clean water is readily available or there is some serious harm or danger in using water) are only a few examples. Even the mistakes in the devotions are forgiven if they are out of forgetting. For instance, if a person forgets that he or she is fasting and eats or drinks, this is not considered a violation of the fast; rather, it is considered a feast from Allāh. Furthermore, some exemptions are granted for the excused due to an essential or incidental reason, and easiness has always been preferred in the practice of the religion. For this reason, there are many seemingly-hard obligations that are in fact the cornerstone of the eternal happiness. For instance, many acts of worship involve struggling with the carnal soul and requiring patience. But they cause believers to rise to higher levels of the spiritual life, to gain resistance against any hardship, and to acquire a state apt for the afterlife.
In addition, if certain acts of worship cause trouble for those with some impediments or excuses, Divine dispensation or exemption comes to their help, and these acts of worship are either changed with easy substitutes, or they can even be omitted by the excused persons, leaving the spiritual reward to come from them to the good, sincere intention of the excused. For example, material or financial compensations or atonements compensate for the permitted omission of an act of worship, while the exemption from some acts of those who are too old or too weak to perform them or of those who suffer irrecoverable disease is compensated by the sincere intention of believers to perform them.
Difficulty and ease in fulfilling religious commands are directly proportional with one’s spiritual condition, educational level, habitude, and so on. This is so because the religion is all-inclusive, from the beginners to the educated and the pious. That is, it does not matter if the members of the religion of Islam are professors or students or doorkeepers, laborers, or bosses. It perfectly satisfies everyone with every level of understanding intellectually and spiritually. Everybody can feel the happiness and contentment of obedience to God’s commands and prohibitions according to their own spiritual level. However, if one examines the commands and prohibitions of Islam in regard to their essential nature, one understands that so much ease and tolerance are included in those commands and prohibitions.

3. The Hotel Cairo Is Private Property
Who knew Hughie Roman would be grateful to this Fabian person after ignoring his calls many times over the past two months? Accepting the Acting Manager’s invitation sounded like a long overdue holiday, but taking a rideshare to the Hotel Cairo was anything but. It truly was an act of desperation.
He opened the passenger door of the black circa 1990s Jetta, and a cloud mushroomed off it from the thick layer of dust that camouflaged its countless scratches, dents, and bald spots.
“Hughie Roman?” the red-haired woman at the wheel asked as she lifted her sunglasses to reveal her pale blue eyes. “I’m Rusty Fontana, your rideshare to Hannibal. I tried to run your credit card, but it got rejected.”
Hughie reached for his wallet and said, “I can give you cash. Why do you look so familiar?”
“I must have one of those faces,” she said. “You know an average Joe. I mean Josie.”
At least Rusty Fontana’s charming company made the two-day road trip from Los Angeles to Hannibal feel shorter and less repetitious than he feared. His chauffeur hesitated to share additional details about herself. To compensate, Hughie shared more than Rusty, who’d never seen his show, probably wanted to know about her outspoken passenger for the next forty-eight hours.
“Where do you want to get dropped off?” Rusty asked as they passed by trees, then more trees, followed by even more trees.
Hughie glimpsed the white and gray building with four massive pillars that made it look like, to his ex, the Pantheon, and Hughie, the White House. For once, they had both been correct. The Hotel Cairo was the premier example of Greek revival architecture that deserved to sit in Los Angeles or New York, not here in this backwater setting out of The Last Picture Show or—he choked—Deliverance.
“I’m headed there,” he pointed out the Hotel Cairo to an exasperated Rusty as they got closer to the hill it reverently crowned.
“You’re staying at the Hotel Cairo?”
“Just until next week. It’s not quite like I pictured it.” As they got closer, he identified that the stucco white was actually dirty white, and bald spots scarred the roof where some gray shingles had slid off. Sure, they were minor wear and tear, but Hughie cringed at the thought as they diminished the hotel’s face value. “It’s seen better days.”
“As someone born three decades before they built that hotel,” Rusty said, “I won’t comment. Hey, at least they have running water.”
Hughie glumly noted that the fountains spread out across the grounds that, per the agent’s vivid description, once spouted water were now used as planters for common-looking yellow flowers. He would take it up with the actual manager soon enough, not just someone acting as manager.
“Speaking of running water,” Rusty said, “I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, Mr. Roman.
“We’ve been stuck like glue for two days. You can speak your mind freely and please call me Hughie.”
“Alright, Hughie.” Rusty fanned her nose. “You may want to freshen up once you get to your room. Sorry, but I told you to wash up at the last three gas stations.”
“I have a thing about using public bathrooms.”
Rusty pinched her nose and scrutinized him from head to toe. “While you are quite handsome in a devil may care way, you smell like a—I forgot what’s politically correct for—bum.”
“I haven’t used a public toilet since I was in high school. Even then, I detested them. Who knows what nasty diseases you’d pick up?”
“Yet you don’t have an issue with stinking up my car. Thank God I keep Pine Air Freshener handy for my riders’ enjoyment. If you could reach for it below my seat and apply it per instruction to the rear-view mirror. I’d be much obliged. And feel free to wear one. Please, I keep extras.”
Hughie did as advised to hang one in the rear-view mirror. Then he panicked as the Jetta began to pull into the hotel driveway. Before the car turned to wind its way up the hill and arrive at the main building, he abruptly hit the vehicle’s horn.
“What the fuck?” Rusty cursed, not amused by the scare he gave her.
“Can we please stop here?” he asked.
“But the hotel’s still further up. Let me drop you off at the door even if you aren’t fit to mingle with the townsfolk. Main Street locals maybe, but this hotel is a four-star establishment. They have a higher class of riffraff.”
“Ahem,” Hughie said. “It’s a five-star hotel. They have a gourmet restaurant, health club, and spa. And the only local I’m gonna mingle with is the honor bar.”
Rusty scratched her head. “If you’re not careful, those things could run up an enormous debt.”
