As it is right now, machine learning image generation is classist. It depends strongly on the human audience's eye for pareidolia to smooth over its inconsistencies and find patterns in its noise where its procedural generation falls short.
This means that the less opportunity a person has to gain context for information, the more likely 'AI art' is to be convincing. As long as that person has been given a baseline to 'believe' the general arrangement of elements, AI art will 'make sense' even if that baseline is just exposure to more acontextual imagery. Which is what the machine learning's algorithms were trained on in the first place.
For example, 'AI' right now struggles to coherently depict plants. When it's not blurry, indistinct plant fur, leaves from different kinds of plants appear on the same stem, plants from the wrong biome are included in 'nature' images. Someone who has very little educational opportunity, but has seen movies where people walk through jungles or forests as set pieces or something, might not notice the difference. And why do you 'need' to know if the plants look right, poor person; you'll never leave your immediate area or take a biology class!
Someone without the opportunity or comfort to travel might not recognize that a cityscape has been artificially generated, depicts no actual real-world city. Is that supposed picture of Dubai or New York City or Cairo showing a real place that exists? Who cares, you're too poor to ever go there.
Searching for information about animal species, even, can get messed up by generated 'content.' Do servals have ear tufts? What kind of insect is that? What species of lizard or snake am I looking at? You don't deserve to know what kinds of animals are real. What time do you have to go to a zoo, if there's even one around you?
The less money you have, the more likely you are to be surrounded by advertising and "AI Art" is ideal for advertising because it only tells a very simple story at best. There's no complicated human emotions; its literally made of averages of what has been seen before. Marketing and advertising content often replaces actual art that might be a window into a greater world. It may even just be dropped in there to fill the awkward silence or blankness that would have otherwise surrounded marketing efforts-- commercials would be surreal without some say-nothing 'music' track behind them, and billboards would be creepy without the graphic noise that surrounds the product and its information. Someone who passes through more monetized public spaces per day will see more of it than someone who inhabits private property.
And like, at the end of the day if you are wealthy... you probably don't care about any of this. You have access to whatever you want, so why do you care what's real? You trust you can 'pay for' the real thing, right?
Plus, who knows the economic status of who generated imagery the machine learning algorithms train on? It's all stolen.
Photography has been critical in modern history for bringing 'the world' across social divisions of class, race, geographical divides. Photographers and filmmakers, along with other visual artists as well as musicians, writers, and journalists associated with all of these disciplines give us lenses, framing, voices, and perspectives to understand our greater world no matter where we are. Hell, identifying the human intentions BEHIND those lenses, framings, voices is key to our development. No matter your circumstances, with a strong grasp of media literacy anyone can sit down and say, wait a minute, is this real, would it be true for me too? Or is this someone's point of view?
To the point of view of wealth and capital, the working class and those without wealth who cannot work (disabled people, displaced people, homeless people shut out of employment, and more) do not deserve to know about reality. To that point of view, nonwealthy people don't deserve to even know who created the perspectives they're allowed to see. You can be born, get trained to work, go to work, come home to the minimum, repeat, and die having seen no images of reality for all they care. They'd like that! How can you dream of something outside the current exploitative structure if you can't even trust you know what plants and animals and cities look like, outside your tiny box?

L3Harris will modernize the electronic warfare system of the U.S. Navy F/A-18
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/03/2023 - 16:00 in Military
L3Harris Technologies won a contract with the U.S. Navy to continue developing advanced systems to modernize electronic warfare (EW) capabilities in F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft, improving pilot protection against emerging and future threats.
L3Harris will develop a next-generation EW system under the $80 million contract for the U.S. Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fleet. It is one of the two companies selected for the initial contract of the prototype. The final decision for subsequent development and production contracts is scheduled for 2026.
“L3Harris is developing the advanced EW system to boost the success of the mission and ensure that naval aviators are protected in the coming years,” said Ed Zoiss, President, Space and Airborne Systems, L3Harris. "This award is based on decades of providing EW systems to the Navy, and we are excited that our technology is protecting pilots in dangerous situations while allowing them to dominate potential opponents."
The advanced L3Harris system will feature an integrated electronic support measure and an electronic attack system, providing immediate threat detection in all relevant radio frequency bands. With a modular open systems approach and a design compatible with open mission systems, this innovation allows crews to easily insert new and updated technology, saving time and reducing costs.
L3Harris has been providing innovative EW capabilities for F/A-18 for more than two decades. The company has also been providing these resources for more than 60 years to the U.S. Air Force and other allied air services around the world.

