something I would like to see in a Dune adaptation is more of the people on Caladan and Giedi Prime who are not part of House Atreides or Harkonnen, just the regular folks that support them.

there are a couple of scenes in the book but mostly the story is focused on the aristocrats and their households and we never see how they maintain their grip on power or how they establish the legitimacy of their rule.

as well as showing how most of the people in this universe actually live it would also offer some context for Duke Leto's comments about how on Caladan they relied on sea and air power (to defend against Harkonnen attacks, or to crush rebel uprisings and native independence movements?) while on Arrakis they would need desert power: an alliance with the Fremen compelling enough that they would willingly be the duke's private army, something that happened in the end anyway thanks to Paul's establishment as the Fremen messiah of legend.

we see that the Harkonnens rule by fear and greed, suppressing dissent with brutality and bribery, while the Atreides take a lighter touch and can be smaller and more efficient as a result, relying on inspiring leadership (and a healthy volume of fascist propaganda to ensure that everybody knows about it).

the Atreides also benefit from the role the Harkonnens play as their adversaries, noting that many of their followers are bound to them by hatred of a common enemy, but ideally an adaptation of the story would deftly sketch out some of the ambiguity and hypocrisy and self-interest in the Atreides version of events, the sacrifices they demand of others to maintain their own power and the mafia-like protection racket that any aristocracy ultimately relies on.

you can appreciate the tradition and the pageantry but it needs to be disturbing, these are two sides of the same brutally exploitative system and the fact that one side is more appealing than the other or even inspiring should make you very uneasy.

I adore your Paul fics!! I've been having the hardest time finding fics in general that aren't NSFW (nothing against them/people who write them but sometimes I just don't want to see it) and it's so nice to like - yeah, Dune is a stressful as heck kind of a world, but to imagine Paul having some regular-person stress as opposed to "am I gonna get murdered" stress. LOVE<3 (And mad impressed that you do all this while being in college. Kudos to you<3333)

I totally understand why NSFW content is so popular, I enjoy it too sometimes and there are really great writers, but most of the time I'm also looking for different things, there are not enough soft!Paul fics on here. You can't imagine how hard I laughed at "am i gonna get murdered"-stress 😂 But it's true, the poor boy really can't catch a break or get some normal problems that people his age usually have, all he gets is just trauma. I really would have loved to see more of his daily life on Caladan and non-life-threatening struggles, but it’s also fun to write my own interpretation of it.