“I meant I’ll hit up the hotel bar.” Hughie sniffed his reeking armpits as he got out of the car. “After I take a shower and change.”
Because of their abrupt stop, they currently blocked the driveway of the Hotel Cairo. As he stretched beside the Jetta, he spotted an antique white and gold Rolls Royce as it rolled down the hill at the same time. Even in car-obsessed Los Angeles, the elegant automobile would have commanded a great deal of attention. This model, a 1938 Wraith, would have particularly earned his adulation.
Its engine may have purred like a cat, but its horn trumpeted like an elephant at him as he pulled out his luggage from the trunk of the more practical Jetta. With his luggage in hand, Rusty left Hughie in the dust, frightened off by the warning.
Having expelled at least one inconvenience from its path, the Rolls prepared to mow down its remaining obstruction. Face to face with the vehicle, Hughie angrily reminded himself that it was half his property and, therefore, whoever it was inside owed him some respect. He shivered as he looked into the icy-blue pupils of the attractive, middle-aged lady with dazzling flaxen hair snug in the backseat. She scolded her chauffeur, who winked at Hughie as they flew within an inch of his life.
Narrowly missing him, Hughie waved to get their attention, but the Rolls sped off the property in a huff. The vanity plates XENIA1 glared at him as he gave the Rolls one last look. He rolled his eyes while he stifled his envy.
Hughie dragged his Louis Vuitton rolling luggage and wheeled duffle bag, both matching Monogram Canvas, up the winding road to the Hotel Cairo. Surveying the sprawling property, this had indeed been his only worthwhile investment in thirty years of get-rich-quick schemes that included the late nineties Dot-com bubble and bust and cryptocurrency, whose concept he still couldn’t understand.
It wasn’t exactly that he was trying to get rich. Thanks to Autumn of My Discontent, he was rich longer than most actors managed. But alas, he got old. Everything went downhill from there.
Hughie felt guilty for not telling Rusty the truth. He didn’t want the hotel staff or their manager to see him get dropped off in her over-the-hill Jetta. Not that it wasn’t a fuel-efficient and comfy ride, Lameo Larry would say. It just wasn’t the right fit. He may be a loser back home, but Hughie Roman wanted to arrive at his hotel as a winner even if he had to pretend that he took a limousine from the airport after flying first class, of course. Obviously, the limo had a flat tire outside the driveway, forcing him to walk the rest of the way up.
Thank God he brought Louis Vuitton luggage. It was still the unmissable mark of a celebrity.
* * *
At the peak of the steep last length of the driveway, two men lost no time welcoming him to the Hotel Cairo.
“Hello,” Hughie said. “Which one of you is—” Before he could finish his friendly how-do-you-do, a well-dressed man with gray-green eyes immediately punched his face with wanton disregard. With that, he lost consciousness for at least a minute, in which he fantasized he cuddled an Oscar like a long-lost child.
“Whoever the man is, you should never have hit him. You’re the lawyer. You should know better.”
“What’s this drunken bum doing with expensive luggage like this? He must’ve stolen it from one of your guests.”
“Don’t call him that. It’s disparaging. He’s an unhoused person with an alcohol use disorder.”
As the Oscar tore itself away from his forlorn embrace, Hughie groaned in relief, then rubbed his left cheek. The thickness of his beard had protected his precious face from any superficial damage.
“I-I-I’m ...” he said.
“Thank God, you’re awake.” One of them kneeled to check on him. It wasn’t the man that struck him. This man had beaming brown eyes that matched his carefully tapered chestnut hair. If he wasn’t already fully awake, Hughie would’ve mistaken him for an angel shielding him from the nasty piece of work in the blue blazer. “I’m sorry, sir. The Hotel Cairo is private property and James just wanted you to go. But he should have asked and not laid a finger on you. Is your jaw okay?”
Hughie turned his head to show off his chiseled jaw. The nice man saw he was okay, sighed with relief, and caressed his cheek with tenderness.
“Fabian,” the mean man shouted. “You don’t know where he’s been.”
“Fabian Flores?” Hughie stood up.
“That’s me.”
“As I was trying to say before your security guard pummeled me without mercy, I’m Hughie Roman. We spoke last Monday.”
“I am not the security guard,” the one named James growled at him, “and you aren’t Mr. Roman. But this is probably his luggage.”
He unzipped the leather duffel bag and dumped its contents on the ground before Hughie or Fabian could protest.
“James, please stop,” Fabian said to his crazed co-worker. “Do you have any I.D. to prove you’re Hughie Roman?”
“Yes, I do.” Hughie reached for his wallet, but his back pocket was empty. “No, I don’t. I must’ve dropped it in the Uber.”
“You took an Uber here?” Fabian asked. He crouched on the ground and scooped up Hughie’s belongings.
Hughie saw a familiar wine-colored envelope sticking out among his unmentionables. He grabbed it and presented it to Fabian.
The hotel manager’s eyes dilated. “It’s our seal, and it’s sent courtesy of Carraway & Sons.”
“I still don’t believe him.” The man named James would’ve been handsome even by Hollywood’s lofty standards had he not had a disagreeable scowl. “He looks and smells putrid. Hughie Roman is a wealthy television star. Surely, he would’ve showered and dressed up before he checked into his hotel.”
James took the envelope from Fabian and pulled out the thick packet of papers inside. Finally, identifying an unmistakable sign made him laugh hysterically.
“What is it?” Fabian asked.
“It’s my father’s signature.”
“Now, do you believe him?” Fabian said like he definitely knew Hughie had told them the truth.
He caught the thoughtful hotel manager staring at him from time to time. Why was he so obsessed with his face long after he brushed his cheek while he’d been on the ground? Now that Hughie was on his feet again, Fabian studied his face even more conspicuously. It was as if he looked more familiar now that gravity hadn’t flattened his features out of proportion. Who did he see in those stolen glances?
