Alt.Xmas Centennial
11/26/24 A hundred years ago today, the Red Onion Jazz Babies, with Louis Armstrong’s cornet out in front, recorded a Tin Pan Alley tune by Charley Straight called “Santa Claus Blues.” There’s no vocal, no kiddie choirs or Jingle Bells vamps. Complex polyphony and the nascent recording quality make it a reach for most 21st century ears. But radio and the gramophone were the hot new toys, and this was the sound trendsetting flappers loved in the 1920s. There had been earlier recordings of Night Before Christmas, carols, and snowy quartets, but here’s where Alt.Xmas begins.
Tagging Santa in a Dixieland side didn’t launch a stampede of Christmas records, but it was the first pop-music cue that there might be other ways of seeing Christmas.
youtube
The session was produced by Clarence Williams, who recorded the song again—once slow, once fast—the following year, with his wife Eva Taylor singing Gus Kahn’s lyrics.
Over the next few years, blues musicians went on to make a few Christmas records, but a decade passed before white bands co-opted pop Christmas into a seasonal juggernaut.
For a 21st-century take on the song, here’s Maria “Midnight at the Oasis” Muldaur with Duke Robillard.