Extremist or mainstream: how do Tim Walz’s policies match up globally?
Ed PilkingtonFri 16 Aug 2024 12.00 CEST
Within hours of Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, being chosen by Kamala Harris to be her Democratic presidential running mate, Donald Trump and team began attacking him as a “dangerously liberal extremist”.
Trump surrogates seized on Walz’s record of expanding voting rights for former felons, combatting the climate crisis, and other measures as proof that Harris-Walz would be the “most radical ticket in American history”.
If you step back from the melee, and look at his gubernatorial acts through a global lens, they appear anything but extreme. From the perspective of other industrialised nations, what Trump denounces as leftwing radicalism looks little more than basic public welfare provisions.
Far from being militant and revolutionary, initiatives such as paid family leave, free college tuition and rudimentary gun controls – all championed by Walz in Minnesota – have long been regarded as middle-of-the-road and unremarkable in large swathes of the world. Through this frame, it is not Walz who is the outlier, but his Republican critics.
Here are how some of Walz’s most impactful reforms compare with the rest of the world.
Free school lunches
View image in fullscreenTim Walz gets a huge hug from students at Webster Elementary in Minneapolis after he signed into law a bill that guarantees free school meals on 17 March 2023. Photograph: Star Tribune/Getty Images
‘On fire with excitement’: Tim Walz’s former students react to nominationRead more
Walz’s record: “What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn.” That was Walz’s sardonic reply to CNN when he was asked about having introduced free breakfast and lunch for all Minnesota schoolkids. The 2023 measure puts Minnesota among just eight US states that offer school meals at no cost to all children, no matter their family’s income.
Around the world: Several countries provide free lunches for their children nationwide. Sweden, Finland and the three Baltic nations all provide meals at no cost for all schoolchildren irrespective of income, and many more European countries provide targeted or subsidised meals. Even a developing country such as India ensures access to lunch for more than 100 million kids daily.
“The idea of offering free meals to all students during the school day is hardly new – many countries already do so,” said Alexis Bylander at the Food Research and Action Center, a US anti-hunger organisation. “Numerous studies show the benefits, including improving student attendance, behaviour and academic success.”
Combatting the climate crisis
View image in fullscreenPublic works employees run a water pump to prevent flood waters from coming up through the storm drains in Stillwater, Minnesota, in 2023. Photograph: Nicole Neri for The Washington Post via Getty Images
Walz’s record: In February 2023 Walz signed legislation committing Minnesota to having all its electricity produced by wind, solar and other clean energy sources by 2040 – an even more ambitious timeframe than adopted by California, America’s sustainable energy leader. The legislature also passed more than 40 climate initiatives, including expanding charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and introducing a new code for commercial buildings to cut energy use by 80% by 2036.
Around the world: By global standards, Minnesota’s ambitions do not stand out. Some 27 countries have written into law target dates by which they will become net zero – that is, stop loading additional greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In the developed world, Finland is leading the way, pledging to be net zero by 2035, and to begin absorbing more carbon dioxide than it produces by 2040. In December, almost 200 countries at the Cop28 climate summit in Dubai agreed to call on all countries to transition away from fossil fuels and for global renewable energy to be tripled by 2030.
Child tax credit
View image in fullscreenTim Walz reads a story to a group of kindergarteners in St Paul on 17 January 2023. Photograph: Glen Stubbe/Star Tribune via Getty Images
Walz’s record: Last year the governor signed into law a child tax credit program for low-income Minnesota families. The measure sought to fill the hole left by a federal scheme that expired in 2021 after Congress failed to extend it. The Minnesota plan is the most generous of its type in the US, offering $1,750 per child and reaching more than 400,000 children.
Around the world: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the forum of high-income democracies, reported in 2018 that 34 of the 35 countries with available information provided their people with some form of family benefit including tax credits. The OECD compared the value of family benefits for two-child families, measured as a percentage of average earnings, across 41 countries and found that the US came in at No 40, with only Turkey being less generous in its support.
Basic gun controls
View image in fullscreenTim Walz hands out pumpkin bars to a gun safety advocate before the first day of the legislative session in St Paul in 2023. Photograph: Abbie Parr/AP
Walz’s record: The governor identifies as a proud gun-owner and hunter, and he accepted Harris’s invitation to be her running mate wearing a camo hat. That didn’t stop him in May 2023 enacting a slew of gun safety measures, including requiring all private sales of handguns and semi-automatic rifles to go through an FBI background check that looks for evidence of criminal or mental health risks. The changes also introduced a “red flag law” that allows relatives and other interested parties to intervene when someone is in danger of injuring themselves or others with guns.