Hughie’s mind raced as he heard James call someone on his phone. “Sheriff Holden, we have a criminal element at the Hotel Cairo.”
After a forty-eight-hour trip, being knocked unconscious upon arriving, and having his clothes scattered across the driveway, Hughie was out of steam.

Compensation for Retired Railroad Workers from Omaha
Tumblr media
Are you one of the thousands of retired railroad workers that was exposed to asbestos while on the job site? While nothing can undo the emotional and physical damage of working with this toxic material, compensation for retired railroad workers from Omaha is available. This is because the manufacturers of this unsafe material knew the risks they were putting workers through and instead of coming clean made the choice to hide the dangerous consequences of inhaling or ingesting asbestos dust. For several decades, railroad employees in Omaha and throughout the United States worked in unsafe conditions that have led to a wide range of health problems. These workers worked with several asbestos containing products and were kept in the dark about the dangers they faced in their workplace. The health and safety of these individuals was not prioritized because it was financially more beneficial to the companies that employed them to hide the truth and leave them in danger. If you were employed by a railroad company before 1982, our asbestos attorneys want to hear from you. Our law firm works with individuals that were exposed to this toxic material throughout their time working and have since developed health conditions that have been linked to asbestos exposure. If you or someone you love has been exposed to asbestos, reach out to our law firm today.
Do I Have to Have Lung Cancer or Mesothelioma to Collect Compensation?
No. Lung cancer and mesothelioma are the two most frequently discussed conditions that result from asbestos exposure, these are not the only health problems that have been linked to asbestos. In fact, many individuals that qualify for financial compensation do not even know that they do because they have no been diagnosed with a disease. However, if you experience shortness of breath, this may be a sign of asbestosis, which is an illness that occurs directly as a result of asbestos exposure.
How Does Asbestos Enter the Body?
The primary route of asbestos entry into the body is inhalation of air that contains asbestos fibers. Asbestos can also enter the body via ingestion. With dermal exposure, asbestos fibers may lodge in the skin. Inhalation The air pathway is the most important route of exposure to asbestos. It is the route that most commonly leads to illness. Exposure scenarios include inhalation of air that is contaminated: During work with asbestos, During work in the same space as others working with asbestos, From a worker’s skin, hair, and clothing, In areas surrounding a mining operation, In areas of the world where natural weathering, landscaping, construction, or other human activity (such as gardening and outdoor recreation) results in disturbance of asbestos-bearing rock, and In homes and buildings where renovations or demolitions disturb asbestos-containing building materials. Ingestion Ingestion-a less important pathway of exposure-occurs through Swallowing material removed from the lungs via mucociliary clearance in persons who have inhaled asbestos fibers into the lungs. Drinking water contaminated with asbestos (for example, from erosion of natural land sources, discarded mine and mill tailings, asbestos cement pipe, or disintegration of other asbestos-containing materials transported by rainwater). Eating biota, such as clams, that are contaminated with asbestos. Incidental ingestion during swimming in contaminated water.

Just a theory: the Pan-Africanists who hate #ADOS don’t hate #ADOS because of the latter people’s actual politics. Pan-Africanists hate #ADOS because the people who are involved in that movement are pointing out something that no one else will: that Pan-Africanism in 2021 feels like a response to a question that basically no one really even asks anymore. That for all of their grand pronouncements—the epic and almost mythic sense of their project’s historical certainty—it’s becoming harder and harder to ignore how Pan-Africanism today just sort of feels in a lot of ways like the soggy nub of a joint being passed around at a dwindling party.
Think about it. Does the strangely visceral opinion about #ADOS held and oft expressed by Pan-Africanists really spring from the former’s politics? Yeah? Really? Well, what is it about the #ADOS political agenda specifically that they so hate? Is it that they would like the U.S. government to continue holding onto the trillions of dollars that it owes these people? Is it that they approve of chemical plants and refineries and waste dumps being strewn throughout black American communities in such a way that basically ensures those residents—simply by going outside and inhaling oxygen—contract what are 100% lethal diseases?
Or is it more likely that these people feel somewhere deep down that ADOS are like some kind of apparently lower form of oppressed subjects? And that, as such, they simply aren’t entitled to (or even capable of?) determining their own fate. Is it that they feel ADOS are being insubordinate and unmanageable and refractory and childish? Is it that in their assertion of agency and in their unsparing critique of the international movement that has patently failed them ADOS are hurting the feelings of many people who are—let’s be honest—way too emotionally overinvested in what’s mostly become just a quaint area of scholarship in our universities’ Africana Studies departments?
Just a theory! But doesn’t that seem like maybe a more honest answer?
Maybe those Pan-Africanists just hate that #ADOS has been quite successful in its reparations advocacy despite the movement’s refusal to conform to Pan-Africanist orthodoxy. And maybe it’s that these Pan Africanists have a faint notion that wounded pride isn’t exactly a sophisticated reason to critique #ADOS, so they instead invent some bullshit political pretext about how #ADOS’s advocacy is ‘ahistorical’ or totally reactionary or that those in the movement are corrupted by a strain of American exceptionalism or whatever.
That, anyway, is the basic defensive crouch position from which Broderick Dunlap writes his recent article, “A Dose of Reality for the ADOS Movement”. Adhering tightly to what is now the standard formula for a Pan-Africanist-Critique-of-the-#ADOS-Movement think piece, Dunlap’s essay is deeply fucking boring, stiff, and backward-gazing. It is obsessed with identifying earlier modalities and pointing out the completely obvious fact that #ADOS’s approach does not correspond with them (which, given the failure of those forms of identity and resistance to offer a bulwark against something as basic as inadequate sewage treatment, let alone unify an entire continent, well, duh!). But mostly Dunlap’s essay just aims to persuade the reader that reparations isn’t about money; that the real and most vital question that black people in America need to consider (black people who are forced to live under regularly occurring boil water advisories, mind you!)—is: “what will it take for Black folks to forgive the United States?”
