প্রত্যেক বছরের মতো এবারও আমি মহালয়ার আগের রাতে চলে এসেছি আমার দাদুর বাড়ি। তিন মিনিট এর হাঁটা পথ। রাত এগারোটা বাজে...চুপচাপ রাস্তা। দুটো বেড়াল ঝগড়া করছে, পাড়ার আলোর শেষ কিছু কনেকশন ঠিক করছে কজন আর হল এ রিহার্সাল এর চাপা শব্দ। নিস্তব্ধতা-টা একটু অদ্ভুত। হাওয়ায় হাওয়ায় একটা নির্ভেজাল উত্তেজনা। রাত পোহালেই ভেসে আসবে সেই একটা খুব চেনা গলা। ছোটবেলার অনেক কিছুই সময়ের সাথে হারিয়ে গেছে...হারায়নি শুধু এই গলাটা আর মা এর ফিরে আসার প্রতিশ্রুতি। হয়তো এই দিনটা পালন করা শুরু হয় অন্য এক কারণে...কিন্তু আমাদের কাছে মহালয়া হলো মা এর বাড়ি ফিরে দরজায় প্রথম বেল। আবার উমা ঘরে ফিরেছে। শহর টা পুজোর সাজে সেজে উঠেছে।

Posting this early Monday but the first day of Navratri was yesterday (Oct 15, 2023).

My close friends know this but I’ve been reconnecting with my spiritual roots on my own terms. I have been using it with conjunction to my upbringing in the states as well as my own therapy practice.

It has been grounding and centering for me, in a time when many things in my life (external and internal) have not been grounded.

Sometimes I will even flip to a random page in my personal copy of the Bhagavad Gita - it always tells me what I need to hear. And what I should focus on.

Navratri is the celebration of the nine aspects of Durga Maa - an anthropomorphized depiction of a concept called shakti (power). She has many tales of her triumph over evil. She is an allegory, a bringer of good fortune, and a warning.

The first day is dedicated to Maa Shailputri.

Many practices have strict guidance and rituals of how to worship during this time. And Bengali Hindus will have their own Durga Puja (prayer) during Navratri as a separate thing.

Not to mention that worshippers of Kali do it differently.

I had very limited spoons this weekend.

In my view (and this is not uncommon), Hinduism is spiritual and monotheistic.

It is recognizing that there is something that is higher and more powerful than us… and that we are inevitably a part of it.

It is helping me love myself more. And by extension, love the short life I have on this Earth more.

Today, I prayed for peace in these turbulent times. So much harmony for those I love.

And the motivation and the STRENGTH AND POWER to pursue my dreams. All of them. Even the silly ones.

I want to embrace myself more than ever, even when I am struggling.

At the end of my prayer (a mishmosh of heartfelt Bangla and English declarations to the 10 second depiction of the goddess I drew)… I asked: this Navratri, what should I focus on?

The answer I got:

The hope of abundance

Good health

Blossoming however that looks like

Friendship

Sharing and creating, where the power lies within me. Sharing my unique vision whatever that might be.

Harmony