Around the world: International comparisons show that Americans own vastly more guns than civilians in other rich countries – 121 guns per 100 Americans, compared with five guns per 100 people in the United Kingdom. The number of gun killings per 100,000 people is also vastly higher: 4.12 in the US, 0.04 in the UK.
Other countries also have much tougher gun controls that make those introduced by Walz look weak by comparison. Canada requires gun buyers to wait 28 days before acquiring a firearm, and imposes mandatory safety training and a ban on military-style rifles that does not exist in the US. The UK also bans some semi-automatic rifles and most handguns. Japan tightly restricts gun ownership, banning most guns other than air guns and a few other special categories and even then requiring owners to submit to annual inspections.
Paid family and medical leave
Walz’s record: House File 2, enacted by the governor last year, gave Minnesotans access to up to 20 weeks in every year of partial wages to cover medical leave after a life-changing diagnosis, mental health leave, or time off to care for a new baby. “Paid family and medical leave is about investing in the people that made our state and economy strong in the first place,” Walz said as he signed the bill.
Around the world: The US is the only OECD member country without a national law giving all workers access to paid leave for new mothers. Thirty-seven out 38 OECD countries offer national paid maternity leave – the only exception being the US. France, which holds the top spot, allows mothers and fathers to take paid leave until their child is three years old.
The US is also one of only six countries with no form of national paid leave covering either family or medical leave in the case of a health concern.
Voting rights for former felons
Walz’s record: The governor signed a bill that restores the vote to more than 50,000 Minnesotans who have been convicted of a felony. The Trump campaign denounced the measure as evidence of Walz’s “dangerously liberal agenda”, which is ironic, given that Trump himself, as a convicted felon, will only be able to vote for himself in November thanks to a similar reform in New York.
Around the world: A report released by Human Rights Watch (HRW) in June concluded that the US was an “outlier nation in that it strips voting rights from millions of citizens solely on the basis of a criminal conviction”. In 2022, more than 4 million people in the US were disenfranchised on those grounds. By contrast, when HRW surveyed 136 countries around the world, it found that the majority never or rarely deny the vote because of a criminal record, while those with restrictions tend to be much less draconian in their approach than US states.

Interview with the vampire Season S2E5 Liveblog
"Don't be afraid just start the tape"
Don't be afraid just start the tape -okay but what if I'm afraid
The San Francisco and Dubai red opening! We in for it!
Not Assad rocking his fresh roller set.
Oh my God I said it in my last review@ that Louis starts talking all dreamily and I felt like it was the pull of the Sun!! and Armand just said something in a similar vein
Fuck boy for Lunch!
There you have it! merciful death! Someone half in love with death begging for it within an hour there is Armand
That's some longer in shots on Daniel's notes but why can't I still read them what the hell!
"Did we 😗😏*smooth jazz*" i need that to become a thing (If you watch captions that makes more sense lol)
so you climb in it close the lid and bang. a nod to Loustats first love scene post louis turning.
something something about louis (a black man) calling Daniel (a white man) boy
God Louis loo.ks so good in the 70s but damn he looks good in every decade really
Louis shows him vamp powers and Daniel says "Are you the zodiac killer" Lmao Sir what? 😂
(sidebar sidebar I Love how I'm getting a commercial for Interview with the Vampire while I'm watching Interview with the Vampire-like you got me. I was even contemplating buying It on Amazon for the uncensored version. You got me AMC)
"Do you want to now?!"Not Daniel GULPing. I volunteer as tribute!
I love the nod to the film with the start of the interview
Daniel's giving DreamStat vibes right now. Going along parroting Louis' complaints about Lestat and adding on lol. So the photograph scene last ep
"Will you do the thing again?" I agree to Daniel that was hot
There we go-the trigger that set Louis off was and is Daniels dismissive attitude to his trauma and in particular about Claudia.
"I took a scoop out of your throat" HA! Like ices cream?
Louis said he thinks he can't remember the rest of the interview because he was so high from Daniels blood. Interesting that tainted blood could effect them(possibly) so much
"You're a liar Daniel." "So are you Louis" Daniels is like Blah blah blah blah let's get past it. We gotta figure some shit out lol
Crackhead Louis is soooo convincing lol
OMG this fight is worse than the Lestat one. Emotional punch after emotional punch ugh my poor fledgling Loumand shipper heart.
CHOP MY HANDS OFF! MY DADDY VAMPIRE GROOMED ME INTO A LITTLE BITCH! MY BOTHER MY SISTER POOR ME!