It is true that, in the #ADOS political literature, this inquiry into the capacity of black people to forgive their victimizer is never raised. It also seems true that it is difficult to imagine a less radical and more insulting position than that, but, anyway, I digress. Thirdly, the suggestion that the only thing that #ADOS is concerned about is a simple transaction of overdue funds—after which they just sort of dust off their hands and raise a glass to victory while beginning to contemplate their new investment portfolios—is totally absurd, very easily disproven, and yet another example of the strong tendency among Pan-Africanists to feel that it is their right to define the #ADOS movement however they like.
But if the demand for monetary compensation to be paid to their group is what makes #ADOS a supposedly purely avaricious movement—if that is why they must be vilified and opposed and viewed as a blasphemous and debauched form of a black liberation movement—then what is one to make of similar demands for material redress made throughout the diaspora directly to that nation’s former colonizer? Here’s one such example involving Barbados’s demand for the United Kingdom to pay it reparations. Or when Hilary Beckles, chairman of CARICOM’s reparations commission explains that the organization of Caribbean member states is “focusing [our reparations claim] on Britain because Britain…made the most money out of slavery and the slave trade – they got the lion’s share,” where is the prolonged outrage from the Pan-Africanists who would otherwise decry the omission of other diasporic groups from this one-nation-in-the-crosshairs look at who owes who what? Why don’t the people making the argument for those reparations get accused of merely wanting “crumbs” from the old imperialistic British pie or whatever? Again, we are asked to believe that the Pan-Africanist antipathy toward #ADOS is rooted in a fundamental political disagreement, or like some inviolable set of internationalistic beliefs. But when demands that are analogous to those of #ADOS receive effectively none of the hostility and outright disdain that the #ADOS’s demand for reparations appears to singularly attract from the rest of the diaspora, it sure becomes hard not to see a more cynical motivation at the core of the their ‘critique’ of the movement’s political aims.
Here’s what I think: I think that the refrain of reparations not being about money is a slogan that is 100% designed to sheepdog would-be serious reparations advocates into supporting business as usual forever here in America. I think once you say something like that you have been brought right into the Democratic Party’s orbit and the DNC will make short work of turning your little proclamation of righteousness and purity or whatever the fuck it is into a feel-good campaign of money-free ‘justice.’ I think the accusation that monetary reparations for ADOS are viewed by that group not as the seeds to self-determination but rather as the harvest itself is a lie concieved in malice and spite—that it is a mischaracterization that strives to bastardize a project that has only ever argued the need for a significant restructuring of the (highly group-specific!) maldistribution of wealth in America before their group could ever meaningfully participate in any kind of internationalism. But what I really can’t account for though is why ADOS saying that activates some serious lizard brain shit in a whole lot of people. Or why those people apparently feel the need to gussy up that brute emotional response in some bogus political principle that they can’t really criticize without hypocrisy: it is OK for CARICOM to explicitly exclude ADOS from their reparations claim against imperial powers (and merely refer them to another organization trying to make additional pecuniary arrangements for Caribbeans), but it is a cause for moral outrage when #ADOS tries to take their group’s case to the U.S. government? I don’t know. That sort of unevenness of application strikes me as people who are motivated way less by actual ideas and more by the people themselves who are doing what they’re doing. And what are ADOS even doing that’s so totally unconscionable anyway? Turning to one another and becoming passionately invested in their shared experience instead of performing a committment to something that is no longer really a relevant force in the world but which will get them meaningless approval by lots of strangers? Again, I don’t know. It just seems like a lot of the time that what governs opinion about #ADOS involves a lot more high school lunchroom behavior than what those people would like us to believe.

But this year, Thai people have been waiting anxiously for the hot season due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. When the Meteorological Department announced that Thailand officially entered the summer at the beginning of the month we all smiled. With scholars confirming before that with this radical heat can prevent the outbreak of the virus ...
But the coin always has two sides and does not change the fact that the burning temperature is a aftereffect of global warming. The heat level that has reached a critical intensity, the dry season therefore strengthened more directly with the intensity of forest fires in the country as well, which are easier to happen but more difficult to control than before. As can be seen from the forest fire in Loei Province And most recently at Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai Province.
First of all, there is an explanation that forest fires are a natural phenomenon, but almost 90% of the world is caused by human hands, from burning land to prepare the topsoil, weed removal, hunting, shifting cultivation, and carelessness. The environmental impact of forest fires is covering the large area. The most obvious and we all encounter every year is the smog, the pollution that covers the surrounding area. Often a forest fire consume a large area, they can float to bash their neighbors because of the wind current that interconnected around the world, like the tides, for example, the forest fires on Sumatra, Indonesia that sprayed into Singapore, Malaysia, and Southern Thailand.
As the world used to be, it had not yet experienced the air pollution of this size, the combustion dust would be washed away with rain. But as the world heats up while the burning of the forest remains combined with combustion from automobiles, industries and households. Air pollution therefore increases beyond the systems of the world to manage in a timely manner. We have once again become the major news around the world. When Chiang Mai has been named the city with the highest air pollution in the world repeatedly. From the Air Visual application data that collects weather data from around the world and reports in real time.
The impact of forest fires is still greater than what we know. It directly affects the world environment. Scientists have found that forest fires increase the temperature of the earth to form a vicious circle. When the world heats up by one degree, the forest will need about about 15% more rain to compensate for the moisture lost. As for humans and wildlife, when the frequency of forest fires increases, dust and airborne particles become denser and become permanent pollution, resulting in a higher incidence of respiratory disease rates. Wild animals, not only losing their lives, but also losing their long-term habitats.
Although it may seem worrisome, the phenomenon of frequent and intense forest fires every year, which is a worldwide phenomenon, is just the beginning of the disappearance of forests. Something that environmental experts are more concerned about, because as the world steadily gets warmer, the time required for nature to be restored will also increase as well. In the end, the ecosystem in that forest will become damaged and degraded. Now, in some countries, rainforests are slowly becoming deserts.
