woke up, found mouse shit on the counter (again) and finally had my 'I can't keep living like this' moment.
850$ a month for a tiny room with no closet, single pane windows, no heating, so many mice, no washer or dryer, a kitchen held together with duct tape, a stove so broken it's functionally a hotplate, 7 (!) house-mates, no smoke detectors, and a mystery white powder the landlady spreads around to deal with the mice (doesn't work, but is definitely getting into my lungs and my food.)
It's only a 110$ more for campus housing, if i can get it. I can't afford it, so I also caved and applied for a student loan.