Holy shit Louis walked out into the sun because he realized Claudia hated him. I absolutely did not expect this in THIS episode .They are in Merrick territory already! But I like this change.
Didn't love the cgi ash but the after burn effects are amazing KNB back at it again
This interrogation of 70s Daniel THIS IS TOO MUCH THiS IS TOO MUCH Armand got me quaking in my boots right now
Daniel cries out he didn't even want me in the end. ugh its not about Claudia for Louis and Lestat. Its not about Daniel with Louis and Armand. Just pawns and scapegoats
Louis and Daniel-The buddy duo. I did not know I was looking for.
Armand not telling Louis that Lestat is saying he loves him! I had to take a lap around the room. My Loustat heart. That would have absolutely made the difference in Louis going back to Lestat in the 70s.
Not both their feet in the rocks!LOL
"Met moi dan mon cercuiel"armand armand The paralells!
Not Armand convincing me to REST too. Assad killed this scene and this whole season honestly.
Louis saved Daniel by pulling rank. Daniel lowkey getting choked up about Louis words of encouragement after ugh they need to stay best friends.
Armand at the end with his comic book villian looking ah fit
Great episode no notes. Maybe my new favorite of the season.

Instagram And Art
Instagram has more than 500 million daily users, and its focus on images has made it especially popular among those who make and appreciate art. We are all just singular humans rooted in space and time, but Instagram gives us access to creative production all around the world, whenever we want it. Hooray! But what is it doing to us? Is it changing the way we interact with and experience art?
The benefits of using Instagram became clear pretty soon after it launched in 2010, for institutions and individuals alike. For photographers and designers and artists of all kinds, Instagram is your own free gallery. Well, if you don't count the cost of giving away your data and attention to advertisements, but it does give power to artists who represent themselves outside of traditional systems. You don't have to wait to be taken on by a gallery or make the kind of work a gallery thinks they can sell. You hold the reigns and can show your art how you'd like it to be seen. You can share aspects of your process and demonstrate that you are a person outside of your work...
Art history has tended to provide us only a handful of iconic images of artists seriously engaged in their work or posed with a painting conveniently in the background, but Instagram gives us views into the daily lives of a multitude of artists, making visible the diversity of the individuals producing art today and allowing each the ability to represent themselves, and Instagram is an outstanding networking tool, allowing you to not only build and cultivate community among other artists, but also speak directly to followers, fans, and potential collectors.
When most commercial galleries take 50% of a sale, the ability to connect to potential buyers without a middle person can be a real boon. As galleries are painfully aware, rent is high and employing people is expensive. While showing your work in person may be the ideal scenario, it's not always feasible, especially if you live in a place that isn't a cultural mecca, which is most places.
Does Instagram favor particular kinds of work? Heck yes. Square! Bright! Easily legible! Immersive! Some artworks come across better in photos than others, but most can figure out a way around these problems if they want to, and plenty of artists have used the platform as a strategic aspect of their work, recruiting participants and fundraising for performances and events, and sharing documentation with those who can't be there in person.
Some have used the images they find on Instagram to make actual works in real life. Ai Wei Wei has consistently shown us the power of social media to bear witness to his own experience of censorship and to injustice and suffering around the world, all of which are integral to the work he presents in museums and galleries, but Instagram can be a limiting influence for artists just as it's an empowering one. Like the rest of us, artists are susceptible to the dopamine rush that comes from likes and instant feedback. Artist Andrea Crespo admitted in a 2018 Vulture article, "Reward systems in social media were influencing my decisions while art making. I would think about what people would think based off of likes and comments."
Artists have long sat out insight and criticism from friends and colleagues, but more often than not, the feedback offered on Instagram is superficial or purely congratulatory or when offered by anonymous strangers, unconstructively cruel. Exposing your work on Instagram can also make it vulnerable to copycats, other artists as well as companies just trying to decorate their stores. An artist doesn't have to have their own account for this to happen either. Anyone can snap a pic of your work and post it with your name associated, making you present on Instagram even if you don't want to be, and what about Instagram's effects on museums and galleries?
Most not-for-profit institutions have missions that involve sharing their collections with the public, and their publics used to have pretty finite geographical boundaries...
Today, their conception of public can be much more expansive and inclusive. They can now try to create meaningful experiences with art for anyone with an internet connection and Instagram plays a big role in these efforts.