Forest fires prevention work at this time is extremely important, even if it is only the solution at the end of the incident. The best way is to maintain the moisture in the area as much as possible by turning to a life that is sufficiently consumed and uses world resources economically, especially using electricity and water, because these two resources are truly the fruitful of forests.
Today, Thailand receives electricity and water from dams. But if it doesn't rain, the dam will turn into a useless, dry concrete structure. Without forests, there is no water as well ...
Nonetheless, it's not too late, even though this year, the Meteorological Department announced that Thailand will face drought until the middle of the year, but if we both turn to save water and electricity seriously and make it a habit, we will help solving global problems together until tangible changes is made. Instead of playing the role of "The Trouble Maker.”
If there are no changes to the upcoming March 28th, this is the day the Earth Hour campaign will take place. On that day, millions of people all over the world will turn off the lights at 8:30 pm local time for an hour to raise awareness of the impact of global warming to the world. The research studied from the Energy Research and Social Science in 2014 with 10 countries participating in the power-off campaign for six years, found that during the time, each country saved up to 4% of their energy consumption. Which is considered not quite bad. Since that time is the period of high demand for electricity.
Think about it, if we build a new habit, change this 1-hour campaign to realize the value of a life-long resource consumption. How will this world be cooler and be more livable?

What Should You Do If You Are Unable To Work Due To Occupational Diseases?
Around the world, millions of people are unable to work due to occupational diseases. These diseases are caused by exposure to hazardous substances or conditions in the workplace. In some cases, they can lead to permanent disability or even death.
The good news is that there are laws to protect workers from these risks. If you cannot work due to an occupational disease, you may be entitled to compensation from your employer.
This article provides an overview of occupational diseases, their symptoms, and what you can do if one affects you.
What is an occupational disease?
An occupational disease is any chronic ailment caused by prolonged exposure to hazardous conditions in the workplace. Occupational diseases can be caused by various factors, including exposure to chemicals, dust, or other toxins. Occasionally, an occupational illness may result from repetitive motion or poor ergonomics. While occupational diseases can affect workers in any industry, certain occupations carry a higher risk.
For example, workers in the construction industry are at an increased risk for respiratory diseases due to exposure to dust and other airborne particles. Likewise, workers exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as those used in manufacturing semiconductors, are at an increased risk of developing cancer.
There are a variety of ways to prevent occupational diseases.
The most effective method is to eliminate exposure to the hazardous conditions that trigger the disease.
Sometimes, this may mean using personal protective equipment, such as masks or gloves.
In other cases, it may mean redesigning workstations to improve ergonomics.
Occupational diseases can have a significant impact on workers and their families. In addition to the physical effects of the disease, workers may also experience financial hardship due to lost wages and medical bills.
How can an occupational disease impact your ability to work?
An occupational disease can have a significant impact on your ability to work. In addition to the physical effects of the disease, you may also experience financial hardship due to lost wages and medical bills.
The emotional toll of an occupational disease can also be significant, as you may feel unable to perform your usual duties at work. In some cases, you may even be forced to take early retirement.
What should you do if you are diagnosed with an occupational disease?
If you are diagnosed with an occupational disease, it is essential to seek medical treatment and inform your employer as soon as possible. You may also want to consult an experienced attorney who can help you understand your legal rights and options. Workers diagnosed with an occupational disease may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits, disability benefits, or other forms of financial assistance.
If you are diagnosed with an occupational disease, you should seek medical treatment and inform your employer as soon as possible. You may also want to file a workers’ compensation claim. Workers’ compensation can help you cover lost wages and medical bills. In some cases, it may also provide benefits for your family.
How can filing a workers’ compensation claim help you?
If you have an occupational disease, you may be eligible to file a workers’ compensation claim. This can help you get the benefits and compensation you need to cover your treatment costs and lost wages.

Occupational Respiratory Diseases : How To Get The Best Possible Compensation?
In the United States, employees who develop an occupational respiratory disease may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. Suppose you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an occupational respiratory disease. In that case, it is essential to understand the workers’ compensation process and how to get the best possible compensation.
Occupational Respiratory Diseases
Occupational Respiratory illness claims are a big worry for employers, employees, and insurance companies. It is one of the most common work-related illnesses that workers’ compensation covers.
As was already said, occupational respiratory disease is one of the most common reasons people file workers’ compensation claims, and many different things can cause it. Common claims for workers’ compensation because of a respiratory illness are breathing problems and lung diseases.
Work-related illnesses can range from the dangerous black lung disease, caused by breathing in coal dust, to coronavirus/COVID-19, caused by breathing in asbestos fibers.
Also, in the US alone, nearly 7 million people have asthma caused by their jobs and another 19 million file claims for respiratory illnesses. Conditions at work can cause many respiratory diseases that can kill you.
In the US, the leading cause of disability is a disease of the lungs, like asthma. In the US, claims for respiratory illnesses at work have increased for a long time.
Different kinds of lung diseases
A typical occupational respiratory diseases claim comes from an employee exposed to a dangerous substance, like asbestos, and then got a short-term or long-term respiratory illness.
The problem is that even when an employee is diagnosed with a work-related disease like mesothelioma, it is often hard to figure out precisely what caused the infection.
In some places of work, like construction sites, chemical plants, and other similar businesses, workers are often exposed to substances known to cause breathing problems.
There are many dangerous substances in many workplaces that could hurt the lungs of workers. Respiratory injuries are lung diseases that can be traced back to a person’s workplace.
A cold or the flu are not work-related illnesses for workers’ compensation. Still, it is considered to be related to your job if you get tuberculosis, brucellosis, hepatitis A, or COVID-19 at work.
It is not clear if these policies will cover COVID-19 illnesses. Specifically, suppose COVID-19 is a covered illness or injury. In that case, most property damage claims made by workers against their employers should be thrown out by workers’ compensation laws, assuming COVID-19 is a covered illness or injury.