Museums have the problem of only being in one place. You've got to take the bus or drive and pay for parking and do all the walking. Social media platforms give museums a way of reaching people where they are, sharing works from their collection, promoting special exhibitions, and luring people out of their hidey holes with glimpses of the cool things they can be doing out in the world, and the magical part is that it doesn't have to be one way communication anymore. For so long, museums were the authority, imparting knowledge upon the huddled masses, but with social media, the huddled masses can easily impart their knowledge on the authority, explaining what they value about their experiences and what they don't.
If art museums are trying to show us the best of what's around, the peak moments in human creativity, do we want them heavily weighing Instagrammability when deciding what shows to devote money and scholarship to?
The answer doesn't have to be yes or no, and museums often navigate this by creating Insta-worthy moments within exhibitions, even if the art itself isn't so Insta-friendly...
For some, it might just be, art is cool. Me is cool, too, but I think there is more to it, or at least there can be. The research on this is just beginning, but a study of one exhibition in 2014 suggested that visitors use Instagram in meaningful ways to promote the exhibition, not replacing the in-person experience, but encouraging others to see it for themselves. The study found that visitors' use of Instagram was actually connected to their aesthetic experience. They captured mostly close-up images of the objects in the show and focused on their details. Only 9% of the images in the dataset included people.
Now, this was just one single exhibition in Sydney, Australia about the history of shoe design from the 1500s to the present. It was not a Kusama infinity room, where almost any photo is a selfie, but it's still showing, at least in one case, what I'd call real engagement with the objects. What we're really getting to here is how we construct meaning around art, right? Like, the old way was to just look at the thing, walk around it, observe it, and maybe read about it and talk about it with others.
Perhaps the camera and Instagram are tools we now use in this construction of meaning, revealing details we might not have noticed through our eyes alone, selecting and framing alternative views of the art. Does this add to the way we understand art or does it replace the traditional methods of direct observation and reflection? If, on average, we only look at a work of art for seven seconds, does our photographing it extend our engagement or does it take the place of what might have been a more fulfilling experience? Is one way better than the other or in the wise words of the internet's favorite young lass, "Why don't we have both?"
...One study published in 2017 found that taking photos with the intention to share them on social media actually undermines your enjoyment of the thing you're experiencing, increasing your feelings of anxiety. By worrying about presenting yourself in a positive light, you've lessened your engagement with the experience.
One of the co-authors of the study Alixandra Barasch, suggests you might take the pictures but wait until after the experience to share them, or you might even just take pictures for your own memories, which I think we can all agree is weird. I mean, who does that? But it's complicated. I really enjoy virtually visiting artworks and shows I can't get to by following artists and museums and galleries and curators on Instagram, and by exploring hashtags and geotags, I can find out about the ways other people experience the art I can get to. Like when I visited Prada Marfa in the middle of nowhere, Texas, I spent mediated as well as unmediated time at the site, but later, I found it really enriching to discover who else had been there, famous and not famous, years ago or just an hour before or after I did. This expanded my experience of it, extending the work beyond just an interaction between me and the art.
...Now, of course seeing an image of an artwork on a phone is not as good as being there, but social media gives us access to art and ideas that were previously off-limits for many of us due to geography or privilege and sharing art on Instagram is clearly something people want to be doing, at least right now. Museums would be foolish to ignore or resist our strong impulse to capture and share our experiences, but hopefully, we'll all evolve better, healthier ways of doing so, ways that deepen our engagement instead of making it more superficial.
Instagram can't last forever. No platform does. Maybe one day, we'll just get tired of filtering our lives through screens and museums will still be there for us. Not as stage sets for our individual dramas, but as destinations in themselves, whole places filled with voices and visions, past and present, where we can come together and interact in real time and real space, or maybe we'll come to some sort of equilibrium between those poles. Until then, I'll see you on Instagram.

Sweden orders AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles for Gripen fighters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/03/2023 - 11:00am in Military
The Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV) has signed a contract with the United States for the acquisition of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, scheduled for deployment with the Gripen fighters of the Swedish Air Force.
FMV's decision to acquire these advanced AMRAAM missiles represents an upgrade, replacing older variants of armament. It is noteworthy that Sweden had previously chosen to sell AMRAAM missiles to the United States, with the intention of forwarding them to Ukraine to strengthen the air defense capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Although FMV did not disclose the exact number of AMRAAM missiles ordered, an important development in July this year saw the United States Department of State grant approval for the sale of up to 250 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, along with the accompanying equipment, to Sweden. The estimated cost of acquisition, as stated by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), is approximately 605 million dollars.
FMV emphasizes that the acquisition of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles will not only strengthen the combat capabilities of the Swedish Air Force, but will also promote greater interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces.