How to claim an occupational respiratory disease to get the most out of your compensation?
In the US, many people don’t know how to file claims at work for respiratory illnesses. For example, your doctor may tell you that you have a lung disease and need to stay home from work or ask for money.
Talking to your boss First, you should tell your employer. It is an important step. If you don’t report your time off on time, your employer can refuse to pay you. If you don’t tell your boss in writing within 30 days of getting hurt on the job, you might lose your right to workers’ comp.
Filling out the form So, you need to get a Respiratory Illness at Work form from the human resources department of your company. Law requires this form for anyone who wants to claim a respiratory illness. Your employer must give you the claim form in person or send it by mail within one business day of finding out about the disease or injury. Fill out the “Employee” section of the form and send it to your employer immediately. Please fill out the employee section of the DWC-1 application form carefully and give it to your manager as soon as possible. Make sure to list any parts of your body that you think may have been hurt or affected by your injury or illness at work. Filling out this form should be done with the help of your lawyer.
Talk to an experienced occupational respiratory illness Applicants must show a link between what they did and the injury suffered. Usually, an employee who files a claim for damages must show that he was hurt or got sick at work or during his career. If there is proof that the accident happened because of the job, the worker gets paid. Illness is a complex and unique topic to collect and present. Even a tiny mistake can cause a claim to be turned down. So, experts should do this kind of work. You can get money from your insurance company if you have a respiratory illness claim. You won’t have to pay anything out of your pocket, and you can get reimbursement back for medical bills you’ve already paid. Contact us at Pacific Attorney Group immediately if you don’t know what to do if you get a respiratory illness. We’ll help you file a claim that works and brings you the money you deserve. okay so i reblogged that post about medieval ‘salamander wool’ garments made from chrysotile asbestos a bit ago with more information and a source, but i looked through the notes first and they bothered me so much i’m still thinking about it, so here’s more information about asbestos
people make mesothelioma memes now & that’s their prerogative & many of them are quite funny, but i am only okay with them if we are all on the same page about asbestos here. i did not know until fairly recently what mesothelioma is or what asbestos does, other than ‘cause cancer’ and ‘not catch on fire,’ so i have been doing a lot of reading lately & now i want to clear something up because this is going to bother me until i write it down. asbestos insulation, asbestos fabric, asbestos cement -- they don’t kill people once they’re installed unless they’re damaged. the omnipresence of asbestos has created risk, as these products have degraded over time, but deadly exposure is primarily occupational.
asbestos fibers kill workers who mine, refine, package, ship, and install asbestos, and now the workers who remove and dispose of it. asbestos-related diseases are still primarily occupational, and they kill mostly working people. environmental asbestos exposure occurs, primarily -- though not exclusively -- through airborne asbestos dust; incidence is particularly high around old factories and mines and the few that still operate (asbest, for example). in fact, the connection between asbestos and mesothelioma was first demonstrated by an epidemiological study of a south african amphibole mining township in 1960. mesothelioma is a cancer of the tissue lining the chest or abdomen, and it kills people quickly and painfully, usually within eighteen months. there is no safety gear which can entirely protect against asbestos fibers, and accordingly mesothelioma -- and asbestosis and asbestos-related lung cancer -- are occupational hazards. that’s why they’re more prevalent in men, although women’s incidence has gone up significantly in the last few years. asbestos-related disease has killed millions of people; in 2008, it killed around 90 thousand people worldwide, and the WHO estimates that around 125 million people are exposed to asbestos in their workplaces. the risk now acknowledged in the west has not prevented the use of asbestos in the third world, and there is no global ban: what this means is that there will be asbestos-related deaths by the thousands until at least mid-century, and because the risk of asbestos is now widely known, the workers who are involved in the industry are likely to already be vulnerable in other ways.
the point here is that the kings and emperors who had rare and priceless fireproof garments did not get mesothelioma, or asbestosis, or lung cancer. they kept their regalia like treasure -- they wore it rarely, perhaps only in death, and died regally of gout, infection, and old age. the people who were at risk were the miners and weavers, people who are always at risk. the joke that feudal lords got their just deserts along with their salamander shirts is still just a joke: that didn’t & doesn’t happen. the companies that installed asbestos and suppressed the connection between asbestos & lung cancer in the fifties, and then between asbestos & mesothelioma in the sixties, and lied about their safety standards, and refused to pay compensation, and kept selling record high amounts of asbestos in the eighties -- they’re fine. so are the government officials who let them do it. even if company stock plummeted, the people who worked in their offices can breathe. asbestos-related disease is class war. it has been class war this whole time.
read about it.

Understanding Dust Disease and Compensation Claims
Tumblr media
OVERVIEW
Dust disease refers to various chronic lung conditions that occur due to harmful exposure to hazardous dust. The most common particles include asbestos, bagasse, cotton, mouldy hay, silica and straw. Exposure to dust from cutting, drilling, grinding and sanding, as well as hard metals, can also cause this sickness.
If you or a family member are suffering from dust disease or a similar condition as a result of inhaling harmful particles, you may be entitled to compensation. With experience handling dust disease claims, contact Gerard Malouf & Partners for a no obligation initial consultation if you are seeking compensation for charges regarding dust disease and other chronic lung diseases that fall under this umbrella.
Dust disease compensation examples
Dust disease occurs mainly in those who work in occupational careers such as manufacturing, installation, sandblasting, tunnelling and mining. Those who consider themselves labourers or tradesmen have likely come in contact with the hazardous dust particles previously mentioned, heightening the exposure risk and increasing the chances of getting dust disease.
Most commonly, claims that we handle cover those who have worked in those occupational careers in the past, but are now retired. That means initial exposure doesn’t necessarily get you sick right away — you can develop dust disease symptoms years after exposure to hazardous dust. The difference is that health and safety regulations have changed tremendously over the last few decades; occupational workers today have better protocols in place to ensure their lungs are protected.
Nevertheless, we still assist younger clients with dust disease claims. Because regardless of workplaces having created safer, more stable environments, dust disease can still occur.
Injuries and symptoms related to Dust Disease
Are you worried about your current state of health? Have you worked in an occupational job in the past and were exposed to dust particles, but you’re not sure if you’re experiencing dust disease?
Below are some of the common systems related to the condition that can help you get a better idea of whether it’s time to make a dust disease claim with Gerard Malouf & Partners:
A sudden and persistent cough
Shortness of breath
Sudden weight loss
Recurring lung infections, such as pneumonia
Inability to exercise
While you are not required to get a medical evaluation before speaking to us, dust disease is confirmed with a CT scan. If you are experiencing any of the prior symptoms, it’s time to investigate the cause. Contacting us is your next best step to gaining the compensation you deserve.
What makes me eligible and ineligible for dust disease compensation?
According to the Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia, those medically diagnosed with chronic lung disease, such as asbestos disease, may be entitled to compensation. As previously stated, medical evidence that proves you are living with chronic lung disease is a critical step to putting a dust disease compensation plan in motion. If you have proof that your chronic lung disease was caused by exposure to harmful dust particles, you’re in even better shape to get started on your case. Those claiming common law damages to their employer or another third party will also need proof that lung disease was the result of negligence or failure in duty of care.
If you have a chronic lung disease but the medical evidence shows it wasn’t caused by harmful particles, you wouldn’t be qualified to claim compensation through a dust disease claim. The same is true if you do have a condition caused by dust particles but it is not considered a dust disease, such as pleural plaques.
How to make a dust disease claim
Making a dust disease claim may seem like a complex and difficult process, but it doesn’t have to be. We at Gerard Malouf & Partners want to assist you with your compensation claim and help you to get the most out of your dust disease claim.
Seeking legal assistance from trained, experienced professionals should be a top priority on your journey to claiming dust disease compensation. At Gerard Malouf & Partners, we offer a no obligation initial consultation directly with our lawyers to help you understand your claim and potential compensation – just call us.
After a consultation and assessment with us, we will sign you up as a client and start investigating your case. We will examine your medical records and may speak directly to your doctors. No two dust disease cases are ever the same, but typically, claims take between one year and 18 months to resolve. We understand that these claims are time-sensitive in nature, and we will work hard to advocate for you based on the state of your health.
No matter how long the claim takes to settle, we want you to feel comfortable and confident that your individualized case is in good hands. Our team is fully capable, supportive and compassionate about helping vulnerable people get the assistance they need.

unclean without and within
From time to time while reading Patrick O’Brian’s novels in the Aubrey-Maturin series I stop and search them for signs of late style. By this I mean the sense of an ending, or at least the feeling that there is surely more of them behind me than there is in front. I recently finished The Wine-Dark Sea, which is the sixteenth instalment in a series that began in 1969 and ended with the publication of a final (unfinished) volume in 2004. This one came out in 1993, with the author well into his 70s; almost twenty-five years after the first in the series.
Yet such a progression of time is scarcely evident from the text: this is unmistakably the same writer who started out with Master and Commander and Post Captain all those years ago. If you were to read them back to back, they’d seem less contiguous than seamlessly continuous. It is not for nothing that some readers describe this series as really being instalments in one vast novel completed over the course of perhaps a third of a man’s lifetime.
This is not to say that there’s no change in style, no progression, no growth. To take an obvious example, by now the author has become much more dextrous when it comes to the handling of the naval jargon for the benefit of the casual reader. The books become more comfortable dwelling in the interiority of their characters, sometimes to unusual and oblique effect. And of course our heroes have aged a bit, but not much; for several books now Jack and Stephen are referred to in ways that suggest the onset of late middle age, but what exactly this means is never quite clear. Age, here, is like a layer of dust that settles quickly but can be blown away at a moment’s notice when required. Much like how the HMS Surprise itself vanished for several books before appearing with most of its old crew again, O’Brian is not above grinding the authorial gears, bending the rules of historical fiction to get what he wants at times. Such is the writer’s prerogative.
I thought the previous book, Clarissa Oakes, was a rare misfire; by comparison The Wine-Dark Sea is very much a return to form. It finally details the completion of a journey which I think was first mentioned way back in The Letter of Marque. As if to compensate for the relative quietude of its predecessor, this is a story crowded with incident. There’s a couple of great sea-chases, an erupting volcano, a thrilling sequence in an ice floe, and a bigger than usual helping of Napoleonic banter and intrigue by land. We even get a trip way up into the Andes, and a terribly bloody battle with pirates (rarer than you’d think in this series). All of which is to say that at this stage in the books, there is still no sign of the author slowing down.
To detail the story would be somewhat besides the point here. The form of this novel is mostly given over to the picturesque; much like those earliest books in the series, it is a series of events loosely connected by plot but mostly engendered by chance. Perhaps the most interesting character in this instalment is Dutourd, a French captain mentioned briefly in the last book but only met properly here. He is a would-be revolutionary and accidental privateer, an apparently sincere idealist dedicated to setting up a new kind of society in whatever colony will have him and his gunboat. Naturally, Jack is fairly frank in his contempt:
‘From the first Jack Aubrey had disliked all that he had heard of Dutourd: Stephen described him as a good benevolent man who had been misled first by ‘that mumping villain Rousseau’ and later by his passionate belief in his own system, based it was true on a hatred of poverty, war and injustice, but also on the assumption that men were naturally and equally good, needing only a firm, friendly hand to set them on the right path, the path to the realisation of their full potentialities. This of course entailed the abolition of the present order, which had so perverted them, and of the established churches. It was old, old stuff, familiar in all its variations, but Stephen had never heard it expressed with such freshness, fire and conviction. Neither fire nor conviction survived to reach Jack in Stephen’s summary, however, but the doctrine that levelled Nelson with one of his own bargemen was clear enough, and he watched the approaching boat with a cold look in his eye.’
Stephen is a little more nuanced — and sarcastic — in his critique. After being asked what he thinks of democracy, he appears to avoid the question, pleading etiquette:
‘…we nevertheless adhere strictly to the naval tradition which forbids the discussion of religion, women, or politics in our mess. It has been objected that this rule makes for insipidity, which may be so; yet on the other hand it has its uses, since in this case for example it prevents any member from wounding any other gentleman present by saying that he did not think the policy that put Socrates to death and that left Athens prostrate was the highest expression of human wisdom, or by quoting Aristotle’s definition of democracy as mob-rule, the depraved version of a commonwealth.’
Between Aubrey’s stolid conservatism and Maturin’s cynicism, it is difficult to extract much which is admirable about Dutourd from O’Brian’s writing. Perhaps the best we can say for him is that he seems to have a genuine concern for the wellbeing of the men around him. But he is not a leader. Being genuine in this world seems to count for very little unless you have the capability to back it up.
Given the constant level of contempt aimed at Dutourd throughout, I wonder if it’s possible to salvage a consistent political perspective from these books. There’s a gentle but consistent conservatism, of course, that comes from the overwhelming faith throughout in the institution of the navy — a faith only partly related to the actual men who serve in it, and which has little or nothing to do with a sense of Britishness or national identity. The thing above all for O’Brian is the nature of the service, as exemplified by what it takes to operate one of the most complex engines of war ever designed. This, for him, is society; it is not an ideal society, but it is an immensely capable example of one. In Dutourd we see one whose only goal is to undo that society, and replace it with something decentred, nebulous, suspicious.
The pleasing contrast in the series always comes from comparing this conservatism to Maturin’s revolutionary liberalism, itself tempered with doubt towards all institutions. But as the series goes on it seems like Stephen’s most defining characteristic is that he has no faith in anything except himself. His concern for the welfare of his fellow man seems sincere, at least when a scalpel is in his hand, but it isn’t heartfelt; were he living on land, we can’t really imagine him working as a surgeon, either for profit or out of the goodness of his heart. He lives for the moments when he is alone in nature. And in that regard he seems like a figure who exemplifies a certain kind of libertarianism, one which is sometimes associated with the later years of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Less Rousseau, more Thoreau.
But Maturin’s gift, and his curse, is that he alone amongst the crew seems to possess a particular sense of aloneness. I love, for example, this little passage, from his trip into the Andes:
‘So it was: yet the western sky was still dark violet at the lower rim and as he looked at it Stephen remembered the words he had intended to write to Diana before he put his letter to the candle: ‘in this still cold air the stars do not twinkle, but hang there like a covey of planets’, for there they were, clear beads of unwinking gold. He could not relish them however; his dream still oppressed him, and he had to force a smile when Eduardo told him he had reserved a piece of bread for their breakfast instead of dried potatoes, a piece of wheaten bread.’
That pretty image followed, by the pang of self-awareness — the memory of a dismal dream, his faraway wife hung for some strange crime — and then that old O’Brian trick of breaking through with indirect discourse that gently mimics speech. ‘A piece of wheaten bread.’
One more thing I want to add. There’s something very peculiar about the fate of Martin here. I always found something feminine about his portrayal, perhaps in part because his traditional role in these books is to be Stephen’s conversational partner while Jack is indisposed. Theirs is a friendship in which intimacy seems to have been traded in for constant peaceful companionship.
Eventually Martin becomes such a constant presence that he seems almost like a chaste spouse to Stephen. I don’t think O’Brian ever explicitly describes him as effeminate; but as a man, he doesn’t quite match up to the capabilities of his shipmates. Jack is perpetually uneasy with him, and I’m not sure it will suffice to say that he’s only suspicious of Martin’s authority on doctrinal matters. But the suspicion is strange, because it seems rootless. Martin isn’t outwardly threatening. He’s sensitive, observant, yet utterly hopeless as a physical presence compared to either of the leads. He’s perfectly pleasant, but not exceptional.
In this book, something odd happens. In Clarissa Oakes, Martin’s role as occasional companion appeared usurped by the titular woman smuggled aboard the ship. Now, it seems like O’Brian was looking for a way to get him out of the way, perhaps in order to set up a situation further down the line in England. Martin’s relationship with Clarissa becomes the instrument for bringing this about. Here is Stephen on the subject:
‘…Whether he has the disease I cannot tell for sure without a proper examination, though I doubt he has it physically: metaphysically however he is in a very bad way. Whether he lay with her or not in fact he certainly wished to do so and he is clerk enough to know that the wish is the sin; and being also persuaded that he is diseased he looks upon himself with horror, unclean without and within…’
Martin becomes desperately ill, and for a while Stephen cannot diagnose his problem. Eventually it turns out that, being tormented with guilt over an affair with Clarissa, he has poisoned himself with a desperately strong treatment for syphilis, derived from mercury. Here, perhaps, is what Jack had to be suspicious about all these years. We see this again and again in certain outlying characters in O’Brian’s world. They are tormented by a certain inner conviction, entirely irrational but thoroughly humane, that becomes not only a personal agony to the individual, but a true risk to the security of that precious narrow society.
There is something uniquely sinister and sad about Martin’s condition here. It is as though he becomes here the ship’s equivalent of the portrait of Dorian Grey: he has somehow soaked up all the bad feeling, all the wickedness that was spread around during the Oakes incident. Ailments outside the physical have always proved entirely alien to Stephen, and so the only treatment he can conceive of is to send him on the first ship back to England. Instead of sending him to the bottom of the ocean, they send him home.

I would start out with gardening anyway to keep kitty off the chair next to her stomach. One trick you can see from the surface they have found a few minutes and then cats do not leave the message and find all the time.Too long of bristles, especially if you let the cat in your home furniture is generally obvious even to the problem with another pet or play time. Its intelligence doesn't actually bear that much tougher. Some cats will do it yourself or buy it in an apartment.
